Hard as a tack, and she doesn't take bull****, but you learn a lot

Great professor. Can't wait to take other classes with her.
Awesome and highly respectable Prof. Charismatic, witty, and extremely knowledgeable. Gives awesome lectures - learned a ton.
Great teacher. You can tell she loves what she does.
She has a reputation as one of the best anthropologists in North America, prived this to be true. Extremely knowledgable about primates and very well organized.
Awesome prof!
very knowledgable prof, gives good lectures, tests are very fair, grading works in students favor, really good course to take
Dr Pavelka is a great professor.
She is an awesome teacher!
Pavelka is entertaining and inspiring. I love her class and I love how it is a challenge, but its still possible to get an A! I will definitly take more classes with her!
she's the best prof I've ever had! Absolutely hilarious, fair tests, quick marking, loved the Bush baby!
this is one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. Dr. Pavelka makes primates enthralling, she is very intelligent and respectful of student opinions.
I find it funny that everyone is giving her such a good rating. Could it be that she begged us in class to come here and upgrade her to a smiley face? Could anyone be that arrogant? Yes.
I would just like to point out that I did not rate Dr. Pavelka because she asked us to upgrade her to a smiley face. She is one of the best profs I've had at UofC and it is for this fact only that I gave her a good rating - its definately deserved
-she's hot...
I'm sure the fact she mentioned this page in class had nothing to do with everyone's ranking. It must be pure coincidence there are so many good ratings on the same day she begged us in class. Give me a break.
I disagree with the person who said that we all ranked her high because she asked us to. I ranked her due to her ability to teach. I respect your rating, now respect others and don't put others down just because you are not doing well in the course.
Dr.Pavelka is one of the best profs at the university. One who really cares about her job. Don't degrade your fellow peers because they obviously liked her enough to take the effort to respond.
my rating has nothing to do with her mentioning this page in class. She is in my top 3 teachers at the UofC easily,i think she's awesome.Study her notes, read the textbook and you WILL pull off a really good grade. Why would ppl rate her good if she wasn't&
Amazing Prof. Witty and extremely knowledgeable about her field. Puts a ton of effort into her lectures. Tests are fair - if you study you do well - no surprises. One of the best profs I've had. Highly respectable.
She is very odd, she certainly enjoys her little jokes. Her cut-offs are high, but easy to get
fairly decent class
I took a class from her about 5 years ago and it was really difficult...my worst mark. It was fairly interesting though.
One of the worst, most self absorbed teachers ever. Shows four movies during the year and doesn't even show up to watch them herself! That's setting a great example. Easy tests, but I wouldn't recommend her to anyone.
After 3 attempts to find her during her 1 HOUR PER WEEK ONLY! office hours, she was NOT THERE. It does not seem she cares. Tests hard & cutoffs higher than dept. norms. Mass memorization ONLY of lectured materials + book (not followed)
Excellent prof!
Awesome
worst teacher i've ever had. so self absorbed in herself that she actually reads these ratings! and then asks her class to rate her well here! get over yourself and put some effort into teaching!
if you study for these tests it's so easy. She's enthusiastic and sarcastic. Enjoyable class.
SELF ABSORBED
She seems like she cares but she doesn't!
She's an awsome teacher! People who thinks she's self absorbed obviously take her too seriously. Sh'e only kidding! but i learn SOOO much in her class.
She's great. Intelligient and current. An active researcher and not just a lecturer. She expects you to work and to know the subject matter, but is very specific about what to study.
I loved her classes. Her lectures were interesting and she made the course material fun to learn. I also really enjoyed her sense of humour. I only wish I had taken some advanced courses with her, but Anth wasn't my major.
Dr. Pavelka's classes are so much fun! I also had her for Anth 435, which was great because we were able to have awesome classroom discussions! Highly recommended, interesting and fun material!
Awesome prof. A little ridgid around the edges, but man does she know her stuff
Her class room expectations are very strict, which is great in a theatre with 300 students. DO NOT get caught talking during a lecture (she has the evilest of evil eyes)!
What a great prof. Her class is fun, she's really easy to listen too, and very fair. Not at all self-absorbed, and if she does ask you to rate her here, maybe it's just cause she likes the feedback. After this class, I'm considering changing my major. I would definitley take another course by her.
Read the text book in her class, if you dont you'll get burnt during her exams. Also if you HATE Powerpoints, dont take her class. Nothing orginial, just powerpoint after powerpoint. I could teach this course if I reviewed the powerpoints before class!
Awesome teacher. Lectures were funny, posts her notes so you can make up what you missed, short answer exams aren't easy, but extremely fair. If you study your stuff, you'll do just fine.
oh my god - get over yourself. self absorbed dosen't go far enough.
*very detailed class*...you cannot get by without studying--period. very detailed test questions--goal of class is memorization and regurgitation (she even stated it herself)...if you cannot devote several hours to this class--take something else. good lectures--straightforward about important information and lots of videos
There is alot to memorise, tests are not overly difficult. Actually fairly easy to do well in the class.
Tests are easy if you understand what she wants. Study anything that has multiple points...ie, 1)2)3) or a)b)c) and definitions. All the videos broke up the class nicely. I took this as a 2 1/2 hr lecture and wasn't bored at all. Great prof!
lots of info, but be prepared to do some extensive work/studying... anything is game.
This course was great! If you study, you can do awesome, if not, you shouldn't be in school anyways! Would recommend Dr. Pavelka to anyone. Very helpful if you approach her.
Bad class. It does not test your knowledge, it tests how well you can regurgitate the exact words she says. Beware: definitions of terms that are correct in other classes are ofter incorrect or only partially right here. She gets grad students to mark tests who mark like robots: no interpretation. Take advantage of the test re-evaluations.
Dr Pavelka is great. She is clear and concise, and is willing to help out if you approach her. Keeps class interesting, and the videos break the class up nicely. Tests are fair-and she tells you where she's getting all the information from for every question before hand...study and you'll do great!
Extremely interesting class. She is very clear and explains things very well. You need to go to class. The tests aren't very hard but you need to memorize the slides she uses becuase she likes regurgitation. There is a lot of reading and memorizing but the tests don't ask for ridiculous specifics. Great and helpful videos! Tests back same week
Pavellka is a great prof! She is funny and class moves at a great pace. Yes, you need to work for an A in her class, and that means reading the text. She is very clear on what tests will be on, and gives LOTS of hints to help you. The tests are predicatable if you go to class and read. Extremly nice, and goes out of her way to help you.
unprofessional,favors some students
This class was interesting, she keeps a great pace and is very clear on what she expects you to know on the exam both from lecture AND text. You must: go to most/all lectures, read the book from start to end, and memorize a lot, do her practice exams or q's and pay attention to vids!!! If you do this you will get an A but you do need to work for it.
Great Prof! The class was really interesting, she is very organized and provides you with all the info needed to do well in course. Tests are difficult but fair. Study her textbook notes along with the powerpoints and you will do great!
Tests are a pain in the butt. It is pure memorizing, word for word, and then even still you may not get marked right. There must have been over 30 people who appealled their grade for the second midterm. She makes you write a full reason why you deserve a mark on each question, then tries her best to take marks away from you and not add them.
I hated this class so much. bad prof. exams were based solely on memorization and spelling everything correctly. i came out of the class with the worst grade of my undergraduate degree and learned nothing
Strict marker on exams, very picky on terms and spelling, but clear in expectations, attend all classes, watch all videos, exams require complete memorization, follow study guide exactly to memorize what she tells you to pay attn to in textbook and u will ace the class, makes primatology interesting
Great prof, good sense of humor, and VERY clear about what is expected. You need to work pretty hard to get an A, but for those who said they didn't learn anything ... that's ridiculous! I recommend taking Anth 201 (Intro to Physical Anthropology) as it sets you up for the quantity of material that you're expected to know.
Difficult tests, but she is extremely clear with what she expects. She is the BEST lecturer I have had at the U of C. No wonder she is the department head! She keeps your attention! But keep in mind, all lectures and all the textbook are game for the tests, so be prepared! If you work your butt off, there is no reason you can't do well! Great prof
The worst grade of my entire degree. Her style of "learning" is purely based on memorization. If that's not your best method of learning, then avoid her classes at all costs. I'm going to try to appeal my marks for the first time ever.
This was my favorite class! Yeah if you don't put the work in it will show on your grade. She tells you exactly what to study and what she wants for the exams. This class is a lot of reading, but well worth the effort. She is a fair grader, and you have the option of having your exam re-graded if you think mark were docked unfairly.
She's clear about her expectations and never throws a surprise at you when testing. But her expectations are high. She tests out of the textbook. She's very organized, very helpful and very generous with her online notes. If you've got time to read the whole book carefully while writing papers and finals, I definitely recommend her.
Pavelka was an incredible prof- probably the best I've had yet. Her tests were extremely fair, the textbook notes were enough to study from (didn't need to read the whole text), and she made the material very interesting. She is approachable and cheerful, and overall an amazing prof. I hope I get the chance to take another one of her classes
Good teacher.
She's "Just okay". Her testing borders on ridiculous (memorize, regurgitate, forget. Repeat until nauseous.) Clear and knowledgeable, though.
Excellent Professor. But the amount of information she expects you to know is a little ridiculous. The class is interesting and she knows her stuff. Exams used to be multiple choice but has turned into written response. You'll do fine if you work hard for it.
A vivacious cougar waiting to pounce, but can not get herself out of her self imposed shell to hob-nob with those who are not masters level or above - pity...
Great prof. There was a ton of readings for this class, but she was great at letting you know exactly what she expected you to know. Tests were hard, but very fair. Great sense of humour. Attendance is a must-discussions really help to clarify certain things and are usually incorporated into exams. Overall a fabulous class!
best prof ever! has high demands for students but they're realistic. she pushes you to succeed. if you go to class and have good study habits you'll do fine. not a class that you can **** your way through though. for those who really want to learn, not just who want credits. good lecturerer, entertaining and very friendly and approachable.
H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E!! Too many expectations for an option course. AVOID!
Definitely knows what she's talking about. Lays out exactly what she expects from students before exams and puts a lot of work into giving students extra resources to help them succeed. Heavy course though, not really an option course.
She's a good prof, but her expectations are absolutely ridiculous. Almost everything in the textbook was testable, and not to mention you would not get marks if your words were not exactly like hers. Her TA's marked like robots. Not an easy class; she's very intimidating .
The first day of classes she tells students she makes it easy for them to get an A; not exactly sure how. Her expectations are beyond unreasonable in the amount of things you need to memorize verbatim and although she may be funny and an exciting prof, I wouldn't take another class with her again. Too much stress, not enough gain.
Majority of the course is strictly memorization.
She is the hardest prof i have ever had! please avoid, its not worth an option class. tests based solely on memorization, so be ready to know word for word. she marks like a robot, and make sure you know textbook and ppt slides inside out. everything is fair game. interesting course but not worth the stress. if taking 5 classes, AVOID.
WOW! This woman loves Primates! In a good way! A very good professor! ...but I assumed that this class would be relatively easy... Unfortunately it was anything but!! she expects very specific answers on tests and it requires extensive memorization!
Great Proff :) She is very helpful and enthusiastic about the topic of Primates. I would highly recommend taking this class if you are interested in Primatology or even Zoology. Compared to Science courses this one is a breeze. Just make sure to do the sample questions and read the textbook and you are golden! Great class!
This course will pull your GPA down, just as it did mine. This is my last semester of University, and this class definitely did more harm than good. Expectations are WAY too high in this class. 300+ pg textbook is tested, as well as lecture notes, and video commentary. I am a science student, and i'd rather do physics over again than this class.
Pavelka is a fantastic professor. She is enthusiastic, hilarious, and an overall great speaker. On top of that, the material is extremely interesting! However, there is a LOT of memorizing involved in this class so while it is an enjoyable option, it is far from an "easy A".
She has been a prof for far too long and no longer cares about teaching. Just her own objectives and a pay check. Very clear but strays off topic far to often. I learned almost nothing more than I did in anth 201, and did not do very well mostly from her robot marking tactics.
Despite her rep for being a tough prof, she is by far the best prof I've had at u of c. She not only gave students great practice tests/answers (which was VERY similar style to her tests) she told you what was going to be on the test during lecture. She expects people to work hard in her class, but I learnt SO much from her. Excellent prof!
Thought it would be an easy A, but it wasn't! She's pretty tough and expects perfect written answers. She is extremely passionate about monkeys and does try to help you to be well prepared for her exams
Was talked into taking this as a GPA booster and had to withdraw at risk of ruining my high GPA! Final worth 50% and all tests are long answer. Prepare to spend A LOT of time memorizing and adhering to her strict definitions of terms and concepts. As a fourth year 'A' student I was overwhelmed by this course.
Dr. Pavelka is a fantastic professor. She is very clear, and she provides excellent slideshows to go along with what she's talking about. It's very easy to do well on her tests, as she explicitly states what concepts are testable, provides study guides, gives detailed textbook notes, and provides transcriptions of movie narrations. Recommended!
Very tough class to do well in. If I were you I would stay away from this class. She may be enjoyable to listen to and the class is interesting, but her exams are set up for you to do poorly. If you want an average booster or to even maintain a decent gpa do not take this course... Trust me
Amazing professor! Always willing to help whether it is about the class or simply school advice. Class is always interesting. She is clear about what you need to know about the tests. And she is simply an amazing professor. I have learned so much from her. All you have to do is actually put effort into the class and you are guaranteed to get an a.
EXCELLENT PROF. If you do the work and read the readings, you will get an A. Got 100% on both the midterm and the final by doing what she said. She also give really good hints about what is on tests, and everything is marked VERY fairly. RECOMMENDED.
This course requires A LOT of memorization so if you're one of those people, then this is a course for you. She shows a huge passion on what she teaches and explains her slides very well in detail so you get the most out of the lecture. Absolutely cannot skip as things she say and discuss only in lectures WILL appear on the test. Recommended prof!
For an option class it was a fair amount of reading, but was always worth it because if prepared the exams were really easy and straight forward. She does not try and trick you at all
Exams are marked without much rhyme or reason, there is not a whole lot of criteria that makes it obvious what you need to know or do to get an A. Exams are 2 long answer questions with barely enough time for them. As well you have to write an essay with 3 other people (for some reason), which is much more difficult then doing it your self.
Hands down one of the worst and most disorganized professors at the U of C. Took this class with a few friends and each test was marked differently. She is extremely rude to students, allows her personal beliefs to get into lectures (feminist), and expects way more than a non-major course should involve. Avoid this professor if you can!
She focuses too much on memorization and less on actual student learning. She also gives written tests to 300+ without spending the time to read the answers and grade appropriately. She is somewhat un-approachable and I think she is scared for people to succeed as that would be competition to her in the long run.
Worst class I've taken at U of C!!
Probably the best prof I have ever had! Her lectures are super entertaining (although she has an aversion to laptops so bring a pen). She gives out lots of textbook notes, lecture notes, and sample questions for exams and gives hints about questions in class but lots of memorization so be prepared. Would DEFINITELY take another class with her.
Hands down, one of my favourite profs at U of C. Notes are extremely clear and well layed out. She is interesting to listen to, and I found her easy to approach. Tests are written like a biology exam, so students outside of the sciences seemed to struggle. A developed ability to memorize information will take you far. Fascinating course content.
She is a fantastic lecturer, the lectures are super interesting to listen to. Notes are clear and helpful, but the heavy dependence on the textbook material threw me off at times during the exam. Sometimes would point out the "important" stuff to memorize during the lecture, which did not appear on the exams at all. Not a gpa booster
Fantastic. Dr Pavelka gives you every resource you could possibly need. She tells you what to do to get an A, and if you do it, you'll get one! Yes there is a lot of reading, I really didn't enjoy the text. But get over it, there is no such thing as an "easy A".
After having a great experience with her in 311 I decided to take 435. Do not take 435. Group essay assignment SUCKED, how do you write an essay as a group? midterm and finals sucked even more- they were essay format with really no clear guidelines on what to cover. although I really enjoy Dr. Pavelka, this is the worst option class I've taken.
Dr. Pavelka was an amazing lecturer. She taught the first half of the course and I wish that she had taught the second half too. Her notes were always posted before class and were clear and concise. There is a ton of memorization required to do well in the class, but Dr. Pavelka made it seem worth it. I would definitely take another class with her!
Dr. Pavelka was a great prof. She doesn't allow electronic note taking, but for understandable reasons. She makes it very clear what you have to know, but be prepared to memorize till your brain hurts. If you don't like memorization, don't take the class. She always posts notes online, and exams are the notes regurgitated - not and easy A though
Dr. Pavelka is passionate, however she needs to realize that the majority of the class are not Anthro majors. Honestly, the amount of memorization expected for the class was completely unreasonable for a 200 level course, considering we are basically learning a new language (taxonomy). NOT a GPA booster
Dr. Pavelka is brilliant, engaging and fun to listen to. She keeps class interesting by telling stories and showing videos, and her tests are not difficult if you study.
I have never enjoyed a class more! I took this class with low expectations and I was more surprised. She is very enthusiastic and teaches in a way that students will remember. There is a lot of content and textbook reading is required, however the content is REALLY enjoyable and super fascinating. I will absolutely be taking more classes with her!
Excellent prof, very clear in terms of how she explains the course. Lot of memorization but not really overwhelming , just go to class and take good notes, it worked for me.
The best professor i have had so far! So helpful and the tests are not there to trick you.
Fantastic prof. She's very knowledgeable in her field and very willing to help/clarify anything. She doesn't allow phones or taking notes on laptops in class. Tests are all long answer and you need to know your stuff or you will fail. If you put the work in getting an A is definitely possible but its still a 300 level course. great experience !!
Made the mistake of taking this as my senior level option. Tests are all long answer written, and are marked incredibly hard (spelling counts on all of the exams). Final is cumulative and covers all of her lectures and 12 chapters of the textbook (which some material doesn't overlap from lecture). Not worth the time/effort for just an option.
she is very helpful if you approach her and show that you care for your success in her class. clear cut instructions and not a very easy course if you take with her.
Amazing professor. Interesting course content. Tells you exactly what to focus on in the textbook and creates clear and organized lecture notes. Passionate about the course material. Really friendly and fun professor. Would 100% take another course that she's teaching.
She has great lectures and really makes you interested in the material. Not an easy class so work stay on top of it.
the course was tough but she knew what she was talking about
Amazing! Fun material to learn about, and she made it even better! The textbook was "required" but I only read it for part of the course and still received a good grade! She posts her notes beforehand, and tells you exactly what you need to know for the tests. Attending lectures isn't too important, but I would've never missed lectures with her!
She knows what she's talking about and she's a good lecturer. But... Way too much material for the tests. If you want to learn, then this class is pretty interesting, but, if your taking it as a GPA booster, probably not the best choice. If your taking hard courses and this as an option, then you shouldn't take it. Unless your a genius...
Great prof! She is very passionate about what she speaks about and gives you clear ideas before hand what will be on the test. Go to lectures because she thoroughly explains all topics! Some things that are not on her powerpoint are tested so read the chapters before tests (bolded terms mostly) Overall great prof and great class to take!
do not do not do NOT skip this class. the powerpoints definitely don't have nearly as much information on them as Pavelka gives out or tests you on.
Pavelka was a good prof, but the tests were difficult. Her powerpoints were very thorough, and outlined everything you needed to know for quizzes and exams. She was engaging, and was eager to answer any questions.
Dr. Pavelka provides great fill-in notes online before classes. The information required to know for tests is clear. She's very effective at explaining the material. The notes do need to be supplemented with her required textbook readings if you want to do well on the exams though, as lots of questions asked about material only covered in the book.
One of the best classes I have ever taken! She doesn't allow laptops so be prepared to write. She puts all of the power points online before class and her lectures are so interesting and easy to follow. She makes jokes and comparisons to what she has learned which makes things so much easier to remember.
Huge sleeper
Dr. Pavelka is one of the best profs Ive had. Her exams are in written format, which I really enjoy as it allows for you to think about your answers in a more organized fashion. The textbook is a requirement, however if you read her textbook summary notes you know what to look for and dont need to read the whole book. This is my favourite class!!
Dr. P is amazing, one of the best profs I've had. Has funny anecdotes that help you remember topics and both the tests are multiple choice. It is a a lot of information to understand so it will take some work to get an A but Dr Pavelka makes it enjoyable. She's very knowledgable and answers questions without being condescending. Love her!
Pavelka is a great prof. Her lectures can sometimes get dry, and if you're not interested in the subject matter you might hate your life. All tests are short answer (which isn't necessarily bad), and marked very fair. Class attendance and lots of studying is required if you want to do good. But not hard to get an A if you apply yourself
Her lectures are a blast, and her tests are straight memorization which is super easy. Always re submit your text for marking she always digs up more marks for you. Super interesting and relatable prof.
She is a very brilliant woman and I really enjoyed her class. Her lectures are packed with useful information, and she has a great passion for the material. I enjoyed the class, but the downside for me was that the exams were needlessly hard and unforgiving. No amount of studying seemed to enable me to do well.
Awesome!!! Loved her, loved the class. So interesting, you really can't go wrong. She makes very clear what will be on the tests by giving lots of hints. You watch lots of movies that are actually super interesting and fun. If you pay attention and are good at memorizing you can easily get an A. Have nothing bad to say, great great prof!!
Lectures were okay, didn't really get her point across. Tests were hard, lots of memorization.
Awesome prof. Her lectures were very engaging and she is clearly passionate about her field. Attend lecture, take good notes, and read the textbook. There was a bit of memorization, but I didn't find it too difficult - the material is so interesting!
Decent prof. Her lectures are interesting, but nothing too special. She sometimes drops hints for exam questions during lectures so I would recommend going, but attendance definitely isn't necessary. The tests are fair. I read over her slides for a few hours before each of the exams and ended up with a B+. Good GPA booster
Great prof. So much memorization. She doesn't allow laptops. Sometimes her lectures can get a bit dry. Her exams are so easy if you study for them well.
Dr. Pavelka knows exactly what she is talking about. She delivers the material in a very straightforward manner, and in one that is quite easy to learn. You do have to put the hours in studying, as the stuff is difficult to wrap your head around given its quantity, but if you work for it, the criteria for succeeding is more than clear.
I love Dr. Pavelka! She is awesome in lecture, very entertaining with her own research stories and makes it so the class just zooms by! The content in this class is super interesting, but do not go in thinking it's an easy A, you need to study and you NEED to pay attention in class. Looking forward to taking more classes with her :)
Dr. Pavelka is so funny! I've always been interested in anthropology but after taking this class, I decided to add it as a combined degree. She's very inspiring, worldly, and VERY knowledgeable. She's also very understanding, easy to approach, and just nice overall. I loved this class (+ we watched lots of interesting videos).
A lot of reading and memorization, can be tough if you didnt take bio. She is nice and can be hilarious, but course material can be dry at times.
Pavelka is one my favourite teachers. Go introduce yourself to her and see her in her office hours (ask about new world monkeys) and she'll actively seek you out in class and be sure to help you if you're struggling. Don't be afraid to ask questions, or joke around with her.
Super funny prof! Lectures are long, and boring but she tries her best to keep it light. This class requires tons of reading and memorization. I wouldn't recommend this class as an option. Not an easy A.
Best prof I've had, gives great notes in lecture( write everything down) and if u want a A+ you got read the textbook, other wise A- is achievable without.
One of the best profs I've had. The course is all memorization (there is A LOT and I mean A LOT of information to memorize to do well), thinks of the class as a whole (doesn't let a single individual have an advantage over the class), very passionate and clear communication. You NEED the textbook. Adjusted 2nd term test because avg. was low.
*took this course in 2015 so things may have changed* but if you have the opportunity to take a course with Dr. Pavelka I would absolutely recommend it, one of my favourite profs at u of c. Teaches enthusiastically, cares about her field, and is hilarious. Absolutely prepares you for the exams and is a great introduction to Anthropology.
If you have the opportunity to take this course with Dr. Pavelka, absolutely do it. She is an excellent prof and cares about her students and her field. She teaches enthusiastically and makes jokes as often as she can (also her class averages tend to be pretty high).
If you have taken a course with Dr. Pavelka before and enjoyed it, definitely take 435. It is relevant to her current research so she has a lot to say on it and it is super interesting. The group paper wasn't that bad. She super prepares you for the tests. Midterm, paper, non-cumulative final. Sad that this is my last course with Dr. Pavelka.
I respect this woman as a professor and as a person. She is relatively strict as it pertains to her cellphone policy, but it's for the good of the students. One of the most well-versed and knowledgeable lecturers I have encountered at U of C. Extremely organized. Exams are fair but you have to work for your grade. One of the best classes I've done.
Amazing prof. Very old style, but only to benefit and be fair to the students. Exams were entirely written, but extremely straight forward and fair. Heavy readings.
I loved Dr. Pavelka, amazing lectures and she really cares about her students. Tests are all short answer but if you study enough they are pretty easy. Highly recommend this course!
Great prof who was very enthusiastic. Glad I took this class with her as she's entertaining and enthusiastic.
Dr. Pavelka has been an amazing Professor for Biological Anthropolgy! She makes lectures fun, exciting and very educational. Definitely would recommend taking a class with her, even if anthropology is not your major. She makes it interesting. Dr. Pavelka tests on exactly what she says she will test on and is very helpful when it comes to questions.
I have mixed feelings regarding Professor Pavelka and her class. On one side, her tests were extremely harsh and unforgiving. I put massive amounts of time into studying, and still did horribly. On the other hand, she's a very thoughtful, brilliant woman. I wouldn't recommend taking her class, but she's still a good person.
Lectures were very informative but if you miss class you will probably get marks off on your final exam because she tests you on stuff she says not just what is in the powerpoints. reading the textbook is very important for understanding what was discussed in lecture.
Very tough class with lots of memorization. Dr Pavelka is knowledgable ov the course content but when asked a different question, either says "I don't know" or rambles on about something else to dodge the question. Tests are very unforgiving, and rely heavily on the textbook. Assigns a lot of videos and there are many test questions on them!
Her lectures are fun and interesting but her testing is difficult. There are only 3 tests with the final worth 50% of your grade. They are 100% written and if you dont get exactly what she wants you lose marks. She writes sarcastic comments on your exams when you get something wrong. Thinks shes being funny but all it does is decrease confidence.
Don't get me wrong she's a great prof and gives amazing lectures, but you must be able to put in the work to study for this class. IT IS NOT AN EASY A. You do need to go to class and watch the videos as it will be on the tests. She's one of the profs that doesn't allow laptops, although it is for the benefit of the students.
She is just great. Very knowledgeable and passionate. she does this bits of primates which is just hilarious. you have to work for the grades and read the book, but its super interesting. Great course. and she is just awesome like AWESOME
Professor Pevalka is very passionate about her subject and has been teaching for about 40 years! Her notes are excellent for studying, but you have to read the book as test questions can be heavily based on them. Her lectures are entertaining and she constantly drops hints about tests and highlights important areas to know. Excellent professor.
Her lectures are fun and interesting but her expectations are unrealistic. There are only three tests and the last one is 50% and you have to know everything youve learnt the entire semester. Each test is written and you must write exactly her wording otherwise you lose points. I would avoid taking this course if you are looking for option classes
Very tough exams. Need to answer word for word in her wording. All written exams. Be ready to study as hard as you can and still not do fantastic in the class.
Professor Pavelka is a really great teacher and clearly loves what she does. Her slides and lectures are really clear and very memorable when it comes to test days. The only complaint I'd really have are her stupid no electronics policy. You're not allowed to type out notes because tons of people will find it 'distracting'. lol i think not
Amazing prof! Engaging lectures and very passionate about her field. Tests are quite difficult - especially the first one where you have to memorize all primate characteristics but it's definitely do-able. You need to put in lots of work and write down everything she says. Overall a fantastic prof!
Pavelka is a great ANTH prof, and if you have an affinity for biology/biological anthropology then you will do great in this course. If not, this may not be for you. VERY lecture heavy, ANYTHING said within lectures can appear on the 2 midterms and the final. Lots of memorizing. Pavelka is engaging but can drag on sometimes.
Amazing professor. Super caring and makes it clear she will not be sabotaging marks as she wants students to do their best. Her exams are written, but everything will definitely be in your notes from lecture. GOING TO CLASS IS IMPORTANT. Remember to submit your midterm for regrading as she tries HER HARDEST to give marks back!!!
Decent prof, kinda funny, but not when it's directed at you. Didn't know much about basic biology & couldn't answer questions on this at all. DO NOT SKIP THE VIDEOS (she asks questions about this on the exam). Exams are very difficult, study A LOT.
Pavelka is one of the best profs at U of C. She genuinely cares about her students and does everything she can to help you be successful. She posted lecture notes, video narratives, and textbook notes so you can focus on the important stuff. Her lectures are clear and she explains concepts in ways you can understand. Overall, fantastic prof!
She is nice, she knows what she is talking about and loves what she is teaching. However, it was way to much work required considering I took it as an option. Class is not mandatory, watch the videos she knows a day before the exam so small details are in your head. She asks you to study too much material and the questions are stuff you didnt study
No MC on tests, makes u study ALOT and ALOT only to test us on a small fraction of what she made us study for. Sent mass emails saying to study something, only for it not to show up on the test. THIS IS NOT A GPA BOOSTER!! Unclear expectations and makes us memorize 30 slide powerpoints letter for letter and tests every little detail. Not worth it
Lectures are interesting. You have to work for your grade. Textbook readings are not mandatory but they do help clarify some topics. Should attend class as some things she says that are not in the notes are not posted. Class is not really a GPA booster. But it is not super challenging either. Overall a great professor who is very passionate.
Dr. Pavelka is awesome! She makes the course material very interesting and delivers engaging lectures. Her tests are difficult but definitely do-able. If you take notes and read the textbook (she posts textbook chapter summary notes online so you can follow those when reading the textbook) and often hints at what will be on the exam.
Here is one of the best profs you will ever have the pleasure of taking a class with at the U of C. She is extremely well educated in the subjects of which she speaks, and is engaging the whole time. Not only that, she also genuinely cares about her students success and gets to know them. Take his class if you are interested in biological anthro.
The content was very interesting but prepare to do a lot of readings. There's quite a lot of memorization like the skeleton, evolution patterns, terminology, etc. She often makes us watch videos in class in which most people just end up watching at home which is always a nice treat. It's definitely not an easy gpa booster I will say that though...
Dr. Pavelka is amazing, The class is 3 fully short answer tests but its worth it if you are interested in the subject or this class is required. One of the best professors in the Anth Department.
She is an amazing professor. Read chapters for success and you will do great. Also attend class especially if she puts up videos you will be tested on them!
Really enjoyed her as a prof. No electronics allowed unless it's a tablet as she dies not want typing to distract others. She is very straight to the point but throws in the odd jokes. Make sure you watch the videos she posts. You will be tested on the content.
Honestly loved her class. If you find primates interesting and come to class ready to learn, you'll do fine. She would give hints as to what would appear on the exams, sometimes even giving you the exact question. The tests were written and based off lecture notes and the textbook, but she provided notes that helped you focus on what to read.
I've never had a lecture fly by so fast. She's become one of my favorite profs and her passion for what she teaches in infectious. She's one of the profs that doesn't allow laptops in her class, and will call you out for it, but you can also tell she cares so much about her students. I've had friends take her class that aren't in ANTH and loved her
I took Anthropology 201 with Dr. Pavelka last year and it was easily my favourite class. Tests are multiple choice and really easy if you know your stuff. You have to memorize quite a bit but its pretty standard for university classes so it wasn't too bad. I would definitely recommend!
This class is so interesting! It's basically a more in-depth version of Anthropology 201 and Dr. Pavelka makes it so much fun! Exams are tough because they're written but she is a clear lecturer and marker so as long as you know your stuff you should be good. The textbook is kind of long and lagging but she tests on it so I recommend reading it.
RUN! The group essay literally killed my grade. I was at an A+ in the course until I got my mark for the group essay, which brought my grade down to a B. There are also a lot of scientific papers you have to read, so if you are not from a science background, run.
Dr. Pavelka is a great prof. She is very funny and passionate about her work. She can go off on tangents sometimes, but they are interesting/relevant if you're paying attention. Be aware she looks for very specific info on the exams (both written response), so use her lecture notes as strict question outlines, and def read all the papers she posts
Pavelka is seriously THE. BEST. This is my second class with her and I wish I could take more. She is so caring and the material in this course is super interesting. There is a group essay but you get lots of in class time to work on it. Then one midterm and one final - both written. 10000% would recommend. Favourite prof at UOFC.
Dr. Pavelka is the best prof! The concepts are interesting and she explains them really well, you would have to try to do bad in her class. Midterm and final both essay but she basically gives you the questions before hand and makes it very easy to do well. Just attend her lectures and take good notes.
One of the nicest professors I had throughout my years here. She has always been caring and helpful in office hours as well as when you ask her questions. The lecture was entertaining to listen to and was interesting taking this as an elective. You would still have to work hard though to get a good grade but anyone can achieve it!
Mary's lectures are very interesting and enjoyable. Easy to follow and take notes. She does ask questions from the text book on her tests. She is funny and demands the rooms attention. If you are going to class to text or talk to friends, you will not last. Her tests have a lot of questions and not much time. Know your stuff! She is wonderful!
Dr. Pavelka is the best Anthropology prof in the department. She's a fair marker, and always tries to provide feedback so you can do better the next time. She's the reason I switched into Anthropology after having 1 class with her first year. The group paper is difficult but its marked very fairly if you put in the time to talk with the TA.
She is so picky and has a lot of rules about everything. You are not allowed to use laptops and tablets, talk, BREATHE, eat, sleep, otherwise she'll call you out. I wish I dropped when I could. She's a tough grader and expects you to write paragraphs for every written question otherwise she'll mark you wrong even if you're right. NO FREEDOM
Dr. Pavelka is so passionate teaching. For someone who isn't an ANTH major, I really did enjoy taking this class as one of my options. I have a greater appreciation for anthropology thanks to her. Be prepared to read the textbook and to take notes during lectures. She offers great lecture and textbooks note making it easier to learn the material.
Dr. Pavelka is so passionate teaching. For someone who isn't an ANTH major, I really did enjoy taking this class as one of my options. I have a greater appreciation for anthropology thanks to her.
She is a caring woman but the tests are terrible. Taking this class has made me feel incompetent. I don't think I've ever studied this hard for such low grades. You are expected to learn an insane amount of material and then you show up at the exam only to find that the majority of the points you slaved away learning are not even on the midterm.
She is nice and knowledgeable about her stuff. She's probably the best anth prof in the department. Only thing is tests are quite unfair; very specific and detailed information from textbooks. Make sure you go to class and pay attention. This course is ALL MEMORIZATION, regardless of what anyone says. but its very interesting class
Dr. Pavelka's classes are super interesting. At the start of the semester, I was considering dropping the course because it seemed too memorization-heavy, but I'm glad I stuck through because it became my favourite course. Dr. Pavelka is super engaging and funny, she makes all the content really come alive which makes it easy to do well
Dr. Pavelka is easily my favourite professor at UofC. The class was tough with the group paper but as long as you follow her guidelines and stay on top of the work you'll be fine! Tests were straightforward and the class content was super fun and engaging to learn. I wish Mary taught more classes at UofC because I've taken all of them already!
An amazing professor who is very passionate about her work, would highly reccomend her to anyone wanting to take anthropology. I would reccomend going to every lecture and doing methodical review as her tests are pretty tricky.
Mary is a nice and knowledgeable prof. However, if you aren't an anthropology major i would not reccomend taking anth 311 with her. Her exams are all written so if you don't know an answer you're hooped. The exams are not difficult, but she tells you to study soo many things and provides no direction for studying, so you end up wasting a lot oftime
Reading the textbook is both helpful and necessary. You don't have to attend the lectures to get the slides but Dr. Pavelka is an amazing lecturer and makes the time fly by with useful anecdotes about her own experiences. There was only three exams making up the whole mark but the exams were very reasonable if you put in the work.
I had Dr. Pavelka for my first year and she was amazing. When I had questions, I would email her and get a response within a reasonable time. This class is all about memorizing so if your into that then I recommend this class.
Yes, I knew that the final would be cumulative. No, I did not anticipate it being THAT cumulative. Don't bother going to the last third of the lectures as apparently the material, although just as comprehensive/content rich as the first sections of the course, does not warrant many exam questions relative to the previously taught material.
Dont make the same mistake that I did and not go to class. I managed to pass because I went to some of the classes at the end and the final was worth 50%. The exams are tough.. she definitely doesnt go easy on you with the questions but if you go to class, take good notes, read the chapters, watch the videos and really study you will be fine.
Dr. Pavelka is by far the most inspirational professor I have had. She bring excitement and enthusiasm to every lecture, encouraging you to take part in the anthropological journey. Her slides are very organized and made available to students before class. However she will pull questions for the test from class discussion so come to class!!!
Dr. Pavelka is my favourite prof! Her lectures are amazing and so interesting. She shares tons of anecdotes about her time in the field. Her tests are written but not hard if you put the effort in and read the textbook.
She really knows what she is teaching. Marks comes from two midterms and a final (all MC). Just read notes, textbook and watch videos and you'll be fine. All just memorization.
She doesnt allow laptops or technology of any kind, which makes this class difficult because its so lecture heavy. Shes dry and isnt very entertaining.
Very good professor. Her lectures are great and she is a lot of fun. However, there were only three tests and no homework so it required a lot of studying and you can't make very many mistakes if you want to do well. You will definitely need the textbook as the tests pull heavily from it and not all of it is discussed in the lecture.
Dr. Pavelka is my favourite prof at U of C! Her lectures are entertaining and sometimes pretty funny - that's because she's funny! It's clear how much she cares for her students. There's a lot of memorization in this course but if you like the topic then it's a breeze. She's an incredible lecturer and genuinely makes every class fun to attend!
Great class, really easy to follow along with lectures as slides are excellent and the lectures are structured in a very straightforward way. You will need to take your own handwritten notes- she doesn't allow computers, but paces herself so that you can write things down. Don't go to class if you'll talk or be on your phone, she will call you out.
She was a great prof! Her tests are on the harder end and you have to read the textbook but it is worth it. Amazing lecturer and has the unique ability to make you feel like she's just talking to you even if in a lecture hall of 400 people.
She is great. Very funny and casual. Strict rules in class around technology, but once you get past that, she makes the subject engaging and interesting. Her tests are easy if you know the material. She heavily uses the textbook, so it is an essentiality. Overall, a very good professor.
Awesome professor. Really cares about all her students. Don't talk or go on your phone in class because she will call you out in front of 400 people. Really enjoyable class; 75 minutes goes by in no time!
Dr. Pavelka is amazing! The way she handled the switch to online courses was great. She constantly kept us updated and recorded herself giving the lecture alongside the slides. She is funny in class and really wants her students to succeed. She gives out test answers in lecture so you should definitely attend plus, plus she makes lectures enjoyable
Pavelka is an interesting lecturer and is easy to get a hold of. She has strict rules about tests and class that I find a little over the top. Her tests are generally good, but sometimes very specific. If you don't read the textbook on top of going to lectures you probably won't pass. Personally didn't enjoy her class, but she is an okay prof.
Dr. Pavelka truly cares about her students. She is knowledgeable on what she lectures, and tries to make lecture entertaining, however, she tends to go on many tangents. There is A LOT of readings outside of class. TAs are tough markers for the group essay, so if group essays (and essay midterm/final) arent your thing, dont take this class.
Pavelka is a really awesome prof who clearly cares about her students! Make sure to write down what she says in the lectures because she gives lots of good hints as to what will be on the midterm and final. She also rounded me 0.6% to an A- which was super nice of her!!
Pavelka is one of the best professors I have ever had. She is so passionate and inspiring and I would love to have her again as a professor. I love that there are no laptops or phones in class! keeps you focused.
Pavelka was a great prof, always had cool anecdotes to help understand a concept in class + the course content was really interesting and fun to learn! I wouldn't take again mainly because it's so so heavy on memorization and can be very specific on tests. Studying almost felt never-ending, 'cause you have notes, videos, then the text, and lecture
Very good prof and funny! Just the class was really heavy so I don't think I would take it again due to that and the tests are long and very specific, so really study the best you can cause you have to work hard and memorize lots for this class!
really friendly and easy to get in contact with through email. very textbook and lecture heavy. if you don't read the textbook and take good notes you will def struggle more on the tests. class composed of only 3 exams so be sure to take good notes and understand the content. exams are straightforward and easy.
A super caring woman and a capable prof. Easy to do well in her class if you put in the work, would definitely recommend taking her
such an awesome prof, super understanding and accommodating! I loved her!
By far my favorite class, and professor! Pavelka is hilarious, and the course material is extremely interesting. Would highly recommend this class with this prof. You need to know your stuff though for the tests
Her lectures are fun to listen to, she cracks jokes here and there. I enjoyed this class and would take again!
Dr. Pavelka is an incredible professor. She is really funny and is great at explaining concepts. I took this course as an elective, and it is by no means an easy A. There's a lot of material to cover, but honestly it never felt overwhelming because the topics are very interesting. If you are interested in human evolution, take this course with her.
Dr. Pavelka is an amazing prof! She wants her students to do well, and that is evident in her lectures. You have to do the readings, they help get a better understanding. She is very helpful. Very quick marker.
Amazing professor. She's extremely intelligent and engaging, and the material is really interesting. Some nitpicky questions and the entire course is based on 3 exams.
Dr. Pavelka truly made ANTH201 a class I won't forget. She is so inspiring, accommodating and understanding! The course itself requires a good amount of effort to do well (textbook readings and taking good lecture notes) but it is not unreasonable. Overall she was awesome and I hope I can have her again in the future as a prof.
This class was an absolute nightmare. Her tests were extremely hard for absolutely no reason. I worked so hard in this class and there is definitely a lot of readings. The content its self is very interesting and I liked it but the exams are very difficult and she does not give enough time per question and her questions are extremely detailed.
Dr. Pavelka is clearly a very knowledgeable professor. Her lectures are very informative, and her end of class Q&A is very helpful for understanding the concepts. Make sure you have the textbook and read it, as many questions on the final exams are in the book. If you pay attention and take good notes, you will succeed in this class.
Three exams and a final, that's it so make sure to study. Luckily the exams were open book and she made the material interesting. Very fun teacher, you'll enjoy the content. Questions on exams were fair but even with access to notes/textbook you'll have to work for a good mark. No complaints, definitely take her course.
Since it was only online it may be difficult to judge. However, as somebody taking the course just to dabble it was very enjoyable due to the professor. She was kind and brought a spark to a rather depressing year. A gem of a prof, and I wouldn't doubt a gem of a person.
The workload she assigns for this class is ridiculous. There is so much you are expected to know and the tests themselves are rather difficult with VERY subjective answer choices. She doesn't record lectures (especially during a time where you should stay home when sick) but says that anything she says that anything said in lecture can be tested!
I've taken great classes w/Pavelka pre-COVID, but the quality of her teaching has seriously declined. She'd spend weeks teaching us interesting content, then base every midterm off of a vaguely related book/podcast she'd just read & threw in last minute. It got tiresome. Why bother teaching a lecture if you're not going to test us on any of it?
Love her! Her tests are pretty hard and you definitely need to attend lectures and read the assigned readings to do well, but she's a great speaker and extremely fast to respond to any email questions. Put the work in and this class will be great!
Wasnt an easy course by any means. You really get what you put into the class. So if youre looking for a chill option dont pick this class. Grading was based off four quizzes on D2L. If you attend your lectures, know how to CTRL+F on the textbook, and spend time studying its a really interesting course. Super interesting class & lectures.
Dr. Pavelka really set a great impression on me as a first year! She is very funny and engaging in lecture and she puts a very clear emphasis on what we should be taking away and what can be tested. This is important as your grade is based on 4 exams, which can be spooky. As long as you attend classes, you will definitely have a good time.
I enjoyed her class but you definitely had to work for your grade. Her tests include many questions from the textbook and specific things said in class that aren't in the lecture slides, meaning attendance is mandatory to do well. Her sense of humour definitely made the lectures entertaining! Although she only allows paper notes :(
If you're looking for an easy option don't take this class. Your grade is based on 4 tests and they're very difficult if you don't pay full attention in class or read the textbook. Took this thinking it would be a grade booster and ended up having it be the worst grade I got all semester.
I took her class back in 2019, and after all this time I still think of her jokes and laugh about them. I have not had a professor funnier than her.
Super passionate about her research and teaching and great and explaining the course work
All her lectures were super engaging and fun to listen to, you could tell she definitely cares about her students. Tests were open book and online which was super nice. Wouldn't recommend skipping her lectures, but the slides she posted were fairly detailed. Looking forward to taking a class with her again.
I love Pavelka. This was my first class with all papers & it was a struggle to get thru the readings & do the papers, but she made the writing topics clear enough that it was very manageable! She's also super understanding to students with academic accommodations & went above & beyond to help me succeed.
Dr. Pavelka is a boss. Super engaging lectures and a genuinely funny person. Test aren’t easy though, you need to pay attention to readings and lectures regularly.
Ms.Pavelka is one of the best professors that I've ever had. Tbh I didn't perform well on my first mid-term exam. But with the on-time replied email questions and encouragement given. I had actually performed ok at the end of the course. She really cares about her student not only in the academic aspect but also in mental and real-life aspects.
Pavelka is probably my favourite professor at UofC, im not an anthropology major but I love taking her classes. She is kind, funny, honest and dose not fair. I can't recommend her enough.
I'm a 3rd-year BSc student and took this course as an option. It's based on 4 tests, all were extremely difficult. They are open book; but, most questions can't be found within the articles or notes. The class average for the 2nd test was 64! Don't take as an easy option unless you plan on doing your own research daily. Waste of time and money.
Took this class as an option. She doesnt allow keyboard note-taking in class. You will have to use pen/paper or flat device to take notes. Grade component was 4 tests and were extremely difficult. At every opportunity, she will trick you in her tests. Average was 60s for the first 2 tests. You will have to read 30+ articles that will be in the test
I took ANTH 201 as an EZ A cause of all the good reviews. her class consists of 4 tests in the semester with no exams, meaning each test is worth a good amount. but, she barely answers people's questions in class and even refers to "google it" when we ask questions. Her test is hard and the class average for the first two tests was around 64. AVOID
Based only on tests worth so much of your grade. Questions are so confusing. Impossible to answer. There are also no extra credit projects or papers to boost your grade so if you do bad on a test it will affect your grade so much. Do no reccomend!
The worst thing about her is that she doesn't let you use your laptop to take notes unless you give her a good enough reason, like is paying over $600 for this class not a good enough reason?? Tests on a lot of heavy articles and specific details about weird anecdotes she shares.
4 tests determine your entire grade. I think she's in the early stages of trying out this online test format so she still needs to perfect it. Amazing as a teacher and person but tests had no reason to be that difficult and confusing. You won't succeed in this course if you just read the notes once. Make sure you attend lectures and review daily.
She's overall pretty funny and friendly. The lectures and readings are quite dense and so are the tests. The first two test averages were terrible, but she really took our feedback to heart, made some changes, and everyone did much better on test 3. If you put the effort in, you'll do great, but it's definitely not an easy A.
The exam questions were fair and can be found in the notes/readings. Graded by four tests (but this is standard for a uni class). Also, the amount of time dedicated to the readings per test was also standard. I am not sure why there are bad reviews for this class because everything is pretty much what you would expect from any other class you take
Course was extremely difficult. Other than test 3 the other tests were extremely confusing and difficult wether or not you studied. I studied for open book tests, knew all the materials and yet the questions were so long and difficult it was still impossible to do well on. Extremely hard class. Lectures were interesting tho.
Dr. Pavelka was a fantastic professor. Easy-to-follow readings and really engaging lectures. I was initially a bit concerned as science is not my strong suit, but I came out with a great mark. I disagree with folks who say this was a very difficult course. If you take the time to do the readings and take notes, you'll do great.
Awesome professor who's super caring of students success. Lectures are important to attend and be attentive! Overall an awesome funny prof with good open book tests.
Dr. Pavelka is an amazing professor! The tests are all open book and online with a 24 hour time window. Some questions could be hard, but fair. Her lectures are very clear but, even without them, the presentation slides(uploaded on D2L) are clear and detailed.
Fairly straightforward class but you HAVE to show up to the lectures in order to pass her tests. Her tests are generally lecture based & uses a lot of questions or examples that she brings up during lectures for tests. She is a great prof just be sure to show up to her lectures and you'll do great!!! She had a 24hr window for online exams too!
The tests are hella hard. it is 50% from readings and 50% ppt. The test itself, there's so many things you need to read and not a lot of time for you to go back and check your answers. there's a 24hrs window for you to do your test and its open book but don't get fool cuz it a lot harder than you thought.
Took anthropology 201 during fall 2022 as a gpa booster. Pretty easy class if your taking 4 other classes as there are only 4 tests that make up your whole grade. Tests are fair as long as you show up to lectures, pay attention (as some of the things she mentions through lecturing shows up on exams), make detailed notes on your readings, easy A.
She does not allow students to use digital devices to take notes without special permission, something that some people feel ashamed to request and therefore will fall behind, due to how fast she moves between slides. This can cause difficulty with taking notes, and therefore can hurt the student going forward.
Pavelka was my fav prof this semester! Found her lectures very interesting and organized. She doesn't allow electronic devices for note taking, and actually found it to be beneficial as felt had to pay more attention. She tests on things mentioned in lectures so would recommend attending. All tests were online open book which made them quite easy.
An amazing prof who clearly knows her stuff! She is funny and her lectures are really interesting. I was worried about having to take handwritten notes at the start, but most of what she talks about is already on her posted lecture slides, so you just need to write the extra stuff she mentions. Test questions require studying but are fair.
Dr. Pavelka is an incredible prof and person. I found her to be a truly inspiring woman in all aspects and the way she teaches was unlike any other prof I have ever had. I am a second year bio major and this class was honestly a breath of fresh air since I disliked my other classes and profs. Content is introductory and tests are very fair.
My favourite prof yet! Her lectures are so entertaining, and the material is very interesting. Don't skip class, read the articles, and review the lectures; you will do well. She is extremely fair, very kind, and just an amazing woman. Anth is not my major, but Dr Pavelka has become a personal inspiration to me.
Lectures were amazing and engaging. 4 tests. -all online, multiple choice and T/F. Really need to understand the concept to do well. Reading articles is required.
I was a little worried about her no-tech rule, but it actually kept me focused in lectures, so I enjoyed it. Her lectures were engaging, she would tell funny stories and make lots of jokes, and the slides had most of the important info. The tests weren't too hard if you did the reading and made good notes. I'd definitely recommend her classes.
Dr. Pavelka is the best. Engaging lectures with interesting content and readings. She has an open mind and is interested in hearing others' opinions. Class involved 3 essays which I felt were assigned and graded fairly. 10/10 class and prof. I hope I can take another class with her in the future.
Great professor, clearly is very passionate about the subject she teaches. Her lectures were somewhat entertaining and her slides were well organized. Tests are open book, but you're doomed if you can't remember every little detail of every article you read or details from personal anecdotes. As someone with ADD, this made thing v e r y hard
Lectures are mandatory to do well, however they are super interesting and engaging. There is a no tech policy, but it helped me focus and if you prefer writing notes on an ipad/laptop you just need permission. Tests were open book but you do need to know your stuff. Ask questions, she's very accessible and kind. Would take another class with her.
The class was 5 online tests, the last few were quite challenging. The class average was a C- for one of them (for a class of 400) which says a lot. I took this class as a grade booster but it lowered my gpa. No laptop policy. She uses things that she says only once in class on the quizzes sometimes so attendance to all classes are mandatory.
Dr. Pavelka cares for her students' success and is awesome at teaching. She is very organized, too. I definitely recommend her.
She was okay. Her classes were structured, and she explained things well.
Attending lectures are mandatory to do well, however they are super interesting and engaging. There is a no tech policy, but it helps w/focus & if you prefer writing notes on an iPad/laptop you just need permission. Test is open boon. Ask questions, she's very accessible and kind. Would definitely take another class with her.
Engaging lectures, but tests require detailed knowledge. No tech policy helps focus, though writing notes on iPad is allowed. Unstuckstudy AI proved useful for review and prep. Overall, an interesting class with a fair workload.
Pavelka is the best prof, so funny and caring. Lecture are interesting and engaging, her testing format is 3 papers, she provides a lot of instruction for your success, and she is very approachable outside of class I highly recommend!
Prof. Pavelka is a wonderful person. I have taken multiple courses just because she is the professor. She knows her information and explains difficult concepts well. You can tell she is passionate about her subject and her students. She's also hilarious and makes lectures enjoyable to attend.
Never had a more disorganized professor in my whole life, thankfully I'm not an anthropology major, if I was I'd avoid
A very knowledgeable professor, and the class is interesting. However, the tests are disorganized and based on lots of required reading (more than what has actually been taught in lecture), and there is a no laptop rule that is implied to be based on the profs personal preferences and a single incident. Only take this if you have the time for this.
she's a very good professor who knows her stuff. exams are very hard she's very disrespectful to students she believes aren't trying. will essentially call you stupid and lazy no matter how hard you try
This class was so interesting! I loved Pavelka's lectures. However, I would not recommend this class or prof if you have a heavy semester. The tests are difficult and it is easy to fall behind if you do not have time to dedicate hours to the required readings. I loved this class at the beginning, but by the end it was a lot to keep up with.
I like Pavelka as a prof - very clear that she's passionate about anthropology but she needs to figure out a balance for her tests. I understand they need to curb cheating since tests are online but I felt that they were very difficult this semester, and that's coming from someone who's really interested in the field. Definitely NOT a GPA booster.
Tests were open-book but much more difficult than I anticipated, very heavy on the readings which need to be done outside of class. Lecture is important as she will often have questions about stories/analogies mentioned in class. A super fun prof though, she tries to relate to her students when possible and make them laugh. Fun lecture to attend
