I cannot say enough good things about Professor Zadeh! I really enjoyed her lectures. She gives a lot of examples to help learn the difficult material. Her homework assignments can get long, but they are really beneficial to learn the material. Exams are very similar to homework problems, so you are well prepared. I highly recommend taking her!
Amazing professor. You can tell she is really into what she is teaching. She is so nice and makes the lectures easy to understand. Attendance is not mandatory but I highly recommend going to every single lecture. Tests closely resemble hw problems, so it was easy to prepare. Office hours are always beneficial for further understanding the material.
Dr. Zadeh was a very good thermodynamics instructor. She broke down the material well and provided lots of examples. She spent considerable class time reviewing last lectures and went over quizzes and commonly mistaken homework questions so we could learn from our mistakes. The grading system was fair and I came to understand the material decently.
Lectures are good, and the notes/recordings are available online, but be sure to not miss any classes if you can help it, because sometimes there are pop quizzes. The homework can and will save or destroy your grade. Finish it if at all possible, and preferably more than a day or two ahead of time (not the night/morning before class like me).
Each lecture begins with a review which helps you recollect previous lessons and establish connections between concepts. Personally, I find it to be the most engaging and beneficial. The lectures are well balanced with theory and practical examples. She's really passionate about the material and is a reasonable teacher.
Lectures and examples are far easier than tests and homework. Lengthy homework assignments that do match some test problems but are more challenging.
Go to every lecture. I had a difficult time learning from her in class, but I would often regret missing out on an explanation of a new topic. The course started very slow but picked up fast. The hardest part of the course by far is the homework - it's lengthy, confusing, and takes a lot of effort to get through.
I took both Thermo and Statics classes with her and I don't regret it. She explains the lectures very clearly and if you have a question she answers and breaks the problem down for you. The tests questions are similar to examples done in class and the HW questions.
Lectures move at a fast pace. Exams are very similar to homework problems. Quizzes are pretty easy and cover the most basics for the concepts. Lenient grader. Very kind and caring during office hours.
I didn't like her at all! Her quizze are insane, they cover a very niche part of each chapter so you have to be very lucky to have studied the correct material. The grading on her tests is very harsh. Her feedback when it comes to regrades is quite poor, makes it hard to understand the grading rubric of quizzes and exams. Would not take again.
I have a lot of respect for Dr.Zadeh, she cares about your learning, her methods push you. At first, I felt helpless in this class, but Dr.Zadeh assured me that this was not my case. She saw potential and pushed. Don't be scared by this, it brings out your stronger self, gives gritt. The best professors leave a lifelong lesson.
Tests and quizzes are fair. Gives plenty on partial credit. Homework is lengthy but helps greatly to prepare for quizzes/tests. Pop quizzes for extra credit.
Provides clear notes. Tests are fair and similar to homework problems. Passionate about her subject and genuinely wants to help students. Study and you will be fine.
A knowledgeable professor and an amazing instructor. The homework assignments were manageable and effectively prepared students for the tests. Gives pop quizzes that all count for bonus. Would definitely recommend.
Dr Zadeh was very nice, she taught pretty fast and was sometimes hard to keep up with, the tests were especially difficult but I think if I would have studied more I probably would have done better. Tests were a little heavily weighted, assignments were pretty tough at times sometimes I wasn't sure what equation to use and when
Seems like a really good teacher. The class is interesting but hard. Exams are not too difficult if you put the effort into understanding and practicing homework problems.
Had Dr. Zadeh for both Statics and Thermo 1 and overall would not recommend (although probably better than some of the other options). Lectures are not bad however goes relatively fast through lectures and is not super receptive to student questions. Homework is long and difficult but similar to exam material. Exams are difficult and very lengthy
Really good teacher, attend class and read lecture notes and you'll do fine. Beware of pop quizzes that actually serve as bonus points.
Easy to understand notes and well organized. Homework is difficult, but the time spent on it is worthwhile as it helps prepare for tests.
All these good ratings she has, I just don't see that professor. Maybe what I hear about her deleting bad reviews is true, maybe we just didn't mesh well. She teaches super fast and is extremely rude to students. The difficulty of the HW is insane compared to lecture and test difficulty is insane compared to the HW. At least there's a curve.
Overall very good experience with HW about every 1.5 weeks and 3 exams including the final. Exams were similar to HW and when she made the second one hard, she curved it. Property tables are needed but the other textbook is only needed if you want the extra practice (which I recommend if you can easily spend $60-$70) and I did well without it.
I found the course enjoyable. It's essential to keep up with the readings and stay on top of the homework as they are tested. I noticed significant improvement from the start to the end. Occasionally, there are pop quizzes, but they aren't challenging.
Genuinely seems to care about students and gives lots of opportunities to get help. Exams are hard though.
My experience with Dr. Zadeh was not bad, but definitely not great. It seems like she tries her best to teach but overall the concepts she taught and examples we did in class did not align well with tests and homework. Exams were challenging and very limited on time. Class averages on exams were very poor as a result. Beware of fake reviews
Pretty insufferable overall. She censors all of her bad reviews, which means most of her good reviews are probably fake too. This is my third time reviewing. Definetely avoid.
These reviews are not an accurate reflection of this professor. Explanations from her are poor, her homework is unbearable, and she has very little flexibility. Definitely don't recommend.
The HWs are a nightmare because they're super long and she grades super harshly. She's not a nice person and will never go out of her way to help you. Lectures are hard to understand due to her accent and rapid pace. She will look for any possible way to penalize you on HWs and tests.
One of the most boring lecturers I've ever had. She has a lot of good reviews, but I just don't see that teacher. She is very rude if you have any sort of question or request. She's an insanely harsh grader when it comes to homework and tests. The homework is long and excruciating. AVOID.
The lectures are SO BORING. I feel like I'm going to die of boredem every day during her class. Everything on the homework has to be done her way or else you lose major points. As far as she goes, I've never met anyone who seems so nice but turns out to be so rude once you actually meet them.
Her rating is far too high. She is not a great lecturer, as a lot of her explanations are not elaborated well. The homework is ridiculous. I understand the rigor that she has for the difficulty of the homework, but her grading is absurd. She takes major points off for small mistakes on homework.
She really made me realize my passion for thermodynamics... as I was in the air running off EB3.
why does ncsu hire people like this?
Words cannot describe how boring this class is. Her voice is also super annoying. There's really nothing special about her and you can NEVER count on her to be flexible or help you out in any way.
How is her rating above 1? She must be getting ratings removed and the good ones are fake. AVOID.
I have NEVER been more bored during her lectures. This woman will make you regreet choosing MAE. Her homework is a nightmare and you will think she's joking when you see how many points she takes off for the smallest things.
Her class is like a cartoon style lecture where the professor doesn't want to be there and the students are either sleeping or bored out of their minds.
I regret taking her class so much. Any other option would have been so much better. Please do not take this professor EVER.
I could not sit through her lectures without yawning, and now stick to watching her lectures online on 2x speed. Her homework assignments are actually the worse. For her test she gives an equation sheet and you can usually assume the questions she'll ask. Beware that she does not give the full class time to complete the test and similar to hw.
Don't. Trust me.
She will do ANYTHING to make you fail. AVOID.
Don't waste your time with her. She has a horrible attitude and gives the worst lectures only to give you impossible tests that are harshly graded.
I don't think I've had a professor worse than her. Honestly. She's a waste of tuition, don't take her unless you want to risk staying an extra semester.
It doesn't get much worse than her.
TERRILBE! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!!
TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!! TAKE ANYONE BUT HER!!!!!!
This professor is the sole point of my stress this semester, she's making me never want to take any other kind of thermodynamics course ever again, I would rather hug a tree at 150mph.
Lectures are terrible due to her fast pace, quiet tone, and accent, but skipping class to watch online helps with pacing. Homework is much harder than lecture examples. Exams are predictable (HW problems and textbook problems) and test averages are 80+, but still need a lot of prep. Office hours are ok, cus she helps with homework solutions.
She's so bad on every level.
I truly never thought any individual could make me want to quit engineering this bad.
Lectures are unintelligible, HW is a nightmare, and she is very unapproachable in general. Definitely take other options if available.
Completely AWFUL. Do NOT take.
If chat GPT were a professor, it would be her. Even at a 2.5 she's still overrated. Worst professor I've had at ncsu so far.
Didn't know failing lab was possible until now. This class was an absolute nightmare. If your TA is Jack van Welzen you are absolutely screwed. Normally labs are free A's, but not w/ this coordinator. You will have to fight for your life just to even pass. Thank God it's only one credit. Hoping the coordinator changes soon.
Bottom of the pot, doesn't get much worse. Doesn't care enough to help anyone unfortunately. If you mess up one exam you're probably not going to pass. Avoid.
Lots of material covered in a short amount of time, but she does her best to cover it all in that short amount of time. The class isn't easy, but if you put in the work, you should do fine and at least pass. Ignore all the one stars, I think a student got mad at a bad test grade or got into an argument with her or something along those lines.
feels like she doesn't want you to pass tbh.
do not take her at all.
She sounds like if chat gpt were a professor. If trying to get your students to fail was an olympic sport, she would have three gold metals. She tries her best to confuse you with the homework, and then she asks questions about the most trivious miniscule topics that she covered in class for 1 min on the exams. HORRIBLE professor.
Her accent makes the already painful lectures even worse. She's redundant to the point where it makes the lectures lifeless and unintelligible. She could assign online homework through McGraw Hill, but she chooses to make you write it all out on paper and upload it all for the TA to get you an 80 for not writing governing equaion. clownshow
Having her made my semester so much worse. If I new she was this bad, I would've just taken solids and dynamics and left thermo for next semester. She goes a mile a minute and class and and overemphasizes the obvious stuff while underemphasizing the difficult concepts. Safe yourself the trouble and AVOID.
She makes you write out all of your homework solutions step by step when she's totally capable of assigning online homework. As a professor, she's pretty rude and unapproachable. She even gets frustrated when people ask good questions during class. She puts the most random questions on tests and never posts solutions on moodle.
I really regret taking this professor. Her homework is too hard and her lectures are super redundant and boring. Also, the formula sheet she provides you for exams is trash, so be sure you know memorize everything going into the exam rather than relying on her half-baked sheet.
You can pass this class, but it will take years off your life make you want to switch to business.
every day I contemplate how much better my life could've been if I had taken taken someone else for this class. Attending lectures will erase your intelligence if anything. She cannot resist the urge to give ridiculous curveball questions on exams in attempt to lower grades. Stay away.
Has ok lectures with fillable notes. Homework is hard and lengthy, but is harder than tests. Course itself is fairly difficult and has lots of concepts. She doesn't make it easier but it could be a lot worse. Fairly picky grader but generally explains what she wants.
How professor Zadeh has not yet been fired is beyond me. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE is you ever see her.
Out of many good candidates, she definitely gets the award for the worst professor at state. She was so painfully lifeless and uninteresting that she made me want to jump off of EB1. Her HW and midterms are super bad, but her final is a NIGHTMARE. Her class is unbearable and will takes years off your life.
It's only a matter of time before professor Zadeh has the lowest rating on RMP. Do me and favor and real quickly picture the worst possible professor that could ever exist. I PROMISE you she is even worse than that.
She's not good. She's extremely rude to students during lecture and constantly ignores emails. If you're looking for consistency, she's a good choice because she's consistently terrible. She only provided office hours once a week during a time when almost everyone had another class. I really don't know what to say other than to avoid her.
Even at a 2.1, professor Zadeh is still overrated. My exam scores were 73, 63, 69. I went to every lecture, put in 50+ hours outside of class and STILL barely passed. Her lectures are unintelligible and will only confuse you, so if you get stuck with her, do NOT go to lectures.
She's really boring and hard to understand. She provides you a formula sheet for exams, but it's completely unhelpful and I never used it tbh. Professor Zadeh doesn't want anything to do with her students as she walks in the second her lectures starts and leaves the second it's done. Definitely would not reccomend.
She did a poor job of explaining the concepts behind thermodynamics making it hard to solve problems that differ from the exact format of the examples she does in class. Her lectures are dull and not particularly helpful, and her lecture notes are mediocre at best. She also often misunderstands what questions students are asking. Avoid if possible.
Yeah I'm not gonna lie this one's probably the worst you'll ever see. It's too bad she makes her exams super difficult in addition to her lectures being hard to understand. It's a shame that both of those things are true it's usually pretty managable if only one is. Take someone else for sure.
I'm not sure why one clown is on a vendetta against Zadeh, spamming 1-star reviews. The course was very straightforward: one HW per chapter, with test questions nearly identical to the homework and taken from the textbook. The final was curved. I loved the content; Zadeh did a great job of making a simple course.
I could tell since the first day that this was going to be a bad class. Professor Zadeh sounds super rebotic and it seems like she's just trying to show off her knowledge during class rather than teach. I diddn't learn anything from her, and I think any other professor would've been better.
Lectures are hard to pay attention to due to her fast pace and thick accent, skipping class and watching the lecture online isn't a terrible idea to watch and learn better. Homework isn't too difficult it just takes a lot of time and tests follow homework difficulty (Majority of them are in the textbook). Take this class seriously to succeed.
Not a great professor not super easy and did not learn much would recommend pretty much anyone else
It's a shame that someone seems to have a personal grudge against Zadeh and is spamming unfair reviews. Honestly, I thought the course was great and straightforward. The final was curved. I enjoyed the material, and Zadeh did a solid job making it easy to follow. If you're looking for a well-structured course, this is it!
I've read some of these reviews, and what a clown wasting their time, just get over it. I took statics with her, and I was happy she taught it that semester. I guess she's not teaching it anymore. She did a fine job in MAE 201. I was expecting a B+, but I ended up with an A, so no complaints here!
This was a solid course. We had 7 homework, 2 tests, and the final. Ignore the scam reviews. If you put in the work, you'll totally crush it!
Look I can understand the reviews about boring lectures, but this is by far one of the easiest and well taught engineering classes I have ever taken. Exams were super fair as they came word for word straight from the homework or textbook, which rarely happens with MAE classes. If you took the time to study, making anything above a B is super easy.
Her slides and formula sheet are all you need to get through the class which she uploads before classes. It takes about 10 minutes to do notes each day then she does examples that are useful, they take a while for her to get through. Exams were very fair and were usually just homework problems with different numbers. homework is sometimes long.
I had her for both MAE 206 and 201. It is not very challenging, but lots of hw, and you will end up with good grades.
Zadeh is a… professor. It's almost like she knows the script to her set of PDF notes like the back of her hand, but finds it difficult to veer off of it. That being said, her curriculum and grading are very forgiving, and while the course has an overwhelming amount of material, it gets interesting near the end.
There are so many opportunities to learn and boost your grade. Just do the work and pay attention.
Study the homework and extra problems in the textbook and use those solutions as notes for the quizzes and exams.
she's easily the worst professor i've ever had. Hard tests, impossible hw, horrible availability, boring lectures, and provides a garbage formula sheet.
Her exams are manageable if you study and get the concepts, I'd say a B is attainable. Study enough and the A is yours.
she's the teacher who finally made me quit engineering
The course is really informative, and if you stay on top of the homework, you'll be fine. My only complaint is that there's quite a bit of material to study, which can feel a little overwhelming at times.
I've taken both Statics and Thermo with Dr. Z, though I think she doesn't teach Statics anymore. In class, she goes through plenty of example problems, which really helps with understanding the material. The exams are fair in terms of difficulty especially when compared to the the course content and homework.
completely HORRIBLE, do NOT take
I constantly gave her feedback on how to improve her course, she never took it seriously and continued to teach in her ineffective manner
very little availability outside of class, ridiculously hard homework, and a very harsh grader
do not take her, her teaching is not good and you will regret it
her lectures are painfully uninteresting and she is very rude/unapproachable if you have questions about the class. Definitely would not reccomend.
her lectures literally sound like if chat gpt were a professor. she also very grades very harshly and has little availability for office hours
Shw was BAD. I studied for hours every day and still didn't pass. The homework is impossible and the lectures won't help you learn the material.
I've NEVER seen a teacher grade so harshly in my life. The homework is long and irrelevant, the lectures are boring, and the tests are graded very harshly. I would not take this professor again under any circumstance.
I had already taken thermo once before but she didn't make it any easier. Definitely take other options if available.
Don't let her smile fool you. She gives almost no partial credit, has horrible availability outside of class, never responds to emails, and wants you to do bad in her class.
My experience with this teacher was not good. She often got frustrated when students asked questions and was very unrerachable outside of class. Her homework and tests were very irrelevant to what we did in class. She was also very harsh with the grading. Find other options if possible.
I've read some of the reviews and I don't think they're entirely fair. She's clear with her expectations, and if you study the notes and stay on top of the homework, you can do well. My friends and I all got A's, and compared to other instructors, she's actually quite fair.
the reviews giving her a 5 are not an accurate reflection of this professor. Do not let her personality fool you. She will not give you any partial homework and will assign the most outrageously difficult hw possible. Stay away!
I dont really understand these 1-star reviews.. I was nervous taking her class after reading these reviews but she has actually proved to be a very nice prof and tests are easy if you study. I've barely studied and have received 80s-100s. The partial credit is insane and as long as u try, you will always get some credit. 4 quizzes, 2 tests, 1 final
Worst professor ever. Horrible attitude, terrible explanations, and beyond harsh with the grading. She takes pride in failing people and has no desire to help you whatsoever.
There was barely any material provided to study from, her explanations are horrendously awful, and the class was genuinely dreadful to be in.
One of the most intelligent professors I've had. She could always answer any question or was willing to admit she didn't know even if someone asked the question poorly. Not enough practice material for exams though and lectures were the most boring experience of my entire life. Wouldn't take again with her but I respect her a lot.
There is not much practice material. The one TA for all sections was fired halfway through the semester. Her in class examples can be hard to follow, but she is open to questions in class.
She's really not that bad, better than her rating suggests. Yeah, she's a tough grader, but the partial credit is more generous than it has to be. She didn't assign any homework, which is great and terrible at the same time since I waited to right before a quiz/exam to really learn. Its not an easy class, one that clicks for some and not for others
Great instructor. The tests are based on the practice exam problems, so if you study those, you're in good shape. Conceptual questions can be challenging, but she grades fairly and gives partial credit for effort, which I really appreciated.
A lot of people have complained about her, honestly she's quite fair for thermo. She did tell our class there would be a pop quiz for extra credit that never happened, however she did also curve one of the final tests by 16%. Do lots of practice problems in the textbooks and email her questions and you'll do fine. Attendance wasn't mandatory.
She is not as bad as the ratings say. She gives tons of partial credit on exams and you can often get things regraded for points back. NO HW. There is not much time given for exams and quizzes, not enough time to figure out a problem during the test, you must know how to solve it beforehand (PRACTICE!). Our final grade was curved by >10 points.
Mary Zadeh has great lecture slides, but she holds the classroom with a superiority complex. She is often rude to students in the classroom and is really difficult to understand. Any discussion for clarifying class material is dismissed. I agree that lectures shouldn't have distractions, but she approaches it in the entirely wrong manner.
She cares about her students and wants them to pass. Graded on closed note quizzes and exams. Bonus HW for extra credit and practice. Reviews content regularly which helps understanding. Practice problems, show up to lectures, and you'll pass the class. Exams have a bonus question and plenty of partial credit. She made the subject seem easy!
These reviews scared me a lot, but she wasn't awful. Her class is hard, but she gives a lot of material to help you prepare. Bonus problems are 1, almost always similar or the same as quiz/test problems, and 2, give a huge grade boost. I didn't like how late she waited to give us our first assessment (quiz 1 in almost Oct.).
She really wasn't as bad as the reviews say, her lectures weren't the most helpful but the practice problems are similar to the tests and quizzes. Quizzes and tests were our whole grade, plus extra credit for the homework's. The tests were fair, do a lot practice problems from the textbook and you will do fine.
I enjoyed her class. I do not really understand all of the hate she gets. The quizzes are not bad at all, the exams are not too bad either, she kinda hints at what will be on them. She pulls a lot of questions from the textbook, so if you can do those, you will pass with ease. She curved our final grade a lot at the end.
Dr. Zadeh is much better than her negative reviews suggest. Lectures are a little boring sometimes, but she teaches the content well. Offers extra credit homework that frequently pops up on exams and quizzes. If you want to succeed, study the textbook problems. The hardest part of this class was finishing the quizzes in the small time allotted.
