This is a very good teacher and pretty easy too
Fair teacher and a more than fair grader. Was a wonderful teacher to be around and very flexible.
Good teacher, lets you re-do assignments. Lots of work but she give you help.
Overall good. Fair grader and easy to talk to. I would recommend this professor.
Mary was great. Enjoyed her enjoyed the class and enjoyed her teaching style. Want to take her for ask of my english classes!
Some easy assignments, some hard. Pretty helpful. Nice teacher.
Good teacher. If you show up for class and do your assigned work you wont have a problem with her.
Wish I could have her as a teacher for all of my English classes. Really enjoyed her class.
She is a easy professor to take. As long as you get good grades on the papers then you will pass the class easily. Her classes are pretty useless but its worth a good grade.
Super laid back and easy to talk to. Put forth a lil effort and get a great grade. Didn't do much in this class until the final month, then many small writing projects due. Highly recommend her.
Mary was a great teacher! She is very fair and very easy to talk to and genuinely cares about her students! I highly recommend her. If you apply yourself and do the work you'll get a good grade as she is very fair and wants her students to succeed! Wish there were more teachers like her!
Wonderful teacher! Very enthusiastic!
I would highly recommend her. My previous teacher made me dislike English. Professor Richards helped me feel better about writing again. She's very open-minded and is very willing to help. It was not an easy A for me because writing is not easy for me, but because of her guidance I did get an A.
This class is easy if you do the work and attend class. She is not very organized and it's mostly laid back discussion every day. No real assignments and she doesn't grade whether or not you've done the homework. Would not recommend this class if you're not dedicated to reading and doing nothing the whole class period!
She is my favorite teacher so far at HACC. She has real insight into what you are saying and she has a sense of humor which is rare at HACC. She truly enjoys teaching and it flows through to the students.
Took her for engl 101 last semester and somehow managed to get an A, so I took her again this semester. The class was so unorganized. She didn't know what she was doing and actually asked the students for clarification when things were due. Only grades a few things and grades very hard so it is tough to pass her class. Do not take her!!
Don't take her. She doesn't seem like she cares about the students. Do NOT take her
Very nice teacher but seemed a bit unorganized (maybe teaching too many classes?). Seemed to play favorites and grading was inconsistent. Papers I felt great on received low grades, ones I felt not so sure on received high grades - and other classmates said the same. 6 papers & 1 presentation. No hard, but just don't know what you will get.
Don't do it, just don't. Trust me, my whole class hated and had trouble with this class,3 kids withdrew within the first week from being offended and pissed off by her. She isn't clear, she never grades stuff, she just isn't a good teacher. Just don't do it, save yourself. I've had to learn the hard way.
She is very laid back. If you're someone who needs structure and strict direction, I'd say stay clear of her. Otherwise, I definitely recommend taking her. She's super nice and open to big class discussions (which I always prefer to lectures). She doesn't give a lot of assignments, so it's important to go to class to be apart of the discussions.
Mary is very relaxed and understanding. I had some personal problems and she worked with me. Some assignments are hard others are easy.
This was a great class but get ready to work. Prof Richards is there for you but makes you re-do assignments till they're nearly perfect. I guess that's good 'cause then you get good grades, but some students complained cause they just wanted to pass, not get an A. But I learned a lot about Business writing so it was all worth it.
One of the best English courses I have taken. The final project is excellent and a wonderful learning experience, but be prepared to do a lot of work. The class is extremely independent so be sure to be self disciplined. She does not hold your hand but if you ask for help she will give it in fact she encourages it. She wants you to succeed.
I have no idea what these other people are talking about. This was one of the best classes I've had anywhere, even Penn State. She practically forces you to rewrite your papers so you can get a better grade. Anyone who doesn't get an A in this class just didn't try.
Taking her again next semester. Super nice and helpful. Don't skip reading the book or you'll never make it.
I had no confidence in writing till i took this class with mary. super helpful and nice.
Prof. Richards is good at creating an environment for discussion, she lets students take the lead on where it goes but once it hits a dead end she will ask a question to start things again. If you don't participate you better do well on the papers or you're not going to do well in this class. Readings are a must to do well in the discussions!!
Thought this would be a simple class, but somehow Mary turned this into a nightmare. Her severe lack of communication combined with her ability to give assignments that seem impossible to complete in an online environment really makes this class terrible. It is almost impressive how she has turned such a simply class into something so confusing.
This is a difficult course. I thought online would be easier but its not. 6 weeks is not a lot of time to do the assignments when you're working full-time too. Need to be a self-starter.
Seems to have an attitude if you don't come to class for a certain reason. Tried to get in contact with her, never emailed me back. Not a fan.
One of the best writing classes at HACC. Everything is applicable to business classes. Strict about grammar, but you won't make the same mistake twice!
Took this course in 6 weeks. Lots of work, but Professor Richards is friendly and gives quick feedback and clear answers. She also lets you rewrite assignments, which I needed to do once. Got an A but I worked for it. I'd take her again.
We're near the end of this class and it's been a great experience. Course is organized and easy to follow, and Mary is available for questions (unlike some online classes I've had). Working in a group online takes some getting used to, but Mary guides you thru it. Can't go wrong with this class.
Good class. Organized and easy to follow. Answers questions right away. I'd take another class with Mary.
She didn't grade anything and gave the whole class a B at midterms. Her feedback was confusing or unclear because I fixed was she wanted me too and still gave me a bad grade. She gives meaningless assignments that have nothing to do with the class. She also sits at her computer, drinking a diet coke, the whole class. We basically taught ourselves.
She takes forever to grade. She lacks communication skills, the whole semester she would never answer anything I emailed her. She really doesn't give feedback, and the feedback she does give isn't helpful. She likes to look over papers and say that they're good, then grade them poorly because you didn't include what she wanted. What a trip!
She assigns papers expecting you to know what she wants. She will not be clear and you will have to ask multiple times. When doing peer review I had 3 other classmates say my paper was great while she gave me a C. Also she seems very opinionated. Rather it is politics or conspiracy theories yes it appears that she is a hard believer of conspiracies
Excellent class. Her assignment sheets are pretty clear and she goes over everything in class. You have to read the book cause she doesnt teach it in class - just expects you to have read it. Only 4 papers to write and the chance to redo them after she grades them which is a pain but better than getting a low grade.
Good class. She makes you think about everything. I was in a writing group with some girls who didnt care but she switched my group when I asked her. Other than that I liked the class.
Loved this class. All the topics were interesting and her feedback on papers really helped me do better.
Mary is one of the best professors Ive taken at HACC. She gives lots of feedback and helps you with your papers in class. I wish I had taken her for all my English classes.
Not as easy as I thought but overall a good class. Shes easy to work with and listens if you have a problem in class.
Ive gotten many compliments on my writing at my job since taking this class. Even though its an online course Professor Richards answers questions right away and makes sure you understand the material.
Just do not do it. Take another proffessor. The level of confusion and stress with the class set up and requirements will make you want to give up.
I would highly recommend steering clear of this Professor. The class was scattered, we were given virtually no help (just a prompt to write) and the professor was distant and not engaged. The class has a week left and I still have 10assignments ungraded! The homework would not have been difficult if given proper Instructions, but that was missing.
My first online class and I loved it. I always knew when assignments were due and her feedback was helpful not like some that just leave a couple of words and you don't know what they mean. And the textbook is free.
One of the best! Assignment directions are clear and her feedback was really helpful. Only had 5 papers to write for the semester, so I don't know what the dude with 10 assignments is talking about. Great choice.
Very respectfully, Mary Richards is the worst professor I've ever had in my life... and I've had some pretty bad professors. She almost never responds to emails, although the main focus of the course is communication. No matter how hard you work or how good your paper is, expect a D. If it is not written in her writing style, it's wrong. Terrible.
Horrible professor in my opinion. Provided a discussion board for questions in the class, she never answered them. Little communication and understanding of what she expected. Does not update grades throughout the semester so you will never know what you have in the class. Little to be graded, but no extra credit. Would not recommend.
She is the worst professor I have ever had. I took ENG 104 to fill in some of my English requirements. As an English Major, I didn't think I would be receiving D's on EVERY single assignment. She is useless in trying to contact. Revisions are useless, you will still receive a D. Take this class with someone who isn't Mary Richards.
I had Mary for ENG 101, 2020 Summer (8-week course). Mrs. Richards does not require any bought textbooks for the class, which is a plus! We were graded mostly on 5-6 writing assignments. She did not provide much instruction on how to write the papers and graded extremely hard. Be prepared to work very hard to get an A in this class!
She is one of the best at HACC. She answers emails and texts pretty quick. She gives detailed instructions and feedback so you can revise your work. Theres a lot of assignments so you have lots of chances to earn a good grade. Take Mary Richards if you want to learn. Dont take her if youre just looking for an easy A.
I would not recommend this professor to anyone. I took this course for my degree and nothing I did was good enough. Very unclear on what she wants. The feedback she gave on my assignments was very rude to the point where I actually dropped the class. I feel like she didn't want to help me improve, more of just making me feel bad about my writing.
Mary does not have any idea how business is actually conducted and expects students to follow the textbook to the letter. When informed of the differences between the real world and school, she dismisses students. Instructions are extremely unclear that she had to make a revision and belittled students for not understanding. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
If you hate yourself, take this class. She has unclear directions and gets mad when you ask her questions. She doesn't teach, she only relives on what the textbook says, and if you challenge her about this she'll dismiss you. I ended up dropping this class 4 weeks in after I FAILED an assignment by saying Hello rather than Dear on a graded email.
Took this class as a dual enroll student in high school. She was an extremely tough grader who gave little to no feedback and little to no guidance. She gave super vague instruction for projects and then acted like you were stupid to not know what to do. She gave little to no care about you actually doing well. Do not take her class.
This is a great class. Mrs. Richards gives you clear instructions and detailed feedback on your assignments and lets you re-do them to fix mistakes. Make sure you proofread though. A couple of students were mad because she docked points for misspelling, but hey, people should know how to use the spell checker. Must read the textbook!
Wow. This class is a lot of work but if you want to learn, this is the class to take. Mary is professional, friendly, and really helpful. She gives you tons of feedback on assignments and is very encouraging.
I took this class my last semester as a 4.0 student and got a C. Literally NOTHING you do and no amount of time or effort will get you a good grade in this class. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
Instructions are clear, everything is laid out for you. Her feedback is helpful and there are lots of assignments so you have the chance to always do better next time. For some papers you get the chance for a do over, so there's no reason to not earn an A if you do the work.
I absolutely love this professor. Her class is very well organized and easy to follow. All of the assignments are posted at the beginning of the semester so you can work ahead if you want. Very caring. I had a family problem and she worked with me so I could stay in the class. Do the work and you'll get an A.
Great class, great teacher. One of the most organized online classes Ive taken. She explains everything and answers emails right away. Her comments on my papers helped me do better and she really cared about us learning.
One of the best online professors at hacc. Explains everything, answers questions right away, everything is laid out so you know what to do and really knows her stuff. I think she worked in the field.
She's helpful. She wants you to do well and it shows. Class is organized so its easy to follow. You'll need to use the book though. I usually hate required classes but this one wasn't bad.
Overall really good course. Instructions are clear, she get right back to you with answers. explains everything. This is the 2nd class I took with her and I'd tak another.
THIS PROFESSOR IS AMAZING! She is very helpful and I learned a great deal in her class! I wish I could have met her. When you make a mistake on a paper she tells you what it was so you dont have to do it again. A+ amazing teacher!!!!!!!!!!!
Easy class if you do your work. Very organized prof.. I like the way she put information on D2L . Everything easy to navigate.
This professor was a great choice for my technical writing class. She answered all of my emails within 24 hours, and was very constructive with her feedback. She wants you to succeed
This teacher did a great job! Whenever I had questions she was always very quick to respond and help me out. She wanted to see her students succeed and would go out of her way to help individual students. Great class. Would take her again!
Have taken 3 other English courses before so I'm no stranger to writing. Professor Richards provides extremely confusing assignments/directions with little to no guidance. She still hasn't removed D2L material from previous semesters. I do not know who is giving her all of these rave reviews, but they're clearly mistaken. Stay away.
Pros: Lots of feedback to help you do better next time. Many assignments so your grade isn't based on just one or two things - always a chance to improve. Accessible and friendly teacher. Cons: You have to complete all the readings and watch the videos or you won't know how to do the assignments.
This was my first online and college course. Mary made it really easy to understand how find everything and how to do each paper. Her comments on my papers really helped me learn. I'm taking her again for my next English writing course.
Overall a good class. Theres a semester-long project that made the course interesting. All the assignments are related to real life, like the stuff Ill do at a job, so I thought the class was really helpful. She gives good directions and comments on my papers so I felt like I really learned something.
Great class. Very useful assignments and everything is organized. The professor is helpful and caring.
This class was so unorganized. The instructions for every assignment were not clear at all. There is one big group assignment throughout the semester and it ends with a presentation. She is such a harsh grader. I would not recommend taking this, I went into it thinking it would be my easiest class but my gpa dropped because of it.
I hate group projects but in this class the professor doesn't just throw you to the wolves. She monitors the groups progress the entire time and if someone doesn't do their part, she removes them from the team. The class is laid out so everything is easy to find and her assignments are easy to understand.
Everything about this class was good. The professor is very caring and works with you when you need help. The assignments are not hard and everything is very organized and easy to follow.
I took Prof Richards during the summer semester and although the workload was very demanding, she made it very easy to succeed as she was well organized and gave good feedback on our work. She has clear instructions to follow and her other assignments weren't too challenging. Id definitely take her again.
This professor was a great choice for my business writing class. She answered all of my emails within 24 hours, her assignments are easy to understand and she gave constructive feedback. Sometimes she seemed strict with her requirements but thats because she knows what you need to learn the material and cares about your success.
I take every class I can with Prof Richards. She's super helpful and explains everything really well.
Grading wise I felt like she was a little tough but also fair. I believe her grading system helped me improve my writing. Always available for questions and gives thoughtful responses to all the work done. She was very kind, and I enjoyed taking her class so much.
One of my two favorite professors at HACC! She gives helpful feedback and explains everything. She answers email right away and is really kind. The class is very well organized and the workload is very manageable. I wish she taught more classes.
This was a great class. Her comments on papers are very clear and helpful. Shes very direct but in a good way. She doesnt pat you on the head when you make a mistake but tells you how to fix it. My boss said she noticed an improvement in my writing right away.
This professor doesn't grade assignments until she feels like it. Essays are to be submitted to HOWL for review. The review completed by the HOWL instructor states your paper is excellent. Once submitting the assignment for a grade that meets all the criteria, you will receive a D. Beware of this class and stay away.
This was my first class at HACC and I really liked it. The professor really cares about your success. She explains everything and gives you checklists with links to everything you have to do that week. She gave me very helpful advice on my papers and was just generally easy to talk to.
She was not active in responding to emails or questions. She graded everything super last minute which made it difficult to know how you did to improve. It is not hard work or assignments, it is just difficult to do with her as your teacher because of not being involved in the class.
The assignments aren't difficult and her comments on your papers are detailed so you can use them to do better on the next paper. She's very responsive to questions and grades everything pretty in about a week or so. Would definitely take her class again!
Took this in 6 weeks over the summer. It is a lot of work cause you basically write a paper a week. The professor gave great feedback and graded my papers right away. Her assignments are easy to understand and the course is laid out so its really easy to follow. The textbook is free.
Her feedback is vague, her tone is condescending and unhelpful, and she seems to have a severely inflated sense of self-importance. Her ENGL 106 course REQUIRES a semester long group project where you will be paired with useless teammates. There is simply not enough space given to fully explain. Please do not take a class with Professor Richards.
Very good business writing class. My writing improved markedly and even my boss noticed. She gives helpful feedback and is always available for questions. Very nice professor. The only way to fail is to not do the work.
The class is organized well and all the assignments and rubrics are laid out and easy to understand. She's very helpful and nice.
This was an excellent class taught by a fantastic professor. She made the literature meaningful by helping us dive deeper into the plays and connect them to our current situations. She gave us tons of background information and made it clear that she valued our thoughts and showed that we have a place in academic discussions.
This was a really good class. The professor is very friendly and explains things well. It's an online class and organized great. I had no trouble seeing what was due because its all linked in the calendar. Papers are not hard to do and she grades fairly. Overall a good class and I would take her again.
The only way to not do well in the class is to skip assignments or not do what she says. Everything is laid out and easy to follow. I did all the work and got good grades. The professor is very nice and helpful.
Professor Richards is very nice and cares about her students. The assignments aren't hard but there are a lot of them. Her grading is fair and its easy to get a good grade if you follow the directions. If I need another English class I'd take her again.
I would not recommend Professor Richards. I took this class virtual. We did group projects that required us to meet frequently which is not a virtual class. We used an online textbook that was not useful for assignments as she demands APA but the textbook is MLA. Lack of clear feedback given on grading. Don't take if you don't have much free time.
This was a very good class. Professor Richards' assignments are well explained and there are examples of them in the textbook. She gives you lots of resources for APA and an example paper so you know how to do it. She also answers emails right away and is very helpful when you have questions.
This class was a pleasure. The readings and the writing assignments were enjoyable. I feel like she prepared me for the writing I'll have to do in the rest of my courses. Her feedback is detailed and helped me understand where I needed to improve. The textbook is free and you have lots of chances to get a good grade.
Do not take this class with Professor Richards. She is unwilling to help if you ask questions and consistently replies in a condescending tone. Her rubrics are vague and she grades based on her personal opinions, especially on the "Argument Essay" assignment. It isn't worth it to take this class with her, at least in an online format.
I highly recommend Professor Richard's English 101 class. The assignments are not difficult and she explains them clearly, she answers emails right away and helps you with anything you don't understand. She met with me a couple of times to help me talk about my ideas and figure things out. She is very caring and nice.
I have never in all my academic endeavors, received as many F's as I have in this course. Extremely tough grader, feedback is condescending and not helpful. This professor does NOT reply back to emails in a timely manner, unless it is an easy question to answer. Textbook heavy with no lectures or teaching. Would not recommend.
Professor Richards runs a well-organized class. Her feedback is clear, and she's responsive to emails. Though she has high standards, the manageable workload and helpful resources like unstuck study make this an enriching business writing course. Overall, a challenging but rewarding experience.
This professor does not engage. Even when you read her directions, it seems like she has an attitude. The papers are a little too demanding, she asks for too much, but then does not grade on time; she is just not the best professor. If you do not have much free time, please do not take her class.
I enjoyed this class. There is no textbook to buy - just articles to read. The articles are interesting and I learned a lot. She explains everything really well and answers emails right away. She was always very kind and helpful. I'd take the class again.
