Dr. Martin is an very good lecturer and helpful. She assigns hours and hours of homework though. The homework load was pretty ridiculous. If you can handle the huge workload, you will learn and understand.
useless course, prof was not helpful
Thorough but great teacher, not a free ride, but if you do what you should, you'll get an A
Amazing teacher
Not helpful at all. Never ever responds to emails and is not readily available outside of class. Doesn't like to answer questions in class and explains things once and moves on. Terrible professor. Take someone else.
I took as an online summer class. The online program did ALL the work for the teacher. She did not have to grade anything, but could NEVER respond to an email or answer phone. Useless professor. The online program was pretty helpful.Lots of practice questions.Program as many things in calculator as possible and you will do good.
She is a tough teacher, and foundations is an even tougher subject. She will make you work for your grade, and her tests are extremely wrong. However, she is always available during office hours & can be found floating around the building all other times. She even helped us with material from another class. She may be hard but she cares.
Dr. Martin has an over all disrespect of students, younger people and anyone not involved as a math major. Homework was given to replace class instruction. Very hard to listen to for an hour.
I am not normally one to leave a negative review of a professor but Dr. Martin has to be the worst instructor I have had while at MTSU. She is also just plain rude.
nice, but very , very , very difficult to pass her tests. GET READY FOR PROOFS!
Excellent Professor, just be prepared to actually LEARN! (memorizing to test won't do it)
She was extremely clear about the grading and what was expected from the students. As long as you show up and do your homework, it is a breeze.
She expects a lot of work from you, which is the only way to mathematics. You wouldn't like her if you don't want to work or don't love math. I had the honor to do advanced graduate cryptography (abstract algebra/coding theory) with her as independent study. She was simply the best --both as a person and as a professor.
Be careful with her, she was my worst teacher by far. She's bad about using material which wasn't covered in class, especially in the homework. She has a very defensive attitude against her students. She grades tests harsh for things like wrong order of answers for example. She did offer extra credit on one test since the average was low though.
She is my least favorite teacher I have had thus far for my time here at MTSU. She expects you to know so much more for the test than what she does in class and what she gives for homework. If you ever have the chance of having her as a professor in a lower-level class (below 3000), don't.
Not only does she lack the proper teaching skills, she also gives pointless definition quizzes that ultimately end up hurting your grade. There were even instances of her telling you what will be on the quizzes only for her to switch it up at the last second. This class was a nightmare. All that being said, she is nice in her office hours.
Lots of online homework and sometimes it's stuff we never went over, but it's do-able and you only have to do 80%. Tests cover every topic talked about in class so it's intensive, but at the same time, you know exactly what will be on it. There are unnecessary weekly definition tests. She seems a little stoic and expects a lot, but means well.
Pointless definition tests that can have an impact on your grade Over assigned homework that is for participation only Wants you to read the book but work problems her way Literally never held a zoom class, 5 minute videos clips for each section Not recommended for an online professor
Avoid it possible. Despite Dr. Martin being a great person the pace she approaches the class at shows a disconnect in knowledge between her and the class. You'll have time consuming assignments every single day. Homework, Definitions, Quiz's, and of course Test during class time.
Martin is a nice lady with some humor but be ready for homework everynight, vocabulary quizzes every week that require a precise english definition, and test that are hit or miss on difficulty. There is a pattern you'll find out of examples or extra material she gives you to be tested over but it still doesn't make it much easier. Expect to work
Not recommended in the slightest. What you see on this site is pretty much correct. Picky about grading, lots of homework, definition quizzes-if you have another option, take that one instead.
Her entire course is built around reading the textbook, doing a ton of daily homework (on webassign), doing a couple random definition tests each week, and then the exam covers nothing you studied or prepared for. Then she takes off majority points for not doing the problem exactly as she intended, and gives you vague feedback to "improve" on.
Better do all tests her way and learn by her 5 minute clips, or she will take half credit off. There was a a test I had every answer right with work shown, yet I got a 78. There's a ton of homework including webassign, quizzes, and definition tests. Def tests are the most pointless thing ever, and Dr. Martin cannot teach. Do not take her.
Don't take her. Grading is horrible and will insult you.
You must strictly follow her requirements to solve her math problems. Sometimes she doesnt accept other methods. For proof problems, you should explain for almost all steps. Definition tests are quite annoying, but you can get full credits as long as you memorize all definitions. A lot of homework and final assignments. Luckily I got an A.
Dr. Martin is a terrible professor. She doesn't differentiate her lessons, so if you think differently than others, good luck. She says many times that you better do the work "her way" & actively discourages extra help from youtube, etc. If you do your work slightly differently, she marks off. Test grades take forever to get back and she's rude af.
Will never recommend taking this professor. The lectures have no structure to them, it seemed like she would just teach random parts of each section, and skip over the confusing topics that were heavily covered on tests. She spends more time teaching how to not do the problems/studying than the "right" way. Read the other comments. All are true.
NOW I UNDERSTAND WHY HER RATING IS 8%.When she explains stuff, she should stop making so many mistakes it confuses me so much...even a student in that class keeps correcting her.. Tells a part to read that will be on the tests but later on it is different when I see the tests. I really wished I took another professor She made a math so hard like:(
If at all possible, do not take her class. I managed to get an A in her class purely because I taught myself. She did not lecture as much as work out random problems. She would say something wouldn't be on the test just for it to be there. If you have a good foundation in calculus, you'll be fine. She tries to steer clear of pointless stuff.
This professor not only lacks the ability to connect with her pupils, she completely avoids it. She rushes through explanations, becomes irritated when there is a question about her chicken scratch. Tests are nearly impossible and that is the only grade that matters in her class, no quizzes. Homework is worth very little. DO NOT TAKE DR. MARTIN.
Try to avoid. You'll teach yourself. Her class must be your top priority. She teaches more analogies than math procedures. Must do problems HER way. Definition test/content quizzes don't prepare you for the test (64% of grade). Assigns Hw needed for the test, after you've taken it. Fluctuates btw empathetic & calloused. Half credit is hardly given.
Def test matter 4 this class, takes off major pts for slight grammar differences, expects more explanation from students than she gives while teaching. Teaches topics not in the textbook. Discourages outside help, but can't give alternative explanations-dont take her unless you have to/get a tutor who's taken her. 12/15 hrs a week of work to pass
She gives the online class the same tests as the in-person one... Needless to say, the material covered did not align perfectly. Definition tests are dumb and she often forgets to open them and has to reschedule. Very delayed responses to emails (if at all). With that said, she did make things understandable and respect the way she lectures.
Absolutely clueless teacher. She states one should dedicate 20 hours a week to her class. Sophomore level math at an unranked school does not warrant hours commensurate to a part time job. Homework every night and pointless weekly vocabulary quizzes. Avoid at all costs. She also requires in person exams for a completely online course.
So this class was described as a fullyOnline class but apparently the test was in person. 86% if the grade for the class was based on 3 tests and final exam. That only leaves you with 14% of the actual online content for the class. And one thing to be noted for this professor is that she will never reply to your emails.I may have to discuss with dean
Tests worth more than 3/4 of grade, no reference sheets allowed on any of the in person tests. Tests cumulative, cover a vast amount of material, yet there are 11 questions on the tests meaning a lot of irrelevant material is studied--which would be fine if allowed index card of formulas for exams. Taken easier 3000/4000 level math courses. Beware!
Only take this class if you are a good test-taker. she is very rude in her emails and does not answer the question. Her syllabus says that you need to put in 20 hours PER WEEK into this class to 'pass.' 5 Homework assignments a week, and a quiz and definition test weekly. So that is 7 assignments every single week. For an online class, yikes.
The tests plus the final make up 84% of your grade. The other 16% is from homework 5 times a week on top of a weekly definition test and reading test. So 7 assignments a week only worth 16% of your final grade. She is very rude when responding to emails and the syllabus states you must put in at least 12-20 hours to "pass" the class. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Please don't take this class in easy. It's very difficult class and the test the worst than anything. The test are very very hard. I failed this class. I am taking it online.
I failed this class, don't take the class for granted just bc it is online. There are only 3 tests within the semester and one final exam. Those pretty much make up your grade. Everything is online except tests which you have to take in person. She grades the tests like she doesn't want you to get it correct. DO NOT TAKE, MAJORITY DO FAIL!
Exam heavy course(exams are in-person) that is graded super harshly. Expects multiple homework assignments a week that only ends up being 5% of your grade. Has redundant weekly vocab quizzes where you receive no feedback. On top of that, she never responded to a single email throughout the semester.I extremely recommend you avoid this professor.
Avoid if possible. What you see on here is what you get. She is needlessly tough. Tests count for most of the final grade and she is a tough grader. If you don't do it her way she will take off points. She is pedantic and stoic. She expects you to spend at least an hour a day outside of class on her course (including weekends).
Did not explain things well. Only 3 tests and final make up majority of your grade. Tests were impossible to finish. Did not respond to emails and kept forgetting what she discussed. Also, submitted grades after it was too late to withdraw with a "W". Avoid her class at all costs.
I don't know how she's still teaching, treating her students like this. This professor is terrible. She ignores emails and her materials are disorganized. I aced all my calculus and upper-division math classes, but this lower-division class was a nightmare because of her. I withdrew. Beware, even if you're confident in math, you'll be disappointed.
Terrible teacher. She expects students to spend up to 20 hrs / week on her class (as stated in her syllabus). And, she counts off points if you don't work the problems her made up way instead of the standard way used in the textbook. Avoid this teacher at all costs. She requires pointless weekly "vocabulary" quizzes and daily homework assignments.
Her poor teaching quality will make you hate linear algebra. Prepare for weekly vocabulary quizzes and daily homework assignments. Also, if you do not work problems using her methods (which are different from the book), she will count points off even if you get the correct answer. MTSU should really think about the quality of their instructors.
Quite possibly the worst teacher at MTSU. Tough / inconsistent grader, overly demanding, needlessly picky, and fond of busy work. The fact Dr. Martin is still teaching means the university simply doesn't value educational quality. Avoid this teacher if you can!
Coming from a pre-med with a 4.0, I spent hours on pointless online homework, 3 assignments due a day. Then hours actually learning how to do the material her way. I relate this course to military camp but calculus and you might not learn anything because it is really easy to fall behind and you have to self-teach everything.
This class has unbelievable amounts of homework and weekly vocabulary quizzes. Half of the time the online quizzes break and grade inconsistently. Avoid this horrible teacher!
She gives bad grades and her exams are verrrry hard.
She is not suited for college level teaching. Her class is mostly busy work. I have never worked so hard just to learn so little. Don't waste your time with this teacher unless you absolutely cannot take another instructor.
All the ratings on here are true. The class is hours of busy work that have no real value. She will never reply to any of your emails or answer any questions. I withdrew within 3 weeks after realizing how incapable she is. If you do not have any other professor available, then skip the class and take it next semester but DO NOT take her.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The only possible way you pass this class is if you have 100% knowledge over all Calc 1 material, or plan to study all day after class. Within this class she makes a point to not explain any material, and just write the solutions to each problem on the board. If you found out you have her on the first day drop!DONT LOOK BACK
A lesson learned: never ignore RMP reviews
All of the other reviews pretty much sums her up. Your time is too valuable to waste in a learn nothing busy work class. Do everything you can to take a different teacher.
Terrible teacher. She will answer phone calls and texts during her recorded lectures. Very distracting.
DO. NOT. TAKE. THIS. CLASS. She is by far the WORST professor I have ever had in my entire student career. By halfway through the semester, our entire class was made up of a total of 8 students because everyone else dropped. All 8 students, me included, are failing and grasping at strings to pass last minute. DONT DO IT...
Please do not take this professor. She would OFTEN make mistakes during lectures, was occasionally late, and very rude. The textbook is required and isn't cheap. Assigns too much homework that isn't useful, and you'll be teaching yourself most, if not all, the material. If there wasn't a character limit I could write an entire essay of criticism.
She dont like taking online classes but she dont have any choice. Exams are very very hard, homework is too much, and she expects you to study math 20 hours a week it also says on the syllabus. Even if you have to take this class take it from any professor except her unless you really have to feel what hell feels.
MTSU doesn't care about her teaching quality because she brings in grant money. Otherwise, a teacher this bad wouldn't still be teaching. Take her as a last resort, and if you cannot avoid her, change your major. Her class simply isn't worth it.
If you still take this class with this teacher even after reading all of this, it's on you. Be prepared for hell ( no joke)
Virtually everyone who takes her class hates her class.
The class not easy
She is less of a teacher and more of a nitpicker. Spare yourself and find a competent teacher.
I dont know if she is lazy or she dont like her job. No reply to email. Cannot find her in office hours. Her test keys are wrongly solved. Not enough material to study for tests. Everyone in her class hates her. If you still take class after reading these reviews its on you my friend.
Please dont take her class unless you want to mess up your GPA and your semester. She does not reply to emails. Her tests are very hard. She has 3 exams plus one comprehensive final of 200 points. Her exams are 84% of the final grade. Its better to take this class in different college rather than taking with her.
I am not sure which is worse, the university for keeping her employed, or her teaching skills.
The other reviews pretty sum her class up, completely terrible and depressing. There is nothing positive I can say about her.
What is worse than vocabulary quizzes in a math class? A teacher who can't grade them correctly.
Over the years I have had very bad professors, but this one takes the cake as the worst one by far. In her finite and limited wisdom, Mary Martin thinks that vocabulary quizzes should exist in a math class. Don't expect a fair grading on those, because she does not have good reading comprehension skills. She needs to find a different line of work.
I can't believe someone who hates her job so much is allowed to keep it.
Lectures were unclear and didn't help. I had to personally hire a tutor to learn all the material. The professor lacked basic communication, which made the class extremely discouraging. I stopped attending in person because the classroom environment she created felt negative. I don't believe this professor is well-suited for teaching.
This is the first instructor I had to get the dean involved with. If you have a question, don't expect to ever get an email response back. not tech savvy and will most likely mess up grades or zooms. she obviously hates her job, DROP THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS.
Out of all the teachers I have ever had, Dr. Martin is the worst. The other reviews sum up her class pretty well... full of grading errors, terrible teaching quality, pointless vocabulary quizzes, kindergarten style homework, and a teacher who simply stopped caring.
I'm a 4.0 student and this was the worst professor and class ever. Terrible communication through email / D2L. Very confusing online outline for the course. Tests at the testing center. Not accommodating, tests are much more wordy than the homework/ lessons, and therefore different than what you study.
Couldn't even sign up for tests in the testing center because I wasn't available for any of the test dates, so I was simply out of luck. Tried emailing multiple times and got no response. Worst professor and teacher in general I've ever had. If you ever see her as your instructor, drop the class immediately.
Don't take this professor unless you love losing thousands of $ or getting bad grades. She sends constant email reminders on how bad the class is doing while ignoring all emails sent to her. Ironically, the material itself is super easy. I got an easy A+ taking this elsewhere, so just transfer it in instead; it will save your scholarships and GPA.
I had to drop the Online Linear Algebra class. It was about 2-3 homework assignments per day(more than 4 other classes combined). Argued with the DAC about my accommodations until the last minute which made the test impossible. Syllabus requires 22 hours per week. Very hostile class. Advisor admitted this too. DO NOT IGNORE THESE REVIEWS.
All time horrible teacher.
This is the worst professor I have ever had in my life. She doesn't respond to emails, and I'm taking this course online. She is the hardest grader I have ever had, and she gives you nothing to prepare for how hard her tests are.
I hope that nobody makes the mistake of not reading these reviews before taking her class. Could add very little that other reviews have not already, all of it is true. Teaches a very easy class as if everyone was a graduate level math major and grades test as such. Also some of the worst deadlines and assignment windows ever.
DO NOT TAKE HER! She is the worse professor ever class averages were in the 20s and she would say “it's not that the materiel isn't being taught its the lack of energy". she gives a bunch of useless online HW which was due in the middle of the day at 3. She does not curve at all and shes a super harsh grader
She is a horrible teacher with no business in a classroom. She doesn't turn her phone off during recorded lectures, so there are constant interruptions. It seems like she stopped caring about her teaching quality decades ago.
Disgraceful on the university for keeping her on staff. She doesn't understand technology and does everything to make her class tedious. For example, homework is usually due at 5. Every other online course I have ever had gives you until midnight. Also on campus tests for an online class? Shame on MTSU for employing such an incompetent teacher.
I am a senior CS major minoring in Math, and this is the most pathetic excuse for a professor I have witnessed here at MTSU. Massive amount of homework that is due in the middle of the day, that upon completing you will learn has NOTHING to do with the exams (even though it says in the syllabus to practice these for the exams). You've been warned.
64% of your grade is from tests that are far more difficult than the rest of the coursework. There are 58 homework assignments. 58. Always due at 3. They do not help you in the tests. I've never gotten below a B+ in any of my math courses. This class I might get a C. Another class had a test average of 18%. 18. Percent. Do not take this teacher.
Where do I even start? PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. IM BEGGING YOU. I didn't think to check her on rate my professor until it was too late. If you're reading this please take another class. If you are aiming for a 4.0, unless you can really put in the work, don't screw yourself over with this class. She's rude, lazy, doesn't respond to emails.
