The transition to adulthood, as influenced by physiological change, intellectual growth, and social attitudes. Topics include the quest for identity, juvenile delinquency, drug use, the youth culture, relationships between generations, and vocational choice.
I hated her three years ago. After taking her again, I have realized what an intelligent person Dr. Lewis is. The only reason people may comment on how difficult or terrible she is is because they were not willing to test themselves and work their hardest.. Tough class;very interesting; talk to her if you are struggling. She has a good heart.
She is the psychology advisor at OU, and she did a good job teaching the class. READ THE BOOK and you will do just fine. Come to class every day because you will have iclicker quizes once or twice a week. Take her if you can, she is smart and helpful.
She is wonderful!!! Lots of reading, and she moves pretty quick. She is very intelligent, and knows lots about what shes teaching. Shes got a great sense of humor too!
She is very intelligent. Sometimes she expects a little tooo much from the class. Tests are reallyyy hard, its difficult to do well, make sure you study a lot. The writing assingments take forever to finish. The final paper is pretty tough too but she makes herself available for help if you need it. Shes a great person, very passionate about psych.
honestly the only thing you have to do to pass her class is read the text...she's interesting if you show up to class, but i stopped going cause her lectures aren't so involved with what you need for the tests...but i will warn you that she tests on like 13 or so modules at one time so if you're not up for that try another prof..READ YOUR TEXT!
I think she is great
Holier than though attitude. No help at all.Expects you to know everything in every chapter.100 level class tests resemble 300-400 level PSY classes.
Teaches 100 level class like a 300 level class.Only take her if you are majoring in PSY.Good luck if you are.
I loved her class so much! She was very funny, nice, and made learning enjoyable. Her tests were somewhat hard, but if you read the book and study hard you will pass.
GREAT GREAT TEACHER! I had to retake this class because the first time I didn't take advantage of office hours, but if you're having trouble DO THIS! She truly cares about helping you do better in every aspect of your academics. The best ever!
Dr. Lewis is an awesome professor! She's very enthusiastic about psych, and makes class as interesting as possible. She's also the Psychology Department head...If you go to class, read the book, and study you'll get an A. But this isn't a class you can blow off and expect to pass.
She is a tough professor and the head of the department so she isn't going to curve. I worked so hard in this class and because of the many chapters and sections, I struggled. If you take this class be good at memorizing. I wish you luck she will put things on the exams that you have barely gone over in class..so read ALOT!
I loved high school psychology going into this. However, what she teaches on her powerpoints do nothing for you on the tests. Read your book and memorize it. She often will talk too much about her personal life, resulting in her saying..."okay, so since I haven't covered it, read on your own, you have a test in two days." Yeah..awful
I really like Dr.Lewis. She is one of the few profs I've had at OU that use Moodle in a useful way. All our exams are posted on there promptly and the quiz's help prep for exams. We had a class of 250 and she would still go out of her way to help people. Definitely recommend.
She is a good prof and a very nice person. She makes things interesting with lots of examples but her test questions are more difficult than Professor Linden's and it can be frustrating so I would recommend him over Lewis.
She's great at explaining material in a crystal clear way. The only problem I had was that it was A LOTTT of material in a short amount of time. You HAVE to read the book and go to class. Put in the effort and you'll do well
She does a good job at explaining and is very educated about the subject. I like that she is very factual. She expects a lot but is also always available for help outside of class. She's a little too nit-picky when it comes to grading papers so be meticulous.
Very rarely did I feel bored in this class, she was easy to listen too, the material was interesting, and I actually enjoyed studying for this class. She gave lots of examples, which made the information even clearer than in the book, which was already easy to understand.
She really cared about her students and was always easy to talk to and available. She was very educated in her work. Her class was like any SCIENCE class there was much material but it was interesting and she explained things well, and was always prepared for class.
Do not take her. If there is another option, take someone else. I took this teacher just because she fit into the time slot that I needed for my PSYCH 100 class, worst idea ever. I am majoring in psych so I worked my butt off and studied like crazy and it got me no where. I got a 2.3 overall. Take Linden if you're taking Psych!
Dr. Lewis is a great professor. Everybody says this class is hard but not really. The lectures are very clear and if you come to class and do the work, you'll pass easily. She's very helpful and not one of those harsh professors however, she's not a pushover either. I'd recommend her 100%
She wasn't too hard, but her grading was insane. Attendance was not "technically" mandatory, but she used iClickers everyday, and it counts toward your grade, so it basically is mandatory. Don't take her if you want an A.
She knows whats she is talking about down to a T, but when it comes down to the material she doesnt hold your hand. You HAVE to read all chapters and understand them well because the lectures do not even begin to cover all of the material on the test. Shes really tough , but if you love psych and want a challenge take her.
She is very knowledgeable. Does not take attendance but if you skip you will miss alot. Make sure to read the textbook- exams are mixed from notes and book. Very picky about how you do her papers; has to be exactly the way she expects. Really nice. Wants students to do well. Very approachable.
Read the assigned material. Truly is the only way to succeed. I ended the class with a 3.8 overall and I found it to be one of my favorite classes here at OU.
She was a great professor who was really invested in her subject. She made the lectures interesting with personal stories and good examples. The class and prof were great for people who really enjoy psychology
Very helpful. Already took this class once with another professor, and she explained everything so much better! She really makes you understand everything. She's funny as well and it makes the class even better.
She's alright. Her lectures are really boring and since she doesn't take attendance you don't have to go. Just be sure to read the chapters and take really detailed notes. Her tests are pretty hard.
The lectures can be boring if you have no interest in psych. You CANNOT leave class early or go to the bathroom unless you want her to point you out to the class. Tests are hard if you don't study. No attendance neccisarry since all of the notes are on moodle but she does do iclickr questions everyday for participation. Overall great professor.
Amazing! So passionate, wonderfully useful examples, very approachable and helpful. Definitely increased my interest in the subject. Course is really well balanced and structured. Most probably my favorite class at OU so far! Don't miss class though - theres ALOT covered in one class!
Adolescent development has never been a topic I particularly cared about, but Professor Lewis did nothing to make that field of study more interesting to me. Lewis' grading was fair but very tough. Notes were never posted online, so it was important to always attend class. Never let class out early.
I think she's great. You can really tell that she's passionate about the subject. Lecture does get boring at times, but she tries to make it fun. She will be there to clarify anything you don't understand. Her exams are a little difficult so make sure you study!
I thought she was a wonderful teacher! She made her lectures interesting. If you take notes and read each chapter in the book before the exam you will do great. She is always willing to answer any answers you may have and is very passionate about psychology.
She was hard, exams were impossible! no powerpoints or study guides goes against EVERYTHING i've ever been taught in regards to teaching!
I was a psychology major until I took Dr. Lewis' class. She made me hate it. She lectured on power points everyday, and it was so boring. Her exams are difficult even if you study. There's no way you can cram for her exams. She isn't always clear on what she wants, but she's always there to help. Over all, I would NOT recommend her class to anyone.
Her grading scale is ridiculous for a 100 level class - it says on the syllabus you will not get a 4.0 unless you have a 99% and up. Besides that, she only offers ONE POINT of extra credit. I got a 3.6, which was fair...but I'm used to getting 4.0's so I was a little annoyed at her grading scale.
She's nice and funny but her lectures are incredibly boring. I'd rather read the 40-50 pages chapter. She also makes you do these Psych studies/surveys as a big grade. They so boring and a waste of time, in my opinion. Her exams are so long and you're gonna have to cram a lot if you want to pass. I also hate the online quiz in Moodle.
Dr. Lewis is super nice! She explains everything very well in class and her tests are not hard as long as you study your notes and read the book. Take this class if you're interested in psychology and you're actually willing to put some effort into it. It's not a blow off, however it's very interesting and I've learned a lot from her!
This class requires a lot of hard work and studying but it pays off. The professor is nice but she is always pushing her views onto students. She wants everyone to view things the way she does which is so wrong. So if you take her, dont change your views just cause she says to. She's great at teaching, but awful as a person
The classes are interesting, especially when she includes personal stories to explain concepts better. Tests are worth a lot of the grade; quizzes not so much. Nearly all graded material is from the textbook, so definitely spend a lot of time there. I definitely recommend buying the Student Study guide too! Provides you with test questions!
Her lectures were pointless as nothing she talks about is on the tests. Her tests have many questions that could have multiple answers. Don't take this class if you want an easy gen ed.
really difficult class. she likes to talk about her personal life and reads off the powerpoints. not super helpful
Make sure you read chapters BEFORE lectures. No power points. Makes you think about materials and write your own notes. If you don't procrastinate and are proactive, you'll be fine. Will gladly stop and answer questions, available outside of class. Really wants students to do well. Extremely knowledgeable and passionate about topics.
Good teacher overall and helpful. If you study from the book you will do fine. She talks a lot about herself and goes to the very last minute of class.
One assignement, an article review, due towards end of the semester. Three exams (including the final). I would recomend reading before going to class, her lecture are decent. Very passionate about the topic but can get side tracked. Exams are easy as long as you read the book and attend class. Grading is VERY reasonable. Would recommend.
I learned a ton in this class. Professor Lewis is very passionate about what she teaches, and very knowledgeable. The essay portions of her exams are pretty tough. The main assignment of the whole semester is the paper, which she grades very harshly, so start working on it long before it's due.
Couldn't be in this class for more than a day. 5-6 professional level papers, 3 tests which who knows what would be on them, and teaches the whole class like it's a 4 or 500 level class. Nice lady just too wrapped up in her own work to come down to our level. Also the class has nothing to do w mental disorders just boring everyday stupid problems.
Some of the worst lecturing I've ever had to sit through. Very difficult to take clear notes in this class, no powerpoint slides and lots of talking, talking, talking with very little writing on the board. Has a tendency to complicate simple issues. Very nice lady, but a tough class to sit through and stay fully engaged.
Very long lectures and can be hard to sit through, but she's very passionate and you'll learn a lot. 3 exams and if you read the chapters you'll do just fine. Extra credit assignment was an outline. It seems hard, but do it! It's worth the work and writing your paper will be a lot easier! Overall I enjoyed the class.
Possibly the worst undergraduate class I've ever taken. Do not disagree with her on anything, she hates to be wrong. Also, don't be surprised if the exams have questions repeated more than once. I did not find her to be a very good lecturer, her notes were all over the place and she "doesn't share" her notes online. So weird.
Although it wasn't an easy course, I loved Dr. Lewis. You have to work for your grade but she's willing to help and is very personable, especially during office hours. She's very passionate and you will learn a ton, but you have to put in the effort.
Worst teacher ever. She doesn't give no study guides to help prepare you for the exams so you have no idea what's going to be on there. The lectures are so boring and so much material .All she does is talk talk talk and confuses her self. If students are paying for the class at least you could do is try to help them out by giving study guides.
Shes a very very nice person, but Im definitely not a fan of the way she teaches. Very sporadic in lectures and goes on lots of tangents. Notes range from not even 2 pages one day to crazy multiple pages the next (sometimes due to those tangents). 3 exams, 1 huge paper. Will not give out study guides. Lots of information to have to remember.
Reading the book helps, but I managed to pull it off without reading. However, that means that you HAVE to go to class. She doesn't put notes online so you need to be there to get them. She doesn't give any study guides so you have to study all of your notes. It was a pretty tough class but she was a really good professor. So I still recommend it.
What college classes are supposed to be like! Very knowledgeable & is realistic about research, psychology careers, the material, & is a compassionate, nice person. I recommend recording lectures; notes can sometimes be disorganized & she can move quick. You can get by w/o reading but questions on exams are from lecture & book. One extra credit HW
She real cool, peparing students for grad school. You really have to study for exams. I suggest showing up. We had a big paper literature review, 3 to 4 exams, and a few other things. Overall nice professor but its not a blow off class, Get ready to type/ write because she does not present or post slides.
Dr. Lewis makes sure youre aware of whats important for exams and shes easy to approach. Her capstone class had one big paper, 4 reflection papers & 4 exams. Not easy exams, but passable. I had a lot of health problems this semester and I just studied from lecture slides & the book instead of going to classended with an 83%.
She is amazing! So down to earth, approachable and super funny throughout lectures. Dr. Lewis truly wants to see her students succeed. Do your work and study hard, you will be fine.
Overall good professor but a slightly difficult class. Her classes were PowerPoint and lecture-based and the exams had no study guide, but you will do well by reading the assigned chapters. We also had a literature review assignment that will take a while to complete, so start early. You have to put in the work to get a good grade in this class.
Dr. Lewis was tough but fair and very available. I studied like crazy and did well. You have to read the text and take a lot of notes, also must listen to lectures, to get tidbits and clarifications. First section (before first exam) was the most difficult.
Mary is passionate about the topic and wants students to learn. In practice, it doesn't come off this way as there are few graded assignments in the class and though being considered "writing intensive" she makes no effort to give feedback on your writing. This class felt like "if you get it you get it and if you don't I honestly feel bad for you."
Stay far away from this professor. So rude and not understanding at all. Lectures take almost 6 hours on a good week. Due dates are all over the place. By far the worst professor and TA I have ever had. I have also taken other capstone courses before and the workload for this class is almost triple.
Long lectures that don't seem to prep you for exams. Hard exams with at least 4 essay questions per exam. If you are not good at essay questions on timed exams then consider taking your course with someone else.
This class is a joke. TA grades 10x harder than the professor, some get good grades and some don't. Don't even bother w/ textbook. Not enough time on tests for 4 essay questions and 40 mc. Quiz and forums every week, 4 short papers and 1 long. Sent TA 3 emails and never received a response. Test has questions that were never covered at all. Avoid.
Bravo!
Worst professor in human history. Stay far away from this professor. So rude and not understanding at all. Some of the worst lecturing I've ever had to sit through.
Dr. Lewis was not impressionable. The lectures were recorded prior to the semester so she didn't really do anything except for grade and respond to emails. Lectures are dry. If you can stay attentive and take good notes, you don't need the book. Put effort into the papers, they're a big part of the grade. Final paper was short and sweet.
i hated this class
Very condensing. Either you get it or you don't, and if you don't then she pity's you. Blames you for not understanding material, when she said " I don't teach towards material". Its even worse knowing I paid money for this class. No passion in teaching, wants to get in go on tangents and get out for her pay day. Avoid this class. Avoid--trust this
Class is based off terribly written exams, a huge paper, and one EC. Exams unfair because we'd have short essays that she never prepared us for. she grades tough on the lit review. lectures are boring. Her TA kayla graded EVERYTHING & everyone agreed she graded unfairly & wished that Mary B would grade our stuff, considering shes the PROFESSOR!!
Tough course with long and dry lectures. Exams are no joke. I recommend using flash cards. Gives good feedback on essay rough draft. No presentations or long papers.
RUN! Dont even look this way. If you are looking for a stressful and boring time this is your class! Dr.Lewis constantly over explains her 50 slides per chapter that are heavily detailed as is. Shes not relatable or compassionate.Shes seems more dedicated to her research than her students. her test are detailed and hard.TheClassShouldn'tBeOffered.
She is a very nice person but she is terrible at her job. STAY AWAY!
listen... she's not bad at her job, she's just not that great at making YOU feel like you know the material. Each lecture is just her reading/riffing off her slides, not a lot of variety in lecture style, and, most frustratingly, doesn't give any kind of study guide. i struggled most in knowing what to focus on bc she doesn't give you ANY guidance
Dr. Lewis cares about her students and learns names. The content for this course is extremely boring and we just go over PowerPoints each class. Tests are multiple choice with 2 essay questions. No study guide. Seeing as it is a higher class, it is hard. She's a really good professor and kind woman. I would take her course again.
She simply asks for too much and she admits it. Tests are heavily without study guides. You have to read the book or you WILL fail as she just reads off slides for the ENTIRE class. Grades super heavy and has little to no sympathy when you struggle to memorize all 250 slides per exam. Writing assignments are at least 4 hours and will be graded hard
She is one of the worst professors at OU. She's so lazy she just tells you to buy and read the textbook but doesn't get specific with what you need to know. Tests are very hard and the questions are worded so weird with 2 essay questions on every exam. she gives no study guides or outlines, seriously take this class with anyone except for her.
Very tough grader. I wanted to make this to warn anyone that if you are thinking of taking this class, expect it to feel more like an English class rather than psychology. Easily one of the hardest graders out there. I strongly suggest not taking this class, as there are far better professors out there.
Prof. Lewis seems like a nice person and is very interested in her job but I personally struggled very much with this course. The lectures are of her just talking about everything on the slide. I was only able to study for the exam using the interactive textbook (connect). Shes very focused on grammar for a psych class... got many points off :/
Loved Dr. Lewis! She is kind and helpful. I see students struggle in this class b/c they don't review the syllabus in detail for each writing assignment. I have gotten all A's in her course by using her resources! I will admit 90% of the course was self taught - she reads slides that directly pull from the textbook. You benefit more from the text.
Her requirements for all assignments are in the syllabus but she also has a separate document for all written assignments, the information is not all the same that is on the syllabus and the other document. Lecture is straight from the book, you mostly have to teach yourself. Exams all have 2 short response questions in addition to multiple choice
TA grades mostly everything, she graded only one of my papers herself. Lectures are long and boring, mostly from the book same with exam questions. One big paper that is worth 30% of your graded but she provides examples and clear instructions, she responds within an hour or 2 at most during the weekdays if you have a question.
