She is nice enough, but her class can get dull and you miss the important stuff.
very confusing in presenting very basic material, jumps around a lot, but really easy tests and quizzes.
goes straight from the book. Tests aren't too bad, but needs to work on her style a lot.
Very nice prof. Helpful if you need to ask questions. Well-organized lectures. Lets you bring in a 5x7 sheet to every test (as if the tests weren't easy enough to begin with) and an 8x10 to the final.
very nice prof., easy class
Ridiculously easy. Possibly the easiest class ever. I felt like I was in remedial trig. I would take this class every semester if I could.
Two things: Test grades 98 and 100. and i am no math whiz. she gets nervous very nice, accomodating. just read the text and you'll do fine. laugh at her weak jokes because when she sees that nobody is laughing she feels like an idiot..wouldn't you?
really nice and gets to know her students, can be a little spacey in class, but very helpful if you go to office hours
Very easy course, the tests and quizzes are all more than doable for anyone, no matter what your math skill level is. Don't slack off at the end and skip classes like I did, though; it'll turn an easy A into a B-.
She's a good teacher. Not always clear but she is very helpful outside of class. Material is easy and she lets you know what kinds of things will be on tests. Just do HW and this class is cake.
if you got Cs in high school math, take this class. if you do even half the homework assigned, you'll ace the quizzes, and she is so liberal with the test weighting that you can miss one and it won't affect your grade.
Such a sweet, helpful professor -- she took us through our work step-by-step to make sure we all understood what was going on. Easy tests, but the final was harder than the rest.
She is sooo very nice. Really wants her students to do well. Does not make you feel stupid if you have a question. One of my favorite professors. If you want an easy A and a nice, non jerky, non arrogant teacher, take one of her classes!
She's one of the nicest professors @WM.Her classes are easy & if u have a question she's more than willing to help. She's accomodating & if u think that a test answer should be different, she'll actually listen to your reasoning & try to work w/ u.
Well she's certainly the nicest math prof I've ever had and the class is easy.
Professor Zapf is not tough. She assigns alot of homework for her stats class. Homework is not too easy but you need to do it to do well on the quizzes. Her test are a breeze of you do the homework. Working hard=A, slacking off a bit= B+, no work = C
Her class is not very hard, but she gives obscene amounts of homework. If you can do the homework, then you will do well in the tests though.
Lots of homework, but pretty easy course, and she's a neat lady. Very nice and willing to help students, clear lectures, overall good.
She'll go out of her way to help you.
Easy class if you do homework. You can work in groups so it is easy. HW quizzes 25% grade. Her tests are more like the quizzes than HW. She likes tricky multiple choice true/f but she is a really nice lady.
I LOVE MARYLOU. i absolutely hate math. she is willing to help and hang out outside of her regular hours. she is such an awesome human being. i suck at math....but marylou rocks at life.
This class isn't too difficult. If you do you're homework then you're fine. Prof Zapf is sooo nice and is very willing to help you if you ask.
Intro course and I enjoyed it despite total lack of interest in math. She's easygoing and approachable, really clear lectures and is very helpful. Emphasizes concepts rather than formulas, so you actually learn what you're doing and why. Plus she's soo nice. Great class for GER 1!
The nicest teacher i've had yet. Very helpful. Good easy class
good easy class to take, do the homework and you'll do fine on the quiz and tests, very straighforward, an approachable and helpful teacher
This class was easy, but extreemly boring to sit through. Gives lots of extra credit towards the final exam, and if you do your homework and read the book, you are practically guaranteed an A. a good class to take to get the math GER out of the way.
Class was not too boring, and very easy. She gives plenty of extra credit, and drops two homeworks and quizes.
This class was really easy and I had an A before the final which was the hardest test i've ever taken and it dropped me to a C+ and I studied 13 hours for it
she is one of the nicest teachers i've had. her class is easy and she makes it relatively simple. if you read the book, the hw is easy, and if you do the hw you'll be prepared for the tests for the most part.
calculus is calculus, but mary lou is awesome! she's really nice, and very helpful! plus she drops two quizzes! final was atrocious tho, mostly because she didn't write it. quite possibly the nicest teacher on campus, take her if at all possible!!!
I've had her twice, shes extremely nice, but she fails to be a good teacher and she isn't good at teaching the class.
Very nice, but class is pretty boring and despite having lots of powerpoints, the material doesn't come accross very concise. She follows the book pretty closely, so it's ok to skip class. Read the chapter, do the homework, you'll be fine.
Zapf explains things rather clearly, and a nice gal to boot, but unless you are a stats or math major, or really love math, this is a bit absurd as a GER. This is math that a history or english major will never do outside this class and yet, because of the nature of the testing, you have to know the stuff inside and out to get an A or B.
Pretty easy teacher, makes good outlines for class.
i really liked her a lot. i think she is one of the best math teachers i've ever had. i personally thought the class was easy if you do the homework and pay attention in class, but of course most people don't do that. and i agree, you shouldn't take the class if you're looking for the ger. you should take power of flight instead.
Class is boring, and she doesn't explain things very well, but, with a little work, I had a high B until the final exam, which was cumulative, so I studied a lot.I still failed, as did everyone else I talked to.It brought my grade down to a C.The class seems easy, but the final is killer.
she gives outlines at the beginnig of class that say everything she is going to say and you kinf of fill in the blanks....it would be more helpful to take your own notes. Sometimes tests are hard and cover alot of material....esp. when you have other midterms to study for...i hear she is good as a stats teacher....she hasnt taught 111 for a while
Zapf is only willing to help you if you are doing well in the class, if not, she figures you to be a lost cause and repeatedly will ask you to drop the class. This is a difficult class if you are not good at math; do not take just for a GER. Take your own notes and do the problems in the book. Class is very very boring.
This class was very easy but was so boring that it was almost not worth the easy A. She's not that good at explaining material or questions and focuses too much on very easy concepts.
Teaches the material in an incredibly fast paced manner! Tests are much much more difficult than any other Math 111 class. If calc is not your piece of cake and you havent had AP or IB, then you need to find a private tutor or attend the free tuturing sessions. DO THE HOMEWORK! Do some problems everyday. You will learn alot.
Straightforward, easy teacher. Notes are online. Print them out before you go and take notes on them. If you are confident in math, it def. won't hurt to skip a few classes. She's always really nice and will answer any questions you may have.
Very nice prof. Not as easy as everyone says--work is definitely required to do well. Some of the tests are tricky with a lot of conceptual questions. Final was easier than the rest of the tests, and weekly quizzes prevent you from falling behind. If I had to do it all over again, I would still take it with her. Good class overall.
Study study study! Don't get behind and you'll be fine...
Very easy and very non-math at times. Lots of conceptual problems. Weekly quizzes are fairly easy and tests are managable. Good class, Prof. Zapf is helpful and understanding, she's a nice lady.
Probably one of the best lectures in the math department. This isn’t an easy class but any difficulty comes from the material and not the professor.
i'll give her straight 4's on the rating, but i felt i knew the material well enough for an A or A- and ended up with a B+. homework and quizzes should help your grade, and there are no surprises in there. she knows her stuff, but sometimes i felt i deserved more partial credit. the class average on the final i think is the lowest i have seen here so far.
Not helpful at all. She is very spacey, would often go over test problems and do the entire thing wrong and notice at the last step. Take with another professor.
This class is pretty easy. attendance mandatory. You have to be dedicated inorder to get an A+ or an A-. there are about 10 quizzes one every wednesday.she drops 2 quizzes and she never cancels class. 3 midterms that are easy if you study but the final is TERRIBLE! just do the homework and study and you should be fine. she really is a nice lady..
Boooring, but easy. Hey, it's stats. I was fasinated by her coordinating hairbows, though.
If you can avoid calculus, AVOID IT! The whole dept. Major problems from tutoring system, but loved TA. Labs were frustrating. The content is very difficult (it's not like high school calculus) & exams were impossible. Take it at a community college over the summer if it's a prerequisite. Professor talked to board & was unclear. VERY nice though.
This was the WORST class I have EVER TAKEN. She has no idea what she is talking about. She will send an email after each class (poorly) explaining what formula she got wrong and what problems she didn't solve correctly. She can't answer questions, and really showed no grasp of the material she was trying to teach.
Professor Zapf is extremely helpful and nice. She is very teaching oriented and focuses on those who may not understand the concepts as well. She holds study sessions outside of class and grades fairly. I am not a math person, but I had no problem understanding her class. Take Zapf!
Lectures are boring (it's math after all); it's not necessary to come to class as long as you keep up with the assigned book problems. Quizzes and tests are straightforward, though the final exam is surprisingly hard in comparison to the rest of the class. Still, professor Zapf is nice and a fair grader; overall, I would recommend her for math 111.
Professor Zapf is SO nice. She's a really clear professor, and I think she's what all WM professors should be like. This class isn't that hard at all, but towards the middle of the semester when things begin to get difficult, she starts going really fast. She's good about helping outside class though.
Horrid, DO NOT TAKE She teaches straight off of a sheet and cant even get it right when she is doing that. Her tests are impossible and it is geared towards math majors even though it is an intro class. I took AP Calc and got a 4 on the test as did others in the class, yet test averages were in the 60's and some of us AP students got 60s and 70s
Don't listen to the other comments - if you go to class you will do well. If you don't go to class you won't do well. Do all of the homework problems (there aren't that many) and go over all notes before quizzes/tests and you will do fine!
Z's class isn't as hard as everyone makes it out to be. You need to have some basic knowledge from pre-calc, but she also has tools readily available if you need more help. Her notes and tests are really straight forward so if you don't get the material, you aren't putting in enough time studying. I highly recommend her class!
Crystal clear professor. She tells you exactly what she wants. I love her lecture outlines as well. Tests are adequately difficult for a Calculus class, but nothing outrageous.
Not very hard at all. If you do the problems in the book and write down the problems that she does in class, you should do well. The labs are basically follow the directions. The tests are pretty straightforward. The quizzes are really the hard part and they are not that bad.
Prof. Zapf is an amazing prof. She definitely knows her material and never makes a student feel stupid for asking a question in class. Her answers to questions definitely help. Wish I could take her Calc II class
Zapf is a very good calc teacher. She was very nice and open to questions. More importantly she teaches to the class, not the board, and pauses often to make sure everyone is on the same page. Would definitely recommend.
She is a great professor! I would say one of the best I have/have had. She is very clear. The work is doable, but make sure you stay on top of it. EXTREMELY helpful and nice woman i would without a doubt highly recommend
Rushes through material, wants you to work out problems her and hey way only, hard quizzes, average test and labs, avoid her class
Calculus 1 with Professor Zapf is rather difficult, but she is a great teacher. She rushes through the material, but that is because there is so much material to cover that she has to. She is always available during office hours, though. Definitely do the homework and don't wait until the night before to do the work. She is hard, but fair.
She is clear, teaches to the class, and is very helpful. Does rush through material it seems like (hard to follow at times) but I am learning a lot. Pretty Difficult must stay on top of the work.
I opted to take this class at 8 am because I heard the other professors for calculus were terrible, and I was right. She is THE professor for Calc 1. She has really great lecture outlines which make following along really easy. Work hard and come to class, and you will do well. Love her, she's so fair. Would 100% recommend to anyone taking Calc 1
class was WAY to hard, no curve, final was ridiculous, AVOID
Tough grader, not as good as everyone is saying. If you don't do it her way she takes a lot of points off. Instead of helping by providing easier explanations, she goes off on a harder way to do the problem/answer question. Did not like this class.
Attend class! Her notes and outlines are very helpful and you don't really need the textbook except for practice. Labs are an easy grade booster, so work hard on those. There are also weekly quizzes which are relatively easy if you study for them.
Average for class was a D. No hope in this class. Stay Away!
Prof. Zapf is great! She'll be my major advisor starting in the fall. Her lecture outlines are great, and she's very accessible and helpful during office hours. Everything hard about the class isn't her fault- the labs (occasionally incomprehensible) and the final (difficult) are both overseen by the department. Quizzes are easy. Highly recommend!
She can seem somewhat detached from students and her lectures are not always that interesting, but her lecture outlines are incredibly helpful and she is very straightforward. Weekly quizzes are manageable as long as you do some practice problems. Very easy for the math inclined and manageable for the rest of us.
Way too much of a focus on algebra. Quizzes and Tests were impossible. Much, much harder than other Calc 1 professors.
Zapf is one of the nicest teachers I've ever had, but she is also one of the hardest. Her class was a lot of work, but it was for a good reason. The math dep. final is notoriously hard, and her tests and quizzes really prepared me. My best advice is to do ALL the homework problems.
Prof. Zapf is great! Her lecture outlines are so helpful and the tests and quizzes are easy as long as you do the recommended book problems. SO helpful and SO nice! I was looking for a TA but couldn't find any of them so I just walked into her office outside office hours and she put down what she was doing to help me.
Prof Zapf was very challenging. Class was not super interesting. If you want to do well, I recommend working really hard, going to class everyday, sitting in the front row, and asking questions. Even this might not be enough. Her tests do not often correlate with what was learned in class and what was on the quizzes. This being said, she is nice.
I'm no good in math which is probably why I did poorly. She is a good professor, explains material well, however, she is very hard. She makes sure you know the material well. Unless you're good at math, you'll have to study a lot and do a lot of practice problems. Her quizzes require you to do the homework to do well, so KEEP Up with the work
Professor Zapf's class is very tough. She grades strictly and is tough with partial credit. That being said she is also very consistent with her grading. Study hard for tests using textbook problems and the practice exams she posts. Problems on tests are generally tricky and very difficult.
Very clear and thorough, great lecturer. Easy to follow, and she made classes enjoyable. Exams were relatively easy with some tricky questions here and there.
This was a hard class. I did not take calculus in high school. She's a lovely teacher and is very thorough. However, its also hard to keep up with the material. Homework is not mandatory, but recommended. She gives plenty of quizzes, and if you study for them they can boost your grade a bit. Exams are torture, but she drops one. final was brutal!
I did not take Calculus in high school and I was not strong in math so that is why i think it was more difficult than it was suppose to be. I honestly liked the professor because she was helpful and very understanding (curved my grade...praise God) but still the work was hard. i would suggest taking calculus in high school before taking this class.
Professor Zapf is such a great professor. She is always willing to help students during and outside of her office hours and genuinely wants you to succeed. Her lectures are very helpful in understanding the material, especially since she gives out lecture outlines to help you. As long as you attend class and skim the review problems, you'll be ok
Professor Zapf is a wonderful professor! She makes you work for your grades, but as long as you go to class, do the homework on your own, and study hard for the tests, you'll be fine. She's super helpful during her office hours and she genuinely wants to help you succeed. You can definitely tell she's enthusiastic about her field.
Good lecturer, fair grader, always eager to help. She writes more rapidly than an M249 light machine gun fires 5.56 rounds, which is great for students who want exposure to a lot of useful material, bad for those looking to check a box, and calamitous for wrists made of anything softer than iron.
I took Calculus BC in High School, so I thought this class would be a breeze. Beware. College Calculus courses are difficult and are on a different level. Zapf is a great teacher, but her exams are challenging. Do all the HW problems in the book and seek help. Final was very hard. Hey, you can do it though!
She mentions specifically that she won't give curve, and she is a tough grader. But in general she's awesome.
I took Calc 2 with Zapf and am going to take multi with her next semester. She always puts her lecture outlines on Bboard, works through examples in class that are relevant, and assigns homework that relates to the class and HW problems come up on the test often. Since it's calc2 you're gonna have to work for an A but she makes it fair and square
To be fair, math is not my forte. But although Zapf is a fairly nice person, and helpful in office hours, I feel that the course itself has a lot of problems. She refuses to curve, she waits until last minute to write our labs, and she skips too many steps when doing problems. Fairly difficult, especially if you didn't take calc in high school.
Prof Zapf is very clear. Although some people complain that she goes over things too fast, I was okay with it. Attend classes, do the homework, MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING, DO THE PRACTICE TESTS because they look VERY SIMILAR to the actual tests. Then this course shouldn't be hard for you. Midterms and final are harder than quizzes
Professor Zapf is extremely clear with respect to what she expects you to know for all quizzes and tests. She posts ample practice problems and practice tests and will help you learn from your mistakes. There is no ambiguity with respect to expectations or grading. All you have to do is put in the work and you will do great!
Zapf is probably the clearest math lecturer here. She puts lecture outlines on Blackboard that you can print out and fill with her class lectures, so there's no ambiguity about the content you need to know. The class is multivar, so it's hard, but as long as you do the textbook hw, you should be fine.
Professor Zapf was awesome! Her lectures are very clear and engaging and she is very willing to help you outside of class as well.
If you took Calc I in high school, you're set for an A. If this is your first time taking calc, it's still really manageable. Print her lecture outlines and come to class. She is super sweet although lecture can be a bit boring, but tests and quizzes reflect everything done in class and she is super fair.
Zapf makes concepts easy to understand & is helpful when people have questions (in class & during office hours). She also has clear expectations for what we should know for exams & is very fair when it comes to grading. Work load is a little less than BC calc. You have to do the homework and attend class to pass, though.
I chose to take MATH 213 purely as an elective. I hadn't taken a math course since high school, and was looking to brush up on my math for fun. Being surrounded by physics and math majors, I felt out of place at first; however, Zapf's innate capacity for teaching made me feel right at home. If you do the homework and take notes, you'll be fine.
The best prof. in Math dept!!
Took this class over summer session 1, she does a great job of explaining content that will be tested, and if you do the homework the tests will be pretty easy. If you are ok/good at math this will seem like a cake walk. A lot of content/formulas to remember/apply in a short amount of time, so be wary of the class if math doesn't come well to you
Literally she is the worst prof I have had during my time at W&M. she talks SO FAST and will not slow down at all. you miss most of the notes because when she is done writing its too bad if you didnt catch what she said. her tests are really hard and the class is definitely struggling. DO NOT TAKE CALC WITH HER!! YOU WILL THANK ME
really solid professor. she's not harsh, but the class is not easy by any mean. very clear on what is expected on tests and quizzes, labs and quizzes are a grade boost so study for quizzes and do the labs. the exams are not unreasonably hard, but prepare to study. lecture outlines are posted on BB and she grades fairly. no curve though
Professor Zapf teaches a few subjects differently then what I remembered from high school. Personally, I had a difficult time understanding her grading system. I stuck to some methods from high school (because it was easier) but she would deduct points even though I got the same correct answer. Quizzes and Tests were either a hit or a big miss.
You REALLY have to work your hardest to perform well in the class. Her lecture outlines are somewhat clear, but there are some confusing aspects. She takes off a lot of points for the most minor mistakes, which is annoying. The quizzes vary in terms of difficulty, but exams are pretty difficult. Final exam wasn't that bad though.
Super nice and well organized
Professor Zapf makes clear what she expects of you, but pay attention because she moves very fast. Her lectures were sometimes difficult to understand but I've heard other professors are much worse and that she is the best at teaching calc. Not an easy class, you have to put in time studying. I went to tutoring weekly to better understand material.
Zapf was a decent professor who always thoroughly explained the concepts and examples she taught. It was hard to get through her class without falling asleep because she would lecture the whole time but if you can pay attention for the whole lecture and you do the homework you're set for understanding the concepts and getting an A.
Professor Zapf clearly explains all the concepts, and she is very kind and readily accessible outside class. The class itself was not too difficult, and it was definitely my favorite math class so far at William & Mary.
Professor Zapf is really nice and her exams aren't too bad. Her lectures are pretty boring and too long (often irrelevant to the materials on the exams/quizzes). Not the best prof ever but she's one of the better professor who's teaching this class.
I took Prof Zapf for two semesters. I got a C for the first semester and barely passed the second. Her lectures are confusing, and she's a hard grader.
about to go into my third semester of calc with prof zapf- and i think that speaks for itself. she's super clear on the grading (tells you what steps have points attached to them, etc) and the outlines are really well organized. calc 2 is hard, but she tries to make it easier to swallow. not the best prof ever, but by no means a bad one.
Probably one of my favorite math teachers. I took this online over the summer, and her course did a fantastic job of balancing lessons, homework and testing to ensure a student had opportunities to understand and grasp all concepts. Her lectures were easy to follow, and when something didn't click, she took time to work through topics with me.
Not a bad teacher, but she put an exam on election day so I lost a lot of respect for the math department for that.
Honestly coming from BC, this class is a joke. We don't have polars/parametrics, making the pacing slow. But I haven't learned anything. I'm not sure if this is a result of everything being online, but she's been teaching it in a way that emphasizes memorization over knowledge. Having tests at 8am doesn't help
I found this class very satisfying, but that might just be my opinion towards the subject. Lots of quizzes, but I found that helpful in reinforcing my knowledge (if not my grade). Lectures were pre-recorded and VERY long, but understandable given shrunken semester. Amount of homework was unbalanced week to week, though. I liked the notes style.
Professor Zapf was a pretty good choice for multivariable. She taught things very clearly and, although she sometimes made errors when solving problems or writing notes, she still knows her stuff. She was very forgiving when grading, but she doesn't curve at all so make sure to do the optional homework and practice problems and you'll do fine.
All the lectures were pre recorded and posted on blackboard, but she wouldn't always post them soon enough. One time, I had to watch 3 lectures in a weekend before the weekly quiz. The homework was a lot harder than the quizzes or tests. Labs were pretty easy.
Compared to Avioli for Calc 1, Zapf is a godsend. Her notes outlines and lecture videos for each chapter section are super clear and easy to follow. There are weekly quizzes, but she uses the class the day before the quiz to review, and will sometimes omit quiz problems if students are having trouble with a certain concept on review day.
Zapf was a good professor for my Calc 2 class. I had already taken Calc BC in high school but the class was good preparation for multivariable this semester. If you do the homework and study the tests are fairly easy from my experience. During Covid she did prerecorded lectures and we met for a problem set once a week. That wasn't ideal.
Calc is hard at w&m but prof Zapf is probably one of the better profs to take it with. She does a lot of applied concepts and practice problems in class, enough that you don't have to do the optional homework. She also gives out labs and has weekly quizzes so your grade doesn't rely entirely on 4 tests (one of which she drops).
Excellent professor, taught the course material in a very accessible manner. Very kind and likable.
This class was moved online for the semester, at which point it went effectively asynchronous. There is a massive jump from quizzes and labs (which are very toughly graded, no wrong-but-consistent) to exams. I do not feel as though the prof. puts forward effort and might as well take my class from Khan Academy.
I'd heard that calc 2 was a beast at WM but with Prof. Zapf it wasn't too bad. The quizzes were straight from the lecture notes so as long as you followed along and could do the examples she went over, you were all set. The tests weren't too bad at all. You did have to study a good bit every week for the weekly quizzes and do the labs.
Very straightforward, constantly kept moving through the material but at least had a constant pace. Need to show up and pay attention the whole time or else you might fall behind. Got me through Calculus 2 in one piece and that's all I could ask for honestly.
Calc 1 in college is... much harder than high school. That being said, Professor Zapf is a very kind and intelligent professor. She goes over a ton of practice problems in class, and despite the course being very dense with information, she paces it well.
Zapf is wonderful. She is clear in her lectures and will do anything in her power to help you succeed. She is quite literally the GOAT in the Math department at W&M.
Zapf is a clear, by-the-book professor. Calc I is intense, but you can get through it if you pay attention and do the suggested hw. I like that she had lecture outlines available and always gave partial credit. She was available after class since regular office hours didn't work for me, and I appreciated that. Final was brutal, though.
Professor Zapf's lectures are exhausting, but the 2 hour long class isn't helping her. She doesn't stop to take questions. You will have to interrupt her. The uses outlines for her notes, and you will be expected to print them out. Only quizzes and tests for your grade. I find her lectures incredibly boring, but thankfully she posts recordings.
Zapf gives a good amount of resources which make it easier to study. Do all of the practice problems and memorize specific details that she gives, you will need to know them.
Basically your average high school math teacher. Doesn't do a great job answering questions in class, so I recommend going to her office hours. Sometimes goes way too fast to grasp the material and also makes a ton of arithmetic errors during lectures which can get pretty distracting. Quizzes and tests are typically much easier than the homework.
She gives a good amount of resources, and recorded versions of all lectures are available. However you have to memorize the very specific details and tricks that she goes over in the lectures since you will need to know them for quizzes/tests.
She's a great teacher. Do the practice problems if you want to succeed.
Very stressful summer class. If you have anything else on your plate, do not take this class. It takes up all of your time and the tests are only a random 9 questions..high stakes. Beware.
Very time-consuming, and the 2 midterm tests and final count for an extreme amount of the grade. However, the information is presented really well in the video lectures. Wouldn't recommend taking another summer class with this as it's a lot of formulas to memorize in a short period of time.
Calculus is not an easy topic but professor Zapf does a good job of explaining everything clearly and is very accessible for help outside of class. She is definitely a good math professor for a challenging topic.
Calc is definitely a difficult class, especially if you are taking it for the first time, and I definitely saw people in other classes struggling more than we were in Zapf's class. She is also so sweet and got us all candy for valentines day
This class is hard, but doable. Go to all lectures, ask questions when you have them. Make sure to do all the homework from the textbook because sometimes she puts similar questions on the quizzes even if you didn't go over it in class. If you practice and ask the calc tutors the questions you have, you will be fine.
Somehow all over the place when explaining concepts and solving problems. She is not sharp anymore given the age.
dont commit to zapf
Zapf is a solid math professor. The lectures provide helpful resources, and the grading focuses on quizzes and tests rather than just exams. Using unstuck AI alongside the course materials can really improve your understanding.
Her lectures are very fast paced, but that's because there's A LOT of content to cover over the semester. I went to a few of her office hours for extra help, and she always seemed condescending(?) Although, her TA was awesome. There are definitely better professors for MATH 111. Avoid Zapf if possible.
Professor Zapf moves really quickly through really tough topics, and the lectures are more or less watching her solve the problems while doing them alongside her. This style didn't really work for me personally. However, she had office hours 3 times a week so it was very easy to go ask her questions.
Amazing professor! Her lectures are clear and understandable. She wants her students to succeed and is very helpful! Attendance is not mandatory, but if you show up to the lectures you will understand the content far better. In her lectures, she is clear about what she expects on tests and quizzes. Highly recommend her as a calc professor!
Zapf explains things decently well and will answer your questions in class. The tests can be slightly difficult, but if you prep it shouldnt be too bad.
shes extremely organized and her lectures were always very clear. the midterms and final were also straightforward, and she lets you know what to expect. one of my favorite profs ive had so far.
You'll fail if you miss class. I found the weekly quizzes to be really hard and that is where my grade suffered the most. This class is not a walk in the park, she goes through the material really fast, and a lot of the time the examples were nothing like the homework or quiz/test questions. Only take this class if you NEED it for your major.
She's an amazing professor! Definitely come to class if you want to do well. She outlines the tests and quizzes all the time so you'll know what's coming. Her tests aren't too hard but definitely ask questions and practice outside of class.
Zapf is a good professor but lowkey condescending. The course is hard because a new module is taught basically every class. I found going to the TAs was helpful.
She is a very straightforward professor who genuinely wants all her students to do well, but it is a tough subject. Attending lectures and completing the homework are both very important. If you do both, you can be successful in this class. She holds office hours and will go over practice problems where students are struggling. Study efficiently.
The course is inherently hard and you put in a lot of work, but Zapf is a pretty good teacher. I had a great TA which helped a lot bc both have tutoring hours I went to frequently. Lots of optional hw but grade was made up of 10 weekly quizzes (2 lowest dropped),11 labs, & 3 exams + final. I didn't love this class but I would take it w Zapf again
Professor Zapf is the best math teacher I've ever had. She gives a ton of opportunities for feedback and practice. Every test is preceded by in class practice and practice tests, she posts every test after with explanations. She gives you fully filled out notes outlines. If you come to class and put in decent effort outside of class, you're fine.
The way calc is set up at W&M is brutal, but Prof Zapf is an angel. The course is well organized and she provides ample practice opportunities. Tough class as someone with no calc/trig background, but she made it so much more bearable.
Weekly quizzes and labs that are pretty easy. Her lectures are very clear and she provides note outlines. Class was easy for me and I've taken calc before, but did super bad the first time.
I took ap calc ab in highschool (3 on exam) so I thought this class wasn't going to be hard but omg. Quizes every thursday, we learned things that we never covered in ab. I feel like she's a tough grader and would be nit picky and take points off even if I got the right answer because I didn't do it her way. Other prof is better, but zapf is fine.
your average math class. effective teacher, pretty good with partial credit. lectures were boring but again: your average math class. very stylish.
Prof. Zapf is literally a sweetie pie. I have never taken calc before and was lowkey really confused the entirety of our lectures. However, she will go step by step with you if you GO TO OFFICE HOURS. I literally went every Wednesday to prep for the Thursday quizzes (which are weekly). She is more than willing to help, but be proactive.
Prof Zapf is very knowledgable and her slower teaching pace makes it very easy to understand concepts. Completed note outlines are posted online after every class, and homework and exams are very reasonable. Definitely very easy to succeed in this class, especially if you have prior knowledge in statistics.
