Very boring in lecture, an unfairly hard grader, a rather discombobulated learning schedule. If I had it to do over, I would have certainly avoided her class at all costs
I don't know what the other person is talking about; Mary was wonderful. She's very genuine about what she's teaching. She graded very easily; not a lot of criteria at all, actually all 4 papers were very open and impromtu. I would take her; she's very easy to get along with. My first 101 teacher was WAY worse! Hardly any homework, also ;)
In mary richards class right now, dont have a clue as to what were suppose to be doing.
This is a good class with lots of explanations. Maybe the person who didn't know what to do should pay attention instead of being online during class.
This is the best class I've ever had. Wish I could take it again.
She was confusing...
She offers little help and gives no direction in papers and projects. We are past midterms and she still doesn't have our one grade in that was due a month ago.
Summer class for 6 weeks. Assignments everyday and some are really hard. Expect to learn but expect to work too. Learned how to write a resume and letters the RIGHT way! Book is expensive but you need it if you want to pass. Would take this teacher again.
Pretty good class. She gives alot of explanations on your papers so you know how to fix them but she marks everything. Taking her again next semester, so overall, a good class.
Love, love, love this class. Everything was great.
Mary is one of the best professors I've had at hacc. She doesn't mess around but if you're a serious student you'll succeed in her class.
Can't say enough about how great this class was. Got lots of help from her on all my papers. Show up, do the work and you'll pass. Work hard and you'll get an A.
Mary cares about her students. You have a few papers to write, but it is an English class. She gives you the opportunity to correct your papers for a better grade except for the final because there isn't enough time. Easy A if you put the work in.
Mary makes technical writing interesting, which is kinda amazing since its not.
This was is one of the best classes I've taken at HACC. Mary is super nice and helps you whenever you ask.
Prof Richards answers questions right away. Some professors make you wait a couple of days to answer emails but most of the time she got back to me the same day.
Isn't specific about requirements at all then gives you a bad grade when you don't follow her unstated requirements.
The class is laid out clearly and you know exactly what to do and how to do it. Lots of writing but it IS a writing class. Feedback is helpful and she lets you redo assignments.
Took a 6 week course over the summer and she took 4 weeks to grade the first assignment. She gives everyone a D or something very low and then expects you to resubmit it later with revisions. Her help was basically useless, she did not even spend the time to create a lecture or to even address the class. She seemed clueless, avoid her at all costs.
Very tough grader.
Not clear on the instructions that she provides.
Took this over 6 weeks so I expected to work. Her lectures are helpful and the instructions are really detailed and clear. She does expect you to follow the instructions but if you do you'll get a good grade. Answered emails quickly and really wants to help you do well in the class.
She was very unclear with her instructions and expectations, often saying one thing in the assignment description, then saying the exact opposite when she was grading. I got the feeling she was looking for things to find wrong with my work, and that getting an A could have never happened. I lost my 4.0 GPA to a lower-level English class...
Pros: Lots of feedback to help you do better next time. Many assignments so your grade isn't based on just one or two things - always a chance to improve. Accessible and friendly teacher. Cons: You have to complete all the readings and watch the videos or you won't know how to do the assignments.
Professor Richards is amazing. The course is laid out so its easy to follow and her assignments are clear. You know exactly what you need to do to earn an A. Her feedback is so positive and affirming. I was nervous taking my first college writing class but I didnt need to be. Shes caring and wants you to do well. Im taking her for 102 next.
This was a good class. It was hard at first cause I didn't understand the assignments right away but once I figured out that I had to read the book and watch the lectures it was pretty easy to get an A. The class is organized and its easy to find everything you need.
She was great. Everything is spelled out so its easy to understand. She gives helpful comments and examples for everything and she's very friendly and responsive to emails. Nothing is difficult. Do the work and you'll get an A.
Though the professor was strict about writing correctly, this attitude was good. I needed to be pushed to improve my writing and this was the right class for that.
Professor Richards is an amazing teacher! She was able to teach me valuable skills that will help me throughout my life!
Professor Richards gave helpful feedback throughout the class that helped me to become a better writer and reader. I enjoyed the way her class is organized and how convenient it is to navigate.
This professor is a HARSH GRADER, every assignment that was given was very unclear and all over the place, a tech writing class should never be this difficult. If you love wasting your time and money take this class.
Professor Richards is helpful and patient. Her assignments are real-world and everything is laid and easy to follow. There are many assignments and they're weighted so the earlier stuff where you're still learning does not affect your grade so much. Her comments on the work help you understand how to fix your writing.
Best English class ever taken. Professor Richards establishes clear standards to do well in her class. Her main goal is to help students be successful. Assignments were interesting and useful.
I took a 6 week summer course with Professor Richards. It was a lot of work but it was very simple as long as you put in the effort. She gives clear instructions for every assignment and she provides very detailed feedback to your work. Her feedback is straight to the point but very helpful.
Great class. Her assignments are interesting and seem like something you'd do in a real business so I feel like I learned a lot of stuff I can use. The course is very well organized and Professor Richards is always available for questions. Shes very encouraging and helpful.
Great Professor. The class is organized and everything is laid out. Her instructions are clear and theres a checklist for every week. She always answers questions and explains things to help you understand.
Gives the worst vague, unclear, unhelpful, directions ever. Although I did okay in her class, all the assignments explanations were worded weirdly and so unclear. And when you would email her about the assignment she would respond with an equally as unclear response and would walk around you question instead of just answering it.
My favorite class at HACC. Her assignments are interesting & easy to understand. She gives detailed, helpful feedback on papers and gives you the opportunity to revise a paper for a better grade. She answers emails right away and explains everything very clearly. It's difficult not to earn an A in this course if you put in the effort.
This was my first class at HACC and I really liked it. The professor really cares about your success. She explains everything and gives you checklists with links to everything you have to do that week. She gave me very helpful advice on my papers and was just generally easy to talk to.
This was an awesome class. Professor Richards gives lots of helpful feedback and is easy to work with. The assignments are not difficult at all.
If you want to learn business writing, take this class. It's a lot of work but Professor Richards is caring and willing to help. If you want to slack off and do as little as possible, stay clear - not a class for the "I just want a C" seekers.
Overall this class isn't awful its just extremely hard to understand and nothing gets given back.
Absolutely horrible professor. Took English 1 online in a 6 week session over the summer to get it out of the way. Huge mistake. This class is graded entirely on 3-4 papers. The instructions for the papers are completely unclear. When you email her for help or an explanation of the instructions, she responds with an even more unclear/vague reply
Good class. 4 papers and discussion board posts on what you read. Her comments on the papers are helpful and you can rewrite one at the end of the semester to improve your grade. Course is laid out really well so its easy to find everything.
There were so many unclear grading instructions. Emailing her about a question wouldn't help as it would just end up leaving you more confused. While I ended with an A, I received a poor grade on an argumentative essay because she didn't agree with my opinion. Don't choose this professor if you aren't willing to write on what she feels is right.
Good class. She really helped me write better. I asked a lot of questions and she was very patient and kind. Always got back to me right away.
Everything about this class was great. This was my first online class and she was very patient and helpful with her answers. I would take her again.
Very good class. Everything is clear and organized so you can find things easily. She give good feedback but a lot of it. Some people liked that but I think less is more. She answers your questions right away and is generally nice.
Extremely tough grader, would not take her class again.
Professor Richards is wonderful. Her instructions are clear and she has rubrics for everything so you know exactly how you'll be graded. Easy points for discussion boards and a couple of really easy assignments.
(ENGL246). Professor Richards is okay. I wouldn't say she was actively bad, but she provided no written instruction on the material. The assignments (particularly discussion boards) were geared more toward modern social issues hinted at in Shakespeare's work than actually discussing the main conflicts and characters. I got more teaching from Google
Professor Richards is a phenomenal professor. She cares about her students & values our ideas. She wants us to explore and learn. She encouraged me to go beyond mere character studies and to dive deeper. Professor Richards has gifted me with some of my greatest experiences in my time as a student. This was my all-time favorite classes.
she is unhelpful, I get lost in the course content it seems unrelated, also, her videos are short and vague and not helpful at all to understand the topic,
This was my first college class and I'm glad I took it with Professor Richards. Very caring and explains everything well. Assignments are spelled out and instructions are easy to follow. Her feedback on my papers was really helpful and I definitely got better at writing.
I took this course over the summer during a 6 week course. The entire course is a group project and requires multiple zooms per week. This is the most unorganized course I've ever taken, causing me to miss a few assignments. This course may be okay as a full length of summer course, however I do not recommend this as an accelerated course.
The course is organized w/checklists that link to the assignment and the calendar. There's a group project that isn't worth a big part of the grade & gave me practice. We had lots of chances to fix things after her feedback so easy A. It was an accelerated class & very busy but doable and one of the best-accelerated classes I've taken.
The class is organized logically and her assignments are clear and easy to follow. I was nervous since it was my first online class and sent her a lot of emails. She never seemed annoyed and answered me right away and explained things really well. I would take Professor Richards again.
I took this in the summer for 6 weeks and it was a lot of work in a short time but very doable. 20% of your grade is about a group project but the project topic is part of most of your individual work so you're not doing two different things and it makes your own work a little easier to do. It's hard not to get an A on the group project.
I have never gotten a bad grade in a literature class until this semester. Mary Richards gives inconclusive directions and due dates, and instead of just telling you what you did wrong, just that it's very wrong. There is no real instruction, just assignments with unspecific and confusing feedback.
Professor Richards class was wonderful. The assignments are easy and her feedback tells you what you did right so you know what to keep doing and she explains how to improve so you can do better on the next essay. She also lets you pick a paper to rewrite so you can get a better grade. I would take any class she taught.
Professor Richards class is not what I'd call easy but if you want to learn business writing you should take her class. She gives you lots of chances to earn a good grade and her comments on papers explains what you need to do to improve. I'd take her class again if she taught another one I needed.
Professor Richards is kind and caring. I had a personal problem and she was supportive and helped me finish the class. Her assignments are not difficult and everything is explained and organized.
I just finished a 6-week course with Professor richards. The class was laid out nicely and easy to find everything. She answer questions quickly and the assignments were easy to understand. It was a lot of work in 6 weeks. If I had to do it again I'd take it over more weeks.
I wouldn't say this was an easy A but her feedback is very specific and helpful and I feel like a learned a lot. Sometimes the workload is heavy and other times its light. I would take another class taught by Professor Richards.
Rundown of what to expect (especially if you don't like English): - Nitpicky grader - Course is confusing and disorganized - Can be hard to get in contact with - Major Group project, some of your team members will withdraw (half my classmates withdrew) - Major project is difficult to get sources - Team Agrees: Frustrating course in general
This class was pretty useful for the first few weeks. There is a whole semester long group project that really isn't helpful to learning how to write business documents and the information is hard to find. She has been difficult to get into contact with and get feedback. Overall, I haven't really learned much. I would not take this class with her.
Very nit-picky grader. The whole class is pretty much a group project. She hasn't updated the D2L class in years and instructions for assignments weren't up to date. There wasn't very many "techinal" writing skills that I learned. If you want to learn more about how to write specific documents then take ENGL106.
Worst professor I have ever had.
Legit the WORST professor that has ever existed. Condescending, unclear about expectations, refuses to help. On multiple feedbacks she simply DISAGREED with my opinion, thus gave me a bad grade. Her assignments have little to no direction and when you email for help she is even more confusing. I am complaining to the school. RUN away.
I second the person who reviewed Professor Richards under mine. This class is terrible. She is so confusing with her rubrics and directions. When you email her to clarify or ask a question, she somehow makes it even more confusing and acts like you are lost. Do not take this class.
Barely helped me anytime I asked, practically had to beg for it by sending multiple emails to then just get a somewhat clear answer. Such a headache of a course and she constantly would read my paper or topic and just disagree with it so I'd have to redo the ENTIRE paper with a new topic.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. Very harsh grader, difficult to get ahold of, and not very polite in conversation. The class is disorganized, the rubrics are practically useless, so most of your assignments you're practically shooting into the dark. If you are registering for classes, avoid her at all costs, its impossible to get an A.
For the first few weeks this class seemed like it would be pretty helpful in making me a better writer. However, once the class started to get going, I realized how much of a mess this was. Each assignment seemed to have no sense of direction and the rubrics made no sense for grading. All or nothing for some criteria, so basically no mistakes.
Great class. Answers emails right away. Assignments are clear and rubrics are easy to follow. There are team assignments that she gives detailed feedback on and lets the team redo for a better grade. If your team member is a slacker, you can fire them, The assignments are linked to the textbook so if you don't read the book, you won't do well.
Very kind and understanding professor. I had some personal problems and she worked with me on due dates so I could finish the class. If you do the work and try to improve she rewards you by letting you redo some assignments. My writing definitely improved thanks to her feedback. This is my second class with her and I'd take another class with her.
Very organized class. All the assignments are linked in the checklist so its easy to know what you need to do. There's a team project thats laid out really well and our group had no problems getting the work done. She met with us and always answered our emails right away. If you need technical writing this is a great class to take.
This was my second time taking the course. The first professor was not the best but Professor Richards class was great. Everything was laid out and the assignments are easy to understand. Her rubrics are clear and easy to use. She gives great feedback and lets you redo some assignments (but not all). Not an easy A, but I worked hard and got an A.
Professor Richards' class is amazing. Assignments are easy to understand & organized. One review here said she's a picky grader but that's how we learned. I don't want to drive on a failing bridge because someone wrote idiotic instructions so I appreciated that she insisted we write clearly. Do the work and you'll get an A.
This is the worst class I've ever taken. The assignments are impossible to understand with rubrics that offer no value. You submit an assignment, and you don't get feedback for over a month, and are expected to fix all the issues within a few days. It seems like you are set up for failure. The previous reviews are clearly fake - look at the dates.
Professor is a very harsh and unfair grader. She also takes multiple weeks to give grades back in the first place. Also makes stuff up that she didn't list in her rubric or instructions, just to take away points from your grade. Very hard to get a 100 on any assignment no matter how simple it may be. Will find any excuse to give you a bad grade.

Instructions/Rubrics are pointless because she thinks of new ways to take away points. She expects you to read her mind on how to do her assignments. When you ask for clarification, you are met with a condescending and confusing reply. If you want to save your money, time, and GPA take a different professor. Professor Richards is the WOAT
Take this class of you want to lower your GPA and waste money. Very tough grader. Grades are given back weeks after the assignments are turned in. Would give a -10 if I could
Harsh Grader, expects you to have a master's degree in English to get 100 on any assignment or even a 90. Will bring down your GPA. Takes away points by an imaginary rubric only she is aware of, this makes the rubric that she gives to the students useless. Find another professor to take this course with. My real rating is -100/10
I beg you do not take this class. Instructions are insanely unclear. I have written in MLA in every English class, but she expects you to be a expert in APA by the end of the semester. All while barely providing much to help us. She is an extremely tough grader. There is barely any opportunity to get her feedback. Do not listen to the good reviews.
Tough grader
After reading all the recent reviews on Professor Richards, I guarantee she is giving herself good reviews. It is suspicious how grades are bad over the course of a few weeks and all of a sudden, like 5/6 students decide to say how great she is on April 24th. A random Thursday? Yeah, ok. This class is the worst.
this class wasn't my favorite. tough grading and rubrics didn't make much sense. professor richards was nice and responds quick.
Lots of reading. She gives a lot of comments on papers that she expects you to use when you rewrite your assignments. If you don't make all the corrections she won't regrade your work. She also expects you to read the textbook and the assignment sheets. Don't take this class if you don't want to work. Besides that shes kind and willing to help.
Richards is alright at worst. Positives: - Easy to Email - Detailed Instructions - Gives Feedback (read below) Negatives: - 25% of grade are one page memos (~3hrs) - 5% is research heavy presentation (~15hrs) - D2L poorly laid out - Feedback super detailed, hard to discern what's important Not ideal if you struggle with heavy work and detail.
Professor Richards was very nice but this class just wasn't for me with how the grading rubric turns out. You can either get 10 points or no points. No partial credit
Awful professor. Directions are vague, and one general rubric for the entire class. She doesn't stick to the rubric - arbitrarily docks points on things that aren't stated in any instructions. Tells you to “write technically”, then gives no examples and the criteria for such is not stated anywhere. Something needs to change…
bad bad bad bad
Requires you to meet every week when the class is supposed to be asynchronous. Impossible to receive a 100/will find any excuse to dock points. Expects you to cite GRAMMARLY. If you can take this course with any other professor then do it.
One of my least favorite profs. Difficult to talk to, makes things complicated. Few large assignments that make most of your overall grade, so if you miss a couple they will tank your grade.
Not a terrible person but unfortunately a terrible professor. Would not recommend taking this course with her. Any other professor will be a better option.
Don't take this professor, you will fail. The assignments aren't clear, and you wait over a month for feedback and are expected to fix them within a few days. The expectations are impossible. You will not be able to get a high grade in this class because she is a nitpicky grader. I agree with others, alot of these positive reviews are fake.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. I have never regretted something more. She takes weeks to grade assignments so when you submit the next assignment you don't even have her feedback from the previous one. Tough grader and unclear requirements.D2L course shell was difficult to navigate. I could keep going. Just trust the bad reviews please
Ironically for a professor who teaches a course on technical writing - a course centered on clear and concise writing - Richards does an incredibly poor job writing in a clear and concise manner. Do not take her course online, it is confusingly put together and lacks structure. Avoid at all costs, delay until a better professor can be selected.
Very few items graded throughout the semester and no extra credit offered. Lots of fairly long articles to read. While this class was online, the instructions provided sometimes felt contradicting from page to page as assignments can sometimes stretch over multiple weeks.
TERRIBLE! seriously listen to the bad reviews. So, so nitpicky, wants you to write as if you were living in her mind. If you want a lowered GPA take a course with this professor.
Very caring and responsive to questions. Rubrics are easy to understand. Feedback is detailed and helpful. Lots of easy assignments so more chances to raise your grade. If you're right on the edge of a grade she bumps it up if you've been doing the work. Much better than most classes ive taken.
I wish I knew about this website before I registered for this class. Let's just say, many tears were shed. I am a straight A dual enrollment student through hacc, and scored a D in this class. Professor is unreasonably picky, and will pick apart even the slightest things in assignments. I would not recommend.
Avoid this professor! Despite being a straight-A honors, dual enrollment, and AP student (4.6 GPA), I got a D. She is overly picky, criticizes everything, isn't clear in instructions or feedback, links to other sites, and takes weeks to grade, delaying feedback for the next assignment. Her assignments and rubrics were also littered with errors.
I like how helpful she is. This class challenged me as a writer, and introduced me to new concepts. She would always answer my questions and provide helpful guidance. I apologized for asking so much, and she'd say it's okay to ask questions, that's how people learn. She really cared about my learning. Her feedback on assignments was great
Loved this course, many of the readings overlapped with other classes I had, which led to multiple connections. Professor Richards was very kind and candid with everything, but still cared about her students' learning.
She is an awesome instructor!! Ms Richards worked with me an my assignments when I was sick and gave me alternative plans. I truly appreciate her understanding. She's very nice and gave great advice for my work.
This professor is incredibly strict and will nit pick the smallest parts of your assignment. I am a straight A student and she just would not give me a good grade. I submitted an assignment early, she gave feedback, and after fixing all the things she mentioned, she gave me a C+ on the assignment. I would never take this professor again.
I've been on the deans list every semester I never had any issues before taking this class. My first failed course, I would turn in work early she would fix it and then I would still recieve nothing more than a C in her class. Just a waste of time and money.
