one of the oddest teachers i have ever had. She is a great writer and tells it how it is. She brings her personal problems to class though and makes you feel bad for her. She misses a lot of class which is ok but homework is still due.
Yeah she's quite odd... she misses class a lot but she has some pretty interesting personal stories... very touching. umm... just do your work, you'll be fine. She's not very hard...
she was funny.she let u write about whatever u wanted to. she didn't show up a lot during the beginning of the semester so it seemed like we didn't have much to do until the last month of school she piled work on us.she is also a hard grader.

She changed my life I luv her u will to shes easy Trust me.
Awesome. She's very interesting and makes you work in upper division classes. Definitely learned a great deal about teaching.
She's a great teacher but she doesn't show up to class at times. Her assignments are easy and she goes off subject at times. She tells her story about her kids which is very interesting!! I had her I ended up slacking off but I was able to get the essays done and turned in on time before it was due.
She is a really cooky lady but still really nice and helps you a lot on your essays. There were only 3 essays due and you can have her revise them as much as you want. She is fun in class and is light hearted. she is an easy grader. Definitely take this class. You'll be entertained!
She is super cool!!! All you need to do is keep up with your own deadlines and you'll be fine. Very great teacher for freshman. She does challenge you but hey, what's college about?
She is pretty much the coolest lady ever, and writing about whatever you want and setting your own deadlines is pretty cool...but somehow I get the feeling that semester grades are just sort of given arbitrarily..I was pretty surprised at recieving a C..but hey, take her, its a trip (when she comes)
THE BEST TEACHER EVA!y? cuz she knows that life sux, and she can relate.she's writing a book about her life, that means it must be something CRAZY. she's so swt. she still remembers me when i run in2 her on campus.she's a certified priest!HOW COOL is that! NO HW! just show up 2 class, it's always fu
this teacher is the best!!!
she so easy, its fun, do alot of group work, but afterall shes nice and very funny, no final exam if late just bring her coffee,
her name is maryscarlett but wants u to call her something else i 4got i think...she's weird but very very easy...if your late for class just bring her coffee... her jokes aren't funny but u laugh at her b/c she tries to be funny.. very easy class you set your own deadlines...makes the class feel like family. i really recommend her. easy A.
She is an awesome teacher. She is so understanding and helpful. She tells you about her life and her kids. She has funny stories and she is just laid back and cool. You should take her.

She is funny and amazing!!! i am always looking forward for this class
Take this class if you want to learn creative ways to write, and articulate your thoughts. She is amazing as a professor and a person. If you are willing to work she will go out of her way to ensure you get the A. She is awesome...
love thsi class she is sop funny and so no pressure freak...love her lotsshe really cares about her students
amaris is very sweet and funny. she really care for her students. we have 3 essays to write total and you get to pick the TOPIC! also the due date too! awesome! she sometimes cancel class though. BUT she is the coolest ever. i love her. always looking forward to this class!!!!
WE <3 MS!!!! She is the most amazing teacher and person ever! Her holisitc pedogy, care and concern for her students, and outgoing personality, make her class educational AND enjoyable. No one else compares to her.
amazing lady. please take her she is so nice.
She's aweomse, quirky, but awesome
She is so cool! I loved this class because I can be myself in my writings and not be judged by it. She's real and really does care how you do in the class. She read a part of her book(don't know if its already out) and she opened up that way.
She seems very odd when you first meet her, but she is a very nice lady. She talks about her life a lot. Her class seems easy at first, but there is a lot to do. Class gets out early a lot. She is a very good writer, and helps you become better. She cares about her students a lot, and really wants to be your friend.
SHE IS A GREAT TEACHER. SHE REALY CARES ABOUT HER STUDENTS AND I LOVE HOW OPEN SHE IS. YOU GET TO DO PEER GROUPS AND READ YOUR ESSAYS AND GET FEEDBACK. AWESOME TEACHING TECHNIQUE. WISH I HAD HER FOR EVERY CLASS!
She is an interesting woman and gives very good feedback/critique on papers. She will help you grow as a writer. In class you don't do much and she rarely ever "teaches." Fun and helpful class all around. Easy if you just go and write and be yourself.
Awesome lady! If every professor in college was like her, no one would get bored. She's very open with her students and gives the best feedback. I've never liked writing, but she lets you choose your own guidelines and style of writing. She lets you be who you really are. Best english class ever!
This is one of my favorite professors of all time! She is extremely caring and helpful and just overall genuine. She really cares about her students and will accomodate them in any way possible. A lot of writing at the end of the semester, so don't procrastinate in the beginning. Take her and you will immediately enjoy her class!!!!
mary scarlett is just WONDERFUL! i had her class about a year ago... actually spr.06 and i still see her around and she know who i am. she's very open and creative and she lets students work creatively and independently. her style of teaching helps us to find our style of writing. take her class! no regrets
Very cool teacher, kinda weird at first but youll get used to it. Very Helpful and cares alot about her studetns even if you dont go to class.
Mary Scarlett is amazing. This is not the typical English class filled with formula essays and boring lectures we've already heard from high school. She mandates creativity. Unlike other professors, she is so personable and just shares so many wonderful stories with you. Just show up to class, trust me, you are not wasting your time.
Took her in Spring '05. Totally awesome teacher. Loved her method; it was very different. You will write creative essays, giving you awareness of issues you never thought about. She's a little weird/cooky, but I think that's what makes her & CLASS so interesting.
simply the best college teacher i've ever had. she will change the way you think about writing and outlook on life. such a quirky and amazing lady!
OMG take her class
I took her two years ago and let me tell you...she is AMAZING and INSPIRING! She is absolutely GREAT!
Professor Amaris is an absolute joy to have as a teacher. She's not your typical professor but you can tell she really cares about her students. Her class is relatively easy and laid back. Just attend regularly and do all the papers and you should do well!
Excellent everything.Great woman that will inspire you.
She is great! Very laid back. Grades a bit hard but as long as you do as the rubric says you are good.
Amaris was AMAZING!! Best Professor I have ever had. She keeps you motivated & collected. I cannot wait to take her for L/ST 400. You will work in the class, but you will ACTUALLY walk away with useful information for your classroom. LOVE HER!
MSA is great! Her method of teaching is probably different from what you are used to, but don't be fooled. Her class is great. She inspires you in so many ways. We should have more professors like her.
Take her !
She is really easy going and as long as you stay up to date on your essays and assignments you'll be fine.
This class is not a walk in the park. I'm not very good at English but I managed to get an A, and trust me I tried really hard. We don't have deadlines for essays, but trust me, don't procrastinate she will revise your essays as many times as you want..I think I had her revise like at least 3 times for all of my essays.
Amaris is a wonderful individual. I took her for ENG 309 as well as the capstone course. She expects you to perform to your best ability, and is there for you every step of the way! If you allow yourself to enjoy her quirkiness you'll have a blast!!
AMARIS is amazing. She not only teaches you how to be a better writer, but encourages her students to find themselves. She reminds me of Phoebe from friends - someone you always wanna be around. Positive attitude, motivating, willing to help you in ANY way that she can. Definitely loved her.
She is the best teacher I have taken in CSULB she is very helpfull, fun and interesting. her assignments may be difficult but she gives a little bit of them and enough time to complete!
This professor is pretty chill and kinda weird but in a good way. She doesn't give many assignments and they're pretty easy, the only hard assignment was the bibliography due at the end of the semester.
The posts that say Amaris is "laidback" are true, but don't be fooled. This class was the most work I have ever done in a college course. EVER. It is 4 units, but should be 8. She grades hard, demands perfection, (even though her handouts and syllabus are full of grammer and spelling errors), and the syllabus does not have due dates for assignments
She is such a great teacher! Really made me enjoy english and become a better writer. Take her and you willl love her as much as everyone else!!!
A professor I was privileged to have during my first year at CSULB. Cares for her students very much and wants them to improve as both individuals and writers. Two essays (she revises them as much as you want before turning in a final draft), and an end of the semester project called an Annotated Bibliography. I'd definitely take her again.
MaryScarlett is amazing! I loved going to her class she made english such an enjoyable subject and she is such a pleasure. You get so many good vibes just being around her. 3 papers which are super doable, one about something personal and 2 assigned reading paper but are really as well. Allows you revise as much as you want. No final :)
Amaris is great! She genuinely cares about her students. You can tell she loves to teach. The work wasn't too hard, and it is geared towards upcoming teachers, which I enjoyed. Amais truly gave me a new meaning to literacy and teaching. Absolutely loved her!!
She will talk about you to other students negatively. Very shallow. She doesn't care about your personal life even though you can be going through it.
Amaris does not want you to write for her, but yourself, she is not hard because she puts it on you when (on specific assignments) you want to turn in material, she lets you go to her to edit your papers, there is not a lot of work, but if you put it off to the side it piles up on you! We did these lit circles in both classes so reading is a must.
She is very nice, but does not actually teach. She believes in "peer teaching." I also don't think the workload was appropriate for a 300 level class. My 400 level class had less work. There were 2 papers, 2 reading journals (make sure you work on these throughout the semester), 4 novels to read, 2 lit circles, and 2 lit circle presentations.
She is okay. Very free-spirited and a major hippie. Very unclear when it comes to explaining assignments. A lot of busy work and writing. Tough grader.
I am a 4.0 GPA student. This is the only class I've taken that I'm worried about not getting an A in. Amaris doesn't teach. I learned nothing from her. We worked in groups while she sat & did nothing. She is a VERY tough grader, especially for a 300 level class. All work is busy work & we must "reflect" on all assignments. (again, learned nothing).
Awful, awful teacher. I have never had to cram so many assignments in one semester. Her grading scale is very vague and she can be very rude to her students when they ask questions. Please heed my warning and look for another teacher. Would not recommend.
She is so funny and cool, but it is extremely misleading as far as her grading criteria goes. She specifically said she hardly ever gives A's. The class is extremely unorganized and confusing, and it seems like a breeze because she waits until the last month to assign and explain everything. Extremely critical and unforgiving with essay grading.
She is a Nice individual, however she really has to analyze herself in order to realize the confusion she sheds on her students. The class is pointless. Why? she wants to enforce you to be reflective and write in such manner, however never shows you how to do that. The poetry circles are a waste of time. She should give examples on how to write.
This a group rev. (GROUP) M.S.A if u read this I hope this helps u understand how important it is to realize how verbally influential u r, but not physically. We need u 2 teach us, not surprise use with assignments you did not guide use through. Change things up more. Poetry circles are not always about poetry and that makes us not want to show.
I am an 'A' eng- lit honor SENIOR & she does not teach, nor prepare u 4 the work she requires from you. Very nice, but misleading. She is so easy going & when i would ask her to look over my assignment b4 turning them in, she would say things like -good yea thats right- & bam return with grades of a C! Her philosophy, she stated is u teach urself
Nice, but horrible grader trust me u will get a C on ur papers even if your an A student. Someone needs to wake her up and let her know she has to do some teaching at least. She never taught ever! she has potential to be a great professor but everything we did was so pointless. Don't be fool by her chill personality she is a hardass. Trust me!
Very tough grader. She wants to push you to be a better writer. She is there for you. She is a fun teacher and cares about all her students. Be prepared to write many reflections on your own work. Lots of projects thrown to you at the end of the semester. Very open with due dates. SERVE is required for this class. Good readings for future teachers.
She was amazing! A class you actually want to show up for. She honestly just wants to see that you're genuinely trying. So take advantage of all of the extra opportunities she gives you to revise your work. You get out of the class what you put into it.
Prof. Amaris is not for everyone, but if she is for you, you will absolutely love her. She is definitely a difficult grader on essays, but she ultimately wants you to succeed and will give you an opportunity to revise. As long as you take her classes with an open mind and ask for clarification when you need it, you'll thrive.
She is a very tough grader with no clear grading criteria. Lots of assignments thrown at you at the end of the semester. Very stressful class.
Way too much work thrown at you at once. She claims it is to teach you how to manage your time, but with 3 or 4 other classes all doing the same thing... it's ridiculous. Class was boring, and spent time in class that I could have used at home working on her crazy assignments.
I loved her and this class and learned so much, but her grading makes no sense and is way too hard. Her pacing is off too; no work in the first half, onslaught of work in the second half. A wonderful class with a really frustrating end result.
She was a really nice lady, but her grading on assignments was brutal. Youd write thinking it was an A paper and when she finishes grading it it comes back as a C-. Ive never struggled with an English course before her class
She's passionate, inspiring, and she cares about her students. However, she doesn't give clear deadlines, grading is a bit random and unpredictable, feedback is either awesome, or non-existent. . . it's hard to know where you stand in her class
Beware, She does come of as caring and spiritual but she doesnt really just cares about her self image. She isnt who she seems or who she wants to seem to be. She gives vague direction or no direction then expects a lot From your work. You do not learn much but what you read in the text, the topics are very interesting.
Awful professor, learned nothing out of her lessons. She teaches off of quotes. The required texts are good. Do not take, she is not specific and had strict expectations.
Professor Amaris is an amazing professor. She is a hard grader, but allows you to turn in your paper before the due date for feedback. Her passion for teaching is evident and so motivational. She is a fast grader and replies to emails very quickly.
The entire semester she has been very unorganized and has never been clear on the assignments so no matter how hard you try you fail because she didn't explain the directions well.
Amaris is an amazing professor who will help future teachers so much. She is caring and extremely understanding, but will make you work super hard to earn your grade. There aren't many things that this course is graded on so you must do your best in all the assignments. The course is very difficult but will really make you think and reflect deeply
She is a very TOUGH grader.. You have to write about something super personal and she grades hard on it. On top of that, all of the "homework" will pile on so don't wait last minute and ACTUALLY buy all books that are required. You WILL need them. She's very understanding, but I had to question myself why I was still in her class, didn't learn....
Recently took professor Amaris for English 410/510. Her teaching style was something new but it made me feel more comfortable with my style of writing. She teaches you to think deeply about what you write and to have a passion for what you detail in your writing. I would take her again! Put in the effort and you will do just fine!
She wants her students to do well but makes you work for it. She has super friendly energy and you learn a lot about education and yourself in this class. Readings are done in groups so it isn't a lot. A few papers that you can revise but she is a tough grader. A professor I'd take again despite the work being challenging, but in a good way
Professor Amaris is a kind, loving professor who deeply cares about her students. The transition online was eh- had to axe a lot of stuff. They were unclear and all over the place on what she wanted. Due dates shifted and she couldn't remember what she would say. Hard grader but let us redo some work. At the end, we were only graded on 3 papers.
Professor Amaris is kind and shares really good life advice! Due to the switch to online instruction, our grade was calculated on 3 essays. We were only given the chance to revise the first paper. She is a tough grader, but gives great feedback. This class would have been less stressful if we had the opportunity to revise the other 2 papers.
True as other reviewers have stated she can be a tough grader. However, that is because she genuinely cares about her students being challenged in order to improve. She exudes passion and material u engage in is meaningful. This class isn't for those who don't want to put in work, but for those who want an educational experience & lasting impact
Amaris is so caring. The schedule was never solidified but that's because she wants to give you more time to turn in your best work. No formal tests or essays lots of writing assignments. Tip: refer to other articles you've read in the class to support your ideas, she loves when you make connections!
She is a very nice professor and she really cares about her students, but she is unorganized. Due dates are all over the place, we work on something one day and if it's not done, we work on something else the next day. She even gets mixed up with the assignments and dates.
Wonderful professor! She really took the time to create an environment where I felt safe to talk about anything and everything with her. Yet she was still able to keep her professionalism in place, and I respected her very much. Her grading was confusing at times since she wasn't especially straightforward, but very open to a conversation. 10000/10
Look elsewhere. Her incredibly holistic approach to your studies DOES NOT and WILL NOT serve you for other classes. Jumbles a lot of assignments, incredibly inconsistent and the material taught is based of her holistic understanding of writing pedagogies. You will write papers, just say what she wants to hear and you'll be fine.#tenuredprof
I really like Professor Amaris as a person, she is caring and rarely gives strict deadlines, but I would not take one of her classes again. I was constantly stressed because of the incredibly inconsistent schedule and grading. I got my first graded assignment after two months. Plus, she grades pretty hard without clear criteria. Needs organization.
This professor is meh. She was passive aggressive when anyone asked questions (i.e. "if you look at the assignment", "it's BEEN there") and other snarky comments are something to get used to if you take her courses. There would be actual errors in her instructions, too, so it was awkward to bring it up. Overall uncomfortable experience.
Professor Amaris did an excellent job guiding us in a class that is usually part in the classroom and part actual experience. Due to COVID there was a lot of reading in the class but it really did shine light on being culturally relevant in the classroom. She is open and genuinely cares about her students. Tough grader but gives great feedback.
If you look up passive aggressive in the dictionary, I think her picture pops up. Unclear class structure, unclear expectations, unclear rubrics. Easily one of the worst CSULB has to offer. Moves due dates without notice, wonders why students would be upset. Ugh. Preaches teaching with peace and love but is argumentative and cant take criticism.
OFFICE HOURS MATTER. Professor Amaris may give multiple assignments at once but if asked nicely she will push back the due dates. Her comments are straight forward but they help a lot. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS about assignments, do office hours, ask as many questions as you like and you will pass the class. She is a sweetheart!
I liked this prof a lot. I had her my first semester at CSULB. She can be disorganized at times, changing around due dates, but she is very understanding. You can tell she's passionate about what she teaches.
Professor Amaris' passion for the subject matter of this class is clear. That being said, the class has left me exhausted and confused. Confusing prompts and thinly-veiled insults at students having a hard time in the class. I have never been more stressed. Avoid unless you enjoy deciphering assignment prompts like they're hieroglyphics.
Professor Amaris is amazing. She knows what she talks about and she engages her students to want to know more.
Professor Amaris is very caring and well respected. She takes her time with students and gives good feedback. She is a bit tough grader so be prepared to write well in this class. She is always attentive and loves teaching. I really enjoyed this class.
Professor Amaris, is all over the place, BUT in a good way! If you have questions, NEVER hesitate to ask her! She is so nice and caring, and if you ever feel confuse, ask for clarification ... she will give to to you! Super amazing professor !! 1000/10 !
I recommend you all take this professor, she is amazing. You will have 2 big papers on a personal memoir and a cultural exchange memoir. There is group work and partner work oftentimes. At the end of the course, there is a Socratic seminar but you are not required to speak, just submit a paper portion as a response. This is basically your grade.
Cool teacher. Not very orginized and some students did not like the way she graded. You turn in everything on your own time but make sure you keep up to date and upload and save the projects because eveyone stressed not knowing if they had all the material
Professor Amaris is truly amazing! the class is very nice and well-paced. The class consist of observation hours, modules, group readings, and 1 signature assignment! If you're confused, ask her for clarification, she is more than happy to help you! If you're stuck on something, go to her office hours. She is an amazing professor, take her!
Professor Amaris is a character; bless this woman. That being said, her class is all over the place; she is all over the place. Her assignments aren't hard, per se, she's just unclear on her instructions, rubrics, and prompts. She says that as long as you are authentic that you will be fine; however, she grades your authenticity under a microscope
Professor Amaris is an amazing professor. Her style is unconventional but produces growth. She genuinely cares for her students and meets them where they are. My writing and thought process improved from her assignments and teachings. I'll take the knowledge I learned in her class throughout the rest of my academics. Take her, you'll learn!
Professor allows you to work on your own time and the assignments are very spread apart. Very little time will she ever provide you feedback on assignments. The majority of the class is her spreading her positive vibe discussion rather than teaching. 3 major assignments and thats your grade.
I absolutely loved Professor Amaris! I took 5 English classes this semester, and hers was by far the best. Her teaching may be unconventional, but it makes students feel inviting and cared for. She is so funny and charismatic. Amaris isn't strict, but your preparation in the class WILL reflect on your grade. TAKE HER CLASS!! You won't regret it. :)
This class was quite a stretch, overall it was okay but the assignments had little context and was all over the place which left a majority of the class confused. Attendance and participation matters as she is really strict about it. Professor Amaris is nice but her teaching style was hard for me to keep up with
Amazing as a person but difficult as a professor. Unclear grading criteria paired with strict grading makes assignments difficult. Can be unprofessional when confronting students about issues she has with their work. Strict with attendance which is understandable for a class of future teachers. Use her office hours for clarification on assignments.
Unclear grading standards and grades based on her own interpretations. Not a hard class but still a confusing one. I'd be weary of taking her but I wouldn't rule her out.
even though I got a good grade I would say be wary. honestly im kinda naturally good w writing, but if you arent id be cautious. her instructions are all over the place and 90% of the time no one in class knew what the actual assignment even was leaving us to kinda guess and pray. vv into peace and love, that sort of vibe, but hepful if you ask.
All of Professor Amaris' assignments are graded based on how your writing makes her feel rather than any truly definable standards. This often leads to unclear expectations and minimal feedback for her vague essays. Furthermore, her curriculum exclusively teaches theory and ignores any and all other aspects of what an English 310 class can offer.
Professor Amaris has an unconventional but effective teaching style. While assignments can be tricky, her passion for the subject is clear. Use office hours and resources like Unstuckstudy to stay on track. Overall, a rewarding class if you're willing to put in the work.
Professor Amaris is very caring and I enjoyed her class. She is a very tough grader, however, I noticed that she is tougher on the ones who don't show up to class/are very late every day. I didn't miss one class and wouldn't classify myself as a good writer but managed to get an A in her class. Not a ton of work but you definitely cannot slack off.
There's not a lot of other ways to say this but this professor is unstable. The class is not what you think it is, it's not about learning writing. It is focused solely around becoming an English teacher. Assignments are sort of vague and I didn't feel like I was getting a single thing out of the class. Don't take if you don't have to. My mistake.
