I really enjoyed having her - she made math so simple and interesting!
She made calculus INTERESTING, which is something you would never hear. Always willing to help and answer any questions.
Tough grader and more than half my class dropped with D's.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS TEACHER! she is the worst math teacher I have ever had. Her tests are totally unrelated to the material and include dumb bonus questions such as.."name 3 films jack black was in" she should assign REAL extra credit instead. avoid at all costs. VERY unhelpful in office hours, she should not be allowed to teach college.
Very helpful!
Extremely easy and a great teacher. You woudl get out of class early alot and the tests were simple. Many of them you just had to set up an equation and not solve completely. She told you exactly what would be on it. Very easy. Definately reccomend.
Very easy teacher. Laid back, always willing to re-do problems until everyone understands. Cancels class often, homework and tests are reasonable. Definitely recommend her.
sooooooo easy! she doesn't even make you work the problems out; you just have to set them up. i didn't learn much, but i got an A. also she lets you out early all the time and cancels classes a lot!! what more could you want from a math class?
Awful teacher. Very bias and for some reason refers to everyone as "dude" which just makes her sound even more incompetent.
AVOID!!!! I thought this class was easy until i was handed the first midterm and it contained nothing that we had gone over in class or for homework. Quite possibly the hardest tests i have ever taken.
I did awful in math30, but she teaches the material really well so its not hard to pass. you never sit through an entire period and she cancels every once in a while. homework is not very long and she gives a lot of partial credit on tests. i would take this class again if i had to.
It's an easy class but she makes the test a lot harder than her actual class. From what I've heard at least 25% of the class had to drop it. She also does not curve the class and she only offers two midterms and one final, and if screw up there is no possible way to make up for it. Worst math teacher ive ever had, avoid her class.
Her tests are really really difficult. I wouldn't have gotten through them without the tutor I found on Craigslist.
Although her tests are hard, she explains things pretty clearly. If you ever have trouble she's willing to help during office hours. She cancels class a few times per quarter which is a pleasant surprise when it happens, but her class goes by quickly and she explains things well.
Class is well organized. She gives you all the homework assignments on the first day. Calculators are not allowed. Homework is assigned for each class and 2 problems are randomly graded. Counts for 15% of your grade. The rest comes from 2 midterms and a final.
I was horrible at math, and bombed her first test. Went to her office hours every day and she was so so so helpful I was able to pull off an A-. As far as math teachers go, I have a feeling she is one of the best.
AWESOME!
Doesn't explain the material well. She also does not cancel that much, at the most she canceled twice. Hated this class and ended up dropping because I felt I wasn't learning.
Her class is really easy if you go and take notes. Most people who don't do well are the ones who wait till the last minute. I am TERRIBLE at math, and suprisingly have an A in her class. Her midterms are harder than the hw she assigns, but its still due-able. Overall easy class &great lecturer.
Professor Long is a great teacher. Many people may not understand her unique personality, but her ability to explain the material is amazing. She goes over all of your homework, and it really helpful. She also takes the time to go over tests. If you take her class one piece of advice is don't be late!
This class was very easy. Prof. Long takes the time to explain each and every problem. sometimes she goes over the entire assignment. tests were pretty easy, like others have said, take notes and ur pretty much set.
i agree her class is easy. i got an A, but tried to tutor and realized i didn't know anything. i had to quit tutoring. she just teaches the basics. . . which is great if you just want an easy class, which most of us do for math. she lets you out early a lot and cancels class at least a couple times a quarter, so that's good.
I had taken two years of calculus before taking Math 30 with her. I found the class to be very easy, tests were easy, not too much homework. She also lets you out early nearly every day
Sooooooo easy. Her class (all of her classes) are like baby math. She only teaches the basics, and only asks you to regurgitate for exams. It's embarassing to call her classes college level. If you want an easy class and don't care if you really understand the concepts, take hers.
Very clear and very straightforward teaching. Short homework assignments, and the tests are basically pulled right from the review with different numbers. You learn the basics and nothing else. Very helpful.
It seems like this teacher would be better for easier classes, but when it comes to MATH 13, it is a bad idea to take her class. She always seems somewhat unprepared and confused during lecture. Homework is long and the grading is somewhat harsh: you are graded on 2 problems out of 20, often resulting in a lower grade.
Not helpful at all. Frequently makes during lecture. Gets easily upset, making her hard to approach.
Seems like she's really easy in business math. I suggest not to take her for engineering math. I can see that she is concise and all, but she sometimes gets confuse in lectures. Her exams are not easy, very very strict grader. HW grading is also difficult.
Not helpful at all.
She is the worst teacher at SCU. Very rude to students. I hate math because of her
DO NOT TAKE HER!! She writes and writes but doesn't make any sense. Half of the class dropped with W. Sad to be at SCU
worst teacher at SCU
Awful professor, she makes you feel bad for asking questions. I had to drop this class with a W because I was failing. Do not take her classes!
Terrible teacher. No one liked her. Not only is she a bad teacher, she is mean too. She once stopped class to go outside and yell ( actually yell) at another teacher because he was talking in the courtyard outside our room. She is unapproachable and useless for questions.
Best Math Teacher I've ever had. Made calculus a breeze.
Great teacher, clearly goes over the lessons, stops to make sure everyone is clear. She dedicates the whole class before the day of the test to student led review, makes it clear what she expects you to be able to do on the tests. I highly recommend her
Horrible! People like her because she cancels class a lot and lets you out early a lot. She is rude, though. It's not fun to be in her class. She talks down to students. She doesn't explain well. It's obvious she has other places she'd rather be.I got nothing out of the class.
the worst teacher you can imagine. santa clara university need to fire her, seriously
She is an extremely clear professor and we learned just the right amount of material per lesson. The homework was never overwhelming, just a few problems a night. There were three exams, all of which were easy if one did a minimum amount of studying or understood the material. Highly recommend, she is the best math teacher I've had.
Homework is easy and gone over before it needs to be turned in everyday. Tests are much harder than the quizes and homework however. The final was way harder than any thing else in the class. She is a little rude and if you have questions she'll help you, but you won't enjoy the way she is talking to you.
very clear but depends on the day. sometimes when she's having a bad day it's obvious and shows in her lessons. material is easy but again, it's obvious when she made the test in a bad mood. homework is kind of a lot but really helps reinforce the lessons, especially if she was unclear. a great math teacher nonetheless
Regardless as to what everyone else says Mary Long is definitely one of the worst professors I've had at SCU. Yes, it is true that the first midterm wasn't to bad, but the 2nd and Final were significantly more difficult. She has little regard for your success in the class and she's pretty fake in her office hours. Overall, would not recommend her.
Math 6 is supposed to be a very easy class, and instead I spent immense amounts of time grappling with the homework and struggling to keep a B.
Professor Long is the best! The material is kinda hard as is but her lectures are super clear and straightforward. The homework and midterms and straight from the notes in class, and are all very straightforward. Math 31 is supposed to be super hard but I didn't think it was too hard at all. Definitely one of my favorite math teachers of all time!
She's a pretty good professor! She can be a bit awkward every now and then but she's open to help you if you need it. She's really cool but her tests can be a little tricky. Vigorous studying is required if you don't have a natural gift for mathematics. Would recommend.
After a very difficult Math 30 class, Long's class was such a relief! Her homework and exams were very straightforward. She rarely gave problems that were meant to trick you or really challenge you. If you are looking to just get through this requirement, take Long!
Loved class with professor Long. She's very nice and attentive to the students. She highly encourages to go to her office hours and is extremely approachable. She gives homework from one class to the other (very short) which helps stay on top of each chapter. Really great professor!
One of the nicest woman I have ever met. Her lectures are very clear and she is always willing to give you extra help. She's so sweet. Her tests are very straightforward. Do the homework to study for tests. She also gives an extra credit problem on every test that has nothing to do with math - free point.
Definitely not a woman to mess with, however she is pretty clear in explaining math problems. Office hours are not the most helpful, but tests reflect what we learn in class.
There was a homework assignment due every day at the beginning of class, and even if you don't understand it you have to turn it in anyways. The tests are challenging.
She is the best math teacher I have ever had. She is clear and makes sure that everyone understands the concepts before moving on. Also, all of the tests reflect exactly what we do in class, so there are no surprises or confusion.
She is super funny and friendly. She was always excited to help during office hours and I always understood the topic better once I left. Her lectures were always clear and never bored me.
She is the best math teacher at SCU, hands down! She is so clear, and makes Calculus seem so simple! If you go to class, pay attention, do the homework, and ask questions whenever you are confused, YOU WILL DO WELL in this class. She is also kind of funny and only gives a couple problems for homework each section. Also, the final is NOT cumulative.
I would take every math class with Professor Long if I could. She has the most concise lectures, doesn't waste time with midterms and instead gives weekly quizzes (that are albeit worth a lot), and is always willing to help. She truly cares for your success and wants to see every student apply their intellect. I had a blast actually learning.
Would not recommend. Is not very nice and doesn't seem to care if we learn or not. Her class is easy, but I didn't really learn anything and was not prepared at all for Math 11. She's pretty rude and fake.
If you are not good at math naturally you will have to do a lot of work for this class. Quizzes are half of your grade yet they are only 3-4 questions with little room for error. She asks you to study the material from 3-4 homework assignments but you don't know what to study or what will be on the quiz. Doesn't post grades on camino.
Dr. Long is one of the best Math teachers. Although she has a sassy style, it is very refreshing in a Math class. She explains concepts with reason and logic. Instead of memorizing, she wants us to understand what we are learning. Also very willing to help in Office Hours overall a very vivacious teacher! Definitely recommend!
Makes Math 31 super easy. Added bonus: she cancels class alot-4 times this quarter already. I agree with what others said that you won't like how she talks to you and that you don't really learn much, but who cares? Hardly any homework, tests are just like homework, lets class out early alot, cancels class. Horrible prof but easy class.
Mary is one of the best math teachers I've ever had. She made math simple and easy to understand for someone who has always struggled with the subject. She has a really effective teaching style which consists of doing practice worksheets in class so you are able to see what you know and ask questions. Quizzes and tests not bad. Overall a great lady
Professor Long's style of teaching was by far the clearest and most helpful that I've ever had. Definitely take her! She's actually very professional and kind.
She's a nice person and her lectures are super easy to follow, but they are the most boring thing ever. I barely passed the class because I kept zoning out and could not force myself to focus. She's accessible outside of class but it's just so DULL. Lots of homework, but your grade is based pretty much on your tests only.
Math 31 with Long was great. The tests are very similar to the hw problems. Hw is graded on accuracy and turned in on paper. Test heavy but so is every other MATH 31 class. She is very approachable if you don't understand a concept, you just have to see her during office hours.
She'll give you credit for doing the homework but if you're wrong she'll deduct points. The math department makes it so you can't retake a test, turn in late homework, and can't miss the final. So she follows those rules which can't hurt you. She is very helpful in class and tries to uplift the students which is good. Not the best or worst teacher
way too hard. boring. dumb policies.
Not encouraging. Don't think she wants students to do well. I was afraid to ask questionis because she's very condescending and not nice.
Heard a professor say to another professor something about "the wrath of Mary Long." That pretty much sums things up.
She gives problems on tests that arent in her review. Only hints that there might be problems from sections earlier in the quarter so make sure you study, but isnt specific even when you ask her. Its as if she doesnt want to see her students do well. Dont take her.
Took her class for both MATH 30 and 31. Professor Long's lectures were very clear and she made sure to go back and help anyone who was struggling with earlier concepts. Her tests are practically the same as the study guide questions, as long as you study and understand them you will do well in her class.
Math 31 is hard, no matter what teacher you have. Out of all the Math 31 teachers, everyone knows her to be the best. She assigns homework due every class, but it honestly helps in the end when trying to study for the midterms. There isn't a final, just a third midterm, which is nice. Overall good teacher, & she cancels class a few times a quarter
She's honestly the best math teacher for 30 and 31 at Santa Clara. She's the only one that doesn't jumble on her words and actually understands how student's think. She explains things well and if you show up to class and do the hw its an A.
I think Mary Long is one of the best math professors you can get at SCU. She is very straightforward in her lectures and makes things as easy as possible.
Best math class I have taken (math 30). She is available outside of class and she will actually explain and do the problems for you. I found this class to be very easy, and the tests and quizzes were very similar to the homework.
Pros: Super easy class. Light workload. Easy tests. Cons: Her attitude. Condescending and mean. If you actually do want help, she'll make you feel stupid and like you're wasting her time.
Shes not a bad professor but I felt that her test problems were a lot harder than the hw problems assigned. I think she takes the ones marked as difficult by the textbook and puts them on the exam, cause they are pretty difficult. Also, tests make or break your grade. Had to drop.
The absolute worst!!! No in person meetings, pre-recorded lectures (pretty sure recycled from old quarters). I had no motivation to care about this class. She doesn't care if her students learn. That is obvious. Asynchronous math sucks!!
Easily one of the most low effort teachers I have ever had in college. The entire class is held through email, her lectures are filmed vertically on a phone and are dated back to 2020, and she is not flexible at all towards students struggling through the pandemic. Do not take her unless you want to teach yourself the material.
the class is held completely online. this is the spring of 2022 and I don't have any other class not in person but every lecture is a recycled lecture form like 3 years ago at this point. Noes not use camino. You need to self motivate to get anything done. Just take another Math teacher for math 31; its a hard enough class with out a bad professor.
Is she lazy? Yes, very. Is she also easy? Yes. Low effort teacher. But her lecture videos are quality. Homework and exams mirrored off what is taught in her lectures. Honestly would recommend.
She is the absolute worst professor I have ever had. Even though the class is supposed to be online, you are learning through Youtube videos all quarter long. The midterms are much harder than the homeworks, especially when you have to teach yourself Calculus.
Prof Long is a good teacher who is available outside class for additional help. The class has a lot of homework but it is all practice for the midterms.
She goes too fast and does all the problems herself. She does a poor job explaining her steps, often time skips over necessary steps because she expects you to know what to do without teaching it. 90% of your grade is based on 3 tests. If you don't understand what she's teaching, it's easy to fall behind in the class and difficult to catch up.
Within the class exams, even the word problems don't make logical sense even if the answer is correct. The classes are also quite quick paced and avoid examples similar to the exams. I would avoid this professor and prioritize considering other teachers when choosing this class.
DO NOT TAKE
I think Mary Long does not really want to be a professor and that's okay. She puts very little effort into things and seems to not really care about you. Yet her lectures are very straightforward and her exams are very similar to concepts from class. She may have not been the prof for me, perhaps don't take her if you want more engagement.
Lazy. Never had a teacher so not into teaching or one who put in so little effort. Snarky. Not helpful. Don't take her if you want any encouragement or a teacher who cares about students.
She would constantly cancel class to go on vacation while lying about where she was and what she was doing. Each year she postpones class for this then crams extra material into each of her 3 midterms because of all the classes she skipped. Also would constantly snap at students. Awful and degrading. She was a massive (See-You-En-Tee)
Never in my entire life going to awful public schools have I met a teacher so lazy and snarky (only because I can't curse on here). She makes students feel like a burden to teach and she's an all around capital B. DO NOT TAKE. I would've gladly taken the hardest professor ever if it meant avoiding this lady. DO NOT TAKE.
Do not trust any of the ratings above a 2... This professor is the most demeaning and rude professor you will ever take, and I've seen her giving herself fake reviews on rate my professor.
One time this girl who was BARELY late to class asked a question which would've taken LITERALLY 5 seconds to answer and Mary Long literally said "I'm not answering that because you were late." Absolute terrible person and a very discouraging teacher. I would literally jump in a lemon juice pool with papercuts if it meant never seeing her again.
Never Never NEVER take this professor. She was nothing but mean to me and my friends the entire term. Every time we'd ask a question she'd look at us like we were a burden and she's just awful and horrible to be around. I would not take this ever again for a million dollars.
Incredibly discouraging and cold hearted teacher. Would rather go to jail than take Mary Long's class again.
DO NOT TAKE. JUST TRUST ME.
I've seen her rate herself 5 stars but believe me- she will be the worst professor you ever take.
Never in my life have I contemplated suicide, I come from a good family and have good friends, but every time I stepped in Mary Long's class I wanted nothing more than to blow my brains out in front of her, just so she'd have to deal with the trauma of witnessing that. Maybe then she'd have an excuse for acting like such a c word all the time.
do not take her class. even if she promises an A+ do NOT under any circumstances take her class. You will want to KYS everyday. just trust me on this one
If this professor is your only option- DROP OUT. I think I'd legit rather lose a limb than have to take her class again. Save yourself while you can.
mary long does not care about her students at all. i felt disrespected in her class, and when i asked her a question, i felt like i was burdening her. snarky, snapped at students, glared at students who were making the slightest disruption in class. feels like she does not want to be a teacher. i would not recommend at all.
She isn't as bad as people say. Not necessarily warm, but is straightforward. Barely any homework.
Class is 3 tests, no midterm or final. Tests make up almost all of your grade but she gives practice questions and a review day. She has zoom office hours and it's very easy to get extra help.
Professor Mary Long was extremely unpleasant to be around. She often seemed disinterested in teaching and was quick to snap at students. Unstuck AI and the free textbook were more helpful than her lectures.
I had Mary Long for MATH 6. Her lectures were pretty clear, but she didn't leave a lot of time for questions, and wasn't very accessible outside of class. Her tests were quite similar to the homework and in-class problems, so if you do well on those, you'll do well on the exams. Just do a lot of practice and pay attention to the textbook.
She is a super great teacher and explains everything pretty well. Homework is super light and the lectures do examples of homework problems. Super lenient with grading on tests and concepts are super easy.
You will have to teach yourself Calculus in order to pass this class. It is not even worth going to class because you will have to spend an additional hour every day finding the information on how to solve the problems on your own. Avoid at all costs.
All she did was go over some examples in the book and would assign us homework that would be due the next class on the lesson we just did; she did not teach, she'd just do examples for us. The week before the first midterm she wasn't even on campus or had office hours... have to self calculate your grade and hw was only 10%, exams are 30%.
If you want to have a horrible experience learning math, Mary Long is the best! Her tests have nothing to do with the review questions or the units she teaches, she throws in problems from units she's never taught. Arguably the worst math teacher in this school, please take an online/community college math course to save your GPA.
Having 90% of your grade based on 3 tests makes an A hard if you mess up on one. Beware that the tests cover more than concepts on the review. Many topics do not get fully covered in class so you will have to reteach concepts yourself if math doesn't come to you naturally. She doesn't post lecture notes and you must calculate your own grade.
