She made me think the most of any bio teacher thus far. a little disorganized but a good teacher.
VERY GOOD TEACHER.. BUT EXTREMLY HARD!!! HIGHEST GRADE in class was about 85%.....hard her for BIO 350.. HARD HARD HARD! plus i did study extremly hard
This is quite possibly the worst teacher I've had here at the UW, maybe ever. But the impossibly difficult tests (the average for all of them was around 50%), her disorganized lectures, and the fact that the book scarcely helps at all for her portion of the class all make her a terrible teacher. Take BIOL 220 another quarter. You'll be glad you did
Mara Pat is probably my favorite teacher at UW so far. She's definitely not easy, but I loved her classes. I worked my butt off, but it was worth it. Her interactive lectures helped me more than any reading did. Use the general models and find a good study group, explaining the meghanisms to your peers and is the only way to succeed in this class
TAKE THE COURSE ANOTHER QUARTER IF YOU HAVE TO; AVOID THIS TEACHER! Her exams are a joke: not only are they stupidly difficult the grading is pretty much arbitrary (you're required to answer questions with material that's not mentioned in the prompt). Also: her stupid gimmicks in teaching reflect the exams more than material itself.
Had Mary-Pat for bio 220 AND 350. Love her. She's amazing. She relates biology to everyday life and makes everything relevant. She is extremely motivated to keep students interested and learning. Her exams are very difficult but she probes and challenges you to "think like a scientist"! Why else would you be taking biology?
You either love her or you hate her. I thought she was the worst, although I did learn a lot. She wants you to think like a physiologist -- translates into thinking exactly like her. It's hard to stay motivated when she is so biased. For anyone who doesn't want to be a groupie, avoid this professor.
Possibly the worst professor ever. She is the head of the biology department...so she makes it extra hard for the students to do good in her class. If you have never had her before...don't take her...the only kids who did good in the class were the ones who had her before...
Very intensive teacher, uses ample examples in order to increase student learned. Best advice is to show up to every class and ask lots of questions, the more questions you ask the better you will do in her class.
I took the Careers for Biology seminar with her. It wasn't a graded class, just pass/fail so I can't say anything about her difficulty as an exam giver/grader, but I can say she was extremely helpful in making us aware of opportunities after graduation and how to approach getting a job after school. Definately recommend this seminar for bio majors!
The most egoistic and narsscistic professor I ever had here at UW
One of the worst teachers I've had. Took a 3 credit foundations course and turned it into 5 credit advanced physiology simply by how she taught. I learned a lot, but her grading standards are so high that unless you've had her before and know exactly what she wants it's impossible to get a good grade.
I'd say avoid her if you can, extremely egotistical and difficult to approach, with some of the most absurd tests I've ever taken.
Definitely makes you think. But her ego is a distraction, for her and the student. I learned a lot, but have never had such a visceral dislike for someone, both personally and professionally. She often treats students like her own little experiment and takes class time to proselytize about her own research interests. Not what I paid for!
MP's exams are unfortunately (rather than being an objective assessment of students knowledge of the material) an exercise imitating her own(unscientific and oversimplified)reasoning. Mandatory weekly feedback and graded "summary sheets" of lectures are the icing on the cake. On a personal level, MPW is arrogant, cold, and unreasonable: Stay Away.
Mary Pat has written several research papers on student learning. Ironically, her incorporation of unconventional teaching strategies is an utter failure. Classes end up being disorganized sessions of listening to MPs stream-of-consciousness style lectures. As stated below, her interactions with students are both unprofessional and disrespectful.
MaryPat is definitely a hard teacher, so you have to be willing to put time in. I had her for 350, 460, 462, and 463. If you're premed, I recommend taking her, I learned a lot and it has stuck with me. The way she teaches the info makes it relevant to real life! Find study groups and go to lecture. Go to office hours and ask ?'s
I've taken BIOL 350, 460, 462, 463 and 500 with MP. Her passion is making physiology accessible to students, and this shows in her lectures. While some people interpret certain things as "busy work," I've talked with her about her philosophy on education, and there is a reason for everything she does. I have a lot of respect for her as an educator.
Very difficult, but essential for understanding physiology. She's brutal & honest, but she will scare you into knowing everything and's always available for extra help. Dogmatic, but very VERY effective! Foundations (3cr) is 5 credits of work.
Recommended you don't take her if you haven't before...her teaching style is very distinct - and awesomely effective - and neophytes will have a rough time. However, she is an extremely good instructor and though very honest & very brutal, she's also quite kind.
Mixed feelings. Undoubtedly the hardest professor EVER!Aloof and progmatic. Approaches science with a closed mind. Her way or the highway!
Myopic, cold, and acidic. I do not understand how you could possibly rate MPW as a GOOD instructor. More than making her students work hard, she creates unnecessary hoops and obstacles. Her method of teaching and grading holds hope for only those who fall on her every word. Her personality is pathological, her teaching style like an evangelist. Bad
Mary Pat is awesome. She is a no BS teacher but genuinely wants her students to succeed and do well both inside and outside the classroom. Take her if you're ready to actually learn physiology. If you are looking for an easy A without putting forth effort this is not the right class. If you're looking for a great experience, absolutely take her.
what can I say? I can't believe anybody likes her teaching style or her exams... she is a mean teacher who builds up your hopes and in the last moment, she'll set them on fire with no trace...I hope you get the picture!
MPW's classes are certainly not easy. You either love her or hate her. I personally love her teaching style. I did average on the 1st test, but aced the 2nd because I learned what SHE wants as an answer. She challenged us to think analytically and not just spew out facts because doing so is not helpful in real life. There's life after college, guys
Very hard class. The average is lower than most classes, but it was also the best class i have taken. Her lectures are always interesting and her teaching style demands a lot of work from you, but you will learn a lot.
Her class was not easy. After the first midterm I think the average grade was about 2.5 or something, maybe lower. But I really loved this class, I can see how people don't like her teaching style, but I liked it. She teaches you how to learn biology in general while teaching about a specific topic. This class will teach you a lot.
Mary Pat is one of the best teachers I have ever met. You will have to work hard, but you're in college so you should. Take a class with her if you can! You will never forget what you learn in her classes.
If you ever have an opportunity to take a class from her, do. She will be one of the best professors you ever have. However, if you don't care about the learning and just about the grade, don't bother.
I got more out of this class than any other at UW. You don't even realize till later how effective her teaching methods are for learning physiology.
Really good prof if you want to prepard yourself for difficult upper level courses or grad school. ATTENDING LECTURES IS A MUST!!! I typically like watching the screencasts, and while this class is screencasted you really have to go to lecture to fully understand the material.
Excellent lecturer--terrible class organization. You won't do well on exams unless you learn to jump right through the very center of her hoops, and she even admits that you won't use her flow diagram test-answer style in any other classes besides hers. I'll be taking upper-level classes from different professors if possible...
Every review on here is true; she's a GREAT lecturer and you'll learn a ton. However, learning physiology won't translate to a good grade. You have to learn her teaching style as well. Her tests are simple, but be prepared to write answers essentially word for word as she would. Class is curved harshly (average on exams ended up being around 1.8).
She is good most of the time although I thought her class was a bit unorganized. Her class makes you think, which is good but you will probably kiss your GPA goodbye. Grading is very harsh. I'm going to stay away, but I have to say class was enjoyable but exams were just ridiculous.
Easily the most effective lecture I've attended as an undergrad. She focuses on understanding concepts over minutia. That said, her exams are quite difficult and you will need to play to her grading style if you want to escape with high marks.
Dr. Wenderoth is easily one of the most amazing professors I've had at UW. Her class is quite challenging, and it's tough to get a good grade. However, the amount that I learned in her class was astonishing and I look forward to taking more classes with her in the future! She definitely is the professor you want for Bio 350!
Best professor of all time. She's hard as hell and expects a lot, but if you take her class seriously you will learn so much. She's my all time favorite.
I never write reviews for professors, but MPW is by far one of the greatest lecturers I have ever had at UW. Her grading style is tough, but that's expected when you get to the 300-level classes. She cares that her students learn, and she's always willing to answer any questions.
One of the best classes I've taken! It is very challenging for a 3cr class but worth it if you put in the effort. Refer to the textbook for clarifications. HW includes making business cards, weekly assignments in QZ, weekly summary sheets, attending 2 seminars & a career fair. Lots of in class participation and remembering info from Gen Bio
Mary Pat is a fantastic lecturer with a true enthusiasm for physiology. Her classes are by no means easy, but I recommend them if you're truly interested in learning the course material. You'll learn a great deal and more importantly you'll remember it. Definitely the prof you'll want to have for BIOL 350.
Dr. Wenderoth is a fantastic lecturer whose teaching style allows you to retain an enormous amount of information by making connections & thinking in terms of casual chains of events. I find her classes quite easy, so if you're a good student you shouldn't necessarily be scared off by most of the reviews here.
Demanding & engaging professor. Her teaching methods are unusual but I found them to be effective. Takes a lot of effort to do well in this class but she is very clear about what she expects from you. This is a 5 credit class, don't let the 3 on the schedule fool you, & don't be a fool any try to take four other classes at the same time like I did
Professor Wenderoth is not an easy teacher, but she brings out the best in her students. She inspired me to ask questions and make connections between topics. Her class was the hardest class I have ever taken at the U, but by far my favorite. You need to work hard. I highly recommend taking any class taught by Professor Wenderoth. Don't miss out!
I learned more in her biology class than just about any other I've taken. She's wonderful at getting you to learn the concepts and is incredibly helpful at guiding you through the answers. Her lessons are a little scatter brained but extremely informative. Her tests are RIDICULOUSLY hard and it's difficult to know what answers she wants.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had. She is so narcissistic and has absolutely zero compassion for her students. I had no idea a teacher could be this horrible and I regret every day that I didn't take 350 with a different teacher.
This is one of the hardest classes I have taken at UW, but it was manageable. (Take the entire long series of biochem and you will know what hard classes are really like.) Find a good study group and get as many practice tests as you can. She's grumpy right after class so don't ask her questions. She seems mean, but cares about her students A LOT.
WENDEROTH IS AWESOME. EVEN THOUGH I HAD HER FOR BIOL350, I TOTALLY CAN USE WHAT I LEARNED IN MY ADVANCED PHYSIOLOGY CLASSES. SHE WAS HARD AF BUT IT WAS BENEFICIAL IN THE END.
Mary Pat is the queen of animal physiology. She is a true genius on the topic. Her lectures are very informative and sometimes funny. She spends a little too much time cold calling and not enough time lecturing though. Her tests are extremely hard. She makes sure you know the material inside and out, but be prepared for a whole lot of studying.
Professor Wenderoth is a physiology genius. She grades hard and expects you to spend hours nightly studying for her class and only accepts precise A's. She spends a lot of time cold calling people too. Unfortunately I had to drop because I spent a lot of time in the hospital and couldn't recover my grade. So I have to take her again next quarter.
Wenderoth is by far the best teacher I've had at UW. She knows so much about physiology and does a good job of relaying her knowledge. Go to office hours... seriously. They are like another mini lecture, and it clarifies a LOT of things. She cares about the material, and the students, and is pretty funny.
Total boss. She's wicked smart and really knows what she's talking about. She expects students to be actively involved in her class. If you're shy or don't like speaking during class- don't take this class. She randomly calls on people, but I think it adds to the experience. I loved this class and learned so much--but the tests are VERY difficult.
A lot of students will criticize her for being too hard on tests, but the matter of the fact is that she GIVES YOU all the tools you need to succeed in her class. Test averages are low, but it's all about deciphering the question and applying the right concepts. Great professor, learned a lot.
I got really high grades in bio 180 and 200 and am now about to fail bio 220. The answers that she demanded for test questions were unreasonable. I would recommend not taking this class with her if you would like to not have a low gpa and be smothered with information.
Not an easy class- I worked harder here than I ever did in 180 and 200, but I still got a 4.0 grade estimate from her half of the class. If you can survive Wenderoth, you can survive any bio class at the UW though. She's tough but you learn so much in this class and she's a great lecturer. Would recommend taking her!
Wenderoth is the hardest grader I have had at UW, her BIO 220 class was one of the hardest classes I've taken. However, I still got a 4.0, which is the best I have done for a UW science intro class. Her grading scale sucks, 50% of the highest score is set at 0.7, but she is very smart and there is a lot of extra help available,GO TO OFFICE HOURS.
Awesome lectures! The material is very interesting and she calls on people randomly, so you are basically forced to pay attention. Hard tests though. Include every detail of material you've ever learned!
She is my least favorite professor I have ever had, I love biology and somehow she has made me question if I want to major in biology. She does not go by the book, spends way to much time having us discuss questions and not enough time teaching. The worst part is her grading makes no sense sometimes and gives points for completely random things.
Great educator, TERRIBLE EXAM WRITER. Exams have incredibly specific answers to arguably vague questions. Really hard to tell if your answer is sufficient even if you are talking about the right concepts. Points are given for very specific mechanisms that if you miss you fail and if you go into enough detail throughout you won't finish the exam.
Took her class a few quarters ago. Still stands out to me as the worst prof I've ever had. Abrasive personality, confusing tests, really unfair grading. I'm usually a high achiever, but not in this class. Some people will like and respect the abuse and aggressive participation requirement. I think it's inane.
All you need to do is learn how to write flow diagrams and BOOM, A+. She gives you ALL the information you need to know (flow diagrams). Shortens the amount you need to write on an exam b/c you don't need to write paragraphs just flow diagrams. She's an amazing teacher and you will DEFINITELY learn a crap ton from her. Very approachable+supportive
Immensely knowledgable about physiology. If you are willing to put in the time and effort you will learn so much from her! Going to class is a must; she expects you to work through problems and discuss with your peers rather than just lecturing at you, watching the videos isn't enough. Exams are tough and take some getting used to. Would take again
She is by far the best teacher @UW. However, she will kick you, cut you, make you bleed, and make you cry mercy. Lectures leave you feeling beat-up, and after exams even worse. Your GPA will dip, BUT - you will UNDERSTAND and remember EVERYTHING she teaches you. Forces you to think/approach problems like a medical professional. Not for the lazy!
I would say that she is a very cool professor. She is strict and looks not friendly, but she is just helping you in a straightforward way. If you don't like her teaching style, she will be your nightmare. If you love her like I do, you will be a big fan of her and want to take all her classes lol.
Doing the homework is key and if you follow the rubric you should be fine. Lectures are unorganized and she expects you to do a lot of out of class work to fill in the holes in the material. But if you do that and put a lot of time into the class you can get a good grade. I put in a TON of work and did well but this is a lot of work for 3 credits.
Hardest prof I've ever had - but changed the way I think about science and life in general ---highly recommend others to challenge themselves by taking this class
Amazing teacher with an incredible teaching method. You will learn and remember more than you ever have in other classes. But you will have to work hard and attend every single class so as to not miss anything that could be on the extremely difficult exams.
Feels like a 6 credit class, however, Mary Pat does this for your own good. I have never had such an amazing lecturer. Everything (even though it's a lot) is done for your benefit. She pushes you in the best way and helps you realize your potential. Get ready to work hard and prove to her and yourself that you can do it!! She's truly amazing
Dr. Wenderoth is the hardest teacher I've ever taken and expects way more work than a normal 3 credit class. That said, I learned more from her than any other teacher. She truly cares about your learning and I wish I had the opportunity to take her again. She won't be your easy A class, but you will learn more than most 5 credit classes.
She will challenge and push your critical thinking and ability to learn in big ways. The most challenging yet rewarding class I have ever participated in. She is a must have instructor who will leave you feeling confident in your capabilities as a student if you work with her process. Don't be afraid to give a wrong answer because it'll happen.
Biol 350 was the worst class I have taken at UW. M Pat is a really tough grader, easily she has been the toughest professor I have ever experienced. This class made my quarter the worst quarter I have had at UW. She made me question if I was good enough, passionate enough, or smart enough to go into biology. 0/10, not worth.
MP's teaching style is refreshing. The pace/order of her lectures teaches you to view physiology as a whole, which is an important way to understand her material esp when it comes to exams. Lots of work - not tedious tho. She seems intimidating at first - but you'll soon realize how approachable she is & how much she cares about her students
Love Mary-Pat! She can be intense and grade harshly for a 3-credit class but she does it because she wants you to understand the material rather than simply memorize it. Lectures are so informative and she makes the material easy to understand. Definitely a heavy workload for a 3-credit class but my favorite biology professor!
Dr. Wenderoth is the best professor ever at UW. She cares for her students knowledge and their success. You would sometimes get tired of her "why?" question, but it never is useless. She wants you to know everything and why each thing happens. She is a tough and detailed grader. Pay attention to what she keeps repeating in lecture, you'll be fine.
What a class! Being very rawfully honest here. If you are not prepared to be a physiologist, you are going to have a rough time. She is knowledgeable and gives tough love. Everything we did (even the quiz section paper summaries) came back in the higher 400 level classes. She teaches you how to market yourself/diplomacy, which is what i needed.
Professor Wenderoth was the best lecturer I have had at UW. This is by no means an easy class. She can be intimidating at first but just because her teaching style is different. She creates a comfortable environment where you won't be afraid to be wrong, it's encouraged to try and think comprehensively. Never had a professor care so much.
Worst professor I have ever had at UW hands down. Very old school, not the good kind either, the kind that refuses to use powerpoint and instead just writes on the board with an expo marker and doesn't take the effort to actually focus panopto on what she's writing on the board so panopto is basically useless. Grading is done carelessly, avoid!
Mary Pat is one tough cookie. She demands respect and expects you to be on top of it and paying attention, but gives you every opportunity to rise to the challenge. Exams are time-constrained and difficult, but she teaches every step of the way and if you pay attention in class, that's all you need. Textbook optional and won't necessarily help.
I loved this class. In order to succeed in this class you have to work hard and put in lots of extra effort. The class should be worth 3 credits and not 5. However, I learned and retained more info in this class than I did in all of the intro biology series. MPW truly cares about her students. Highly recommend since it helps in 400 level courses.
MPW is the best professor I've had at UW. She really knows how to teach, and teaches you how to learn properly. That being said, this class isn't easy. Workload is around a 5 credit class even though it's only 3. Exams can be a time crunch, but everything you need to know is taught in lecture. Really cares about student learning.
Hardest class I've taken in my 2 years here. Wenderoth gives extremely vague instructions that students were still confused about things at the end of the quarter. Exams were so randomly hard but at least the content was really interesting. She's super knowledgeable but I wouldn't recommend it.
Dr. Wenderoth is definitely one of the best professors at UW. She goes really in depth for lectures and expects a lot for tests, but gives the material and support to do well. Study groups are key, as well as going to office hours/review sessions. Working hard on the summary sheets and notecards pays off. Take advantage of the extra credit.
It's an "intro to physiology"?? Sure.. She only went over two systems--GI system and then endocrine system the last two weeks before finals... I'm bitter about what a waste of my tuition money this went towards, let alone how difficult and work heavy this 3 credit class is. Ridiculously detailed down to "how does the Cl move across this and that",
Dr. Wenderoth has extremely high expectations and takes things far too seriously. Kind of ridiculous the amount of work we had to put in for a 3-credit class. She is very cut-throat and no nonsense, but at the same time is unclear on instructions and sometimes her teaching style just feels like a bunch of random tangents that we have to remember.
She is very strict and does not have room for empathy. Her exams need a level of specificity thats very difficult to reach. Her other assignments have very vague instructions but are graded very strictly. she has very good lectures but its hard to get anything above a 50%
I wish I could leave a better review, because I really respect Dr. Wenderoth and I think she's an excellent lecturer. But this class was far, far too much work for a 3-credit class-- I had to prioritize it over my normal 5 credit classes. Her TAs were extremely unhelpful, and unorganized/harsh grading made this class tougher than it needed to be.
MPW is a very knowledgeable and respected professor. She is the best bio prof I have ever had. Her class is engaging and her teaching is effective. She prepares you with the proper tool for future studies and she teaches you how to think instead of just the material. The class overall is heavy loaded though, expect to spend extra time and effort.
Despite the hate toward Professor Wenderoth, she is a fantastic teacher. She is engaged, she cares deeply, and she puts effort into teaching and actually wants you to learn. You MUST attend lectures, but everything you are expected to know on the exams comes from her. Exams are extremely tough, you need to put continuous work in outside of class.
This professor may very well be one of, if not the best professor at the University of Washington. The most engaging, interesting, and well thought-out lectures I've ever had at UW. Exams are hard as nails though. Be ready to fully understand complex systems and dive as deep as possible into each one.
Dr. Wenderoth is one the best lecturers, but worst graders. Her lectures were fun and insightful. But, her grading was a linear scale, where 4.0 = highest score, 0.7 = highest/2. The 1st exam's average was a 0.7. I was also a DRS student, and had conversed with her directly about it, but I had none of the bad experiences another person mentioned.
I only got a 3.4 in her class but I never worked harder for a 3.4 in my life. Amazing professor who cares about her students success. All the bad ratings are from students who clearly did not put in the work and are blaming the professor for their failure to handle the workload that comes with an upper division stem class.
Dr. Wenderoth is the most dedicated and hardworking professor I have had the honor of being taught by. She has truly mastered the art of teaching. I came into her class last year in BIOL 350, the first exam and nearly failed. I ended up changing my study habits and almost doubling my score on her next exam. Best teacher i have ever had.
