her notes are very informative; good teacher.

Standard lecture format class. Woollen did offer office hours and asked the class questions in lectures. She used many real world examples that were thoughtfully selected. Tests were slightly difficult. Woollen seemed prepared and precise in her lectures and help.
Mary knows the material and communicates it well but she can be a bit of a hard ass come grading and exam time.
She's a good teacher but it's hard to get an A in her class. Textbook is very hard to understand, so you'd better focus on her lectures. Cumulative final will drag your grade down to a lower level.
Friendly and approachable, but very strict grader. Doesn’t like giving out A’s. Also, (very important) she rushes through chapters. She seems more concerned about getting through the test and less concerned about teaching the text. This is why I cannot give her a good rating.
Excellent teacher. Tough exams, but fair. You have to study. Lectures were good, class discussions were better. Course content was otustanding, only decent financial analysis class at the school.
Boring subject she is NOT APPROACHABLE and moody. very knowledgeable, but I disliked the entire class and her voice.
Teaching is not Mary’s goal, her goal is to get through the textbook. Also, Mary doesn’t want to be viewed as an easy grader so she grades very unfairly on the students presentations. If you expect a good grade in her class think again.
Her class wasn't hard, the difference between an A or a B is big. I liked her alot, if you have questions just go to her office. I went everyday and she was always very helpful. She graded my presentations very fairly. The students in my class gave me about 75% and she always gave me around 83%. The exam grading was extremely generous. A+ for Mary!
Mary’s tests are all BullSht. She will also but on the final exam the text that we did not cover in the regular semester. Mary does not care about students just getting though the text book. Her grading on the oral reports is extremely unfair. Ask other students who have take her and they will tell you the same, “This instructor is a F'n ****!!:
She is an excellent teacher! She is very detail-oriented and very helpful ! Her tests are hard, but she will give extra credit and curve the class after all. She is very nice and approachable, talk to her and she will help you through the semester! One of my favorite professor at UH!!!
Excellent professor. My first course in accounting, and I learned a ton. Highly recommend her. Test was very detailed. You will have to work for a good grade, which means you will learn a ton if you put in the effort.
she is not fair and doesnt teach well at all, has a real problem relating ideas to those who dont have her backround, and strict as all
She knows a lot about accounting and she is very helpful if you need it. The thing is that she grades really hard. Her first two test are out of 25 Mult. Choice. She grades really hard on the homework and projects.
I love her! She is so helpful. Her tests are tough but she's willing to help and very pleasant if you express interest in the subject!
I hadn't taken an accounting class in a couple years before taking this class. Learning curve was hard (not her fault), but she explains things thoroughly if asked, and is always willing to help. Fair, but firm, grader. If you do the homework and read the text, you will do well. Only downside is the cumulative final.
Class was fairly easy. Just go to class, do your homework and try to pay attention every once in a while and you will get an A. Its not hard
Woolen is a good professor, she doesn't have favorites, but her lectures tend to run on the long side. She assigns HW, has in class quizzes, two midterms, and a final. Its a LOT of work! She is also very picky with the group project, so be careful!
Very Nice Lady, however her class is super hard and you have to study a lot for her test. She is really helpful when you see her in her office. Buy kissing a$$ does not work in her class!!!
This class is HARD. The group project is killer. Woolen is really strict on tardiness, she'll mark you down for the stupidest things like if you forget to write your seat number on your homework.
Excellent teacher. She is a bit strict and picky but it reflects on her professionalism. If you commit the time and effort, the class isn't so hard. She's very passionate about Accounting so you'll learn a lot from her. She's a vital asset to Shidler.
One of the best teachers at Shidler. She provides helpful real life examples and tips to making accounting easier. Not the easiest class but definitely would recommend taking her if you really want to learn.
The final exam is hard!
Get an A on the final, get an A in the class. (easier said than done) She's a bit looney sometimes. Try not to look at her while she talks (she walks back n' forth TOO much, it makes me fall asleep) and focus on taking good notes instead (look at your paper). Print the powerpoints and review sheets to bring to class. Good Luck = ]
If you want to be bored to death by someone who is not talking to a class but to themselves take her class. I received a "B+" in ACC201 and I didn't go to class for 3 weeks. I showed up for her classes every day, did the homework and still managed to get below average. She is there to put in 1hr 15 min and doesn't care about teaching to anyone.
She is an excellent teacher that has the course designed really well so that all the components help you really learn the material. It's not the most exciting material to learn, but follow along in class and the homework and exams are cake. Need basic math, some algebra and the ability to retain simple concepts. =)
I had her for Intermediate Accounting too and I wish I could take her for all my Accounting courses. She's the greatest!
She's so far another very great professor I've had at Shidler College of Business. The first one is Gary Nishigawa, who will teach Acc 415 in fall 2010.
I took her for 323 and 401 for a reason. She's very straight forward with her expectations. Her syllabus has the course outlined, and if you want a good grade it's best you follow it. Print out the ppt, trust me. She provides a study guide which goes in order from her powerpoint (printed those, right?) and her final (401) is cumulative.
She designs her course to be as easy to understand the material but it does get boring. She is fair and very helpful.
It is not an easy class, but if you understand the material, it is not difficult. She is very helpful and explain things very clear. One of the best acc professor at Shidler. I wish I took 401 from her. Recommend to anyone who wants to learn accounting.
She can be a hard teacher, but like all classes it is up to the student if they do good or not. She knows her stuff and is still doing tax as her current job so she is very up to date with the information. Just listen in class and you will do fine. She gives a lot of cushion for grades. I would recommend her to anyone.
Woollen is a very organized and very fair instructor. ACC 401 is a lot of work because the tax law is so expansive, but Woollen is pretty good at explaining the course content and you can gain a lot from her class.
Took her for ACC 401. All I can say is that she's real tough. She gives loads of work and doesn't curve period, though the silver lining is that the final's open book and open note. She explains everything pretty well though, so if you want to learn, take her.
Explains very well, extremely well prepared&organized. Explains upcoming exams/quizzes/project well ahead of time. One tax case that comprises of 7 parts, 4,000word min. Does not curve. 6 homework turn-ins, attendance mandatory, 6 in-class quizzes. 2 midterms, final is open everything. Not an easy class, but you will learn tons!HIGHLY recommended.
Woollen is a great accounting teacher. If you really want to learn accounting take Woollen. You really really need to study and read to do well in this class. I studied at least an hour each day and got a B+ in the class.
Professor Woollen is one of the greatest accounting Professors I've ever taken in Shidler. Her class is very worth it.
She is the best Accounting professor that Shidler has to offer. Everyone says that her class is difficult but that's mostly because everyone is used to some kind of curve. Her exams are very straightforward and you will know exactly what you will be tested on. It's not hard to get an "A," just do the HW, go to class, and read the book.
Clarity clarity clarity. lectures extremely organized. her classes helped me pass FAR last year, and hopefully REG this year too. She's extremely helpful when you have questions. Available early in the mornings outside class. ACC dept needs more people like Mary. Extremely dedicated, objective, helpful, fair, amazing.
Professor Woollen is the ABSOLUTELY most amazing accounting professor of Shidler. Her lectures are so organized and she is SOOO helpful. She really cares about her students. If you try hard and study, you will find this class worthy. She is the definition of accounting! If you want to learn real accounting, take her!
Best Accounting Professor Ever! Lectures are organized and explained well. She provides a study guide for each exam which basically lists all the stuff that will appear on the exam. Study the study guides and you will get a good grade.
I wish she taught higher level accounting courses. Really great instructor.
Mary Woollen is by far the best teacher I've ever had. You absolutely need to put in the effort to pass her class but she explains everything very thoroughly and is willing to take the time to help you understand something. She has very clear grading criteria which allows you to know exactly where you stand. I wish she taught some graduate classes.
Professor Woollen is amazing. Seriously brahs, the class is super chill but the exams are tough. She gives choke partial credit on problems and tries her best to make sure that everyone grasps the material Seriously, if you're taking her for Tax you'll be taught from one of the best out there. Do homework and study and you'll do great Good Luck!!
Sticks to the syllabus. Pay attention! She has "pop" quizzes, but you have 1 wk to study & you're told what is covered. She does not collect all chapter homework, but just do it because you don't know which is collected! Possible EC if you do all your work. Grade may be rounded up if you are close to a higher grade and did all work & showed up.
Woollen is such a great professor and so hard at the same time! All aspects of her class is very organized. If her class isn't priority in your semester, then you're bound to fall behind for ACC323. My suggestion is to take 15 or less credits, no internship or minimal hours, and use the textbook as supplemental study material. Study and try hard!
Woollen's ACC401 course wasn't as bad as her 323 course, but her amount of work she gives is about the same. I used the textbook as supplemental study material and it helped a lot. I also appreciate how organized her class and lectures are. Skipping class is bad idea since she gives so much info in every single lecture.
I took her for ACC401 and ACC323 this semester. Both classes were the hardest for me. The exams were tricky just read the book and you'll do well. She's VERY ORGANIZED. You have to put in the efforts to study hard or pass her class. Heavy Lectures but you'll learn a lot. Really like her, I wish she taught higher accounting classes. Takeherclass:)
Mary is a great teacher but very difficult. If you put in the work and study a lot outside of class, you'll do great. She is always there to help if you have questions or want her to explain things. The exams are difficult but there are tons of other assignments in the class to help boost you up. Show up to class and definitely pay attention.
This class is difficult but as long as you put in a good effort into everything, you should be fine. Mary teaches everything very well and is always there to help. Lectures are extremely important, so make sure to go to every class and pay attention. Exams are info heavy but there's tons of other ways to earn points in her class.
Chill af. Professor Woollen is amazing, she knows her stuff!
Professor Woollen is an amazing professor! Shes still practicing Tax Accounting so she is up to date with all the information you need for Tax accounting. She is more than willing to help you out if you dont understand a certain topic. You learn a lot in class, but gives tough exams. But I dont blame her for it since taxation is not an easy class
Mary Woollen is the most amazing professor I've ever had in my entire college life. She gives amazing lectures, and she is more than willing to help you out whenever you dont understand a certain subject. She also did a good job facilitating the class when the university transitioned to an online platform when covid-19 reached Hawaii.
P. Woollen is a good professor. She provided ch. notes for students which all cover important contents. She explain each topics in detailed make sure everybody understand. Since tax law is definately hard and lots of details to memorize, so study hard before the exam because the exam is hard.
I think Prof. Woollen is really detailed and patient. Even though the exam is tough, but if you pay attention in class and read questions carefully when your exam that you will be fine. I learned a lot of knowledge from her, she is the best accounting professor I have met. If you really want to study well in accounting, just take her class!
She is a very good teacher. For a class related to tax, she does a great job of explaining the material/concepts. She does not refer to the textbook to explain material. She is not lax and will stick with her grading criteria.
Great professor - speaks clearly and explains material thoroughly. My only complaint about this class is that exams were tricky/detail-heavy to the point where I stopped studying for them because I got the same grade whether or not I spent the time. But hey, it's accounting - it's supposed to be a little nitpicky.
By far one of my favorite teachers at Shidler! Her lectures are clear and she gives you lecture notes for each chapter with problems she'll let you try on your own before going over together in class. Tests are multiple choice/short answer but you have to read the problems carefully. She's also super easy to reach outside of class!
The best professor I've had! Accounting is going to be tough no matter where you go, but Mary has really perfected what she teaches. Knows her stuff and can always explain our questions. She creates her own powerpoints that have tons of examples. She gives lots of extra credit and is a super fair grader. Put in the time and you'll do well.
Professor Woollen is an excellent teacher and makes a very difficult class enjoyable. She explains the material and is able to answer any questions clearly and thoroughly. I would take one of her courses again in a heart beat.
Professor Woollen is the best professor I've had so far in my collegiate career, and maybe one of the best teachers I have had in my entire academic career. Her class is difficult, but she will give you the tools you need to succeed. Pay attention in class, ask questions, get into study groups, and really put in the effort, and you'll do great.
Professor Woollen is an excellent teacher and knows her accounting. The exams are extremely difficult so keep reading and studying. Her classes are some of the most difficult courses I have taken, while at the same time are some of the best. If she decided to teach other accounting courses, I would not hesitate to sign up.
Inspired me to care about taxes, of all things. Her lectures are entertaining, and helpful to understand the content. Homework is doable. The tests are difficult, so it's very important to create a study group and prepare for the exams. If it's on the study guide, it WILL BE on the test in some form. Do the comprehensive problems.
W Professor :D
I really loved taking Professor Woollen's ACC 401 course, and I'm super stoked that she teaches ACC 323 as well. Her lectures really simplify the complexity of taxation, and although there's homework every week, it's pretty manageable.
Best accounting professor! The material in this course is quite intense but she does a great job at teaching it. Each lecture is important to follow until the end and plenty of practice and exercise opportunities are included. Exams are pretty tough, so attend each lecture and study the material well.
Although exams make up 70% of the course grade, her exams aren't the most complicated. Just briefly go over the study guides every once in a while and try to understand why something is what it is, what accounts are associated with the concept at least 1-2 weeks before and you should be good.
She creates the notes for you with 3 exams throughout the semester and one group project. I would take her again because she made accounting a little more understandable
Excellent professor! Definitely a class you don't wanna miss or skip. Office hours is very helpful. Be prepared to work very hard and your efforts will be well rewarded.
The best accounting professor at Shidler. Mary is clearly so knowledgable and passionate about teaching. Her class is difficult but it is possible to get a good grade if you put in the effort. Be sure to go to her office hours.
ACC210 was a difficult course but Professor Wollen made sure to engage with her students and help them learn. Attendance is taken randomly throughout the course, but I suggest not skipping as it matters in the end. Homework and quizzes are very easy. Exams are a bit rough, but she gives extra credit and points. Take her class if you want to pass.
ACC210 - Professor Woollen is one of the best professors I've had while at UH. She knows exactly what she is talking about and teaches it very well. I have always struggled with accounting before her class and now I'm doing well. Does practice while in class and the tests are multiple choice. Take her class!!!!
Knows accounting very well and doesn't read off the slides like a lot of professors do. You are graded on a point system and majority of your points stem from exams which are difficult to say the least.
LOCK TF IN. Class was very informational but the exams.... LOCK IN. Do the limited extra credit assignments and do well on quizzes. STUDY that final exam study guide. good luck
She is very passionate about accounting and her lectures reflect that, the lectures are very useful for homework. Tests are rough but, she provides a study guide that gives you a good idea about what will be on the test. Group project near the end of the semester.
323 is already hard, but Mary makes it bearable. The content is HARD! Do all the homework, do the extra credit, and lock in for this class. You NEED to attend lectures and study for the exams unless you are extremely smart.
Accounting is conceptual hard, but Mary makes it easy to understand and follow. She lectures the entire 75 minute class but she gives plenty of practice problems during class, and explains how to do every single step in each problem. Homework for each chapter is long, but helps you understand a lot. Study guide given for final, specs for tests.
Amazing prof! You can tell that she's super passionate abt acc and wants students to succeed. Lectures are informative + there's classwork. 3 exams that are weighted heavily, but she gives you a great study guide. She also curves them a lil. Tip: keep doing the hw until you get the concept cuz the exams have the same type of questions.
She's very clear about what she's looking for and how you will be assessed for quizzes and exams. She makes herself available outside of class times and will work through problems with you step-by-step. She gives a few extra credit opportunities, but as long as you go through everything she puts on the study guide, you'll be fine.
Professor Woollen was an amazing professor who knew her stuff and broke down accounting concepts in a way that was digestible. We did lots of practice calculations in class and she was always open to answering questions. The class's workload and assignment structure were straightforward and manageable. I learned a lot from her.
I have had a 4.0 throughout all of my 3 college years so far, and this one ruined it. Accounting is so hard, and she does not necessarily make it any easier. Yes, she is kind and sweet, but the tests are HARD and so is the material. Super long study guides, and only 1/5th of it is actually on the tests, and the rest is random. Take someone else..
It was okay for the first few weeks, however the way she teaches is confusing to me and many of my classmates. She put blame on us for our tests being low, and I admit although we play a part, so does her convuluted teaching style, which she never seemed to consider. 2 stars instead of 1 because she's nice at least. Consider taking someone else.
Mary's tests are very straightforward. Although 323 is a difficult class, she makes it manageable and explains the material clearly. She is fairly lenient with grading, but it's important to understand that you still need to put in the time and effort to do good in this class. Lectures are important but you need to be doing work outside of class.
