REALLY good at explaining, very helpful, lots of examples, interesting labs.
A great teacher with a sense of humor. Her voice makes Chemistry so interesting !

Hard to take notes in her class since she is very unorganized, but her tests are somewhat easy....she grades labs very hard too....
the material is average. u need to keep up with her handout problems as well as the book problems. if u have questions she'll be more than willing to answer them. u just need ask... overall she's a good professor, teaches well.
I have had her for like 3 quarters. just follow her instructions and you will get a good grade. Just dont mess up with the final exam as it is tough and could change your class grade. over all easy instructor and I would recommend her to you.
Never take from Mrs. Newberg. This class is way too hard for anybody. It's ruined my enjoyment of the subject of chemistry in general, and isn't worth the effort. Unless you want to spend 3 hours per night studying chemistry, don't take her class.
awesome chemistry teacher!! go for her..
Ruined my ambitions to pursue pharmacy by making her 151 class IMPOSSIBLE. Avoid like the flu virus.
Good teacher. She tends to teach at a frenzied pace, so you really have to pay attention. Only problem I had was that her lectures really didn't follow a logical progression so I always left scratching my head. Just make sure to read the book and do the problems in there and you'll be fine.
Avoid.
mrs newberg is the best chem teacher! Good sense of humor and very helpful at office hours. Tests are just like handouts & notes. Very generous with partial points on tests & quizzes. TAKE HER!
She is an excellent teacher. She gets a lot of material into each class period, but if something is unclear, talk to her during office hours and she's fabulously helpful. Do each worksheet that she passes out and labs according to her layout. Tests are very straightforward- you either know the material or you don't. I'd reccommend her to anyone.
She is an excellent teacher.
Not helpful or understanding.Very strict on attendence. Do Not Take Her!
mrs.newberg is one of the nicest person i have met in cod.i got 2A's & a B in the gen chem series. you will learn a lot from her.she is very organized but sometimes gets lost in her notes. gives partial credit in quizes and exams. she is definetly not the best, but I would recommend her to anyone taking the gen chem series..
she is a excellent teacher.. u will understand her better than any other chem instructor. not that hard in correcting quizs n exams..u will get partial credit..ur grade will be higher than what u have expected..take all chem classes with her
Good teacher, funny too.
best teacher ever i had 4 chm
Excellent professor. Knowledgable, accessible, tests on the material covered, quizzes are basis for exam. If you attend class and follow her format for labs and study based on lectures, you will succeed.
She is awesome, I totally love Chemistry now because of her. Her tests are easy, she explains the material so that it will actually make sense. She is fair but firm. You'll always know what to expect. I would take her anytime for Chem.
Do not take her if you need to learn!I transfered to 4 year school and took second half chemistry. My backround was so poor comparing to other students.Since I attended and did the homework,I think she didn't do a good job!
easy, helpful and tests and quizzes are easy and come from the topics covered in the class. But be careful about labs, she is very firm and strict when you miss a lab or not properly following the guidelines given. Her method of lecturing is very simple and explains each topic in the simplest way. come to class and labs regularly, will get a or b
She is nice, she is very picky with the lab reports. she is better than Shih but she is still harsh..
She makes rude comments to students and thinks it's "funny". Got a average grade in class, and A's on labs, but she's rude and a non-responsive teacher. Avoid!
not a clear teacher at all.Bet helpfull.
She is a good teacher because she literally tells you what's on the exam since exam problems comes from quizzes and the examples that she goes over during class. Her class is never boring since she is very upbeat. The exam is very straight forward. I know that many people wanted to have her again for the next chem class when this class ended.
Newberg is a fantastic teacher! The material she covers in class is on the quiz/test. Easily accesible if you need assistance. ALWAYS goes the extra mile. If chem is hard for you, Newberg will make learning Chem fun and interesting! If you have a question, she will NOT make you feel silly/stupid. Extra credit nice too! She is a jewel to COD!
Overall a good teacher. Teaches right out of the book. Test are ok and is available for help. She also make you take English tests and other stuff, not counted towards grade though. Dont go late for the lab even five minutes will kick you out.Go to class, read the book daily will get an A.
Confident lady. She is very through n u can learn a lot from her teaching. If you do the sample exercises in the chapters and also the questions at the end of each chapter, you are guranteed a "B" or higher, cause her test questions are very similiar to those in the book!just make sure u'r always on time for lab and have ur goggles ;)
Pro: Professor Newberg is the most clear and excited teacher about the subject. You will LEARN when you take her class. Lots of partial credit on exams. Con: She is arrogant and has a sense of humor that 30% of the class enjoy. Labs: Show up on time and with every bit of work that was asked (Adv. Assignments). FOLLOW her format on reports or FAIL!
i dont know what all these comments are saying but she is one of the most anal teachers at COD.lab reports are ridiciulsy hard, shes not helpfu n better show up to her class 5 mins before, rude she makes these remarks , shes very fast assumes everyone knows chem doesnt cover in detailso avoid..shes the first chem teacher ive ever had to drop @ cod.
very rough on lab reports....verry verrry rough when i mean rough be prepared to have quiz twice a week and labdays are extremly ridicules..im not usually the type to complain but this woman will make your life rough..better be ontime or else she will cuss u out...be prepared to work ur ass off...shes no joke but very smart teacher !
DO NOT TAKE HER! So far, the worst teacher i bumped into and i'm at cod 2nd year. She is very demanding! Kicked out 4 people on the first lab day for stupid stuff (like forgeting chem notebook, i didn't have the book cause it was sold out). EXPECT up to 2 in class quizes, and 2 online quizes A WEEK!
I had Newberg for both gen chems You have to have your act together, but if that's not a problem, take her because you learn a lot. You have to be willing to work to succeed in her class--read the book, following her guidelines on lab stuff, do your homework, etc. She is strict, but there's a reason for that. ALWAYS be prepared for a quiz.
Ms. Newberg is the reason that I'm graduating from pharmacy school next May! She's demanding but if you show true effort, act professionally, and go to her for help, there's no way you'd get anything lower than a B! She's very intelligent and loves her job!
Absolutely terrible. Lectures are way too fast, you cannot read her handwriting on the board, the exams/quizzes are extremely difficult. Her grading is very tough and she has a very mean demeanor. She makes your feel dumb if you ask a question or responds in a rude manor. She may know Chemistry but CANNOT teach it. Find another class!
This class was not that hard. Teacher is helpful, not a very hard class. Do your homework on time, and you should be fine
HORRIBLE. She doesn't explain anything. She expects you to know things without her telling you. To pass you have to read her mind or else your never prepared for class
Newberg is a great chem teacher, she really knows what she's talking about. She's extremely clear on what she wants from her students, it's all a matter of being able to follow her guidelines. As long as you're prepared to work, you'll be fine. Daily in class quizzes/online quizzes, but she's a fair grader and gives tons of partial credit.
She is a very difficult teacher. Daily quizzes on material learned in previous classes. Allows rewrites on labs. 5 unit tests and a final. Expects alot of memorization. If you stay on top of the material and attend the lectures, the class isn't too bad. Her class is very interesting, and her powerpoints are very useful.
she is kind of a hard teacher but as long as you pay attention and come to class everyday to take the quizzes it wont be that bad. she DOES have a lot of quizzes though so you DO get a lot of points but it can get annoying but she grades labs pretty easily and give a lot of partial credit on the tests and in class quizzes, over all hard but not bad
If you have a major that requires a rock-solid knowledge of chemistry - this is the class to take. High work-to-grade ratio, but the Powerpoints and practice worksheets are very helpful. Quizzes almost every class, but it forces you to keep up and helps to contribute to the overall grade. Overall quality: top of the line for any school, anywhere
Professor Newberg is an excellent chemistry teacher. She does start each lecture with a quiz, but they don't weigh that heavily into your final grade. However, they are very similar to test questions. As long as you study quizzes and notes you will do well on exams!! Newberg is also a really nice person! Definitely recommend her!!!
Professor Newberg is very nice but a very hard teacher. Her lectures are long and confusing. If you do a lot of outside work you should do well. If you are a slacker DO NOT TAKE HER. Her exams are terribly difficult, but go over all the material learned in class. And I mean ALL OF IT. Do not miss a single day or you will fail!
This class is not difficult but it is time consuming. Professor is very helpful and knows the material very well. There are 5 exams and 1 cumulative final. Expect a quiz before every lecture. She's a tough grader on labs but tests are not very difficult.
Very well-informed professor. Giving quizzes almost everyday for checking attendance. Be sure come to class, those quizzes will help you a lot on the exam, and the information that you should not miss. Sometimes she rolls over the materials too fast, so I have to re-study on my own.
Mary Newberg is serious about Chemistry. She gives daily quizzes which are challenging yet relevant to the reading. I HIGHLY suggest thoroughly pre-reading the material so the lectures make sense. Test are pretty tough too. Mary heavily focuses on Mathematical reasoning, so get your Math IQ up to par and prepare to do some work.
Professor gives quizzes every lecture, so be prepared. Quizzes usually based on the previous lecture material. Also, problems on the quiz are very similar to problems on the test.
Pros: Extremely intelligent, clarifies everything, open for help, very good at explaining chemistry to the novice. Cons: until you know her you'll think she is very rude, moves too fast through lecture, too many damn quizzes (49 total). Overall, if you're a chem major take her. If you're a bio major don't. 2-4 peeps out of 45 will get an A.
This class ruined my entire semester. You have a quiz every lecture day which is based on stuff covered in the last class. Exams are hard as hell! You gotta study hard to pass the class. I regret taking it with her. I wish there was another professor because this class totally ruined my gpa. I needed 1% to get a higher grader, but she didn't curve it! She has no sympathy for her students. And she doesn't curve her exams. I'd say good luck to all of you and study hard if you don't want the C.
Very picky on labs so be careful! As long as you study, you'll be fine. Study from her quizzes, they resemble the exams and read the chapter because her exams have have multiple choice based on concepts!
She seems to try to prove to her students that she is smart. She needs to just teach us what we need to know and understand that this is an intro chem class at a community college. The kids in this class need to be taught practically and not told of every little detail that they won't ever need to know... Idk I just can't stand her teaching style.
GREAT teacher! Firm, but fair. Uses examples to cement the concepts. Keeps lectures interesting (which is hard for a chem class). Expect to work hard, but the tests are exactly what is presented in lecture. Don't take the intensive summer class unless per week.you're really serious about studying chemistry 40-50 hours
Considering that it is chem 1 and the level of difficulty of this class at other colleges, this class was really easy. Her quizzes were easy and her exams were actually very easy as well. She lectures with slides and doing problems on the board. Don't know how she had so much energy at 7am for 4 hours straight. Pretty good professor overall.
She is hard but she is a great teacher. Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I like the way she goes through examples during lectures. You have to study a lot out of class. She is strict on grading labs. After you get used to her, you won't be intimidated because she is really nice. You will learn a lot from her and will do well if you put effort.
At first I was very intimidated. However, professor Newberg really is nice and helpful. Definitely have to study hard throughout the course but she does a good job of preparing you for the test. Picky on labs and you can pretty much expect a quiz everyday but its all to prepare you for the tests!
I believe in being fair although I am dropping the course due to unfair treatment. She doesn't seem that bad, intimidating at first and loud. She has no tolerance and is not accepting of any excuse for anything, if your mom died she would expect you in class that day. you must do all the work. daily quizzes. must purchase a lot of materials.
No just No This teacher is rude loud and obnoxious. She exudes the feeling that if you are not a chem major you are below her. Quizes everyday and is one of those teachers that if ur falling behind, oh well your just another statistic After a full semester still confused what she wants on her labs. Tests are 70% show ur work 30% multiple choice.
She's a really tough teacher and not very sympathetic, but she's also one of the best teachers I've had. She explains everything very clearly and if you go to her office hours she is always willing to explain. As long as you do all the work and study you'll do well.
The first week you probably think she's mean and does not care about you. As time goes on though, you see she's really nice, knows all her material and can get silly. She explains things pretty well, but she drags a lot at times. I would recommend her, she knows her stuff and it's overall an easy course with her.
She is very educated but she is mean and rude. she wants you to study by your self. and when you ask a question she expect you to know every thing. I don't recommend her.
Extremely rude, loud and obnoxious. Pop quizzes and no mercy in lab. Makes you hate chemistry and definitely not approachable for help. Avoid her like the plaque. I recommend Haque. Or just any other chem professor. A pro though is she provides a Ebook but hard online homework.
Not approachable, rude and EXPECTS to much prior knowledge because she sure wont tell you. Hard exams too. She need to be kicked off being the head of the chemistry department
Do not take her. Very rude and unapproachable. Ruined my entire semester because I need this class. Her 'Pop quizzes" are everyday. Sometimes 2. Snarky and hard grader. Many students are confused on what she wants on our lab reports. Avoid.
Shes seems to loosen up throughout the semester but is still very crude and overall not a good teacher. Do yourself a favor and don't torture yourself by taking her.
Terrible
If the option was available, I'd rate this professor a negative number on her easiness and her ability to teach. I'd be willing to deal with her toughness if she bothered to actually teach the material. Overall she just succeeded in making this class tough and boring to the maximum.
A moment of silence for all of you brave people who decide to torture yourselves by taking this professor even after reading the reviews.
Very profesional teacher sent emails consistently and replied to yours, im not sure why she is rated so low i love her. She explains everything very well and always hinted about things that would be on quizes. She just doesn't like students who dont pay attention then try to have her teach them in 5 minutes, wouldn't you get angry
She is one of my favorite teachers at COD. She allowed rewrites on lab reports, the quizes are straightforward and not worth more than 5% of your grade, and the quizes are a page of last years test. she is super approachable and is super nice in office hours. The online homework helps with the test and she is super clear if you ask questions
She knows her materials, she explain very well if you are not lazy
I feel so bad for all the people who have to take it with her. She is just awful. Do your self a favor and avoid her.
Prof Newberg knows the material really well and explains everything clearly. She gives out MasteryChem and quizzes that is gonna be on the exams so if you study those, you should get a good grade in the class. She also sets up a Guided Study Group with a tutor who took her class before and you can always go to her office hours for some help.
Do not take her! She is the rudest teacher I've ever had. Super unapproachable and makes material way harder than it really is.
The previous posts below that are down-right harsh aren't so wrong. (I don't blame them). Nevertheless, she is a teacher who gets the job done effectively by weeding out students(Mentally weak). Honestly, I despised this teacher the first for a couple/several months, but she made me realize med school won't be any easier. Thanks P. Newberg.
As far as the majority of the reviews here go, they are pretty accurate in that she is one of the worst teachers i've ever taken. If you are not a chem major she automatically thinks you are below her. Rude and unapproachable, it's almost like she gets mad that you don't remember all the material from first semester. Fast talker, tough grader.
Basically, the only way to pass the class is to read the book ahead of time, she basically copies everything from the book, and review her power points. She talks fast, so there's no point in attempting to take notes, print the slides and follow from there. Tough grader and asking her questions did not help.
Professor Newberg was a terrible chem teacher and I wish I had not taken her. She goes around checking our prelabs before every lab and commenting out loud whenever you get one question wrong so that the rest of the class can hear. Aside from being rude, she doesn't know how to teach. We would get mini quizzes every day which she went over too fast
Might seem rude because she is real with her students. Calls people out for slacking. Quizzes everyday over the material from the last lecture, tests are easy because it's all of the quizzes stapled together. To get an A in her class: pay attention during the lecture, take labs seriously, take your time doing MC!
She depends a lot on her powerpoints. I learned most of the material outside of class. She gives a lot of space to learn the material outside of class. Constantly reminds about outside resources like tutors and learning center. She can be a bit confusing at times because she also says "You don't need to know this but in 1552..."
I have just taken the class with Professor Newberg. I can't be more thankful that she was the one who replaced our teacher because he couldn't finish this course. It feels like in the last two weeks with her I learned way more that I had during the entire semester. I'm sure I would never pass the ACS exam if she didn't substitute.
Mary was hard to understand she barely helped ones who were struggling
If you want to teach chemistry to yourself, this is the class for you! She does not seem to care much about students grades or whether they comprehend the material. In a way it does prepare you for the real world where everything isn't handed to you. You will have to work HARD to obtain a good grade in this course. She also can be rude.
Best teacher ever!! Her way of teaching is amazing . Lecture first then wrksheet next really helps you understand the material. Some students really slowed down the class would recommend her to not slow down for those few who don't comphrehend the class. It is a college level course if you can't handle it, maybe you shouldn't be in college!
Great teacher! If you like terrible teachers, habitually skips over important material, then puts it on tests, and expects everyone to know. Hypothetically if theres 30 students at the beginning the 15 or 20 left in the class by the end hate her. Go to amazon and buy a chemistry for dummys book it will teach you better than her.
horrible teacher, she is very rude and naughty
Took her CHEM 0485 course over the summer. She gave out many worksheets and her lectures were very clear. There will be quite a lot of pre/post labs but overall very easy teacher/grader. I highly recommend her.
Teach yourself. Do not rely on the teacher to gain a better understanding of the material.
Might be controversial but I honestly believe that she's better at teaching high school chem rather than college course chem. (i had to take highschool chem again even though I passed with a C first semster and then a B second) online course you hadto buythe lab equipment($$$). lets you redo homework for full points and responds to emails quick
Personally I think professor Newberg deserves a much higher rating. She is caring and willing to help students. Her class is fast paced but if you prepare well before the class you will succeed. She is very inspirational. I learned a lot besides chemistry from class.
I have never had this bad of a teacher in my life. I am taking pre-chem for the summer and she assigns more work than my other 2 summer classes which are bio and pre-calc (both 5 credit classes). The class doesn't even count for a grade or affect your GPA and does not give good feedback. Do not recommend this teacher!!!
Her personality is better than I expected (from these reviews); she's sometimes humorous. But she definitely does teach FAST! I relied on Uncle Textbook (Pearson guy) a LOT. Bc of how fast she is, I had to be extra prepared, so I studied heavily for her class. Her expectations can be quite high. Her class made me learn time management, and..stress.
This course is very rigorous and she made it even more difficult. Her lectures are pointless b/c she will talk about everything BUT the actual material then hands out a worksheet that she expects us to know?? Her grading and test are very harsh you. I hardly got a B and its because I worked so hard. Do not take this professor.
I liked P. Newberg, but she's very fast, messy at the white board, probably not meant for intro but more advanced chem classes. It was difficult to keep up with her, she does offer help at office hours and such, extra credit, but it's like a fight to keep your head above water in this course, especially if you're not a natural at chemistry!
This was the WORST professor I have ever had. Pop quizzes constantly. Extremely rude. All of my classmates got a C or lower and complained how awful she was and said they wished they had read up on her on Rate My Professor. If you want to fail take this old lady who takes the quizzes alongside her classmates because she finds it fun!!
Deducts lab points for being just 1 minute late. Quizzes given immediately, only allowed 10 minutes. >10 min late=zero. HW due 4 times a week: 1 pre-lab assignment, 2 HW practice days, 1 class reflection. Most stressful part is having to figure out how to teach yourself all the material. NOT GOOD AT TEACHING and speeds through material.
You don't even need to read the book or any of the other material if you just do the homework in this course. An easy class to pass but not very friendly over email.
Taking the online version of her Basic Lab and Computation course... It is not going. She is difficult to work with. Makes you print out every assignment, even though its an online class. Im sure it would be better in person, but the online version of this course needs heavy reworking. Avoid if you can.
After taking this class, I think the class itself prepares you very well for 1551. If you do good in 0485 you will do good in 1551. But, the fact she just gives worksheets, and no online lectures on how to do the problems makes this class much harder than it has to be. If she added a few example problems and how to do them i would raise to a 4 or 5
If you enter lab class even 1 or 2 minutes late, then she will deduct points, and call you out in front of everyone. There is a quiz every single week during the first 10 minutes of class, if you don't show up during that time then you get a 0. Personally, her fast-paced teaching style was not for me, I had to learn the material at home sometimes.
Professor Newberg's class is rigorous but rewarding. She moves quickly, so staying engaged is key. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for mastering the material. Overall, a challenging but worthwhile course.
Professor Newberg is a very hard grader, she can be rude and lacks compassion for her students, she's not good at explaining the material and makes it a lot harder then what it should be. I don't recommend this professor at all. Save yourself while you can because my biggest regret was taking her class.
Just don't.
