Wants to teach new age modern dance, but teaches English. Flighty and spacy.
She has lots of energy. Some writing assignments are difficult but overall she grades very fair.I would definetely reccomend taking her class.
Unclear and rude when responding to a question. You're allowed to have an opinion as long as it's hers.
Very libral. Judges you on the first day and first assignment. Is not clear with what she requires and springs up assignments.

She is a very different personality thats for sure, but she gives fair assignments. She isn't really there for help, and that's why I don't believe that her grading is fair. Its like getting a C is the best thing in the world to her.

Sometimes I'm not sure of what to think of her...she says to ask questions in class, then talks to you like you are dumb...I dunno. I have a A- in her class right now, so I guess I'm doing something right.
She is crazy. She offers little to no help or expinations. She is very rude and disrespectful of her students. She is one of the worst teachers I have ever had.

She often makes you feel like your opinion is wrong, but as long as you don't show any bias in your papers, you'll be fine. I got an A on every paper we wrote and she was somewhat helpful during her office hours.
I didn't find her class very helpful. I was in AP English in high school, and I think that her class made me retrogres.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR..She makes this easy class so much harder than it should be. She expects you to know things you may not have ever known before. I hope I never hear the words "Double Darn" again. She makes this class soooo boring.

Her class is evil... I know its a writing course but wow, there's way too much writing involved. I S/Ued her class (luckily) and stop going after like a month because I couldn't handle all the work in this ONE class on top of everything else... hello summer classes... DONT TAKE HER!
She does make you feel bad sometimes. But I have an A in there right now, but I was already a good writer and reader before I got here. If you doubt your writing and reading skills, you may not want to take her class.
She's a really nice woman who loves the humanities. Go to the writing center, and you'll do awesome
She is very picky. Grades differently from paper to paper. She has favorites, if you are not one of her favorites; kiss her ass or get out the class. Yeah she is that bad.

I got an A in her class. If she shoots your oppinion down, turn it back on her. If you stick up for yourself, she will appreciate that and you will get an A. She loves her cats and will probably become one of those old, crazy-A** ladies with a million cats, but it's what she believes in. Stand up to her.

She is overall the WORST teacher i have ever had to deal with. She is of no help with any assignments, she has favorites(which are men) girls good luck, and for a 102 class, this is by far the hardest class ever. Never take her for anything ever. The University should really do something about her.

The woman is a hippy, no doubt about it. I made a C in the class, but thought I was gonna get a B... Seems like she is moody with grading... I would not take her if you could find another teacher.
Martin wasn't as horrible as I heard she was going to be. She still isn't the best either. Tests are a little iffy, but you can do well on them if you have time to read that huge book she has assigned for the class. Service Learning Projects were not ORGANIZED AT ALL!!!! They were a waste of time, but overall......on a scale of 1-10...the class=4
She's not the best professor in the world. If you have the option to take someone else, do it! I didn't have a choice. The tests are totally off the wall. There's no telling what will be covered. Class was just awful! Your ideas are never right! There's a service learning component that just sucks!
I just wanted to remind everyone out there that there IS another Mary Martin at Winthrop. She isn't an English teacher, and teaches Grad students in the Education department. I have heard she is very fair and helpful... just incase you were getting the two mixed up!
Dr. Martin is not a very effective teacher. It's hard to understand what she is looking for. She's not a very good listener and she HAS to have things her way. If you can change your class, do it now! Otherwise, be prepared for a LOT of writing and a LOT of low grades.
Stay away from this lady if you can! Turned in a ppr on 9/21 got it back 11/28 thats the last week of class! u will never know where u stand in her class b/c she takes 4ever 2 grade things and the exam & final ppr are 70% of your grade! Her ego enters the room on time, however she is always late. Don't forget your book, ever. Don't tell her you didn't read something,quizzes will begin if you do so. No tests, easy writing assignments, no 'real' final. Just stay below the radar and have HER opinion, and don't expect papers back in a timely manner.(No using the bathroom during class)

Dr. Martin is a teacher that wants to open the mind of her students. At first she may appear to be a little intimidating but personaly I think it is a front for the lowerclassmen, (guys you do take advantage of profs that give you slack). Howevr She expects openess from her students. She really is a open and caring teacher when u get to know her.
Ms. Martin is ok. She is not a bad teacher. Her expectations of papers are not always clear. But, she is very helpful. She is willing to review and read your paper to help you out.
Dr. Martin is a nice person overall, but when it comes to assignments, her expectations are totally unclear! She rushes you to write papers, but grades them like you had two weeks notice. She gets frustrated when someone ask a questions, and if you go for advice on a paper, she has the tendency to make you feel stupid.
She's really big into class discussions and tries to get everyone to participate, so if you're quiet and don't speak up prepare to get called on. Decent teacher but wouldn't take her again. Some of her comments seem rude but she let us redo some of our papers.
Dr. Martin is unbelievably unorganized. She came to class unprepared almost everyday and didn't put the calendar up until half way through the semester. If you are analytical, you'll hate this class. She isn't hard but she's very spaced out and hard to follow because of it.
If you have very good descriptive writing skills then take her class b/c she is an artsy person and wants to be able to feel and see what your writing "showing more than telling". She's an okay teacher, her paper assignments aren't always clear so you'll have to ask her questions to understand it.

When it comes to Dr. Martin, I'll give the advice I wish I had been given...RUN AND DON'T LOOK BACK...she is very unorganized, rushes you to do papers and doesn't give them back in a timely manner. She is often unclear in her instructions and she is a very tough grader, not tough but fair but BRUTAL. If you can help it, get out of her class.

if she's not THE worst teacher I've had, she runs a good race for #1. Unhelpful, unclear, rude, brutally grades for no reason. Pretends to want to get to know you when you see her out of class. I feel like I wasted a semester learning nothing in this class. If at all possible, do not take her. Be prepared for the worst essay grades of your life.
The rudest, most vague person I have ever come across! She is very inconsistent with returning papers, and makes students feel inferior when it comes to asking questions regarding assignments. i am shocked to see so many bad ratings for this professor! yes, a bit scatter brained. but rude? unfair? not even close. i can only assume level of maturity is low with the students. college courses are not supposed to be easy. if you can't write well, i guess you found out by a low grade. learn from it and respect prof experience.
The class itself is an interesting, and for the most part she is too. In order to pass her class, talk to her about clarification because she has standards and that is what she goes by. She pays attention to attendance and willing to help at any time.

I used to love to write, but she killed all my desire =( Awful instructor. She allows you to revise your papers, but it must be done before the next paper is due, so you end up writting two papers at once. GPA ruiner! Freshman beware.
She seems to be a very unorganized teacher. While I did recieve a decent grade in her class, she didn't seem to be very clear. It didn't seem like she read our papers and just simply rushed through the semester. We weren't able to have discussions as much as I would have liked.
Her directions are very confusing. But compared to all the other Writing 101 professors she assigns the least amount of papers and the topics seem to be easier than all the other professors. She's very serious about doing homework, and often checks to see if it is done or not.
I do not think she as unorganized as everyone says, but she is VERY scatter brained and will tell you random info. Do the homework and I would never miss a class because there is always new info. It does take her awhile to grade so be patient. Her grading is tough but fair and she tells you what she's looking for most of the time.

I completely understand other reviewers' comments on Dr. Martin being a little confusing however if you really want to do well you have to be willing to seek help. At the same time you have to be open to corrections and listening to her recommendations. After all at the end of the day it is her who grades your material. In addition I found her to be quite interesting.
If anyone thinks this professor is amazing, it's the professor herself. I swear this woman is more interested in her past youth than her profession, itself, or even her students. While I personally didn't think she was hard to pass, I honestly spent most days in her class daydreaming. I would not recommend her to anyone.

Graded papers very harshly and never gave clear feedback on how to improve. When asked for help in specific areas she still gave vague, unhelpful answers.

Dr. Martin is extremely confusing and often doesn't even understand what she's trying to say. She jumps between topics related to the course and 'interesting' facts about her own life. She talks a lot about politics and her dogs (neither of which relate to the course) and is often extremely judgmental of other students' opinions. Dislike her.
I didn't like Mary Martin at the beginning of the semester. But it was mostly because I was slacking off. She does assign a lot of reading, too much reading actually. But if you find the time to do the reading, you should be fine. 1-3 question quizzes every class, usually easy if you read . She got better.
This is the second time I've taken a class with Dr. Martin. I was in her healing arts and medicine class, and world lit class. She's very free spirited, and cares a lot about other people, especially the less fortunate. A lot of people will rate her poorly because they don't understand her. She likes to get you out of your comfort zone.
At the beginning of the semester, I wasn't wild about Dr. Martin. But I stuck with her and I actually love her now. She's hilarious. Yes, she can be super unorganized, but her class is still super easy and enjoyable. As long as you actually read the material she assigns, then you should get an A.

Martin is a nightmare!! Shes rude and often times over talks students during class discussion and wont allow them to finish their thought. Going to her office for help is no use because her constant rambling and random tidbits of information causes her to not answer questions. She also blatantly ignores questions and gives off topic answers.
Ironically, Martin teaches CRTW but doesnt think critically herself. If she did, she wouldnt talk politics. or cut students off all the time. We have a lot of classes that are cancelled (why? I dont know, but I would like to get my moneys worth out of a class...). I wish I took this course with a different professor so I could enjoy it more...
Horrible. Rude. Literally called a student selfish and stupid first day of class. Her way or the highway. Refused a student to receive help when the office of Accessibility said it was ok. Cater your essays to her cuz if you have youre own opinion youre done. Prayed I would get hot my a bus on the way to her class.
Dr. Martin is quite possibly the worst professor I've ever had at Winthrop. If you don't kiss up to her, there is was no way you are getting an A in this class. I went to her office multiple times for help and never received clarification on anything. When she did finally grade your essay, you received no real feedback or explanation for your grade
Okay if you're here this is your warning for Martin. She is very scattered brain and unstructured. First day of class she shot me down on an opinion I had. She also just doesn't make sense? She would tell us one thing then do another, or would assign a paper on Monday and make it due four days later. Easy class if you can endure the rest though.
She was incredibly unorganized at best. She forgot about scheduled office meetings TWICE. I signed up for her Healing Arts class for service credit but again tried to meet with her and she failed to make our scheduled meetings without explanation so I chose to drop it. Her inability to communicate is detrimental.
The most scatterbrained woman I've ever met. If you ask a question she literally won't answer it. If she doesn't like you or agree with your options you will have to work harder. She expects you to kiss up to her and it's so annoying. She also doesn't know her own schedule and will mix up dates/ assignments and blame the students for it.
She cuts students off while they are speaking, provides little to no one-on-one help outside of class (even though she says she will), does not tell you how to improve (just what was wrong), has talked with other students regarding personal business in front of the whole class. Don't take her if you don't have to.
She's just not my preferred teaching style. She's not great at explaining things especially when someone asks a question. She will just say to pay attention in class when it's explained. not helpful.
She was the worst professor for CRTW 201. Do not take her class. She gives very little time in between assignments to turn in and her essays are very complex. She is very closed-minded and very opinionated. Take another professor for CRTW 201.
Honestly, Professor Martin is not as bad as these reviews make her out to be. She is very understanding when it comes to getting work done. However she has a CLEAR grading criteria. If you can write a decent essay and follow every step outlined in the prompts, you will get a good grade. Follow instructions and just talk to her and she will like you
Very lenient and a very easy grader. If you come to class, pay attention, and put in the bare minimum effort with essays you can get an A. If you turn everything in you will pass. She's very nice and understanding, I enjoyed her class
Very opinionated. I happen to agree with a lot of it, but she incorporates her beliefs into every. Single. Lesson. Even the final paper. Not that I don't appreciate bringing awareness some of those matters but that's... not the point of the class. I get a little secondhand embarrassment from it. I will say, she does have a certain odd charm to her.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! If you have no other options to take CRTW this semester take it another semester. This professor gives zero guidance once so ever on the assignments and has the strongest bias towards papers. If it doesn't match her opinions she will literally give you half credit. This professor is in need of a retirement.
This has been the most frustrating class I have ever taken. Her class is full of hippy ideas and politics. The book choice for the semester was "Joyful" and we would have discussions on "energy" and "spirit". I received low grades on my essays because she "did not like the topic". There were also times she'd go on rants about Trump.
Dr. Martin is a very spirited instructor. As long as you participate in class, you will be in her good graces. She does talk over you though and is not very open to ideas that differ from hers. There is a lot ungraded work and unconventional discussions for an English class. If you're looking for a structured class, then DONT take this class.
all she does is yap. crazy microaggressions too. she will tell you that a paper is one thing for weeks and then gives the prompt a week before it's due and it's not even close to what she told us it would be. don't take if you care about your sanity
Dr. Martin is incredibly unorganized and unprofessional. She is rarely prepared for class and does not have a clear plan for where class will go that day. She shuts down and good discussion amongst peers. She's never clear about what papers should be about or what she expects from them. Just overall very cluttered and would avoid her if you could.
She's very unorganized give you a date for an essay then forget she gave it to you .Forgets to grade your essays and just grade them however she wants. No additional class work grades except for the essays. Don't take this class
Professor Martin has a unique teaching style, but if you engage with it, the class can be rewarding. Attend lectures, follow instructions closely, and utilize resources like the textbook and unstuck AI for study prep. The grading can be particular, but overall a manageable course.
