America's Diverse Culture and Heritage - made us read a lot of books, many pages a night. hard tests although does give extra credit
This is an intersting class if you like to read! If not, DON'T TAKE IT!!!
She sucks and is very strange. The class is very boring and she doesn't have a personality.
Has extreme control issues. I do not recommend her. This could be a cool class but her issues get in the way. I recommend taking this course from another professor.
She's pretty hard. You definitely have to study for her tests. If you don't read the books, you won't do well.
Could be an interesting class, but never with her. Watching grass grow is more interesting and probably more beneficial to your knowledge.
contrast to popular belief, although I only made a B in this class, because I didn't try very hard it was much easier than some of the other professors who teach the class so I've heard. I'd advice Magoulick in a heartbeat to anyone who takes america's diverse cultural heritage.
good teacher. interesting folklore class
No personality, actually quite rude. Very difficult to get along with and changes her syllabus throughout the semester!
you will work hard and get a B. Not as interesting as I thought the class would be.
I never wanted to take this class but then again I didn't choose my schedule, anyways I thought it would be an easy class, NOT! I had an A all the way up to the final take-home test and when grades are posted I had a B! I worked my butt off in this class and must have failed the final but I will never know I guess! She is very boring and this sucks
I hated this class it was so bad. Very boring, had to read a lot and would dread going to this class. Not really an approachable lady, stay away at all costs.
I enjoyed this class immensely, but it was extremely difficult. I felt that this was more than a Freshman level class, she is a tough grader and I'm glad I didn't expect more than a B, because that's what I got. I still learned a lot, and feel she is an interesting and informative teacher.
Class was horrible. I had an A all the way up before the final test and I must of had a really bad grade to get a B. Both the class and teacher was boring.

Very interesting class. I only took it to satisfy my core but I was very pleased. I thought she was well informed on what she was teaching and she knows her stuff very well. Not a super easy class but definitely better than many i have taken. I would retake this class anyday!
Not a good class unless you're obsessed with folklore. Interesting material, but very difficult tests and lots of work. Almost everyone fails pop quizzes. Big project at the end of the semester that requires lots of time and research. Don't expect an A. I struggled for a B.
hard grader
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS! rude, unfriendly, difficult to approach, and extremely hard grader. class is dull and exhausting. i wish i'd never taken it. i recieved a C when i could have taken another IDST class and easily achieved an A. i worked hard for nothing. DON'T PUT YOURSELF THROUGH THIS!!
this class was much harder than it needed to be. the reading was interesting, but the class itself was very time consuming. professor is rather rude and doesn't accept excuses for anything. not an easy A, or even B. expect to get a C.
Suck...
This is the worst class i have ever taken! the professor made the class much more difficult than it should be. hard to get a good grade even when u read all your material which is A LOT!! not east class to even get a B in. I DONT RECOMMEND IT!
Sleeper class.
By far the worst class I've ever taken in college. She is narrow-minded, and unless you totally regurgitate the material back to her in your papers, your grades are going to suck! If you don't agree with everything she says you'll also be in trouble. Tends to be very rude. Unless you're totally obsessed with science fiction, DO NOT take this class.
By far the most boring class I've taken in my college career. Made an A
Seriously, don't take this class. It's a waste of time and so is magoulick. She is by far the worst teacher i've had at this institution. You don't have to go to class(notes online) and she won't help you if your grade is borderline, even if there's an emergency. Do yourself a favor and drop her before you make a mistake.
So even though most people totally downed Folklore, it really wasn't that bad. I really am able to distinguish folklore in real life now. However, she isn't the best of help. I got an A, but she can really be ridiculous in her grading and won't always say what you've done wrong. If you are just looking for an easy A, forget about it here.
the class is not too bad she just talks from powerpoints.. theres a lot of reading stories to do and she gives quizzes with only two questions so pay attention. the first exam was really easy if you look at the study guide on her website and know the stories pretty well but you have to study definitely. its easy if you try
Aweful. You have to do a 45 min. interview w/ someone for an end-of-semester project. She's REALLY boring and I honestly don't think she cared about anyone in the class.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!! I really don't think I need to say much more. She is an aweful teacher with unreasonable expectations! I thought the class would be interesting, even fun but no. Watching GPB videos from the late 80's and listening to her "lecturing" is completely useless when it comes time for the test. Her projects are ridiculous at best.
Terrible. Dreadfully terrible. If you want to gouge your eyes out, take this class.
As others have said this is a terribly boring class. It's a lot of work for a core class and the lack of feedback on tests made it very hard to improve as the semester went on. Pay attention in class and take notes and you might be able to do well
really really really disliked this class! it is a shame she is so rude and does not really care about her students because she has a lot of knowledge about folklore & traveling experience. Boring teacher. Difficult tests. Tough final project.
Folklore is hard as crap. She is human but she is strict and sticks to her stuff. Her class is somewhat interesting but she is very dry. Quizzes and tests are hard. Projects are hard to do b/c you don't know what she really wants. Unclear assignments. She expects you to be as smart as she is. Had to really work for a B.
I liked Prof Magou! She seems intimidating at first, but warms up after a while, and is actually very friendly if you just talk to her outside of class a little. You will work in this class but this is college, get over it. The final is hard as are the tests, but come to class, study, read, and youll do fine. Made a B in the class, and enjoyed it.
At first, everyone told me that I should not take this class. (I am a B/C student). I thought it was pretty interesting, class wasn't that hard, you have a lot of readings but they are about fairy tales and urban legends. I didnt mind them and I usually hate reading. Overall I would recommend this class, and this professor.
Not a good teacher boring class i had a high grade until the end i done all her work ( hours of reading) and only made a c when i had a b+ up until the last week of class. Never missed a day either.
she is not a nice person in general. not very helpfull if confused. if you hate reading dont take this class. tests are way to in depth for the selections. she basically tries to fail students.
I am an A/B student, and I also am an English major. I figured since this class requires a lot of reading that I would be fine. I got a B in the class, but I had to work much harder that I should have for a core class. She grades extremely meticulously and she expects you to know it all. Stay far away!!!
It's an awful class.I love reading, and it seemed interesting; so I ignored comments to not take the class. DO NOT IGNORE THIS! She gave me a C on my final project because she didn't like my stories. That's it. I never missed a day of class and got B's on all my tests. I got a C in the class. If you value your GPA, don't take this class.
aweful...absolutely the worst instructor at the school, hands dowwn..this class made me hate freshman year
STAY AWAY. This course with drop your GPA like it is hot. Don't bother studying, you have no hope. This woman is so unfair
Magoulick is just awful. This is the kind of teaching and attitude that gives feminism a bad name. Seriously, I am an ardent feminist, but she has it all wrong. How easy the world would be if men=evil was really an equation we could all live by as simplistically as Magoulick does. Do not take her!!!!
Her tests are hard and she can be very mean when asking questions.
Her tests are hard and she can be very mean when asking questions.
this class was hard! we had pop quizzes every week and she would ask questions that required a specific answer. if you don't like reading do not take this class. I made B but I busted my butt the entire semester...
Horrible teacher. So incredibly hard and unfair. Stay away!!! I'm an A student in the honor's program and I struggled in this class. I studied for hours and hours, kept up with the readings, took class notes every day, and still felt like I was drowning. Tests are so hard, I thought it was a joke at first. She takes this class WAY too seriously!!!
I was worried at first because I'd heard her class was very difficult, but honestly it was a lot easier than I expected. As long as you keep up with the assigned reading and take notes in class you should be fine. The hardest part of her tests might be the essay section but with basic Lit analysis skills it should be fine.
thought women in pop culture would be more exciting but it was so boring and she has the most wrong ideas about feminism. make sure you buy ALL the textbooks and they should be the right edition. KEEP UP WITH READINGS. no quizzes. tests are mainly essay and you have to do lots of analysis. have to do response papers as well--ANALYZE EVERYTHING!
Magoulick is a horrible teacher and feminist. Do not take this class, it is way to much reading. The tests do not even match up with what you study. This is the worst taught class i have taken at GCSU and Magoulick is ridiculous.
This professor does not help you at all with this class. She expects you to print out all of the readings and bring them to class. The load of homework reading is so much. She's incredibly unhelpful and even if you can directly quote the readings perfectly on your test, but don't know the title of one of the thousands of stoies read, you fail.
I took this class a few years ago and I remember it now as one of my favorite classes. It was hard and she expected the very best from you. She as a professor motivated me to try for excellence. I would recommend this class if you like challenges and are not interested in a boring easy A class.
I HATE this teacher. she is not helpfull what so ever, and assigns rediculous amounts of reading, and then ask you to know the titles of the hunderds of sories that are almost indentical. She is rude for no reason, and not nice. I thought this class be interesting but she has made it one of my most boring classes.
I absolutely hated this class. We have to read a ton of stories which are very similar and get confusing. Even if I read the texts I still didn't do well on the quizzes. The tests are more on concepts than actual things we learned so studying her powerpoints don't even help.
Up to this point, definitely the hardest class I have taken. More work than you would expect for a core class. Tests are super hard and the final project is giant and time consuming. Don't take it if you can help it.
Awful, awful woman. Dismissive of her own subject, uses finger quotes in her lectures without a trace of irony, the worst kind of radical feminist. Killed my interest in the subject. Teaches inaccurate information (IE: A supposed relationship between the Romani and Irish Travelers, claims the narcissus myth and the Persephone myth are the same.)
As a teacher she really frustrates me: never updates her material, powerpoints are WALLS of text (impossible to take notes on), and her quizzes and tests feel entirely irrelevant. Sitting in her class, you will learn intro level material but you get the feeling she is taking a small amount of info and trying to stretch it far too much.
Her class is boring and not relevant to any major. She makes crazy claims about strange things and her exams are all opinion based questions that the right answer is her opinion. A ton, like a ton of reading! Most reading out of all of my classes which is ridiculous. She expects you to care about the subject as if it was your major!
Magoulick is by far the most passionate professor I have had so far. Which makes her knowledgeable on all subjects, but also takes it way too seriously. The first half of this class is constant reading, expects you to read a novel in four days. She is extremely clear on what she wants & the last project is worth 36% of your grade- which is easy.
"Women and Popular Culture"? More like Women in Literature. None of the books we studied had anything to do with popular culture at all. A lot of reading. Will give you a vague paper outline and then mark harshly because you weren't specific enough.
I feel like the lecture notes don't help much in preparation for tests. The notes have basic information but the tests are pretty hard. It's annoying when she says you don't have to print readings, but then says it's required to have the readings in class and gets mad if you use a tablet/laptop for them. I do not recommend at all
Well she always has some negative comment to give, even if you do exactly what she wants. She spits out sly comments to people who ask questions and makes them feel unintelligent. She is constantly giving lengthy reading assignments and quizzes. Her tests are impossible, but she does put all her powerpoints online.
LOTS of reading. She expects you to print everything, which she says would add up to approx. 200+ pages. There are 2 books to read. I had her TR so half the book would have to be read over the weekend for Tues. and the other half read by class Thurs. of that same week. Tests are hard and are only short answer and long essay.
Honestly yes It is a lot of reading, but the class over all is not that bad. She is enjoyable to talk to and joke around with during lecture. As long as you do the readings and come to class you will be fine. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't come to class you can miss important announcements, assignments, etc.
Mary is by far one of my favorite professors I've ever had. She has a dry sense of humor, which is my favorite. The material is interesting, and it helped me to understand the world in a new way. She grades hard, but to me that pushes me to want to study more. Which isn't hard seeing that the material is abut fairytales. Would definitely recommend.
A rather poor teacher I believe. She doesn't explain criteria well and doesn't tell you what you got wrong afterwards. It's really not worth it, even if the class sounds interesting, she ruins it.
This prof is extremely dry and boring. I fall asleep nearly every class and I have to pinch myself to try to stay awake during her drawn out lectures. There is also tons of reading! Literally like a hundred pages a week and she expects you to print out each reading to bring to class which is expensive. DO NOT take this Professor!
Literally the worst prof I've ever had. Her exams are opinion based and if you don't have her opinion you're wrong. Rude to students and makes them feel stupid. Requires an absurd amount of reading in a textbook you're "not required to print" but you have to bring to class and can't pull up on a phone, tablet, or laptop. Stay away from her classes
honestly, this class wasn't the worst thing in the world. yes, it's a crap ton of reading, but if you hunker down and study for the tests you can definitely get an A. folklore isn't really something that i'm interested in but she's definitely passionate about it which i always think makes a class more enjoyable.
While she's not my favorite, you really just need to pay attention to pass. Although, she will correct just about anything you say, especially if you're reading out loud and trip over a word (just don't do that, it's embarrassing). But if you don't make eye contact, she'll typically leave you alone.
Dr. Magoulick is definitely not the best professor I've had, but as long as you do the reading (or at least skim it), you'll be fine. We had a lot of presentations and discussions, so she isn't lecture heavy. She's just pretty bland and boring. But, she knows what she's talking about.
Wow. So, to date, my hardest class ever was Dr. Magoulicks class. That being said, my writing improved so much in her class. You dont have to do all the reading, just make sure you read in depth summaries to know whats going on. The final was insane. Go to her office hours to talk about your paper. Thats a must. Take her, but put the work in.
Dr. Magoulick is one of the best professors and her class was one of the best I've had here. You need to read all of the novels or at least read an in-depth summary. Most classes are discussion based instead of lectures. sometimes watch movies/tv shows. 1 presentation w paper, 1 critical response paper, 1 final paper, no tests other than the final
Myth, Magic, and the Modern World was arguably the most interesting and fun course I have taken in college. With that being said, Dr. Magoulick is certainly not one to give you an A, you definitely have to put in the work. There is a lot of reading and papers, but is always willing to help. I definitely recommend this GC2Y!
This was a class that had the potential to be super fun, but this professor was so bland and boring that it made me hate going to class. She expects you to print several 20+ page readings to bring to class and is a tough grader. She also goes on off-topic rants so often that makes you lose the point she was originally trying to make.
I think that this GC2Y is heavily underrated because it was so fun! Yes, there is a lot of reading for the few weeks of the course, but an A is still 100% attainable if you dont do them. The final project is a lot of fun and an easy A if you simply follow all the instructions. Not to mention, there are extra credit opportunities for this class!
I had Dr. Magoulick for Myth, Magic, and the Modern World and honestly I'm super disappointed. The content of the class is very interesting but the professor makes it kind of miserable. She grades really hard for no reason and is pretty mean if you do something wrong.
This class was way more stressful than it had to be. It was International women's lit and what M essentially did was take a bunch of books off of goodreads and have us teach them to eachother. That's it. She had never read these books before and did not prepare a lecture for them beforehand. So she was literally just pulling stuff out of thin air.
The information of the class is great and fun to read about but the lecture was just rough to get through. Tests are very specific and require you to write a paper. First class where I dreaded it and just did not care. Fun but not worth it
AWFUL! I dreaded this class every single day. The amount of reading is almost too hard to manage. She grades so tough yet gives unclear instructions and examples to what she is looking for. Content needs a serious update. Be prepared to struggle knowing your grade because nothing is ever posted online.
I was a big reader as a kid and now, so the class was engaging. Most of the homework is reading, so PRINT and READ--the quizzes are legit. Stay organized and on top of things and when you make a mistake, communicate with her--she's tough but approachable and fair. Don't expect an easy A, but the class is definitely doable with hard work.
Avoid this class at all costs, unless you're willing to give up every ounce of creativity and every brain cell you own. If you are interested in catering to her beliefs, crying over never-ending papers about her warped perception of feminism, and losing your will to complete your degree, she is the professor for you!!!!!
Dr. Magoulick is very knowledgeable and works hard to put her lectures together. She has no patience and is not afraid to give attitude to faculty or students who she believes wronged her. Her classes are unnecessarily difficult and boring. Folklore has the potential to be a very interesting course, but I found myself dreading it due to her style.
Easily the most boring teacher I've ever had. She made a class that could have been so interesting, so dreadful to go too. I love writing, I even want to be an author, but every single time I heard we had to write a paper I cried a little. Don't take her if you don't have to. I'm about 95% sure that she made up half of her criteria. Save yourself.
Professor Magoulick is very passionate about Myths, but it is at the expense of her students. Her class is extremely difficult, the tests are long answer format, and the amount of reading required for a GC2Y just makes it not worth it. If you don't want to have 50 pages of readings to complete in two days, don't take this class.
I was super excited about Women & Popular Culture until I found out that Dr. Magoulick's perception of feminism is WILDLY outdated (think early 2000's "girl boss" feminism, maybe older). She can be pretty condescending and will mark off your papers if she doesn't agree with them & shows movies when she doesn't feel like teaching (fair tbh).
She is a fine professor, but she assigns a LOT of LONG readings that you get quizzed over. The quizzes are not hard but she grades tough. All her testing is in written form and you must UNDERSTAND the information in order to APPLY your knowledge. She has projects that help boost your grade which is helpful! And she offers extra credit!
I had professor magoulick for world lit and the class did not interest me. I didn't have a problem with the professor. She was fine, she talked with a microphone and an n-95 as well as wiped down every surface she touched. For the class, there was a lot of reading and was relatively fast paced. Not a tough grader just not enjoyable.
I have no words. This woman made my life a living hell this semester. She expected us to read a book a week with several other assignments on top of it, and lectured every class on completely unrelated topics. I think cutting each blade of grass on front campus with nail clippers would be more interesting. If you get put in one of her classes RUN!!
Although I did well in her class, and she is a decent teacher, I dislike her as a person. She is very strict, ununderstanding, and overall mean in her demeanor. Despite often being unprepared for class herself she scolds students for pulling out their papers after ger I wouldn't recommend this teacher if you value your time.
If I could fire a professor, I would. She is degrading, she humiliates you in front of the class, and just plain awful. You have to read an unbelievable amount, and her quizzes/tests are beyond hard. She does give extra credit, and towards the end of the semester she is nicer and less hard of a grader. Please whatever you do STAY AWAY FROM HER!!!
Currently taking this class and when I say avoid it at all costs. I mean it. The material we read could be fun if it was taught by the right professor. I believe there is a line where there is such thing as too much homework and she definitely crosses that line. Just a few weeks in and we had already finished 2 books. AVOID HER CLASS!!!
I loved Mary's class, and the discussion-based atmosphere. That being said, this was a very challenging course. I took her for Louise Erdrich studies, and I loved how we spoke about Native American culture and literature. We had plenty to write about, and attendance is very strict. As long as you went to class and did what she asked of you, it's ok
Attendance is required and the first half of the semester is A TON of reading but it's really not too bad. Once you push through all the reading the class is fairly simple and she gives opportunity for extra credit. Wouldn't be my first choice for a gc2y but definitely wasn't the worst class i've ever taken.
Class is mind-numbingly boring, yet completely mandatory. Tests are very long, and make up about 40% of your grade. Lots of novels are required to be purchased and read, and there is a reading assignment due weekly. Insane workload, and boring course.
The course is fast-paced and most of the readings are boring. Your grade is mainly composed of the final and midterm which are mostly essays, and a long presentation based on 1 of the readings. When you go to her with questions she doesn't do a good job of answering them and is very picky about how it was done even though she gave little guidance.
I strongly advise to NOT take the GC2Y class myth and magic. It is a ton of readings, very long lectures, and very "unfair" to some students. It says not to say favoritism is involved, but it is. Good looking out
No space so bear with me. my mom died the weekend before finals and the professor would not respond to my email explaining what happened for multiple days. I had to get my friend on campus to go to her office hours and ask her to email me back. She expected me to take the final with everyone else on Monday. Part two next.
part two here. My other friend was so upset they emailed her asking that I do some alternative for the final instead and to her credit she did allow that. Overall tho a very stressful situation that added to what I was already going through. The Class itself was lecture-heavy and could be boring at times. I would not recommend this class.
rarely feel the need to review a professor - but 3 years & 2 colleges later i've never had one so disorganized, demeaning, & demanding. class content/work alone aren't hard as long as you read, but good luck studying for other classes. she is belittling of students daily, talks through testing, & always rushing. interesting course, dreadful class.
I enjoyed World Lit with Dr. Magoulick! I would recommend this class for bookworms as there is hefty reading. However, the readings are exciting and eye-opening. The midterm and the final are both essay exams, so paying attention to readings and lectures from the entire semester is very important. Attendance is mandatory!
The GC2Y with Professor Magoulick is a lot of work, but using unstuck study alongside the textbook helps manage the heavy reading load. The grading can be tough, but extra credit opportunities make it doable.
I could not tell if she liked me or not, but I enjoyed her class. I learned a lot. She is definitely someone who enjoys reading and writing should take.
If you aren't completely in awe of reading fairytales and myths and such I would avoid this course. It's really bad and way too challenging for a gc2y. It's ridiculous honestly
This class was absolutely awful. She assigns an insane amount of reading for a GC2Y and is honestly just not that nice. Unless you're obsessed with fairy tales and reading, stay far away.
Pt1: To her credit, Professor Magoulick made some good observations about storytelling and also life. And the final project was long but worthwhile. Sadly, this fails to make up for this GC2Y. But before I explain why, I'll point out that "folklore" is a key word for the class, which leans more towards "modern world" than "myth/magic".
PT2: As for minuses, it's a very political class. There weren't many known myths/tales, but plenty of raunchy topics/material (to the point of disturbing or graphic). This included watching "Freeway". And her tone consistently came off harsh, especially when students asked questions in class/office hours, or when she discussed different beliefs.
ok yes this class requires a lot of reading and yes some of her views on Disney princesses are a little outdated (think fourth wave feminism girl boss) BUT as long as you show effort both in class and during the tests, its a very passable class. I thought she was nice and respectful.
part 1 -- Worst professor I've had in my academic career. The class was consistently political, and her strong personal views dominated lectures. If you did not agree with her opinions, it felt like your grade suffered.
part 2 -- There are only two major exams: 1 midterm & 1 final. Both are 2 hours long and demand an excessive amount of memorization & prep. Most of the exam is handwritten from memory, with multiple short answers and a long essay. The exams expect you to recall extremely specific details as if you have no other classes. She talks the whole exam!!!
part 3 -- You read 2–3 novels. The Spindle Splintered is the only one that consistently appeared on tests. There are 2 major projects. Do Project 1 as early as possible and cater directly to what SHE wants to hear—put in effort and you'll get an A.
part 4 -- Project 2 is essentially a second final. Additionally to completing a long-written exam you also have to conduct a 45–60 minute family interview, and then edit it into a short film on how it relates to folklore. There is excessive required reading before each class.
part 5 -- Throughout the semester, many class sessions ended with in-depth discussions that felt inappropriate and often unrelated to course material. These topics were brought up frequently and made the classroom uncomfortable. The focus regularly strayed from academic content. Avoid this class.
