Great professor! She would have us watch documentaries and movies which kept the topic interesting rather than just lecturing over the book. There was a decent amount of reading so prepare but the textbooks are interesting compared to other history textbooks. Very passionate about the topic which helps keep students interested! Nice person too!
Somewhat of a tough GE for a 100 level course. 1 midterm (15%), 1 final (15%), 1 paper (30%), the rest is quizzes and discussion. Hard to study for the exams but it seemed like the midterm was based on the discussion board questions and online quizzes. There are 14 or 15 discussion and online quizzes. Be prepared to study hard for the exams.
Stout is a super entertaining woman who definitely cares about her subject and her students. Real with her students & what she expects from them. She doesn't take any BS and will fail you if you do not put in the work. However, if you show interest, she'll notice. She's a cool lady. I took this pass/fail expecting to hate it but I didn't at all!
Nice lady, tries to make class fun but, does it in the wrong way. Shows videos about every week which makes it seem like coming to class is pointless since large about of video is YouTube. Grading is a bit unfair, if you aren't specific enough, she will zero credit for that question and deadlines sometimes unclear and isn't posted on Blackboard.
Very nice and easy.
Nice lady, easy A if you just do the assignments. weekly discussion and online quiz. I recommend getting the pdf for the textbook so you can search terms during the quizzes. 1 take home midterm and 1 paper. Easy grader, just follow the instructions and you'll get an A. 100 points EC so you don't have to show up for attendance ever if you do that.
Stout is an amazing professor if you tend to listen to stories. She gives all of her students a chance to reach 1000 points, so if you want an A, do all of the assignments, or go overboard and do extra credit. She takes the time to lecture on the stuff that we had to read before class began the following week. I would take her again for 110.
Prof. Stout is really nice and has an easy enough class with most class sessions just being watching videos with simple weekly quizzes and readings. It is a lot of reading though and coming to class can feel a bit dull with so many videos. It is an easy enough class to pass but isn't the most inspiring class either.
Great class and professor, learned a lot. Offers a lot of extra credit and makes the class interesting. I missed a decent amount of assignments and still received and A. Highly recommend.
Readings every week but the textbook is very interesting and simple. Weekly online quizzes and discussion posts about readings, not hard. Research paper seems intimidating but she tells you exactly how to write it. Her lectures are interesting and she shows lots of videos and movies. If you do the work, easy A.
Her class can be a little boring because of a lot of documentaries and listening to her lecture, but if you pay attention you'll pass. The quizzes are easy if you do the reading. She offers extra credit and really wants her students to do well. She works with you if you need help or extra time on things. Takes random attendance so show up to class!
This whole class is based on online work for points. In the beginning, she just plays videos in class to watch. Attendance does get mandatory towards the end of the semester because she does in-class work for loads of points. The final only adds to your current grade which makes it impossible to go down. 10/10 recommend
I took this class online for summer so I expected the class to be fast-paced with a heavy workload. The work was heavy, as expected, but the expectations were never stated so you never knew how long to make discussion boards or the final which made for a lot of confusion and anxiety. Her TA's graded the discussion boards and were TOUGH graders.
This class was honestly just fine. Weekly zoom lectures that you could kinda just tune out and simple weekly assignments. There's one group project but it's easy and easily done in a couple hours. You read a few graphic novels. There are really interesting topics if ur interested, but you can pass with an A or B doing the bare minimum.
You will have to teach yourself a lot of the material, as the professor is very hands-off with the information. Typically, modules get posted once per week with all of the reading assignments and the writing prompts, and students teach themselves the material and respond accordingly to answer provided questions. Not worth the tuition
While the material was interesting, she hardly taught us anything. You have to teach yourself and the workload is heavy each week. Shes pretty unsympathetic to students concerns so unless youre really interested in the topics Id say take a different professor.
I really enjoyed Profesor Stouts History109 class. Weekly reading of chapters from the book followed by discussion questions and a quiz. Honestly, it is time consuming but prety easy if you do the work!
Her TA grades all the stuff, even the midterm. Hw consist of discussion questions from assigned readings + articles. some questions also came from videos. only need surface level answers to get full points on them. Does grade a bit tougher on midterm but not by much compared to homework. Nice professor, doesn't teach much but pretty easy class.
I liked her honors course a lot. She is an easy grader and assigns short reflections most weeks.
Proff. Stout is super nice and has great energy, you can tell she loves what she does! Although the reading is heavy weekly in this class, I found the information interesting and engaging. She assigns weekly discussion board posts and requires you to cite your work with every written assignment. Easy and fun A!
Stout is a great professor. Her class requires a textbook because you will need to read one chapter a week which is followed by a quiz and a discussion. Just do your work and you'll be fine.
The class wasn't hard, but the amount of busywork is ridiculous. She assigns 4 different readings every week and you have to answer discussion questions in paragraph form. Even after reaching out about her heavy workload, she replied that she felt her workload was appropriate and refused to accommodate anyone. I do not recommend her for this course
She's so nice, but tough, you can do well and keep you A or B+ for the entire semester, but she might surprise you at the end with grade of C just because she thinks that your cheated in her essay final paper, even if you were doing amazing in everything else, no matter what you are saying nothing can change her mind. LOTS OF HW &Writing every week
Stout is a decent prof. The course load was normal for an upper-division class. Each week was structured the same: a lecture (really a class discussion), readings, & then discussion questions. There is a research project at the end of the sem, which is not difficult as long as you stay on top of it. + she rounded my grade at the end of the sem :)
I took History 109 class as an online, asynchronous summer class. Throughout the class, she did not reply to any of my emails (3 or 4 in total) that asked her questions. She told the class to email her with any questions regarding the research paper, but when I did, she never responded. The homework load is very heavy too.
I took this class as a summer course not knowing the loads amount of work she would give. You are required to complete at least 2 (sometimes 3) modules a week containing 3 questions each module (all have answered each question with a paragraph). Then extra work like paper outlines and research presentations. She also gives little to no feedback.
Stout is not too bad of a professor. Took her class over the summer and it was a workload. Her TA grades the discussion modules while she does the other assignments. The work for this class is not too hard but it is tedious. Can be a bit too blunt and short with her feedback, wish she would word it a bit more nicely.
Professor Stout is one of my favorite professors at SDSU! She's caring, friendly, and respectful towards students. You'll read lots of comics in this class! And I really enjoyed taking the time to read comics! She was super inspirational too! She inspired me to go explore comics in the SDSU library and city. There are easy weekly assignments too!
Super easy! Weekly readings with weekly quizzes that aren't difficult at all. Lectures are engaging too. Never took notes, just listened. One research paper due near the end of the semester but she tells you exactly how to write it.
History has never been my greatest subject but this is the best grade I got this semester. There are readings and discussion questions each week for homework which are a bit time consuming but not hard. There is a research paper/project that is worked on throughout the semester but the deadlines for each portion are clear.
The history of comic books and representation in them, very easy & entertaining. Around 2-3 graphic novels required for discussion boards, but they can be found online and are quick to read. Final projects are a group presentation and a 3-5 page paper about cultural representation in comics. If you like Marvel, DC, even anime, this class is for you
One thing is that she did not reply to my emails at all, I sent about 3 and no reply. Discussion questions every week and doing them helps with the final! Lectures are pretty good, consists of watching movies and a brief lecture. Research project that is mandatory and many good resources to help you are in canvas.
this class wasn't awful but definitely would not take it again. it's mainly PowerPoint and lectures for the class and sometimes there are in-class activities (rarely). pretty boring but if you read the chapters and do the work you'll be fine- you might fall asleep during lecture though
Lots of videos during her lectures. If you are passionate about history take her, but if you do not like history, this class is super boring. Every single week we had to complete 3-4 questions about the reading, very strict about plagiarism.
It's easy to get a good grade in this class, your grade is mainly determined by weekly discussion boards that are 3-4 questions and get pretty lengthy. I was bothered by the fact that we watched videos every class the whole semester, and then she crammed 2 essays and a presentation in the last 2 weeks of class. The format of the class could improve
I normally don't enjoy history classes but Stout's class is actually enjoyable because you could tell she cared about the topic and is very knowledgeable. Class is pretty much mandatory as she covers much of what the weekly discussion posts are about. There's a research paper/presentation which was pretty easy and she helps you as much as you need.
avoid this course if you can. no organization and Stout doesn't respond to emails. The class is fully asynchronous and half of the assignments mention in class work and group projects? She never updated her assignments when she switched from zoom to fully asynchronous. She decided to change the rules on our 250 pt project the day it was due?
Even though professor Stout assigns a lot of homework, it is very manageable and she grades very fairly. She is also very mindful of student's life outside the course and is easy to communicate with. I would highly recommend taking WMNST 341 B with professor Stout for the preparation it offers for other upper-division courses.
She is awful with email but in person communication is fine. As a history hater, I found the class actually bearable and appreciate her enthusiam
Professor Stout's class gave me a real taste of what I think majoring in history would be. Sometimes, it felt like a lot of work, but it was manageable. If you show up to class, follow to her directions and TAKE GOOD NOTES, you'll be more than okay. As for her email, use her non-sdsu one for quick replies. She provides it.
Very easy class, and the lectures are always easy clear. No tests or quizzes, but 1 midterm paper and 1 final paper. Weekly assignments help prepare for the papers.
The class is overall okay. Very bad at communicating and doesn't respond for WEEKS. You need to follow a specific rubric and she'll tell you that you can find outside sources but don't. Just use the ones she gave you and make her happy. DB that are 500 words with replies and like 3 quizzes. Find the books on PDF version online don't pay.
Very torn about how to rate this - 2.5 tbh. EASY class - as she says on day one, if you do all the work, you will get an A. However, work is BORING. Felt like a high school history course, all homework is textbook discussion Qs (could be pulled from book), half of lecture days are just watching YouTube documentaries. Final is easy. She's nice, but
One of my favorite professors and very easy class.
Assignments include discussion boards, quizzes, group projects, comic annotations, and papers. Her instructions aren't clear, so be prepared to go into her office hours to ask for clarification. She didn't update her syllabus/assignments, so her instructions are outdated. Her grading is forgiving and she's understanding when turning in late HW.
Mixed bag. Lectures were dull and going to class was a waste of time-pretty much just same videos and slideshows posted to Canvas. TA was all over the place with grading. Homework was time consuming but fairly easy, and her structure is good preparation for upper division history, so I'd recommend her for anybody planning on majoring in history.
Boring powerpoint lectures, occasional interesting documentary. Long reading + questions with inconsistent TA grading. Free response and open note midterm plus a research project. Time consuming but if you like history in the slightest shouldn't be too bad. Professor seemed nice, also quite liberal with Ibram X. Kendi excerpt readings so heads up.
Professor Stout is a very caring teacher and it is a fairly easy class. I took this class as one day a week class and she rarely went over two hours. Attendance isn't necessarily mandatory but she does do attendance if there aren't many people in class. The class consists of weekly discussion posts and a paper due at the end of the semester.
She's so sweet and coming from someone who HATES history, I actually loved this class. Don't have to memorize dates or names or anything. Weekly-ish discussion questions that aren't very hard or long. No actual tests, midterm and final are discussion questions too. One big project but she breaks it up and it's easy to do well.
This class is very easy, however, there is a ton of work that is pretty boring to get through. Only one group project that is easy and you must present. She mostly just plays videos in class, and lectures are usually cut short. If you want an easy class to take, then take this class.
Make sure to attend each class, she has started to have in-class assignments to encourage students to come to class. Pretty easy class, only a couple of big projects but she gives the class a lot of time to work on it. If you take your time and follow the guidelines, you should get full points for every assignment.
Mary stout was a really easy professor. we didn't have any tests just essays for the midterm and final which were both fairly easy. Does some random in class participation question worth points but don't count for much, you can make it up by doing the extra credit she provides. Most of the homework is weekly questions with occasional video quizzes.
Professor Stout was an amazing professor. She gives plenty of extra credit. Does random participation days in class but can be made up easily through the extra credit. No tests, just take home essays. Really knows her stuff about history! Definitely take this class.
Despite its flaws, it's actually pretty easy- just do your work. Note that this class is NOT ABOUT MANGA! American comics only when annotating or presenting. Instructions on assignments are outdated, and the due dates are almost always wrong. In-class partnering for some activities, so try to make a friend. Also, random attendance checks.
This class is graded by assignments that aren't at ball difficult, one presentation paper, and a final. The presentation is super easy and only needs to be about five minutes. Is overall very nice and I enjoyed her class :)
Pretty easy class, but time consuming considering the amount of reading. Lectures are boring but its only 50 minutes so it goes by pretty quick and most people are just on their laptop watching basketball anyway lol. She does random in class assignments to catch people not showing up but you can miss a few and still get an A
REALLY EASY CLASS. Just do the work and show up. It's a somewhat interesting topic if you're into comics. You have one term paper at the end (3pg) and one group project that is individually graded, which is nice. Just make sure you put some effort and you'll breeze through
Professor Stout was very good at adapting to changes that are unforeseen. Professor Stout gives amazing feedback and is always there for her students. She is amazing at explaining how to improve. It is difficult to fail her class. I would take her again.
i actually really like her. she is super nice and real and she understands that history isn't liked by many people and that they are just taking it bc they need to. her grading is not bad and her assignments are very straightforward. shes a great teacher! if you go to office hours too she loves that!
The class in itself didn't give too much work, but the two discussion modules a week were graded at the highest level of nitpicky I've ever seen. I emailed her for help on one of the modules out of confusion and she literally responded with something along the lines of "read and answer the questions." Don't take the class if you don't have to.
Professor Stout is incredibly difficult to talk to and reason with. She will mislead you and does not value her students. It doesn't matter what is going on, a family member could be dying, and class is more important. Do not take this class if you care bout your sanity. Don't expect any engagement in the class. Very boring, lots of talking/lecture
very confusing and not flexible
shes cool & understands that not every student loves to learn ab history. weekly discussion modules r fine as long as u quote the textbook. class is usually a slides lecture followed by a long video or several short ones. never fully used the almost 3 hr time period, always finished class early. instructions can b confusing, but u can ask 4 help
I honestly really liked her, really funny and taught interesting parts of history. Weekly discussion questions were straightforward and graded nicely. No multiple choice or memorization at all which was nice. Midterm and final were just longer discussion questions you did from home any time. Always ended class at least 15 mins early.
Class is easy and doesn't really require a ton of work. It does get a little boring, but she doesn't take attendance and posts all the slides. Would claim that she'd take attendance and doc points but never did. Took all late assignments. Not tech savvy and would often post due dates sooner or later than intended which could get very frustrating.
Treats students like children. Very big on no phones in class. She says she will take attendance but never does. Lots of assignments and busy work, but not difficult, just a lot of research. Accepts late work no matter how late, which is really nice.
Attendance is taken 90% of the time, doesn't affect grade too much. Lectures usually done by 5:30-6, never left later than 6:15. Weekly modules due on Sunday, typically 2-4 questions per weekly module. Can answer most questions via online required textbook, need to site ur quotes. Tests are the same format as the modules, just worth more points.
She made history relatively interesting to learn, assignments are easy to do as long as you follow along in class. Lectures went from 4 - 6:40 but we were almost always out before 6.
Not only was there a lot of writing and reading, the lecture was boring and made me not want to go. Very strict about phones and earbuds too
Very easy class w/ simple 1-3 weekly assignments (some do require a lot of writing tho). Accepts ALL late work. We had a big class, so she never took attendance, but every once in a while had an in-person assignment. Lectures consist of watching 30-60 min long videos majority of the time. Only two big projects: final essay and group presentation.
As a comic reader this class was a huge disappointment, super boring lectures with lame slides and the occasional video. Easy A though, just really boring. Don't ask questions about AI use, she hates it and will get really pissed off if you ask her about turnitin (she uses it) false positives. One paper and group project, overall really easy.
Overall a great teacher, she likes to joke/chat with the class. Some lectures can be very boring(watching a long video). Many people do not show up to lectures, but being present makes the course very easy. Simply apply yourself in class and complete the homework and you will have a very easy time in this course.
Mary Stout must think she rules the world the way she talks to students. Very condescending and treats adult students like we're in middle school. Very boring lectures, and you could follow every instruction for the paper and she'll still find something to grade you down for. I hated going to class, she didn't provide a welcoming/kind environment.
Stout was an easy professor. No tests but you will have to write about 3 papers. Her class was extremely boring as she just read off slides or played videos. Overall an easy class and easy to get an A, but just be prepared to be extremely bored when you come to lecture. Also hard to access her outside of class. Not the best teacher but easy class
Lectures tend to be boring as she just reads off the slides. She also posts the lecture slides on canvas so showing up to the lectures is basically pointless. Lots of writing and reading, class is boring, professor is boring.
Really chill class if you're looking for a history or art credit. Attendance is "mandatory" but she doesn't always take attendance. We just watch videos in class and usually there's one discussion post or reflection due on Sundays. There's one easy group project and a final paper.
Was not very accommodating. Told to email her and then never responded even after I followed up. I also was confused about a project and told “not worry about it” and then was given a poor grade. For an undergrad class this was a bit absurd. Some of the material was fascinating. Some assignments were able to be made up very late and others not.
I am not even kidding, I have never once rated a professor, but I genuinely felt the need to come on here and let students know who were planning on taking an easy summer class to steer clear of this box of rocks. Terrible class structure, and is doing way tooooo much for a general ed teacher.
Super boring lectures. Kinda condescending to students doesnt allow phones or laptops in class. Very bad about sending emails didnt send out a class cancelation email until 1 minute before class was suppose to start. It is pretty easy but there is a group project which is annoying very boring lectures though barely worth showing up
Class was SO BORING. She kind of an odd lady, a bit rude over email. She requires attendance with no phones or laptops allowed. Not a fun class like youd expect. You have a group project and presentation due plus a 3 page essay about social justice in comics. You could just use your project as the basis of you essay tho. would not recommend
Lecture heavy. She only reads off the slide. Was super rude to students and talked to them like kids. Her TA's grade your weekly homework and are subjective. If you do something right and get a 100% from one TA, another TA could give you 0% on the next assignment. Reached out to Stout about this and she was so rude. Easy class but rude
Not that hard, but she isn't the warmest soul. It's best to just keep to yourself and do all the work on time because she isn't the most understanding. But the work isn't hard, and attendance isn't really mandatory but it's better to go because she says more in class than there is on canvas.
She pulled my assignment I had completed up on the projector in FRONT OF THE WHOLE CLASS and called out asking whos assignment this was and obviously I said mine and she continued out loud to critique how I had done the whole assignment wrong. I looked around at my classmates and they were all just as confused as me to how I had done the assignment
