unless you plan on teaching yourself, i would avoid!
definetly not always good at explaining things, especially when new material is introduced. She says to call her, but when you ask a question, she makes you feel stupid, shes not very helpful. basically, she just sucks. two quizes for every test, no curving.
She is probably one of the hardest teachers for this class, and she definitely makes you work a lot. The good side of that: you learn the material. Quizzes and test are straight from what we do in class. The only probably with her is that she talks extremely fast and makes things more confusing than the really are.
actg is just one of those things you just either get or dont get...i think as long as you do the assignments she gives and do the quiz/test reviews then you will have no problem.i have never read the book and i have a solid A in there.tends to talk fast and skimps on explanations though.no curves and wont drop bad test ?s even if everyone misses it
Not too hard. Requires some work, but not hard. It is all straight forward. Always willing to help even gives out her cell phone number. Nice lady I would take her again and which I will for 242

Notes are unclear/unorganized. she wastes class time making students to hw probems. HORRIBLE tests - 20 MC questions for 4 chapters! do not take her unless you want to teach the material to yourself

Has the most office hours I have ever seen, i'm convinced she lives in her office. Always willing to help during office hours. Very unorganized, worksheets and handouts always contain errors, but she always clogs your inbox with tons and tons of corrections. She's not terrible, but i felt pretty unprepared for the departmental final.

She really wants to help you but she makes you feel stupid in the process. I know a couple times I asked her to explain things to me and instead of showing me how she made me feel like an idiot in front of others. Alot of examples in worksheets and handouts but doesn't teach hardly any of the material, you must teach yourself or you will suffer!
WORST PROF EVER- Her handouts, Quizes, Exams are all corrected by students. If you can't make her office hours you're screwed. She doesn't give you the time of day and when she does, she makes you feel like you're an idiot. Most of all, she doesn't know YOU are the reason she's here and thanks to YOU she has a job. -SHE SUCKS BAD.
I had her for 241, so I knew what I was getting myself into. I may never forgive myself for choosing to take her again. She was a difficult teacher last semester, but nearly impossible to follow now. Embarrases you if you ask questions, handouts are full of mistakes, and always blames the students if the grades aren't up to par.
if you are inept with business, insecure with talking to a professional and get easily confused with her authority towards you, then drop out of COB. She is a tough teacher teaching a touche subject. She wants to help but can come off as a bit arrogant to her students needs. If you want to do well in the class go to her office hours and understand what you are doing with the homework.
I've never had a more stressful class. She doesn't even know our names (she doesn't care). She's put material on a quiz that we hadn't even covered yet. When she gets everyone lost during the class she threatens us with a pop quiz. Doing well on the homework (it isn't easy) isn't enough to keep your grade alive when everything else is so hard.
unless you are brilliant at accounting please switch out now! she expects you to be an expert accountant and gets pissed when you dont get something. she appears to want to help students by saying you can call her anytime but when you call shes mad! it is possible to get through this class but beware of the end project, it took around 30 hours..
Don't listen to those idiots who gave her smiley faces. Her lectures AREN'T clear, and she wonders why students don't go to her for help. She's very condescending, unprofessional, and she makes it harder than it actually is. She teaches the class the wrong way. Find someone else if you can... she was a last minute thing for me and I paid for it.

If you actually want to be succesful in business, take her, learn it, go to her for help, she will teach you more than any other teacher and you will remember it. She is a good teacher. Not at all a bad teacher. She's good at explaining the material or showing your errors, but not very good at teaching you when you're first learning it. If you read the chapters before class, her lectures make more sense and you'll do find. She's very helpful at her office hours and takes care of u if you're polite (if ur an **** dont bother)

Her class is very challenging but you learn sooo much more than you might with other professors. She is a nice lady even though she can be intimadating in class. If you do your homework, ask for help, and study the review sheets before quizes you will do fine. The department final is easy for her students.
Yes, I feel like I have learned a lot while in this class...BUT it has come at a cost of my grade. Lets talk about 3-4 hour homework assignments given almost every day. It is a hard subject but she could still make it a little easier to understand.

To begin with, this subject is not easy in any way, but the way that Manketlow teaches it, doesn't help. Pretty much a hit or miss on the exams. DO THE HOMEWORK! It will help you a lot, even though it takes 2-4 hours. Her lectures are pretty much her going over the homework, and then going over a few concepts you have to learn. Boring class.
i would not suggest taking this teacher..you basically teach yourself everything, she gives no notes, homework is long and hard, tests are extremely hard and tricky,no curves on them, she isnt helpful and not approachable at all, i was scared of her the whole semester..i honestly dont know why she teaches..def. pick another professor
Very unclear at times, but otherwise not near as bad as the rap she receives on here. Tests are really straightforward, basically right off the study guide she gives you, and if you glance at the handouts you should be fine. Only studied for the first test and still got an A in the class

Professor Manktelow isn't as bad as everyone makes her out to be. If you do the homework and go to class you'll be fine. 6 quizzes drops one. 3 tests and a final(cumulative). The quizzes and tests aren't that bad as long as you study her study guides, they are very specific. I would recommend her as long as you're willing to do a little work.
This lady belongs in a mental institution...she is absolutely crazy.. my advice is not to take her especially if you are an accounting major because it will not prepare yourself for the future.
Manketelow is one of the tougher accounting teachers. She lacks people skills and must have total control of the classroom (no phones, no whispering). Material can be difficult at first because its new to a lot of people. Her quizzes aren't bad, her tests are challenging. Go to the reviews she holds before tests/quizzes. Do the work for the class.
Professor Manktelow is not as bad as everyone makees her out to be. With that being said if you are not an accounting major, i would not recomend taking her, she will make you work very hard. She is always available to help, in fact she tells you to call her anytime with questions. She was the one to get me into accting. Effort goes along way
Professor Manktelow is a great woman. She will definitely make you work for your grade, but she will be there to help you if you need it. If you are interested in really learning the material she is a great facilitator of the concepts.

I got an A in her class, and it was the worst experience ever. She is extremely moody, takes everything as a personal attack on her, and never teaches the material. Her ideology on instructing is to have the students work out exercises in class with little assistance. She will treat you as a high school student, you have no rights in her classroom.
Prof Manktelow has definately changed alot from these previous posts. Maybe she has been reading them. Shes the kind of teacher that is tough and sometimes hard to deal with but does that in order to help her students. She will always be there for help. Prof. Maktelow is an excellent professor, not only is class interesting, but it fairly easy, I didn't study much at all and got an A- in the class. Tests are a breeze and she is probably the best 241 teacher out there

Her tests and quizes are not hard. Shes just a horrible person. Has absolutely no peoples skills, treats you with no respect, and expects you to know everything. Also moves at a extremly rapid pace. If you dont want to study and put effort dont take her you WILL FAIL.
Manketlow moves very fast in teaching. If you like asking a lot of questions DON'T TAKE HER. She can appear nice but can really lack in respect towards students.She offers to let you call her whenever you need help, good luck getting the courage to do that. Unless you plan on teaching yourself, getting death stares for asking a question, getting rejected during office hours, or getting a grade that is not a true reflection of your understanding of the subject, FIND ANOTHER PROFESSOR. Either you are going to love Manktelow or you are going to despise her. I personally did not click with her, and found her to be a complete b****. I was already taking 18 credits and was not getting anything out of the class, so I dropped it and will be picking it back up with a better teacher. Not too bad of a class, she just made it miserable.

Manktelow is very strict when it comes to behavior in class. Shut up and just sit there and you'll be fine! Stay on her good side and she'll help you in anyway she can! I have to admit I was surprised by how difficult the class was but her classes do better on the department final than other professors. Do the homework and practice CONSTANTLY!
This class really isn't that bad. Like any COB class it takes a couple of hours of studying throughout the week. Go to office hours because if you do then you will get a lot of help. I suggest taking her because you will be very prepared for the final.
She is impossible to learn from. If you take this professor, you WILL be teaching yourself straight from the book. All her tests, quizzes, and especially her project she assigned was extremely UNORGANIZED. The only good thing about Mrs. M is her "willingness" to help. .....if you aren't too scared.
This class is hard. It depends on how much work you are willing to do. If you take Prof. Manktelow for 241, you will be better prepared for the final, and 242. I was in danger of failing her class. I did well on the final and ended up with a solid B. Stay on her good side, be polite, say yes and no ma'am, and you'll be fine.
Very demanding, but teaches you more than any other 241 teachers, by far. This is good because 241 has a departmental final. She's crazy strict in class, but ver helpful in office hours. Stay on her good side, study, and do the HW and a B/A isn't too hard to get.

Everyone who gave her a bad rating just didnt study enough and are sad over the fact that they werent as intelligent without studying as they wished they were. The first thing she says to her students are the two things I hate more than anything is cheating (respectable) and cell phones. If cheating and cell phones seem comparable to you then take her class because you have her logic and will do fine
Manktelow is an excellent Accounting Professor. The class is very fast-paced from the first day on, but if you keep up on your reading and especially your homework you'll do FINE. Her quizzes are a great grade booster if you study (do the quizzes online from the book!). Multiple choice texts and quizzes & she offers many review sessions
I had Prof M for 241 and she was great! But then I took her again for 242 and words can't describe how diff this class was. Something must have happend because she was all over the place. She messed up all the tests and quizes, decided what to teach while teaching, taught complete diff methods than the book. Dont take her for 242, study the book!
I did really well on COB 241 which was taught by Mr Hayes. But i just got a B on Mrs M's COB 242. I was really confused by her! she seemed never follow her schedule. i could not understand what she was doing. She's a nice woman but not a good teacher!
I had her for both 241&242 and she was great!! The subject itself is hard, and you need to stay on task, and keep up with the HW even if she doesnt collect it. She's very nice and if you have any concerns with anything she is there to help espeacially if she knows that you put in effort. A lot of the work is self tought, but still take her!!!
It takes a special person to keep up with her, she is very helpful, moves very fast. If you put in the effort, she will do anything to make sure you understand it. In general this is not an easy class overall but taking it with her, its bearable.

Believes her methods are just so much better than the book so when you don't completely grasp something in class, there is no point in using the book because she has her own idea of how everything should work. When the class test average is 62, the common denominators are the teachers and the tests. Do not take her unless.. well, just dont take her
She moves quickly, which I like. But you need to have learned the material from the textbook prior to class. If there's something you don't understand, count on spending a lot of time in her office, but she is always available. Quizzes are easy, but often have a ton of errors. This gets frustrating, but the class is manageable.
Had her for both 241 and 242. If you really want to learn accounting, take her, it will help you in the end. Tests are hard and you need to study for them, but it will make the final the easiest thing in the world (98%). Just read before class, laugh at her craziness. she is always there to help you and u can call her house.
The class is challenging alone and she just makes it more challenging. Sh'e a great teacher but requires a lot of work with a test and quiz nearly every week. If you put in the time and work you will be able to get the grade you deserve.

If you are the type that complains about every single class then you shouldnt take her because you aren't that interested in school. If you want to learn accounting, you have to do work, and she the best (Especially 241). My friends in other classes came to our final review session and finally started to understand the material with Mank teaching.

Take anyone else for this class. She was no help and didn't even read the textbook beforehand. You basically teach yourself and hope someone in your class can answer questions you have. She even taught us how to do things the wrong way until someone caught discrepancies from the textbook and she admitted she had not read it

Professor Manktelow is the best, I am about to take her again for 242. No this is not an easy class, but she makes it as bearable as possible. I previously had no interest in accounting and got a 95 on my last test, I expect to come out with a B+. Best option for 241! You just need to show her you want to learn, and be prepared for every quiz/test

You never know what your grade is, because she doesn't post them for you to see so you are left to guess. Over Thanksgiving Break: 5 Chapters of Connect, 5 Chapters of written Homework and a Study guide. She gives you two days to do the Connect Assignments. too say the least at some points in the semester you will def be feeling some type of way..

By far the best professor to take for 241. People complain that she is impossible. If you don't study and don't put the time into the class, then you will do bad and complain that she is a bad teacher. Bottom line-easy to get a good grade in this class if you ACTUALLY put the time into the class and not expect to be handed a good grade
Professor Manktelow clearly knows accounting. She is an expert with the material but comes across as unjustifiably rude on too many occasions. Belittles students for asking her questions in office hours. She will definitely teach you the material and you have to put the work in, but she's going to do it HER way (which isn't the best way to do it).
Ms. Manktelow is very knowledgeable of the information and willing to help any of her students. If she recognizes hard work she will try her best to help you as much as possible. 8 quizzes, 4 tests including final exam, and homework due before every quiz. Must give full effort to have a chance of succeeding in this class.

To summarize Manktelow into less than 350 words: She is unbelievably rude and condescending to all her students and uses random arbitrary abbreviations that totally confuse 90% of us. Of course, she's knowledgeable on the subject but it honestly seems like she hates college aged kids. Do not take her.

Professor Manktelow knows her stuff. She has been in the accounting field for many years. This unfortunately doesn't end well for students. She breezes through all of her lectures and uses a lot of abbreviations which are hard to catch onto if you don't pay attention. By far the best dressed professor on campus!
Manktelow just really wants you to care. She knows a lot about accounting, and her explanations can be way over students' heads in class, so office hours are crucial to passing. Try to form a good relationship with her and really show her that you take her class seriously. Do the all the homework for practice. This class takes lots of work.
I don't know what the big deal is, if youre willing to put in the effort and pay attention in class, youll do great. Just don't get behind!!! Once you skip one lecture or misunderstand one concept, everything becomes foggy. Mrs. Manktelow is a very sweet lady, she just comes off as kinda strict & intimidating, but dont be afraid, shes there to help

Professor Manktelow has hands down been the best and most helpful professor I've had at JMU. As an accounting major now taking ACTG 343, I wish I could hire Manktelow to teach all my upper level accounting classes. Her tests are challenging, but if you go to class, pay attention, do the homework and go to office hours, you'll be fine.
Tough grader, not clear about grading as nothing is posted to canvas. Other professors are WAY easier, avoid at all costs or prepare for a B or lower with a good amount of effort put in. She is rude and mean if you aren't real with her, she is a no-nonsense professor. Deep down, she does care.
Manktelow has great intentions for her students & is there to help you every step of the way. She even gives out her phone # on the syllabus & encourages you to call her any time you don't understand something needless to say I would never do that if I was a college prof with 6 sections & 150+ students! As an Accounting major, I really tried in her class and found her extremely unhelpful and rude. She talks about being helpful but when you go to office hours she literally yells at you. I had to retake 241, an at least 5 people who were in my class with Manktelow are currently taking it again with me. She sucks.
She goes out of her way to be horrifyingly mean to all of her students. She doesn't post any grades the entire semester and you never see your final exam or project grade. Had to miss class for a funeral and she questioned me asking how i knew the personwhere the funeral wasetc because she didn't believe me and she's that inconsiderate. AVOID.
Very disorganized. Knows her stuff well. However, she doesn't teach you she just prepares you for the final. She has certain thinks that make her tick so watch out. Never know what kind of mood she is going to be in. On the other hand, she does give lots of extra credit if you go to class.

She's difficult to follow in lectures (which are essential for this course), rude as hell if you see her in office hours, and a general disorganized mess with grading and everything else. I would absolutely avoid her at all costs. Take an 8am before taking Manktelow.
She WILL help you and will do EVERYTHING she can to help you understand. She teaches 241, a 343 student asked if she knew any tutors that could help them study to be able to pass the final, she said that it was too late and the only tutor that could get them ready was her, so she tutored a student to get them ready. Devotion to her craft. Amazing.
She is so rude to students but I think it's hysterical (being that I'm not one of them). Not sure why people think she's hard, Test 1 is extremely easy and all the quizzes she strongly advises you as to what it's on. Teaches REAL world acct'g which is rare in JMU COB241, has a lot of big 4/worldly experience to offer that others just don't have.
I would avoid at all cost. I'm not an accounting major I subject I actually use to enjoy now because of my experience in her class. If you do not do well with yelling then avoid at all cost cause that's what she does when you ask her a question.
Manktelow is the best 241 teacher there is... especially if youre an accounting major you need to take her. The departmental final is super easy if you take her.. she makes you work for grade but she is ALWAYS there to help you. Her tests are hard but she tells you what to expect. To be honest this class will make you regret even wanting to go to college. But Manktelow is one of the most dedicated professors. She will do anything it takes to help you learn the info. This class is hard whoever you take. If you're an accounting major I definitely recommend taking her. 6 quizzes worth 15% that are hard but she tells you exactly what are on them. Dropped 2. Quizzes prepare you for her tests (3) that aren't hard. One project that is hell but teaches you a lot. She's tough but you get used to it. Great teacher.
She's pretty tough but she makes up for it with her presence. Low key smokeshow, makes class a must go just to see her.
By far one of the best teachers I have had at JMU! If you are willing to put the time into her class then she will 100% help you! She is always there to help and really makes you learn to material. I have gotten so much out of her class and the final ended up being really easy! If you show her you care, she will help you!!!!!!
Manktelow is one of the scariest professors you will ever have. She won't hesitate to yell at students for random things. She cares a lot and will not tolerate those she does not believe care as much as her, so go to classes and review sessions. She has a lot of life advice you won't get from other professors. Class is hard, but you learn a lot.

The only thing I learned from her is what kind of person I do not want to be in life. If you prefer a professor that yells at you in her office when you ask reasonable questions or unnecessarily embarrasses students during class (for asking reasonable questions) then this is the professor for you!
If you do not have thick skin, PASS THIS ONE UP. She's a "tough lover" who wants you to succeed but can come across SO mean. 6 quizzes, a HUGE project at the end of the year that isn't hard but is tedious, can drop 2 quizzes. The three tests are HARD but I somehow understand the material after her course. The amount of pressure in the room tho!
I am going to give a very honest rating of Manktelow. She is a tough teacher who assigns lots of assignments. She can be mean if you arent paying attention. But i got an A in the class because she is super caring & understands the concepts. I am taking her next semester for 242. If you get on her good side by participating and trying, ur set.
To be honest, she started out on a good note and the first quiz was easy but it was such a false representation of the class. You have to go to her office for her to care at all about you and your grade. I was at her office 3 times a week from 6:30 to 10:30 for every QUIZ. She has no patience with you and gives you false hope
She's crazy and never put anything on canvas. Just got my final grade but I have no idea how that grade came about. She just writes things on a piece of paper that's projected to the class. 6 quizzes that are basically tests, one dropped, 3 tests, final, project and homework (27 pages, night before a quiz). Do not take her. Almost changed my major
It's not an easy class. You're going to have to work at it. She's tough on you too... sometimes a bit unnecessarily, maybe. If your GPA is in a tough spot, I'd avoid her. But I can promise that you'll take that department final and be well ahead of people in other classes. If you're an accounting major, she's a must-take.
You learn a lot in this class, but teaches it in a way where she kinda expects her students to already know the basics. She puts no grades up on canvas, her tests (3) are tough, and overall just expects A LOT out of you. Definitely go to her office hours to show that you care. If you can get used to her "system" it wont be bad as people say though.
One of the most rude individuals I have had the displeasure of meeting. She is incredibly hateful and accuses her students of not trying and not reading. I put 30+ hours a week into this class and have nothing to show for my work, sacrificing other classes so that I could do her work. She won't answer any questions so don't bother asking.
Basically, she thinks her class is far more important than any of your other classes which is why she demands so much and acts like you don't have other work to do. She teaches fast, almost as if she's teaching a grad course. Also all the 241&242 classes will have Staff as the instructor when you sign up so just pray you don't get her!
Manktelow is notoriously one of the hardest Accounting professors, however, she actually makes you learn and will die trying to help you. Always holds office hours before each quiz and test. Great professor in my opinion. No cell phones, don't skip class, don't expect class to be cancelled.
Do not take this class unless you had her for 241 or you will fail. She expects you to memorize the book and all the things she teaches in class. She is very nit picky and takes points off for everything. Only good thing about her is that her tests are so hard, when it comes time to take the final it's easy
I'm going to be very blunt, Professor Manktelow is probably the meanest person I have ever met. However, she is an excellent teacher even though she is tough. I promise you will learn, you just have to adjust to her teaching style. If you give it 110% you will do fine. NO PHONES EVER.
one of the hardest professors I've had. need to read and do tons of practice to pass. really knows her stuff. nice just do NOT piss her off (don't ever EVER use your phone)
Professor M is the embodiment of tough love - which is something you have to understand before you take her. She is very blunt and can come off as mean at times, but she has the best intentions. She has a fiery passion for teaching and genuinely cares about her students' success - but you need to be proactive and seek her out. Tough, but you learn.
She is incredibly specific in what she asks for and is thereby very strict when grading free response type problems. Sometimes verynice but other times would yell for things she saw as dumb (to the point of being unprofessional). Always made herself available for review and office hours. Do what she asks, put in the effort and you should be fine.
DONT TAKE HER. She is extremely rude, unorganized. She has no plans and goes w/o schedule. You get stuff in the exam that is not covered in the class. Also, forget about getting back your exam papers.

The absolute worst professor I've ever had in my entire life. Extremely rude and one of the meanest person. She teaches like you've already taken the classes before and isn't helpful. I would not recommend her at all
Speaks very quickly, and do not bring out your phone. Quizzes can be challenging and exams are multiple choice style which can be very challenging.
Professor M is tough and she will make you work for your grade. I I struggled in the beginning, but now I am doing better because I am getting used to her teaching style. She is tough and will not baby you. I did not like her office hours because they are unstructured, but it helped others. Overall shes very mean, but knows her stuff.
Mank is the hardest teacher you will have had so far at COB but you will learn your stuff. At first, she seems like the devil but if you get to know here and she knows you it's not that bad. Go to her office hours because she might change your grade in your favor if she knows you and likes you. she loves here cats.
241 is very hard to begin with. Mrs. M really wants students to do well but they have to be the ones to decide if they will do well. Nothing is given in that class, you have to earn it. She is more than willing to help you outside of class. She does use Abbreviations a lot which can be confusing. There are 3 tests, 6 quizzes, and two big exams
241 is a hard class, so a lot of people just blame the teacher.(at first i did too) Manktelow really wants students to do well. She may come across as stern/tough at the beginning but she is very nice. If you want to learn she will make time for you. She will stay at JMU till midnight to help students. Solid choice for professor.
Soooooo bad. She is so quick to jump on you and basically call you stupid for not understanding concepts. If she even sees a phone she freaks out. Her lectures never helped me learn and the book was confusing. Also she wasn't helpful to me during office hours, but she does spend extra time outside of class. Get a tutor and pray.
Her class is easy, but she is a horrible person. On her bad days, she'll pick on her students and humiliate them. She is extremely disrespectful..I wouldn't recommend her to anyone. She is pretty good at teaching the material but that is expected.
Stay away from this professor! If you have her, go on MyMadison and Swap classes ASAP. She's easily the worst prof I've had at JMU. She's not great at explaining material, and she acts mean, disrespectful, and sometimes hateful. Don't ask any questions in class, because she often made fun of students in front of the class for not understanding.
I'm not exaggerating when I say that this class caused me to feel depressed at JMU. If you are not spending 3-6 hours EVERY DAY doing accounting, you will fail. She is short-tempered, mean, will not answer questions, and rude, but DEEP down she has some good in her. Do not take her, but if you have no choice, go to all her office hours.

If you are an Accounting major, then Professor Manktelow is the absolute best. However, if you are not, be prepared to sacrifice your other classes for this one. Conceptuals are a big part of this course so make sure you read the chapters thoroughly. She is very willing to help so make sure you go to her office hours as much as possible.
Avoid. Extremely rude even when trying to be nice and ask honest questions. Doesn't answer your questions when you ask them and turn's the answer back on you. Lectures move so fast no one can keep up and they are very hard to understand. Tried meeting her at office hours but was not helpful at all. Had to drop class after first exam. Dont take.
Professor has a KPMG mug to make it seem like she worked at a big accounting firm. She instead was a factory line worker at Texas Instruments making calculators. I got EVERY SINGLE numerical answer correct on a test, got an 83 for it not being HER way. She will cancel class due to 10 feet of snow on her driveway she shoveled when JMU received rain.
