Professor Pierce is rude, catty, and not willing to work with her students whatsoever. The workload within the timespan of the class is completely unreasonable. She constantly puts her students down. Avoid her at all costs!!!
She is the worst teacher I've ever had.She is very unfair. Her questions are long and unclear & then she'll take off points for not answering something she didn't even ask.She only gives negative feedback. She doesn't set a schedule & she'll assign things in the am & make them due that evening. It is a lot of work and nothing is good enough for her
Worst teacher. She never gives any positive feedback on papers/assignments. She doesn't give you a schedule so you never really know when things are due until the day or a couple days before. Her policies are ridiculous - for example she takes points off if you use contractions in a paper, and writes 5 pages of directions for a 5 page paper
Worst professor I've had at UofA, assignments that are unclear and so much work for what should be a simple assignment or task to make it unbearably difficult. Textbook taught course and puts down the entire class once. 20 page syllabus with only 2 pages at the end for the schedule 5 page spec sheet for a 4-5 page paper not good teacher AVOID
Worst course I have ever taken, would not recommend this professor to anyone. The assignments are terrible and all due on the weekends and are the worst garbage assignments I have ever seen this class is terrible and she is a horrible teacher who does not know what she is doing and needs to quit her job because she is not good at it at all. FAIL!
She is always willing to help.
She works hard and expects students to work hard.
Her clear instructions make the course easy to follow. She is very encouraging.
Helpful and has greta knowledge of the course materials.
Helpful ans inspires students.
Very helpful and smart. I liked our online discussions; she truly inspired us. Prof. Pierce gave very encouraging comments. She wants the students to work hard but also is an easy grader. Lots of extra points for hard work. Highly recommend her course.
Extra helpful and understanding. This was my favorite course of the semester. She made the course fun and interesting. I really enjoyed our presentation assignments, and mock trial of Charles I. Lots of extra points for any extra works. We all received 5 extra points for attending the mock debates. Will take again.
Pierce is enthusiastic. I like a lot of the reading assignments specially Voices of Morebath. I like the presentations and the research for it. She knows her stuff. I learned a lot about England and even English coffee houses. She made English history fun with nice visuals. I liked the course.
Good lecturer, kind, very helpful, and gives extra points easily. I enjoyed the course and learned more than I had anticipated. liked her attitude about the subject.
Not sure about the course when signed up, but ended up really liking it. learned a lot. no long papers. Lot of extra points for those who do the work. You get a lot of help when you go to her office. Good course overall.
GOOD COURSE. LIKED THE TAKE-HOME TEST, THEY WERE LONG BUT NOT HARD IF YOU HAVE THE TEXTBOOKS AND ATTENDED CLASS. PRESENTATIONS WERE GREAT. I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT THE SPANISH ARMADA. WE EVEN LEARNED ABOUT SOCCER, SHE IS A CHELSEA FAN. SHE IS SHY.
Liked the course, am big fan of the Tudors. No in-class tests. 2 Take home tests only. She provided a list of study questions 2 weeks in advance, and 3 to 4 days to finish the tests because they were long. gave good feedback on the essays. The class time is 50 minute sessions only, too short for history class.
I love to read so found the class easy. I liked the instructor and found her very helpful every time I went to her office. Mock debates were fun. Recommend the course.
Professor Pierce is a great teacher. Before the semester began, she sent a very nice email to the whole class. She is very hard working and makes the course interesting. She is very helpful and caring. I personally found Prof. Pierce smart and approachable. Be sure to go to her office hours. Great course to take, you will learn a lot.
Prof. Pierce has different teaching method, but once I focused I learned to appreciate her. She really wants you to participate & learn. If you R not into reading abt England the crse is not 4 you. I'm into European hist so the course was easy. She is very helpful. Lots of extra points 4 slightest sign of effort. Loved the visuals, debates, films.
Overall good course, interesting subject, and hard working instructor. Ms. Pierce is a very helpful, smart instructor. I felt sometimes she was unfairly misunderstood. She is shy cause sort of new to the field, but inspirational. You learn a lot from her. Do you work and you will get an A.
Good teacher and learned a lot from her. Made English history interesting. Very caring about how students are doing. No in-class exams and essays are short. She likes soccer. Recommend the class.
Fairly easy course, & very interesting. I like this instructor because she even emailed me to congratulate me about how well I had done on my test. Never a teacher did that for me. Recommended.
Truly interesting course & great instructor. Mock debates are awesome. Assignments are easy if you have done the readings, and the essays are very short. In this course you learn a lot about the life of Henry VIII, Thomas More, Elizabeth I, Thomas Cromwell, Charles I, General Monck, and witchcraftwitch trials. Will take again.
I really like the course and the instructor's passion for English history. Prof. Pierce is helpful and quick in answering emails. Very understanding. Not a difficult course tall but if you don't like to read or are not into history, then it is not easy. Lots of extra credits for hard work. Enjoyed the film assignments. Highly recommend.
Learned a lot. Really interesting. I thought I knew this period. But, I gained a whole new perspective. I think Mary Pierce is a very gifted instructor. She made history so interesting. Other professors are just boring "talking heads." There are debates, court documents re. cheating spouses, stories of three queens ... All that drama. So cool.
Very poor teaching skills and assigns impossible homework sometimes. Get ready for her narrated power points every single class without fail. Her teaching methods consist or her talking for an hour or more and is terrible. This is an upper division history course but that being said her assignments are ridiculous and often times very long
I took this course online, and bar none the best course I have ever taken. I ended up talking about the course materials even with my friends. Professor Pierce is awesome, and truly cares about her students. She gave very engaging assignments including our online discussions. Very interesting course. Will take again.
Professor Pierce is great. Even though this was not a face to face course, I really liked her and her method of teaching. She is amazingly helpful, reasonable and sooooo knowledgeable about the Tudor-Stuart era. Crystal clear instructions for all the assignments. My favorite online course this summer.
Awesome course. I learned a lot despite the fact the course was less than a month, Summer Pre-session. Dr. Pierce is encouraging & helpful. Assigned engaging assignments, including a short paper on Thomas More, film review essay, meaningful and fun discussions. Gave plenty of instructions. I was never confused. Exams were reasonable. Recommended :)
Just finished taking this course. Absolutely loved it. Professor P. made this course very interesting. Our online group discussions and role playing was awesome. She is very passionate teacher and inspired me to learn about 16th and 17th century England. Having varieties of assignments was very helpful. Will take again.
Loved the course. Keeping up with the readings and participation are important if you want to get an A. Pierce is a great and very understanding instructor. Will take again.
Loved taking this course. This was an online course, so I never met her face-to-face. But I really liked her helpfulness. She seems to love what she does, and somehow inspired me too.
Taking this class currently 2015; I like the professor, she is nice and helpful. This class includes lectures, discussions, group presentations, online discussions, take-home exams, map quiz, and short essays. Plenty of ways to earn grades. Tudor era is a bit too long though, but a lot happened between 1533-1603. Have to read read. Recommended.
Hands down the worst teacher I have ever had at the U of A. She cannot speak English well, so it is hard to understand anything she says. She has no clear grading rubric, so many of the grades she gives out are inconsistent. She makes up assignments mid-semester that are not on the syllabus, and assigns tons of busy work. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Dr. Pierce is one of the best teachers I've had, and really does care about her student's outcomes. This class does require a fair amount of reading and busy work, but I mean - it's an upper division history class. Anyway, if you put in the effort Dr. Pierce will know it; she freely gives extra credit for well-deserving work. Highly recommend.
2015- One of the best ever hist courses offered at the UA; I love Dr. Pierce's lectures; the assignments; she is smart, caring & works very hard. I have learned so much about English Hist in this course. I love the varieties of assignments in this course. Highly Recommended.
Dr. Pierce is among the best lecturers I have had. I like the many ways that we are able to earn points. She is easy going but expects good work. Exams are take-homes. Lots of readings but her lectures help. Lots of extra points. I loved our Online Group discussions. Will take again.
I enjoyed taking this course. Dr. Pierce really cares about her students. I like how she takes time after every lecture to answer questions. She puts great emphasis on correct documentation of sources & footnote format. She knows her material. Best history course.
Amazing course. I love this class including the lectures, in-class debates, online group discussions, take-home exams, and group presentation. The essay are short. Dr. Pierce is friendly, understanding and expects good work. I have learned a lot in this course. Be sure to take this course if you love history of the Tudors.
This is a great class with a great instructor. Dr. Pierce makes the material interesting. Lots of work but she gives extra credit for hard work. I like how she answers students' questions after each lecture; she cares about her students. Online group discussions were great & I like our group presentation. Informative lectures, not boring . Take it!
Great class. Requires lots of reading, assignments are short, tests are take-home. Instructor is helpful and flexible. Cares about students and their needs. Instructions are crystal clear. Nice lectures always. Lots of extra credit for genuine effort. I recommend this course.
Great class. Requires lots of reading, assignments are short, tests are take-home. Instructor is helpful and flexible. Instructions are always clear. Nice lectures always. I recommend this course.
Honestly, I like this class and the topic it covers. I like the instructor. She is caring and wants her students to strive for the best. She makes history interesting. She has lots of great historical stories to tell. I enjoyed the course.
Contrary to claims by some, Dr. Pierce's syllabus spells out everything very clearly, including grading rubric. There are plenty of guides and resources posted in D2L to help students. She is smart, thorough, and gives plenty of extra credit for hard work. I like this class and recommend it highly.
My favorite class this semester. I have learned a lot from Dr. Pierce and the readings. She is easy going and gives her students a lot of chances to improve their grades. I love history so I do not mind the readings. I have no problem understanding her. I will take this class again.
Take this course. The instructor is amazing. I didn't know anything about the Tudors or the Stuarts, and I have learned more than I expected. yes, you have to read, but it is history course. She makes it very interesting. We even had a mock trial of Charles I, awesome:)
I loved the lectures in this course; they were definitely boring. The instructor is enthusiastic and wants her students to learn. Lots to read but then again it is a 300 level history course. Instructions are very clear. She gives helpful feedback and lots of extra points for hard work. Highly recommended.
I loved the lectures in this course; they were definitely informative & not boring. The instructor is enthusiastic and wants her students to learn. Lots to read but then again it is a 300 level history course. Instructions are very clear. She gives helpful feedback and lots of extra points for hard work. Highly recommended.
Clear instructions, clear lectures, and very helpful. Expects good work and gives extra points for hard work. Very flexible and understanding. She is also very smart and knows her stuff. I like the take-home exams. Highly recommended.
Professor Pierce is probably one of the nicest teachers you will ever meet. All of her tests are take home tests. She offers extra credit via an extra credit question on most assignments, and if you go the extra mile in your group presentation. Just be prepared to read/use the two textbooks thoroughly.
Dr. Pierce is such an inspiration to an aspiring historian! She is so enthusiastic about history and it shows in her lectures. It is a lot of writing in terms of her exams, but her instructions couldn't be more clear. Whoever wrote that she makes up assignments and doesn't use a rubric must not have read the syllabus! She has been one of my favs!:)
Totally inspirational teacher. She works hard and expects good work. Lots of readings; her exams are take homes. My favorite reading: The Voices of Morebath. She gives extra credits for hard work, and gives very positive feedbacks. Take this course.
Professor Pierce was extremely helpful and nice. There are a lot of readings but I didn't do most of them and still did well. Listen to her lectures and you'll be good to go. You will need some of the readings because she assigns take home tests that you will need to cite the readings on. Lectures are hit and miss, but the professor is great!
I loved this class. I did NOT feel that lectures were hit and miss. Very interesting lectures; very informative. She gives extra credits for efforts so it is not hard to get an A. You will not walk out of this class without learning a great amount of history about early England. Recommended.
Excellent course, great professor. It is a history course, so there are readings and writings. Exams are take homes. Essays are short; must learn to footnote. I learned a lot in this class. Group presentations were great.
This course is on the Tudor-Stuart dynasties. I enjoyed the class and found the professor very nice and helpful. She really cares about what she teaches and her students. Lectures are very interesting, and the PPts are very helpful. Varieties of assignments, and I liked most of them. Take this class.
Awesome course; I am a history lover. Lectures were great and interesting. Not hit an miss at all. Expects hard work and the exams are long but then again they are take-homes exams. She has excellent attitude towards teaching and very helpful to her students. She loves what she teaches; it is obvious. Take her courses.
Dr. Pierce is great, and the subject of the course is very interesting. She is very passionate about her course and gives great lectures. Her instructions are crystal clear. If you put in the efforts, she definitely awards you for it. I learned a lot more about 15th/16th century England that I though I would. This course is great. Recommended.
This course was one of my favs. I liked the subject and the professor; she is the nicest ever. I enjoyed Mock Trial of Charles I and our online discussions. Take the course if you get a chance.
Enjoyed taking this course. Great Professor, subject and lengthy but fair take-home exams. Group presentations were great and I learned a lot; online discussions were well-planned with clear instructions. Highly recommended.
Loved this course a lot. Take the course with this instructor; she is a great teacher and very helpful. Very passionate about her course. I would take her courses anytime.
Professor Pierce is one of the WORST professors I've had. She does not speak clearly, and when it's possible to understand her, she's going off on tangents completely unrelated to the topic. She takes points off for improper citations, but doesn't tell you how to fix them. She assigns ridiculous amounts of busy work that has no real point at all.
My favorite class since I joined the UA; provides instructions 4 every single assignment & they R posted on course's D2L site. She speaks clearly and gives very interesting lectures. Very very helpful, sincere, respectful & inspiring instructor. Highly Recommended.
Enjoyed this course a lot; I have recommended it to many of my friends. Dr. Pierce is smart and makes you interested in English Hist. Loved our in-class projects. She works hard & her instructions are crystal clear. I agree with previous person; all one has to do is to look up D2L & find the instructions. I will take her class again.
Most helpful, smart and approachable teacher. My favorite course ever. Glad I took my 1st hist course with Dr. Pierce. I appreciated how she posted detailed instructions for every assignments in D2L and posted daily news in our homepage. I will take her course this summer. Inspiring instructor and I highly recommend her and classes she teaches.
There are a lot of readings in this course, but it is a history course. The instructor is one of the most caring and passionate teachers in Hist Dept. Gives detailed instructions, varieties of assignments, lots of positive feedback, gives plenty of extra credit for thoughtful work/writing. I learned a lot in this course.
Lectures are interesting because she is passionate about the material. Refreshing to have a professor who cares about what she teaches. Workload is not too bad and not hard to stay on top of it. I really liked the films and our online group discussions. Have been recommending it.
My favorite course & one of my favorite professors. She treats you with respect. I do not like studying history but liked this class. There are a lot of readings but manageable. I will take Professor Pierce' summer course AFAS 306.
I took this course online this summer. Awesome course, and I learned a lot about African American Women writings as well as the history of American slavery. The professor is great and one of the nicest instructor I have had at the UA so far. Highly recommend her and the course.
D. Pierce really cares about her students. Syllabus, instructions and grading criteria are crystal clear, which made this online course stress free for me. She is available by email and her online office. Lots of readings, but not boring. Dr. Pierce gives extra credit for hard work. Love to take more classes with her. Take this course.
Hands down one of the best courses ever, and the best and most hard working professors I have ever had at the UA. Dr. Pierce truly cares about every single one of her students. I loved the readings & our discussion sessions. She is encouraging & inspirational; lots of extra points for extra efforts. Highly recommend her and her courses.
Best course I have taken at the UA so far. Dr. Pierce is awesome, inspirational, and very very encouraging. She assigns interesting course materials. Gives great feedbacks and gives extra credits of hard work. Will take courses with her again.
First time taking Online Course, & glad to take it with Dr. Pierce. Very helpful & understanding. There are lots readings & you have to work for your grade. But everything is clearly explained & she also goes out of her way to answer all your questions. I like how she set up the discussion forums. I am very impressed & taking her Spring Course too.
Do your work and follow the rubrics and this is an easy A. She emails within 45 minutes if you have a concern. I received multiple extra credit points by just completing the assignments. the MCQP set up allows you to see what the test questions will be like. All around great teacher and easy/interesting class.
Great Course and Greatest instructor. I learned a lot and worked hard too, but it was all worth it. Dr. Pierce gives a lot of extra credit for hard work. She really works with you if you are willing to make the effort. Very smart and caring instructor. I will take every course she offers.
Best Online course; I was afraid of taking online courses. But taking this course with Dr. Pierce proved to me that I could do it again. She is caring, extremely helpful, always available to answer questions & gave extra credit for efforts. I loved our assignments particularly the film Sophie School. Yes, I will take courses with Dr. Pierce again.
One of the most caring and inspirational professors I have had at the UA. She tries to help in everyday possible. Answers emails in less that an hour. Gives plenty of extra credit for genuine effort. Provides detailed instructions, and expects you to follow them. Will take her courses again. She is inspiring.
Prof. Pierce makes taking online class a pleasant experience. From day one she offered extra credit assignments. Gives easy to follow instructions, communicates daily via Homepage & reminds you of upcoming assignments. Prof. Pierce is quick to praise your work & gives extra points when you work hard. Very sympathetic teacher. Recommend her highly.
My first one Course and will definitely take more. I loved reading the autobiographies by African American women. We even wrote our own autobiography. Dr. Pierce is simple the kindest instructor ever. She always gives you 2nd and 3rd chances. We could revise our papers more than once to improve our grade. Take her course & I am this summer.
I don't like history & took the course because I needed the credits. Dr. Pierce's course made me actually interested in European hist. I loved the film Sophie Scholl. Never heard of it before. Loved making multiple choice Qs, Excellent readings, easy exams, and engaging discussions. A great 7-weeks course. Take her course, you will love it.
I don't like history & took the course because I needed the credits. Dr. Pierce's course made me actually interested in European hist. I loved the film Sophie Scholl. Never heard of it before. Loved making multiple choice Qs,. A great 7-weeks course. Take her course, you will love it.
Awesome
Excellent course, enjoyed it thoroughly. Dr. Pierce made this online course great and a fun one. Lost of extra points if you work hard. Participation and reading matters. I loved the readings, and even learned about Elizabeth Keckley. Awesome course, and I am also taking a summer course with her. Highly recommend her classes.
Awesome and caring. Made this online course very interesting. Great readings and films. The class started with a vey interesting video by James Baldwin. I even made my family members watch it. I will not hesitate to take her classes again.
Great professor, her grading is very thorough but not unmanageable. She gives ample opportunities for students that want to learn, and has extra credit opportunities. If you put in the effort you will get an A and learn a lot about African history. I had a great experience!
NOT accessible outside class which sucks for an online course. Horrible at responding to emails and wasn't online during her online office hours. Class is an easy A, she gives extra credit if you put in some effort. Easy exams, interesting movies and readings. Would take again even though she's not accessible.
On elf the best online courses I have taken. What I liked about this online course was that I could meet with the professor in her actual office. She was also available in her Online Office. Professor Pierce is wonderful & always available to help. She gives extra credits for hard work, and interesting assignments. Will take her class again
Best professor ever and great Online class. I learned a lot and enjoyed all the assignments. I enjoyed writing my research paper. It was on the topic of my choice. Dr. Pierce is great at answering emails within 15-30 minutes. She was always available to meet. Highly recommended course and professor+++.
Have taken 2 Online courses with Dr. Pierce & had positive experience in both. She is caring & always available to help. She assigns interesting materials. Gives extra credit for hard & meaningful work, particularly for participating in Online Group Discussions. You have to do the readings. Will take her courses anytime.
Great course and great instructor. I took this course because I needed a TIER 2 course, & I am glad that I took it with Dr. Pierce. She is caring & always available to help. I met with her during her Online office, she was very helpful. I learned a lot in this course even about the connection between African & Egyptian history. Highly Recommend.
Best Online course I have takes. Clear instructions & easy to follow. The instructor is very nice and answers emails mostly in less than 45 minutes. She is very helpful especially when I met wit her in her Online office. Must do readings for group discussions. Very good textbook although expensive. Will take her courses again.
Just finished taking this class in Pre-Session. Loved the class and instructor. Have to have the textbook, but is a good book. I learned a lot, more than I thought I would. No exam but must read for the discussions. The instructor is very fair and caring. I like that she could meet in her actual and online office. Will take her courses.
Dr. Pierce is one of the best professors from the U of A. She genuinely cares about her students' success in her class! The work is challenging and requires you to read the assigned content and actually think about it. However, she will be there for you every step of the way to make sure you succeed. She's great!
I highly recommend Dr. Pierce. She is very easy to work with. Participation matters & a lot of interesting readings. I learned a lot & got great feedback on my works. Submitting a rough draft was a great idea.
Wow, this was my favorite class this semester. Excellent lectures. Walked into this class knowing little about English history but Dr. Pierce's lectures & assignments helped me learn a lot. She made it fascinating. Mock Trial of Charles I was great. Yes, extra points for doing superior work. Will take her classes anytime; taking her Spring course.
Great course, well-knowledges and helpful professor, great lectures, good class discussions and group assignments, and extra credits. I learned a lot about 16 and 17 century England. Will take class with Dr. pierce again.
ABSOLUTLEY AMAZING!!!! DR. POERCE IS THE BEST! SUCH A WONDERFUL AND KNOWLEDGEABLE WOMAN! WOULD TAKE HER CLASS AGAIN!
Loved this class. Would take any class with this instructor. She is a great teacher, and cares about students. In this class, I learned how to write better. I giver her A+.
The course is awesome, interesting readings, tests are easy, instructor very helpful. Discussions challenging if you do not follow the requirements but lots of extra points for exemplary postings. My favorite thing about the instructor is her caring about us and her quick email responses. Yes will take class with her again.
This class was straight forward and the material was interesting. However, because this is an online class, most of the communication is done through email. The one time that I emailed Dr. Pierce, she was rude. Being that this was my first actual encounter with her during the semester, it made me not want to have any further communication with her
I liked this class a lot. The teacher is very helpful and fast in answering emails. We had short quizzes and a lot of Online Discussions and 1 final paper. The teacher gave very clear instructions. Easy to get an A or B in class if you follow instructions and we had re-write opportunity. I liked that. Will take course with her again.
Very interesting course. Class is Online and very clearly set up. The instructor is available through email, online office hrs and in actual office. I went to her actual office several times. Very kind and respectful woman and helpful. Excellent choice of readings and only 1 research paper. No other papers. Will take class with her in the Fall.
I took this class face-to-face. Small class but I learned so much in this class. I liked the lectures a lot. Favorite part: no exams & still learned a lot. lot of in-class discussions & several biweekly short writings. Another favorite part, my group presentation and I wrote my final research paper on the same topic. Great instructor. Will take +
I want to thank Dr. Pierce for a really wonderful class. I found it not only enjoyable but incredibly educational. I would highly recommend this class to any student looking to learn more about history ofAmerican Slavery. I would also recommend Dr. Pierce to anyone looking to take any of her classes!
2nd class I took by Dr. Pierce. Hardest class I've taken thus far, but Dr. Pierce helped me when I went and saw her during office hours and always listened to me when I needed help! Lots of papers and her grading wasn't always clear, but there are rubrics. Textbook is a good choice compared to some others! Can say I learned a lot!!
Took the class because I love Irish hist. Hard class because a lot of writings. But the assignments R well explained, detailed Guide & Rubric. Grader graded papers (not my favorite). Dr. Pierce graded Discussions. She gave detailed feedback. High expectations, so BS does not work in this class. Learned a lot. Extra points for excellent works :)
1st time taking Pre-Session online. It was hard; the greatest point about the course was that Dr. Pierce provided the exact page #s for each assignments, so did not have to read everything. Readings arranged perfectly & helped me learn a lot. Group discussion online was good but responding to others not my favorite. Liked final paper. Great class.
This was my 2nd class with Dr. Pierce & still happy with her teaching method & the way she treats her students. I learned a lot about African American hist. Liked reading about Bacon's Rebellion. Discussion Qs make you read carefully & critically. Very helpful, gives extra points for hard work. I will take her AFAS 306 in Fall. Highly recommended.
Loved Dr. Pierce. Heard a lot about her, her great classes & attitude towards students. All true. Learned a lot in her class; must read & must participate. But she does not assign 100s of pages. Only specific chapters and pages. She made an online course very interesting; inspired me to do better by giving positive feedback. Highly recommended.
Dr. Pierce is a great professor & would definitely take another class with her again. Dr. Pierce provides very specific instructions. The discussion posts are open for 2 days (typically during the weekend) & the questions are not provided before hand so plan your time wisely. Extra credit available. Answers emails usually within 24hrs.
Heard a lot about this instructor before & took her course. She is very hard working & helps students a lot. Is always available. She gives a lot of weekly work but not heavy reading load. Participation matters a lot but class is too big. Like what I am learning about Africa; some of textbooks ehh. Will probably take a course again.
Liked the course and the instructor. I learned a lot from her. Class was too big & student were okay. Instructor is caring, gives a lot of work but allows to revise. Readings not heavy but lots of writing. Overall and A course. Will take her class again.
AFAS 200 is a great course. I liked my presentation on Tunisia. A lot of readings on Africa. Textbooks boring. Great professor and very smart. Lots of writings but she gives detailed feedback. This course should not be 16 weeks. I will take course with her again because she is very helpful.
Dr. Pierce is the best. She gives great lectures, inspires students, and always ready to help. She gives clear instructions and chance to revise works. Loved the readings & topics. Lots of different assignments, so not boring. Gives samples. enjoyed this class. Didn't like how some students treated her. Will take her classes.
The course was okay. Not a big fan of autobiography readings. Lectures were good. Did not like all the writings. Exams were okay because they were take home. The Instructor was too strict about cell phones and I disagree. It is my phone and I should be able to use it anywhere. I was bored, but I liked the teacher. She is caring.
Did not know what to expect in an online course. Dr. Pierce made it easy, clear, and interesting. Great readings, learned a lot. Did not like the collaborative writing project, had a hard to reach partner. Appreciated organization of the course, made sense. 2 many questions in Discussions but forces you to read. Will sign up with her again.
Well, I have taken several AFAS courses & found this course & this instructor the best. Thought provoking readings. Her feedbacks are detailed & useful. Exemplary works get extra points, is encouraging. I prefer to have the discussion questions earlier though. Requires writing & must follow the instructions. She is caring & works with you. +++
Wars of Roses, Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scots & Ann Boleyn is what drew me to this course. Love it and the instructor makes it really interesting. Fairly easy Sumer course. Discussion on execution of a king was awesome. Wish it was longer than a Pre-Session course. Highly recommended.
Wars of Roses, Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Mary Queen of Scots is why I signed up. Liked the course and wish it was longer than a Pre-Session. Discussion on execution of a king & on Oliver Cromwell was awesome. Loved the readings, instructor made it interesting. Liked the film 2. Fair amount of writing. Rarely offered!!! Highly recommended.
This class was way too much work for an elective. Dont get me wrong its an easy A but there are assignments every week which were difficult to keep track of since her due dates were all over the place. She isnt good at explaining assignments so i got an F on an annotated bibliography because i had no clue what i even was supposed to write about.
Did not expect to learn as much as I did. Great course. Instructor, unlike most, provides instructions and examples for every assignment. I really liked that. Lots of reminders. Gives useful detailed feedback. Lots of work, but gives plenty of time and chance to revise. Extra points for meeting with her; she is bright and kind. Will take again.
The course my major requirement. Glad I took it and learned about great black American women. I expected to read and write a lot because it was on autobiographies. Dr. Pierce is inspiring & encouraging & has high standards. Liked how every week she posted reminders about upcoming assignments. No excuse to miss them. Great course, will take again.
This course was extremely interesting. It is very cool that there is a course dedicated to African American women. The readings were easy reads, and interesting. All of the discussion and exams were directly based from the readings she provides you with.
Worst professor I've ever encountered at the U of A. I was in the hospital and missed a couple of assignments and Pierce would not allow me to make them up. I tried to explain that I physically could not do the work as I was in the hospital, but I ended up dropping the course. Do not take this class if you have medical problems cuz she doesnt care.
Awesome experience in this course. One of the most understanding instructors at the UA. Went to her office and explained my dilemma & she did everything to help. I enjoyed the assignments particularly the collaborative project. Good film. Highly recommend her. I will take class with her again.
Never took Online course before, but Dr. Pierce made it very easy. We had to write a short bio and in it I expressed my fears. She replied very kindly and encouraged me to meet via Zoom. Was a well-wroth course, great experience, learned a lot. I have 2 children and still managed to get an A. She inspired me. I am taking another course with her.
Enjoyed learning about my people's history. Prof. Pierce gave us great readings and I loved the discussions. Lots of work but gives extra points for good work. Very accessible instructor face-to-face and in Zoom meetings. The project on Denmark Vesey was great. Never heard of him before. I highly recommend her and her courses. You will learn a lot.
I live in Iceland and took the course online. I admit that it was a lot of readings but no weekly assignments. Usually 2-3 weeks to finish short writing assignments. Exams direct from the books. Plenty of time to complete assignments. Discussions stressful because held on Fri-Sun. I worked. Instructor awesome. I met her in Zoom. I recommend highly.
Best organized course I have ever taken online, with out helpful instructor. First time I used meeting virtually, in Zoom, and liked it. Very convenient and can meet anytime. Dr. Pierce even offered evening appointments. Will take her courses anytime, taking 1 more in this summer with her. Highly recommended
I highly recommend this professor. Class went smooth, enjoyed my presentation. Always answered my emails within 2 hrs. Explains everything in class, in d2L and in her emails. Truly nice person. I did not like the group project at all. Her lectures very interesting and lost of enlightening information on Africa. Will take again :)
This course is on Africa and hist of African Americans. I enjoyed the readings and the lectures. Not lecture heavy course though. Group project was fine and having goof partner made a difference. Instructor is simply awesome. Smart. and very caring. Gives extra points for excellent work. I recommend her and am taking a tour again with her.
Don't have much to say about the course. Was an elective for me and I just did what I could to get an A. I liked the professor. She was kind, and always gave extra points for exemplary works. I liked the discussions, they made me read carefully. I enjoyed reading on Nat Turner and Denmark Vesey. Will take course with this Prof again.
Good course, great Professor. 1 of my favorite instructor on campus. If U take a course with her make sure you meet with her. Very helpful and gives points for meeting. Has high expectations, gives a lot of works. NO heavy readings, just select ones and are worthwhile. Group project not my thing though. I am taking her summer class. Recommended.
Best Presession course I have ever taken. Amazing instructor, materials, and interesting topics we studies. Had a fun and informative final discussion & debate on whether a king should be put on trial for treason and beheaded. Perfect course with perfect instructor. Will take her classes again.
This class taught me how to read carefully and improve my writing style. Easy to communicate with professor. Always willing to explain things. I enjoyed my Zoom meeting with there, and she gave me very constructive tips on how to do my best in an online course. No prof did this for me. I learned a lot in this course. I like her and will take again.
This class was anything but easy. But Dr. Pierce was incredibly helpful. I took the 5 week course, so I know its condensed but its A LOT of reading. One reason I really appreciated this class was it gave me the opportunity to become a better writer as a historian. Feedback was always specific and she was always able to schedule time to help.
Hello. I'd say summer courses are not easy but the professor makes a difference. Dr. Pierce is very caring and gives lots of chances to students. Not big reading load, but in discussions we had to show our knowledge on 12-15 pages. She directed us to the important pages. Learned a lot in just 5 weeks. I liked the extra credit chances. Recommended.
Just do not take it.
One thing that irritated me the most is how on her syllabus, every assignment, every question, every discussion post, and even on her examples, each one had a statement of her saying "Do not email me the answers," "focus," "no personal experiences, or you lose points." I feel like I wasn't learning, she expected us to know the answer all the time.
Eye opening course. caring instructor. Group projects are not my favorites, this course has 1. I did not expects it. No heavy weekly assignments. straightforward exams, gives even page #s. Discussions okay, based on course stuff and makes me learn. Very helpful always available instructor. I took this course because my friend recommended. :)
Loved this course. Awesome readings and met my expectations. Everyone should take this course because it helps us learn about each other in this society. I loved it and decided to minor in AFAS studies. Highly recommended course.
Took this course online. 1st time and got a lot of help from instructor. Reading load okay but complex and sad topics. High expectation and had to work hard for my grade. Met in Zoom, good experience. Taking another course with Prof. Pierce now and seen no pop quiz as some say. Will take again.
Love Irish History, love the course and set up of the modules, love the instructor's hard work.
If do not like reading do not take. Six weeks of readings. I am Irish nerd so it is fine. Descent instructor. She is a historian and fun to talk to. Favorite part is reading on Daniel OConnell, Irish independence and the Parnells. Helps to know some British hist, but she provides cool documentaries if you have time to watch them. Smooth course.
I am almost graduating and finally a course on Ireland. Michael Collins, cool. My mom is Irish and am going to Ireland next summer. What I like about Dr. Pierce is how she keeps us focused on important stuff. She answered my emails fast and seems very caring. A lot to read but interesting. Will take class with her again if need a hist course.
Such a fun class. The material is very interesting. Although, she gives us tons of reading materials. However, she is super detailed on assignments and discussions. She literally gives you the page number and points out in what paragraphs you can find the answers for discussion posts. If you like history, don't hesitate to take this course with her
This course is not hard but has lots of readings and she has very high expectations. The positive things about her is that she is helpful and gives lots of chances and extra points. Answers emails very fast. Her instructions are very long but very helpful for online students. I have already signed up for her Spring hist course.
good class and good readings Did not like group work cause a horrible partner. Professor is very helpful and at the end let me do it individually. I found her polite and sympathetics. expects good work all the time and gives extra points. I learned a lot because of it though Will take course next spring cause I know her now. Recommended
Please trust the critical reviews! Dr. Pierce was extremely disrespectful when I asked her to clarify assignments. She took all semester to give some grades and the grading was inconsistent. The exams made no sense and were a waste of time. This was one of the worst professor experiences I've had which is even more challenging in an online class.
Never taken online course and found it challenging. Dr. Pierce was very kind and always helpful even to meet via Zoom. Readings interesting and learned new things about Mrs. Coretta King. I liked the exam format because we even had the page number so could study better. Group project was hard because of lazy partner. I will take her classes again.
Easy A course. Professor is organized and grades fairly. Do good in discussions and exams and you know you have an A. The textbook was easy to read but not the story on Anna Parnell. what has convinced me to take history classes with this professor is her easy attitude and willingness to listen. Extra credit too. RECOMMENDED
Graduated this semester and needed 3 credits. Not an easy breeze as reviews said. Professor makes you work hard and even group project. Actually enjoyed the group project. Exams easy. She is a great person. Met her in person. Kind, helpful, and sharp. Take the course. Extra points. I am done guys.
She is literally the worst professor I have ever had at the U of A. She doesnt have any respect for students. Her instructions or specific, but when you do them, you still get marked off for doing something wrong. She is so condescending in all of her emails and feedback on discussions, exams, and papers. Do not take any of her classes!
One of the best hist courses offered by history department this Fall. Intriguing, challenging, and eye opening. I like the teacher and her style for a seven weeks course. Answers email right away even on weekends and explains everything. As a veteran I liked her stellar organization. Highly recommended.
One of the best hist courses offered by history department this Fall. Intriguing, challenging, and eye opening. I like the teacher and her style for a seven weeks course. Answers email right away even on weekends and explains everything. As a veteran I liked her stellar organization. Highly recommended her.
The course met my expectations.I worked very hard and satisfied with my grade. Instructor was available to meet in person which was very helpful for me. I only had to buy 1 book for this course.
I highly recommend this instructor. I was sick a lot throughout the semester and because of her caring attitude I completed my assignments. She is very polite. Unlike other online course, in this course you learn a lot and discussions are not 1-2 abstract thoughts on the topics. I enjoyed the course and will take more courses with her.
This class was easy to ace so long as you put the work in. I took this class online over the winter semester so the condensed schedule made it more intense. There were two major papers, essay exams, and discussion boards which made up all the grades for the class. Trigger warning: Rape, film for exam 2.
Good course and lots of eye opening readings. Organized instructor, sincere, and helpful. Easy to earn extra points. Her constructive feedback helped me write better papers and answers in my exams. Already signed up for her spring 2020 course.
This was a winter session and intensive, 4 weeks. Very small class. Professor was very flexible about the holidays. I liked how she gave updates every week and replied to my emails in 45 minutes to 1 hour. I learned a lot in this course because of the way she set up the discussions and exams. Extra credit. Will take again. :)
AFAS304 an interesting course and I found the course material informative and easy to digest. I highly recommend this course. Instructor is one of the most caring and accessible ones . I am also taking a gen ed course with her in spring. I recommend her highly.
Just finished AFAS209. Was a great Winter session course with a caring and one of the most dedicated instructors I've had. Learned a lot about my own heritage and history. What stood out to me is the selection of readings. The are not boring. Have already signed up for AFAS210 with her. Recommended highly.
No professor has touched my life as Dr. Pierce has. Her kind and inspirational attitude and great feedback inspired me to apply to graduate school. Learned a lot in this class & also worked very hard which paid off. Learned how to write better papers. She awards every student for good work. Do not hesitate to take her class.
When signed up for the course, I thought exams would be multiple choice and short easy discussions. Found out quick that exams & discussions need reading and writing. 2 Open book exams, not timed. 1 short final paper. Have been learning, got lots of extra points for my works. All in all good course & fair instructor. Recommended
Writing TCEs is not my thing. But I like to say few things about the class. Prof. Pierce here. Most organized and smooth course ever taken at the UA. Pierce is awesome, flexible and accommodating. Learned a lot, despite being an online course. Wish the course was longer. Am graduating and do not need elective courses. But I recommend her highly.
Took a 7 week course online. Syllabus quiz is like 10 pages. Exam heavy and lots of discussion posts. Only good thing is she is a good grader and gives extra credit. Other than that she can be passive aggressive in emails
What I liked the most is how smoothly was run and accessible professor. Plus NO lectures of any kind except occasional PPT. 7 weeks with manageable reading load. No homeworks. 3 discussions and 2 exams. Writings in discussions and exams meet minimum writing requirement for GenEd course. Highly recommend and am taking AFAS 210.
One of the best professor I've had the pleasure of taking a class with. Treats her students with respect and values their success. Goes above and beyond to accommodate our needs. She puts a lot of effort into designing her class. All assignments are to challenge students and deepen their understanding. Do yourself a favor and take a class with her.
Will take classes with this instructor. Well laid out course with strong learning objectives. Exams R long but 6 days to finish it. Hard to guess the answers. Learned lots by studying for it. They R designed to deepen our appreciation of studying history. Strict on citing the sources which is refreshing. Gives good feedback. Caring instructor.
Best and most engaging history course I have ever taken at the UA, and the great instructor. Will take her courses again.
I really enjoyed this class a lot!! Very interesting history on England! Dr. Pierce responds to emails fairly quickly, supportive; D2L set up well. It's a full semester class in 3 weeks though so make sure you've got enough time to put into the class. Quite a bit of reading and writing but well worth it. I would take another class with this prof.
Took the course cause needed easy A. Not the case. You have 2 work for it. Not lots of reading, 1 group project. I sorta like the group project. Exams & discussions not easy to tackle if do not read the materials. No guess work. I do like the instructor, she gives lot of chances to earn extra points. D2L set up organized. Hard class but recommend.
1s course with Prof. Pierce and will take more. Favorite class and instructor this Fall. Organized, lots of time for exams, straight forward, available to meet. Learned a lot in this course and I liked doing the group pictorial essay, although not a fan of group projects. Don't take if you don't like to read and write.
Best course ever. Instructor gives lots of chances. Will take her courses again. She is better than a lot of my other UA online course teachers. Her feedbacks are extensive and help you how to do better later. Gives extra credit opportunities. :)
I seldom write my views on courses or teachers. Always hated history but this online course grabbed me, especially hist of colonialism and WWI. Never knew what the Germans did to Africans. She make you think critically, write clearly, understand political, economic. social consequences of historical events. Good course, but too short.
Her online class is a nightmare. Its one of the most disorganized classes I've ever been in. The guide to just take the syllabus quiz, not the syllabus, is 5 pages long. She says in the syllabus a lot about being respectful when you email her because you know she gets irate students constantly. Do not take her classes online, they are a nightmare.
1st course ever that the readings and written assignments were relevant to our current social and cultural experiences. This class made me aware of my own role in making better history. The professor approachable and respectful. Liked her D2L weekly set up & regular communications through announcements. very helpful. Will take her classes.
As a history major I appreciate the course. Super readings on Ireland and am learning a lot. I like how the course is laid out. There are 2 tests and 2 papers. Instructor is very fair in my view because allows 4-5 days to complete the exam. Open book. She is detailed oriented though. Don't take this course if you do not like to read or write.
You're essentially teaching yourself through readings with this class. Not a very organized online setup. Says she 'cares' but then gives passive aggressive and sometime straight up rude feedback on papers if you don't write exactly what she would have written. So unless you're a mind reader, expect harsh grading.
Craziest class ever taken. This professor is not only an extremely harsh grader, but comes off very rude in her correspondences. Interesting material but she makes it miserable. This class was an elective for my minor but was much harder than all of my major classes. Avoid her at all costs if you can.
First online history course and had the best experience. Love European history and Dr. Pierce made it interesting. Lots of readings and writings but you can earn lots of extra credit with a little more effort. Can earn extra points for meeting with her and writing a short bio about yourself. Highly recommend her. I am taking her summer course.
Comparative approach in this class taught me lots about African American hist. Detailed feedback helped me improve my reading and writing. D2L layout organized and easy to follow. Instructor has high expectations about following instructions. I learned a lot in this class, liked the instructor's enthusiasm and willingness to help. Recommend her.
I highly recommend this course to students who know little about African American history. Helps you understand why we still talk about race. Reading primary sources on the civil war black soldiers and Jim Crow eye opening. Prof. Pierce is helpful & understanding. Good works in this class means getting extra points. Will take her classes.
As a senior took this course to fulfill my minor. Good course, caring instructor and course put together thoughtfully. Learned good amount about why Irish people emigrated here and how badly they were treated here. No weekly assignment, worked great for me. No lectures. The film Omagh waste of time. Take the course if you get a chance, A+ course.
I have taken a few courses from her and have loved all of them. She is very caring and gives amazing feedback. She is also very specific and clear in what she wants, leaving little room for confusion. There is a lot of reading, but the assignments are straightforward and interesting. I would really recommend taking a course from her.
Taking courses online not my favorite because of needed discipline and assignments can be confusing. Have enjoyed this course cause the teacher provides lots of samples and exams are open book. The course helps us understand why race still a lingering issue in U.S. Enjoyed choice of the materials. Dr. Pierce seems firm but caring. Recommended.
I am in a fully online degree program and not foreign to how online courses work. This is my 3rd course with Dr. Pierce. Believe me learning in her class is unavoidable. If you like history and writing, take her class. If not or want easy breeze course, stay away. Enthusiasm and hard work pay off in her classes. She works hard and expects a lot.
Am a ROTC student and used to following instructions and self-discipline. One thing the course doesn't lack is instructions. With a little self-discipline I learned a lot about hist of African Americans but also wrote on an interesting figure. I reached out to Dr. Pierce a lot for guidance and she was very helpful. Got me an A and will take again.
Not suggesting that online courses are easy but taking with an instructor who has empathy and gives chances make a difference. Loved this courses's organization and clarity. Instructions, material, and feedback are among the strength of the course. Expectations are very high though. Open book exams. Will take again.
I didnt receive my first assignment grade until 2 weeks left in the semester. I spent 5 hours on the assignment to receive a 50%, and I am a straight A student so this is not a common occurrence. When I asked for help, she didnt respond for 5 days, and then eventually responded telling me to read the syllabus. Worst prof Ive had yet.
First AFAS course and 2nd time with Dr. Pierce. Readings and writings are reasonable and very understanding instructor. She took no points off for almost 2 weeks gone for my wedding. Analyzing Spartacus Slave War and Nat Turner Rebellion, then comparing them was the highlight for me. Learned in this course more than in any Gen Eds. Recommended :)
I want to say that I learned the most valuable lesson this semester. When an instructor takes the time to give feedback that even improves my performance in other courses, you know that she cares about my learning and improving my critical thinking skills. She has my 5 stars, will take more courses with this teacher without question.
Hi. I am an Irish student taking Hist 317 on Ireland. Would like to wish the best to all my classmates and my professor. I liked this class and enjoyed our online debates on history of Irish immigrants in America. I liked the textbook but not the Petticoat Rebellion. Thank you very much for the great course.
When first signed up for this Fall course I thought it would be face to face. Just before the class stated the course changed to fully online course. I was worried cause 1st online class ever. Organized syllabus and online modules. Lot of work & high expectations. But she is caring and helps a lot if you email her. I recommend her and the course.
I decided to write this review because I liked the instructor and subject of the class. Other than that it was an online course and I had to do all the works myself. No lectures posted except some PPTs and written lectures. But the course was organized, lots of helpful sources, and clear guides for exams. The instructor is very helpful. Recommended
Good luck balancing this class with others. You are graded by only a few things and these are worth most of your grade. This professor does not teach anything, you learn nothing, you are expected to read the most you will ever have to read in a class, and then she expects you to just be able to write a huge analytical paper after becoming so lost
Hardest grader I have ever had. Prepare to get ripped to shreds
1st AFAS class. Only written lectures. You have to do the reading, but many useful tips & points. Appreciated the detailed and useful feedback. Most graders don't read our works. She does and teaches how to think analytically & write clear. High expectations but givs extra points to quality work. Stay away if not into reading. I recommend her.
Interesting online course. I liked it and learned a lot about Ireland from this professor and how to write analytical essay. I will take classes with her again. Appreciated her regular communications with students. A true gem.
After completing three courses taught by Dr. Pierce, I have beyond raving reviews for her expertise, teaching methods, and course structures. Dr. Pierce provides space for academic growth and equitability. I believe these courses prepared me for graduate school. I suggest everyone enroll in a course taught by Dr. Pierce.
Dr. Pierce's classes are 10/10. She is an amazing professor and I recommend her classes to all my peers.
My favorite online course. I had hoped that I will learn a lot about my parents' home country. The professor's selection of the readings and assignments helped me to gain plenty of knowledge on Irish history, & also about the context and factors that played out in many of the uprisings. We also watched a film I never knew about. Take this course.
I truly recommend any Dr. Pierce class. She is an amazing professor and her classes are both easy and fun. This is the second class I have taken with her an I plan to take more. She offers so much extra credit it is impossible not to do well. While there are few assignments and a decent amount of reading it is not challenging at all.
My 2nd class with Prof. Pierce. Love her style for a 7 weeks course. 1 paper; wrote a lot in the exams. To understand deeply about how Ireland became a British colony & why the long road to Irish independence is through answering the exam questions. Took me 12 hrs to finish it, but she gives generous 4-5 days. Exams R open book. Caring person. :)
I agree with one of the reviewers here. She is a 10/10 and a gem. Wish more would run online courses the way she does. Smooth, informative, and meaningful assignments. They improves one's critical reading/thinking skills and ability to discern the interconnectedness of historical events. I learned that no historical event occurs in a vacuum.+++++
I like to share that as an African-American student I found this class enlightening. Am glad I signed up. A lot of writing required but the readings are very selective and not extensive. Actually writing and discussing about the historical events and their relation helped me learn. Had to work hard consistently but got an A. I recommend her class.
This professor is frustrating. The exams are excessive. The syllabus test was a joke and one of the sections even talked about how a requirement was for the professor's benefit, not the students'. She constantly makes grammatical errors in her announcements, leading to confusion, but holds us to high standards. Do not recommend for history classes.
Most informative online course I have taken so far. No weekly assignments. 2 takehome comprehensive exams and plenty of time to complete them. Hard working instructor and nice D2L set up. She grades carefully and gives great feedback which helped with my writing and analytical thinking. Am taking a summer course with her too. Highly recommended.
This history course requires reading and writing. Has very few assignments and no Group assignments. Found the materials informative. Learned lots & writing for exam questions really helped. She is tough grader & gives useful & analytical feedback. Also gives extra points for good work. Will take class with her again since I know her style now.
As a senior I thought the course would be easy breeze. Not so. While not accountable for any weekly studying, you better show your knowledge in discussions, exams, and the final paper. She grades carefully and lots of helpful feedback. I learned to focus, be analytical, and show accurate knowledge. Recommend her & the course.
Good course and very helpful instructor. She is very hard working, and gives extra points for hard work. I had no issues with the course or the instructor. I would take classes with her again, but hopefully in person. Have heard good things about her lectures.
Tough grader, detailed & accuracy oriented. Took 4 online courses b4 but never noticed my work read so carefully or receive detailed feedback. Had to work harder but oh well. Important thing I learned was swinging it not possible unless knowing my stuff. Am graduating. Recommend her. You'll learn critical reading and writing.
Don't take this class if not into reading, writing, or reading feedback. It's a reading course obviously. Have to read 3 autobios, not the whole book. Will I take classes with her again? Hmmm, probably because my writing skills has improved. 3 yrs at university and never knew how to use MLA correctly. Nobody corrected me, just wrote fix citation.
I agree with others. If not into reading autobiographies and following instructions, stay away from her class.
Decided to take this Gen Ed thinking it would be fun and interesting. Made it two days into the semester and dropped it because of how harsh the grading is and how rude the professor is. I received a 1/65 and a 1/35 on both of my assignments for the week even though I spent hours/days doing each assignment. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. hardest gen-ed of my life for absolutely no reason. professor is rude and grades harshly.
Dr. Pierce expects 3000% effort in her classes despite not being bothered to reply to emails for weeks and not understanding the concept of spell check. Dr. Pierce provides EXTENSIVE guides on how to complete assignments that are often more confusing and condescending than the original assignment. 0/10 One of the worst professors I have ever had.
Took this online summer course and learned a lot. It was my 1st A this year. Got a lot of help on how to use D2L and how to improve my analytical writing. Learned to think analytically and found idea of Double Marginalization very interesting. She is tough grader. Long exams though. Had no problems with her and I am taking her Hist 317. Recommend.
After completing three courses taught by Dr. Pierce, I have beyond raving reviews for her expertise, teaching methods, and course structures. Very student friendly. Dr. Pierce provides space for academic growth and equitability. I believe these courses prepared me for graduate school. I suggest everyone enroll in courses taught by Dr. Pierce.
Taking 2 courses with her this Fall. Haven't seen unusual conduct by her so far. Respectful, hardworking & passionate instructor. She is a historian & persists on accurate claims and analytical arguments. For asgmts, gives even the page #s and paragraphs to focus on, not full chapters. Got a chance to re-submit my 1st paper. I appreciate her.
1st class with this instructor. Loved the course and what I learned in this class. I appreciated the detailed responses to all my emails. Am taking AFAS 210 with her also.
This professor had very clear instructions for all assignments. I was highly impressed with Dr. Pierce from day one because she told us ahead of time that textbooks are required in this course. Her syllabus was extremely detailed and clear. Very precise feedback that helps the student learn. I thoroughly enjoyed learning in her course.
Am a freshman and took the course because I love reading autobios. Worked harder than expected. Dr. Pierce truly helped me improve my writing and how to articulate my knowledge and my own thoughts. Loved learning about Elizabeth Keckley and Maya Angelou and comparing their lives. Lots of extra points. I recommend her strongly.
Hist 317 is awesome and eye opening about colonial hist of Ireland and the Irish Independence movement. Liked the textbooks. Dr. Pierce emphasizes historical accuracy and helps students improve their critical thinking. I prefer fewer exams and more papers. Her passion for the subjects is inspiring. I will take her Russian hist in the Spring.
Loved the course and the instructor. In my view this professor is smart, patience, & passionately thorough. Liked the discussions because wasn't fake and just busy work like so many online classes I took. Her feedback is amazing, forces us to think deeper about the topics, and write coherently and be specific. Am graduating but I recommend her.
I dropped this course because the expectations are too high. Cannot say anything positive or negative about the instructor or the course because I dropped the class. There are extra credits in the Syllabus quiz and by meeting with her, total of 40 points. History course I guess means a lot of readings and writings. Not a course for me.
Dr. Pierce is a kind and decent professor. She puts effort in her teaching and cares about the success of her students. The only complaint I have is the excessively detailed and lengthy directions she gives for assignments and papers in her class. Not sure why the directions for writing one paper needs to be 5 pages long...
I enjoyed this class. Dr. Pierce's enthusiasm inspired me. Honestly my analytical skills have improved greatly. Her instructions R detailed. she covers every aspect of the assignment in case we need them when writing or taking exams. Provides lots of examples to help us. Her approach is impressive in my view. I will take her courses again.
Russian hist was a great course & found this professor caring and helpful. She required 3 analytical papers. My favorite was on a memoir by Anna Labzina, a Russian woman. Grader's feedbacks were detailed and helped me see what I could improve. Discussions could be shorter. Good course and will also take Part 2.
1st online course in my life. Good experience and enjoyed learning about Russia. Worked hard for my grade and extra credits helped. I liked the professor, answered my emails same day. Makes you think about what you are writing and what you are arguing. Long feedback, scary but good. Grader was good. I recommend them. :P
DON'T TAKE UNLESS YOU ARE GOOD WITH CONFUSING DIRECTIONS. She expects a lot from you but does not give the same effort. Instructions are long and erratic. She doesn't grade anything in the order that it is turned in. Grades the most recent paper and not the one I turned in a week ago. Posts are confusing because of her constant spelling mistakes.
1st African American hist course. Lots of work, but I learned a lot & improved my writing skills. Dr. Pierce provides detailed and helpful instructions (may be because its Online course). She is hard working. 1 book I had to buy; not too excited about that. I recommend her class, despite her long feedbacks.
As a hist major I appreciated the class because of her emphasis on accuracy and supported arguments. Agree with a comment below on spellings in her announcements. Nobody is immune to it anymore (auto-correct!). Our texts, emails all have it. Liked her method and all the examples she provided to help us do better. Caring teacher. I recommend her.
Very nice Russian history course. Learned a lot and liked her style of teaching. very intelligent. Would have liked more lectures. Fairly good textbooks and primary sources. Taking her part 2 of the Russian history course.
Just don't despite the reviews.
History of the Soviet Union is informative, dark, and awakening. Liked reading on Yashka and Gorbachev. He was ahead of his time. Can comfortable say that my writing in this 400 level course improved 90%. Pierce was hardworking and passionate. Had high expectation, though. Recommend her, and will take her course in spring 2024.
Best thing I liked about is the Prof's devotion to giving us interesting class materials on AFAS history and examples for every assignment. I loved the final which was a documentary video. I learned a lot by just discussing the topics orally and by using images. Got points for meeting with her online. Will take class with her gain.
Best class ever. Assignments were totally easy. I got to write my own autobiography in this class. Had to read autobiographies of 3 African American ladies and then write our own life story in 3 stages. Real cool experience. We could also revise and earn extra points. Am graduating but I recommend her class.
Hist 422 was a decent fully online class with a decent instructor. Not that many recorded lectures which did not bother me. She provided clear instructions on what to read (even which page numbers) and detailed instructions for all other requirements. Interesting stuff on early Russia. Do expect to read in this history class. Will take Hist 425.
This course was okay.
Smooth running winter class. Did not meet the instructor but seemed professional and cared about our learning and analytical thinking. Very serious about grading though; hard to BS in the exams. Discussions were different and we actually had to read what others wrote, but I sort of liked it. Recommended.
Was not too impressed. Nothing against the instructor, but just did not care for the course or the assignments.
Mary is a great person. DO NOT take her class as a GenEd: Lengthy, confusing directions Hard to reach professor Delayed grading + feedback Harsh grading even for experienced writers I have never been more stressed about a class after 3+ years of math This class needs to be your NUMBER ONE PRIORITY if taken - which is not realistic for a GEN-ED
Will take course with Dr. Pierce. Easy to communicate by email and replies fast. I walked into this course without any expectations. What I've learned about "construction of race" in 6 weeks is amazing. Feedback are detailed but helpful for improving my writing skills. Hard work pays off in this class. Thoughtful readings and documentaries.
I generally do not take the time to write online reviews. Missed the UA's review deadline. This was one of my most intellectually eye opening courses.Worth all the hard work. Don't miss out on the extra credit chances. I recommend this course.
This is great course overall.
1st hist course on Britain. Not an easy course by all means cause we studied 2 world wars, debates on veterans struggling with PTSD (called shell-shock at the time), Margaret Thatcher, and Brexit. Tough grader (accuracy and examples matter). She cares about us learning great stuff and improve our analytical thinking. Worth the money.
Hope more courses on British history are going to be offered. Loved the course, the materials, and the professor's method. My favorite was Thatcherism and Brexit. They helped me understand the 2024 election in the UK and why Conservatives lost. I liked her.
This Russian history course was engaging, with detailed feedback and helpful resources like the textbook. The professor's instructions were sometimes unclear, but using tools like unstuckstudy ai for study prep made the workload manageable. Overall, a solid class.
I've always liked Dr. Pierce and have taken 1 other class with her. Dropped this course. Could not do the assignments because did not get the textbooks, my bad. Will take 317 next semester. This is not an easy class to swing it. If you like good feedback take her courses.
Some of the formatting and expectations for assignments were confusing, and this is a very writing-heavy course. You buy the textbooks only to use them to read just a couple of paragraphs here and there which feels like a waste of money. I don't feel like I learned much which is unfortunate.
Dr Pierce makes sure you are on your A game with remembering historical events, and analyzing how slavery happened throughout the world. The discussions and other assignments have to be great quality and she makes sure you read specific sections of the assigned readings. Answers have to be worded to her liking, but this course made me write better.
I loved this class. Learned a lot about why reading autobiography written by women is important particularly if we want to understand how double discrimination happens. Expectations in this class are high but you will get better at writing. That's for sure. Good course.
I took a chance with this 7 weeks course. It turned out good. Irish history is interesting. The instructor did a lot of work to make it interesting by giving us good questions and reading. The book was hard to find. We didn't have to read the whole book. I am taking another course with her.
Good course. Highly recommend. I learned how 2 identify double discrimination by using frame of intersectionality, the differences between autobiography and memoir, and finally after 3 years in college I now know how to use MLA citation correctly. Thanks to GWS 306.
Hist 317 is nice course and the professor makes it even more interesting. My writing has improved a lot in this class. It is all reading and writing. I love reading. Learned a lot about Brexit. I recommend.
I am GWS major and loved the course and the women's autobiographies we read. Writing my own autobiography was refreshing. Dr. Pierce was very skilled in guiding us through the whole project. Stress free online course. :P
This was one of my favorite history courses. I learned a lot about history of modern Russian. Interesting readings and videos. had not read anything by Stephen Kotkin. Hard working teacher. I recommend this course.
This was an online course and needed a lot of self-discipline. Never met the instructor but she was caring and presented exciting stuff on Russian history. Great online course all around.
testing test
I liked the overall topics we studied. The teacher provided very interesting materials even dissecting supreme court cases. I am graduating.
I don't have anything against the instructor because she gives a lot of chances. I am graduating next month, and just had no time for following the instructions in this course or studying all the readings. I don't need to take a course to learn about the French Revolution.
There were exactly 7 assignments so each mattered a lot. Her instructions were OVERWHELMING, redundant, and so super specific that your answers had to be impossibly precise with no creativity allowed. Each assignment took hours to complete over 2-3 days. Don't take this class as a senior. It will stress you out more than necessary.
Overwhelming and exhaustive guidelines, so rigorous you have no room for creativity in this course. Must write with extreme precision to a tee or else you will be docked points. Unbelievably frustrating and discouraging as a student. My experience was disappointing and stifled my creativity, as any answer other than what she wanted was incorrect.
Enjoyed the readings because of different perspective on the topics we studied. I liked analyzing the court cases the best. Loved the professor's attitude towards substantiated arguments. Hard working. The guides could be shorter but helpful for people like me who need detailed instructions. This was my 2nd course with her. I recommend her.
After completing 3 courses taught by Dr. Pierce, I have beyond raving reviews for her expertise, teaching methods, course structures & materials, and emphasis on details as well as accuracy. Very important in a history course, & in this age of misinformation. Her courses and methods have prepared me for graduate school. I highly recommend her.
Not a history buff, but this class is intellectually engaging. Loved learning about Napoleon's bloodless coup and why, a fact I didn't know. Had 5 assignments total (without syllabus quiz). No papers. Facts and backed with evidence arguments are paramount as in all hist courses. Enlightening online course and informed professor. Recommended.
I dropped this course. It is heavily based on reading and writing only. I am a senior and had no time for this. The course is very interesting and the teacher seems nice.
So I found out that most things I knew about the French Revolution and Napoleon were untrue. Enjoyed this class and its instructor. Great written lectures with voice over. Helpful and anlytical. I am taking Hist 306 hist with her this semester. Caring and informed instructor.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Her instructions are confusing and lengthy. The syllabus quiz instructions were 10 pages. The midterm instructions, 19 pages with MANY errors and rules. Took her 20 days to grade an assignment. Everything has to be worked on over the weekend, as she doesn't open anything until then. Drop her class is in your cart. ASAP
Don't use AI in this class. Good course to take. Lots of great reading materials and 2 short paper. No weekly quizzes or anything. Gives extra points for quality works. I learned how to write and answer questions in exams and discussions in this class than any class I took before. Highly recommended. Caring prof.
I recommend her. I liked that I don't have to read and take quizzes weekly. There are 2 comprehensive exams and very very very long ones. I liked the freedom in between the exams. You learn a lot from her feedback and how to write.True, no AI because you get no points.
My favorite history courses in a while. You will learn a lot about the French Revolution, the king, the Queen Antoinette, and the radical revolutionaries. Very Interesting readings and videos. Liked her organized and easy to follow PPTX style lectures. We have 1 short analytical paper only. Highly recommended.
Took this course as my last Gen Ed. It is a good course with lots of great information on African nations. Have no complaint and am graduating. We wrote no papers in this class except a short 3page one at the end. I recommend this instructor, and it was my 3rd course with her.
This was my first critical race theory class, and I passed with flying colors. History is generally a challenging subject for me, but with this professor, critical thinking is more important than remembering facts, figures and dates. The discussions have to be written in a specific format and style, and the quizzes are long, but, it's worth it.
I learned a lot from this professor, in previous courses. Dr. Pierce makes learning history both interesting and easy. When answering questions for the discussions and quizzes, accuracy, clarity and critical thinking are of the utmost importance. We covered very few Black women's autobiographies in the course, but overall it was worthwhile.
The reviews are from her aids. I got an A but it was the most stressful class I have taken. She takes 20 days to grade, she will change a failed grade to an A if you complain. lol She has 28 question quizzes, essay questions. Only wants you to regurgitate what she has written. I do not recommend her, the lack of communication is the worst.
The professor's instructions were unclear, making assignments difficult to understand. Feedback was discouraging rather than helpful, and clearer, more supportive teaching is needed to improve the course.
