A rather frightening individual to say the least.
Were is Dr. Parsons when we need her? A real touchy lady, one day is ok, the other...you don't want to know.
Now that Parsons is gone will she be #1 in the department? The fall semester will be interesting around here (for once!).
Very helpful if you try.
Very hard to follow in class. I don't know what is going on half the time. Tests are difficult to understand essays. Avoid taking her for classes.
Some students find her very hard to follow.
She has her bad and bad days...lucky us.
BORING...i have not once understood anything she was saying or anything...you cant follow her at all, IT SUCKS!!! but it is super easy to get an A or B in there, JUST GO TO CLASS
Un-organized and hazy on some concepts that were asked about last semester.
Poor manager of time, but is somewhat helpful during office hours and is fairly flexible.
Cant believe that she expects us to read before the lecture. The exams are out of book so she forces you to use it that way too. I like the subject, but she makes it to hard.
Dr.Lenzi is extreemly intelligent in the field. She always means well...but, if you aren't fluent in latin, greek, english, and fourteen other languages..it maybe hard to follow her in lecture....isn't that the fun of it though?
Very helpful, incredibly intelligent. Always willing to give you extra help if you ask. God forbid, you have to be interactive in a class?
Very well intentioned. Lectures are long and informative, but it necessary to pay attention to get what she is teaching you. Some classes you can coast by in, this isn't one of those. Class can be interesting if you interact and be part of the class.
The main complaint with Lenzi is the difficulty students have following along. But how many students try?--in my experience, few. She is super smart and willing to help anyone in anyway she can.
Professor Lenzi is one of the finest professors I've ever had at UW-Platteville. I am an engineering student and i was searching my entire college career for this wonderful course.
I had Lenzi a couple years ago and I remember that she was worthless, at least for my intro class. Her incomprehensible babblings were equally unhelpful and somewhat creepy. Since that time, I've taken two 300 level philo courses, but thanks to Lenzi, I had to teach myself intro stuff.
she just rambles on during class. you don't know if you should be writing down the notes she has because they are just ramblings. voice blended in with the room.
Boring and forgetful. She knows the topic she is teaching but is completely boring. I didn't understand her the whole time I was in class. It's better just to learn outside of class through reading and researching. Easy grader, and open minded
She is nice, but a terrible teacher. You will learn nothing and than be tested on random facts out of a 600 page book. most boring class ever, just rambles about nothing. STAY AWAY
This professor is terrible. She didnt give any relevant info to the class. You have pretty much no homework but when it is assigned you have no idea whats being asked of you.
I sometimes wondered if the human brain disintegrates over time. after taking this class, i have seen the proof. easy class, never once read the book and got an A. she rambled like an incoherent baboon and i believe she was raised by the campus squirrels. take this class only if you want to waste your money. going completely blazed always helped me
I don't know how I ever stood 3 hours of lectures. BORING. No, Boring doesn't even begin to describe the class. Unable to read a basic calendar. Assigned a seating chart with 2 weeks left in the class. Mumbles. Asks a question, rambles on with her own answer for 10 minutes, then expects you to remember what she was saying. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
By no means is she bad, but she isn't spectacular. She rambles the whole class period so I got some good naps in, but she is an easy grader; I'm sitting at a high B to A range currently. Long and easy essay tests, basically just stated my opinion. She mumbles and interrupts you a lot, though.
Great professor and great class. Lectures and discussions were always interesting. Many students seemed confused, however those students rarely attended class. If you show up and pay attention, you will learn a lot.
Great professor, requires you to know the material she assigns when you go into class. As long as you look over the text everything she says makes perfect sense, easy grader, incredibly nice. Don't take the class if you are not motivated to put in any effort reading the assigned chapters, otherwise a brilliant professor.
Had her for intro to philosophy and origins of western philosophy. At the same time. She is very nice, but not very clear when assigning homework. Sitting through class, i didnt learn anything besides what i read from the book. The lectures are basically pointless, i should have skipped way more than i did because i still got a A-.
Incredible Professor.
Dr. Lenzi is my favorite professor on campus and I enjoyed being in class. I enjoyed her class because I read regularly and enjoy learning in all areas. The bad reviews on here are from the students who who sit on their phones in class andor never readskip. She is more than fair and willing to work with you at any time. Great person to talk to.
I cannot begin to explain how awful Lenzi is and would advise anyone to steer clear of her. She mumbles through her painfully long lectures, not explaining the hard material and expecting you to answer her unintelligible questions, but spends multiple class periods going through the easy material. She's late to class daily and is unorganized.
After a semester with Mary I still don't know what to say. This lady is one of a kind and loves philosophy. She seems lost and confused most days. She's very unorganized. If you are good a making things up you'll be okay. I don't think its possible to fail. She's very unclear and her lectures make little sense but you might get a good laugh.
You can tell that she loves what she teaches, but lectures are boring and confusing. She never uses power point or any way for the class to take notes. Have to read the textbook (not a bad thing) but she is never clear on what to read. Shes nice but I would not take again
The lectures are really boring and usually really confusing and hard to follow but overall the class is really easy. As long as you are half paying attention during lecture you will be able to pass this class easily.
As a philosophy major, I would recommend taking another professor if you are just taking a philosophy course for a GenEd because she will make you hate philosophy. She is very unclear about what is due, when its due, what criteria the assignment should follow, etc. Lectures are long and boring and you'll never understand what she's saying.
I had her for business ethics and philosphy of gender and sexuality. She's very smart, but lectures are very boring and it's hard to pay attention. But if you act like you know what you're talking about and show you're trying, you'll get an A. She's nice and if you show you care she'll like you.
Having taken many courses in Humanities, she's one of the best when it comes to knowing her stuff and thinking on her feet. Lenzi loves to be challenged, and tries to make answering the big questions apply to everyday life. Class deals with controversial issues and makes you think harder about them but avoid arguments.
As an undergrad I had Lenzi for philosophy class and took her online Business Ethics post-grad toward a Masters. Her online course is challenging, but she provides detailed notes, questions, glossary, and commentaries for each Lesson. Lenzi quickly responds to your emails (daily online), and gives grading feedback every week.
She lectures for the entire class and yells at you if you ask her a question on the reading because you are supposed to do it even if you don't understand, how can you pass if you don't understand cause she can't teach. Finds the longest way to an answer then still doesn't give you a striaght answer
She is all over the place with her lectures. Very hard to understand what she is trying to say and even harder to stay awake. Goes of on tangents CONSTANTLY. I have little to no idea what is going on in her class. Very unclear about assignments and what is expected. Would never take another class with her.
Lenzie is enthusiastic about whatever topic we did. If you don't like to think or read, this class is not one for you. many in the class seemed not ready and wanted power points,
Easily the least coherent professor I have ever had. I came in to the class very passionate about philosophy and with a solid grasp of Socrates, plato, arristotle, kant, Christianity, Judaism, and stoicism. All she ever did in lectures was confuse me. She is one of the worst professors in the university. DO NOT TAKE
learn from my mistakes and do not take a class with this professor. Her lectures do not make any sense at all, and she has no grading criteria for anything. At all costs, don't do it.
I took Professor Lenzi for Intro to Philosophy and I've never been more lost in my life. She has a terrible time with staying on topic and tends to be all over the place during her lectures. Her grading criteria is extremely hard to follow so expect C's for a lot of your essays. Bad experience overall, would never take her again as a professor.
Where do I begin? She clearly has a passion, which I respect. However, the layout of her class is unintuitive at best. Every person in the class, and I can say this without exaggeration, was lost. Her lectures were random rambling, she was unhelpful with any attempt at learning, and doesn't give any structure to the course. Don't take her classes.
If you think certain countries don't know what they are doing well let's just say, Professor Lenzi's lectures make said countries look like a brain surgeon. Her lectures are just random rambles that might relate to what you were supposed to read. If you want to pass one of her courses you need to read everything for your self. Or don't take her.
Unclear about expectations for assignments. Contradicts herself and does not know how to captivate or control a room. Nervous, cuts students off, and goes on long rants. Would not recommend
Motivational, supportive, and goes into ideas at levels most of us ever go
Lenzix wants us to question and see how many ways we can answer open-ended questions and claims people make
She knows about all sorts of things from history, politics, literature, psychology, that i didnt expect from a philosophy prof.
learned a lot about western civilization along with other religions, like Islam, but the readings were very difficult. Lenzi worked hard to get the points of the books across if you cared to pay attention. students tuned into cells when the going got tough some were working on other classes
I would encourage you not to take any of her classes. She doesn't answer any questions, and she changes the rubric for assignments after you turn it in. A classmate received a poor grade for "having too much information" in a paper, when the original rubric stated to provide lots of information. Overall the most difficult professor I've ever had.
Makes different associations to connect philosophy to real life that you need to pay attention but likes questions and anyone who participates or rewrited did better. She let me and the class rewrite take home essays to improve grades. All grading based on take-home short essay assignments. Yeh for no in class tests, the final open-books only
Lenzi really likes to share what she knows about different subjects and current issues. This prof wants to get us thinking about how to have a "good life," according to the great philosophers and from different cultures. The reading is hard but short selections.
She knows a lot of things about business and applying philosophy. We learned about all sorts of problems and topics that we usually don't think much about but they do seem useful to our majors.
HORRIBLE TEACHER. None of her lectures made any sense. Horrible grader as well. I studied with my partner for everything and she always gave me a lower grade even after I went into her office hours. You can't hear when she speaks and the only thing you can take notes off of is her cat scratches on the whiteboard that MAKE NO SENSE. Don't take her.
She is the worst professor Ive ever taken in my 3 years of college. She goes off on tangents, doesnt make sense, and its not clear what she actually grades on. Midterm and final are written essays plus a paper. If you ask her questions good luck getting an answer back that makes sense. Im normally an A student and I got a B-
works hard to bring up contemporary examples in Science, Tech, and discusses the current news. The Bicentennial Project on Frankenstein was a real plus to this philosophy course. she made several assignments based off that.
Lenzi wants class always to think more and more, and it's lunchtime for many of us. One guy brought his lunch to eat. She picks good topics to read and for lectures. The assignments and tests were all essays, and questions were original for a change of pace.
DO NOT TAKE MARY LENZI! Absolutely awful. Fails to actually teach you anything, but expects heavy participation. Mumbles and rambles. Very hard to follow. Horrible at explaining what's going on and what is expected. The only good thing about this class was that the tests were open note/book. If you don't show up, your grade WILL BE EFFECTED.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR! If she were my grandmother, she would be put straight in a home. You can't tell what she is saying and she talks the entire class. None of what she says ever makes sense. Asks herself questions and answers them herself. Talks to the ceiling and wall. Please don't waste your time.
*Warning* DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR, She usually walks in class 10 minutes late, and her lectures consist of her rambling on and on and going off on random tangents. She makes an intro philosophy class that's supposed to have interesting discussions into a very confusing mess. (gave her a 1 because a 0 is a professor that does absolutely nothing)
While Mary Lenzi is a wonderfully kind and intelligent person, this does not translate over to her professional career. Her lectures are unintelligible and consist of her going on four different tangents at once, rambling, and general confusion. Nothing is gained from the lectures, homework is arbitrarily assigned, and no-one is engaged-don't take.
Mary is really nice and really smart, however this class was a trainwreck. We never had any idea when homework was due, there was little communication about things, didn't use Canvas so we didn't know our grades until they were put into pass, and lectures made absolutely zero sense. I learned more from reading the textbook then I did from her.
She is a fine enough professor of philosophy. The only issue is with her long-winded lectures and it is extremely easy to zone out.
The most ambiguous Professor I have had the displeasure of taking. She will ramble on and no one has any clue what she is saying. If you are asking a question she will talk over your question and does not ever give a clear answer. This class should not be required because ethics is talked about in every other business class. Avoid if possible.
So boring. She is not very good at engaging the class. Everyone would sit there and doze off while she lectured for an hour and a half. Doesn't even use a power point. Oh, if you like taking notes on your laptop, she does not allow that.
Professor Lenzi is the most boring professor possible. Be ready to sit there and learn nothing the entire hour fifteen minute class due to her numerous random ramble sessions. Even when she teaches you wont learn a thing she never talks loud enough, handwriting is atrocious, lectures are all over the place. 100/10 never take her class.
Dr. Lenzi has the most soul-sucking lectures I've ever had to sit through. Additionally, she assigns almost no homework and your grade is mostly comprised of participation and attendance. Her lectures are aimless and she goes on many tangents and always fails to find a point. People rarely speak up so the class is 75 minutes of her rambling. Avoid.
She is, without exaggeration, the single worst educator I have had in my life. To the point that I suspect she has dementia/something similar. I have never met somebody so unorganized, incomprehensible, and "out-of-it" in my life. Her classes are nothing but 3 hours of rambling and tangents, and it is impossible to get a straight answer out of her.
Her class is extremely boring. She just talks the entire class and it is impossible to pay attention to. The few assignments that were given had unclear instructions.
Constant babbling about loosely related to the topic. Assignments don't have clear guidelines and are few and far between. I love philosophy and I love to think but this class is so uninteresting even to someone interested in the material.
Don't take her. Trust me. Shes boring and isn't clear with instructions. She rambles and has a monotone voice. She doesn't teach, she just reads from the book and makes you answer the questions in the end of the chapter.
Awful professor, do not take her.
This class was an absolute JOKE. Mary is truly nice person but is nowhere near fit to be a college professor. Lectures consisted of a 3-hour tangent about pointless topics. Truly did not learn anything of true value. She always came to class 10 minutes late, disorganized, talks to herself, doesn't answer questions, hard to reach out of class...etc.
Awful 3-hour lecture for a course she should not teach. I had 10 textbooks and only used about 3 or 4 of them for the mid-term. Mid-term was weighted more than final exam and she emphasised that we would not be able to know what it would be ahead of time. The final exam was a few questions that we were given ahead of time. Talked random things 24/7
She's by no means a bad person by you can never hear what she is saying, does not make expectations clear, is constantly changing the rules without telling anyone. Overall its an easy class but extremely extremely frustrating.
One of the worst college classes I have ever taken. Everything she says hardly even makes sense, and you can hardly even hear her anyway. Most of the class consists of talking to herself and rambling about incomprehensible topics. She will force you to speak in class giving you a discussion grade, so if you don't speak in class, you wont do well.
Beside her good intentions, she put together quite possibly the worst class I have ever taken in my life. This was an intro class and I could not tell you one thing I learned due to her random, dementia induced tangents on things that were not going to be covered in the class. You would learn more watching paint dry.
She was so hard to understand and talked on and on about god after repeating herself day in and day out. She would give the nastiest looks at all the people who were talking. She was late to class every single day.
Worst class I have ever been apart of. I truly believe she has dementia. I'm not sure if she knows where she is half of the time. 75 minute ramble about random topics. Stay far away from her classes. Waste of time.
This professor shouldn't be allowed to teach anymore. She assigns random homework and doesn't explain what it is or what she expects from you. She doesn't make rubrics and can't explain anything. Her lectures are a 75 minute yap session. People will get into arguments with over just trying to figure out what we are supposed to be doing.
The teacher is a really good person outside of teaching but is a really frustrating teacher. I would ask her a question she'd not answer it, go on a 10 minute rant, and ask if that solved your question. Then when you ask her about it later she'd say that you guys discussed it earlier. She is by far the most frustrating teacher that I've had
Most infuriating professor I have had in college this far. In the nicest way possible, her lectures are 75 minute rambles where she attempts to string together coherent sentences. If I was not limited to 350 characters there would be much more that I would say but I will leave it at this.
Unclear. She just talks about stuff with no clear goal in mind for the class to learn. Her lectures are aimless, but she will always use every single minute of the class to talk except when she asks questions just to answer them herself. She cares more that you read her book and listen to her than about learning philosophy or anything valuable.
Unclear instructions. The class had to figure out if and what the homework was. The least engaging and most painful lectures. I would describe her lectures as her talking to herself about god knows what. Graded us harshly when we didn't know what she wanted. I would recommend to wait a semester if she is the only professor available.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had. Dyslexic, has no idea what she is talking about, assigns horribly designed assignments and grades like we are speaking a foreign language. When you confront her about a mistake, she will gaslight you to make you think she is correct. Horrible teacher, avoid no matter what
In lectures, she makes zero sense and rambles on about random things that have no relation to the topic at hand. The instructions given for assignments are clear as mud. When she tries to explain them in person, the instructions actually make less sense than before. She makes everything more difficult than it needs to be. Do not take this class.
I don't think I've ever encountered a worse professor. Not only did she lack any understanding of how to teach, but her attitude towards students was appalling. Every lecture felt like a waste of time – her explanations were unclear, and she seemed to have little patience for anyone who didn't immediately understand her jumbled explanations.
Should not still be teaching. I didn't learn anything even though I was exited for philosophy.
Take this professor if you love wanting to tear your eye balls out every class period you have. She will randomly regrade assignments from the beginning of the semester. You also never get anything done in your online classes because she will rant about random garbage for forever. If you have questions she expects you to figure it out on your own.
She is very unclear about online assignments, always gets lost in lecture, expects a lot but gives very little. You must attend and participate to her ideal level to even receive attendance points. Don't take if possible
I thought Intro to Philosophy would be interesting, but it felt like a chore. The course is 75% Zoom, she has a tendency to ramble, and half the time you can get by without doing the required reading. I also wish her rubrics and assignment descriptions were clearer. 3/5
I had her last year and can't believe the hate found here about Lenzi. I Some kept asking her to explain what she put on Canvas weekly, and didn't read any of it. We like Zoom cause we can sit back, zone out, and do whatever on our screens while walking or in rooms. We only knew each other by email threads with students who had axes to grind.
Took her freshman year. Not a great professor by any standards but she didn't assign much homework. I didn't do much of the reading and got by with giving my opinion but this was 2 years ago and might have changed. Felt that her rate my professor score should be more accurate than it is currently.
