Great teacher! Very helpful! Very easy class, I'm not an English person but this way by far the best English class I've ever had.
Great class! Learned so much!! Amazing teacher. A bit challenging but still awesome. Love that our assignments were blog post. Also Speak up in her class she likes a good class discussion. If you have opinions say them do not be shy.
I didn't really enjoy this class, didn't quite understand her.. she would get mad when you asked twice
Great teacher. Her lectures are interesting and she shows a LOT of Netflix shows. She bases most of her lessons on them. She assigns a lot of work, but its's not too bad. One of the best classes I have ever taken, I learned so much.
She is a great teacher, when I first toke her for English 1301 I thought she was mean but that wasn't the case she holds you accountable. Don't try to B.S her because she is tough. She opened the world to me thru her lectures introduced social issues I never knew about.P.S don't be late attendance or class work wise
I really did not like the work, but i enjoyed the lectures.
I took her for english 1301 and 1302. She teaches on great topics and is very understanding. She is very reasonable.
Class was amazing. If you really want a class that will teach you about social issues and lessons you can think about outside the classroom, this is the class for you. There's only 3 papers all semester and they are reasonable. She is super understanding and is not judgmental when you express a different viewpoint. Would take again.
She's a very tough professor but does an amazing job at making the course interesting and exciting.
Cool sense of humor, but when time to business, she expected you to do so, by the time apointed. Do your assignments and blogs ON TIME, easy A!! I would definitely take her again!
very helpful and easy
This class is challenging for me. It's a lot of reading so if you like reading, this is the class for you. You need to participate everyday in class but if you don't, you can turn in a written response next class because participation matters. Please don't procrastinate in this class because it's a lot of work! Make sure to understand your reading!
This class is a very different English really cool and laid back ,and alot of videos. Only 3 paper a semester. Not a hard class just do your best and try
She is an interesting teacher, very opinionated. Her teaching style is different but I feel it's more effective. Class discussions are fun and cover a wide array of topics. She is very blunt but she does it trying to make sure you remember not to do the same mistakes over and over again.
I really enjoy Professor Nguyen's class. Her lessons were very interactive and catch the attention of the students, motivating them to complete their work. She is a strict but respectful person, a quality that many teachers struggle with. She also uses videos that always relates to the topic we are talking about which helps the students.
The teacher is really strict in attendance and also with the homework
I liked how she was able to incorporate interesting and funny shows such as Modern Family, White Collar, Bones, etc. into our lesson. This made it so much easier to understand and relate. She made me think about stuff that I would normally not question which is what I liked.
The teaching style of Professor Nguyen is fun but at the same time very interesting. She does not teach based on the book which is better because you learn more. Overall I like being in her class.
She is a very good teacher and I enjoyed her class a lot. She was very nice and of course pretty.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. Very unhelpful and not very knowledgeable about the material. Do not take!
I think she is very well just needs to elaborate more on topics and don't give such long papers to write.
Good perfessor. She bases the essays that she assigns over tv shows or movies. Great speaker, but you do have to work for your A.
From the first class, I could tell this class would not be easy and that proved accurate when I received a B- on my first major paper. However, the feedback she gave me after class helped me understand my mistakes and was happy to stay past the class time to give me more feedback. In addition, the lectures are the best I've ever had
This class was the third best class I've ever taken at HCC. I'm a visual learner so I was pleased with the way she teaches just by class discussion or watching episodes from Netflix. She does grade hard but I found that part about her helpful for me. She's also very accommodating, overall she's a great professor.
This course was made engaging in a unique style. Professor Nguyen used modern, and well known TV shows to engage the class and connect it to the teachings. The class in general was based of group discussion and participation, which I also found interesting. There was never a moment in which I felt that my opinion didn't matter.
Professor Nguyen is a fun, cool, and amazing teacher. Her classes are very interesting and easy to be yourself and share your beliefs and opinions.
I really like the teaching style of Professor Nguyen. We watched movies or short clips and relate them back in a group discussion on what we are talking about. If you are one, who is shy and do not participate in class, you have the option to write out a 250 word paper based on the discussions. Overall, she is a real nice teacher and explains well.
Though this instructor is fairly laid back in her teaching style, she is no stranger to giving constructive criticism on papers. With that said, you should probably put forth the effort the first time around before it's time to do a revision. The material in the class wasn't difficult to understand at all. Just remember to participate, you'll be ok
An extraordinary teacher , and unique way of teaching process. She works all semester around one concept, in the end it all comes down to that concept to use all that you have learned. She is a pretty lay-back teacher, and very straight-forward, blunt but, she is pretty cool as a teacher. Work is regular, Hw at tumblr, and decent amount of esays.
The teacjer is pretty chill . She tells you exactly what to do and will give you waus to help you. She does give a good amount of work, bit iys actually interesting.
I do respect Professor Nguyen. Her class subjects are interesting, she doesn't yell, and she constantly asks if we have questions. However, I do see a lack of enthusiasm on her part. When I give well thought out responses when I participate, the usual response is a simple nod or a "yup." Putting the word "Bad" on my essay doesn't teach me anything.
Professor Nguyen incorporates Netflix & Tumblr to our class and homework. She's very straightforward. Everything she says is on the syllabus she hands out at the beginning of the semester. Must attend class. Participating in class discussion is important. It's not like you wouldn't want too being what we talk about is interesting.
Professor Nguyen allows students to learn about new topics that are important to society, and which people may sometimes not be aware of. Her teaching method benefits all learning styles. Classes are interesting and engaging. Students must be prepared to do assignments on time, and actually put effort into their work.
Professor Nguyen promotes critical thinking via contemporary topics and discussion. Her class allows you to become aware of the world you live in and everything is tied back into the major concept. Her class is interesting and engaging. You must attend class, read the required books, and complete assignments on time in order to pass.
The class requires you to pay attention. The style of teaching is different but has a deeper meaning. There is a lot that can be learned from this class, not just English but how society is and real life things that we discuss in class. I found the class very interesting but you have to work very hard.
The class involves topics that get you thinking, and you'll often leave with a different perspective on the topic discussed. Professor Nguyen incorporates television shows and online media in order to teach, which in my opinion is a great way to get through young students. She is very understanding and helpful whe it comes to work. I loved it tbh.
The lessons are good but a little to harsh when grading your long essays
the course is fine its just shes rude sometimes
Ms. Nguyen is an excellent professor who likes to incorporate interesting and important discussion topics and videos. Her teaching style is very different, but I never found myself falling asleep in class I overall really enjoyed this class. All I can say is you must work for your grade, you can't expect to get a good grade if you don't work hard.
I was scared of this class because was my first English writing class. She is amazing, her class is very creative, interesting and dynamic. I'm definitely taking English 2 with her.
Professor Nguyen is a great professor. She gives very detailed feedback so you know exactly what needs to be improved. I learned more about my writing habits and how to be a better writer by taking her class. In addition, she accommodates for every type of student from visual learners (using video clips) to introverts (written responses).
I took 1302 online, she was extremely rude. Her assignments and instructions never made sense, and I don't think she knows how to use the technology (Eagle online and tumblr). She also made us purchase a book (that was difficult to find) and we only used it once. I made an A and I'm just happy I don't have to deal with her again.
Easy course if you know what you're doing.
A challenging but pretty exciting class. She is a really good teacher and learned a lot in class.
Great teacher, has great expectations and will teach about finances, diet, prison and many other social issues that no one really concerns themselves with.
She's a good teacher and she likes question
Great teacher, explains topics throuroghly and well. She makes great connections between every lesson and video we watch. The books selected are interesting and really puts you out of your comfort zone.
She makes herself very clear on what she is asking for. Extremely respectful and professional.
I took ENGL1301 and I had to take 1302 with her again. She is an excellent teacher. Her classes are dynamic and motivates you to write. Highly recommended for and English class. If you work hard she will recognize your dedication. However if you are a lazy student you probably fail this class.
She listens to what everyone has to say when they participate . She respects everyone's opinions and is very patient.
The class is amazing overall. She is a very good professor who gives great lectures. Although some topics may be controversial you will definitely enjoy class duends to the very exciting discussions.
I think that Ms Nguyen is a really nice teacher it is just that the papers are long but she explained that it is mandatory to actually get credit for the class
Professor Nguyen is very skilled in her teaching mannerisms- she knows exactly how to engage with classmates & is always eager to answer questions. She's great at having the classroom feel comfortable with asking questions due to her patience; with a true intention to prepare us for the future using modern methods that the student can relate to.
Easy grader and lots of extra credit assignment .
Being on time is the first priority for every stuff especially for homework and project. NO excused for turn in papers late. You have to concentrate 100% to study in class. Most of time is watching movies in class, take notes and participate all activities in class. 3 projects (5 papers for each). homework each week, 1 presentation, no textbook.
You must participate in this class in order to pass. She gives good feedback and willing to help students. Turn in papers on time, will not accept late papers. Study MLA writing format in order to have a good paper and question on final are base on MLA writing format handbook.
She clearly loves her job, which makes being a student that much more enjoyable. She's always open for feedback but is not afraid to drag you for filth honey. You do have 3 papers (5 pages minimum) but she makes the class comfortable and is intriguing to listen to. You will enjoy this class if you aren't closed off to learning the truth.
I took her class in Fall 2016 and will start off by saying that since the 1302 class is based on social issues, it became apparent that we did not share the same social and political views. However, I seldom felt like she thought my opinion was lesser than her's as many professors do. She did change my mind on a few things but respected my beliefs.
I was the unfortunate duel-credit high school student that took her twice. I am a pretty lazy student when it comes to homework, and after 2 semesters of ENGL1301 with this professor I can say that she gives terrible lectures that revolve around her extremely liberal ideology, full blown feminist, hardly an English class. More like a liberal-arts.
she makes the simple work hard for nothing. she doesn't respect students
Overall I've enjoyed her class. Took her 5 week summer course. Lectures were interesting and engaging. Discussions mostly dealt with current social issues. Two major research papers and a few Tumblr posts.
She is a very good professor. She does give constructive criticism. The class is based on participation.
Overall she teach amazingly and her classes are interesting. She is respectful and give extra crudest. I would take her class if there was English 3.
She is pretty awesome
This professor speaks about very controversial topics throughout the semester, so if you're very sensitive to specific topics I would not reccomend. She does given out short writing assignments but they are very interesting to do. 2 term papers were given but she does give you a process that helps your writing process. Great teacher
Great teatcher
Great teacher, really good at getting the class involved in discussions. I do wish we had spent more time actually discussing the different writing techniques we were using in our homework and papers. Wish she had given us back the first paper before we turned in the second one, or else I wouldn't have made the same mistakes.
Very nice Professor. You need to participate and it makes the class more fun.
Great class
great class discussions about real world issues. learned a lot of new things.
She is heavy on social issues. Kinda of annoying.
It was an amazing semester with this teacher. She explained everything clearly, and simplified all the topics. I do recommend Maryann for ENGLISH 1302. Great professor. Thank you.
This class was so much fun to take. Professor Nguyen is super bright, she can change your way of thinking. She's a tough grader I must say, but with every assignment we get back she gives you great feedback and an opportunity to re write your essay. I would definitely take this class I get.
Really down to earth person and lectures are very eye opening
She really grades papers extensively.
Good research class. Learned a lot about food, money, and prison.
Her style of teaching is challenging, intense and assertive but that encourage me challenge myself more. Overall I gained some very valuable and relevant information.
Summer class, 2017. You gotta work for your grade, but she's fair. Yes, participation matters, but if you're not talkative she allows you to participate in written form. There were two 5-page essays about social issues and you can review the first one. This professor actually teaches and enables students to think outside the box.
Great teacher, discussed a span of controversial topics within a short period of time. Would recommend this class to anyone who enjoys writing and critical thinking. Only some minor assignments that seemed irrelevant. Overall, interesting class with a broad range of subjects.
This teacher is a absolutely amazing. She lectures on topics that are very important in society and teaches you "right from wrong". She shows multiple videos on the topics in which your paper will be written about. You write two research papers and one photo narrative. You must interact in everyday lectures to get credit. Her class is very fun.
Basically you just watch videos in class and discuss them. For homework you read an article and right a blog about it on tumblr. Pretty easy work
i like my professor because she is very professional in creating our minds on imagination and critical thinking. i like the way she express the knowledge by asking very meaningful questions to spark our thoughts and make us think. i learnt a lot!thank you so much
She is a special professor because she gives us essay homework based on quality but no quantity. I learned a lot from her lectures and I love she gave us a lot of opportunities to express our opinions in class.
Really amazing topics, Learned a lot about things I wa clueless about. She takes no late work. You need to participate but she is thoughtful enough if you are shy to speak up you may turn in your comments.
Since this was a 5 week summer course the assignments were back to back. There wasn't a lot of time between the day we received the topic and the deadline. You have to make sure to check for any assignments that need to be turned online, participate during class so you don't have to do a write up the next day. And there's a presentation at the end.

She is patient and responsible.
I enjoyed this class. Very interactive, watch video clips and had open deceptions on mostly social issues. Helps you to see both sides of the issues and how to present an argument.
She's really chill. She gives you tumbr assignments, make sure to do that. Also really try when it comes to the research papers. She'll know if you didn't. She also will show you videos and make you read articles that really help you understand what she's talking about in class. You can tell she's really passionate about what she teaches.
10/10
Professor Nguyen is a great professor. I took Ms. Nguyen for British Literature and also took her for my first Composition class two semesters ago. I love how clear her grading criteria is, I love the selection of literature we needed to read, and I especially love the lectures given. There isnt much extra credit, so go to class- youll be golden
The class was really easy. If you skip constantly you'll find behind. She's a really laid back teacher but a tough grader. Everything is almost self explanatory. Overall, a great person.
Professor Nguyen is respectful as well as very clear with that she wants when it comes to her assignments. She gives clear lectures but they are not heavy lectures. You are in class for approximately an hour, rarely over. Overall, great class. Would take again.
Good teacher with clear road map of what the course will involve. Not lecture heavy, more just read the book and analyze.
Good overall teacher. Not lecture heavy, more just read and analyze, along with group projects.
Very Sweet and Kind. Great person to talk to. Lots of readings and Tumblr assignments due every Sunday. Quite Specific about the text. Pretty straightforward. Don't stress about it, YOU WILL PASS!
She doesn't lecture the class, rather has the class read and teach itself in hopes for the best. Repetitive and class lost interest with the redundant schedule.
This professor managed to make her class a place to share ideas. The materials in the class were relevant to each other.
Good overall teacher. Not lecture heavy and clear understanding of course material.
she's ok
Shes a good professor, made me feel out of my shell
She has LOADS of homework which is due every 2 days, she does not have an organized layout of assignments either. She has papers due in the middle of the week (and other assignments). I had to withdrawal to prevent from getting an F. Does not give good feedback, does not answer promptly to e-mails.
Took her Eng 2 online course. The discussions are interesting, but she simply assigns too much work. There are multiple assignments due every two days WHILE you're working on a research paper, that she grades tough. If you have other demanding classes, a full-time job, and/or children, I would not recommend taking her class at all. Time sucker.
150 word discussion and peer response weekly on informative topics, 2 major 5page papers, and a power point $20 book is required although theres only one assignment done using the book. Shes comes off snappy in emails but the class is straight forward. Easy grader but takes a very long time to grade. Really no way to fail her class. Theres no test!
Expects you to write at the same level of a published author. Discussions are pretty easy, but beware if writing isnt your forte I wouldnt recommend this class at all.
This professor has a lot of assignments with very specific steps, if you don't follow she will penalize you for it. If you are taking a couple classes and working I don't recommend because you have to do about 2 assignments a week plus essays and its almost impossible to study for other classes.
This class consists of, three major papers, a group presentation, online blogs, and a final that takes up two days. Now this teacher is a really though grader but that's it. No support, nor feedback. You can ask her any questions in class and will give a condescending stare and roll her eyes. She's straight forward and does not sugarcoat anything.
Shes an English teacher of course youre expected to write at your best, but she uses different non out-the-book modes to instruct the class which make this English class fun! The topics encourage group lectures+ she openly accepts handwritten responses to discussions. Caring, and involved, go to class, follow syllabus, pass.
I would not recommend this professor. Lots of work, very unclear on expectations, not communicative, extremely slow to grade with little feedback. I normally love writing but this class changed that. For your own sake, steer clear and find someone else.
This is a teacher I do not recommend. I took a 5 week summer class. We had papers due every day which was no big deal. Two major research papers. Make sure you pick a topic she likes/agrees with or else she will fail you. I have it written in email that she would fail me if I wrote about a certain topic. I am glad the class is over.
There are way too many assignments, and they're due every other day. Essays are 5-7 pages and are due on top of other assignments. Although her instructions are vague, she doesn't like it when people email her and doesn't clarify them. Overall it's a time-consuming class and if you have multiple classes, it's not worth your time.
She gives work every two days and there are about two assignments each week. She is a VERY slow grader for some classes and she is a VERY difficult grader. She is also very strict on deadlines, however, will never reply when it counts the most. Her grading scale does not make sense, so you'll never truly understand why you got the grade you did.
Don't take this professor her grading is all overall the place, no clear grading criteria whatsoever. Doesn't respond to emails as she "claims here canvas email is broken". Worst of all the essays are graded once you have written both of them. really pointless!! In all this teacher is knowledgeable but chooses to be a horrible professor by choice
This class was terrible. She is highly liberal and if you have an opposing viewpoint to hers she will not like your papers. On one assignment where she was approving our thesis statements, the ones that weren't approved had conservative views. She also has poor grammar and doesn't understand paragraphs can have diverse ideas.
Wayyyy too much work for an online community college class just for a credit... The 2 discussions you get each week are VERY time consuming. There are 2 papers and a PowerPoint presentation too. So in total there was about 20 discussions where you have to write 500+ words and you have to reply to 2 other students in each discussion.
Super tough grader and I do not understand her grading system at all. She seems all over the place, and you learn via TEDTalks. Some of the articles she wants you to discuss are from sources she says are unreliable. She doesn't explain anything at all. An actual nightmare.
Waaaaaaay too much work for an online class. Do not take her online class.
Honestly the worst professor you can have. Not only takes a month to grade an assignment which should take about a week, but also has a nonsensical and patronizing way of grading your assignments? Forget to put an in-text citation? She marks your whole essay as plagiarism and gives you an F. If you can, try and get Satan as a professor instead.
Honestly the worst online teacher ever. Her grading criteria is not clear at all. She seems all over the place. I do not recommend taking her at all. Very very tough grader, she expects us to write as if we were authors. Too much writing for an online class. Just terrible.
she expects the students to be able to write as an English professor. She wants us to be respectful, but the articles and the videos she gives us to write about doesn't support that at all. She never gives you the feeling that she cares about you. In addition the grading criteria she follows is so stupid, she take so many points for silly reasons.
she is an awful person, doesn't know what she wants , no clear grading criteria. not respectful instructor.
What a nightmare. Honestly I never thought that I would be struggling in English, which is supposed to be a relatively easier class than others. No grading criteria, no feedback, nothing at all. Very horrible. DO NOT, I REPEAT, NOT TAKE HER ONLINE CLASS.
In all seriousness, it should actually be illegal to allow people to teach a college class as poorly as Maryann Nguyen. Most frustrating, stressful teacher Ive had. Tons of homework, no clear instructions, no rubric, no explanation of missing points, no response to email, makes up new stuff to count off every time to avoid giving 100s. The worst!
She is a tough grader. No matter what you do it is almost impossible to get a 100. I do not recommend her to anyone.
She is a tough grader but only because she believes in students having to try their best in each course. She responds quickly to emails as long as you follow her guidelines. You will be doing a lot of writing and reading with a group presentation but her class was a lot of fun. She is very knowledgable in many subjects.
Worst professor in HCC. Shouldnt take her class if you do not want to risk with your GPA. Moreover, I think all of the positive comments in this website about her was write by herself. You can see 22 good comments in just 1 day 07/03/2017. Maybe she do it to improve her rate but it is not right. Never take her class with any reason.
I wouldve given her less than 1 star if there is such a thing but unfortunately there isnt. What an absolute waste of my time. Grading is a joke. Rude and uncommunicative. Do not take her even if shes the last instructor available, not worth the stress.
Be aware of this professor, she is tough grader I have ever taken. Her grades are not predicted, and sometimes you can get high or low scores with no reasons.
the worst professor I have ever had. she is something else.
Don't take her, just don't!!!
I took her online assuming it would be an easy A. I love writing essays I always get A . Well she gave me my first C. I sent her an email if I could see her ( office hours) Bc she didnt correct anything. Just an over all from 3 parts. Im taking it again w/ some one else. She may be good in person. Not online. What a regret.
Very poor communication through this covid-19 ordeal. This has resulted in quite the headache when taking her class. I would NOT recommend you take her course if you could care less and social charged issues that have NOTHING to do with English literature. There was very little instruction on even the very basic level of fundamental writing. Run.
So my advisor told me to email her because she was a month late on grading our essays for her to at least give us a rough estimate of our grades on the paper. But guess what she replied back? "I don't know, I'm not a math teacher." Like, who does that????? And her assignments have little to no correlation to English, I would never take her class
Shes a pretty good teacher. I enjoyed her classes and although there was always a lot of work (and I mean A LOT) it wasnt too bad. Make sure to read the books listed in the syllabus because sometimes youll have to write lengthy papers on them and summaries wont cut it.
I took this professor in summer 2020 semester the first 5 weeks for ENGL 1302, because I picked a professor based on ethnicity that should be good and kind, but I haven't looked up on her rating before I enrolled. Her online English class is kind of okay; I got a C from her on my first essay, which I should've picked other professor than this.
