Professor McKay is great! I had no interest in this class at the beginning of the quarter, and now I am wishing I was a MGMT major just to have her again. She knows what she's talking about and is easy to talk to. Weekly journals (1 pg.) can be a pain, but they boost your grade a lot. Tests are difficult and based on the readings.
She is a good professor. You will probably learn more from the reading than directly from her. But her selection of reading is very interesting and useful.
You can tell Prof. McKay really enjoys her job and genuinely cares about students' success. Classes are enjoyable becuase they are more discussion-based than lecture based, and she shows relevant video clips to mix things up. You don't need to go to class to do well on tests, but the readings are a must.
I loved this class. Readings are essential but not difficult. Journals are time-consuming but a huge grade boost if you do them. Exams are fair if you study (know the readings!). Lectures are based largely on discussion, so class attendance help. PPTs are basically discussion outlines, so don't rely on them to study. Good class, great professor!
Great professor, wants everyone to do well and is willing to go out of her way to help you. Material could have been boring but she made it enjoyable. Class kept my attention the entire 1h 20. Easy A and a very interesting professor - take this class, and take it with Prof McKay
Good prof, but is hard to take notes from lectures. Lecture isn't that interesting but she tries to make classes fun; she showed an episode of West Wing once. I disliked the weekly journals she assigned, but they were a huge boost to the overall grade.
The lectures were ineffective for helping with the course readings. Her group style did not facilitate learning. The midterm and final were based on random details about the readings rather than the main ideas that were the basis of the class.
This class was all over the place. I walked away with random facts, not a coherent idea of business leadership. The midterm and final were multiple choice based on random facts from the readings.
This class and the professor are just jokes. It is required to go to Sona labs two times in order to earn your participation points. However, even if you went, you would still get no credits because the system will mess up your grade and says the credits are for another class. And of course Prof. Mckay will NOT accept the fact that you went to labs
Prof McKay doesn't care about her students learning or her students in general. I'm not sure why UCSD allows her to teach so many courses. Her tests are based on litter details and many of the multiple choice answers are almost the same. Take Campbell if you can! Her attendance grades are incredibly inaccurate and she doesn't care to respond.
GREAT professor. Even though I got a B-(mainly from missing 1 assignment; KEEP UP WITH HW ASSIGNMENTS, and BE PRECISE)i lost alot of points from homework, but did very well on the exams and final essay. teaches values and other concepts, but sometimes i felt as if she was pushing her ideas on to me. but in the end, i got to the same conclusion. :D
I've never taken a professor I disliked more than her. She shouldn't be teaching at UCSD. She seems out of touch with the material she teaches which is surprising for UCSD professor. I've never had a teacher not accept a doctors excuse until took her. I can't recommend taking her leadership class.
I recommend Prof. McKay! The readings are interesting and not hard to complete in the time requested. Her exams are easy if you read the material but a little tough at times since they reference direct quotes. She is very approachable if you show you are a hard working student. Take her if you are interested in business and workplace culture!
Easy class if you do the readings and buy into the weekly journals. They are not difficult and really help you understand your own perspectives of business if you allow them to. Go to lecture and take notes- the exams reference the readings directly, so read! She is a great lecturer and enjoys teaching the material.
If you can, avoid taking her class. She doesn't bother to hide her attitude and is not afraid of openly criticizing students who spoken out with what their belief is. To her, if it's not what she wants or what she wants to hear, she dislikes it and tells you right in front of class. I was extremely uncomfortable in her class. Great material though
I was expecting myself to lose interest in this class since I was taking it PassNo pass, but she managed to make the subject pretty interesting, which made me try harder than I needed to. If taking the class PNP, keep up with the readings and everything else should follow to the point where you don't need to take the final to pass the class.
Take her! There's a lot to read but if you want to open your eyes and gain some new perspectives, i definitely recommend MGT18 with her! She is an amazing speaker and the material is very interesting. It is hard to get an A because she doen't curve, but an A- is not a problem. Tests are not tricky and straightfoward! Really knows her stuff about business leadership. Tries to foster dialogue and group activities, and her lectures are generally enjoyable and will hold your attention. Tests aren't really hard, but you will need to get the book for partner journals. Definitely would recommend though.
If you can avoid taking this class, then please do. If you can't avoid it, then be prepared to go to useless lectures. You can't use any electronic devices at all. The course reader is super expensive. Tests are stupidly hard even when you've studied thoroughly. Lecture is boring and she thinks very highly of herself.
She doesn't like it when you challenge her readings or her ideas and I don't think that she is very open to other opinions. She is not a particularly nice professor either and comes across as quite arrogant, especially when you ask her questions outside of class. Extremely reading heavy and definitely would not advise you to take her.

She's a good speaker but in somewhat of a pontificating way. The material is very interesting and she knows her stuff. I asked for people for comments all the time as participation, but I stopped raising my hand because I didn't feel very psychologically safe (a concept you'll cover in MGT 18) with her.
The content is stimulating and valuable if you commit time for introspection. I would say that this course is incredibly time consuming. There is little room for error and little to no flexibility, so make sure you attend class for comments and videos.
In class she is a good lecturer and really controls the space well. Accessing her outside of class was never a fun experience. She also has many silly requirements within the class and seems to have a disconnect with students. Best DEI course, otherwise don't waste your time.
I definitely hated her class; she's the worst teacher at UCSD. She doesn't help with the grading and there's no curve. Basically 1 midterm and the final, so if you don't do good in the midterm you're most likely won't do good in the final. A lot of readings to the point that you will get confused. I don't recommend her!!

The readings are not as bad as other students describes, they are very interesting to read. However, the professor herself is not caring nor giving a crap about students. She just teaches in her own way, always rushes everything through, she barely lets you express your opinion.
Please don't take her. She does not really care about students. She teaches leadership in business and says good leaders can take bad feedback. But what is funny that she cannot take any criticize.
The test is multiple choice and hard at because you have to remember who said what out of 18+ different articles, which can span to about 100 pages+. I read everything twice, took flashcards, and notes in class, and I still struggled. Also no laptops allowed in class, so its even harder to take notes. She's a nice person though
The class is centered around the general ideas of the reading, so if you understand their significance to the class you should be OK. She's accessible in office hours and enthusiastic to talk with you as long as you show you're trying (keep up with readings!!), & she reformatted the class since it became a major req: no more partner journals.
The class was not too bad but requires a lot of reading and writing assignments. There was a journal based on the readings due every week and grading was kind of tough. Also, attendance and participation was mandatory. No laptops were allowed so you must go to class and take notes. Exams were challenging but not impossible.
This was one of the best classes I have ever taken because of Professor McKay. The readings are the most entertaining assignments I've ever been given (although, I'm admittedly fascinated by the topic). This course can be seen as a challenging A or an easy B. But if you take the assignments seriously, you will potentially learn a lot about yourself
She's nice. Plenty of class discussion. Topics are interesting. 7 papers. 2 exams, all multiple choice. She says don't worry about remembering who said what for the exams. DON't listen to her. Remember the authors!! It helps so much. This class has so much untapped potential for what it could be. I wish I could teach this class.
Prof. McKay was very passionate and lectures were usually pretty entertaining. There is one reading assignment a week and a quiz about the reading. The midterm and final were pretty easy, just make sure you go to lecture and read. The study guides she provides aren't very helpful, just reread the chapters and you'll do great.

Unlike Jesus's mother, Mary McKay did not immaculately conceive and deliver an interesting, comprehensive course structure. She included 200 too many personal anecdotes and stories that would bore even the students with the most adderall in their systems. I thoroughly regret taking her course, she is relentlessly pedantic and pretentious. periodt.

I hate her, but her class isn't bad. You don't spend that much time with her, so don't worry, you spend most of your time in breakout rooms with your team. There's credit for notes, which is dumb in college, but it's an easy A overall. The quizzes are definitely hard but they don't matter much to your grade. Horrible professor but easy A I guess.

Someone broke into my car and stole my backpack with my laptop in it a few days before a paper was due. I emailed her the same day begging for a ONE DAY extension. She is so inspirational and professional. She is a great role model for students and is very honest with her students. I adored her class and the material, even though it had nothing to do with my major or minor! As long as you do the readings before class you'll be golden!
Avoid this class if possible. I got a good grade on the exam but participation and weekly essays are hard to score. Others are even less lucky. If you get to take her online like i did, best advice: download presentations for exams. You cant look back on readings unless you took notes, because readings are really long and the main points are weird

Take her husband if you can. MGT 18 was easy though for a DEI course, so it is a good choice. You do have to show up for class though and pay attention because midterm/final questions sometimes come from what she says during lecture.

Took FA21 in person. Exams had 1-3 questions about anecdotes she shared in lecture which I didn't appreciate. Besides that, all I did was thoroughly read each week's readings and skim over them again before exams and averaged a 95% exam score. I believe the comments about her strict grading are unfounded, maybe I got lenient TAs though ��.

As a both a student and former TA in the department, I can say with certainty, DO NOT TAKE this professors courses when you can avoid it. Her tests are challenging and her lectures are dry. Her DEI MGT 18 course is joke, teaching antiquated general corporate diversity jargon with no actual substance and her MGT 164 class is just as mediocre. C-
She is not a very engaging as a professor. It is heavily based on weekly short memos. Tests use made up examples that she believes are clear but are not. This professor has a 1.9/5 rating for a reason. Though RMP may often be hyperbolic, the numbers do not lie. Most students do not like Mckay, she is not a good professor

Michael McKay teaches the other half of MGT 18. It seems like he wants everyone to learn the material, but when it came down to the final it was very loosely related to the readings which they were supposed to be on. The midterm was decent if you studied, but the final was worded in a way to seriously confuse you.
While I did enjoy the aspect of going into teams, meeting different people, many many times I was just not paying attention at all during the lectures because I had a such difficult time focusing online. But Im giving the benefit of the doubt, because in an in-person environment, things would be different.
I mean I learned a lot from her, since people are getting sick this quarter, she is not pretty understanding and still enforce her harsh class policies which is why I did not do well as what i expect. Also sometimes, she is a bit of rude when asking her assignments. Only her TA has office hours. good luck if you think you can handle her class.

This professor makes my life miserable. She just wants her students to fail not to learn. Wasting my time and money on her class. Stay far away from her. I wish I could do well on the final. No one likes mckay.

I would not recommend this professor at all, I just transfer this summer, taking her class was a big mistake and it was very unpleasant due to being inconsiderate and selfish. she always lies about when something is coming up as well as her leadership lectures. if you are incoming freshmen or transfer students. stay far away from her.
summer session is hard and her class goes really fast. she is not flexible during the summer session her class is hard no one really likes her and they have to take her class for graduation Not good at all.
Lectures are heavy. An unreasonable amount of work during summer classes. Barely teaches the readings. Expect students to understand the reading almost by themselves when the tests are heavily based on the readings.
Electronics are not allowed during lectures, which is very difficult to take notes while tests are HEAVILY based on lectures&homework readings. Doesn't even have study guide for students. She is racist and does not care about the minorities in her class. talking to her is a wasting of ur time, And trust me, she is there to screw up her students not helping them. I would not suggest any future students take her class. As a former student, no one likes her. It is even shocking to see she does not grade students with disabilities work if they turn in late which means she is discriminating them. she always ruin students grades and mental health just because she hates her students. That is an incredible professor. Her lectures are captivating and she is just amazing!
To start off, I've never really been an amazing student, class has always bored me. Most ratings here are on the polar opposite of my experience- she makes lectures engaging and actually applicable to real life, which is a rarity in most classes. One of our lectures was literally her trying to help students land jobs by using her personal network.
readings are mandatory, and we talk about them in the lectures. Also we are put in groups for the rest of the quarter, which kiinda sucks if you get a teammates that doesn't care about class. And the midterms and finals are gonna be easy is you do the readings and review them.
you're assigned to a group the whole quarter to work on essays/projects together outside of class time. prof is kinda strict about attendance & phone/laptop usage, exam q's mostly come from long readings required every week which were very redundant and she just reiterates readings in lecture, if ur taking just for "easy" dei i rec don't
I really do not think this professor is a good professor. Her TA is an ignorant and she is way more ignorant. she even asked a student to leave her class cuz she is on her phone. stay away.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS! Class content is actually good but the structure is very strict. She does not let you make-up quizzes even you enrolled later.
I am honestly surprised by the ratings on this site. Professor McKay was the best professor I had in my first quarter (for MGT 18) and I loved her classes so much that I took MGT 164 with her for winter quarter. Lectures are basically mandatory but she makes it incredibly valuable and interesting. I never skipped a lecture because I loved it!
Weekly blogs about readings due Monday night- Too much work for what this class is about. Professor talks so slow and uses so many synonyms in one sentence to fill up class time. Tough grader on blogs, easy midterm. Cant use electronics in class. interesting readings but she drags them out too much
I know it's easy for people to jump on the bandwagon that this professor was tough or that the grading was strict, but I do believe that if you put in the effort to sit through the lectures and read the entire readings you will succeed in this course. The exams are reflective of course material even if the journal entries require extensive writing.

Professor frequently goes on tangents, extending lectures far beyond the intended topics. The study guide for the midterm only briefly covers the actual exam content and does not align with expectations. I would recommend avoiding this professor, as she prioritizes her image over the success of students.
McKay is so full of herself, and while the contents of this class are common sense, she uses such an intense rubric for the weekly writing assignments and created a very difficult midterm and final. Class grade avg. was a C. If you care about your sanity, avoid this class. McKay is such a joke.
Very strict with grading and deadlines and condescending when asked for feedback. Material is interesting but very redundant and drawn out; she acts very self-important.
Professor has outdated beliefs and is very old. My main issue with the professor is her strong disdain for laptops and iPads. She has terrible TAs who grade poorly (milana ). There is nothing good about Mckay's teaching skills. I would not take this course.

She makes an easy class into a hard class. The exams are based on 90% readings and 10% lectures. The exams pick apart very niche details in the readings which makes the questions tricky. She's very passive-aggressive and her TAs are tough graders. Class is honestly doable but, for a LEADERSHIP class, it takes up a lot of your time
She is rude and condescending and it has rubbed off on her TAs. Not helpful outside of class, feedback is cryptic and she often blames students when they don't understand something she has taught. Deadlines are also extremely hard, a second late and she will not look at your work much less grade it; it's a zero.
I took this for fun - I didn't need this class - I took it because I wanted to learn...LLLLOOOLLLLL. Singlehandedly the reason I will never take a management class again.
bro i had to take her class twice cz i didnt pass the 1st time. but the 2nd time she didnt make things easier either. she picks favorites in class.and only nice if you look confident in front of her. Plus the blogs, the grading is so tough for no rzn. do them early... tho her exams are lovely tho, cause its based off a lot of quizlet questions-_-

Prof McKay gets way too much hate. She's an amazing lecturer, she knows her stuff. Her class does have a lot of weight on the weekly blogs, which its hard to ace, however there are plenty of opportunities for extra credit with the in class challenge, and just completing the set evaluations. She is fair grading her exams, often dropping questions.
Professor Mckay is a great lecturer, she makes every class very interesting. If you are trying to learn it's a great class, but if you never go to lecture and don't care it will be rough. It is easy to get an A if you want to grow as a leader.
DO NOT TAKE McKay! Avoid her! Tons of readings and exam are HARD! Grading on HW for the whole class is consistent 16/20. Exam are in-person, hand write, and two seat space between every student. People are struggle passing her class with pass/no pass option. Advice from the bottom of my heart: Don't do this to your-self.

Mary has low reviews because the readings are required, but she was genuinely one of my favorite professors. I occasionally skipped class but got 100% on the final. She is very knowledgeable and applies the readings into real-life workplace situations.
Tough grader on exams, lots of homework assigned, Read, Think and Write. She does not accept late work and with the psychology degree and does not know why she can teach business major.
I don't know why she has such horrible ratings. She's actually one of the VERY few professors at UCSD who cares about students and knows what they're talking about. Attendance isn't mandatory but recommended. Her class is slightly more complicated than normal business classes. But she's a really nice person and super helpful too!

Yes she is strict, makes you read articles, and doesn't accept late work. But she is also passionate about the topic, knows what she is talking about, and her class is clear on expectations and the tests are fair. Personally her class has been my favorite. This is an upper division class so don't expect it to be easy without putting in the effort.
Not sure why her ratings are so low. Her lectures are enjoyable and she is poised and careful with her words. Be sure to do the mandatory readings each week and understand the criteria for the leadership blog. There is a team challenge & you get to earn extra credit. The exams are heavily based on readings and slides. Fairly easy class.
Professor McKay is severely overhated, in my opinion. While some people don't get full credit on the writing, you just need to check in with your TA who grades your essay before it's due so you can get feedback. She's an excellent lecturer and you have some reading to do each, but it's all very interesting and worth your time.
I'm shocked at how hard this class is. The material isn't tough, but the tests are brutal with no guidance (study guide is worthless). She says no need to memorize authors, but you must. I doubt she'd pass her own test. My upper div microecon class (said to be hardest class in econ major sequence) had a higher class gpa than this class.
I enjoyed Professor McKay's lectures and learned a lot about how to be an influential future business leader. To succeed, take detailed notes on readings and lectures, and study the authors! Her test questions are fair if you prepare using the study guide and class notes. She also curves tests by removing questions most students did poorly on.

as long as you go to lectures and pay attention in class you should do fine in class. test questions are mostly based on things mentioned in lecture and the assigned readings. the weekly blogs aren't bad if u do the readings.
Attendance isn't graded but is taken. If you miss more than a few classes (she has a list of students) she WILL call you up to the front of the class during the midterm and have you explain why you missed class and give you a condescending lecture on it. It's about 50 pages of readings a week with 450 words on those readings due every monday btw
She makes note of how every student's doing in assignments and attendance just to lecture them about it and make them feel bad. Whenever I saw her do this, I felt so bad. I cant imagine having your self esteem ruined by a professor's disappointing comments. She makes attendance mandatory by intimidation but wont make it something we get credit for.
I wish she was a more understanding person. I missed one class and she made me cry while giving me a personal talk about how crucial attendance is in her class. Her exams are completely about the long readings multiple times a week. If you're not good at retaining information you read, you won't pass.
She is an amazing instructor! I loved this class & wish I could take her again. She's inspiring & comforting. There's a lot of reading but it's valuable for leadership learning & class discussions. Her course helped me grow, creating a welcoming environment. Don't be misled by bad reviews; attending lectures is worth it. I enjoyed every single one!
I don't get all the hate with Prof McKay. She is a really amazing professor. You all should take her for MGT164. Don't be deceived by the negative reviews :(
I don't know why these reviews are so harsh. Prof. Mckay is genuinley so amazing. Her class was engaging and collaborative. Clearly the people who rated it poorly just didn't try or attend class, idk what they expect as a grade if you don't do the work for the actual class. If you do participate in her class and thoroughly read, you will do great.

She assigns around 70 pages of reading a week. She emphasizes that she makes her exams very difficult and adds trick questions in order to make sure that we do all the reading thoroughly. If you like reading, you'll be fine. Good luck studying.
In-class challenges of around 5 paged essays long each. Exams include VERY specific questions from the readings and lectures. Laptops and electronics were banned. Professor recommended AT LEAST 10 hours of studying for the midterm even if you did the readings and attended lectures. Attendance isn't part of your grade but you have to sign in daily.
Easy class. If you attend, you'll pass. Electronics are only allowed in the back 2 rows so get there early if you wanna snag a spot. Her lectures are engaging and she does 2 group writing assignments before exams. Exams are easy if you study. Easy journal entries every week where you can basically write about anything related to the weeks reading.
She does have high expectations for her students tho. Weekly reading and writing assignments. Readings aren't even that bad. Midterm, final, In class challenge. Attendance is taken but not mandatory. She is quiet nice if you go and talk to her. Weekly writing is around 450 words and strict grading, but easily can get an A in class.
Professor McKay makes a potentially fun class into an absolte nighmare. She has 2-3 massive readings to do each week, is not lenient whatsoever, and gives very generic feedback. Granted it's not too hard to skim the readings and pass, but to do weel you would need 5+ hours a week. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
She's not the worst prof here at UCSD. I was expecting much worse before going through the course but as long as you attend lecture semi-regularly you'll pass since the exams aren't complicated. All you gotta do is study the slides/watch videos and you're good. The only hard aspect was the weekly blogs but depends on TA, i just got a tough grader.
Please, I beg u dont take her class. Mandatory attendance, 1 essay 3 reading per week, low grade average letter grade is C-. 100% gonna fk ur GPA.
One of my favorite professors ever. McKay is a really eloquent speaker who genuinely cares about her students and how her class affects them. I learned so much about myself and human nature from her class. If you get the chance, take this class!
Has you write a 450 word essay every week off the 2-3 reading but grades very harsh. Leaves very few comments on how to improve but when improved you still receive the same bad grade. She makes you go to the triton testing center 4 times over the quarter, 2 of which are writing assignments about the readings and the other 2 are multiple choice test
Professor McKay is excellent, please don't believe the "Awful" reviews. Yes, there are weekly 450-word paper that requires critical thinking & attending the lectures matters. Do your weekly readings (~3 articles per week, actually applicable to your life & work which is useful). She is committed to her students succeeding & deeply cares about them.
