Terrible.
do not take MPA! Satantic forces are at work in her class!!

it's not if you go to england, it's when you go to england - try to avoid
alot of tedious work - boring!
She's a very knowledgeable professor, but she can confuse you very easily.
DO NOT TAKE HER SHE'S A MONSTER!
Her brilliance seems to intimidate people, not me however, I adore her.
Yes it's extremely difficult, no I wouldn't suggest taking it, yes it's worth it

don't use the verb to be ... she may kill you

turn back your going the wrong way, your going the wrong way. never take her.
Never ever walk into class a minute late..she will make the biggest ass out of you..She's horrible!!

If you liked fifth grade, you'll love this class. If you think of yourself as a college student, however, avoid this professor at all costs.
worst teacher ive ever had. if you take her, plan on spending countless hours correcting essay's, horrible teacher
One of the worst professors I've ever had. She makes you do a LOT of unnecessary work for little gain.
she is satan! avoid at all costs!
Arrogant and abusive to students. She should be FIRED. Are you listening, President McNairy?
I changed my mind; I thought she was great, worth the effort, in the end, she's not who you want to learn English from as she's very unaccomodating to student's needs. It's all about HER needs.
Dr. M.P.A. Sheaffer is an intelligent woman as well as a demanding professor. Her course may be rough at times, but college is not supposed to be easy. Trust me, after it's over you'll leave the semester-long sorjourn with a feeling of accomplishment.

She was demanding and required precision; therefore, she helped to provide me with the confidence necessary to enter my profession. I'm convinced no one knows more about British Literature than she.
Endlessly helpful and *gasp* nice when approached during office hours, an absolute WITCH in class. Especially in Freshman Comp, as she seems to consider having to teach it an insult to her person. Very good at explaining literature, but god help you if you step out of line in class.
She was a bit rough around the edges, but a very fine teacher when I had her. She was knowledgeable about the course, and seemed intrigued by various thoughts. If anywone thinks of her as tough and rough, so is life and your future boss. Get over it...
to put it simply, she is the antichrist. she gives you immense amounts of busywork. for example, you only get about 30 minutes to write a paper, then she grades it, and then you have to do formal corrections to it, all on paper. you do these formal corrections as many as 4 times for every paper.
Extremely Pompous. Get a grip lady, at the end of the game, all the pieces go back in the same box...
I can tell that Dr. Sheaffer really cares about her students. However, she seems to have the problem of thinking she is better than everyone. There is no reason for a 110 course to be the one to bring a cumulative average down.
thinks she's superior to everybody. there is a rediculous amount of busywork, and the average student would be lucky to get a c in her class. god help you if you leave something at you dorms, cause she will dock you for it.
Mary Sheaffer aka W.P.E., worst professor ever. no kidding, hands down, she is awful. boring and extremely difficult. no question, she is the worst prof at MU.
Difficult. Scattered. Unfair. Studied with a tutor to get by. Had a B+, then the Cumulative final 50% of the grade was 1 redic. essay question that was by no way covered in class. Definately getting a C in the class just because of the final.AVOID
She is tough, but she does have a human side. Our final was worth 50% of our grade which is crazy... but if you prove to her that you care about your grade and you are honest and trustworthy, she will help you out with the final score. Don't take this class if you're looking for somehthing easy.
She can come off as acerbic and rough, and if you're not careful, you'll automatically label her as a Gestapo prof, but she's really really smart and her problem is she has high expectations for her classes. That being said, her tests are very hard and her grading is too.
Okay people - this is college...no, she's not "easy" and yes she expects a lot out of you -SHE'S PREPARING YOU FOR YOUR OWN FUTURE! I tend to get A's in most of my classes and has to work very hard for a B in her's - but I KNEW I'd earned it. Why not take a class you can learn from?
Yes, it is college and we all need to put forth effort....BUT she talked more about England's history than any themes, tones, symbols, motifs, etc in any of the plays. Two plays a week, quiz every week, dramatic performance, and killer tests. I wouldn't mind if I had actually learned about Will.
If you want a good grade, you'll have to earn it. Those who like to skim reading assignments and fake their way through essay questions will be disappointed. The lady knows her stuff and will smell your "balogna" a mile away. Historical info she gives seems off-base but is critical to understanding the lit. One of the sharpest people at MU!
Get out while you still can.
she is so freaking hard. nothing she talks about makes any sense. Her tests are so hard and she grades way too hard. Her essasy are unbelievably difficult.

This is a great lady. I graduated in 1980. I am currently teaching English and I have two master's degrees. She is without a doubt the best professor I ever had. I've learned more from her than all of them put together. Yes, she is tough. You are lucky that she's still around.
This professor is terrible!! Avoid at all costs. Runs her classes as though students are in middle school. She is ugly too, and doesnt know how to apply make up. Avoid Avoid Avoid.
Grad. level Shakespeare course. Sheaffer will make you feel like a child - no going to the bathroom, no food or drink for a 3 hour class. If she knows anything about Shakespeare, she didn't share it. I felt as though I learned nothing from her - I might as well have read the plays myself and saved the tuition.
horrible horrible horrible old lady dressed in flourescent colors. she complains about EVERYTHING all the time and will spend the first 5 minutes of class ranting about something or other. she is very picky about little details that actually dont really matter. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Early English Literature; The worst class I have ever had, and the worst professor I have ever had. Her assignments and readings are daunting tasks that take hours to complete. I think she expects you to have a Phd in English yourself. This is the only way you can have a semi-good grade in this course. You cannot contact her. Avoid at all costs.
RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!!!!! SAVE YOUR SANITY!
Renaissance Literature. Dr. Sheaffer really knows her subject matter. Memorize the syllabus and you will be OK. Only 2 tests, mid term and comp. final. Attend all classes, she gives credit for class participation. She is a tough prof. but you will learn a lot.
HORRIBLE, AWFUL, MISERABLE, and every other synonym for TERRIBLE!!!
horrible horrible class. i have never dreaded a class so much in my life. she goes on about nothing for the first 15 minutes of the period and then busts out a quiz. she thinks technology is the devil. shes the kind of professor that makes you want to burn your books after the final.
Very tough class. There are constant readings out of the book, many of which are difficult to complete on time and/or understand. Most class time is spent discussing history and background information rather than the actual literature. You must study for her tests and incorporate as much information into the essays, no matter how useless.
I think she has a wonderful knowledge of the material, but doesn't always present it very well. She tends to talk about issues surrounding the literature, rather than the literature itself, which can be annoying. Overall, if you show you're making an effort she's helpful. Otherwise, don't mess around in her class.
Well, her tests sucked. Her lecture we'rnt necessarily boring, but they really had nothing to do with literature (more history of the time period then anything else), & she refuses to use any kind of technology. She knows her stuff, but really shouldn't be teaching, because frankly, she doesn't know how. She's not mean, just a little nuts.
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE TEACHER!! Stay away from her stay far away.I've had some bad teachers in my time but she's at the top of my list. She tries to be nice and stuff but she's such a horrible teacher and when I tried to go in for help she corrected my english. You never hear anything good about her. I think she should go back to England and stay.
Early English Lit: She's hard, and you have to read everything. Her lectures aren't very cohesive, but in the end if you do all the work and study hard, you can get a good grade no problem, and you learn a lot. She is a little eccentric, but you get used to it.
Very hard, very strict professor. She wants everything her way or no way.
I had her for a Freshman English class back in -94. I remember she made me revise my one weekly assignment seven times until every single correction was made. And every time I had to rewrite it, the whole thing, several pages! Ah, I hated her at the time, but I think back now and say, GOOD for HER to make my lazy butt get it right!
She basically isnt a good prof. what so ever...very very very very very very very unclear..and jsut annoying in the way she teachs and acts..
She is a mean version of Peter Pan! She even has the hat with the feather!!
Early Eng Lit: Her peter pan hat is priceless. She'll lecture on and on about things that aren't on the test, get behind on the syllabus, and then pile all the info on 2 classes before test. STICK WITH THE SYLLABUS EVEN IF SHE DOESN'T! "It's not IF you go to [insert European country], it's WHEN you go"--you'll hear that a lot. Smart but crazy.
This class is ridiculous. She expects a lot out of her students, and there is a LOT more reading than in your typical English class. She knows her stuff, and she expects YOU to know it, too. Definitely NOT an "easy A" kind of class. NOT recommended for non-English majors.
Dr. Sheaffer knows her stuff, but she's very old school. No email contact is permitted. Contact by phone, office hours, or old fashion written letter only. Her opinions are the only opinions that matter. You will learn a lot from her, but she'll treat you as if your in middle school. Expect a ton of work.
Dr. Sheaffer is intimidating at first, which is why almost half of the class will come in throughout the first week with requests to drop the class. She loves when you ask her a question in class or after and will not make you feel stupid. Also if you answer a question wrong she will try to make it have some truth. Awesome teacher. Hard!
The best word to describe her is unique. She gets off base very easily and get very far behind in the syllabus. I learned more reading the stories than listening to her. You can't skip it either because once you miss two classes, the grade starts dropping. If you can, drop her.
This professor is impossible. She teaches history not English. Her tests are IMPOSSIBLE!!! NO JOKE, GET OUT NOW!!! I didn't listen, and am sorry I didn't!! I just dropped now, after getting a F! Lots of heavy reading, hard to understand. Very difficult subject matter. All around, just impossible. Do not take!!!!
Everyone hates her because her class is hard. Yes, it is, but if you read the pieces, take notes and pay attention, the class can be fairly easy. Attendance is mandatory and she expects you to know your stuff. Heaven forbid a professor asks something out of her students... I wouldn't recommend unless you're an English major.
Dr. Sheaffer is rather nice when you make an effort to see her during her office hours. However, if you do not want to work, DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE! There a lot of readings from the text and supplements, and one is expected to know all the history along with it. It is a difficult course; only take it if you're an English major or forced totake it.
Dr. Sheaffer is intimidating, but she's not out to make you look dumb. Participate in class, volunteer to read aloud, and for the love of God READ!! She knows her material, and when you're finished, you'll know it too.
Do not take her unless you absolutly love history and english. She is awful, she doesnt have email so you can never get in touch with her and she is so strange to talk to. Her class is really hard and you will hate her while youre there. She keeps you late and bores you to death. her out fits are funny tho
She's a tough old bird, and you will learn A LOT. Very old-fashioned. Probably best for English majors. Read everything, volunteer in class, and do the study questions! On the essay tests, absolutely put in every work you can remember. She's hard, but not impossible.
Wow. Smart woman-- knows her stuff but doesn't know how to teach it to others. Take good notes--you'll need them. Confusing class...no idea what you're being tested on but if you know the authors and titles and general content, you can usually bs your way through an essay. DO NOT take her if you have any other option!
Only Take Her If It's a Last Resort. She is really nice in person, but her class is not only mind numbingly boring, but she gives really hard exams. Make sure you read both the lit and the history. Memorize characters, plots and dates. Put EVERYTHING you know in the essay questions.
SHAKESPEARE: Listen to others on this site who say avoid at all costs. If you don't be prepared to memorize minutia such as publication dates, sources of plays, whether text came from folio/quarto, etc., stuff that only a publishing Shak. scholar would find useful to know. Be ready to read 3 plays/week and the entire Sonnet cycle.
This is honestly the worst class I have ever taken. The amount she expects you to know is ridiculous; she expects you to make her class your priority. She doesn't answer questions clearly and won't help you out unless you go to her office. And she's rude.
if you want to pass you must read the book! she expects you to know every author and piece of work inside and out. 2 tests + the final. attendance is mandatory (2 lates or unexcused absences result in lowering of a letter grade). she forced me to work hard and I learned a lot, but I tried as hard as I could in this class and ended up with a C.
Horrible. Took her 12 years ago, and all I remember is her stupid slides from her many trips to England. Returned for my masters degree and discovered she hasn't changed a bit. Avoid at all costs.
DO NOT TAKE HER!!! Seriously, she is impossible even if you read you will still be lost. Plus she dresses like a manic and says the weirdest stuff. Do your self a favor and get out now!
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! You will read and prepare for class and still be completely lost. She jumps quickly from poem to poem and when reading over your notes they never make sense.
I had this class assigned to me my first semester at Millersville. I wish I would have known then to GET OUT WHILE I STILL COULD! DO NOT TAKE. Her tests are impossible...you basically have to find out from a student in another class what her essay question is going to be and study your butt of if you want to pass. I got a C. Worst Grade EVER!
Horrible, horrible professor. Do not take her. She treats you like you're in junior high. Her tests are literally impossible to study for. I will never take her again.
Ms. Sheaffer is an interesting woman. Her class is VERY challenging. There is no question that a lot of time will be devoted to studying for her exams which are very difficult to study for. I have learned a lot of information (most of which I do not find necessary). If you have her, be prepared to work very hard. She is a tough professor!!
Dr Sheaffer is only nice to you if you play by her rules. Tests are practically impossible to study for and you never know what youre going to get. She was nice to me but was very physically and verbally disrespectful to some members of the class that did not comply with her "rules." I ended up with a C+. I suggest to drop the class if you can.
She was honestly the most difficult professor that I have had, but I learned more from her class than I have from any other. Absolutely genius!
She was honestly the most difficult professor that I have had, but I learned more from her class than I have from any other. Absolutely genius!
Dr. Sheaffer. She is intimidating! But that is all you have to worry about. Her lectures are clear and YOU WILL LEARN ALOT. She's cultured, intelligent, and whimsical. I enjoyed her class. It is a lot of work, almost too much, but if you read and pay attention in class, you will do fine. She isn't as hard as some people make it. Just be prepared.
Professor Sheaffer is by far the WORST professor I have ever had. She is completely incomprehensible, wastes time talking about useless, irrelevant things and does not believe in lecturing at all because "it spoon feeds students." She babbles for two of the three hours I am in her class and is crazy. Whoever gave her he Doctorine needs to be shot.
Not very helpful in class. Tests had very little to do with what was discussed in class.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH DR. SHEAFFER! She is terrible !
Her test questions are vague and extremely broad, but the answers she is looking for seem very specific. The workload is absolutely intense, some assignments being 200 to 300 pages of material within 2 days. her study questions have nothing to do with the tests she gives, and her lectures have even less useful information.
Early English Lit. For the life of me I can't figure this prof out. On one hand, she was very understanding when I had a family emergency, allowing me to take the test later with no complaints. On the other, she treats you like a child and doesn't have a linear teaching path. Do not take if you're not an English major, very difficult.
Good class. Not fun. Shakespeare is not fun. Not easy in any way. She's generally not good.
STAY AWAY I can't even begin to tell you how bad she is. Paid money for books we didn't use. She doesn't help students and talks in different languages in an English class which is crazy. She's beyond rude and needs to be fired. Students are signing a petition already.
Avoid this class at all costs! she is extremely rude and the amount of work asked to do for a basis english class is ridiculous. Doesn't grade fairly and the final/quizzes are extremely difficult. also doesn't believe in technology, so no email or typing ANYTHING. avoid for your own good.
She has you read then never discusses the readings. The readings are on the test, and most of the class is spent by her rambling by her vast knowledge of everything.
This is my second time signing up for the class, the first time I dropped after the first day because she flat out said the only gender neutral pronouns she accepts are hehim, as an agender student using theythem pronouns, I didn't like that. She doesn't go over the readings and goes off on seemingly random tangents that are on the test.
She basically hates everyone in her class. She will assign an essay, called "themes" which you have 15 minutes to write. However, she expects the quality of those essays to be the same as an essay you would take 2 hours to write. 2 minor errors could a C+. You must revise the themes, then revise your revisions, etc.
Do not take this class. She is very unclear and very hard to please. I stopped going to this class with a month and a half left because no matter how many times I saw her for help I got an F. Everything was on time, I was going through family problems and was sick. I spent hours on my work and she didn't believe I tried and was rude to the class.
She failed to focus on the plays we studied and injected her own political and religious views into her lectures. I have seen her humiliate and verbally assault students for minor offenses. She carries a superiority complex that truly prevents her from being a decent educator. I'm sadden at her disrespect of other critical viewpoints.
Dr. Sheaffer expects a LOT out of her students, and she will NOT spoon-feed you answers. If you do the readings (stick with the syllabus, not with the pace of the class), and if you go to her for extra guidance, you'll do fine. Don't expect an "A" on anything - she reserves those for the absolute best work.
If you want to do well in this class, you better be an English whiz. Or if you want to be treated like you are in elementary school, take her class. She always have something to say about everything. And they aren't always nice things. Essays in class by handwriting them and making corrections by handwriting also. Prepare for some sore hands.
Dr. Sheaffer is extremely tedious when she has a student redo essay corrections. She will make her students rewrite an entire essay corrections page when the corrections have one minor mistake.
Worst professor Ive had or ever will have. Doesn't teach any material, just talks about random things for the whole class. Everything is specific and must be her way. Things she calls mistakes and errors are actually just things she doesn't like. You write in class essays in 15-25 Minutes. Correct your errors on those, and then the corrections too.
To Pass: listen ask questions/for clarification do the work respect attend class grind through the homework dont question her methods participate as much as possible even if youre wrong, still try. visit her office when you need help do every assignment no matter how pointless it seems review all your work speak properly
If you can, take Shakespeare with another professor. She doesn't go over the readings so you'll never be able to take notes that will help you, and she doesn't give enough time for tests. Expect a lot of reading and pop quizzes on the readings. Likes to rant for 1/3 of the class about things that aren't related to Shakespeare.
Absolute horror. Do not take a class with her or you will regret it and randomly burst into tears. She never stays on topic but expects you to know everything even if she doesn't go over it. If you can take this class with ANYONE else, do it. I literally haven't learned anything and the final is today.
Dr. Sheaffer is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. She basically does not teach English. Every day for most of the class we went over sentences that she would find in the newspaper or from people on the public bus. These sentences had minimal errors and did not teach us anything. After our "warm up" she would discuss her vast knowledge about everything that had nothing to do with the class. We also had daily foreign languages lessons like Yiddish, German, and Italian. She also forces you to do reviews on all your themes aka essays until it is up to her standard. So, that means 8-9 themes with 4-7 reviews attached. If this folder is not handed in perfectly you will not pass. My advice TAKE ANOTHER TEACHER IF POSSIBLE!!!!! Your life will be hell if you take her!
Worst teacher I've ever had! No exaggeration! She basically expects you to be able to write a doctoral dissertation for your essays. Even If you're a straight A student and put in all the work, expect to get a C- or lower on everything. Your GPA will DROP! She's from an outdated era of teaching, that is fortunately dying out with the teachers.
Don't take 233 with Sheaffer. She treats the course like it's 400 level. The issue really is she expects you to know everything about some 30 different readings for the exams, yet only talks about maybe 6 during class. Exams were 10 word association and an essay. The essay was 90 points out of 100, so try your best! She just expects way too much.
I've taken 2 classes with Dr. Sheaffer. Her expectations are unreasonable. For example, the last class I took with her, I got an 81 and a 90 on two tests. Excluding her class, I got a 4.0. I still don't know my final grade, because she left campus without turning in grades. The university hasn't been able to contact her. If you value you GPA, avoid
DON'T TAKE THIS PROF! It's a 200-level course and she treats it like a 400-level. There are over 100 different readings on the syllabus. She only talks about maybe 10% of them in class, yet you're expected to know them all for the tests, which are impossible with no direction whatsoever. I wish I had more characters to talk about how awful she is.
Dr. Sheaffer is a very intellectual person, however not fit to be a teacher in my opinion. You have to write an essay every other class, and she is an extremely tough grader. She gives you a homework assignment every class, but never checks that you did them. There is so much reading! All I have to say is, you will learn quick. Good luck!
I struggled with this class a lot! I had a hard time following along and focusing, she jumps from different topics and always calls on people based on their body language.
DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH THIS WOMAN. She will give you loads of homework and never look at them to see if you actually did it. You have "themes" to do every other class, which are basically essays, and when she grades them she never gives you higher than a B. I have personally only gotten Cs and Ds on everything!! GPA REDUCER
She tries to make you read 20+ authors per era, half will be discussed in class, half will be tested on. She treats the course like it is an independent study and discusses things that are extremely off topic (then mocks you for saying something). Also a tough grader; she refused to give out A's because "it implies one has nothing else to learn."
Boring teacher. She can rant in monotone for hours about the most off-topic subjects. She grades everything very harshly, although she will give you good feedback and reasoning. She assigns homework often that she rarely checks, and assigns pointless large assignments outside of class that require you to travel off campus.
No electronics allowed for any work aside from research outside of class, indecipherable grading system, rambles so frequently you cannot tell what your actual homework assignments are because she's rambling about some unrelated event she was reminded of, and has made multiple racist statements in class.
Not an engaging class. There's no point to the lectures given because she rambles on about unrelated topics several different times a class period. No technology whatsoever. Had to write all 9 themes in pen. Gave us several different homework assignments a class period but doesn't go over them until the very end of the semester when thy're needed.
Worst professor ever. Do not take this class. She needs to retire. She is disrespectful to her students. She acts as if she knows everything and makes you feel stupid when she is the one that makes no sense. She grades you well only if she likes you. Her assignments make no sense. This class was TERRIBLE.
Good warm up exercises.
Professor Sheaffer was not only difficult to communicate with in person, but hard to get ahold of outside of class. Overall, I don't have anything that I have taken out of the class. She is a VERY tough grader and expects a lot from you in a short period of time. If you are wanting an easy course do not take her any class with her.
