She's a good prof. She's interesting to listen to and puts up a lot of helpful and funnt pictures. Her tests are a little hard and cover too much material though.
Rather dry speaker. Boring at times and material is too easy. She is a nce person but not much of an educator.
She's a good prof. Her classes are interesting and the textbook is pretty good too. Tests cover a bit too much material and are challenging but it's supposed to be.Highly recommend her.
Awesome! She works so hard and always has an excellent lecture prepared. I would take any of her classes again. Way to go for a first year prof!
great prof, upbeat and a interesting to listen to. Take her course.

yeah she's lazy and a crank! she gets her TA to do all the marking, what she tells you to study isn't on the test at all! she refuses to put her notoes on pdrive b/c of a few stupid people. she goes way to fast to even read whaht is on the overehead! i would never recommend her.
Okay, whoever wrote that last comment must have gotten a bad grade. Dr. Fisher is such a dedicated professor. She works hard and had a good head on her shoulders. I would recommend her class to everyone. She is clear and gives great examples. The material is well covered and the exams are fair.
she is a great proff. very great at teaching the material and gets us intrested. very good person and easy to talk to. i would recomend her class to anyone who is intrested in psycology. if you need help she is always willing to help.
anyone who thinks shes not a good prof doesnt know what theyre talkin about. shes so easy to listen to and keeps the class entertained. i would highly reccomend her.
She is not a very good instructor. Though she seems to be a nice person, she just cannot teach. Read the textbook, skip class, and you will still get the same mark.
Horrible professor. Class was somewhat interesting, but when you're scrambling to copy the notes down it seems like you don't have time to pay attention to what she's saying. Makes her TA mark all the exams and papers. Not impressed.
I got a good mark in the class but did not find her teaching methods helpful at all. I agree class was not useful and did not learn a thing because of the hectic note copying. Also there is so much material for a 1/2 credit and she just made the situation worse.
shes a great prof, shes so easy to listen to and makes the lectures go by fast. her tests are kinda tough and the papers too but all in all it was good course.
So Hard. Easy enjoyable class. Tests are way harder then what she teaches in class. Hard marker on esays. Enjoys the fact that her class is not easy. My lowest grade this year.
I just completed this course as of today. As usual, her exam covered non-pertinant material, including arbitrary figures and statics, which was NOT stressed in class nor in the text. Her "lectures" were trivial at best. I learned a lot from this course, unfortunately, what I've learned is unlikely t
Interesting class but the exams are VERY difficult because (as others said) she tests you on trivial information and random stats, things that you would never study... the class is interesting but VERY difficult-
Has a great personality and her assignments aren't bad, but the tests are BRUTAL. Lectures were a total waste because almost all test material is taken from the text and based on trivial, obscure facts. It's nearly impossible to get a great mark unless you're psychic or have a photographic memory.

Decent prof. Dr. Fisher's really laid back and willing to negotiate and compromise with her students. Her lectures are interesting and so is the text - and that helps when you have to read your butt off. I'd definitely recommend her to anyone who's willing to work to earn a good grade, not someone who wants an easy A from a bird course.
WOW. I managed to pull out of the class with a C- thanks to her help and understanding. If you want to get a good grade, you have to pay attention to detail. NOT a bird course. The material comes off to be kinda easy until you get her exams. Hardest multiple choice EVER. And VERY harsh on marking research papers. She expects perfection.
very hard, toughest exams. but teaching was not bad. got c+ from that course. she isn't a good choice.
interestin course and the way she teaches it is interesting but the exam are hard not an easy course, she is nice and a good speaker though
Unnecessairly hard! Avoid her at all costs
Why haven’t they fired her yet? TERRIBLE PROF! I feel bad for anyone who takes her class!
Oh PALEEASE!!!! Its the worst course in the entire world!!! dont go to the class, dont read the text book... heck just by a random drug fact book and study it and u stand half a chance. I have all A's and ill be lucky to pull out of her class with a C
Really hard exams, takes lots of hours to read the huge chapters, and doesn't really even help anyways. Pretty boring class. Bad teaching style. Don't take this class
This class blew my mind. She tells it how it is, be it about sex,****, perceptions, money, etc. Then she backs it all with data! If you want to learn to write a psy paper, she'll show you. Amazing, inspirational woman. Slackers need not sign up.
AMAZING PROF! I can understand what people are saying about the classes being unnecessarily difficult, but she makes them super interesting because she is so passionate about what she teaches. If you do well in her class it is because you earned it and deserve it, something to be proud of. Don't be scared away by the negative comments!
Definately not a bird coarse, but she makes class interesting. She explains things well, and is creative.
Yeah, so her class is a bit difficult. This is university people!! Psychology students have it pretty good so far so if you can't handle having to do a little work I think you shouldn't be at university. No wonder they call us Robie High.
Interesting proff...you have to go to class because she doesn't use the PDRIVE or computer at all...all notes are hand copied...she pretty much goes by the book though.
decent prof, i've had better but i wouldn't drop her class just because she was teaching it. she covers material from the text and also her own notes. it is frustrating that she doesn't use p:drive for notes or web ct or something. that would make the class much better. she has a very large number of notes and it sucks having to write them out ever
Material is very interesting and she knows alot about it. The tests are pretty hard tho and contain alot of chapters each. Lots of reading and notes in class. Very interesting class but pretty difficult nonetheless no matter how much u like it.
She would put nothing on the p-drive. The notes that we had to take really made no sense, nothing tied together, just all point form.
If i had a dollar for every time i fell asleep inthis class, i could drop it and pay for it some other somester with a different proff, she seems enthused about her material but even my grandfather would think her method of teaching is dated... i mean, clear acetate sheets on a 40 yr old mirror projector?!?!? C'MON!!!
Exams are brutal. You have to know the text in detail and all the lectures.
Ugh. Fisher refuses to help anyone except her few favorites. Unflexible, Boring, and Horrible Professor. Cannot come to class on time. talks about her cats (even said the cats would randomly select exam questions. really)... I found her unprofessional at best, especially when she talks about her students personal matters. DO NOT TAKE FISHER!!!!!!!!
Fisher appears to be one of those young professors with something to prove. My advice to anyone would be to aviod contact with this person.
Maryanne ROCKS! People may find her a rough prof, but she is not there to give an away an 'A' - she is there to make you learn the material. And this she does. You will leave her class with a great knowledge of the material. I suggest to those of you who are in University to actually learn - Take Dr. Fisher's courses! You will get alot out of them.
Dr. Fisher is a great professor. She aims to actually teach her students, which does require work. If you study hard and attend her class, it will be an enjoyable and very rewarding experience.
Unprofessional, Immature, and boring. The fact that she is on tenure track makes me embarrassed to hold a degree from SMU. If you are an honors student, I would recommend you do not ask her to supervise your thesis, as she appears to take pleasure in dropping her students partway through the semester.
she gets so excited about what she is teaching, provides good examples, and really knows her stuff.
Class was interesting and sometimes hard. if you dont show for class then you dont get the notes which are usually word for word on the exams. I wish she used powerpoint instead of the over head but it does motivate you to go to class
A lot of people don't like Maryanne's teaching style because she tests relatively hard. Though she expects a little too much from a first year course, she is very passionate about what she does and teaches it well. All in all, I really liked her. If you go to class and put time into learning the material you'll do fine. I put a lot of work into it
Very difficult prof. The tests are brutal, not clear on what to expect and asks about topics that weren't focused on in the book or lecture. Extremely hard marker on papers. Clearly has class favourites.
She is the best prof I have had.She explains everything REALLY well. She doesn't put her notes online, which makes things a bit harder if you miss class. But,during lectures she'll give you hints on what she'll ask for a long answer question(or tell you straight out that it'll be on the exam.)Read your notes, the book,go to class and you'll get an A
Dr. Fisher is an excellent teacher. She has an incredible breadth of knowledge about her field, and is very active in research. The class was challenging, but always interesting. My only concern was that her other academic work meant that we were taught by her TAs a few times, and I would have preferred hearing lectures from her.
This is an interesting class as Marianne is doing a lot of work in the field. However, this is not a bird course. Her tests are really challenging as she expects you to know a lot of information. Highly recommend this class to students who will work for their grade.
Not the Easiet, but love this prof would take any class by her knows her stuff love her to death
Very cynical, very bitter, trys to be funny but is NOT. I'm sorry but just because your profs in your 845749 years of university were hardasses doesn't mean you should unleash that bitterness on your current students. Is it really that much of a pain for you to post & LEAVE your slides up on the p drive? I mean, really?
Took the Evolutionary Psych course with her. A great course, and the online system was pretty nifty. She's a great prof, but she was travelling around a lot, so it was hard to get in touch with her. However, the TA's knew their stuff. The course was really interesting, and her tests were pretty easy too, just a lot of reading.
Took an online ev psych course with her. Interesting class, very relevant to everyday life and I still use things I learned in it. TA's are fabulous, but DON'T FALL BEHIND ON READINGS OR ONLINE MODULES. That was my biggest downfall (why I got A- and not A). Cool class, would take it with her again!
Very confused by aug/10 rating. Class was told to only contact prof it case of emergency. She was on Vacation for 4 of the 6 week course. modules conflicted textbook a couple of times, tests were challenging. Final exam date was only confirmed the day before(yes day before!) The TAs seemed helpful. I did ok(A-)but I truly felt I taught myself.
Awesome Professor! Take her if you can. Cares about students and always up for answering questions. She made the course interesting and fun. You have to keep up with the readings, but overall a great course.
Very nice prof! She is tough but very interested in teaching the course. Text book is a must. Even though it was a harder course, I would definitely take her again!
I loved her! She's clear and fair. She spreads her excitement for the subject and is evidently knowledgeable.
Maryanne is an awesome prof. She 's so genuinely interested in what shes teaching, and keeps her students engaged. Course is easy if you read the book and practice the self tests. I would definitely recommend taking any class with her!
A lot of word is involved in this class and I suggest you take it as early as possible in your degree. The information you gain about how to build your CV for grad school, scholarships, applying to school, etc. is invaluable. Maryanne was super enthusiastic and brought in a guest lecturer every week so we were always learning new things.
most average prof ever! don't bother reading the book, go to class and get her lecture notes, the book will not help you. the class is not academic, the worst class at smu thus far. her class is hard to sit through. almost unbearable
Key words: Keep up. Make sure you take notes ad ask questions. Really easy to fall behind both in her class course and online course. When it comes to assignments, she litterally has it all out for you so just follow it and you'll get a great mark. Tests... Make sure you study. Legit study. Clearly a very busy woman but enjoys sharing her knowledge
She is clearly very passionate about what she teaches and she makes it interesting. But it is not very clear what to study for the exam. A lot is from the textbook thats not even covered in class, she expects way to much.
This class is hard. although it is a first year class , it was harder than third year psyc classes i took. there is a lot of information to know and the textbook is key. If you have to take it make sure you study your ass off.
Unfortunately, this was the most difficult class I've had to take. One could argue that it means the teacher is thorough. However, trying to push so much information, in such a disorganized and decentralized fashion is unrealistic. Exams are rarely about what material appears (oddly enough) and overall it was just an unpleasant experience.
Wonderful lady - super nice and approachable! Her courses are not meant to be a class you can sleep through and expect an A in. Read. The. Readings. It's a reading intensive course - and she makes students aware on the first day. The multiple choice on her tests were strictly based off textbook readings - that weren't covered at all in class.
I took this class twice: online and in class. It's overwhelming as an online course, but she's very organised. In class it's hard, but she's very clear, approachable and engaging. Maryanne knows and studies gender, and you'll learn a lot. It's not an easy course at all, but it's so worth the work. Avoid the online course, without experience in them
Dr. Fisher is passionate about Evolutionary Psychology, and she wants you to be as well. She is engaging and dynamic, and she makes classes worth attending. The tests are demanding, you must know all of the material from both lectures and the book. With diligent reading and review you will get a good grade. I would take a course with her again.
Really gr8 prof and the gender course was very interesting. Don't take if you are looking for a laid back course. Every lecture is jam packed with info so you have to go to class and keep up. Tests are decent if you study. Papers are usually very structured and detailed. Cant last minute her papers! What you expect a university course should be
Maryanne is an excellent professor and supervisor. Although her courses are tough, and she expects a lot from you, she is very supportive and enthusiastic about the topics. She knows her stuff.
Contradicting information online and in the tetbook.
not a good prof. i do not recommend taking online courses from her especially. tests were brutal and never seemed to make much sense. stay away!!
Dr. Fisher was by far my favourite prof this semester. Her lectures were very interesting and she is a really caring individual. This is NOT an easy course however so I wouldn't recommend taking it if all you're looking for is an easy A. You must have the text book, without doing the readings there is a very slim chance you'd pass the exams.
Maryanne is hands down one of the sweetest and most accommodating psych profs at smu. She is down to earth, genuine, and a fantastic lecturer. I respect her a tremendous amount and would suggest her as a prof to anyone and everyone! As long as you attend class you'll be okay, and class is definitely not boring!
I took this class as an elective in my first year and I absolutely LOVED it!! Maryanne is a caring prof and she really cares how her students do in her class. She also loves what she's teaching so I found it easy to listen to her lectures. The class moved kinda fast in my opinion for a first year. I would sign up for an 8:30 if Maryanne was the prf
Advanced Evolutionary Psychology was not an easy course it had a lot of work but Dr. Fisher is a professor who wants to see you succeed. She is so willing to help and accommodate to make sure you have what you need to be successful. She can come off as a little intimidating at first but is actually very warm.
Maryanne is one of my favourite professors at SMU. You definitely have to put in effort to succeed in her classes, but she makes the material super easy to understand & is readily available to help her students. I throughly enjoyed every single class with her & this course was the reason I declared my major in psychology.
This class made my life terrible. I could study forever and still never be ready for the tests. You have to take the lectures and textbook readings, both VERY long and 2 seperate things, and learn them all. I absolutely couldn't juggle this with my other classes as much as I wanted to. The final assignment is the worst. Tests terrible. Nice person
Best professor Ive ever had. One of the most caring and relatable profs. She will help you with anything you need. Course was super interesting as well.
This is a first year class that she treats like a fourth year. 60% of your grade is based on 10 quizzes with 10 questions each so be sure not to get a bad grade on any of them or your grade for the whole class will be garbage. If you're looking for a bird course, this is not it. There is so much wrong with the way she runs this online course.
Amazing teacher, very caring. She always responded to my emails and in a very sincere manner. Even took a suggestion I had for the class considering test layouts / grading! Would definitely take one of her courses again.
While I didn't love the course or textbook Dr. Fisher was herself very good. Her lectures were never boring, she was available to answer questions and willing to explore other perspectives and even criticize the field. The tests weren't too hard but you definitely needed to be on top of the work to pass.
Awesome professor but pretty hard class. I have mixed feelings about the class as I thought the content was very heavy at times. Very accessible and always willing to help, but not sure if I would take her class again provided I had the choice between other professors.
Maryanne Fisher is the best professor I've ever had at SMU. My experience with both her evolutionary psychology and ethology classes has been exceptional. In addition to providing easy-to-follow, relevant examples, she demonstrates a high degree of passion for what she teaches. In addition to this, she also provides the readings for free.
The course is graded solely off tests. The tests are extremelly difficult and what is covered in the lecture, does not correlate with what is on the tests. Since the weekly test make up the majority of your grade, if you do bad on a few, don't expect to do well in the course. The time allocated for the test are never enough to read the questions.
Dr. Fisher is a very humble, understanding and great person, she will go out of her way to help you with anything you may need and talks to you like a friend. we had 10 short online open book quizzes, in-person midterm and final (notes allowed). fair grader but questions can be tricky, 90% of quiz answers are word for word in the readings
Half of the material you're tested on is from her slideshows that you need to be in class to access/understand. The other half is from the textbook she never goes over. For a first year course it is so much more difficult than i needs to be, you're given 3 exams and that's all you're graded on.
Dr. Fisher is one of the best group A psychology profs I have had. Dr. Fisher is super lecture heavy and the tests are difficult. However, she is one of the sweetest profs and provides meaningful feedback on assignments. Attend the lectures and do the readings! Powerpoints have fill in the blanks that you need to be at the lectures to understand.
She is a great person and very kind, however as an A average 4th year student this course was overpowering all of my courses, tests are extremely difficult and if you do not read every single word and fully understand them in the textbook, you will fail. Lectures are NESSECARY or you will fail. Should not be a first year course
You have to attend every class. I never got bored during class time, she's very passionate about what she's teaching and has a great sense of humour. The only things you're graded on are 2 midterms and the final. If you complete the self quizzes she provides before each test, you'll do well. Textbook is free on brightspace
I loved this class. She's a fantastic lecturer, and a great person with a good sense of humour. She's reasonable and understanding, especially if she knows you're working hard. (One time I skipped an entire section of an exam by accident and she let me redo it despite me not seeing her emails for many days). Don't be scared to ask her questions!
You have to attend every class, as there are gaps in the slides she put up on Brightspace. Feels like alot more compares to my other first year classes with the amount needed to know for exams, 50ish pages of reading every week. She is understanding, first exam is worth the least and SONA boost your grade by 3% at most.
This course was something else. There is no textbook but she posts the readings for the week and it's A LOT. You need to go to all lectures or you will fall behind so quickly. There are 3 exams and thats all you're graded on which are super hard. This class was the most overwhelming i've had without question. First years should not take it at all
Great professor - engaging lectures, reasonable grading, and always willing to help. Textbook is free and self-quizzes are super useful. unstuck AI was a game-changer for exam prep.
She is very kind and approachable, and her lectures are engaging and interesting. The material itself is not difficult, BUT the exams are extremely challenging and often include content that has not yet been taught which is extremely frustrating. 70% of the students dropped the class by the end of the semester. I would avoid, not worth the stress.
