Dr. Stein is very down to earth and straight forward. She's very FUNNY and easy to get along with as long as your fair. Com to class and study her Power Points and You will do fine. She gives a alot of extra credit and quizzes which are good if your doing bad in class. Basically She is Fair, Approachable, Helpful, Understandable, Funny, & Down

bio 380 is a very hard subject and mary pat is the best professor i have had so far. She definately loves the subject and knows what she is talking about. I took this class last FALL 06 and her first semester to teach in CSUN. She is nice and helps you if you do not understand the discussion. She answers emails and entertains questions. Make an appoinment with her if you need help. Her power point lectures serves as a study guide. Do not depend on the slides, always go back and read the textbook.

She is straight forward about having quizzes everyweek. She is willing to answer questions and would help you out if you do not understand the lecture. Her class is challenging but, you can succeed if you study and do what is required from you.

As long as you follow her direction, you're ok and shold should pull a B with out killing your self. She's great and you'll enjoy the lectures and extra credits which will help you raise your average in the class. It was the only class i enjoyed during this semester. every wednesday we had a quiz(about 3 questions, straight from her last lecture).there are 3 exams and 2 papers.Her powerpoints are online.so basically if you know the powerpoints and her notes you will do fine.very fair grader. she makes Cell Biology an easy and fun subject.take her. she is the best choice for cell bio.you won't regret it.

Feisty and totally transparent. no stupid teacher games. She taught the material and provided help when asked. A++ would take a class from again.

Professor Stein is a very fair and caring instructor. She wants all of her students to do well. Her exams reflect what she lectures- the book is good for clarifying more complex topics. If you want to learn cell biology thoroughly, dont take her. If you need this class but dont care about it/ wont take higher level bio, take her. Overall ok teacher.

Great professor. Adds an element of fun to a subject I was not to excited to take. Quizzes and tests are straight-forward with no surprises. The comments below are obviously from those that think all the information needed for a 300-level class can be absorbed by placing the text book under the pillow at night. She is a very cool professor, her exams and quizes are exactly from her notes. She lectures pretty fast so you have to make sure you are a good note taker. For me cell bio is extremely boring, but she makes the class fun and it flys by. I think if you study her notes really well you can get an "A." She is a good professor, I recommend her.

she make the class interesting and you can understand cellbio w/her but her exams are tricky and you really have to know the material like your name. if cell bio is your major take her, you will learn cellbio by hand. her average is ~65% so you decide. use only powerpoints.

Not easy at all, material is hard, but very doable. The thing is that her exams are very difficult, essays are good, but multiple choice are whack. Turn in your papers early, so she can return them as early as possible as she is picky on what she wants and will give you a chance to fix it on your second paper. Prepare for a thrashing.

She's a nice person and made the class fun and humorous with some of the stories from her personal life. Taking notes is pretty easy as she puts them on power point slides, which you can download from the WebCt. As long as you study the notes and listen well in class, the tests and weekly quizzes are not too difficult.

She is a decent professor, you have to keep in mind that the subject is hard regardless. most people with poor comments dont even put an effor to study. dont even bother with the book its a waste of time study her notes and understand them dont just memorize, which is what most people do so they fail. thanks dr. stein for making lectures fun.

The subject itself is hard, dont expect it to be like BIO107 this is upper division. But its definitely doable, people who complain most of the time are the bad students, study the material, most importantly understand the material and you will be fine. I did not even buy the book and i did great.

Subject is tough and requires a lot of effort, but her lectures were pretty clear. I barely used the text, just the lecture notes, which she posts online for you. Has quiz every week, STUDY for them, will help you out on the exams. Multiple choice questions on exams are very tricky. She is pretty funny, but do not get on her bad side.

If you study the notes she gives you, it is quite easy to get an A in the course. She is also very helpful if you email her with questions or ask after class. And she is nice and funny, she puts in effort to make the subject more exciting. I liked her class and got an A, no problem.

Dr. Stein is one of my favorite professors ever. She is hilarious,understanding, and FAIR. Though the tests are challenging, if you study her notes in detail and visit her office hours, you should be more than ok. Those who are easily offended need to lighten up because she truly goes the extra mile for her students and cares! I LOVED HER CLASS!

although its a hard class, dr stein makes it a lot of fun. i did not miss one day of class. she has a way of making class interesting and she's really funny it felt like she was one of us. i'd def take her again. i dont know why people say mean things about her, it's probably people upset about their grade. i didnt get an A but i loved her anyways.

Stein is a very good professor. The textbook is not required, so don't bother buying one. The test questions come right off of the powerpoints. Her questions are tricky and tough, so know the material well, also essay questions. This is an upper division course, so it will not be that easy. Just study well and don't procrastinate! Gluck!

Yes her tests are hard (it is science, what were you expecting?!) but she is fun, funny and wants people to do well. If she doesn't know something it is generally because it isn't known in the field. Hands down, best professor I've ever had. Worked my ass off, and it paid off. She sees right through know-it-alls, gives out ton of extra credit, and the tests are right off her slides. Everything I learned in this class is relevant to things I will need to know in the future. If you want to learn-- take her, but don't expect any spoonfeeding.

If you want a stand up comedian for a bio teacher, Stein is your guy - ahem, gal. She makes jokes all class long and is happy to answer questions. If you go to class and take notes, you will know what to expect on tests. She is only passionate about proteins, and skims over some other material. Overall fun and passable class.

Not really sure what the deal is with these negative comments. I thought her tests were pretty easy, she tells you ahead of time what topics are going to be essay questions. Takes a lot of studying to pass, but this is bio so what do you expect. The scope of her classes is broad. Nobody knows all the minutiae. Stop complaining and try harder.

Dr. Stein is an amazing teacher. I LOVE this woman. Bio 380 is an amazing class that will prepare you for all your other upper level bio classes. In shorter than four months you will learn so much! You want to keep up on the readings, her exams are not easy but are fair. She is kind and awesome. I love her, hope to take her with immunology!

The ratings made me think I'd regret taking her but I'm so glad I did.She is an AMAZING professor.The class is difficult but if you study regularly and ask questions, you'll get an A.This was my first A and the first time I really worked hard but I actually LEARNED and she's hilarious. Hahaha she is very blunt sometimes and some people can't handle that. Can be a little mean sometimes, but she's a great teacher and expects you to do what is asked of you. Period. And she's always willing to help. You must work hard in her class, but hard work is rewarded (and appreciated). Also very funny.

bottom line is, all the negative comments are coming from people who think this class is like a 100 level course. She is an amazing professor, her tests are definitely challenging, but they test you on**** you should have known if you had studied!...just study hard and ask any questions if you're unclear...She's also freaking HILARIOUS!!

If you cannot pass this class or think she is unfair...please change your major. She gives you everything you need to know. She doesn't make her tests a surprise. I'm always interested in class. Very lively and funny. This is a 300 level class. Grow up and start studying. There are more point on the test that can give you over a 100. She is an AMAZAZING professor. I enjoy coming to class and if you're easily offended this isn't the class for you. She may not know EVERY answer to EVERY question, but that's understandable as Cell Bio is an ever changing field and not all aspects are fully understood. Entertaining Class! I think I've learned more & retained more in this class than any of my other classes and I'm a senior. Dr. Stein makes the class very fun and entertaining. She tells you whats on the exams. The Exams are hard, and you will need to know more detail than you think. But overall, I would take another class with Dr. Stein.

Alright, bottom line, this class is AN UPPER DIVISION CLASS. That being said, I can personally say I've taken 400/500 classes 200x EASIER. A LOT of material, if you don't show up, well pretty much eff'ed for the stuff you missed. Her lectures are light and filled with humor, but her tests are NO JOKE.

I agree that she is an OK Professor. The policy at Biology department and at CSUN is they do the B curve for 300 level classes, not A curve. I hope she follows this policy and everyone is happy with this.

You absolutely do not need the book for her class - everything she tests on is in her lectures, and she makes her slides available for download. If you take good notes and study from them and the slides, you can easily pass this class. Study a little harder to comprehend the material and you will get an A. And class is VERY entertaining!!

Dr stein is a good professor, but she's not easy. she expects the students to learn and ask questions. the subject matter of BIO 380 is difficult by itself but she will do her best to answer any question. her personal style is laid back and a bit confrontational and if you have thin skin you should not take her. do the work and u will pass.

OMG! OMG! and OMG! she is the best!! I love her lectures, tests and everything about this class. I even changed my sch. for next semester just to take another Bio class with her. having her as your prof is an honor, so don't even think about it just take her!

I love Dr. Stein a lot but I had to give her a low score for clarity because when she lectures, she is ALL over the place, and it's very difficult to keep up with her. Compared to other professors, she is VERY detailed in the material she teaches. Overall, I really liked her class. Exams are not too hard. Final was simple. Would take again.

Yes Cell Bio is hard, no it's not impossible and taking Dr. Stein makes it not only fun but interesting. This Professor knows her ___ and she is passionate about it so you will be too! Absolutely great instructor. Don't need the book. Just record the lectures and listen to them over, and over, and you'll do fine. She makes the class fun so it feels less like a chore. Don't be surprised if class is interrupted by random people coming into the classroom.

She's not joking with you in the beginning of the semester when she says it's a difficult class. Take notes during class, pay attention, watch lecture capture, and always study. She's hilarious and actually relates all the topics to relevant things. TAKE HER, but just a warning, it's not an easy A, you really have to dedicate your time to studying.

Not a very hard class and she makes it very easy, the tests are super easy they are based 99% on her lectures. Very funny perso makes lots of jokes and pokes fun at people which makes class very interesting, book is not required, neither is PLF unless you are retaking. Attendence not reqd, lec cap. Definitely recommended one of the best professors.

A student who shows up to every class, makes notes, partakes in every moodle upload, watched every lecture capture again at home to recap and take more notes, and studied hours upon hours, days upon days, shouldn't NOT pass!!!

Recommend this class for Biology majors ONLY! Take someone else if you aren't a bio major. She goes in depth in cell and molec biology which is really good for bio majors and prepares you for bio 380. It was a hard class, but to do well i recommend CONNECTING all information. Biology is a puzzle, put it together and you will be fine.

I liked her, she lectures well and sometimes she makes it funny so it's not really boring. However, her tests are very difficult, so you need to study hard to do well. You need to take good notes and record lectures. I don't think I ever used the book though. Immuno is hard but doable. Good luck!

It's a tough class and a tough subject but no one knows cell bio like Dr. Stein. If you need this information for your future career, she's the one to go to. Work hard, study hard and when you pass this class you will KNOW this information.

Tests are tough but you can definitely get an A in this class and you don't have to study EVERY SINGLE day to do so. You do need to study (as with any class) but if you watch lecture captures before tests to refresh your memory and pick up on things you may have missed then you can do very well.

Dr. Stein holds a special place in my heart. She's tough and her tests are not easy. But she's hilarious and her class is fun, especially when we play kahoot it. Like any other bio class you have to study a lot and put in effort. She's the toughest professor I've ever had but I feel prepared to take other bio classes. I recommend her!

In my opinion she is a great teacher. She teaches you everything you need to know and you don't EVER have to read the book. The class is no walk in the park, but she is specific on what she wants you to know so pay attention. Review her notes from her powerpoint, there is a quiz every class. She is also funny and keeps lectures interesting.

Dr. Stein is tough, but if you are interested in the topic you will learn. Her personality can come off as off putting from time to time (something she will joke about in class), but don't take it personally. Professor Stein is probably the most funniest professor I have ever taken. She gave extra credit quizzes (which help a lot) and her tests are kinda hard if you don't study really well. I failed all the tests and she ended up giving me a C. I did extra credit so maybe that helped. She's funny and nice and helpful. I would take her again!

Very Fun yet hard and challenging teacher. I recommend her especially who are Bio majors. Very entertaining and yet you have to work and i mean WORK REALLY HARD to get a good enough grade. Shes every easy to talk to and very approachable. Come to office hours and she will help you see you are confused about and understand the material even better.

Dr. Stein has to be my favorite professor at CSUN. I have learned more in this class than I have in any other. There are challenging quizzes every day. I recommend watching and taking notes on the lecture capture the day after. Don't study last minute for the exams.

The teacher does whatever it takes to keep the class entertaining. You really have to work hard for your grade. You have to understand the concept and the functions of cells than just memorizing it. Once you understand the concept, then everything will come together. She's very approachable and friendly if you need help.

Stein is hilarious, she comes off as intimidating but she's actually a very nice person. She tries her best to make the class entertaining. Unfortunately, her exams are very difficult. You don't always know what to expect. You can't just memorize info, you have to really understand how things work. She gives two drawing questions for each exam.

This class was the hardest class I have taken so far, but she is a great professor. She really care about her students and wants everyone to succeed. You have to work really hard for your grade, but you'll learn a lot. daily quizzes, four exams that she curves, and a final.

Awesome teacher and person. Best way to study is by watching lecture capture and taking notes. Basically know 90% of what she talks about in lecture, down to the little details, literally. Tough class due to the hours of studying you will have to do, but reasonable and prepares you for the future, especially of you're going to the medical field.

ONE OF THE BEST PROFS EVER. It's a HARD class, material wise. But she is such a cool person that lectures aren't a bore. Daily quizzes can bring your grade down so study every night! The course is not hard but really need to put effort for an A. Be wary for the "flipped lectures cuz they take much more time to study than normal lecture.

This was the sixth biology class I've taken in college and it was the only biology class so far I was legitamately fearful of not getting an A in. Hard subject, a TON of stuff to memorize. Professor Stein has a kooky, fun personality though and makes in-person lectures entertaining. If Michael Scott from The Office was a woman professor..

One of my favorite professors at CSUN. She has such a big heart and she truly cares about her students. However, that doesn't mean she's going to be easy on you. You get what you work for. It's a hard class, A LOT of information to study. Her weekly quizzes force you to always be studying, which trust me is a big help when the final comes around.
