Awesome teacher! Very passionate about her subject. Changed my perspective on so many things and made me see the world through the sociological lenses. Funny and interesting. Would love to take some more soc classes with her.
Crazy-fun teacher! Have had a blast so far listening to her lectures. Tests are fairly easy if you attend class and do a small amount of studying. She really wants to engage her students and give them the love for sociology that she has. Mention anything Polish that you know! haha
She was wonderful! I always looked forward to attending her class. She's not huge on homework and makes sure to cover everything that will be on the tests no surprises. I would gladly recommend her any day!
Very engaging, and fun. Class participation is necessary if you're going to make the most of the class. Highly recommended.
This class had its moments of fun, learning different part of sociology but some of it was also a little on the dry side. All in all an easy A class
The class I took was late start so it was harder than normal but she's a pretty good teacher. If you get her, I doubt you'll have problems.
Just took her class and even though I wasn't interested in sociology initially but she quickly changed it. She's really engaging and loves what she does! The semester flew by crazy fast (it was a summer course though) and I would love to take more classes with Mrs. Navarro!
She is excellent! Engaging, funny, and thought-provoking in her lectures. Participation matters, guys, speak up! She respects every last word that comes out of your mouth. You definitely want to read the chapters, though - she will know by responses if you don't and you won't pass the online quizzes. The book is interesting and well-written though.
Took sociology mostly for my own benefit, but this teacher made it a great class. She is funny. Participation is very important so you'll want to speak up even a little and it will go far. The tests are online and not difficult if you actually read the chapter first.
Fantastic teacher. Does the lecture, gives study guides for the chapter tests, makes the class fun, doesn't make class boring, very upbeat.
I really really enjoyed this class. If you could possibly fit SOC101 into your degree, I without a doubt would. It was a joy to attend class and I really learned a lot about the nature of social interaction and stuff like race, gender, and culture in general. Highly recommend this class, especially with this professor. Try to participate every day!
Best professor I've had. Cares about students success. Class is fun, informational, and interesting!
Best Instructor i have had so far. She makes the class so much enjoyable. One class i did not want to skip, as it was always fun a interesting.
Online course! Great teacher.
Literally a great teacher, class was always full of participation and great lecture as she is very funny. Passionate about sociology and is very well qualified as she knows everything needed to teach the course.
This professor was wonderful. The online SOC101 course was very interesting and MGN's recorded lectures were always funny and fun to watch. I would recommend this class to anyone who would like a closer looking at society and using a sociological perspective to view different subjects that impact the world. EXCELLENT TEACHER!!
Quizlet helps through the first part of the class for sure. You MUST READ THE CHAPTERS still if you want to pass! Her grading scale is 90-100 is an A, she doesn't do minus grades (Ex: B-). She responds back to you within a reasonable amount of time if you have questions. I would definitely recommend her for this class.
She's so entertaining and class is never boring. Exams(which are like 3) are hard, but quizzes each week are not. Especially since she already has the outline of each chapter filled out already online!
MGN is an AMAZING professor. She is sassy (a very good sassy), caring and hilarious. This class is very interesting and gets you thinking about things you may not have considered. There are weekly quizzes, exams and a few papers with a ton of opportunities for extra credit. This class is non-traditionally structured as it is very interactive.
Ms. Giren-Navarro is great! I took a fast-paced Soc 101 course, and she made her syllabus clear and I really learned a lot. She also responds to email RIGHT AWAY, which is so rare but much appreciated! Thanks Ms. Giren-Navarro! :)
Great class! I would take it again.
Great professor! Fun class! Definitely recommend it!
Took human sexuality with her and loved it! She's very open minded and makes her students feel very comfortable discussing issues pertaining to very sensitive topics. Lectures were relying on students participation and input. Learned a lot, and already enrolled in her soc 101 next semester. Highly recommend her classes! Oh, and she's hilarious :)
Professor Giren-Navarro is awesome. Took Human Sexuality and she really got students comfortable with discussing sensitive topics in a respectful way. Super minimal work outside of class. She's a fun lecturer and really gets to know her students.
She expects things from you that aren't listed in the instructions then gives you a poor grade for not completing them "to her standards". She thinks you should've answered a question in a different way but doesn't elaborate on and fails you for that. Her tests make no sense. Her discussions are hard and confusing. She doesn't help explain grading.
Best online class I have taken so far. MGN is super carrying, provides great feedback, and her assignments actually help understanding the material. Couldn't believe how fast she responded to my emails too!! I met with her at the beginning of the semester, and it was very helpful in terms of understanding what her expectations were.
MGN is the only Sociology teacher to take. Her class is easy, fun, and educational. You learn things you never thought were important. If I get the chance I'm enrolling in her PS130 class. Great teacher who actually cares for her students and gets to know them.
Awesome class I learned quite a bit from her. Very interesting content would definitely recommend !
Best professor at TMCC, hands down. I suggest her SOC 101 and PSY 130 class. If you fail her courses, it because you failed yourself.
This class was amazing!! I highly recommend. She is a great professor and lectures extremely well. Also attendance is mandatory since it counts towards participation and the overall grade. Some tests can be difficult but reading the book and attending the lectures help tremendously. Also ask to repeat things that she says is important to know!!
OMG what a cool class and an awsome prof! She was very relatable, and always carying about my progress. Provided me with so much feedback, I can't think of another instructor who did this much.! I learned a lot and would definitely recommend to take soc with her!
Super easy class as long as you put the work in. I took it during a summer semester and still managed to get a 96%. The only reason you could have for failing this class is by not putting the small amount of work it requires in.
Best Professor EVER!! she gives very useful comments and she cares about her students; besides that she makes the class easy by making discussions fun and based on our point of view. she is always respectful of others opinion. i would advice everyone to take this class. GREAT CLASS!
Never ever have I had a professor who cared about me and my success more than MGN. Her class was great and she constantly tried engaging us outside of the "virtual classroom" - I attended a movie festival with her and went to one of her presentations (which was SO COOL!!!!!). I had a bit of a crisis mid semester, and she helped me go through it.
MGN is the best professor I've had yet! She cares about her students and makes it easy to learn. She doesn't believe in lecturing with just power point presentations and makes you WANT to participate. MGN is a professor that makes it easy to pass. If you are at all interested in learning about Human Sexuality I 100% recommend you take her class!
Incredibly tough grader. I have a feeling she didn't like me either. Class discussions require a lot of personal information.
I have taken both her SOC101 and her PSY130 courses and she is hands down the best teacher I've had at TMCC so far. She is engaging and finds ways to make personal matters fun and interesting. Her class is pretty easy, just weekly reading and quizzes online, a couple short essays and tests. I highly recommend both courses.
I am in her class right now and look forward to each lecture!!!!! She inspires me to think abut the material outside of the class and she genuinly cares about her students and their lives. I feel like I can talk to her about anything and I have already learned so many important things
I don't doubt she's a great professor but she expects you to purchase books and access codes that cost as much as the class itself for a basic 100 level course.
Amazing professor! Class is well structured. Just read the chapters and the assignments are more than easy to get done. Took this class over summer session and was able to keep up with this class and another class at the same time. Just put in the usual work and learn knew things along the way!
I took this class as a winter semester, so it was pretty intense. Only had 3 weeks of the class, so you had to keep up with everything. We had a lot of assignments due each week, which is understandable. She posted videos of her talking about the subjects we were learning for people who did want to read the slides on their own.
Navarro is very funny and really is to work with! She makes sure you're doing okay and always checks in if you need help. Her big tests are a little difficult if you don't study but otherwise her class is easy to flow through. Do be prepared to be called on and talk in front of the class every now and then.
Honestly I don't understand the negative reviews. She's by far the best professor I've ever had. She makes class so engaging and I always look forward to class. Everything is pretty easy. Just read a chapter once a week, take a test. Do like 2 papers & discussions which are easy. Exams are a bit hard though if you can't remember everything
Sociology is a wonderfully exciting class, especially with the most intelligent, positive, captivating teacher Marynia Giren Navarro.
One of the greatest teachers I have ever had! Fun class, very easy to understand if you listen, and overall just a great time!
Participation matters in this class and be sure to take notes in every lecture. She does have a lot of extra credit opportunities! Makes the lectures interesting and shes really funny!! You can really tell she cares about all her students.
Professor MGN is absolutely amazing and it was one of my favorite classes. She wants everyone to participate in class discussions/lectures, but she understands if you're not the type to talk during class. There are reading assignments and quizzes weekly on Revel, but they're fast and easy. Lectures are also fun and I would definitely recommend!
Her online Sociology class was nothing short of amazing! MGN is clearly passionate about Sociology and she gives wonderful feedback for writing assignments so you can fully understand the chapters. I would highly recommend taking one of her courses.
The book was not used just needed the code for Pearson. Had to refer to syllabus as lot and message professor a lot to get clarification on what was needed. Syllabus was not completely clear and takes a lot time to grade work. Grades differently than canvas does so grade might not match up.
Professor Navarro was such a great teacher. I took her class in the winter and though you do have to read a lot it helps you at the end and makes discussions much easier. For the winter course, we had to do 9 out of 13 discussions, 2 essays, two 50 question exams, and 2 open-ended exams. She was so helpful always gave great feedback.
I took this as a winter course and it was very enjoyable. Most of the work was done through Pearson, accompanied by weekly discussions. It did take a lot of my time, but that is expected for an eight-week course. Navarro is very personable and shared some aspects of her life with us which made me like her a lot.
Took professor Navarro over the winter. It was accelerated as expected. Had assignments due throughout the week. Had discussions, chapter quizzes, and two chapter exams. Discussions were fairly easy, but she can be picky with the discussion responses. Other than that, the material learned was interesting and I would take professor Navarro again.
I loved this class so much! She is a great professor! Although we had to switch to online, she did not fail to teach the material well! Best class I have had so far! She is very understanding and her assignments are easy too!
Great professor! I highly recommend this class. Even taking a summer class I learned a lot and felt great the whole time. She responds to emails in less than an hour which is amazing! She's very supportive and understanding of any situation you may have.
Professor MGN is the bees knees. I took Human Sexuality for my humanities credit and I'm so thankful I did. This class was exciting and broke up my science heavy semester with a little fun. Because we are all online, participate in the discussions genuinely and you'll do well. Tests are open book/notes, no reason not get an A :)
I took her class this fall semester expecting it to be boring and hard, but it was actually the opposite. Her class is really fun, easy, and interesting! She's a really nice and caring teacher, who provides great feedback on all your assignments. Her way of teaching is awesome! As long as you read the textbook, You'll for sure pass. Take her class!
Professor MGN is amazing! I would recommend this class to anyone. 2 quizzes every week but as long as you pay attention to the lectures you'll pass.
MGN was one of my favorite professors at TMCC. She genuinely cares about her interactions with students and provides great feedback. She gets you to really think about the material you are learning. There is a lot of reading, but as long as you manage your time, its an easy A. Don't fall behind on your assignments and you'll love the class and her!
She's rude and unprofessional. I'm not sure why, but she's been very rude and unwilling to help recently. She's argued with me over things that really didn't need to be argued. Class is easy, but don't ask her to change a grade when you spell something wrong!
Professor Navarro is on top of her game when it comes to the subject, her class is lecture-based, all of her exams are based on the lectures she gives so attendance and taking notes is important. There are about 8 discussions for this class and around 12 homework assignments as well. There are also 2 short essays as well. Time management is key.
Marynia Giren-Navarro is one good character of a professor. From day one she lets students know what she expects and what the students should also expect from her course. MGN is always ready to schedule a Zoom meeting or answer questions via canvas. It is very nice speaking with her. Very experienced in her field(s) and teaching.
This is the second course I've taken with Professor MGN. Both of her classes were easy to engage in. Her assignments make you think about the topics and apply them to your life. She makes instructions clear, and she's always quick and responsive to questions. I also appreciated her timely manner in grading. I would definitely take her other courses
I absolutely loved this class! It was the BEST online class I have taken. Lectures and study outlines were concise and really interesting. I think it is a very user-friendly class for someone who likes to analyze people and understand the 'why' behind groups and individuals. MGN is an amazing teacher! I wish I would have found her classes sooner.
Professor Giren-Navarro is a good enough professor I suppose. I took her course as a required social science credit which was fair and good however, the issue is that this professor rambles a lot in her lectures. She gets off subject fairly easily it seems and goes off on side tangents. However, if you pay attention this should be an easy A.
I enjoyed her class. She was a great teacher. She made herself available when help was needed.
MGN is very passionate about sociology and teaching her students. Attendance was mandatory because of participation points, but she made her lectures interesting and interactive. Grade was based on participation, video and textbook chapter quizzes, 4 discussion post, and 2 reflection papers. Grading instructions are clear and reasonable.
No one in my class had any problems with grading besides me but everyone had a hard time understanding her. There were things she didn't say in her video lectures that were on the quizzes. Prof is heavily biased from a socialist perspective. I had a hard time relating to theclass. What was asked wasn't clearly stated. Stutters A LOT Vidoes drag on.
I took her in the winter semster. The things you will expect in this class are chapter book quizzes, video quizzes, 8 discussions, & a reflection paper. If thinking of taking a winter class, dedicate as much time as possible. It is important to put 100% effort in discussions as well, she is tough grader. She provides excellent feedback.
Something I must stress to you all before you take her class is that she grades her 101 course as if you were a Sociology major in a 3-400 level class. This is an entry level course for many Freshmen and I find it extremely unfair to hold us to such high expectations when this class is the first college class I have-- or many have ever taken.
I've had this teacher for a fullyear now I'm failing her class again because she is extremely hard on grading her discussions ask for your own opinion but when you put your opinion its wrong when I had a death inmy family and asked for time she said no she can't do anything for me I dont think she likes me so shes harder on grading Lots of reading
If you get the chance to take a class with MGN, do it! I cannot say enough good things. As long as you put in the effort and actually try in the class, you will get a good grade. I had some family things come up during the semester and she was very understanding. Also offers a couple of EC opportunities.
MGN is a most outstanding college professor! Compassionate with her students. Always lends excellent feedback and thorough, timely responses. Lectures engaging and intriguing! I believe I would not have learned so much had I taken Sociology 101 with any other instructor. Thank you, MGN, for a beautiful Sociology 101 experience!
The only thing with this class is that there is a quiz every Friday on the Chapter that you read for the week along with a discussion. As long as you read the chapters and watch her lectures the class is a piece of cake. It's time consuming but overall worth it in the end. The professor is definetly one of the best at TMCC!
Professor Giren-Navarro is the best! The class was really easy and interesting! Every week, you have to stay on top of chapter readings, do a discussion post, and a quiz. You only have to participate in 10 discussions. Professor Giren-Navarro also gets back to you pretty quickly if you ever need help! I would 100% take another one of her classes!
The course overall was not too difficult- every week there is a reading quiz, a discussion based on the weekly reading, and a video lecture quiz. Reading quizzes were easy as long as you read, and you have two attempts per question. Textbook was online. Overall good course, I learned a lot. I didn't like the lecture quizzes- videos were long.
Not clear with expectations. Talks too much about herself. Not a hard class, but not at all focused.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Easy A+ If u put in the work! HW consist of weekly discussions,1 reflection paper & 1 presentation. Exams are learning curve so u can retake until u get an A. She gives clear direction, and is more than fair when she grades your assignments. She is an incredible professor, who's cares about her students. Extra credit is offered!
Definitely recommend. I took the winter course. It's just like what the comment said from 1/14/2023. You'll mostly have to rely on the textbook (given for free for the class), but there were additional helpful lectures from the instructor. Just ensure you answer all the questions you are asked and plan ahead.
One of the most organized classes I've ever seen! The professor gives thoughtful feedbacks and provides a lot of resources for her students to succeed. If you have self-discipline and complete all of the assignments (quizzes, discussion, reflection paper, and presentation), than you shouldn't get anything less than an A!
While 261 was hard work, MGN made the class fun! She was able to tie psychology into personal life through discussions and it felt more like an in-person class than my other online ones: the professor is super nice in person, shares some interesting stories, and makes everything very interactive. It was a little disorganized but 100% recommend!!!
Professor MGN was very passionate and helped me truly understand the course. She gave good feedback with each discussion. She ensured that everyone was engaged and meeting the criteria she had. She was a little lecture heavy with many videos, although I don't think that they were necessarily needed in the case of the discussions. Fun class overall!
One of the best professors I have had. Most units had recorded lectures and PowerPoints available. Feedback given is insightful and helps for next assignments. Professor is understanding and she helps in any way that she can. I took two courses with this professor and I would recommend both courses and the professor to others.
As always, such a great professor! Sociology was organized well, the discussions were fun, and the finals are not tests. While there are some blemishes with the course, I still 100% recommend :)
I had an issue with turning in an assignment because of the software used and she was going to let me get a zero (and fail the class due to the weight) because it was turned in 1 minute late. (It was already uploaded but wouldn't submit) Extremely hard grader. Felt like I couldn't get 100% on anything with her, even when I followed the rubric.
Professor MGN is one of my all time favorite professors! She is lenient and easy to work with. If I could I would take this class over and over again. The homework isn't demanding at all as long as you read the text book, then this class will be so easy for you. I would recommend her to everyone, especially if you are interested in Psychology.
I don't recommend this class to anyone who isn't interested in sociology, she makes us do a lot more work than a typical 101 class.
I wouldn't recommend her online sociology class, she's not complying when technical difficulties occur.
Professor MGN was amazing. I wish I had put more effort into the course, as the content was so interesting and presented in an engaging way. Professor MGN is easy to reach and so receptive. Would definitely take another of her courses if offered the chance, and highly recommend this course to anybody with even a slight interest in sexuality.
She is very passionate about what she does and she does give a clear grading criteria but she grades based off of if she thinks it meets her standards. Lots of discussions and quizzes every week but they're super easy like 20 questions.
Professor MGN seems like she enjoys what she does, which comes through in the video lectures. What other professors treat as dry, dull material she makes interesting, which helps students learn and retain the material. I would take more of her classes without question.
She was a good teacher and is very passionate about her job. If you forget to read a chapter goodluck. The class gets very interesting and very difficult depending on the chapters.
Took Sociology 101 with Professor Giren-Navarro, the class itself was interesting, and I learned lots. The assignments could be difficult at times as it required lots of in depth thinking and reflecting. Overall, the work was manageable, just be ready to put in the time.
She is very passionate and inspirational. Weekly quizzes, 2 exams, 4 papers in total but she is an easy grader. She is great and helped me learn a lot.
Professor MGN is super helpful, is very fair with her assignments and grading, and makes sociology an interesting course, even for those taking it as a requirement, like myself. The workload is very manageable, engaging, and not overwhelming, even during her quick-paced summer course. Professor MGN is very responsive in feedback and to inquiries.
