She is a great professor, kinda hippiesh. She makes the class fun and is always smiling. Never critiques what anyone says and the stuff she picks to read is good stuff. Definitly one of my favorite professors.
Good teacher, very willing to help outside of class. You MUST READ the text when assigned to pass this class b/c there are suprise daily quizzes. Lets you redo in class group work on your own and revise one of the 2 papers. Overall a good class.
She is a nice teacher, but she grades very hard. Everything that is graded is basically essay and she is very critical
Great teacher. Grades hard but will always let you re-do papers and group work. She is really nice and friendly. Always willing to help out. Great class, you learn a bunch! :)
She sucks. DO NOT TAKE HER. She literally assigns a 300 page novel every week! You can be the best writer in the world and she rarely gives over 75 on most papers. So much work that you may not be able to do everything even if its the only class you take.
she is a very understanding teacher and relatively easy but you MUST read. she gives you a chance to rewrite almost everything she assigns.
satan. this woman is satan.
She grades very fair and pretty easily and lets you re-do almost everything. You do have to read the novels because she gives quizzes but, there not that bad.
Unless you LOVE literature, do not take this class. Tests are relatively easy as long as you pay a lot of attention in class and read everything. If not, your screwed.
Nice Teacher, Grades very hard if you dont do things exactly her way (which is still unclear to me). Very liberal teacher and it becomes evident as the course progresses. DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU DONT CARE ABOUT ENG AND YOU ONLY NEED IT FOR GEN ED!!!!!
Excellent teacher. Lots of reading, but generally interesting and easy to push through. Very helpful and available to talk. Lots of essays, but you can redo almost everything - just talk to her about what she wants done and you're golden. A+.
I do not reccomend Thompson for non-English majors. She expects grad-level writing and argumentation and grades accordingly. She is extremely intelligent and an excellent instructor. She is especially passionate about women's issues, and I enjoy her class and discussions.
She grades pretty hard, but allows you to redue almost everything. If you don't like to read a lot, don't take the class. If you do like to read and discuss the material with your peers, take this class.

The work load is rediculous. If you are planning on taking any other classes, dont take this one. She assigns enough work in the last 3 weeks for an entire semester. It is impossible to get above a C. She's very opiniated and liberal. i dont recommend her.
Work load is more than my two major classes combined. When you ask her about the work load she avoids the question, and yeah if you are a male she won't give you an A. Her ways of grading her 1000 papes i am still trying to figure out. don't take it if you can help it.
Personally, too hard for a gen ed lit class. Don't understand how she grades but she will let you do redos. Gives reading quizzes that are ridiculously hard. Don't take unless you really LOVE literature and understand poetry well.
One of the best professors I've had. Has high expectations but doesn't make it impossible to do well - she offers help, so be sure and take her up on it. Very interesting, and loves what she's doing. Once you get her past her reliance on small groups, class discussions are very interesting.
Very organized, she hands out assignment sheets for EVERYTHING so everything is very clear. She is always willing to help and announces that in class alot. She grades pretty harsh on papers but if you can think of a unique thesis and back it up you're set. Speaking up in class is a must!
Easy class, LOTS of work!!! She doesnt grade fairly but it seems like you will always get a low B or high C on everything. She lets you redo all of your papers but gives so much other work you wont want to.
My class focused on Toni Morrison and about 8 of her books. The class is almost structured like a book club but it is very hard to speak up in the class because there are always 2 or 3 people that get their hand in the air before you can, and monopolize the entire class discussion. I probably wouldn't take this class again because of its structure.
Prof. Thompson is an excellent discussion facilitator and fair-hard grader. Very nice, subtly funny woman, but assigns too many reading quizzes and group activities.

REALLY, REALLY helpful. If you don't understand something, she will ALWAYS be willing to help you out in clarifying it. I took Feminist Lit with her, so it obviously had a lot of unpacking to go through until I understood it (as a male), and she was really great at that. She comes up with interesting topics of discussion too.
Ew. I'm an English major and I love to read and discuss literature, but this lady just SUCKS THE LIFE out of it. You're treated like a child with all the hand raising. Everything is SO MONOTONED with NO variety. Real boring and she's very frustrating, no idea what she's looking for. What's a Women's Studies teacher teaching American Lit anyway?
Thought I would try this lady for a second time but this time she was terrible. Her favorite grade is a C and she is obsessed with stupid reading quizzes. They are very specific, like she wants to know stuff like what was someone wearing in a novel. Who knows stuff like that? If you don't agree with her views then you get a C!
I love Dr. Thompson! This is my second class with her and I absolutely loved it! Reading quizzes are easy if you've done your homework and read the book (which were really good!) Let's you re-write in class activities for a higher grade!
I took Thompson's summer online course. This cold hearted woman gave me a B when I deserved a B+. I specifically told her I needed the grade changed before fall semester began or else I would be set back an extra semester. She eventually changed it but not until Sep 11th! Now I'm set back an extra semester because of her. Dont get her she's cruel.
I LOVE dr thompson. i hate english, but i love her class. i understand everything that she's talking about and she's super friendly. she is adorable and laughs at her own jokes. she has papers and exams which aren't too hard. she appreciates it when you go to talk to her at office hours and she is really approachable.
This class is not too bad. You have 6 in-class writings, which are done in groups, which you are allowed to revise. One short paper (4-5 pgs.) and a research paper (8-10 pgs). It's not a bad class, she's probably the easiest prof to take this course with though.
If you have to take an English class, take it with her!! Dr. Thompson is really nice and helpful, always allows you to come in to her office hours and get help. Only annoyance is that the reading quizzes pop quizzes and the questions are pretty specific. But overall I would definitely recommend the class.
Professor Thompson is very nice and approachable, but she is kind of a hard grader on papers. you only have three papers, two tests, and homework grades. The class is discussion based, so come to class prepared...she takes participation into account big time (worth more than the mid term and final). I would recommend it.
She's a great person but her class is tricky. Two essays which are pretty easy. Two essay tests which are hard; she's a tough grader. Required reading for every class, a group presentation, and almost daily reading quizzes. Discussion oriented class.
This summer online class is impossible.
Although I loved the lectures, her grading is awful. She is so critical it makes you loose interest in trying. She says grades tend to get better...they don't. I tried so hard and did not deserve a B...especially because I am an all A student. Do not take this course. It would be okay for a 4th year english major, not for a gen ed.
She is very passionate and loves discussion, which is a major part of the class. There are a bunch of abstracts you have to write and two major papers. I found the class very enjoyable and took a lot away from it. She is a great professor.
I love professor Thompson! I hate english but she actually made the class interesting and funny. Participate in class and do the readings guarantee you will get an A
Eh.. alright class. A lot of assigned reading and quizzes 90% of the time. The class is really boring and drags on. Pretty good teacher, but seems to grade how she wants-- I consistently make a B (not bad) despite how much or how little work I put in
A totally awesome professor. She encourages discussion, so you get points for participation. You have a pop quiz almost every class and 6 essays to write during the course, but the material is interesting so it's worth it. :)
One of the many cruel professors I've encountered at JMU. I literally received a C on every single assignment I did in her class, despite going to office hours. Her grading was so unfair I actually had to change the class to a P/F. I used to LOVE english but this woman made me hate it- I will never take another english class again.
Dr. Thompson is a good professor. She expects a lot from her students, including active participation in class discussion. The material for this class was interesting, and Dr. Thompson is very knowledgable about the subject. If you enjoy being challenged and actually working for good grades, take Thompson.
She expects way more out of a gen ed class than necessary. Her tests are so opinionated and its hard unless you have the same opinion as her. Her powerpoints are ridiculous and have too much text. Boring class. Readings were interesting but daily quizzes were too specific for large readings.
This has been one of my worst classes at JMU so far. Dr. Thompson is dull, passive aggressive, and does not care about her student's success. She expects students to have memorized (word for word) over 20 different passages for tests. If students do not show interest in a topic in a class, she simple skips over it but still expects us to learn...
I would highly recommend staying away from this class. Dr. Thompson was extremely uninteresting, very obscure in discussion of the text, and did not care if the students did well or not. Gave VERY hard tests and did not give study guides and did not tell students how to prepare for test whatsoever. worst class Ive had at JMU
STAY AWAY!! Lectures are based off what students ask during class which sucks because we never get all the info we need for the super specific tests. You have to memorize ALL the publication dates..really going to help us in the future. the semi easy papers saved my grade. oh and she always calls people out for leaving class early, so awk/rude.
Unfortunately Thompson teaches the second half of this class and screws everyone over. Exams are nearly impossible and ask questions that have no meaning to the literature. If you can avoid her, please do.
I liked Dr. Thompson. She presents a good class for English majors or for a General Education requirement. She provides study guides for all of the tests and they are very easy. She has a difficult time managing huge classes, but she is so sweet. The only hard part are some of her reading quizzes; they are specific. I would take her again.
Professor Thompson makes this class so easy. DO THE READINGS and you'll be fine. Tests are easy as well as essays as long as you do the readings. I read for the first test and didn't study and got a 95, I didn't read for the second didn't study and got a 75. It's up to you how well you do in the class.
I could not have asked for a better women's literature course! Dr. Thompson is incredibly intelligent and facilitates wonderful discussions. There are two essays, a midterm and a final exam. While it's not too taxing, your worldview will be altered. I highly recommend this class to any English major. Perfect class.
lots of reading. you have to go to class for clicker quizzes. Lectures the whole time. Essays are 50 min timed essays with 1 out of 7 prompts that are computer generated. Tests are relatively easy. the reading is light on some days but pup to 40-50 pages on some nights (it is a lit class though)
Very lenient on the 4 (3-4 pg) essays, allows extensions, & midtermfinal are straight-forward enough. Lots of class participation. Readings are okay, lectures are dull. My only warning is this: SHE IS AWFUL AT ANSWERING E-MAILS!! If you need something from her, talk to her after class because she will leave you high and dry if you ask over e-mail.
Prof. Thompson is awesome! Lectures are so easy to sit through which is good because I do not recommend skipping class. There are clicker quizzes on assigned readings every class but the readings are not bad at all. She's so cute so I definitely recommend taking eng with her.
Professor Thompson is super nice and fun. You are going to read a lot so be prepared for that. There are reading quizzes every class to check for attendance and participation. Tests are easy as long as you take notes and read. Shes also really good at giving hints to what will be on the essays you have in class (3 essays total for the semester)
Her class was really interesting and she's pretty funny during lectures. Tests were easy. Attendance is a must though, she takes a clicker quiz at the beginning of every class.
There is a lot of work for this class, but help will always be given to those who ask for it. I often used her office hours and she wanted to help me succeed. There is a lot of difficult reading for this class, but she is willing to adapt to the students' needs (good listener, understanding). The class is easy, but the work produced is rewarding.
This is the first class I've been able to take that I actually felt like it was discussion based. We sit in a circle and talk in depth about the literature and topics of the books assigned. Reading quizzes, she enjoys hearing from you as a student/equal. She sits in the circle with us, as an equal, as opposed to at a podium.
Really great professor who does a wonderful job opening your mind to new concepts. She's also very nice and funny.
Be prepared to read! THIS IS NOT AN EASY A. There are three exams and three essays which are timed. The exams ask ridiculous questions on the authors of the books rather than actual questions about the book. The lectures are boring and everything is one sided and super feminist. The professor is rude and doesn't really help when you need it.
I like Prof. Thompson. She is very nice and clearly lays out the material and what we need to know. The class consists of assigned readings and then a quiz at the beginning of each class (attendance is mandatory for this reason) and then we reflect on the readings. We have a lot of essays and exams but nothing too difficult.
If you take her class, know in advance that to do well, you have to read on average 40 pages (of novel) between each class period. Clicker quizzes on reading EVERY CLASS. You can get away with sparknote for quizzes, but it will show in your test and essay grades. 3 essays are weighted pretty heavy along with exams. interesting book choices though.
We read so many books. At least 60 pages are assigned per class. Lectures get really boring and theres a reading quiz every class
all i have to say about this class - i worked so hard for the first two tests (read every book, came to class every day, took in-depth class notes) and got 70's on both.... for the last test i didn't read either book (didn't even read chapter summaries online) and spent class on instagram (didn't even look up let alone listen) and I got a 90... ya.
clicker reading quizzes EVERY CLASS! she does drop your lowest 4 quiz grades but they are a pain. Had to read about 9 books that were about 150-350 pages each. nice teacher but tough class if you're looking for just a gen ed...
Prof Thompson was overall okay. You definitely have to be there on time every class for reading quizzes with clicker (drops lowest 4 but still a challenge). You have to read 8 novels, its A LOT of reading,& the exams are pretty challenging even if you've read the books & will sink grade. Timed essay topics were fair and relevant to class discussion
There's a lot of reading for this class, but reading samples are interesting and enjoyable. Lectures are rarely dull, and you learn a lot in this class. Take this class if you want someone who knows what they're talking about. Definitely would take again!
This class inspired me to declare a major in english and a minor in gender studies. Absolutely fabulous.
you have to take an eng credit, take mary. she is super cool. classes are boring and tests are weirdly written but overall not too tough of a class. LOTS of reading but the books are interesting and most will make an impact on you which i respected. 3 short essays and 3 exams. attendance absolutely mandatory, reading quiz (clickers) every class
There are reading assignments every night, and I get it, this is college, but this is a gen ed course. She is a very nice lady and is well respected, the class just wasn't very interesting to me, and it all seemed routine to me. Also, as previously mentioned, the way she words her tests can be very confusing, so make sure you study HARD!
Not a bad class, the texts chosen are pretty depressing reads. The reading quizzes can be tough but the essays aren't too bad.
Thompson has been one of my favorite professors at JMU! She makes coming to lecture fun and exciting. You can tell that she's super passionate about teaching. She's a fair grader, extremely understanding, and available to discuss just about anything! As long as you attend class and participate, you'll have a great time! I know I did.
Clicker quizzes are a big part of your grade, as well as online timed essays. Must keep up with readings. Professor Thompson is really awesome!
The class wasn't bad if you did the readings. Every class there was a short quiz for participation on the readings. At times the readings were very lengthy and confusing. The class is almost completely based off of group discussion. There were 3 tests, final project, 2 short essays, and one other short presentation. Class overall was doable.
Quizzes every single class. She has very vague grading criteria despite rubrics and will take so many points off for things she didnt even specify she wanted. I felt like she was trying to make her class difficult even though the material isnt. I received almost perfect scores on both exams and yet didnt end up with A.
She assigns a crazy amount of reading each class, and you have to read it or else you will fail the in class quizzes (which is a majority of the grade). She makes the exams incredibly hard (average grade was 69-70) and yet refuses to curve or give points back.
A tough grader. My first C in an English class. Unclear on what she wants us to know or understand. I usually left class confident and then I would lose that confidence when I received my grade.
This class is extremely hard for a Gened. She assigns an insane amount of readings for each class. She also is obsessed with clickers, she saw me sit through a whole lecture one class but my clicker was out of battery (realized once I was there) and she refused to give me attendance for that day, even though she saw me there the whole time!
If you don't want to read 10 books with explicit details about rape, pls dont take this class. Incredibly hard gen ed, and you have clicker quizzes every single class about incredibly small details. Horribly vivid details of assualt discussed in class, and you can't skip out if that's a touchy subject because of the harsh quizzes. Pls dont take:(
The average final grade was a C. Nobody (out of 120 people) got above a 90 on the tests, yet she refused to curve. The tests would consist of random passages from the novels, incredibly specific questions. No matter how hard you studied, youre not getting a good grade because of how hard the tests are.
This class was relatively interesting but hard to get a good grade in. It is super important to go to class and you'll appreciate it when you take tests. hard to get an A on any of the tests because she asks really specific stuff that you can't really prepare for.
Would def recommend a different prof. Some interesting concepts but mostly boring lectures, mandatory quizzes that count as attendance every class. The tests are insanely detailed and impossible to study for. Essays are 75 minutes but graded like you have a week to write them. Some interesting books, mostly not.
Mary Thompson is such a gem. She's very knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches and really makes you want to listen. She makes group discussion easy and is very receptive to what students say during discussion. She actually made me want to read for this class. highly recommend
I dont have enough bad things to say about this class. 7 novels, 3 tests, 3 timed writings. Tests were extremely specific, literally impossible to know some of the answers. Her tests have been the hardest Ive taken at JMU and I am a straight A student. Essays were graded on insane criteria. Please do yourself a favor and take any other class.
Very interesting course; I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you do not enjoy rhetorical analysis/ interpreting works of literature do not take this course. You must pay attention in class; she gives very detailed insight on the assigned readings. Also, be prepared to write essays! Otherwise she is a very caring teacher and easy to follow.
I took this class online in the fall 2020 semester. We had 2 exams and a final, all on the assigned readings. You MUST read the readings to pass. This class was a lecture one day of the week and a discussion board due on the other. We also had to write three papers. This wasn't too bad but make sure you have the grading faculty look at it. xoxo
There were 2 exams, 1 final, and 3 essays total with busy work each week. Her test questions are super specific and I showed up to class and took notes - D on exams. She has the personality of a bag of flour and made class boring. If you dislike reading/talking about rape, sex, periods, and/or are conservative, don't take it.
I would NEVER take her again. WGSS is a 200 level GENED. She treats it like a graduate class. You are expected to participate 2 times each class or you won't get credit for participation that day. The tests are impossible. Homework assigned every day of the week. I wanted to love this course, but unfortunately she made me hate this topic of study.
She assigns a ton of readings and you have to participate unless you want to fail. She is very strict with her tests for some reason (only 50 mins for a 75 min class and cant go back to past questions). There are 5 tests too like this is a gen ed can you calm down. She made us watch a movie that we had to personally pay for which is super annoying
Dr Thompson was one of the best English professors I have had. Although the tests are 51 questions 50 minutes, the rest is not that bad. I struggled in the beginning with writing my essays and she took time out of her day to give me great feedback in order to help me. IF you do NOT read, you will fail!!
Please save yourself the stress. She seems nice at first but let me tell you, she is NOT considerate of your time WHATSOEVER. You are required to speak several times a class and if you don't your grade suffers heavily and not just a little, despite having over 30 more people in the class who need to do the same thing. SO incredibly frustrating.
Terrible. Just terrible. She makes this class 1000x harder than it needs to be and to be completely honest she is really rude when you have an opinion that differs even SLIGHTLY from hers. I have never, EVER, had a professor as bad and inconsiderate as her, and I normally ALWAYS get along with my professors. Just thank me later, don't take her.
Professor Mary Thompson is pretty okay as a professor. Since there were so many readings, her lectures actually helped clear up some confusion. Just be prepared for class discussions and written responses on Canvas. Buy the book you need to buy! You won't find any of the information or books online for free.
This is supposed to be a gen ed class but she treats it like a 400+ level. There are 5 tests and a ton of reading. You have to participate or you fail. This class is way harder than it should be given that it's a 200 level. She needs to be more lenient with her class especially during covid. The class would be fun if she wasn't a part of it
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HER. I took this as an elective course and both days of class were discussions from the textbook. she grades on participation in discussion and will give you a zero If you do not talk in a class of 40 people. awful at responding to emails. her tests are not clear what so ever and she gives the wrong criteria. no no no.
Way too high of expectations. Tests are unusually difficult and she can be rude. Unwilling to listen to student feedback and requires extreme amount of participation. Do not recommend.
She isnt very great, she forces you to do assignment at bed time. Timing for assignments is awful, she doesnt give you very much time. Her lectures are also hard to follow. When I asked her why she gives us no time to do them she said I want them to be fresh in your mind for next class.
I loved taking her Women's Literature class. Her lectures were always so interesting, and the classroom environment was welcoming and nonjudgemental. Many students engaged in discussions. I recommend getting the textbook and actually reading. You are assigned a short reading and 5-question quiz for every class. Three online exams and two essays.
Prof. Thompson takes a gen ed way too seriously. Quizzes or discussion boards up to 3 times a week. Will not post power points for class, so you can't review anything. Opens quizzes for class from 8:30pm-8:30am, and she will not change it because our class asked. Exams can not be reviewed unless you go to office hours. Don't take this class.
DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING FROM HER. This was my first semester at JMU and I don't want anyone to go through the struggle of her class. All assignments open at 8:30 at night and close in the mourning, her tests are 40 questions in 40 minutes, the teacher that grades most things has incredibly high standards, and she is very closed to opposing views.
Prof. Thompson was a great lecturer and a much better grader than our actual grading faculty, but still made this class a rough experience. Assignments were only open from 8:30pm-8:30am which is horribly inconvenient. Says participation is extra credit, yet wouldnt give me the extra .5% I needed despite my regular participation in class.
I found this class fairly difficult the first few weeks, but after getting the hang of it I really enjoyed it and ended with an A! Go to office hours and participate in class for the best chance at success!!
Loved this class because as long as you do the readings and keep up with quizzes and discussion boards, you will be fine. Attendance isn't mandatory but she incentivizes coming by not posting her PowerPoints online, and you can get extra credit for participating in class.
I'm not sure why we have to read only women's literature with a victim mentality. Why don't we read literature by women that is strong or powerful or influential. Women have created great works that don't just say "oh poor me everyone is oppressing me." I think this course could use another look at what it really is expressing.
Whatever you do, Do not take this class. The worst class I have ever taken. Don't know why its even an option to take a class like this.
MT is a respected professor in the English department who also oversees the WGSS minor. I took the DIY zines course with this course code. She is passionate about the subject and feminism in general. She is sensitive to students needs and will receive feedback and accommodation requests.
I hated this class. The content and readings were so unsettling and uncomfortable for a gen ed. The exams (5 of them!) were extremely difficult. They also made us write 3 in-class essays and graded them with extremely high expectations. I learned nothing from this class. Don't do it.
Took a course with MT last semester and this semester, and will have her again next semester. The two courses I took have a lot of readings and the amount of homework was difficult for me, but she is understanding if youre communicative with her. She is a wonderful professor and I value the topic of feminism so the courses were great for me!
Professor Thompson is amazing! She is so kind & deeply cares about the material. Her class was kind of difficult, but as long as you do the readings and go to class, you will do just fine! Tests are hard though. Essays are timed, but not too hard. I don't understand the bad reviews, great professor!
This was extremely hard for a gen-ed. 5 tests and 3 in class essays. Attendance matters and has a new code every class ( location based app so won't let you type in the code if you're not actually there). the average scores for both tests so far were both F's and she does not curve. Avoid taking this class.
if i could give a zero i would. She is super nice, but her course is way to hard for a gen ed. Have failed both of her exams even with hours of studying behind it. . Tons of readings a night, and hard grader. readings can be disturbing. content is kinda all over the place. I am dropping this class. please save yourself the stress, do not take her.
Worst professor
HORRIBLE!!! stay away at your own risk. Exams are soooo hard for no reason at all. The essay helps your grade a little but still hard to get a high grade. DO NOT TAKE
DO NOT TAKE!!! The average for every exam has been a 50 or below, she doesn't address this at all even though the majority of the class is struggling to pass. Worst gen ed ever.
Awful. During tests you are not allowed to look back at previous questions, once you click next there's no looking back. Essays are in person written by hand with a prompt revealed that day. Supposedly they are more lenient with grading because of this, but they're really not. Was sick on a test day and got told I could only make 1/2 credit back.
One of the worst professors I have had here. The average on exams is 50% and she does not curve. Exam questions are highly detailed on about 15 readings we have done within the unit. Hard to study for. Readings are AWFUL and very hard to follow.
The class average on most of the tests were a 50% and you are given 30 minutes to take a 30 question test without the ability to go back to a question once you click next. All of the required essays are in person, hand written, and you get the prompt that day. Attendance technically isnt mandatory but you are graded on it.
Very difficult to follow along if you have other classes that require a decent amount of your time. A lot of readings that you take exams on. Essays are somewhat more fair but also done in class so you dont have a lot of time for them.
This class was extremely difficult. You will be reading every night, and the class is mostly graded on impossible exams. The class average for exams is usually around a 51%. Four exams and three in-class written essays. Attendance is mandatory, and make sure to stay the whole class. Attendance points are graded on accuracy. Wouldn't recommend ever.
The worst class I've taken since I've been at JMU. I have A's in all of my classes except for this class. The study guides are useless and the tests are on minuscule little details from the readings. She grades attendance and in-class questions. If you get them wrong your grade will go down even further. The essays help your grade. DO NOT TAKE!
Is an awful class, obscure test questions that no one is ready for and the average for all three exams ranged from 50-60 and still wouldn't curve the test. I have As in all my other classes and this is the one class that gives me troubles and its gen Ed, no reason it should be this hard.
You're gonna read a lot of poems, essays, and short stories, but most of them are pretty interesting. Some are tough reads. Everything from the tests are found in the notes and the literature. She cares a lot about her students. If you're interested in the subject I would recommend this class. If not, you can definitely find an easier gen-ed.
Her tests were actually the hardest tests I've ever had to take. We were required to remember information mentioned once in class and then never brought up again. I would not recommend taking this class.
Her tests were so hard. Some of the questions were about specific words used to describe something we mentioned in class once, or about things talked about in September when the test was on readings from November to December. I would not recommend taking her.
Professor Thompson's class was unnecessarily difficult for a gen-ed course. The tests didn't match what we learned or what was on the study guides, making it hard to prepare. The mandatory attendance policy using a location-based app was excessive and frustrating. Overall, the class felt outdated and unreasonably strict.
She was decent, but the class in general was weird and required so much reading and your grade was very dependent on exam grades. I also personally was sick for a while, and she doesn't give you excused absences which will impact your grade.
As a woman, Thompson makes women sound miserable. Throughout the excessive amount of readings, not a single one was a positive or influential piece. Most work i've had to do for a GenEd. Tests are insanely specific (showing a photo from a 232 page graphic novel and asking what the caption on it was). Lectures are so boring. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
I think I already left a review but I want to emphasize every negative rating and state that she gives 3 tests with avg. scores of 50 with no curve and 3 essays and can still accuse you of cheating on a handwritten essay the study guide is useless as are the lectures but the attendance grade will hurt you if you don't go Lastly she don't care abt u
she deserves a 1.0 rating she talks about women as if they are victims, which is ironic coming from a female teacher + men and the patriarchy are the true evil in her class no going back on tests about things not discussed avg is a 50 in the class + never curves. if you have an issue it's never her fault it's yours. everyone is a cheater in her eye
She makes her classes so much more difficult than they need to be and is a very strict grader. She made us go out of our way for multiple field trips that were not during class time. She also does not treat her students equally so if she doesn't like you your grade is cooked.
I thought Professor Thompson was very intellectual. I didn't expect to enjoy this class as much as I did, but it surprised me. Attending every class is vital in understanding the text beyond your own opinions, which will serve you well on exams and essays. If you enjoy learning about woman in the literary world, I would suggest taking this class!
