very funny and class is enjoyable to go to
You have to write a lot of papers, be ready. Have to write a 20 pg research paper too. Did I say write a lot.
This class is awesome! It's really interesting and fun and you get to study issues that apply to you. It's a great class!
wonderful teacher - makes class entertaining. Grades fair.
Great prof for athletes she'll go easy on you if you have to miss class for school trips
I Love her!! Shes super funny, and a blast!! I totally recommend her! Shes so fun, and the class is just really interesting! Coming from her, things make total sense. She definitely makes me laugh!! You are missing out if you dont take this class!!!
Class sucked because you had to write write and write. Should have gotten a better grade then what expected.
very entertaining
She is awesome! She doesnt teach out of a text book but out of real life situations. If you go to class(which is fun) and do the readings you will get an A.
Very very very nice lady. Always brings humor in to class and makes you memorize concepts not like facts and such. Keeps you intrested in class, usually dont have to do the readings if you go to class, and still get B's on all the tests.
She's great! I never laughed so hard in class before...she really makes things interesting. Also, there's only 2 papers-she tells you exactly what she's looking for. Tests are REALLY easy if you read (doesn't use a text book) and attend class. GREAT PROF
She made class fun because talked about things that everyone already knew the answer to...things that happened in every day life. her tests are extreemly easy, no studying required.
Easy and fun class-good one to take if you need a break from the normal classroom atmosphere. discuss real life situations which helps relate info...very funny-talked about some...interesting concepts
THESE RATINGS MAY BE FAKE.
Great teacher, Easy and fun. Love to listen to her she makes class interesting for me. Tests are great but don't miss a class or you miss out and make sure you read before class
Dr. Stalp is a very funny lady! I love going to class she brings up concepts that you love to talk about. Tests are easy, there are 2 papers and a ground project. Papers are kinda hard, take time on them. she is VERY helpful, you takes time our for your questions. Highluy suggest her! Great Clas
Stalp keeps things relevant to our everyday lives. She utilizes materials that are interesting. She is flexible and understanding to students needs. She does expect her students to be up to par on her several short dail course readings though.
we have really fun discussions and she is a funny person. go to class cuz most of the test is about things we do in class. she rules take her!
Funny and interesting teacher. Lots of writing involved but as long as you agree with her you'll get a good grade on them. The weighting scale can hurt your overall grade...
she is so awesome! take a class with her if you get a chance! Very cool, smart, and funny! Prepare to work, but preapre to be entertained as well :-)
Great professor! She is always fun and interesting and brings up great discussions! Three tests and a few papers but they aren't too bad! I highly recommend taking her class!
Very good prof. Learned a lot and I really didn't care coming in. She speaks at your level. Awesome prof. Highly recommend to take her!!!!
As long as you agree with her ideas, you'll do fine. If not, look out because all other ideas are "evil" and will be graded much lower even with good arguments. She thinks she's great. Sometimes class was interesting and is pretty easy, but look out if you have your own opinion!
She was a great teacher to take. She made the class interesting and was very funny. The tests are a bit hard so make sure you study and read/go over the books she requires for the class.
I don't know where people say she is hard or dislikes you for what you believe. She made class so fun you wanted to attend. She has some awesome opinions and Ideas it really makes you realize things. Tests are not that hard. Readings are fun things to read. Def take her she is awesome.
This class isnt too hard, lot of readings, couple papers, and tests. She seems bitter & is very sarcastic so its kinda hard to know when she's serious. Info taught is mainly generalized opinions, decent class.
Dr. Stalp is one of the best UNI has to offer- she knows what she's talking about and she knows how to make a class fun. One of the most open minded professors I've had. She's very helpful and will explain a concept to you in terms that you can understand. Tests are pretty straight forward and her papers let you decide what you want to write about.
Dr. Stalp is a great professor! I look forward to every class. She's smart, funny, and makes me think.
Fun and interesting class, she made the concepts easy to understand and tests were fairly easy. Must attend though, attendence is taken!
While her class was easy and the books were interesting, she was not helpful at all. Thinks she is fostering critical thinking when she doesn't help her students with their projects. Thinks that negative criticisms of her teaching are indicative of her success and uses them to justify her persecution complex. Very condescending.
She is very sinical. obvioulsy has no love life. she asks the question "right?"after every sentence.she can be a b*tch and treat the students like 5 year olds, but she most of the time makes the class interesting. hates when class doens't talk, doesn't really have class set up for discussion and most the time you dont no if shes just being sarcastic
Great professor, really learned a lot and would recomend her to anyone
Dr. Stalp was a good teacher. She makes class lectures very interesting. Read the readings before class, it will help you in the long run. There are two papers of 5 pages and one presentation. A few tests, but nothing too difficult. Participate and attend class because she takes attendance!
Dr. Stalp rocks! She expects us to talk and discuss society as it IS a sociology class, after all. Her class has made me rethink a lot about the world. Totally recommend the class!
This class is not worth your while. It may not be hard, but the professor is so full of herself. She thinks she's the goddess of sociology. She's not smart enough to teach herself, so she has to do her teaching through episodes of The Simpsons or Southpark.
Dr. Stalp is a wonderful teacher and ginuinely cares about her students. She wants you to do well, and is always available if you have questions. I would highly recomend taking a class with her, she is interesting and makes the class fun and interesting.
I loved Prof. Stalp! She made class interesting and fun. I was not a fan of the 8 page papers though...the tests were not that hard. All in all I liked her and the class.
I think Stalp was a decent teacher, don't judge her on these other comments. She does have 2 10 page papers, and 4 tests. As long as you go to class and do the readings, there is no reason you wont get a B. She loves what she teaches and has very strict rules, but it makes it easy to write the papers because you know exactly what she wants
Okay, seriously? If you hate Dr. Stalp, YOU are the one in denial. I have taken several classes with her-I make it a POINT to. She is an AMAZING teacher: very smart and helpful. If you do homework and work (THE POINT OF GOING TO COLLEGE IN THE FIRST PLACE) you'll do amazingly well in her class. If you don't like her, drop out of UNI.
She is a very nice teacher and the class is interesting. There is alot of reading but it is easy. This class was very interesting, but sometimes alot of work.
very intelligent & nice woman but lost respect for her by her work-load demands! nothing wrong with high expectations (we are at college)but there is something wrong with reading long(boring)texts that are never discussed, expecting a 25pg essay exam to be perfect when we have one week to do it(midterm week), & must believe that its our ONLY class!
enough with the honesty, respect, and responsibility stuff already...we are not children and for those of us who do not know that stuff already, they should not be at a university and probably do deserve to fail!
She is a very nice professor and knows what she is talking about. She is very helpful with any questions you may have and loves creativity. Usually if you can back up what you believe there is really no wrong answer and she accepts that. She loves to talk through most of the class but definitely makes the class interesting. Great professor!
Stalp is going to tell you about 500 times that Rate my Prof is a bad source and that I'm only writing this becasue I got a crappy grade. Not true. She is really bitter and sarcastic and brings up all of her bad expierences from the past. She thinks she is crazy hillarious and makes class seem like a stand up comedy act.Very unapproachable.
Dr. MARYBETH Stalp is AMAZING!
I really liked her. She is passionate about what she teaches and gets into it. Attendance is super important but the topics made me want to come and learn about them. The books were actually really interesting.
Maybe the reason students hate this class is because they don't want to spend their money being taught by a professor who spends her classes on a website pretending to be a student rating her teaching abilities. Stalp you signed up for teaching if you can't handle CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM get a different profession!!
I come to every class ready to laugh. She makes class awesome, and I think she is hilarious. I really like the way she incorporates pop culture into the learning process, like episodes of The Simpsons or teenage movies. Don't listen to anyone else on here; she is awesome. Best professor I have ever had, seriously. Do yourself a favor and take her!
I actually loved this class. Professor Stalp is extremely nice and accessible and is very clear when explaining something about the reading. There is only one 5 page paper, in ASA format, so really, it doesn't take that long to write. Great class with a great professor. I strongly recommend this class and professor!
I almost didn't take her class because of the negative comments about her on this website, but I am so glad that I did end up taking it. She is the best professor I have ever had at UNI. There are some readings but it is worth the effort. Please don't make the mistake of listening to the negative comments; you won't regret taking her class.
Dont take this class! You talk about random stuff and the tests are hard. If you take this class, be ready to sit in a very long, boring lecture!! i hated going to this class everyday!!!!! but its up to you, WORDS OF ADVICE: take with someone else or just dont take it!!!!
Yes, Dr. Stalp will constantly remind you that this is a bad source to find out about your profs, but I personally really enjoyed her class. She involves students in lectures, which makes them far less boring, and the readings are interesting for the most part. Tests are easy if you do the readings, I got B+s on all 4. Would recommend:)
She is very annoying! She goes on and on about pointless subjects no reason. She thinks she is god! She is very full of herself don't take her class. Wish I would have listen to the people on her
She believes that just because she likes to read, so does everyone else. Lots of reading! Dont take her class!!!
Do not take her! Stalp thinks she is the greatest person to walk the earth. She goes on about how she is a professor and not a teacher yet treats students like they are in high school in terms of class behavior. Her lectures are more focused on women's rights more so than Sociology. Would not recommend.
At first she looked like she would be a supper monster. Once I understood that that is her way of humor and that she is super smart I liked her. Her tests are easy and her papers (2) are kinda harder, not bad. I went into office hours to talk about things and she liked me and I would recommend taking her class!
Stalp is very funny and her lectures are enjoyable. although She is VERY hard when it comes to grading the 2 papers, she is very specific and you must use proper grammar, etc. she is very full of her self and her tests are ok, if you read then i am sure you will do good, but there is SO much reading! overall she is okay!
She's my favorite prof. Some students don't like her because she is controversial and doesn't take any crap from students. She goes through the principles of soc. in an organized and interesting way. Her class is never boring. The reading, tests, and papers aren't that hard. If you actually want to think in class, choose her.
She is funny and informational occasionally, but many days seems irritated or angry with all students. Her tests are easy if you read the book but she is condescending toward students. The classroom environment is hostile and frustrating for students, as she makes a HUGE deal of everything (like touring students looking in the classroom).
A huge part of her lesson deals with Weber's "rationalization" as presented through Ritzer's concept of "McDonaldization." The irony is that her class is a living testament to the rationalization of higher education.
I am a social work major and took intro to soc. I learned so much from Stalp and her class is one i would highly recommend. She wants you to learn and she cares about out learning. One of my favorite classes. Tests are fine if you do the readings and take notes. Great class
Despite the fact that it is the end of the semester and I am still terrified of her, i am glad that she was my teacher. YES, she is strict, loud, and in your face. But she is also intelligent, humorous, and fun! Study for the tests (they aren't too hard), read the 2 assigned books, 2 research papers are HUGE so don't put them off. Take her class!
Class lectures and information presented are interesting. Dr. Stalp is very knowledgeable and, although the class was difficult, I learned a lot.
Dr. Stalp makes class fun. I look forward to coming to class because she shows interesting videos and her lectures are very fun often involving the class. If you read the assigned readings you will ace the tests. It's time consuming, but very interesting. Take this professor!
Very fun and interesting class. Heavy reading every class. But the lectures are fun and she goes over the material throughly. Videos and powerpoints with engaging conversations. Tests SUPER easy, IF you read, take notes and don't miss.
Awesome teacher. As long as you SHOW UP TO CLASS you will be fine on the 4 tests. No homework, just reading. Fun activities in class.
She is an extremely difficult teacher. Even though this is an upper level course, she requires you do to do work a graduate student would have to do. She is a difficult grader and picks out every little thing about your paper. Never take her, she is hard and it sucks. I work so hard in that class and it does not even pay off. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!
Three were about 12 students that took the class and 5 dropped. When you sign up for classes late, her option is always there. She killed my passion to want to go on to be a professor and the grade you get going in on the first paper is what you will get the whole semester no matter your effort. And, she actually throws tantrums in our class.
There are readings due every class, however, it IS college so you will HAVE TO read for any class. Most find her annoying, but I find her hilarious! Very interesting lectures. I learn something interesting every class! LOVE
First, and most importantly, she admitted to my class that she writes her own reviews on this website. Do NOT trust good reviews. Dry sense of humor and fabricates problems in society. Can't argue with her either because 'she is a doctor'. Makes you hate otherwise interesting topics. Grades tough on essays. Everyday in her class is a day ruined.
Stalp wants to help you pass, but you have to put in the effort. Lots of long articles - need to be able to get the gist of them for the tests. One paper, pretty easy if you've been paying attention. Not a class to sleep through or slack off in, but you'll learn a lot and get your money's worth.
Would not take a class from her again. Very difficult and thinks she knows everything. Talks down to students a lot, wish I would have taken this course with a different professor.
Worst professor I have ever had! Avoid her at all costs. She hates men, and if you don't agree with her opinions, you are wrong. Too much writing and reading, too much work for an intro class. And she's too moody and throws tantrums. She's scary and I hated every minute of her class because she thinks she's the greatest thing to ever walk the earth
She claims people hate her because she's a feminist however, I am a feminist and I hated her. Not for her views but because she is so condescending and critical of students, she really treats them badly. She is sarcastic in the mean spirited way. She affected me badly, I wish I had never experienced her.
MB Stalp is extremely knowledgeable in sociological theories, and she is concerned with students realizing that they can be seen in anything. There is quite a bit of reading required, but not absolutely necessary. As a soc major, you have to take this class with her, so be ready to work and demonstrate understanding of theory.
Lecturer was not boring. Engaged all of the class.
Very dedicated and knowledgeable professor, she can sometimes get a little off topic but not too terrible. Overall I really enjoyed the class and her lectures. However, sometimes the assignment requirement aren't always very clear cut so be aware of that and ask if you're unsure. There are 2 papers.
She is a very tough grader. She also gets off topic a lot. Class is graded on 2 papers (1 that is 8-10 pages and 1 10-12 pages), 2 essay tests, and participation. As others mentioned, she often talks about how she is a feminist. I would have dropped the class if it wasnt required and I do not plan on taking her again.
The person below must have gotten a bad grade on the papers we got back yesterday. Also, a professor mentioning they are a feminist -- in a sociology course -- means nothing in terms of their performance. Anyway, Dr. Stalp expects respect and she will return it if you give it. She tries her best to make theory fun.
She is a very hard grader. The class consists of two papers, two tests, and a group project. She gets off topic a lot and undermines students when they ask questions. Both tests consist of only essays. Attendance is not mandatory but she grades you on "course citizenship." I did not get anything out of the class and would not take her again.
Expects way too much of undergrads. Assignments are incredibly lengthy and a little unreasonable, especially when we do not go into depth on a lot of the material. I received a good grade, but the cost of doing so was not worth the stress, I do not recommend this class as an elective.
Her teaching style is kind of hard to follow, but she's a fairly easy grader. The thing I don't like most is that she requires you to spend $80 on an access code to access online assignments instead of putting them on Blackboard. Her due dates are lenient, but you forget the class is even there until she sends out reminders.
As a Professor she isn't bad she's nice and flexible with due dates as long as you have a reasonable excuse. The course work is too much for an LAC, 8 readings all about 8-12 pages, you have to respond too 4 of them, PowerPoint and two 1,000 word essays due every two weeks, and two 2,000 word papers in the course between midterm and final.
Dr. Stalp is a fantastic professor who keeps it real. She is very laid back and knowledgeable in her field. I have high respect for her and will take more classes with her! Highly recommend taking this class.
Great professor who expects great work. Dr. Stalp is knowledgeable about her field and will give it to you straight. She can be a tough grader, but its always meaningful feedback and is willing to help on other assignments. Wants to get to know you and gives solid advice. If you want to learn, this is the class to take!
Did not grant 2 day extension when family emergency was apparent. Interesting class time, but class is pointless as everything you need to submit an assignment is online. Uses an online textbook rather than Blackboard. Also, soooo many papers. There are 25+ reading assignments and 12-13 papers total throughout the semester. Not the worst class ig.
asks for WAY to much from undergrads. The level of analysis she asks of us is understandable except that she doesnt elaborate on how deep; just to be thorough which is hard to understand for each individual student. She assigns way too much for a 2 week period/unit. Has very little structure and her lectures are all over the place.
I think the class is very much do-able, yet her teaching style is extremely aggressive and I often felt uncomfortable in class. She strives for class participation, yet her tone and responses discourage student ideas and contribution. There are many assignments about every two or three weeks that are due at the same time, making the class hectic.
Bottom line is that Prof Stalp is extremely rude and belittling to her students. It's a shame because I really enjoy the way her class is set up assignment-wise, but her bad attitude towards students who are more often than not just taking this course to fulfill a LAC requirement completely ruined it for many of my peers and I.
If you lack emotional intelligence, perhaps do not take a course with Dr. Stalp. She is witty and engaging in her lectures, but I would agree aggressive with the material. As a sociology professor should be imo. This course covers serious stuff with real life applications. Dr. Stalp challenges you to be aware of your social impact.
Stalp is a horrible person and teacher. She is very rude to students and made this class a lot less enjoyable. She assigns an unnecessary amount of work. I will never, ever take a class with her again. If you don't have to, don't.
Professor Stalp assigned so much busy work, that alone made the class difficult. The lectures were very biased and felt more like propaganda. Every time I attended a lecture, I felt like I was being indoctrinated and force fed nonfactual information.
This professor gives SOOOOO much homework and not enough time to complete it. As soon as you feel caught up you will receive 7 more assignments. There's 1000 point possible to get but she grades hard so don't expect to get them all. Unless you really like learning, reading, and writing an extreme amount of papers probably don't take her class :)
Assignments are set to be due all on one day for each unit. If you time it out right its nice, but it is a lot of work (4 reading responses, 2 essays, and a power point). You need the textbook, you use it as blackboard. Its all lectures and she takes attendance everyday but its not graded. She was okay. I feel like I learned something from her.
