Attendance not required but he does give you test answers if a day where not many kids come to class.Your classwork is slide shows. Give most of it but leaves some blank that you fill in in class. 3 exams 1 essay. No homework Referenced book occasionally but other than the 1st chapter I never used it and got a B.I would take his Highly recommend him
Do not get the textbook unless you believe you're going to have trouble learning the material. He doesn't use it, all tests will be note/lecture based. Attendance is not required but if you miss class for an unexcused reason, he won't give you the note. Very nice, funny, and helpful. AWESOME overall. interesting :D
Definitely recommend this professor! I had him for intro to sociology. Don't need the book!! No homework or student presentations, just lectures and exams. He can be a little crude at times but it wasn't too bad. He is funny. Great class.
You will have 3 tests and 1 paper. I think I heard the teacher say he was changing the paper assignment to a Research paper starting in the fall of 2013 or spring 2014. The tests were pretty easy. For taking notes, the teacher has you print out his notes and you fill in the blanks when he lectures the power point presentation.Do not buy the textbook
This professor will keep you interested in discussion at all times. He is very straight forward and demands respect in his class not only toward him but to each other. He is extremely helpful. He is there for you. If you do not make a good grade in his class, then it is because you just want to fail.
If you want an excellent professor, take this one. He is extremely helpful. He is very clear in what he is teaching. He is a down to earth professor that is very understanding. He demands respect not only to him, but to one another. His work is self explanatory and if you do not understand, he will help you until you do. Excellent Professor!!!!!
I would recommend him to everyone. He is extremely interesting as a professor and he makes class interesting. He makes you want to learn. He will help you as much as you need to make sure you get the grade you want. Even if you are shy in discussion, he makes you comfortable to do so. He is very down to earth and understanding. Take this professor!
Dr. Nottingham is very interesting and knows his stuff well. He has you print out the notes and fill in the blanks as he goes along on his power point presentation. He can be funny and show interesting videos during his lecture. If you study the notes and pay attention in class you will do well.
If you attend class regularly and pay attention it is an easy A.
Very cool teacher. Fairly easy class but you MUST attend class daily to get the notes or you won't pass. You DO NOT need the text book. One project that is EASY. Pay attention. Impossible to fail if you go to class.
GREAT teacher he makes sure you actually learn and comprehend before moving along. He makes class very interesting and keeps our attention. loved this class
He is very nice and very clear. The class is not difficult and he makes it interesting. You have to attend to every class to get notes if not you will fail.He does not uses the book,so do not buy it. He only gives 3 test including the final and a assignment.
The easiest class I've ever taken. He was a great prof and the test was right out of the notes. He puts the notes (with blanks) online, print them and fill them out in class. It doesn't get any easier.
Easiest Class took it over the summer 6 week course the only work we had was 2 exams and 1 essay with 1000 words. You'd have to try hard to fail his class
Dr. Nottingham knows his stuff! He's a professor that genuinely enjoys what he does and it shows in lectures. He was funny and passionate about sociology. HIGHLY recommend.
Awesome Prof, and an awesome class, too. Super interesting lectures, he genuinely wants you to understand the material. I learned so much in his class.
I loathe this subject. The professor does a great job of keeping it interesting for us. He uses sarcastic humor which keeps the students engaged. The testsquizzes aren't bad and are from the lecture notes which we're allowed to use for the tests. Overall an excellent professor that wants to see his students succeed.
He's the most chill teacher you will ever take. His class is manageable and not boring. He will laugh and joke around sometimes as well, so he is not too monotone. I took his hybrid class and it was consistent all semester. One quiz a week and two online discussions a month. Sometimes gives free quiz answers in class. Very easy and no hard times.
I took the hybrid course. His lectures are intriguing and witty. He responds to communications in a timely manner and wants you to do well. Attendance while not "mandatory" is required in order to pass. The notes are fill ins, only given during class. He even offered to give feedback prior to the due date of our Gordon Rule paper. A+++
Make classes real interesting and offers help and is very clear. He even makes a few funny remarks and has interesting things to say. Overall Amazing professor I highly recommend.
The coolest teacher you will ever have!
Mason, is not a teacher I would not take him again! He's very opinionated when on the first day he tells you he doesn't care about your opinion but the whole time all he does is talk about his so I feel like he is not a good professor.
Cool guy. I did his hybrid class, super flexible if you're a busy person. Gordon rule paper is deff required and he graded it pretty harshly. Just listen and take notes from his power points and you should be okay. He also doesn't care if you show up to class or not.
Best professor by far.
Great teacher! Gave clear direction and even offered to edit our Gordon rule papers for us before we turned them in! If you attend class and pay attentiontake notes, you will get an A!
If you take an intro to sociology college class, consider this one. I'm an old military veteran and this class is actually interesting. I was very intrigued by this professors teaching style and point of view. He is very clear and opinionated, and I respect that.
Chill teacher. If you pay attention you will pass. His lectures are pretty interesting and funny. When people show up late he gives answers on the test for those on time. Definitely recommend him for anyone taking Sociology.
Professor Nottingham is by far the best professor I've ever had. Even though he does not take attendance, I would come to class simply because I love his lectures! He's a funny guy who really cares about his students. I would definitely take him again.
TAKE THIS CLASS AND THIS PROFESSOR! He is amazing, theres only 3 test the entire semster and there pretty easy. Lectures are not boring bc hes pretty funny and is really engaging. Very willing to answer questions and help on any concepts that arent understood. Over a great professor and a great class for Intro to Sociology
Dr. Nottingham is a great teacher. explains things well. Took him for sociology, there are 3 tests and a paper and tests are not cumulative . gives you the notes and you just have to fill in some blanks from the power points in class. he's a very nice guy and will help explain material to you if you go to his office. make sure to study for test.
This is my second time taking him. His lectures are really interesting and if you take down the notes & use the study guide you'll pass. He gives great feedback on the paper too. Overall he is very well liked among his students and is helpful when you have questions. Witty. Few tests are given and gives exam answers on low attendance days.
His lectures are extremely interesting and all you have to do is print off the lecture notes, come to class, and fill in the blanks from the PowerPoint! Expect 3 exams, one paper, and a Final - but he provides study guides and crystal clear directions. So as long as you study and come to class you'll do great! Highly recommend him!
He is hilarious, sweet, and nice to look at. It's true that you print power pt's and fill in the blanks vbut know that studying is important. His lectures are interesting and keep you entertained. He helped me when I missed a class, and offers to go over exam results if you are unhappy with results. He's a caring & laid back prof.
SUPER EASY. He's funny, good looking, and easy to understand. What more could you want. Yes you print the notes and bring them to class, but you can mass print so that you don't forget. Filling in the blanks is super easy, just pay attention. And if you missed anything you could always ask him after class for clarification or help.
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! I looked at his ratings before I took him and that's what persuaded me to do so and I do not regret it! There are only 3 exams and one paper. No homework. Fill in the blank notes. He is amazing and nice to look at! He is willing to help anyone pass and his tests are easy if you pay attention. I'm taking him again!!
Humanities professors are usually some of my favorite. Nottingham takes the cake. His lectures are fill in the blanks and he posts study guides a week before the test. The material was a little challenging at some points. But he is available and helpful if you visit him outside of class. Will be taking his marriage and family class.
Great teacher. No homework and funny stories that help you remember concepts for the test.
Mr. Nottingham did a wonderful job relating each aspect of sociology to something we encounter every day. If you pay attention during his lectures, take the notes he points out, and engage him in intelligent conversation, then this class with be fantastic. Plus he's a closet furry with a clown phobia who loves buttered pie. A.K.A. Doctor Awesome.
Prof. Nottingham was amazing. First day of class he told us we didn't need to buy an over $100 book because he download a free version for us. The guy is really down to earth and funny. The class was relatively easy. You have a quiz and discussion board due every week, but as long as you paid attention it was easy to pass I took his hybrid class.
I took him for introduction to sociology. So I decided to take him for marriage & family. I enjoyed the content of the class less than I did with introduction to sociology. But he still made the class enjoyable. 3 tests, 1 paper. Is a pretty easy A if you study.
I took this class fully online. For an online class I actually enjoyed the material. From some of his PowerPoint's you can tell he's pretty funny. His quizzes and discussion boards are decently hard, but as long as you read through the PowerPoint's and are literate, you'll be fine. I passed with a 91 and didn't have to dedicate a lot of time.
He was a great teacher and gave great lectures, but if you're not a good test taker, don't take him (unless it's an online class). I loved the material and studied a lot, but still barely received a B because I'm terrible with tests. You're only graded on 3 exams and a Gordon rule paper.
gives great lectures and is very good at explaining things, makes everything so easy to understand, grades very fairly, no exams or tests just quizzes every week
Every lecture is amazing! He is VERY funny which makes it easier to remember the lectures. The notes are provided online so all you have to do is copy from the lecture. He is very detailed and informative and puts in humor in order to get his students entertained. 5/5!
He doesn't take attendance, but you need to go to class to get the notes (which are fill in the blank from a power point). He's a very good teacher who loves what he is talking about. It's an incredibly straightforward class
Hands down the BEST professor Ive had at hcc. If you learn by structure this is the class for you. He actually teaches and I have personally gained so much from this class. I feel like everyone needs a Nottingham in their life!
He is so awesome!!! He keeps you engaged in class and makes jokes. He cares about you and your grade. Very easy class
Dr. Mason Nottingham is easily the best professor to ever step foot onto campus. He is hilarious, caring and thorough. Dr. Mason provides amazingly fun and interactive lectures which easily became the highlights of my days. If I had the opportunity to take ANY of his courses again, I'd capture it in a heartbeat.
His voice is soooo boring but other than that, their are a total of 3 exams all which come with a study guide. His lectures are fun but his voice is monotone, kinda puts you to sleep....
I took Marriage&Family as an elective. Not a difficult class if you study. Professor Mason is always willing to explain things further if you don't understand something. I found his lectures a little boring considering we're just following a powerpoint the whole time. But everyone learns differently! Would take again.
Great professor. In order to pass your exams you have to study the study guides if you don't be prepared to fail. You have to show up to class in order to get your notes. The major essay make sure you do it exactly the way he says to. He's here to help. Amazing.
Professor Nottingham is hands down the BEST professor at HCC. I originally took Family & Marriage and then took him for Sociology. His lectures are extremely entertaining and he is very charming. He has real-life stories to go along with his lectures, so it's very easy to understand. If I could take a class w/ him again, I would in a heartbeat.
Dr. Nottingham really knows this topic well and enjoys it! He made Sociology very interesting even at 8 am. He was not hard at all. Showing up to class really helps for exams. I wouldnt have wanted to take anyone else for Sociology.
His quizzes are based off of powerpoint that are usually 25-35 slides long. I recommend taking notes on the powerpoints or else it is hard to succeed on the quizzes. Note taking on the slides is time consuming but very beneficial. I don't think his grading criteria was specific enough considering the points he took off for some of my discussions.
Best professor at HCC by far. Taken two of his classes and had the best experiences. No homework only 3 exams and gives you study guide for each and 1 essay. Fill in the blank powerpoint notes must come to class in order to get notes. Awesome guy explains everything so thoroughly makes sure everyone understand. Interesting material, take him!!!
Good Professor. You have a quiz every week and 5 discussions. Part of the Gordon rule class you have one paper due at the end of the course. You do not need to purchase the book, the professor provides a digital book. Read the chapter and review the power points and you are good.
He was a total delight. There is a gordon rule paper and he helps you through it. He posts all his lectures so its okay if you miss. he keeps it interactive and is genuinely a good person
READ HIS POWERPOINTS! ALL of the answers are on them for the quiz's. His powerpoint's are really fun to read so that's pretty cool. :) Everything is really easy if you read his powerpoint so you really don't need the book. The only reason why I got a B was because I had it for 8 weeks so i rushed lol. totally recommend his class!
BEST PROFESSOR! His teaching skill is very unique and he provides answers to test once class begins. Always there to help! Golden rule assignment thats due and he helps you get the grade you want.
Great professor, you could tell he loves lecturing and teaching the class about the things he is passionate about. The lectures are a little boring but if you like sociology 10/10 would recommend!! He is a very reasonable grader, and there aren't very many grades in the class. Does not take attendence but it helps to be present for the lectures.
This teacher is so nice. All we do is take notes and we had three exams and one essay. Everything is easy as long as you do your work and come to class you will be fine but if you could not make it to class he'll work with you. He is very understanding.
I took Professor Nottingham's Intro to Sociology class and I liked the class! I found the material very interesting. Every week we had a powerpoint, a quiz, and occasionally a discussion and supplementary material to go along with the lesson. The quizzes are not hard and notes can be used on them. He also gives an extra credit oppurtunity.
He is amazing and willing to help. His directions are very clear
This professor is the reason why I switched my degree, and just recently graduated with my Sociology Degree this past fall. He changed my life and the way I looked at communities. Thank you so much Mr Nottingham!
Doesnt take attendance, no final, 3 test and 1 paper. If you get lower than an A, its on you. Hes hilarious in his lectures and easy to talk to.
I took this course in an 8 week setting. It was my hardest course while full time school and work. A lot of reading content although he does add humor to his lessons, there are many grammar errors and many instances where your paragraphs in readings are cut off and unavailable. He does his best to make the content fun but the quizzes are hard.
He's very funny and makes sure everyone understands what he's talking about because of how much jargon there is. Only one big paper and usually 3 exams but due to COVID it became quizzes on each topic. It's impossible to not get a good grade in his class unless you don't do anything all semester. He's colorblind and gets confused by blue/green.
Prof made class easy and hes organized. Mostly powerpoints but its not a hard class at all and he gives extra credit at the end
He'd post weekly assignments which included powerpoints with the lecture, discussion boards (which were either answering a question & replying to someone else or creating test questions), & a week quiz. There was a final paper that determined if you failed or passed. Overall, 10/10 & he always reminds students to email him and he's quick to reply.
Great professor, highly recommend! Took family and marriage and i loved each moment of the class!
The Professor uses a free, accessible text book & produces a slideshow of each lecture for you (easy to download in PDF format for studying!). It's an easy A if you have the time to read and comprehend EVERYTHING. Great Professor. Very hands off to allow you to study the material but available if needed.
Great professor who gives you all the tools and more that you need to pass. Awesome class!
I recommend taking his Intro to Sociology course. He provides detailed PowerPoints for each section and really interesting material is covered. It is easy to stay engaged in this course and complete the assignments. I suggest to complete all assignments. I missed 2 discussions and received a B+ in the course, but could have had an A if I did them.
Professor Mason has, personally, opened my eyes to the realm of Sociology through his passionate and caring teaching skills. He is extremely understanding and genuine in his intentions and words. He is very well-spoken and fluid in speech which makes his lectures feel like story time. I could go on but to sum up... THIS is a teacher.
Super easy if you just read the PowerPoints, do the short quizzes, and class discussions. Overall, amazing teacher, and would definitely recommend this professor to anyone taking sociology. :)
Mr. Nottingham is clear in his expectations and enjoys what he does. My outlook on sociology has been expanded and broaden - which reflects on the kind of instructor he is. Recommended.
He is very understanding, hilarious and gives great lectures and gives examples for everything which helps you remember many things
All assignments are based on his powerpoint. But one time and the only he took forever to respond. Only receive one chance only. Don't need to buy anything.
Stop. You found your Professor. Do not look any further. What I thought Sociology to be was not it. I panicked, however Professor Mason's PowerPoints & examples that he gives to teach you are amazing. He pulls you in & uses humor when you least expect it. This man loves Sociology and it shows. He is there if you have any questions or need any help.
Great professor, you'll laugh a lot and discuss topics that matter. I only wish I would've attended every lecture so I could have done better on the exams.
Dr. Nottingham is an excellent professor. I took sociology online from him and learned a lot. He grades fairly and sets clear expectations. He publishes his lectures on Monday morning and typically assigns a quiz and sometimes a Discussion Board post. You have one week to complete the quiz and DB post. Enjoyable lectures and manageable workload.
As a sociology major, if I could take Professor Nottingham for every sociology class I'll ever need in the future I definitely would. He's so committed to what he teaches and is an overall amazing professor. While attendance isn't necessary as it's not counted for a grade, his class is lecture heavy and the lectures are key to passing the tests!
Amazing Professor! Attendance and participation not mandatory, and class is all lectures but he keeps it entertaining and hilarious. As someone who gets bored from long lectures, I never lost interest. He makes things easy to understand. This is a Gordon rule course but he gives advice, making it less stressful. Tests have everything from reviews!
Such a great professor, I thoroughly enjoyed this course. Dr. Mason answers emails promptly and is there to help if you need him. Just take the slide notes and review your exam study guide, you'll be fine.
I came into this class not really looking forward to sociology, but this had to be one of my favorite classes in college. He is super chill and relaxed, his lectures are amazing, he explains topics with perfection, and he is super caring about your success. As long as you come to class, and participate youre gonna have a blast in this class!
Professor Nottingham made a class I thought would be extremely boring, not boring. He only gave us the information we needed to know, there was no filler, and his exams were based on all the notes we took so as long as you studied those, you were good to go! He was willing to answer any questions and help outside of class. He is a great professor!
Professor Nottingham communicated throughout, he gives great feedback and over all seemed very laid back. The assignments are posted weekly, pretty simple; read a power point, watch some videos and write. He will want your opinion on things so just be ready to have a voice.
Average teacher, not bad. Little tough on the grading but overall was easy class. Missed one assignment and tried to submit late, was not accepted. I still passed with a 89% but wish I had got an A lol. My issue tho, turn in all your work on time, then your good!
I didn't know a thing about Sociology before starting, and I ended up loving it!! He inspired me to learn more and look at society in a different way. Great lectures, amazing material, and clear grading.
Understanding
entertaining classes, good lectures, funny stories.
Good teacher overall just the lack of assignments is the worst part where you will have 3 test a essay and one more assignment so do good on the test.
The professor's inclusion of personal beliefs, unrelated anecdotes, and a significant focus on personal experiences detracts from the learning environment and makes it difficult to fully engage with the course material.
Amazing professor, I miss him so bad...Keeps things unbiased, teaching by the research. The only complaint was that there was one assignment outside of the exams. It seemed good at first, but I wish there was more to help keep your knowledge that will later be revisited on the exams
THE ONLY THING WRONG! is me not applying myself on exams, he is great! goes over everything, super funny and nice! only grades are the exams, some practice questions and then ONE golden rule essay that he legit reads and tells you what to change over and over so you can get an A, and attendance is not mandatory, but to get the notes you should go.
