Took Bio10 last semester. Pretty laid back class. She gives lectures every day that are also posted on her website for future reference. You don't need the textbook at all. She's kind of funny, always perky, and helps you out on tests. There are 5 tests I think and 100 questions on each one which is a lot compared to other GE classes. Overall Ok.
It's a lower division GE, so don't expect extremely in-depth biology. General concepts, and she uses PowerPoint lectures. She used a "clicker" device, in which you respond to a question on her PowerPoint slide for points. Extremely easy questions as she asks something she lectured about 10 seconds prior, yet some kids still managed to miss. Easy A.
pretty chill class. easy A if you put a little effort.
easy A. all lecture are from ppt and are on her website. gives a TON of extra credit. uses a clicker device to answer "quiz" questions during lecture. 4 tests, 75 questions each 1.5 points per question which could give you 12.5 points extra credit if you get 100%, 150 question final. easy 4 page research paper also.
It was a pretty easy class, all you have to do is study the notes she gives you and you will be good. She also gives a ton of extra credit so definietly pretty easy class; just study and do the work.
class was very very easy. book not needed - do not buy it. i got an A+ in the class. she provided study guides for each exam. Final exam not cumulative. VERY EASY A. Highly recommended.
great teacher, young and fun. come to class to get participation points. don't buy the book, just use the internet.
She is a great instructor. She is very young and fun. Labs take a while to complete but the class is easy. If you are taking bio take it with her.
Funny. Teaches well. Gives you the slides online, but even if you don't print out the slides, she's easy to understand. The labs took for everrr but were easy. The book isn't necessary but nice to have. "Now an easy way to remember mitosis from meiosis is, 'my TOES don't have sex'. Not that I'm judging...I don't know what your toes do..." Awesome.
the texy book is not needed for this class. All test are on her power point lectures
definitely recommended!! amazing teacher! i have never been good at science but she was great at explaining things, giving examples, and making the students understand. so nice too, always wanting to help people.
Don't need the book. She has power points that you can print from online. DO THE STUDY GUIDES AND STUDY them & any worksheets! Most of the answers are there, ask her if you can't find them! Don't slack on the research project. Her tests are basically on her slides, so again STUDY! You can get an A if you try hard. She also offers some extra credit!
Easy class. Professor is enthusiastic and interesting. Labs are a drag but a lot of them can be done at home.
She's a doll. Young, I'd say late 20's. She's very peppy and has lots of jokes. Very easy to approach.More like having an awesome tutor than a typical professor. I definitely recommend her. I hate bio and she made it fun!
if u hate biology then this class is boring as hell! plant and bird quizzes are super hard and pop quizzes are random at times. exams are alright
How hard can a sort of intro to biology class be right? WRONG. She WILL make you work for your grade. She expects you to go to every class and rewards you for it with a likely test question/answer. If you've taken bio classes before, the material will seem a bit redundant & you will find yourself looking at the clock every 10 minutes in this class.
She is really hard and expect you to go to every class. She is the wrost teacher ever at SJSU.
Professor Poffenroth actually kept my attention. I am not very interested in the sciences but she actually helped me understand and somewhat enjoy biology. Her tests are extremely fair. She is always open to questions and enjoys speaking to students after class if you want clarification.
Interesting class, and pretty easy. We just hearing the name "biology" me freaked out, but take it from someone who does not enjoy science that much...this class is not that bad! The professor is chill too most of the time and just have monday morning open note quizzes for attendance and 2 midterms and a final..all with study guides provided,Easy!
I loved going to this class. It wasn't as hard as I expected. We never went into detail one anything, just a brief understanding. You don't need the book, she has ppt slides online. But you need a click for class participation. Start your paper early, put effort into it, and you'll get an A. 4 exams, all MC. Simple course, a must take.
Best science teacher I ever had. Made the class enjoyable. Everything is easy as long as you pay attention and do the work.
Class is simple. Lab is walk in and workbook based. Lecture is power point. There's an open note quiz every Monday so before to be on time and have your clicker ready. Prof really hates it when students leave lecture after quiz. Sometimes she makes questions that is not in the ppt.
Her class was interesting and not boring for me at all. She is always happy and if you pay attention in lecture then you actually enjoy it! Slides, study guides, everything! is online so the class is made easy. If you don't do well in this class you need to study harder!
Really great professor. She made lectures interesting and gave us her lecture slides for us to study from. Provided study guides and didn't need the book. Little and easy assignments. Gives 5 midterms but they're pretty easy as long as you do the study guide.
teacher very inconsiderate and teaches based on personal opinion
dont need the book if you go to lectue and pay attention and take notes you'll do good, labs are tedious and long and lab quizzes are the hardest part of the class, besides that if you too biology in highschool is basically all review. easy to do good in the class but need to attend because of random in class quizzes. but she extremely sarcastic-_-
I really liked this professor / class. She was extremely helpful throughout the semester. The textbook isn't necessary as long as you show up for lectures and take notes (she also posts them online.) theres 3 exams, group project, community service, and a research paper. She also gave a lot of in-class extra credit!
Her class is very straight forward. You don't need the book at all, all her exams and clicker quizzes are based on lecture/powerpoints she puts online. Get your clicker before class session begins, they sell out fast! There's only 1 paper, and she grades easy. The labs aren't too difficult, but will take some time.
Very good teacher. Funny too. Explains everything very thoroughly. Very approachable. A lot going on at once though..group project, research paper, community service, there's a field trip too. But overall worth it and a fun class. Fair grader. Exams are easy if you study/come to class
Great teacher! Uses powerpoints for lectures and posts them online to study off. Don't need a book. No homework. The tests are pretty hard but if you study and show up to every lecture, you'll do fine. Also gives out exam questions in class so go. Not many in class assignments. We had to go to the Cal Academy of Sci on our own as a field trip.
a lot of exams but as long as you pay attention and study the powerpoint notes, you will do fine. we don't use books at all and she is funny at times
For someone like me who hates science, the class was relatively easy. You need to show up to lab (so find a buddy) and everything is pretty straight forward. Probably the simplest science class on campus. Poffenroth is nice too.
Great teacher. I learned a lot. I guess you could consider her easy, but it's mostly because she's simply a good teacher that cares about her students understanding. Don't SLACK on the essays. There's 2. Go to class because she tells might ask what happened during that class day on a quiz. ( She does it pretty often. )

Awesome teacher. Super down-to-earth and real. This was kind of a review course for me, but I know it would be easy even if it's fresh material for you. No textbook, all the powerpoints are posted online. You DO have to go to class though, she does "checks" aka pop quizzes and mini writing assignments (all easy). Good teacher overall.
I love her personality! She's quite funny and her powerpoints are helpful. She actually makes biology interesting to me. She gives pop quiz every week with open notes so make sure you're in class. Her exams consists of multiple choices so they're fairly easy if you study. As long as you pay attention and review her notes, you'll do great! :D
So she is good and all but you have to do plenty of work to maintain an A. She makes you do community service, and a journal review project (10 journal articles + review/summary) as side projects besides the HW and Quiz. I felt like this class was more of an English class than bio. Congrats if you like English, otherwise it sucks.
She is a really good teacher. She knows the material well and she is passionate about what she does. Theres a pop quiz every week so you should go to class and her class basically consists of lecture slides. There are two big papers and her exams are hard but if you follow the study guide and read the book you should be fine. She's really nice!
Super funny. Make sure you come to class because she rewards students who do by giving them test questions and even final exam questions if the attendance is low enough.
She is an ok teacher. Pretty much you go to class, you get a good grade. MUST DOO ALL LABS. Only thing i hated was that she gives pop assignments, and quizes that were hardly mentioned in the syllabus so dat lost me a lot of points. Fell asleep in almost all lectures
I loved her. Made Bio easy to understand for someone who has no interest in bio. It's a lot of work, but you'll actually learn stuff.
Ran a hybrid course, online homework with lectures. Lectures did not go the full class period and let us out early. Very clear, easy to talk to, and helpful. Ran the class very well.
Very rude and difficult to work with. NEVER told us what chapters the 2 midterms were on, and refused to provide a study guide. Had outrageous deadlines, and was overall a poor quality teacher. Wish I could have dropped the class after I started taking it. AVOID HER.
She is an AMAZING teacher! She loves what she teaches, and makes it easy to learn if you don't like science. Pop quizzes once a week (but you get 1 sheet front and back of notes). Labs are mandatory and easy. She seems a little intimidating, but is very nice and approachable. She's funny too! The text was used a secondary resource (slides are key!)
For some reason, a lot of people like this professor. If you don't need Bio21 for your major, take another class for your lab requirement. Not a great professor, rambles on, terrible review sheets.
A lot of work (should be 4 units) with 2 quizzes a week (lecture + lab), 3 exams, 2 writing assignments, extra assigned reading/videos, 1 xc opp. Sometimes test/quiz ?s were unclear and hard to challenge with ~400 students in class. Overall, fair but cannot slack at all ~ you will work to keep an A in this class but learn a lot in the process.
The class does take quite a bit of work. The exams are difficult unless you study a week or so in advance. You have to do the lab to pass the class, and you need to attend class because of potential quizzes every week. I would recommend taking Mary as a professor.
She is probably the best teacher I had this year. She was sweet, kind, and gentle.
She is a very kind professor. The class isn't an easy A, you definitely have to work for it and study for quizzes and exams. I sought her help during office hours and she helped me on my essay. I got an A on the second essay (had C on the first). Overall, I did well because I tried. You earn your grade. She is organized and grades fast.
I had Poffenroth in the Fall and she was an easy professor. Her homework was online, most were very easy, multiple choice questions. Her tests were basically the hmk & lectures. She would occasionally make or give out test answers to people who attend her lectures. She did have one major essay due by the end of the semester. Good professor overall!
Took her for summer session and she was able to run an online class really well! Reasonable workload, fair grader, and very quick and responsive to emails. Exam questions are all from lecture and homework, no textbook is needed. She seems like a very knowledgeable person, I highly recommend taking her for BIOL10! :)
Her class was okay. The labs were tedious and the textbook didn't really help. She goes through the lectures really fast but she does post the lecture slides online. There are weekly quizzes and lab quizzes. The tests are kind of hard. There also is a big writing project.
I never went to class because it was pointless. All lecture notes are online and she skips through powerpoints in class anyways so it's a waste of time. Worst professor I've ever had, sad to say.
Class overall was pretty easy. Even though she does not take roll, she does in class assignments a lot and those really add up. Tests are okay, just make sure to review slides and know the information she tells you to know (I got B's). Always check canvas for announcements she puts a lot up. Easy to approach, and is very fast at replying to emails.
Huge workload, straight to the point. My only problem with her was when it came to the research paper. I think she should grade them instead of ISA's. They all grade differently and its annoying! I got a very low score and asked her to take a second look, she looked over my works cited and said my grade was fair, I guess content was not important!
Cant miss class since there are random pop quizzes and she gives out take home worksheets when there is low attendence. 3 exams 1 paper lab every week. 400 people in the class but she is very organized and easy to get ahold of via canvas/email. Exams are kind of hard, you will need to study but she does provide a study guide all powerpoints online.
If you aren't good at managing your time well, do not take the online class. You need to make sure you're caught up on lecture videos, homework and other assignments she has. Be warned if you're taking the online class, you have to sign up for proctoring which is like $23 a test. I wish she used the lockdown app like other teachers...
She is a reasonable professor. Just make sure to go to class in order to complete the in class quizzes. Her exam are pretty easy if you study her guide. It does involve a lot of work including: lecture quizzes, lecture exams, some handout activities, labs, and lab quizzes.
lecture is something that you must attend, the labs are a pain and long. I ended up with a C and I actually tried really hard. shes a pretty hard grader when it came to our essays,
If you do not want a lot of work/stress do not take this class! You need to make sure you are caught up on lecture videos, homework and other assignments she will add, she is pretty unorganized. For tests, you must sign up for proctoring which is about $30 a test. Her assignments are also pretty unclear and very time consuming. Do not take this.
A lot of tedious work, most students don't feel like doing all the work. If you don't need the class don't take it, it's not worth all the work.
I don't understand what other people have been talking about this class. It is one of the best science classes to take. The labs are long unless you're willing to do at least some of the work at home before coming to lab. Go to every lecture class as you may be having pop quizzes. She shows an interest in helping her students.
Super easy class. I feel like this is freshman bio in hs. Literally evrything she says in class is on the test+pop quizzes. No surprises. Clear w instructions+always updates canvas. Lab quizzes, just reread the lab. Only thing is the exam has q's from the book, which I never open. Got B's on tests, just went to lecture and reread notes+the paper sux
I felt as if this class is just like high school bio. This is an easy class as long you go to lecture and be on top of the lab work and other class activities plus pop lecture quizzes. Highly recommended.
This is a science class easier than most that goes over the general basis of Human Biology. No tricks, no hard theories, just a refreshment of high school biology. And to that, take this class!
The class is not particularly hard but could be considered challenging for freshmen. There are a lot of moving parts and you will need to constantly check online for updates. It would be easiest to get a lab that was done from someone in a previous semester to save time. Light studying is necessary. Not suggested for the procrastinators.
easy class if you attend and do every single assignment. her voice is sexy and the summer session wasn't hard at all, just do labs early
Lets you out early. Don't bother buying the book, just the online access code. Content is pretty basiceasy to understand. Doesnt expect you to know things too indepth. Pretty friendly. Canceled class semi often.
millions of pop quizzes and too much work for a 3 UNIT GE CLASS!!!!!!
Took this course over the summer and I really enjoyed it. There was a fair amount of work because it was condensed to 5 weeks. Do any work you can at home before going to lab and you don't need to spend a lot of time in the lab. She is a fair grader, but is big on spellinggrammar. I would definitely take one of her classes again!
12 lecture quizzes, 12 lab quizzes, 2 mid-term (75), 1 final (100) 1 paper (5 pages), early attendance is compulsory to take exams. With the same effort to get an A in this class, you would get double A in other two classes. I hate this class much.
Online class--no textbook. Teacher responds to emails quickly, TA didn't respond at all. TA grades assignments. Pretty easy grader (if you do the assignment you should get an A). Midterm and Final are kinda hard. Had an A forever until the midterm then had a B. No percentages--point based only. Don't ever have to look at the lectures to pass.
Good professor. Do good on the labs and quizes and go to class and you will pass. It's work but you can do it if you try and care
She makes this class extremely organized. It's almost a little overwhelming the amount of information she gives you for just one assignment so she doesn't get bombarded with her student's questions. I got a C in the class only because I believe if it was later class it'd be a lot easier. Attendance matters if you want a good grade.
She teaches all of the material you need to know through online lecture slides. She is very clear on what she expects. She definitely cares about how her students do in class. Definitely a lot of information, so study! She doesn't give a lot of time on exams to go back and look at your notes, so be sure to know the material. I would take her again!
I struggled with this class a lot. Midterms brought down my grade the most. Huge workload. If you skip class, you might miss in-class assignments. i personally, would not recommend it.
Get ready for a ton of audio lectures from her and other professors, power points galore, and long papers.
The class Bio 21 is basic human biology. Ms. Poffenroth does a good job in explaining concepts, and her voice is sexy. The labs can be long. So I suggest doing them on day and taking the test the next day. That way you have time to study the Lab book. For the test you must do the study guide in order to do well. In the end, it's an easy class
My peers and I would grumble about the amount of work required in the class sometimes, but really I appreciated her organization and straightforwardness in class structure. I always knew what to expect, very refreshing compared to other professors. Didn't have much of an interest in biology, but teaching was very straight-to-the-point. Great class.
She was very straight-forward and detailed. You will do well in this class if you are organized and a hard-worker. Her tests were pretty difficult for me, but with extra credit and doing well on labs and research assignments, I still got an A-. Textbook was not mandatory.
I'll be brief. If you're a hard worker and maybe not the brightest, you can get an A. If you are bright and think that you can work around this class, stop yourself right there. I am very involved on campus and it was impossible to leverage orgs, work and all my other classes. I got a D. This is coming from an A & B student.
Popquizzes every/other week at the VERY beginning of class. If missed, you cannot retake them; the lowest score is dropped. A HUGE paper broken into sections over the course of 2 months. She has a clear teaching style with some humor. She does sometimes brag about life but she is sweet. The labs are time consuming but easy. Everything uploaded day1
She has a sense of humor. She explains her lecture note specifically. Long but easy lab every week; and yeah, you also have lab quiz every week. I did not do well on my midterms, but I still got B-. If you work pretty hard, you may get an A.
If you are looking for an easy A general education class, then do not choose this course. Bio21 is a very rigorous course, and since it includes a lab, the class is a lot of work. Along with pop quizzes and tough tests you must work very hard for a good grade in the class. However, it is possible to get an A if you work for it and do extra credit.
I do not recommend. In all honesty you may work your hardest & still not earn the grade you really deserve. Class will leave you with headaches.
I don't know if she's a Biology teacher or an English teacher. She grades us based on grammar, which is really weird. The class is very basic and the content is very easy. 3 exams, one research paper, one field trip, and lots of hw. She gives extra credit as well. Just make sure you use good grammar in all of your assignments.
Took it online and there is lot of homework, due weekly. Grading is fair. Basic format:weekly homework, 1 quiz, 1 midterm, 1 research paper, 1 online presentation, journals on entire book on a book named Mean Genes, Final, and you cannot escape from reading it since there are lot of midterm and final que's from this book. Don't really need textbook
There was 2 exams 1 final. Labs every week aside from a couple take home. 1 essay that is fairly easy because she breaks it down into small steps. Attendance is mandatory because there are pop-quizzes and labs. Her course is very well organized and clear, very little room for excuses. I would suggest to not take her if you like to procrastinate.
Though she is helpful, THIS IS TOO MUCH WORK FOR A GE COURSE. My upper divisions are even more relaxed. She acts as though this is the only class we have. Always does a lecture right before exam day and puts that on the test. Hard when balancing harder classes. Take this your first year and get it over with if this is a required course.
I HATE THIS CLASS! This professor is annoying and expects for the class to remember EVERY single thing that she assigns. Like come on, we have other classes to focus on as well. Too much work for this to be a 3 unit GE class. There are weekly quizzes in lecture and in lab. All three exams were VERY HARD. There's just too much to remember :(
The was probably the worst class I have taken this semester and I do not recommend at all ! It is not worth taking for only 3 units, the professor expects you to be just like her, she thinks pretty highly of her self. I wasted money on her book which we barely used , she should have not made us buy it. It did not have much to do with the class.
This class was kind of a joke. I didn't learn anything, but that's because I've taken similar classes. Everything was easy and I don't think I listened to a single lecture and managed to pass with an A. THE TEACHER DOES NOT GRADE YOUR ASSIGNMENTS, IT'S JUST PASSED THROUGH TURNITIN. I've written some crazy stuff in them and still full credit.
Worst professor ever, unfortunately there are no other professors that teach bio21. Her class is only 3units and she assigns so much workload. Her exams are difficult and consist of information she never taught. This class was seriously a waste of time. This was her last time teaching Bio 21 so lucky for you if you have not taken her course.
Although this was indeed a tough class that required extra studying, I found it clear and enjoyable! Professor Poffenroth is passionate about the subject and her overall work. This sem, we got the chance to watch lectures online, so you didn't have to come to the 8 am lectures. There will be lecture quizzes and lab quizzes, so study notes!
Beaware of what's due on what day. Be sure to study before your midterms and Final. Labs can get overwhelming sometimes, so try to complete as much as you can at home. Check Canvas every single day for what's due, especially if you choose not to go to Lectures. Read the material twice and you are certain to get a B. Dont forget to do your papers!!!
Mary is sincerely a respectable professor, yeah sure, there is a lot of work she puts on you but she explains what you have to do clearly. Swing or miss. Honestly just do the work and study every chance you get, I made the mistake not to and paid for it. She will help you if you approach her after class or by email, she genuinely cares.
Weekly writing assignments that usually require watching a video (5-60 mins). Class is on subjects such as eating healthy, drug abuse, disease, or "alternative" medicine. Some silly assignments such as filling out forms and drawing. At end of semester you need to make a 10 minute video presentation on a powerpoint topic you research on your own.
This class is really easy as long as you do the work on time. There are many online video assignments from 5-60 mins and her lectures are about 45 minutes long. The two biggest assignments in this class are a research paper and a 10 minute video presentation on a chosen topic. It's overall an easy class with a lot of boring, busy work.
You have to make sure to do ALL of the homework. Even if it's not your best, it doesn't hurt to have something in. As long as you do it all, you should end up with an A or A- in the class. I personally did not do the extra credit and still received an A.
She's a good professor and her online class is definitely an easy A. The class is a lot of busy work but as long as you attempt it and turn it in on time you will get an A. The biggest projects in this class are a research paper and 10-minute video presentation (both on the same topic that you sign up for).
Here's the thing. It's not too hard to get an A, but you have to do the work. She assigns a lot of work, which aren't necessarily difficult, but definitely time consuming. Overall, the class isn't hard, just a lot of work.
The online class is pretty straightforward every week she assigns 4-5 assignments that are really easy but they take up some time. If you do all of them you should at least get an A in this class assuming you don't fail the tests. There is one midterm, the final, a research paper, and a project. Do the hw and don't fail the tests and youl get an A
Lots of time consuming homework, but it's all manageable. If you complete everything on time, it'll be an easy A - easy life. Prof is very responsive. Lessons are basic and easy to understand. Extra credit available. Short video presentation, one essay, many discussions and assignments. I actually enjoyed the class and learned something. TAKE IT
I loved this class because the professor does care about you. Although, there was a lot of homework for this course. She's an easy grader, and offers extra credit. You get to learn more about biology.
There is extra credit in the class but I honestly hated this even though it was online. The work load is so intense , the amount of work she can give you in a week is a lot and there is no slacking. I honestly would not recommend this class, I found it highly stressful and too much work for a ge class.
Heavy Workload lots of weekly online hw. Barely kept my A by the end. Professors loves to make meaningless weekly videos just to hear herself talk. Worst Prof at SJSU.
3 Midterms, 1 Final, 1 6-8 page paper, weekly homework, and lots of small reports and weekly assignments. Stay Away if you care about having time for other, actually important, classes. God forbid a nonmajor has time to complete their core requirements and has take this class.
The work load for this class is not doable if you have other classes. Even though winter courses are fast paced, this class has anywhere from 7-10 assignments due each day (and they are time consuming). Take something else to fulfill your area E...
Poffenroth was a great teacher as she sent weekly updated videos regarding what is due throughout the week. There are 3 exams and one quiz; the exams are mostly not too difficult if you take notes and watch the extra videos. There is also an assignment to go to either the California Academy of Science Museum or Monterey Bay at the end of the sem.
Despite the fact that there are assignments due every week, I think the workload is pretty doable if you take her during regular semester (fall & spring). I had 16 units in total last semester and still manage to get A in this class. This class will is not that hard as long as you do the work, take notes for lecture notes.
*CLASS IS Global Studies 1B* (no code for this class). Easy GE course with 2 exams, 1 paper, and a group project. The group project is annoying since this class is meant to be an online class but luckily we only had to meet once. Weekly update videos and answers her emails ASAP.
She is a kind of teacher that tries to listen and learn from her teaching style about in what ways students can learn the best. She used to have Proctor U for taking exams, but many does seem to like it then she removed this policy but rather to have the exam timed and shows only 1 question at a time. She is also really responsive with emails!!
This is my second class with her. She is awesome as she tries her best to let students participate and work in groups even though is an online class. The entire class is really interesting as you get to learn and see things from different perspectives. There are HWs due every week, but you get to view things from different perspective.
This course is all on Canvas; 5 weeks long. reading all 15 chapters is done on JoVE with a 10q quiz after each chapter. HW is usually reading an article/watch vids and ans questions. 1 major writing assignment on endangered species; 1 field trip assignment (waste of time and $). 3 online exams, questions are redundant, and you can use google.
She gives so much work, but I still chose to have her again for another, harder bio online class. It is too easy to pass online classes, but you just need to do her work. Everything is always due on Friday and it piles up. I was always so annoyed and I might drop my class with her. The first week back and we have 6 assignments?
Great teacher, very passionate about her studies. Lots of assignments but all are straightforward and simple to complete. One of the most interactive and interesting classes I've taken, even for an online class. There are some fun assignments like a field trip and a PSA video too. Lots of room for creativity and critical thinking. Easy A. No books.
Pretty easy online class. Nothing special, though. My complaints were that some assignments would take way longer than others and be worth the same amount of points. And she would dock points on things like term paper and not tell you why. I even emailed asking, and was told that I would have to schedule a meeting to go over it if I wanted to know.
Best teacher to take for bio 10. There was lots of hw, but it's a good class to take if you need this class for GE. She was the best teacher, and has nice response awards your emails if you have questions or Concerns. Things to know to pass the class: 2 Exams, Jove Core Quizzes, 1 Paper, Some Side-HW, a Self-Guid Field Trip, & the Final.
Took this class for winter. I wanted to dislike this professor before taking the class, but I ended up doing well. I thought it was going to be unreasonable based on the previous comments. It's not hard, BIO10 is BIO10. If you manage your time and not do things last minute, you will get an A+. Very responsive to canvas message and genuinely cares.
Took her BIO10 online class; loved it. Very organized, she gets back with emails really fast and is a good lecturer. Textbook is online and provided free for students; most weeks, one chapter of the textbook reading and quiz is due every Friday; besides that there are other assignments on Canvas due Fridays too. 1 major research paper; 3 exams.
This isn't a self pace class however if you manage your time and get things done at the end of the week you will be fine.
I took the online class, it's easy. Just stay on track and get assignments done it time. She's a helpful prof.
the assignments are very easy but time-consuming. if you do them and score okay on the two exams and final paper, you'll get an A.
I took this course as a winter course (3 weeks), instead of a regular semester. During this time, assignments and quizzes are due at the end of every week, so make sure you are completing assignments on time instead of waiting last minute. Overall, she is very lenient with grading, you just need to make sure that you do well on exams and assignment
I took her asynchronous online class version in the winter semester. Her lectures are amazing, and exams not exact regurgitation of course material. She's a very passionate and inspirational professor. She makes learning interesting and wants students to apply biology in real life. Only one needs to complete their work on time and be respectful.
Took this in the winter. As long as you pace yourself and do well on the exams, essay, and presentation you should be fine. Given the current circumstances, she was understanding and made some assignments extra credit instead. My only issue is that many of the assignments were worth 5-10 pts but took too much time to finish.
Considering that this is an intro to bio class, the professor wants you to know SO MANY THINGS! Her requirements for papers are couple of pages long and you have to do EXACTLY as she says: weird citation format, weirdly specific requirements, kinda hard for an intro class. Her Canvas is a mess - I'm always afraid I missed some assignments
Aot of busy work but it's the same for every chapter so you know what's expected. Decent teacher didn't really meet her bc no lectures. Every week you do JOVE notes, a quiz, and a class discussion post. 1 major writing assignment. 3 exams and 1 Final. Offers extra credit. Towards the end of the semester, she gives a lot of quizzes. OK GE class
Take this class for GE requirement, but her course is so heavy. You should be ready to spend a lot of time on her assignments. It's even heavier than my major classes.
Professor Poffenroth was by far one of the best professors I've had so far. She is extremely kind and accommodating, as well as being super passionate about what she teaches. The workload was manageable and the exams were easy if you studied lightly. I highly recommend this class for anyone trying to finish their GEs.
She is a decent Professor just put in the work and all will be fine. Her endangered species paper is annoying because it is in CSP format style. There are 3 exams, weekly quizzes, and lots of module stuff. So long as you pay attention you good. What was kinda weird though was many outside videos were about her.
Exams had a lot of questions that weren't brought up in class modules, so luckily she allowed open Internet on exams. Many questions can be found through Google. Paper isn't hard, but the citation format she uses is annoying. Overall, the class is easy, but definitely has to restructure some things to make things more consistent.
I took her fully asynchronous class. Assignments were a time-sink, but if you can get past that it's an easy A+. Midterm and final consists of basically only surface level questions you can find if you take notes watching her video lectures (open-note exams, btw). Pretty big time-sink if you procrastinate, but ezpz otherwise.
Take this class if you want an A and if you want to learn new things! All you need to do is complete assignments every week, a standard paper, and 2 exams. Homework was not as tiring or difficult to accomplish as some other reviews mention as long as you don't wait till the last minute! Plus Ins Poffenroth is friendly and easy to approach
Nice enough, but doesn't pay attention to what you're actually saying when you ask questions. In-class group assignments, 300-word reading reflections twice a week, a final paper + presentation, and yet another group project with confusing instructions at the end of the semester when you think you're finally done. Absolutely would not take again.
It's a nice GE class if you like writing. Not many tests/quizzes and Professor is very nice.
This course was very educational and informative as you watch her lectures and do assignments. This course is structured to prepare students to be responsible and organized so don't leave the assignments until the last minute. Follow this tip and you should be good. She is very caring as she provides a lot of helpful resources for students.
Bio54 with her online is a must take. The work that is given isnt hard, but it is very time consuming. 4-5 assignments a week ranging from 200-400 words each. But overall recommend.
This class isn't difficult, not very time consuming either if you speed run everything. Everything including exams are searchable so it's free. Only thing that took a bit of thinking and time was the term paper which has a format requirement as well as a requirement for credible sources. She got discord, nice, caring, and responds fast to questions.
I took this class asynchronously. The weekly workload was rather tedious but not difficult. Some of the material felt mildly preachy. There was one essay and a 10-minute video, both on the same topic. The class was easy, but also quite dull.
I had this class asynchronous and it really accommodated my schedule. The workload is a lot but not difficult and could be time consuming. I completely enjoyed this class and appreciated the professor as she was understanding if you just communicate. She has 3 main projects that are on the same topic so if you do take her class be prepared for it.
Unrealistic amount of work given to the students during winter break. There were stoms and evething but she still did not care about it. If its the only winter class you are taking you should be fine.
soooo much work. discussion posts, replies, homework modules and exams (that you have to do on a wonky online textbook website) were sometimes due in a single week. she sends out emails trying to ease the workload but it doesn't help. you need to pace yourself for this class
Easy A Class.. All her assignments are technically Complete or NC. 2 exams overall in the class that are basic common sense.. The first half of the semester is crunched with many assignments, but the last half is one or two assignments each week.. I'd def recommend her to anyone planning to take global studies!
Asynch. No midterms (very easy small 5q quizzes in its place). No final exam (tedious but easy assignment in its place). Mostly just easy assignments or discussion posts and replies (similar to biol10). 2 books (not provided). 1 major essay (lenient grading). 1 oral presentation (prerecorded). There is literally no reason not to get at least an A-.
Don't take this class if you want to learn biology in a structured, organized way. If you learn best through youtube shorts and random instragram style posting this is the teacher for you. You bet you will learn about self identity and making video shorts in this biology class....why I have no idea. Would have loved to learn more about biology,
Class was very do able if you put in the work. Grade is based upon tests, hw, and a research paper (hardest part).
You def need to read a lot, lots of hm per week. You just need to manage your time well. She is very responsive, I would take other classes with her for sure.
This was an asynchronous class. All material is based on the online text book, McGraw Hill. Lots of reading and note taking. This class is not too difficult but it will ALWAYS keep you busy. Lots of easy extra credit on the exams taking place every other week. Her canvas page is very organized and detailed. I never once had to email her.
The workload isn't too much, but if you want to max our your points to an A+ you're going to be grinding pretty hard. I found the essay to actually be a decent bit of fun despite the fact that I hate writing essays (but your mileage may vary). I'm not the biggest fan of Professor Poffenroth herself but it's an asynchronous class so it's fine.
Taken over the winter, asynchronous. Fantastic how she opens the CANVAS page early. I finished the entire course before the session started. Just spend some days working on this class full-time, and you will be done quickly. Do not try too hard on the research paper, and take advantage of the safety-net policy as stated in the syllabus.
Easy professor if you put in the work.
She accepts no late work. So you already know what sort of professor she is, beware. She has stated in her Syllabus she does NOT care about emergencies or doctors note. Sounds weird and miserable.
Absolutely ridiculous amount of work for a GE lower division course. 99% of the assignments given are just busy work and way too tedious. You're allowed to miss up to 50 points of work without affecting your grade but you'll be given about 100-120 points worth of work for just one week. Nice professor, exhausting and unnecessary class.
Great professor! The only "bad" things are if you're just looking for an easy grade. She sets up her online asynchronous classes so that there are multiple assignments, lectures, and discussions week to week. This means you actually get to learn the concepts in different ways, and she is genuinely making sure you do your work.
Dr. Poffenroth is sweet however the amount of work for this class is RIDICULOUS for a online GENERAL ED course! The workload for this class is HEAVY and I highly advise you do not take it unless you are genuinely passionate about environmental studies AND time for about 10 assignments a week. However if you can manage the workload its a easy A.
Not to use any Course Hero
This professor gives a ton of homework. Probably about 5-8 assignments per week. Most assignments are discussions posts. However, there are two books to read and three major assignments that take a long time to finish. Hard to keep up with this online class due to its many many assignments.
Really nice and great professor, but there are a TON of assignments, at least 5-10 each week. Granted, I had an asynchronous class, but a lot of the assignments aren't as bad as they sound. It's mainly video quizzes, discussion posts, and some worksheets. Make sure to spend a good chunk of time on this class if you're good with that workload!
Very good professor and easy class.
I took this course over the summer. One piece of advice if you plan to do so: Learn. Time. Management. While Doctor Poffenroth does give a lot of assignments, as long as you take the time and put in the work it's an easy A. Don't do your work at the last minute, as you'll be really behind. No late work will be accepted, either.
I wished myself good luck before meeting with Mary Poffenroth during her office hours. I found her class to be one of the easiest classes at SJSU. Energy Drinks, Sickle Cell and Inheritance, GMOs, Climate Change, Influenza, and Cancer.
I fell behind in her class and she worked with me the whole way. Her assignments don't take long to do but it is easy to fall behind if you don't do the little assignments. Her paper was fun to write and it was a great class. Do the homework and follow the instructions and you will get a good grade.
She knows her stuff, everything very clearly laid out, lots of assignments per week but they're not very difficult, exams are all pretty much common sense. Only one longer research paper.
Professor is knowledgeable but her class is ridiculous. Summer class she expect you to write around 4-5k words per week. Stay away if you have actual things to do outside of the summer class.
I took Professor Poffenroth's class back in Spring 2024. Her class is very informational to say the least and is engaging. Granted, there was a lot of papers *(Assignments)* but that's part of planning. As long as you keep up with the work in the class, you're not gonna be so far off. Make sure to plan ahead in her class and keep up.
Lots of assignments each week, but if you stay on top of the work, it's an easy A. Made my study prep easier with unstuck ai alongside the textbook.
Good professor, class could mainly be self-studied by reading the textbook. Consists of 6 unit tests, a biodiversity essay, and several discussion boards. There's no final and grade is determined mostly based on the 6 unit tests. This online course is mostly self-study, but would definitely take her again in person due to how organized she was.
unbearable amount of coursework, don't take this class if you think it will be an easy asynch online class. At least 5 discussions a week 150 word minimum, and you will need two 50 word replies. On top of that there are like two projects. You would be spending a few hours just to finish the work. if you have another choice, don't take this class.
She assigns 6 assignments a week that each require around 300 words, the same material can be learned with just one or two of them. The majority of her assignments are unnecessary and tedious, and even if you had a stroke she won't let you turn any of this busy work in late. She also forces you to use a useless citation method called CSE Name Year.
asynch semester course -- assignments every week, there's a decent amt, and sometimes the topics are unnecessary to cover | prof's policies were kind of irritating: CSE citation, no late work | didn't really learn about "human understanding"
If you are taking BIOL 10, take her online course. Super Easy. Online McGraw Hill assignments every week, but they are super easy. 6 Exams across the whole course, also very easy. 1 Exam will be dropped if you miss it. Very lenient and easy grader on writing. Easy Pass
50 points per module and like 6 super short things per module. You have a paper then an oral presentation then a final reviewing everyone's oral presentation. EXTREMELY clear with grading. Cannot sing her course structure enough praise, take this class if you can. She's super nice too and will definitely work with you to make sure you pass
Kind of easy because it was all repetitive but as long as you do the work you'll be fine. Lots of online homework like watching a video with questions midway. Seems like a lot but is actually easy and pretty quick. Definitely overwhelming at first but you get used to it. Also a group project, randomly assigned, communication is key with your group
Overall a very dedicated and inspired professor. Dr. Poffenroth is passionate and the coursework is manageable. Lots of discussion boards. For a class that I only needed for a GE credit, the amount of homework was sometimes frustrating (far more assignments than my main classes), but it was doable.
If you are taking this course during the summer, you can get a head start because MP opens it early. I heavily recc to take advantage of that to prevent overwhelming yourself. Majority of the hw was easy but tedious; lots of reading and writing. 1 lit review paper, 1 oral presentation, and 20 summaries of oral presentations.
Gives a borderline crazy amount of work and thinks her class is literally the only class in the world. I would highly recommend not choosing this teacher.
Assigns around 5-6 weekly assignments, not too difficult but very time consuming for a GE class.
Very sweet and organized professor with very detailed instructions for every assignment. However, she assigns around six assignments every Friday, which can be overwhelming for a GE class. If you're not taking this course for your major I wouldn't recommend since it's very time-consuming.
She's a nice professor but assigns too much to work to be done on Friday although it's mostly time manageable as you have plenty of time in the work before Friday to submit it.
