Has a very thick accent, but is willing to help. He drops one quiz out of 9. His tests are very percise on information in his handouts. Remember the practice quizes on the book for class quizes. Always go to class especially on thursdays for extra pts.
Dr. Zhang was very clear about what to expect in class. Just study from his Learning Objectives and you should get at least a B on the exams. His quizes come straight from Microbiologyplace.com's practice exams and quizes. He presents really good examples that relate to what he's teaching.
Dr. Zhang is my favorite teacher. He lectured very well and he made sure we understood everything. His tests were straight forward and not tricky. Just do your learning objectives and study from the CD-rom and you will be okay.
Dr. Zhang is a good teacher, but I have to disagree about his tests. I found some of his questions confusing and tricky, and he asked about the smallest details. Otherwise, I think it was an excellent class. He is always prepared and thorough, and the Learning Objectives helped to define what you needed to know. With a lot of work, I got an A.
He was the worst teacher i've ever had in whole my life, too much material for one section
He is a great teacher, i learned alot and i loved attended class... which is rare for me! He gives you alot of points and his hmwk asst. arent graded just do them and you'll get points! The tests are extremely hard though, but i pulled off a B in the class! Since he is the only professor teacher for micro and your stuck, you should enjoy him!
he is bad and hard. dont take any class with him
he is so hard and unfair, also he has a very bad accent that u can hardly understand him, don't take his class.
He does not like helping his students. He enjoys flashing his fake smile. Micro 200 is designed for students to fail.
What do you guys expect? It's not Dr. Zhang's fault that microbiology is NOT the easiest subject in the world, but he does a REALLY good job at presenting the material. He's knows a little TOO much about microorganisms (which is GOOD though!) and he's super enthusiastic about what he teaches. Do all his learning objectives and you'll be good to go!
Warning to all students that HAVE TO take this class!! He is the most unreasonable professor I've ever met! He has no sympathy for you or your grade whatsoever. Make sure your scantrons are done PERFECTLY because if you have the slightest mistake or your scantron is rejected you're pretty much screwed!! beware!! this teacher is horrible!
well, basically he screwed me over and took a B away from me on one of the exams because i accidentally put the wrong form on the scantron and wouldn't grade it as form B instead of A even though he realized that it was form B test. he pretty much blew me off and told me that that test wouldn't help my grade. yea. he's very condescending and rude.
Class is not that boring but professor is!!! He does not make things clear, and he will not clear them up for when your lost...not even if you ask him during class or office hours.Good Luck if u do decide to take this class...Oh and one last thing be sure to have everything correct and bubbled dark on your scantrons!!!
Dr. Zhang is cold and evil. He doesn't care about his students at all. He has the worst personality. He doesn't have any social skills. His voice is annoying and mean. Researchers looking for places to learn. THIS AIN'T THE PLACE.
He was terrible at explaining things, especially if students had questions. He does have a thick accent, but that doesnt really affect his teaching. If there is any hope of comprehending what he is talking about, definitely read beforehand and do the learning objectives.
class is not hard. just do the learning objectives and you will fine for the lecture exams
seriously? just drop it now...
let's just say....@#&%@#%....(since it has to be a clean post). anyway, i highly recommend anyone who needs this class for nursing school to take it somewhere else. however, if you have a strong heart and determined mind to deal with constant "advices" from a rather careless professor, please take this course. trust me, You Will Hate Him at the end
Nothing wrong with Dr. Zhang except his heavy asian accent. He gives you everything you need to succeed; however, you still have to understand what is in the book and remember it. All four pre-nursing science courses are hard wherever you go. It's never the professor's fault if you can't understand the material, put in the time, or are not enthused
Hate this class (only cause of the teacher). Had to take it as a Nursing Pre-Req and it was really hard. Had a great lab teacher and its the only thing that helped my grade. Tests in lecture are difficult and cover a lot of material.
zhang is hard b/c he covers a lot of material, and has a heavy accent that you have to get used to. his quizzes are from the cd-rom, his tests are kinda hard. bio is hard but this guy made it that much tougher.
This class is very intensive. It is required so do all you can to help your grades. Do the learning objectives carefully (and study off of them for the test) and copy the test answer keys he posts by his office as some of the previous test questions will be on the final. This is not an easy class, but at least he's happy to teach his students.
This class covers a lot of material and you really should go to class to gain those in class assignments and quiz points. Not to bad if you read the book.
Not helpful, hard to understand, lectures are not formatted efficiently and are thus useless (slides are too small to see details as well)
WORST professor ever! Not only does he have a hard to understand accent, but he flies through his lectures. You have to teach yourself in this class. His tests do not reflect your knowledge on the subject and he gives a lot of trick questions. Strongly recommend you take micro elsewhere. If you take it here, he uses almost the same final every ye
He's one of those professors that believes he can put theoretical questions on his test without going into theoritical detail in his lectures. Be prepared to do more than just his learning objectives in order to really get a good grade. Or just do what I did and get a low C in lecture and a high A in lab.
worst teacher ever!!! would not recommend....take at community college elsewhere and transfer over....he flies over lectures, has an accent and is not understanding to students concerns at all.....end up teaching yourself the material...so textbook is a must....def take elsewhere
NOT helpful in office hours, downright rude to students. Incomprehensible slides. Does not seem to want to teach. Read the book and learn in lab or else DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS.
I hate this professor! He assigns a lot of learning objectives for our exams to study from but only 10 of them out of like 120 are on the exam. A lot of his questions on exams are tricky and confusing. DEFINITELY TRY YOUR BEST TO TAKE THIS CLASS SOMEWHERE ELSE!!
he is a nice professor, but he just can't teach... the tests are extremely tricky... lectures are boring, and you have quizzes once a week at least... make sure to do well on those because you can't afford to lose points on quizzes... and do well on lab quizzes.. .they add up!
Defintly a very challenging class, but it's possible to get an A. Jus make sure 2 get perfect scores on quizzes (lab and lecture) and do all your assignments. Lab can really raise your grade because lecture tests are HARD! Study everything on the learning objectives even though he only asks about a few and bonus pts on tests can help a lot.
Dr. Zhang is not as bad as everyone think he is. Yes, he has a thick accent. Read the book! His lecture notes are based off from the book and look over the learning objectives before class. Take very good notes, he goes over all the learning objectives during his lectures AND lastly, take advantage of lab (it's half of you grade)
I like Dr. Zhang because he is a nice man and really cares about his students. He is always happy to answer your questions and he is so nice when he does. I have never seen him being mean or rude as what some students say-prob. just all hype. His lectures are clear and I always understand them. And his exams are not that bad as long as you study.
He gives very little respect to students. Do your study questions, read your text carefully, and attend every lecture... then you should survive.
He loves to put tricky questions on his lecture exams, and he absolutely LOVES giving random quizzes and in-class questions. The good thing is, the in-class questions are like free points (he tells you the answers right away). However, this means that you MUST MUST attend class EVERY DAY. Just study hard for the exams and you should be fine.
This profesor made for a terrible semsester. The questions on the tests are pulled from thin air, even though he insists that his learning objectives cover the material (yeah, right). Do everything you can to take this class at a community college and then transfer it.
seriously THE worst professor ever. the learning objectives are too much work, and he only chooses ONE question to put onto the exam out of like fourty! the comprehensive FINAL will kill you, therefore make sure you get As on the two midterms and an A in lab.. that is your only hope... if you don't then DROP THE CLASS
Dont be scared. If you actually pay attention to what he says, do the questions on the online textbook site (he takes a lot of questions from that site), and get an A in lab (which is very possible), then you should be alright. Listen to what he asks you to know for the test. Be encouraged - you CAN get an A.
Be prepared to not sleep at all!He makes you feel stupid when you go to his office hours-so no help there! He gives objective quest. that don't help on the test!He gives you 65 ques in a 50mins time period! He gives quizzes unannounced! He's slides don't help on the exams! He is not friendly, has a fake smile,& says "alright" too much!DON'T TAKE HIM!
If your a nursing major, my best advice to you all is don't take another science class with this one since he is the only professor teaching this class. If possible, TAKE MICROBIOLOGY SOMEWHERE ELSE! This class is more self taught! Learning objectives don't really help. This class is really time consuming. Study!Good LUCK and may the force b w/ u!!
the exams and the final were the most ridiculous tests i have ever taken. I have studied everything that was required and it still seems that every question was not taught at all.
Not joking when I say worst teacher I've EVER had. I took General micro at another school and got over a 100% in the class, which influenced me to become a Micro major(I love this stuff). After finishing his class, I can say he is horrible!! Half of tests are written answers that are very subjective. only 6 people(includ me)have above 80% in class
horrible teacher. makes the class harder than it needs to be and he's late a lot
if you manage to get into a jc micro class, do it. he is all over the place when he lectures, it's almost better to teach yourself and just go to class for quizzes and random bubbling in the scantrons that he does. he can be rude when answering a question, learning objectives don't help. do well in lab and other than that...just try for lecture
Sure the lecture part of this class can become difficult, not because the material is hard it is mostly because the way in which he phrases his questions on the test are tricky, BUT this class is EXACTLY based 1/2 on lecture pts and 1/2 on lab, and lab is EASY! My advice would be to get an A in Lab it can make or break your grade
Very difficult course, but probably one of the most fascinating classes I've taken thus far. His exams are VERY difficult, but he does curve and there are opportunities for points with HW assignments and whatnot. The lab for this class was SO much fun. Although exams are difficult, I would still recommend this professor..and STUDY!
Prof. Zhang is a great teacher and he is good at explaining concepts. His tests and quizzes are definitely hard, but they are not impossible. Lab is pretty easy, I'd recommend taking it on Tues/Thurs because you will have 12 pre-lab tests and sometimes they fall on dates with lecture quizzes, so it is more to study for.
2. 2 exams (220 pts) & 1 final (140 pts). 5 quizzes (50 pts-- 2 lowest dropped). He has the HARDEST tests ever. Lectures DON'T help. Learning Objs help INDIRECTLY. READ THE BOOK and STUDY on your OWN to just PASS his exams. 1000 pt class- half are in lab. Lab is easy! Get an A in lab. 2 lab exams (220 pts) and 1 lab final (140 pts).
3. 12 lab quizzes (2 lowest dropped: 70 pts). Quizzes are the SAME for every lab. 2 essays (20 pts), unknown project (50 pts), and presentation (20 pts). DON'T take Zhang for lab, any grad student should be fine. Lab is long; 6hrs/week. Don't slack off in lab; should boost your overall grade. Lab can be fun depending on who is in your group.
4. Class ISN'T easy, but he's FAIR with grading. He doesn't curve, but he actually gives free pts (54 pts this semester). Class is an EASY B! He curves an A down depending on how the WHOLE CLASS is doing! Highest grade this semester was 93%. Without the free pts, NO ONE would have gotten an A. Class ISN'T for the lazy. STUDY & BE RESOURCEFUL! ;)
very unfair. his lack of understanding of the basic English language reflects on his exams. he asks a clear question and when you give him a clear answer he says that is not the answer he is looking for. YES because he doesn't even understand his question. His grading is in -ve points and does not give partial credit nor does he curve.
lab will save you! make sure you get an A in it. The lecture exams were hard...mostly all of the above, non of the above, A and C, ect. type of answers so you really need to know it!
I find his exams to be stimulating. Not rote memorization but actual application. Nothing is wrong with his English. You have to make an effort to succeed! The labs are fun and they will definitely be a gift from heaven. He does give bonus points on exams. Be familiar with the learning objectives. The exams are directly or indirectly related!
Very hard class Class. It requires A LOT of time and effort. Spent about 50 hours per test on average.
he is very confusing. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! MOST OF the work is on your own. you are basically teaching yourself. he talks to the students as if he is talking to one of his professional micro buddies. does not know how to break down info.learning objectives are 30 questions per power point.impossible to get through all of them.NO STUDY GUIDE.
Tests are SUPER ABSTRACT. his tests are not subjective whatsoever and they are really detailed. He gives out way too many questions on the lab objectives and you barely get tested on the actual subject matter. Do good on the lab exams, those will definitely save you. But tough luck on the lecture exams, def wouldn't recommended the class.
he's a nice guy but his class, quizzes and exams are very hard. assignments are easy enough. you have to STUDY! reading the book and studying learning objectives are very important to passing. not impossible but good luck
If possible, avoid this class. Only 3 lecture exams but they are difficult to understand. Theres a million learning objectives and no study guide to the cumulative final. Lab will save you.
horrible. 3 tests about 7-8 chapters for the first 2 and the last test is cumulative final. Lab is way easier. Do well in Lab. It's possible to get an A if you REALLY work hard or if you're really passionate/interested in microbiology. I'd say if you can, get micro at a CCC because my friend got an A there compared to my C with Zhang -.-
For the quizzes refer to the power points, for tests refer to pictures from power points, learning objectives,& your book. His tests are all about piecing bits of information together. Most of his answers are A&B or all of the above =.=" I took this class while taking anatomy and it wasn't that bad. I got an A here and a B in anatomy. I loved lab.
This class is only hard because he's hard to understand and he wants you to know EVERYTHING for every test. EVERYTHING. he gives you 50 minutes to finish a 65 question test. Lab is really fun though; if you do well in lab and fail his test you can probably get a C. If you're shooting for an A, good luck studying EVERYTHING. Tests are super tricky
Very difficult class-50% of the class is lab points, which isn't too bad (I got 90%) the other 50% is lecture, where the 3 exams are very challenging and require complete knowledge of the subject. (Got 80% with extensive studying) Micro is interesting but Zhang makes it way too stressful. Tip: be sure to use the ppt, book, and in class notes
This class isn't as bad as what people make it out to be. Lab is fun, no doubt. Simple 2 page readings for quizzes. For lecture, online quizzes for every chapter, no time limit. His exams are extremely difficult due to memorizing the small details. Don't get hung up on ch. outlines, they're insignificant. Use it to organize your notes instead. GL!
I honestly didn't think this class was that bad. There's a lot of material, but Dr. Zhang's lectures are usually clear. Just take notes and make sure to answer &study the learning objectives. His multiple choice questions are difficult, but short answers aren't bad at all. Lots of extra points besides exams to boost your grade. An A is def doable
This guy is the worst one. He should not teach at school! He is wasting his students to spend time for lecture. Things that he asks on exams are above the standard what undergraduate should know. He'd better learn how to be a teacher first before teaching others. He does not work with people, only microbes.
WORST! Doesnt care. AVOIDS CLARIFICATION!!!! Who does that? SOMEONE WHO DOESNT CARE. TRIES TO SCARE YOU TRIES TO MAKE YOU FEEL STUPID, avoids clarification constantly. I looked him right in the face and asked him a question and he refused to answer it. WHY ARE YOU A TEACHER? Worst example of an EDUCATOR. Completely non caring trickster avoidant
He seems okay in class but when it comes to the exams he makes you memorize large quantities of unnecessary information then tries to trick the hell out of you in the TF or MC questions. Tried going to his office answers but made me feel very inferior and almost mocked me because I was confused. Labs are way easier so get a better grade there.
It's clear that he is knowledgeable on the subject. However, he is one of the worst professors I've had. He took over 3 weeks to reply to one e-mail and he made me feel dumb whenever I asked him questions. Highly recommend taking this at a different university if you can.
Go to class, read only the parts of the chapter he went over in lecture or in learning objectives, make a listchart of bacteria mentioned in class, hand draw and write out and label for each learning objective, read chapter and ppt notes BEFORE preclass quizzes (count for more than final), office hours aren't helpful ask in class, lab study groups
I read every chapter assigned and took notes on them, I also answered the learning objective questions. Study his powerpoints well. Tricky exam questions. I actually did better in lect than lab. If you put in the effort to study, you can earn an A! Good luck!
Professor Zhang is possibly one of the worst professors I have encountered in my college career. English is definitely his second language, so good luck deciphering his exams (bring a cipher). He definitely knows everything there is to know about the subject, however he is not able to teach it. Lab is your saving grace. Good luck.
Gird your loins because this class is going to be the worst thing that's ever happened to you. The content is incredibly fascinating and the professor is passionate. With that being said, its impossible to know howwhat to study and there's too much content to study all of it. Put a ton of time into lab. Work super hard on BB quizzes. Good luck!!
Zhang is not a bad professor. His English is perfectly fine. Lab is definitely easy so make sure you do well. This class has beachboard quizzes for each chapter so make sure you do them. He puts some of those questions, word-for-word, on the lecture tests so study them. Only 3 lecture tests, one of them is a cumulative final. An A is possible!
Lab assignments and tests are pretty easy, it's the lecture exams you need to be careful with. The lecture exams don't match a lot of the material taught. The class just felt like it was all over the place and I had no idea what was going on. Lab saved me, but this is easily the worst class I've ever taken.
worst teacher i've had. randomly posts quizzes on beachboard without notifying anyone (and they're insanely difficult for pre-quizzes). lecture exams are super detailed and designed to trick you. lab is ok. powerpoints are all over the place. syllabus is vague about grading. impossible to study everything. if you love yourself, don't take him.
-show up to lectures because he requires I clicker 2 -pre-lecture quizzes/ exams are worded unclearly -need to ask three times for a clear/concise answer (pretty much says everything, but the answer) -Lab will save you. Lab was straightforward and clearly explained.
Worst professor. His exam questions include options A, B, A or B, A B or C, all of the above, none of the above. He's narrow minded. His questions are worded poorly. If you explain how you interpreted his vague question to come up with your answer, he'll agree that you're correct but not give you credit because he only believes his way is right.
pre-lecture quizzes before almost every chapter, meaning you have to teach the content to yourself before he does. he's not very clear with his ideas or explanations. do every LO question he gives you, rewrite them a few times. that's how i got an A. you need to WORK for it. don't trust any of his quiz/test questions. theyre all trying to trick you
Do the learning objectives! If there's anything unclear with those, make sure you go to his office hours. He only has two midterms and one final. He has online quizzes;which can be filled with typos so if you think there are discrepancies with those, don't be afraid to let him know because he's willing to give credits. He requires iClicker.
Iclickers everyday, lab is the only way to pass this class so make sure you get every single point possible there, do whatever you can to not get him for lab, make sure you read relevant parts of the chapters, going over his powerpoints and learning objectives arent enough for the tests. Do whatever it takes to take this class at another school
fun class
500 points lecture, 500 points lab. Always attend lecture (iclicker participation points). He's a good lecturer- definitely knows the subject- & you learn a lot. Plus, microbio is interesting. Get the pre-lecture quizzes done the minute they are out! Use the book for these quizzes. Use his pp and lo to study for lecture tests. Be on top of things!
He's an amazing professor and I learned so much from him. Though he might be difficult, with the right amount of work its definitely doable! Make sure to keep with the quizzes and the homework and an A is definitely within reach.
Be prepared to not sleep at all!He makes you feel stupid when you go to his office hours-so no help there! He gives objective quest. that don't help on the test!He gives you 65 ques in a 50mins time period! He gives quizzes unannounced! He's slides don't help on the exams! He is not friendly, has a fake smile,& says alright too much! Repost
Inefficient at communicating to his students. Responds to Qs unrespectfully. My peers were frequently confused about his expectations. "Learning objectives" that attempt to outline each lecture are excessive and not useful towards the exams. Exam uestions are TRICKY, and test more for close reading than an actual comprehension of the material.
Lab is the only thing that was actually fun and will save your grade. I feel like lectures are very rushed and a lot of material you are tested on is too much to cram into two 50 min lectures a week. Learning obj are kinda helpful but only if you answer them in complete detail. Exams are super hard and tricky. Try taking this class somewhere else
DOES NOT help at all during office hours, lectures are tiring, thick accent, online prelecture and prelab quizes even though you could use a book, they were very tough. Exams are the worst, no study guide only learning objectives "could help". Lab was the only fun and easy part of this class but lab exams were pretty tough. Read and takes notes.
I took microbiology& anatomy @ the same time& everyone told me to drop one but I didn't bcause I needed to finish the sciences 4 nursing hardest 1 by far!I ended up with a B in both but u have 2 study everyday for both &have NO SOCIAL LIFE AT ALL!U have 2get an A in lab its ur life saver!I only studied his powerpoints&a little the book try to do LO
Does not go in to depth with lectures, can be very vague. There is too much information to memorize for the tests. The online quizzes need to be re written.
DO NOT TAKE! Very thick accent. Starts talking about one thing, continues with another, never goes back to explain first point. Exams/Quizzes are impossible, tries to trick you with A or D / AOTA answers. Attendance w/ iClicker. Quizzes before each class are open book and most of class still fails them. Had to drop bc couldnt handle teaching style
Go to class for iclickers, but most learning you have to do using the textbook. Be prepared for questions on the test that make no sense. Asking him to clarify wont help. Avoid him for lab if possible, the TAs who run the other labs normally are lenient and try to help give more points because they know how he is. Good luck, you need it.
I am a survivor of this class. When taking this class make sure you can are able to devote a lot of time to studying. Even though this class was hard, it was doable. Get a group that you can study with and do ALL the learning objectives. The material is interesting. I would suggest printing his lecture slides and sitting up front. Good luck
Dr. Zhang is literally amazing! I think people who think he is impossible just had a hard time adjusting. Given, it was difficult for me for the first exam, but past that point, it is just getting used to his tests. Once you find a group to study with, the class is so much easier! After the first exam "hump" it's pretty much just good study habits
This is a difficult class but any nursing student should be able to pass this class! You will have to put in lots of work but you can get an A. Lab is an easy way to get lots of points. Study learning objectives and slides for lecture exams. Study groups help a lot! His question wording is difficult but you'll adjust after taking some quizzes
1) DO read up heavily on the lecture slides (i.e be able to list several examples of bacterial evasion). 2) Retain the outlined information ON THE BOOK), which is not that hard since the book summarizes key points for you. Wording is TRICKY, pay attention, answers are technical. 3) Study for quizzes. I earned an A in this class doing these 3 things
Be ready to sacrifice your life bc this class will be your hell. Print notes bc he goes wayyy too fast, go to every lecture and bring i-clicker, do LOs as soon as you can, take S/I if available, make friends. Only way to survive this class is teamwork, you'll understand later on. Also as much as you know the info, his tests and quizzes are TRICKY!
I wish he wasn't the only professor that teach this class. He refused to answer my questions at end of lab multiple times. Definitely pick his favorite. His expectation is unclear. Learning objectives are too much and not necessarily helpful for each lab. It seems to me that his attention is not completely put into teacher but towards his research
You guys all really need to calm down. Microbiology is a hard subject in general and Zhang is very passionate about the subject. He may not be your best friend, but you actually learn well from him. The tests are very hard but he repeats a lot from the quizes. Lab will literally save your grade if you put a little effort it in.
i love this class so much best class of my life hands down
500 points lab, 500 points lecture. you will earn most of your points in lab. study the powerpoints and learning objectives. notes from lecture are critical and you should make a note taking system that works for you. take the quizzes in groups so the chance of failure is minimized and triple check your answers at least. microbio is a fun class!!!
Very thick accent and can't pronounce several words correctly, so it gets very confusing. His quizzes are outrageously difficult. Hate to ask questions because he immediately makes you feel stupid and second guess yourself. Very rude to students. Directions/Instructions are never clear. Horrible teacher for such a hard class already.
LITERALLY WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!!!!!! AVOID AT ALL COST! Biol 201 is hard as balls. Please save yourself while you can! I am an A student and I am STRUGGLING. Exams are horrible, only saving grace of this class is Stanley, our lab instructor.
Microbiology is a really tough class and he makes it even tougher. I think he is one of the worst professor I have taken in my life as a student. The grading criteria is so unclear. The pre-lab and pre-lecture quizzes are difficult. The tests are horrible too and he makes it harder to score good even if you are a good student.
REALLY TERRIBLE! He's very degrading towards students who asked questions. The class material itself isn't difficult at all (prob would've done better w/ a diff prof) but the way he words his questions on exams and quizzes are very confusing. I had him for lab & lecture and it was definitely HELL.
Do not take this class. He does not explain things at all. It's an into course but he expects you to have an expect level. He's very specific and nit picky about responses, expects you to remember everything, and to spell everything correctly or else no points. His ppts are full of text and he rushes through them. Our first exam covers like 10 ch.s
Avoid taking this class with Dr. Zhang at all costs if you would like to ever pass! Over 200 learning objectives for one exam and the final is cumulative. He rushes through slides and expects you to know every tiny detail he ever talks about. Reading weekly quizzes take 2h to complete and are worth less than 1% of your overall grade each. Horrible
Answer choices for exams and quizzes are made to trip you up: choices D and E are a combination of the previous choices or none of the above. Lecture exams are all mcq. Exams for lab are multiple stations where you observe, sometimes do a task and answer questions but it is all frq. Don't take him for lab if you want to pass. "Is this clear?"
The material is interesting and I learned a lot. However, the tests are needlessly complicated and don't reflect your true level of knowledge. You have to understand his tests and how he wants you to answer. Very difficult to get an A but possible. Writing assignments make up most of the grade so if you do badly on the tests you can still pass.
If he was bad before, he was worse during online learning. His teaching method is not focused on general understanding, but to a deeper research level. I don't know if this is a language issue, but he is not good at understanding his student's questions to the point where he can't answer something as simple as when an assignment is due.
I took Zhang for microbiology for nursing, man it was tough! Got an A in chem? You get an A here too. Good lectures, interesting prof, just very vague questions. MAKE SURE you look DEEP into questions. He focuses on your TEST-TAKING skills. I suggest raking SI class, go to office hours, STUDY GROUPS!! Make a lot of study guides on his lectures!!!!!
The tests were pretty hard, but there was a lot of other quizzes or assignments that evened out the grade. Zhang seemed like he wanted us to do well in his class.
Wish I'd realized that the tests don't matter as much as you think, got like an 81%, a 76%, & an 86% on the 3 exams, but then got mostly As on the many weekly quizzes and other assignments. So do the homework & other work! Wouldn't have survived w/out study groups & friends, we helped each other with the quizzes, etc. Very vague test & quiz Qs
Zhang is a very sweet man and I like how he always asked if anyone had questions throughout his lectures. Taking this class online was def to my benefit cuz he made a lot of things easier. Grading is weird, his quiz and test questions can be super hard and can be interpreted in diff ways. Tests were open note but many questions in a short time.
nice prof; vague & tricky questions on exams/quizzes but as long as u understand the concepts u can do well. prelec/lab quizzes have 3 attempts, unlimited time. can't emphasize the importance of STUDY GROUPS!! take stanley for lab, he's super chill
His class is taught in a very ineffective way & is WAY harder than it should or needs to be. You will have to do an at-home research project. Exams are very difficult & about 2 quizzes a week. There are also time consuming lab stimulations on top of lab. Probably will get a B in the class. Read textbook b/c lectures don't go in-depth & are rushed.
There's certainly a lot to cover in Microbiology, but cramming over 8 chapters into one exam is just not the way to go. The lectures are rather vague, so most of the learning will be done through the textbook. Tests are open notes but there's a short amount of time for many questions. The test questions are tricky like he wants to trip you up.
Im a 4th year and this is the hardest class Ive ever taken. He goes way to fast, gives no time to answers questions on exams, you basically teach yourself. This class can be taught in a much more efficient way like every other school. Ive never received a C in a class & I'm worried about passing this class. DONT take with zhang, take somewhere else
This class is based on 3 lecture exams, 3 lab exams, a research project, 1 presentation, a few small assignments, and weekly quizzes. His tests are unnecessarily hard. There are tons of tricky and multi-select questions yet you only get about a minute per question. He gave us 2 exams during the same week. Annoying how he's the only prof for biol201
STUDY GROUPS ARE GOING TO BE YOUR SAVIOR IN THIS CLASS! Can NOT stress this enough. Help each other out.
Professor Zhang is a very difficult professor. I do not recommend taking his class, unless you are VERY determined. His tests are incredibly difficult and he will not budge on giving you credit on test questions even though you may have selected a reply that is correct because it is not the answer he wanted you to put. Take microbio 201 a CC.
Please avoid this prof if u can. I'm warning u. He might give u 0 points for 1 mistake. He focuses on old papers. I don't know what's going on in this class and I feel like I'm learning nothing and just wasting time. Also, there's a presentation.
sweet man, but rushes through the lectures. trying to not skew this too much but class experience could have been better
dedicated professor, once you get over the fact that he has an 8 am lecture. cuts off material covered on the exam if he does not finish. STUDY GROUPS WILL BE YOUR SAVOR IN THIS CLASS. I don't think I would have survived on my own ngl
His class was tough but he's really into Microbiology. He holds office hours when you need him but doesn't really give much credit or curves when you want to fix something that was graded. He isn't rude but he hopes you try your best in his class.
If you can avoid this professor, PLEASE do. I would much rather take Chem140 again over this class any day. The exams barely ever made any sense. You can study as much as you want and a good chunk of the exam might still confuse you. If you ask me, his rating isn't low enough. AVOID him and save yourself the migraines. "Is this clear?"
He's honestly a nice guy and definitely does encourage you to do well. However there is a lot of quizzes you need to take which are online only but still worth half of your grade. The exams SUCK, they are open notes but if your notes aren't good then you won't do well. There are no study guides btw.
Pros - nice guy Cons - random long writing assignments, quiz due dates were unclear and unannounced. The tests were intense with some multiple-select questions containing 10 or more options. Grading criteria for free response sections was unknown and he graded hard. Get a study group ASAP. You can manage an A if you put in the effort.
nice guy, knows his stuff, but the class is HARD. you CAN pass with an A but you HAVE to study. having a study group/buddy will help a LOT. everything is open note, open slide, open book, but don't rely on it fully. you can survive with mediocre test scores as long as you do all the work and get decent scores in lab.
Professor Zhang's class is challenging, but engaging. The exams are tough, so staying on top of the material and forming study groups is crucial. Unstuck study AI can be a helpful tool for quick concept review and exam prep.
Man, this class was tough but not impossible. Focus on the lab exams as they were difficult, and the homework as that gives you easy points. Lecture exams are online (do with that what you will.) Got C's on the first two lab exams and an A on the final, and got B's on the lecture exams. Cool guy who is accessible to students!
past reviews scared me but it wasnt that bad take the other prof for lab. Got btwn 68%-75% on all 3 lecture exams tbh didnt study bc open note, but I did really well on the lab exams (btwn 88%-95%). Got 90-100 on all quizzes, those were easy. Just collect the easy points and dont worry about the lec exams. Got an A. Dont let other reviews scare u.
Cons: Lecture slides contain fragments of information and are impossible to study from. Lectures do not properly cover the material outlined on the slides, nor are they articulated well. Exam questions are MAINLY multi-select (NOT MULTIPLE CHOICE) with 7-12 choices. Writing assignments and group projects are sandwiched between exams. Pros: Nice???
professor zhang is probably one of the only professors that didn't help me learn at all. he doesn't provide a study guide for exams, and a lot of the questions are worded weirdly. i found not going to lecture can be more beneficial because i taught myself all the material and understood it better. bless your heart if you take him. "is this clear?"
Genuinely one of the worst professors I have ever had. Too much writing for a non writing intensive class. The amount of material covered and difficulty does not match a 300 lvl course. Why do we have to read like 10 textbook chapters to teach ourselves the material? What am I paying you for??? Why is every question 7-10 options of multi select???
He is not respectful AT ALL!! Our lab class would ask him a question and he would respond with attitude all the time. His lab exams are crazy! He just says to go "based off the slides" but he has more than 12+ slides full of information per lab. He uses the "repeat after me" technique, flies through his slides. DO NOT TAKE!
Continually disrespectful of your time by showing up to class late and going over lecture time. Don't have an 8am class if you can't make it. An overload of work he expects you to do as if this is the only class you are taking. Absolutely THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER.
course was pretty difficult but some of these ratings are overly harsh, don't let them scare you! not the best lecturer but everything is taken online including the final. overall, if there are other options take them but if not, not the end of the world. as long as you try you will pass. it's pretty impossible to fail his class
DOES NOT ANSWER EMAILS!!!! Is always late to class, takes awhile to grade while expecting we turn in work with little time, exams are excessive (every question being 5-10 multiselect plus essay questions), does not understand student questions, INDEPENDENT READING OF 15 CHAPTERS, always goes over lecture time. Please hire more professors.....
He is a bit difficult but the class isn't too bad, you really don't have to go to lecture often but definitely make it to each lab ! Prepare to study hard on lab exams. Good luck
