This professor is very friendly and is willing to help you out any way she can. Class very straightforward and explains the material very well. I recommend this teacher for Accounting I
She is great take her you will pass
Not a good Oil & Gas teacher. Very nice person, heard good things about her for other classes but does not teach Oil and Gas very well. No examples and her tests are really hard. She doesn't prepare you for the tests with lectures. You must teach yourself
She is such a sweet teacher, classes end early, and if you fail your such a dud.
Tests are very hard. Very nice.
She is really an excellent teacher. you need to sudy for each session u go with her, her tests depends grealty on reading the text book, thats why she alwaystell u to do sumaries. She gives 6 pts on the average for complete attendance.
Great attitude; very positive. Tests are not reflective of her teaching. Questions must be from a bank. I found the Study Guide most helpful in preparing for exams. Fair, considerate, but not a walk in the park due to the subject matter.
Very easy teacher. I got an A in the class without having to read the text (not counting the summaries). Just pay attention to her lecture and her test reviews. She teaches in a easy style...none of that mumbo jumbo. I definitely recommed her.
she is great teacher. I would recommend her for this class. She explains things well. I would take her again for another class.
Accounting itself is not easy, but she makes it alittle easier and understandable. She gives points for attendance and homework, so those two things should help.
Sweetest Professor at U of H. She is very kind and has real world experience that helps her to teach effectively. This lady really cares if you learn and improve. She wants to produce better accountants and business people.
She is the best professor at UH-D. She knows her information and teaches very well. What she says will be on the test is what will be on the test no tricks or surprises. I've taken her for three classes and have passed all of them with flying colors.
She is the best teacher i have ever had. Her test are easy if u study and she is always willing to help. I wish i could take her in all my classes. I would definitely recommend her.
She is a great teacher! I highly recommend her! She curves, she drops lowest test grades, what more could you want?
best rpfessor ever!she cares about her students!very helpful!
Very good the best.
I really enjoyed taking her class. She really showed the students alot of respect and was always more than willing to help. After two years of school here, she's at the top of my list! -But do try to study...
If you want an easy A go for it. Her tests come straight from the book. All you have to do is read the chapters and you are ready for her exams. Besides, she makes the class enjoyable. But I still think auditing is so boring, I prefer the numbers.
Mary is an awesome professor. Not only is she credentialed but, she has operating experience in corporations. She was very willing to help her students and wanted them to learn the material. She truly has an interest in her students success and is not there just to draw a paycheck. Great prof.
excellent teacher, would recommend to take her class, she tells u to read the chapter before going to class and also to summarize, which is very helpfull, do what she asks to do, and u make an "A"
ONE WORD: THE BEST!!!!!!!!
This is the best professor I have ever had. She teaches exactly what you need to know. She is very patient with her students. I would recommend her to anyone.
Mrs. Sykes teaches like a good friend. She is patient and understanding and she really wants you to learn and leave her class better than when you entered. If you want to make an A, then it is up to you. She NEVER belittles a student and cares more than any professor. I have taken 3 classes from her and I want to take more!
Professor Sykes is the sweetest teacher in the world. When she gives each test back, copy the questions and correct answers b/c that is where her final comes from. After each test you have to give back the answer key and your test. If she knows you are sincerely trying, you will pass.
Ms.Sykes is a real caring person from the moment you walk in to the last moment you turn in your test. She will teach you the skills to get through the course and at the same time laugh with you as you look puzzled at a formula on the board. If you pay attention and listen to her you will pass.It always helps to talk to her outside the class!!!(HINT)
Very nice lady, very bad teacher. Don't believe her previous ratings. If you like learning from the book and not the teacher, take Ms. Sykes. She is unclear and doesn't answer your questions fully. She's the sweetest lady but that doesn't matter when you are trying to get the grade. Her xtra credit is the only reason I passed. I learned nothing!
Professor Sykes is a wonderful teacher, if you study and do the homework you will do well in the class. She provides a great review the day before the test and if you study you will pass. If you have a problem she will help you without hestitation. You have to put forth an effort and she will help. A great teacher i will follow her till i graduat
Ms. Sykes is one of the best teachers on earth. All you have to do is follow the syllabus, do the homework and when it's time for the test, you should get an A...If you don't, you didn't do the work that was assigned.
Dr. Sykes is a very nice lady, but she is not a very good teacher she is very unclear at answering your questions. If you are the type of person that needs examples explained to you on the board, do not take her.
She may not have a good background as a teacher but she is very understanding, nice, and a kind person. I'd love to take her again becuz of the way she treats her students. P.S say hi/hello to her when u see her in the hall. She loves that
Mrs.Sykes is the best! whoever said she doesnt teach well or doesnt have great background in ACC,u r WRONG, its the other way around u r complaining after taking ACC2302 <This is not having a Bacground in ACC :) Sorry! Mrs.Sykes was a great Auditting teacher gave clear examples+Explainations+understood her material! 2Bad couldnt take Oil&Gas W/her!
She has no favoritism. She is clear and a very good professor. She is very organized, and know what she is talking about. If you do your work, you will get the greade you deserve. If you are not serious about learning, please don't take her. As long as you do your work, you will be happy with the grade you get. Good luck!
I find myself agreeing with both sides of the spectrum. She isn't very clear at times, especially with the final exam review. Yet, she is a very nice person. You must study the book! In the beginning of the semester, she would give lots of examples on the board, but not toward the end. Do the homework and ask questions and you'll be fine.
She enjoys teaching, but we had some confusion on a couple of problems. The research paper had virutally no direction, but I still managed an A since it didn't count for much. Professor Sykes is a better than average. I would consider taking her again.
Int. II is pretty much the backbone of any accounting education, and there is not a more dedicated professor in the CoB you could take it with. This class is by no means easy, but Professor Sykes has the ability to take a tough, bland textbook, distill it down to its tastiest bits, mix it with real world applications, and serve it up with panache.
All I got to say is you will at least learn something. Will "try" to work out problems. Take good notes. She does drop the lowest grade and also give a quick review. You will do fine.
For those who have never taken class with Prof. Mary Sykes I will say two words very good. I never miss her class because I had no time to read the book so her lectures are very helpful. Always she gives a real ecamples on what we learn in class plus discussion on the examples on the textbooks. Ask questions always you will get information needed.
Boring lectures. She lectures straight out of the book. I fell asleep most of the time so I just stopped going to her class and just read the book. All that aside, she is a very nice person, drops your lowest test grade, and curves.
I love her! She is one of the best professors I have had at UHD. Her lectures are extremely helpful, and I can honestly say I learned a lot without having to stress over reading the book to understand the concepts. Just go to class and take really good notes.
very good in expaining
Great summer course. No homework. Easy exams - MC and work out problems. She is very helpful and will take time out to help you.
Prof. Sykes is a caring, compassionate, and fair teacher. She does a good job of explaining the course material and answering questions. She is very approachable for questions too. The exams are challenging but not too hard. Reviews are given prior to exams, and exams are thoroughly discussed afterward. I would recommend Prof. Sykes to anyone.
Ms. Sykes is a very nice and caring professor. She wants her students to do well and has a very structured and organized class. Do the homework, chapter summaries, and pay attention to her lectures. She is always willing to give help to her students and is understanding. Her work experience contributes to her knowledge of every topic.
Wonderful
Awesome teacher! I learned a lot. She is a very fair professor. Chapter summaries due before each chapter. 3 Tests, 1 Practice Set, 1 Accumulative Final. Buy the book and take good notes! Participate in class and she will answer all of your questions! I WILL TRY TO TAKE HER AGAIN FOR ANY OTHER COURSES THAT I CAN!
this prof. is the worst prof. i have ever taken in my life... she cant teach... to much homwork and she neverrrr explains anything... her notes are all over the place... everytime we as class tried to make a point about something she would just laugh... does not appriciate anybody... awful prof... would never take her agian... do not recommend her
To me this was not an easy class, But Prof. Sykes was available to answer any questions and clarify anything that wasn't clear. Unlike some of my other classes this semester, this class challenged me intellectually and made me look at accounting from a whole new perspective. Overall she is a great teacher and would recomend.
this is the worst prof i took so far. her notes are scrambled all over the place half of the time you have no idea of what she is talking about and she dosent give good reviews for the final we had to study 14 chapters and when asked to give a review she just laughed i would not recommend her to anybody she rates herself on here
She's really nice and makes sure you understand the material. Her exams are straightforward and fair. She gives you 5 extra points for perfect attendance. She's willing to adjust the difficulty level of the exams to match her students' needs. Overall, she's one of the best professors I've had.
Ms. Sykes is a really good instructor took it this semester and I enjoyed her class. She wants her students to understand, and class participation. She is always helping those who have question. I hope she teaches some of the other classes I need. She has 3 test, practice set and 1pg chapter reviews.
Worst professor I have taken so far. Her lectures are unclear. She is not helpful AT ALL. She's VERY monotone. If you sit in the back of the class you'll never see her face because she never stands up in class. She doesn't even bother to give you examples. Don't take her!!!!
One of the best accounting instructors at UHD. She is willing to answer questions. You must keep up with the homework. If you are working towards an accounting degree, she is a great resource. I recommend her.
Professor Sykes is very helpful; you should read and keep up with the homework but overall the class wasn't that difficult. The tests can be a challenge if you don't review and study. We kept trying to convince her to teach the other Intermediate classes but haven't succeeded yet. I would take her for all my accounting classes if possible.
Mary Sykes is one of the best professors I've had in college. She is extremely knowledgeable & insightful. Her style of teaching is inspiring, unique & uplifting. She made learning ethics fun as well as informative. I wish I could have taken all my accounting classes with her. She is a true teacher that still cares about education & her students.
I attended a summer session with her. It was very challenging because so much was crammed into a short time-period but she is an awesome professor. She is above and beyond fair. She gives extra credit for perfect attendence. She's always willing to answer questions. I love her. Every accounting course I can take with her, I will.
Great professor!!! Understanding of where the students are coming from, and very knowledgeable about every subject she teaches. She is definitely fair, and as with all classes, students who don't succeed only have themselves to blame. Prof. Sykes knows what she is doing, and is readily available to help all her students...
This professor is awful. Although she does make herself available by phone, she still has unclear lectures that leave students confused after every class.Prof Sykes rushes through material; Her reviews are terrible & doesnt prepare you for her test. She never moves from behind her potium. Only way to pass is to study the textbook and teach yourself
Great professor! You have to do the homework, read and study for tests. One of the few that cares if students actually learn and enjoy the class. Easy to contact to answer questions, etc. Extra credit for perfect attendance. Will take her for as many accting classes as possible!
Professor Sykes is the best at UHD. Her class is not boring, she teaches you what you need to learn and cuts through the bull. If you read your text come to class and do her homework you will be successfull in her class. Just like any other class, but she will explain accounting in simple terms so that the average person understands. She's great!
Love Mrs. Sykes, would take her for every course if she taught them. She's teached & explains acctg very well. If you have a question/are struggling with a topic- ask & she will review it prior to moving on. She gives test reviews before tests to help you prepare, and reviews the assigned homework problems. What more can you ask for? A+
Great techer really knows what she os talking about and very helpfull
she talks all class period and lectures do not relate to test material, she will go over theoretical topics in class but be prepare to work problems in tests, i did not like her teaching style, but i can see some students are ok with just taking the class and not learning anything
I have not learned any interested lessons or experience from her, but I have learned ideas from other students a lots. She rarely gives her ideas. Like she just be there for u. That is it.
She is a good teacher and she knows what she is teaching. If you need help with understanding the material she is willing to help. Study and score as high as possible on the 1st test (it's the easiet). She replaces your lowest test grade with your highest. Study to keep your grade high for the final. She takes a completion grade for the homework.
She is awesome! She is willing to work with you and help you in any way she can! She drops your lower grade and knows her subject! I highly recommend her!
Reading the PP Slides is just not enough or a good way of teaching Accounting. She seems to know the subject but needs to get on the board and actually teach not just read. I have to say that the little that I learned, I learned on my own by just reading the book at home. I would not recommend her if you're an Accounting major.
As a person, I like her because she nices and respect her students. As a teacher,I dont like the way she teachs. She reads out from the powerpoint. Basically,I have to read the textbook, teach myself, and memorize the important keywords. She just be there for you to see her, but at the end you learn nothing unless you teach yourself. Yes!I made B
Great teacher. Participate in class, do your work and the test will be easy.
Prof. Sykes makes you evaluate your own ethical behaivor. The worse part of her class was doing TWO group presentations on companies' ethical dilema. Test are T/F, MC, short answer and essay. You watch a video every week on corporation's ethics. I enjoyed her class.
Mary Sykes is a great professor! She helps you in any way she can tremendously! Even though there is two group presentations on companies' ethical dilema you still learn a lot of info about corporate fraud. Her test are T/F, MC, short answer and essay format. We watched a video every week on corporation's ethics. I truly enjoyed her class. I would
She is a great teacher. If you come to class and ask questions then you will do fine. If you are having problems understanding she is the computer lab to help you.
ALL she did was go over power points, it was only the last day of class she actually taught. I did okay in the class but her style of teaching is not what I look for in an accounting class.
This is my favorite accounting teacher, I've taken 3 accounting classes with her, and she is very helpful IF you ask her questions. Do your work prior to class, then during lecture ask questions. If you understand everything in the chapter and do the homework you should pull out with A or B.
good teacher! Tches from PWPT slides, you MUST read mtrl to be pass exams, 3 exams and 1 final, took 1&final in class, 2 online, prct set is due thru out smstr, wkly smry; rplcs lowest grade with high grade from the 3 exams; final is comprhnsive, easy class but must study on your own, send prct set to her she will review
Professor Sykes is not helpful at all. She reads entirely from the power point and can't explain beyond what you find in your book. But she takes attendance. Surely you can read slides yourself. She helps the ones she likes. Yes, she has favorites.
Go to class or you will fall behind. She doesn't really explain anything well. The final exam was extremely hard, because I had not seen some of the materials on the test, and since she does not write any of the tests, the wording and format is different than her quizzes.
Professor Sykes sometimes teaches well and sometimes she does not I listened in class for the first 2 tests and for the 3rd test I barely studied. I got an A in the class. Do good on the first 2 tests so that you do not have to study hard for the final. Quizzes are easy as well as the tests. PRACTICE after every class and go over the book!!!
Professor Sykes is a great professor. I took her for the summer so it might differ from a regular session review. She has 3 tests including the final and the final is not cumulative. 9 quizzes and gives HW for each of 10 chapters. Read the chapter before class, do HW before quizzes, and go to her reviews and an A is certain.
Professor Sykes is an amazing professor! Her class is pretty straight forward, go in, pay attention, READ the book and you'll do fine. her test aren't that bad, they're just the right amount of hard. Study, study, study! She gives super easy quizzes, homework, and 3 tests! It will take some effort to get an A, but overall, it's not a hard class.
Great teacher in my opinion! 3 tests, the first one is the easiest. My suggestion would be to ace the first two and then you won't to study as much for the final. Test reviews are the best !!! Easy Class and A if you will pay attention and do the requirements.
She is wonderful! I love how passionate she is about accounting! Since I hate math/accounting it really helped to have a professor that loves it. Accounting isn't easy, but Sykes is the best professor to get you through it.
She is wonderful! I love how passionate she is about accounting! Since I hate math/accounting it really helped to have a professor that loves it. Accounting isn't easy, but Sykes is the best professor to get you through it. TAKE HER!
She is wonderful! I love how passionate she is about accounting! Since I hate math/accounting it really helped to have a professor that loves it. Accounting isn't easy, but Sykes is the best professor to get you through it. TAKE HER! Like, seriously.
Accounting isnt my thing but Prof Sykes made it very approachable and understandable. Exams are question based so you have to understand more about concepts and processes and "how-to-do-this" situations. Attendance is mandatory or else you will get lost immediately. She is also always available for help if you need it. I would recommend her.
Take her! She is the sweetest and is very helpful! I would say practice the quick check quizzes at the end of each chapter and do the homework to prepare yourself for exams! It really helped me! Your grade is based on three exams, 6/8 quizzes two lowest scores are dropped, cash flow and internet projects which are fairly easily and homework on lab.
Gives really good examples in class. Really knows what she is talking about. If you have any questions she will help you with them. The test are going to be the same for any teacher you pick but her quizzes are really helpful. This class has online HW (three tries to get right) and Pre-chapter reads you keep answering questions until you get 100.
Understands the material very well, and is willing to help. Homework is straight-forward, (3 tries to get right with additional help). Tests are the same with every department. Very sweet lady; I would definitely take her again!
Lectures are long, boring, and downright confusing. The way she jumps from the powerpoints to doing examples to clicker questions is so annoying. Make sure to do the homeworks and pre-reading, easiest points for the class. Takes attendance via clicker quizzes. Tests are pretty hard.
Although her teaching style is not as organized as I am used to, she is a very sweet lady and will be there to help you out. Accounting, to me, is a class where you have to teach yourself in order to really understand the information. Put in the effort and you will see progress. I found this class to be much easier when I did the homework's myself.
Great instructor. Definitely cares about her students. She's currently the only one teaching Oil & Gas. Gives 3 tests only including the final. Test are normally 3-4 chapters. Mostly JE and a few problems. Book is a must to pass the class. I would recommend her if you need Oil&Gas for the CPA or as an elective class
Very nice lady. You have to read before class to understand anything. Thought I was getting a B but ended up with an A bc of the curve. Come to class and do the clickers, study for your exams and you will make an A.
I love Professor Sykes! She was so kind and helpful. There are 2 tests, a final, two projects, and a lot of HWPre-Chapters. This might seem like a lot of work but they don't take very long at all and also they're really helpful as test preparation. Her lectures were usually pretty long but she just wants you to understand. She'll make time for you
Very good teacher, goes kind of fast but she's the best one.
This professor is really sweet and cares about her students passing. I took this as a summer course for a month. Class is spent going over slides and practice problems but can still be very confusing. Study a lot & read the textbook. 2 tests and 1 final. Homeworks over each chapter & prechapter assessments.
I took her online class in summer 2021. She is organized, caring, respected, and sweet. She knows her stuffs and she explains it very well. She offered extra credits, also did curve, like rounding up your projects to 100 if you can get above 70. She is one of my the best Professor I took at UH. If you cannot get an A for her class, it's on you!
