A little hard to understand but an awesome professor!
She wasn't that bad, kinda hard to understand and often gets off topic. She came to class hungover once. But for the most part her tests are easy if you study for them and there's only one project which is pretty easy. Oh and don't buy the book.
She is a good person. As for a teacher, she's OKAY. She can be very confusing at times.
She struggles some with language, doesn'treally understand the true principles of our founding fathers. She does have a good sence of humor but takes herself to seriously.
Allows her political leanings to bring your grade down if you don't agree with her and she really has a communication problem because English is her 2nd language.
One of the best I've ever had
She has favoritism problems....her quizzes are kinda hard if you only read the chapter once.....if you miss the class on the day of a quiz she doesn't allow you to make it up yet if you come to class late or as it is dismissed she will....on the midterm and final the multiple choice you have to study for but the essay she allows a cheat sheet
I like her. She is fair. Her quizes can be difficult if you don't read the chapter and do the online quiz, but quizes only count 20% of your grade and she lets you drop the lowest quiz grade. She gives a lot of bonus. She is the best pol science instructor at CSU. I think she is great. TAKE HER....
I read the other comments listed, and some of the comments are not true. She doesn't show favoritism, and she doesn't grade you on whether or not you agree with her political standpoints. She is very fair. On the midterm and final, she tells you what questions to study. Some of these other students are in hater's mode. Her english is not that great
She is a great teacher . Her test are easy the come from the online learning center you only have one group project. You will have alot of quizs. Her test are easy cause she give you the study guide. For the essay she give a cheat sheet. highly recommended Partipate easy A on exams final will depend on your particpation.Would take her again.
She's sweet & often strays. Quizzes are easy if you skim the chapters you have to read, same with the tests. Mid-term & final, BEWARE!She has 8-9 essay topics that she's going to choose 2 from, then you write about 1.Yes, she allows a cheat sheet, but who wants to write 8-9 essays in microfont? Still, very fun and fairly easy.
She has a passion for what she believes, unfortunately she's completely wrong at least 50% of the time but she listens and she grades very fairly; for that reason she's a great teacher with the best sense of humor.
Very motivated. A little hard to understand but I don't think she played favorites at all. Just do what you are supposed to do and you will get the grade you deserve.
Dr.Okura makes no secret of her political affiliations and you have to make sure she tells the whole story sometimes. She loves to incite angry 'debates' which are basically Jerry Springer style arguments with no point. If you do disagree with her, just make sure you give her your reasons and it will be fine.
Hard to understand, but she has a passion for the subject.Quiz questions were a little ambiguous. I think she does play favorites some. Tests aren't bad if you study, but it was hard to figure out what she wanted us to know. She gets very sidetracked. I wouldn't take her again if I had a choice.
A lot of videos were shown in the class that were very interesting. But when it comes to tests and assignments...they are hard! No study guides given. She is very fond of essays.(beware)
VERY hard to understand her accent most of the time. Her quizes are "reading" quizes which means shes testing you on something she hasn't taught. Many extra credit reaction paper assignments avaliable. She has a political agenda and she will get it across even she doesn't teach the policies the US actually uese. 2 Tests-Midterm and Final.
She is never wrong. Very biased. Very liberal. Gives A-'s to people on in class exercises when there is NOTHING marked wrong! Can hardly understand her due to her thick accent. Violates privacy through emails. Power hungry. NOT HELPFUL! Makes issues out of the smallest things and is condescending in nature. ALWAYS be in class.
Dr. Okura is extremely liberal and therefore we watched a great deal of films either bashing the US for not helping other countries, or bashing the US for imposing itself on other countries. This is all communicated in a subtle manner through her emotional documentaries. I agree with the previous commentator. attendance in mandatory but useless.
Not the best teacher to take in this subject but not the worst. Very passionate about the subject so she can never be wrong. Hates the US gov. Kinda hard to understand when she says some words. TAKE HER AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
You'll learn very little from her if you understand what she says. If you care about the issues, better go to youtube by yourself. An easy A, very disappointing, waste of time. Oh, and don't object her, if you can't risk your grade, but use evaluation at the end of semester.
Hard class because of unit quizes (so you have to read) but she has a sense of humor and is nice. She def. is liberal and I felt it in my best interest to write my essays toward her opinions. I wouldn't be totally opposed to taking another class with her.
Great professor! Some of these people are just lazy or too critical. This is college, so yes you are going to have to work for your grade. Learned a lot in her class, she knows a lot. She is helpful and funny. I have taken her 3 times. As long as you show effort and study you will do fine.
Not my favorite teacher. The unit quizzes are easy. A lot of stuff she puts on exams that she does not put in the review. She shows interesting films.
THE COURSE WAS INTERESTING. HER TEST WERE A BIT HARD, BUT OVERALL I ENJOYED THE MATERIAL THAT WE COVERED
She is hard to understand. She is not very nice or understanding about missing classes, especially when a grandparent passes away. She also gives quizzes over stuff that she does not go over in class. I did not like this class and found it difficult to keep up.
hardddd....the midterm was hard and the final harder!!!....the class isnt so boring but if u are not d kind dat likes studyin do not take her!
Fairly easy. The only real grades are unit quizzes, the midterm and final. The unit quizzes are ten questions. Just listen during the lectures and do the practice quizzes online. Most of the questions on the quizzes come from the online practice and not the actual book or lecture.
Global Issues: Worst class I have ever taken and I regret it a lot. I have made all A's in every other course I've taken at CSU and in this one I failed! She wants you to prepare 10 essays before each test and you'll only end up submitting one. ...If you aren't taking a lot of other courses and you're used to online classes go ahead and try it out.
Does not answer questions and is unreliable.
I took her as a joint enrollment student (meaning i'm also in high school)and it was just like a challenging high school class. there are 5 quizzes and 4 are SUPER easy. the midterm was also very easy and the final was alright. I mean it is a college class. I would reccomend her!
I took her as a joint enrollment student (meaning i'm also in high school)and it was just like a challenging high school class. there are 5 quizzes and 4 are SUPER easy. the midterm was also very easy and the final was alright. I mean it is a college class. I would reccomend her! DONT LOOK AT THE RATINGS OF THE ONE UUNDER THIS.. OBVIOUSLY I DID IT
She is unreliable, never answers questions, and takes a long time to respond.
Awful.
She was a little hard to understand. I really enjoyed her and her tests were straight forward. She tells you exactly what is going to be on the test.
Wordy class I've ever had.... Bad teacher.
Many comments that I read concerning issues that individuals had concerning courses with her are daft and untrue. She does not show favortism, nor does she attempt to pass a political agenda in her courses. Some comments written here stand as a means to scare students away from this professor. Also, most of the negativity here was simply ignorant.
She is incredibly difficult to understand ? heavy Japanese accent. Goes on and on while you?re trying to write down the info on the slides, but she?s not on topic which can get annoying. She gives her tests one day, then finishes talking about the chapter the next class. Not recommended if you have a choice.
Just do what she say to do?. she's very clear on what her requirements are, and very helpful if you just ask. I took a 100% online course on Global Issues with her, she seems like a sweet, organized, dedicated instructor.
Pretty good teacher, knows her material. The book is useless, don't even buy it, just go to lectures. If you can't handle accented English, spare everyone the chore of listening to you whine about her accent, she's totally understandable.
I have taken her for both Global Issues and a Political Thought Class. She is a wonderful teacher and knows her information. Just don't piss her off or get on her bad side. There is a lot of work, quizzes, and nothing ocmes too easily. As for Global Issues she was amazing and so was the subject... take it if you can.
This class was very difficult for me. She would lecture over a chapter, but the test would actually be over another chapter that we had to go read in the book and learn ourselves. Im guessing she did this to cover more material. She requires you to come to class and you better not get caught texting. She will drop you a letter grade.
I do not recommend taking her for an online course. When you ask questions she easily becomes angry. A lot of the students in my class had a similar question about an assignment - she sent out a mass e-mail condescending them and telling them to re-read the syllabus... which is HUGE and disorderly.
I have taken several classes with Dr. Okura. She has such a great way of teaching and whatever the course I always end up going home and still discussing it and researching it. There is a lot of interaction in class which is great. As long as you do the readings, don't get on her bad side, and are open minded you will love her!
She has ridiculous expectations for this class. I took it online thinking it would be an easy A. Definitely not! I am an A student and failed this class. She has way too much reading material and her quizzes and exams are worded very weird. Plus, for her exams, she has you write five essays in advance (two pages each) and only asks for one.
Mrs. Okura is not a bad teacher. The class can be difficult if you don't try. The test are challenging but not impossible to pass. There are only 2 test, 5 quizzes, and 1 video project. The quizzes can be really easy if you read the book. The test have some quiz questions on there. And she drops the lowest quiz grade
Dr. Okura's is a great professor. As long as you study hard for the tests and also read the chapters before quizzes, you will pass the class.
You cannot understand one word this lady says. She does not answer questions and is very unclear.
This is one of the easiest classes I've ever taken. Show up, take notes, and read the book before quizzes. She will tell you everything you need to know. A lot of people whine about their grade because they don't STUDY. Just study. It's not that hard.
Easy class, Great teacher. Her accent is pretty thick but I could understand her. Gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. Just be sure to READ before each test!
Great class for Pols1101. Thick accent but you can understand her. LOTS of ways to win extra credit so READ and LISTEN, AND BE SURE TO PARTICIPATE!! EASY Class if you try!
I do not like Dr. Okura at all. She is EXTREMELY bias and teaches her classes according to her own personal beliefs. I feel like I am in an indoctrination camp while I am in her classes. She is hard to understand also. Her English is a little difficult to grasp sometimes. Her tests are crazy difficult and her constant quizzes are ridiculous.
Quizzes are easy if you study the definitions in back of book for each chapter and read over chapter before quizzes (only 10 questions each) Tests you have to study the quizzes you took. She does have an accent but you should not have a problem understanding her. She is very nice.
Very nice teacher and easy class. There are 5 quizzes that are 10 questions each but she drops your lowest quiz grade and uses only the highest 4. You must read the chapter that the quiz is on in order to do well. Besides the quizzes, you have a midterm, final, and a propaganda project that is very easy as long as you follow directions.
Okura is a great teacher. I took Pol 1101 and made an A. Although her English isn't very clear she communicates everything you need to do on syllabus in both classes. She gives extra credit to your overall grade for doing simple things such as perfect attendance. Go to tutorials and get extra points on exams. Great teacher.
She was a very nice and helpful teacher. If you participate in class, she gives extra points and if you have perfect attendance. She made the material fun to learn because the whole time she didn't stand and lecture. I am taking her again next semester for another class.
I liked this professor a whole lot. She's very pleasant and cares about how you do. Lectures are interesting and she makes the class more fun in general. She also gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. I would definitely take her class again.
She can be a little difficult to understand sometimes but she's a good teacher and she knows what she's talking about.
Professor Okura is very knowledgable. I enjoyed her teaching method. She provides the class with interesting and controversial material that allows students to critically think about our government system. I wish I would have taken her class in the Fall. Summer didn't seem like enough time for such an interesting class. She is effective and fair.
I loved Dr Okura! One of my favorite professor at CSU. I would definitely take her class again if given the chance.
She is a horrible professor! I don't recommend taking her class at all! She goes through the notes to quickly and doesn't post them online and she can be rude.
Do no take this professor she is horrible i would never recommend her provides a study guide but doesn't even give the notes for you study for the exam never prepared didn't give us the notes we needed for the exam she talks way too fast can't even understand her if you take her drop her class immediately she is setting you up for FAILURE!
Pros: -Just listen to lectures -knowledgeable on topics -interesting class -lots of extra credit opportunities Cons: -can be a tough grader -study guides can sometimes be misleading or not cover everything -says propaganda book is required, although you never use it Additional Comments: -strict on cell phones, electronics, etc..
very sweet and and easy A. Just come to class and do the discussions and take notes on the handouts. You have one film paper to write and 5 quizzes over readings each week.
Took this class for Maymester and it was an interesting class! There were 3 LONG (15 pages) assignments and a 4 page paper. It was time consuming and you definitely must put forth some effort, but not too bad. Very glad I took this class because I was skeptical at first. It is A LOT of material though.
fill out the note guides. do the reading for the reading quizzes. participate to get extra credit and have perfect attendance for an extra 5 points on overall grade. easy A.
This course has been the worst experience I've ever had in my educational history. She grades extremely subjectively and often time dismisses the questions that I ask in class because "She went to grad. school." She has been very rude. The classroom atmosphere is a mess & the way she presents her lectures are even messier. Do not take her classes.
This was a regular class. Professor Okura gave notes and made it easy to find things in the textbook. Assessments weren't too difficult but her extra credit BARELY helps.
If you don't want to self teach do not take this class. The professor will teach lessons after quizzing you on it, so you basically go into quizzes blind. The professor also never tested us on information we actually went over during class, also never checks for clarity. The professor also NEVER responds to emails. It is not hard class overall.
I didnt like this class. Hard grader but gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. hard to understand her accent sometimes. quizzes are super easy and so are the tests because they are just like the quizzes. study.
Main takeaway: Avoid if you can. This class should not have been difficult. Several assignments were just "busy work," and some of the test questions were absurd (pointless and needlessly difficult). It is hard to explain, but she just makes things more difficult than they need to be. Textbook and lecture notes are a must.
She's not very clear, but you can get through it. Power through the class and like actually study.
Was given a project and outline to go by and followed everything on the outline but was still given a failing grade because I didn't "follow the criteria" You're also forced to show your face on Zoom class and get a failing grade for not showing your face for that day.
I've never received anything lower than a B in a class before. She's a very tough grader and explains things vaguely. Save yourself the trouble.
For a make-up final my professor wanted me to write 2 five-page papers and one of them only had content on a 15 slide presentation, we couldn't use any outside sources. She also did not give me my instructions for my final until the last minute, in which I had to email her for her to actually send it to me. She gives very poor instructions.
Her midterm was 30% and the final was an additional 30% of our grade even though we had several quizzes and other assignments. Her grading criteria was very unclear. She had no rubrics or even instructions for certain assignments and would take points off for random things. This class was so disorganized. Never again.
She doesn't post the power points she uses so you are required to take notes in class. She moves very fast in class so be ready, she also jumps around a lot. She does allow you to take the midterm and final wherever you want. Hard to understand.
Please save yourself time and do not take any classes instructed by this professor. She moves extremely fast and grades tough. Also, be mindful that when you do have concerns in regards to your grade she will get very snappy with you. Overall I would only recommend taking her if you absolutely have to and have no other options at the moment.
Professor Okura is very knowledgable and seems to love the subject she teaches but she's a very hard grader. She also requires you to read a lot of very long articles for a short quiz. Her quizzes ask very specific questions from the readings instead of checking if the student has an overall understanding of the concept. She grades essays harshly.
Great professor, knows what shes talking about and is passionate about it. I am confused on how this professor has such low rating - I'm very glad I ignored them and took her class anyway. If you simply show up and pay attention, she essentially gives you all the answers to her entirely multiple choice quizzes. It's really not that difficult.
But She is very knowledgeable but well not listen to her students
Do NOT take this class unless you absolutely have to. She will not help you with any questions you have about the class or your grade if you email her about them, and will probably get snappy with you through email about it. Never had below a B in any class before this one, even though I showed up every day and did my work.
I took two of her classes, and in my opinion, her classes are easy. All you have to do is do the assignments and the readings. This class was very interesting to me. In my experience, I would take her class again. However, one thing I will say is she could've bumped up my grade by less than one point to get an A lol.
it wasn't a terrible class and had clear deadlines. you will have to read from the textbooks. i took it online, so this is only my experience. not a lot of writing except for the tests. you just have to do the assignments and you'll get a good grade.
I enjoyed her online courses. Every week consisted of 1 video, quiz, and video annotations. Very easy and interesting class.
unclear instructions and the need for textbook
I reached out for help and she was very rude, just take the class online.
