She is a great teacher and understands and hepls the people that are in the class to get an A and are working full time! Great teacher
Great teacher. Took complex economic terms/ideas and made them understandable and interesting. I highly suggest taking her for any/all economics courses.
she is very helpfull and will make you like the subject even if you show no interested in it at first. The tests are supper easy if you pay attention to the lectures. I got an A for macro and micro because os her class.
Loved taking her class, although the class was long and therefore the lectures were long it was easy to grasp the info. She gave lots of chances for extra credit and used the textbook so little she said if we didn't want to buy it we didn't have to. The tests weren't easy but she made them open note which helped alot. Won't regret choosing her.
Attendance is required and her lectures are very boring. but all the tests/homework/quizzes are online so they are easy. She does require a paper at the end of the course
I LOVEEE Prof Ryan! Shes is the GREATEST! Her lectures are very interesting and helpful, her quizzes are easy if you study and review in class, midterm and final exams even easier. The paper wasnt too bad either. Make sure to attend the reviews! Love her so much. I wish she would be my professor for all my classes, but thats just wishful thinking.
online tests good to have a friend
Before taking this class, I HATED econ classes.BOOK NOT REQUIRED.Everything(including HW,quizes, tests)is in the ECONPORTAL(REQUIRED).She posts the PP slides and I took notes from there.Plenty of extra credit given.Took the condensed MACRO in half a semester and got an A(over 100%).Go to class,PARTICIPATE,and DO THE WORK ON TIME!BEST econ professor!
MaryEllen is one of the best teachers i've had at NVCC. all HW is online, there are in class & online quizzes, as well as extra credit! I thought econ was chinese until i took her class! gives you plenty of opportunities to get an A!
Awesome teacher
Very good professor. She understands Economics inside out. I would not recommend 8 week course as there are alot of materials to cover. She is a great professor and very understanding if you miss your quizes or HW
She drops the lowest exam. Each test has 5 points extra credit. (4 exams and H.W. online) 1 final exams online
She drops the lowest exam. Each test offers 5 points extra credit. (4 exams and H.W. online) 1 final exams online , 4 in class quiz and final quiz (quiz questions are HW questions ) and application paper at least 4 pages. H.W. 17% Quizzes online: 20% Quizzes-in class:9% Paper:23% Final-online:23% Final- in class8% TOTAL880pts 100% hard to get A!
wonderful teacher, very helpful, and keeps class interesting. if you do the work this class is pretty easy
Amazing professor! Totally understands what she is talking about and is willing to help. She also understands that you have a life outside of class so as long as you don't lie about what happened she is normally very understanding. If you stay on top of your work you'll do well!
Great professor, very knowledgeable and keeps things interesting. Just finished my Econ 202 class with her and wish I had taken her for Econ 201. VERY fair if you need some extra time to complete homework because of your life outside of class.
SHE is AWESOME. Definitely take her class if you have to take ECO 202. She gives 4 quizzes which are online and 4 in class quizzes which are from homework questions. Homework questions are based one her lectures and textbook chapters. she drops the lowest quiz and the homework. Attendance is important. If you show effort, you will get an A.
Just finished an eight weeks 201 with her, she is GREAT and must take! that's all i can say easy A
Her class is a LOT of work, but that also means that you get a lot of grades. She drops several of your worst ones. As a person though she is amazing. She is SO understanding and fair. Willing to accomidate to any situation. She's also funny and tries to make class interesting (even a 4 hour summer class!). I would definitely reccomend her.
Prof. Ryan is wonderful. Do all assignments and you will receive good grades. Oh, she's SO nice too. If I remember correctly, she used to teach at NOVA in Sterling.
Professor Ryan is awesome and has a good heart she truly cares about her students and will help you in any way possible. I look forward to taking her econ 202 class. Thank you Professor Ryan you are truly a wonderful Professor.
Professor Rayan is awesome. she is wonderful teacher. She is the best.
Great professor, really felt like I was learning about the economic situation in our country and how it applies to the coursework. Easy if you do the work and graded assignments of course. Class attendance is definitely crucial, but overall an easy A if you just show up and do all the assignments on time.
Prof Ryan is really knowledgable about economy and is a great teacher, but final exam and all quizzes are extremely difficult. They will drop your grade from a B/C to a D/F all quizzes and exams are online done on the Econ portal + 2 projects
If you're looking for a more traditional lecture based class were you actually learn the material for the quizzes and tests, then you might want to consider taking this course with someone else. The class is fast paced. TONS of idiotic group discussion. If you're just want to learn the subject and not deal with others than DO NOT take this class.
She gives WAY to much group work. She requires that you stay the entire time and if you leave early she takes away points from overall grade which can hurt if you aren't interested in talking with your fellow students. Take this with someone that actuall teaches the class and isn't interested in group idiocy.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND! If you want to learn A LOT & study very little, take her. The only thing you need is the e-book ($80). Everything is done online. The 6 week summer course is very fast paced but gets easier if you keep up. She gives TONS of extra credit and responds to emails right away. You review lectures at home & do homework in class.
Take her. Her class consist of powerpoint slides but it actually is interesting. All HW/quizes are online. She's very understanding. If you show effort, you WILL get at least a B. Pro tip: The honors version of the course in my opinion was easier than the regular class.
Very difficult class, I had trouble keeping up! I had no problem with group discussions but her teaching was so confusing, I don't recommend her if you don't like teacher that talks so much and so fast! Her exams are difficult.
The teacher is very nice. Didn't need to buy the textbook, but i did need to buy the online connect which was where all the assignments were done on. Connect was helpful. I still got a C in class I wish we actually did some assignments that would help get a better grade. Connect wasn't really helpful. Class was a bit boring.
Tests and quiz are hard. She just read PPT so fast. She doesn't lecture so much.Hw is hard you can't find on book or lecture.
Hard,avoid her.
She was so nice and her class isn't that hard but you do have to do the homework. She gives you tons of options for extra credit and there is a project due at the end of the semester that is basically a 'grade booster'.
Good professor
I love her. Very helpful. She gives a lot of extra credits. The exams aren't so easy, but nothing that you cant handle which btw are online.
Maryellen is such a nice, caring teacher. She REALLY cares about her students and LOVES what she is teaching. I had some trouble because I don't like econ but she definitely does and will help you no matter what. Lots of EC, she can be generous with make ups and just overall a good person to have as an econ teacher. Take her class!
Had her for an 8 week semester for Macro-Economics. One of the best economics professor I've had since high-school. Definitely recommend her to anyone interested in economic policygovernment affairs.
(HYBRID class) Professor Ryan has a passion for macro economics and it shows. She offers extra credit opportunities and accepts late work (with penalty). If you listen to the lectures and complete homework you should have no problem passing this class. She is a caring teacher.
More like self-study class. She is nice. You supposed to prepare everything at home and in class, you only do group-work and practice. Better buy a book or u'll struggle. No lecture at all in her class, it's your job.
She has to love teaching because the knowledge she has on Economics is insane. Love her because she is very helpful and knows her stuff. If this isn't you're stuff you most likely will get bored. Also she engages in group work which personally I like. I asked for help and she went over every single question I asked. Take her. If you do your job A-B
Professor Ryan is one tough lady. She talks too fast. Her test are very difficult. She is confusing. Her homework is hard too. She gives tough feedback as well. I've taken this class a second time, and thought that she would be helpful. I was wrong. So wrong. So don't take her class.
Excellent teacher. Gives extra credit. Drops lowest test score. Always available for clarification. Very knowledgeable in her field. I was not looking forward to this class but she made it interesting and taught you why it matters. Would recommend her for any business class!
This class was very hard for me because I didn't have any interest in the subject, and it was hard to pay attention. But the professor helped me out a lot and saved my grade. As well as some very helpful classmates. Be prepared to put in extra work out of class. and I would highly suggest study groups!
I loved her classes! I took her about 3 times and did great in all the courses. She makes the topics fun and interactive and goes above and beyond in ensuring you do as best you can in the course. It's not just a sit down lecture, you get the chance to interact with others and learn about things that you actually want to learn about!
You really need to read in order to pass. She loves graphics, statistics and will test you on that. All class work will be on the test, make sure you get it. Test questions comes from the homework, sounds easy, but there are tons of questions there. If you are not sure, you better ASK! She s really nice, but ECO is hard! No extra credits :(
Just like the last poster, she is really nice. Tests were difficult for me, since the study material consisted of easily over 100 questions from the hw. Cant miss the one day on the boring learn-smarts or 0 no excuses. If you are good at taking tests take her. If not try to find an easier teacher.
Professor Ryan is amazing! Easy grader and definitely knows her stuff. Took honors econ and it was a pretty easy class. Lectures are all online, including our textbook and in class, we just had discussions about economics. Take her!!
She was awesome! I highly recommend taking her. She takes her homework and puts it right on the test, and for the in class examples as long as you take notes and pay attention it will help. We had a paper to write which was easy. She lets you pick your topic, and it helps boost your grade.
Professor Ryan knows her stuff. She loves statistics and graphs. I had a hard time actually learning the content but her tests were fairly easy for me. All HW is online. Just google the answers - you'll find them on quizlet. Then Test Q's are taken straight from HW. Easy as long as you study/memorize the multiple choice.
I don't recommend Professor Ryan, she seems to know her stuff but is a bit scatter-brained. The entire class did not understand the lectures and was confused every class. If you don't mind untidy graphs and notes, and lack of time in class to ask questions, then take her. Tests were not hard, following lectures were. She is a very caring person.
Professor Ryan was amazing! She is so kind and truly cares about each of her students. The tests are not terrible as long as you are willing to study. She talks a little fast, but she is willing to help at any time - just ask. There is a paper due at the end of the semester, but it is really laid back. She is truly on of the best!
Knows and enjoys her subject thoroughly. Reading must be done prior to each class (enforced by online textbook). Exam questions are taken directly from homework and in-class assignments, which are homework-style questions worked in small groups. Ties subject to current events and fosters class discussions. Excellent professor.
she's an AMAZING professor, she cares for her students and would make time to meet with you before the test to make sure you pass. if you have a good memory you can get straight As on all your tests without having kill yourself studying. Highly recommend her. Also, there is a paper at the end of the semester however it is super easy!
Very nice professor she makes time to meet up with you and help you if you're struggling. ALOT of homework. I hated the hybrid assignments. Time management is the key to this class. You have to turn in thing on time. Test come from the homework.
Professor Ryan is such a caring, helpful, and awesome professor I never met. She would like to spend time to work with you and explained extremely clear if you have any difficulties with the study.
Awesome Macro and Micro Economics course. Very inspired and engaging lectures with up to date examples and analysis. Professor grades quickly and gives clear feedback. Cooperates about late work. Affordable course materials and fairly easy to read and understand.
Best professor I ever head. Wish she'd study more courses
I would recommend her to everyone. Easy test. Tests are the exact copy of the homework. And all the questions are multiple choices. Just two major essays which she gives you more than enough time to finish them. Very good prof.
Mrs. Ryan is by far my favorite Econ professor at NOVA. She understands the subject matter can be overwhelming for those whom want nothing to do with business/econ and instead of weighting the class purely on tests, allows you two major essays to keep your grade up! Study for every chapter and do the homework; if you do so, you will get an A.
Very responsive to her email. Lots of extra credits. Quizzes at the beginning of almost every class. 2 essays. She'll do her best to explain everything as clearly as possible. She does Kahoot reviews before each exam, which will be really helpful. If you actually put sometimes to study the materials she gives you, you'll get an easy A.
Professor Ryan is the best professor I have come across at NVCC. I took what I would consider my hardest class at NVCC with her and the way she is able to keep her classes entertained and well educated on the topics she is going over is second to none. She truly cares and is always available during office hours for help. Highly recommended.
I loved this teacher! I had her for Macro and she was great. You will have to write some essays but they connect to each other and she is great at responding to emails and giving help outside of class! The tests are based off of the hw exactly which makes studying easy too. I will be taking her again for Micro
She was amazing and incredibly helpful when we didn't understand something. Macroeconomics is just a hard class and man did she do her best to make it easier. Very responsive to emails and willing to work out times to meet outside normal office hours
Took Professor Ryan as a 16 week hybrid. She's incredible with responding to emails, super quick and helpful. As a hybrid there was quite a bit of work but if you stay on top of it (unlike me) you'll pass no problem. Don't procrastinate and just try and you'll be fine. Amazing Professor super caring would 100% take again. Only 2 essays and 3 tests.
I took her for ECO 201 and ECO 202. Great teacher and either loves you and wants to help you or dislikes you and wants nothing to do with you. Thank goodness I was the former. Hard class, hard tests, decent quizzes etc. Solid teacher. Good freshman class.
Hybrid course. You have one quiz, discussion board, and a math problem each week. She goes over assignments thoroughly in class. Assignments are clear, just answer each question and you will get an A. 2 essays. 3 tests. Kind and knowledgeable. Easy grader. Extra credit points available. Small lecture every class. Put in the effort, easy A
Professor Ryan is a both a wonderful teacher and human being. The class consisted of 3 tests, each with 30 multiple choice question (taken directly from the homework) & two free-response questions. There were also two essays, both with clear grading criteria for what she was expecting. Overall she made learning Econ as good as it could get
She gives good examples and explanations about economics. She knows what shes talking about and is inspirational when she talks but not overboard like some professors. You know what will be on the test, exact questions and problems. Papers have easy to follow guidelines and rubric. 8 week class did not feel overwhelming.
She reply's to posted questions and emails promptly, but her responses can confuse you more. Going to lectures helps a lot but unless you're really into economics you're likely to zone out. Very heavy on homework, set aside at least a few hours each night. Online assignments can have very confusing and unclear instructions.
A chill professor, but the class is difficult.
Good professor for others, but skipped around too much and too fast for me to keep up. Lots of homework, but tests are straight off the homeworks. Very understanding and nice, but the homework was way too much for me to try and keep up with. I would recommend for fast or easy learners.
Professor Ryan is an econ professor who knows what she's talking about. Class isn't too bad, just show up for lectures and listen and she'll guide you to at least a B. Reading the textbook really isn't necessary if you attend lectures because she really focuses on test material in class and lets you know what's going to be on it.
Professor Ryan is a very understanding person. If you need help with anything she explains it thoroughly.
Professor Ryan is an awesome professor. She really wants her students to succeed and will make sure you do so if you want too. I would recommend reaching out to her the minute you don't understand a concept this will definitely help you succeed. The class was a little challenging just because the material is not intuitive not because of the prof.
I took Professor Ryan's Macroeconomics class this summer and could not be happier with my decision. A 6-week econ class is not for the faint of heart but if you put in the work you'll be fine. She was impeccably organized, knew her stuff, was passionate about economics and was always there to help you if you needed it. Highly recommend her!
Omg. Professor Ryan was an amazing eco 201 teacher! I really did enjoy her class. First off, SHE WANTS YOU TO SUCCEED. She is here to help you! She will reply to your emails pretty quick within a 2 day time frame tops. Her exams were online, in/class with your webcam on BUT it was open book!!! Homework is due every week but its so easy. 10/10 :)
Professor Ryan was honestly awesome, she really seemed to be passionate about economics and teaching. She provides so many resources for you to pass the class from video lectures to mini videos she makes to explain more complex models. The class itself is pretty hard and has a lot of homework and exams, but if you study you will pass.
best Econ teacher at NOVA, she is very nice and super helpful. if you take her class and do the work you are guaranteed to pass.
Professor ryan is literally the best she actually cares about her student and wants to see them succeed. the tests are really hard but there are tons of other assignments that will bring your grade up. She is big on group work even with zoom so be prepared.
she's amazing!! no words!!
I took econ202 for extra credits and choosing prof. Ryan was the best decision I could've made. I do not like Econ at all and she made it so much more bearable. super clear with the assignments, one paper, and a very organized class. she also starts the class with a ten minute discussion which was really nice. favorite class. definitely take her
I could write an essay on how great Prof Ryan is. 3 tests and 1 big paper, but she will help you if you need it just ask. Very caring, only prof I had during Covid that encourages discussion & participation among classmates. Very easy and interacting with her is like sitting down with an old friend, so laid back and genuinely wants you to succeed.
Her exams are worded weird, so its hard to know what resources will help study. Shes understanding, and shell work with you to find a solution. Still, didnt make much sense to me.
In this class, she will provide 5 assignments, and three exams. Also, there are quizzes for every week. She will provide the criteria for assignments. And the exam will be easy by studying.
She is a really good teacher and knows what she is talking about. But sometimes wasn't that clear during class and her test were extremely hard. You gotta put lot of effort in this class.
Prof. Ryan is such an amazing Professor! Course consists of 3 big unit tests + Firm essay and she is very understanding and lenient on late work. Every single lesson for every chapter/unit can be found on her canvas page, and it's all well organized. She is the opposite of a tough grader, and gives detailed feedback. She genuinely cares about you!
I have taken Professor Ryan's class two times and she is the best instructor that I have ever taken. She is nice and cares about all of her students, and responds to her emails quickly. She also gives us numerous extra credit opportunities by making up low test grades. Her materials and assignments are easy to comprehend when you get used to them.
She is very flexible and understanding. Her lectures are easy to understand, and if you don't understand somethin she will help you outside of class during her office hours.
Professor Ryan really loves what she's teaching. She really wants her students to reach out to her so she can give extra help outside of class. Economics is a tough subject for me, but her motivation made it a bit easier for me. She wants her students to succeed and she's accessible. I'd take her again if I had to take eco202.
Take this professor, one of the best
I took her Zoom class. She cares about her students. She is quick to reply to emails. I did have to study a lot for her class to get an A. There are 3 unit tests + one paper. She is very clear about the topics that are expected to be on the test. She is sweet and wants her students to do well. I will be taking her for ECO 202
Not enough can be said about how great Professor Ryan is. She is one of the most, if not the most, understanding and caring professors that I have ever had. She explains content thoroughly and cares about the success of her students.
I recommend this class because the teacher Ryan, Maryellen explains it very well. For the exams, you have to prepare well so that you can pass the exams. The tasks are a little easy and difficult because have graphs. Teacher Ryan, Maryellen is a very good teacher, I recommend her class.
I took Prof. Ryan's Zoom class, and loved it! She was very reachable outside of class and answered any questions quickly. Provides a great study guide, and points out important concepts and specifics for test questions during class. Gives good partial credit for short answer problems on exams, very clearly cares about students and their learning.
I took her 6 week summer course, she was very flexible and reachable. I recommend her, there were 3 tests that make up 50% of your grade and quizzes, assignments, and attendance make up the other 50%. Everything was open note, please take her!!!
Did the seven-week class, so lots of work in general, but also A LOT of writing in discussion boards.
Professor Ryan makes econ a bit easier. Prepare well for tests, but her classes and office hours are super helpful. Definitely use unstuck AI alongside the textbook - it made study prep a breeze. I'd recommend this course if you're willing to put in the work.
Sweet professor but workload is very heavy and exams are extremely difficult + lockdown browser with mic and webcam required. She's very quick in explaining her lectures and no room for any questions you might have. If you are not familiar with economics, I do not recommend her class at all.
Professor Maryellen Ryan is really nice, but if you haven't taken ECO 201, you might struggle to follow along she jumps right into the content. I had issues where I'd submit assignments early and they'd still show as late, which was annoying, but she fixed it fast. She uses real world examples, which makes the class more interesting.
I took her 6-week Econ202 summer course. She is very nice, and as long as you do the work, you'll pass. The grading layout consisted of 3 unit tests (lock-down browser, but it's all open note - usually a total of 25 questions; 20 multiple choice and 5 free response), which make up 50% of your grade, and the other 50% is assignments and attendance.
