The class isn't difficult but she laughs and carries on about things that aren't funny which really got under my skin and is otherwise boring. This was the only SOC210 teacher when I took it. Get someone else or just take SOC101.
I think she's very good at what she does, and her stories are interesting and funny. Perhaps you only find the stories boring if you don't understand them? ;)
Was not helpful in any kind of way. Do not wish for other students to take her!
I enjoyed this class. Ms. Reiter has an incredible sense of humor. The material was dry, but she made it interesting. It wasn't a very hard class, but I learned a lot. I would recommend her to anyone who is interested in sociology.
had her for soc over the computer. She said to study things for the exams that were not even on there. She was not very helpful over the web class.
web based soc 210. class wasn't too dificult. did mediocre on tests but passed w/ B since project makes up a huge part. class was interesting but i don't think i got a response to one email i sent beside the introduction at the beginning of the course. would not take her again.
I felt that she was very interesting and is good at what she does. People who have not liked her probably just don't understand her. Her humor is witty and she seems to be quite grounded. She is very helpful and insightful but if you are the type that needs hand holding...she is not for you. She is definitely the 'grown ups' professor.
I loved this class. Mary has some great stories and makes the class interesting. I just studied my notes and did well on the tests. The project was fun. I agree with the "grown-up's professor" description.
Seemed nice enough. Class was easy. However I showed up to the testing center one morning at 10am and the test I needed to take had not been turned in to the testing center. I had to drive home and come all the way back the next day.
Great teacher. Her presentations were peppered with audio/video clips about the subject matter that made the class interesting, always. Her project is easy, as long as you follow directions. I would deffinately recommend this teacher.
I loved this class. Her lectures were really interesting and well organized. Her examples are based on her real life experiences.
I took her for the Soc. 210 webcourse, and while I have no idea what her class room teaching is like, I loved the online course. The assignments weren't difficult if you take the time to look up the information, and most were pretty interesting. I enjoyed reading the discussion board posts and she was very helpful with the deviance project.A+ prof!
I would not recommend taking an online class with Mary. Maybe she is okay in the classroom, but not as an online instructor. Her notes were not very helpful, in fact, they were confusing, and her tests were too hard (average class grade was about a C). Plus, she really takes her time grading assignments. Assignments that should not have taken s
I took her online class and loved it. It was one of the best online classes I've taken so far. I thought the tests were pretty easy and the stuff online was really clear. The web exercises were fun and the project was also easy. I really feel like I learned alot.
This was the easiest web class I ever took and I've taken many.
Great class!
This online class was awful! Tests were hard, book was rediculous, totally hard to follow, plus I've never had a teacher rip apart a paper the way she did. Notes were little help, not structured for an online class. I'm an A student and even though I worked really hard I almost didn't get an A. I would never recommend this teacher!
I took this as an online course and it was horrible. I took a test the first week, dropped the class in week 8 and nothing had been graded. nothing was graded in a timely matter. Not too mention that this was an online class but had to take the tests in the testing center. If I had time to go to main campus, I would have taken a normal class.
I liked Professor Reiter so much that I took both her online classes. Got A's in both. She was always helpful in e-mail, the tests were straight from the book, and I think you get perfect scores just for doing the homework.
Amusing class lectures. She often got way off topic, but kept things interesting. Used lots of video clips as examples, and the quarter project was EASY. (Just make sure you know how to write a *proper* college-level paper!) Tests were pretty decent, too.
Wonderful professor. She uses several forms of media and technology to enhance the lectures. Class is never boring. Although she is actually a lawyer, she is never rude or condescending. Very helpful and intelligent.
I took this class online and thought it was great. Professor Reiter was clear in her expectations and made this an interesting class. I would highly recommend taking this course with her.
took her sociology class spring 07 quarter. very fun, interactive. she is very spunky and rides a Harley! How can you go wrong? The projects were easy, the tests we're fine if you study. Prepare yourself for a lot of sarcasm and laughs in her class.
Good teacher. Uses power point for lectures and tests are relatively easy. Homework is also easy.
I took the Web course and wouldn't recommend it to anyone!! The tests had ridiculously obscure questions; all content not concept, IE memorization of stats and names. Grades were posted weeks after assignments were turned in and the aids posted on blackboard were more confusing than the content itself. The Web course is a bust...don't do it!
I took her class online. She does have obscure questions when it comes to Tests/Exams. You do need to know facts from the book. The quizzes and discussion boards are easy A's. If you don't get ace them, then your lazy.I aced everything in the class but the exams. I got 81,70,and 70. Which dropped me to a B, but she bumped me up after talking to her.
This class was not an overload on work and VERY interesting. I took the online version, and had no problems at all. Would recommend everyone takes it!
Unbelievable, I took 105 and am not sure what I got out of it. It looks like I earned a B.I never quite got the purpose behind the wiki and we had students 2/3 rds of the way through the quarter still not sure what to do. 2 weeks to grade anything was the norm, I could not shake the feeling that we were an annoyance while she works on her Phd.
I took the online class, and it was seriously a piece of cake. Homework every week, a group project (which while annoying, is kind of interesting), and 3 tests. The tests can be a little tricky, make sure you go through her lesson plans, key terms and read the book and you'll be fine.
Book is fun and topics are intersting. There are no study guides and some questions are the kind that make you wonder why anyone would memorize that (percentages and such). She also emphasises memorization of Scientist's names. Cool class just needs better study guides.
Thinks that the student should know what is important to study for exams, will not give study guide. Do all homework and wiki project and you will pass.
She was alright. I took the class online.
If you show up you can have awesome discussions. she is up for anything you have to say and she listens to your opinions. She is an awesome teacher and this class was so fun!!!
I took 210& 239 online, and 299 (special topics: serial murder) in class. If you pay attention and do the reading, you will learn a lot. Online she tests off both the book and her powerpoints. In class she allows lively discussion. She is very interesting, nice, and knowledgeable, but not overly easy. Would def recommend.
Overall, "OK" class to take online. Not too much work but the work you get requires effort. Slow with grading but I have experienced much worse.
Took online class. It was a breeze. She sets it up week by week what you need to finish. Read what you're told to and you do well in the class. A little slow on the grading, but I'll take that for a nice class
Took Soc. of Serial Murder. Fascinating class! She is relaxed and allows for discussions, and the homework assignments and final paper were not difficult, but rather interesting and even... fun! Exam material seems to come heavily from class notes vs. the book, so attendance is important. I'd definitely recommend her & would take future classes.
Does not give students access to study guides or powerpoints. Has canceled class 3 times(twice before tests) Does not do in class reviews. Lectures info from power points and gets off topic Alot. Has very strict policies and if you bomb test 1 and ask her what more you can do, she will tell you to just read the book and youll be fine. NOT EXPECTED
A friendly, warm, and fun professor. She creates clean presentations, and requires the use of the textbook as well. The textbook is appealing, but terribly outdated for its topic. She also missed several classes (T/Th), which was disappointing to me. I read the entire textbook, and attended every class, though.
Took this class online with Dr. Reiter and I enjoyed the class. The textbook is not a very fun book to read, but I suggest reading it, if not for the fun of the class then for the exams. The exams are quite hard and you have to read the book and study hard as she does not give you study guides. She does answer all emails but takes a few days.
WOW!! What a terrible experience I had with this teacher. I can't believe she has been there for 10 years, according to her. Major problems with communication, always changing the rules, inconsistent, wrong answers to questions. I had to go to her office and ask what HER answers were, so I could pass a test, not use the anwers in the book!!
I took this class online. It was very easy. Not too many discussion boards to participate in, but there was a lot of extra reading material in addition to required reading in the text book. Study questions and homework questions were super easy and aimed at helping you learn...not making you fail.
I've taken a few of Reiter's online courses. They all follow the same set up, so once you figure it out, you're set for her other courses. The only down fall is that she is slow to grade. Usually it takes about 2 weeks, but sometimes 3.
I took the class online and first of all, the study questions are awful. The tests are great, but the homework and quizzes don't match the textbook well. So those 3 hours of reading don't turn out to be very useful. It's helpful that she is responsive, but overall I would aviod other classes in the future.
She was very very relaxed and I really liked that about her I feel like she def had the potential to be an amazing teacher but she missed a lot of classes! She was very clear and easy to understand I liked her sense of humor too.
Doesn't respond to emails. Doesn't grade things (including midterms) in a reasonable amount of time to gauge if you are on the right track. No interaction, entire class is self taught with no actual participation from the instructor. They should basically give the class away for free because there is no instructor.
Did not respond to emails until I copied her superiors on my messages. Did not send exam over to Disability Services. Does not grade homework in a timely manner to assist one in learning material & preparing for upcoming quizzes & tests. Does not communicate or participate with students on DB with online course. Obscure questions on exams.
dr. reiter was a great and knowledgeable professor I would recommend to anyone, she does take a little time to grade but that is because she actually grades what you turn in not just giving credit for turning something in. she cancelled a couple of classes when emergency occurred (happens to the best of us) and works with you to help understand.
LOVED this class and this professor. She really knows her topic and is eager to teach it! Test were hard but very passable the homework was fun. and the semester was way to short! Thank the gods for professor reiter
The best professor I have had at CSCC. Lectures are interesting. Only issue is there was A LOT of reading as well as article summaries.
This class was two major grade tests and 4 discussions. It also involved quizzes that, in my opinion, did not test your knowledge on the class. The tests were made up of the quizzes. The quizzes were very particular questions. It seemed more of a trick than it did knowledge.
She is awesome! I took her class in Law, Justice & Society and she is amazing ! Early on she tells you that the class is challenging, but if you do what is expected and study you'll get a good grade. I had tons of questions to ask her by email and she always responded. Only downfall is she takes a long time to respond. But its worth it!!
The whole semester's assignments were available before the start of the semester, so you can work ahead at your own pace. The textbook is interesting, but I think I would have done just fine with the blackboard material alone. There was not much standing in the way of success for me.
Weekly questions multiple choice online, about 10. A discussion board post or written assignment every hear and there, exams, easy.
Quite honestly, I felt that Ms. Reiter was lazy. Her expectations on assignments were not clear, and she was not really good about grading promptly. If you can take someone else for this class, YOU SHOULD!
This was a good class and she seems to really want to help. I liked the way her class was organized and the work was pretty easy. She gave us her cell phone number so we could text her if we had any questions. When I did, she helped me right away.
Best word to describe her is zany. If you take her class, you'll see why. Super easy to talk to and relatable. I had her for a standard class and an online class. Communicates quick and well in both . Fun lectures but must be prepared to take notes. Her exams are taken almost verbatim from her notes.
Overall, Professor Reiter was a solid choice. She was a pretty fair grader, gave some good feedback, and kept you up to date with what was due. Reading the textbook and online materials, taking notes, and studying will help you do well on her assignments, study questions, and exams.
Great professor, great person, overall my favorite class Ive taken so far.
She was a great professor and took time to explain the material in the class so everyone could understand. You have three exams including the final and a couple of HW assignments. She gave a clear study guide so as long as you understand the study guide you will do well in this class.
Learned a lot in this class. It was challenging but very beneficial.
I took sociology 1101 online and was given a study guide which helped immensely as I was reading through the textbook. She will respond fast, and help you through any questions. I spent on average 3 hours a day, 3 days a week for this class.
Took Probate online for the summer and it was the worst decision. I should've known how bad this class would be when I had to print out a calendar to make sure I understood when assignments were due. Her wording is used to trick you in exams and her study guides are useless.
The class material was interesting, and the exams are straightforward. Overall, an easy class, but make sure you do the weekly assignments (I did not study for exams and earned a B). The professor did not interact nor give any feedback for assignments, but the course was organized and easy to follow.
I very much enjoyed this class. Professor was organized and specific with assignments. Read and do the work, youll pass. Reading: one to two chapters a week. Writing: Three short essays Quizzes: Weekly (10 questions) Exams: Three.
You have to read the textbook to pass! There are some quiz and exam questions that are only in the textbook. Do yourself a favor and don't miss any assignments, homework or discussion boards, because it can quickly affect your grade. Sometimes the assignments don't make sense with the chapter but just do them.
Took Intro to Sociology online and got an A. Lots of reading, try to split it up throughout the week. There is a calendar that makes it clear when due dates are so that's nice. Tests are a bit hard and concepts can be confusing at times. Very straightforward class though.
For a 3 credit fluff class, she piles in as much stuff as possible for you to do. It's insane. I have 4 and 7 credit courses with way less material and tests. I don't know why she has so much material for this class. The exams are weighted very heavy as well. Don't take unless you are ready to be drowning in homework and tests. Ugh.
MUST purchase the book, that's where all the "learning" you'll receive will come from. Manageable class, there are homework assignments and discussion boards but nothing crazy. She grades quickly and as an online course, there was no meeting time, just complete work by the deadlines. Finished with an 86 and she curved the final by 60%, ended w a 92
This was a really interesting class, and she made it clear what needed to be done in order to pass the class. There were not an excessive amount of assignments, but there is plenty of reading to do. Her syllabus and all of the additional content was very well organized and overall I thought it was a very put together class.
Mad at myself for not getting an A. Easiest course I've taken thus far 5 discussion boards (once every 2 weeks) 2 exams (mid point & final) 4 Homework Assignments (once every 2 weeks)
This course was pretty self explanatory. The class work itself was fine and I could work with it. Lots of exercises which is just little quizzes on the material you read throughout the course. Basically you get a good grade if you read the material. I think there was no communication from professor but overall ok class. Gets the job done.
Mary is a great professor, but the course material is definitely difficult at times. You will need to put in a lot of work outside of class in order to do well. This class is based off an 100 point grading scale, so virtually every point matters. She is a fair grader (granted you put in the work) and is very accessible and caring.
No recorded lectures! Tons of reading! Tests are not definitions you have to apply the knowledge to scenarios like a nurse would do.. that part was really aggravating because I'm not going to school to be a lawyer but the tests might as well have been a bar exam. Recorded lectures would definitely help.. or links to youtube videos.
Too much reading, I read the textbook for like the first two chapters and decided to never read it again and rely only on the Softchalk lessons. Basically if you only need this as an GE to transfer, great class. But if you need a A, you will have to put in more than 3 credit hours worth of work
DONT TAKE THIS COURSE ONLINE. Not only do they annoy about any small thing for proctor exams, but this is a heavy reading course that doesn't take a break. Professor was cool, but the course work wasn't and her with this much reading/exams. Just not worth throwing your money away like I did.
Very easy class and interesting topics. She posts very clearly what needs to be done each week. The exams are a little difficult but as long as you do good on other assignments you can do badly on exams and end with a B or low A.
I thought that this class was interesting, but it was just supposed to be my GE class. This wasn't an easy A by any means and was made very difficult when it is just a GE course. First off, it's graded heavily by exams and the exams are so philosophical and require such theoretical thinking. The professor is nice though.
Overall the class was kind of test heavy (40% of final grade) but the weekly work was not difficult and the test questions aligned really closely with the weekly lesson questions. The homework assignments were tedious but she didn't grade them too harshly. Course based on a textbook. She had helpful lecture videos.
Did not read the textbook once. The class is kind of set up weird, I like the DBs but the lessons I thought were dumb, I would have rather taken a quiz. I wish she gave a study guide. This class is an easy online course, I got a B because I didn't care to study for the 2 exams worth 200 points. 1,000 point class
Professor Reiter's class was easy and insightful. I wasn't crazy about the lectures, but the lessons/quizzes were structured really well and made for great notes. She was lenient and understanding when it matters, which you can't say for many other professors unfortunately. Overall it was a good class. I would take another class of hers again.
I took an online class so I barely had any interaction with her but her class notes and study guides were very useful and the course its self was structured amazingly.
please do yourself a favor and do NOT take this class if you have anything else going on in your life whatsoever. The material itself is not hard to understand and the way she has things set up online is easy to navigate but if you have 15-18 hours to throw away a week doing online homework than this class is for you.
