AMAZING professor
It is rare to find a prof that takes so much time with his students. An amazing teacher who cares about student learning. It will be hard to find a comparable prof.
Dr. Savelli is very interesting to listen to and you can tell that he is really interested and passionate about what he is teaching about. He is very approachable and has no problem working around his schedule to see you one-on-one if you can't come to his office hours. Easy-ish grader and had very few tests (just the midterm and the exam).
"Respectful/open-minded + Absolutely brilliant". Delivers a multifaceted approach to understanding mental illness by discussing Western and non-Western perspectives; he presents critiques of both dimensions that (hopefully will) ultimately enlighten students in the non-objective nature innate to studying health (and many other topics). Mind-blown
Great professor. So passionate, intelligent, and interesting. This class is really worth taking, especially for anybody interested in the subject matter. Dr. Savelli's attitude makes the class even more fun and getting a good grade is not hard at all. Not to mention, he is pretty good looking (which is nice).
Dr. Savelli is my favourite professor at McMaster. I am so happy that I decided to take his class. He is extremely understanding, wanted his students to excel and was always there to help. He made sure we all understood course material before moving on, and he is extremely inspirational. Lectures are interesting and engaging. I definitely reccomend
By far one of my favorite professors and classes at Mac. Dr. Savelli's lectures don't even feel like lectures since he tries his best to convey all of the material in an interesting and relevant manner, and successfully does so! Also, his assignments allow you to actually choose whichever topic you prefer as there is a lot of options.
Savelli is by FAR my favourite prof at MAC. Not only is he absolutely hilarious and relaxed with his dry sense of humour... he is extremely passionate about what he teaches. His classes are ALWAYS interesting. Doing well isn't difficult, but go to lecture. He is brilliant. Looking forward to taking classes he teaches is the future!
Not only is Professor Savelli a great dude, he has been honestly everywhere in the world and he mentions his stories when he lectures. He makes the class interesting, not to mention he is a HOT TAMALE! I love listening to him lecture, taking his next course for both reasons.
I had Savelli for a spring course, I really enjoyed the way he taught. Analogies lectured made students really understand the topics. I agree with the comment before, he does incorporate his past, which are some great stories as he mentions how he lived almost all over the world. Really respect his care for his students and lectures. Recommend!
One of the best professors I've had at Mac,his class was extremely interesting and actually changed my perception about mental health and this course made me more open-minded. I had him during the summer so I'm not sure if he always does this but he literally had 8 office hours a week instead of the usual 1, really wanted to help his students.
Overall, he's a really chill guy. One of the best lecturers at Mac. His course is super interesting and knowledgable, a must for anyone thinking about going into psychology/psychiatry. Although going to lectures isn't mandatory to pass since he posts slides online, he does verbally say things during lectures that are testable material.
Really interesting course, not assignment heavy. All lecture slides are posted online, but I would recommend still attending since he gives amazing lectures, and some of what he says is testable.
Amazing professor! The way he delivers his lectures is beyond amazing, you can just go to lecture and understand the content very well as he explains everything in a way you just remember. Pretty funny and chill! Any course he teaches I will take!! 10000000% recommended taking any of his courses!
Overall, an interesting class but it is not bird course... really have to understand the material to do well!
Dr. Savelli is by far my favorite professor at McMaster. His lectures are incredible and engaging, and he really applies the material to real life in order for you to understand it. He cares deeply about his students and it really shows. Tests were pretty straightforward and easy to do well on. Lecture slides and readings posted online as well.
Dr. Savelli is one of the best profs I've ever had. He cares so much about what he's teaching and genuinely wants his students to succeed. He talks about his life and own experiences to help you understand the concepts better. He's a super chill guy. Lectures aren't mandatory but he makes them worth going.
He's the smartest, kindest man in the world. Also super cool and interesting. Tells good stories, commands the attention of the group, makes everyone laugh. I hope I can take another course with him!! I LOVE MAT
GREAT prof, easily one of the best in my experience at Mac. Lectures are never dull as he will tell stories, jokes, and prompt class discussion. Dr. Savelli offers a plethora of office hours and would even meet you at 1280 if you seriously couldn't make it to the drop-in times. So relatable and genuinely cares for his students' success.
Such a pretentious prof. He gives horrible feedback, confuses you and doesn't test you on the majority of important slides. He is a decent lecturer and is knowedgeable, but his lack of explanations assures that I will never take a class from him again.
The absolute worst prof at Mac. He is nice as a person, great to talk to in office hours and a good lecturer. But his tests, assignments, and quizzes are unfair as they stray heavily away from course content. Multiple choice questions are tricky and unclear. Some essay questions on the exam dealt with content unrelated to the course.
First time taking class with Mat, interest in mental health and was thoroughly impressed. Very engaging (considering it was a night class), lecturing style is interactive and very fluid, well-rehearsed in his research and knowledge of course content. Assessments are fair, enjoyed how much I learned and the new understanding I have for addiction
Savelli's the bomb! Literally no other way to put it, 10/10 would recommend.
AMAZING! Favourite prof for many students at Mac, cares a great amount for his students. Great lectures and slides, he is HILARIOUS and you can easily follow his explanations, influenced my career path towards addiction studies. Doesn't make his students buy books (usually) relies heavily on articles
total gem but the essays and tests are tough
Best prof at mac
Great prof! Really made me think about mental health and illnesses. Very thorough and informing lectures.
Best prof I've ever had... I would marry him
amazing
He has good personality when he lectures. Makes it helpful when I am in his 3 hour time block at night time. Really enjoy his energy and you can tell he is a very personable and intelligent man.
honestly savelli was a cool dude and knows his content inside out, but his tests were brutal. his lectures (which was the only place course content was from as textbook was useless) would teach you some basic info but his tests would go on about info you have never heard of in your life. only did well cus cousin was a 3rd year psych maj and helped
Savelli is by far the best prof I've ever had! I've never felt so engaged in lecture before and he really changed my understanding of mental health. He is very passionate, kind, down to earth, and cares about his students. He also has a witty sense of humour, not to mention he's quite charming, and nice to look at.
Fantastic class. Loved the content from start to finish. Definitely take more of his classes in the next few years.. only downfall was I got easily distracted by his fine asssss #daydreaming
This prof is very good at explaining mental health and the issues surrounding it. It completely changed the way I thought of mental health and my perception towards people who suffer from mental illness. The lectures are very informative and interesting, and the assignments are not difficult if you pay attention to lecture material and readings.
Savelli is the best professor I have ever had! He is the funniest guy and can always make the lectures interesting. I would 10/10 recommend him! I wish I could have him for all of my classes. I never leave his class stressed out. Having him as a professor is by far my favourite part of my program. I don't have a single bad thing to say about him!
He is a very knowledgeable prof. Knows how to make the content interesting, knows his stuff, makes it relateable and can be funny at times. His tests are definitely not easy breezy, you definitely gotta know your stuff, but they're doable!
Dr Savelli is really one of the best profs I have had so far in my years at Mac. It is clear that he is really investing in teaching and ensuring the success of his students. His lectures are interesting and he's very witty, which makes him very likeable. His tests and quizzes are sort of tricky... You really have to know the content to do well.
Was a good prof and his M/C was pretty straightforward once you got used to his style of teaching. Lectures were engaging.
Really funny guy and cares and knows a lot about what he's talking about. But you need to listen and remember everything he says in class because it's going to come back to haunt you later on the exam. Plus there isn't a real textbook so you really can't doze off... although he's entertaining enough to keep you listening.
He is an amazing professor, and very easy to listen to during lectures. One of those professor's you will actually learn from, and remember what he has taught you years later.
Love him
He is very smart! Approachable and easy to talk to.
Savelli is one of my fave profs as he has great lectures. Ive taken HLTHAGE1CC3, HLTHAGE2CC3 & HLTHAGE2EL0 & will take more. His slides have a good outline but you need to hear what he has to say along with it. It's hard to understand slides alone at home. But his pace is great, its easy to take down the slides & add what he's saying as well.
the hardest class ive ever taken! his tests are so hard, majority of the class failed this year so he had to curve everyone! he makes his m/c very hard and complex. i typically get above 75%s on my papers and tests but in this class it was such a difficult challenge to get even a 60% on certain tests and assignments! dont take it!!
His class is very enjoyable, love the way he teaches, it forces you to stay focused as a lot of it the important information is said verbally. His tests are kind of difficult, everything is always cumulative which does make sense with the content that is learned, but also difficult. Overall, enjoyed lectures, tests difficult.
Doesn't record lectures or post full notes online, definitely recommend attending as many lectures as you can.
if you dont go to class and dont type every word he says, you'll fail.
Personally, it was a waste of time for me to take the course. Tough grader and a lot of readings. If you want an easy A do not take.
So here's the thing. Savelli is an an amazing lecturer. Content and delivery super interesting and you won't find yourself dozing off. HOWEVER, the quizzes/test are not simply by any means. I've never had a problem with M/C format before, but I truly felt screwed over in this class. I read reviews here earlier about how his tests are tricky but WOW
He's a great prof! Very interesting, and the lectures are very entertaining but my GOD the TA said he rarely gives grades even in the 80s. So beware if you're looking for a good grade
loved his personality and his lectures, was one of the classes i never missed. highly recommend taking any of his courses hes great
He's an amazing lecturer. Although, if you want to pass you have to go to class because his powerpoint is only the basics. He tests you on what he says in class.
An amazing professor with super interesting lectures. GO TO CLASS, TAKE NOTES, AND STUDY!! Don't complain about his tests being hard if you aren't willing to go to class or study.
People, if you want to be challenged but incredibly inspired and mind boggled, take this class. Its hard. If you do not go to class and participate regularly you will not do well. He makes this clear. but the discussions MAKE you want to participate. If you are interesting in mental illness + art (movies music books etc) don't miss out!
Excellent professor, highly recommend. Barely any readings, and his tests are very fair
Dr. Savelli was my best professor during my first semester at Mac. The course itself was interesting, but his knowledge and personal experiences with the content made it that much more enjoyable. I never missed a lecture, and I am glad I didn't! He made a 3 hour night class worth it. You have to get used to his tests, though.
I don't recommend taking this as a bird course, but I do recommend taking it as your PIC. Both the lectures and his course are kinda interesting, but you have to attend all lectures as his notes are very bare-bone. Workload is quite heavy as you have to also read long articles he posts every week. Only take it if you're interested in mental health.
Dr. Savelli's passion truly comes out in lectures. He constantly tied in the big picture and I left the course feeling able to have real life conversations about the concepts. He is engaging, humerous, and shows he cares about students and their mental health. The tests and exam are lecture based but the text is helpful in relating to real life.
Dr. Savelli is a dedicated prof who truly cares about his students' knowledge. He always stresses he doesn't want to make everyone into a psychiatrist, he is more concerned about knowledge of CONCEPTS. Think outside the box. Find similarities and USE it through all issues introduced in the course.
The content of the course was interesting and the discussions as lectures were either a hit or miss (informative or just confusing). Although the overall course was okay, the grading was terrible. There is no clear rubric for any of the assessments and many of the TA's marked really hard. The feedback was very vague. Not a grade booster at all!!!
Tell me how I am in fourth year and decided to take this as a bird course and it is the only class I am getting a C in like PLEASE how is this first-year course is bringing my average down???? but he's a funny guy so
If you aren't super interested in learning about mental health, then his classes can be challenging. His tests are marked hard, most people struggle with them. Essays are also marked hard, and he doesn't give good outlines; you have to just guess what they want you to cover. He is a good lecturer though, and a very nice guy!!
Dr. Savelli gives great lectures! He is obviously very passionate about the content and he knows his stuff. He's also very funny! However, you have to be sure that you are also interested in the topics and be sure to do lots of studying because his tests are quite difficult. Awesome prof, great courses, hard tests
There were 2 parts to the lectures which ended up being way longer than 2 hours a week. Every week he uploaded a powerpoint for us to copy then posted a call with a mental health professional, but he always cut them off and mansplained for them which was really painful to watch. The grading was super hard, but it also depends on your TA.
Every class was a struggle not to roll my eyes. He has no qualifications in psychology (he is a self-proclaimed 'mental health' historian) & it's obvious as he cherry-picks which disorders are 'real' enough & talks about mental health like your typical high school guidance teacher. Lectures are lame; just dense slides & him interrupting guests...
He's really funny but if you want to get anything above an 80 in this class, good luck!
Great class. The powerpoint he posted every week were quite text heavy, which wasn't too fun taking down notes as it could take a while. However, quality material and effective when teaching, also posted discussion with mental health workers. 3 tuts were mandatory but were just discussions and very open. Tests/assignments are all essay-based.
Worst class, no rubrics, little feedback, your whole grade is based on 3 assignments
Savelli is a fantastic professor! His classes do require a lot of critical thinking but that's the point of learning. The content is fascinating and incredibly valuable when you begin to apply it to your life. All the bad reviews are likely upset that he makes students actually work for their grade, he doesn't just want us to memorize info.
taking online 1CC3 class during the spring semester is the worst decision I've ever made. no lecture at all (only discussions with professionals) just reading ppt/textbook/extra reading materials by yourself. no test or quiz or m/c question. three papers evaluate your learning, each worth 30%ish. don't choose this course, RUN when you still can
Tests are unreasonably hard and the powerpoints are really lengthy. Essays are marked really hard and don't have good outlines.
He obviously knows what he is talking about and really really enjoys it. For someone who just wants an easy class and thought Mental Health would be it, your wrong. This classes lecture is heavy and the readings need to be done in order to do well on the tests. Essays are a little vague with instructions but not to bad. Tutorials are fun though.
This course is very interesting. I looked forward to doing the lectures each week. There was a discussion with a professional, textbook reading, and powerpoint (no lecture) each week. Savelli does not give clear grading instructions/no rubrics. The TAs mark off the 'Grading Manifesto' and are not generous with marks. Tough but interesting.
Do not take this class if you are looking for a bird class. The TA's mark quite hard and are not generous when it comes to tutorials or essays. The midterm wasn't that easy either. The lectures are basically just discussions. Not looking forward to the exam.
This class was one of my favourites first year. His Midterm and exams were an essay and they were fairy easy. His lectures are not him reading straight off the slides. he interviewed people and talked about the topic which was more interesting to watch. The content is amazing and very interesting. If ur considering this course take it for sure!
I actually don't attend Mac anymore but I had him in 2016 and let me tell you, this man can teach. His content and lectures were always very interesting. He would walk around instead of reading off the slides, which showed he really knows his stuff. I've had so many Profs since then but he is the most memorable and definitely the best prof I've had
Has an interesting approach to teaching. He has no clear grading criteria which makes it difficult for students and we are told to instead look at feedback from previous papers, but the feedback is always vague. He also is poor at answering questions. Most people that took this class struggled/didn't do well, if you can avoid this class do it!
i do not respect this professor. one week in and i have already had to fight for my accommodations which he refused to accept on certain deadlines. for a mental health and illness professor, accessibility seems to be his last priority. lectures are just rewords of the textbook. mansplains. i would not recommend this course.
Savelli tries to appears as though he likes teaching but I think that this mentality only extends to the students that swoon over everything he has to say. When asked concrete questions about the assignments he gets defensive and angry. Enjoyed the classes but did not feel supported in learning when I needed it.
Personally, I loved Savelli. He was pretty tough but honestly mental health and health fields, in general, shouldn't be easy to pass. I've never had him in person, but I think he does online very well, the slides are informative but heavy and the readings are pretty heavy too, but he kind of makes up for it by posting one lecture a week. Great guy!
For a mental health and illness professor, his policies were really not accessible. Gives low grades with vague and unhelpful feedback, and it feels like the grades are given just for the sake of being low. Mansplains and often dehumanizes people with mental illness in the way he talks. crigne as he'll
only been in class for 5 weeks but its good so far
This is my 4th time having Dr. Savelli. He's okay, but his lectures are irrelevant in terms of what is actually tested/graded. He plays devil's advocate over every little thing, probably just to impress all the girls who worship him. You finish class feeling like you didn't really learn anything. And don't get me started on the Grading Manifesto...
Teaches in a very easy to follow and clear style. Obvious he is very knowledgeable in what he's teaching. Not too many assignments but lots of opportunities to do well.
Favourite professor at Mac! Amazing lecturer
Best prof at Mac. Take all his courses if you can.
I find the content he teaches fascinating, but he's not my favourite person. Refuses to accept my accommodations despite teaching a course about mental health, had to fight for them. I guess he just thinks mental illness is just a way of deflecting personal responsibility, considering the critical perspectives he takes on the subject.
This course is specific to Health and Society. It is really interesting and my favourite course this semester. The grading isn't too hard if you're passionate in what you are writing about. No exams except a major paper worth 65% of your grade. The lecture itself only has about 50 kids in it and he learns your name so it kinda feels like a hs class
Honestly, this class was pretty good and learning from him was amazing, I have no issues with his teaching style. I do wish lectures could be recorded or accessed on avenue so go back and listen to them, most of the readings were easy to know by discussion in tutorials. Overall, I'd totally retake this class it was better than my mandatory classes
Dr. Savelli's lectures were fantastic. The class was very interesting but I found it coincidental that he stressed the notion that "grades don't define you" yet out of all my classes from my semester I got the lowest grade in his course even though it was the class I put the most time and effort into. I found the grading unnecessarily difficult.
Unless you are in STEM, Health Sci, or really any science-related program, this course is not for you. I took it because the description sounded interesting, but I was immediately proven wrong after experiencing the heavy lectures, extensive readings from his own textbook, and the lack of feedback provided.
He is a great professor in terms of expanding deeply on course content. This course was eye opening and super impactful. However, some topics can be triggering and he can come off as insensitive. He is a hard marker but overall I really loved this course.
his lectures are okay, fairly interesting if you want to learn about mental health but the grading is ridiculous and he only uses his own textbook so it seems verrryyy pretentious. makes it so you can't msaf anything in the class
Had him first year, first semester, which I wouldn't recommend if you need a high first-year average. That said, he is an engaging lecturer, receptive to questions, and the content is critical thought-provoking and interesting. Tough marker, but feedback is consistently good. Don't just write what you think he wants--develop your OWN opinions.
It was very clear that Savelli thought his opinion was the correct one; he even made a major assignment based on his own textbook, with no outside sources allowed. However, while I was not expecting the content, the class did help me to think critically. I probably wouldn't take a class by him again, but you should form your own opinion on him.
Lecture content was always very interesting. Unfortunately, the course has a tendency of being very black and white. To achieve a high grade in the course you must agree with his perspective. Attending lectures and doing the readings is a MUST. Dr. Savelli can occasionally come across as insensitive, however I don't think this is intentional.
His lectures were structured in a clear, easy-to-follow format, and it made it easy to take organized notes. He is, however, a somewhat rude and unapproachable person. I enjoyed his lectures, found them interesting, and found that he presented the information in an easily digestible manner. The grading in his course is also somewhat tough
he's going to open the first class with "don't copy down what's on the slide, focus on what i'm saying instead, the slides are just reminders". he is Lying. you have to write down what he's saying as well as what's on the slides!! so unnecessarily difficult, do not like this class, do not like him, avoid if u can, etc. courses are interesting tho!
This guy was favoured by a lot of students, and I agree that he was a good lecturer. However, he's taken a turn and his classes have become incredibly difficult to succeed in. 2 years ago I would've suggested him, but today, I would avoid taking his class at all costs. The anxiety is not worth it.
This is one of the strictest profs at MAC. I took his course as an elective with a friend because we were told he was a great prof and the syllabus looked manageable but this was my biggest regret in undergrad. It is impossible to succeed with him and I hated going to his classes every week. I have 11 and 12 all my classes, this one was a mess.
He's the best!
I always attended lectures even if I wasn't taking notes because he makes the material seem interesting. However, the lecture is basically just the textbook being spoken aloud, so if you can't make it to the lecture then reading the chapter assigned for that day is the same if not better. Not allowed to have tech in tutorials tho, only handwritten.
Dr. Mat Savelli is a wonderful prof, but you need to be willing to put in the work... Make sure to come to lecture and do your readings!!!
Dr. Savelli is an excellent lecturer, and prompts students to think about issues in complex ways. He will learn your name, treat your ideas with respect, and challenge you. Really funny guy too.
Wonderful person and fab lecturer. Rly cares abt students. Def a hard grader and "will not give out grades like candy" but if you DO THE READINGS, SHOW UP, and participate, you'll be okay. He's lovely to talk to and his feedback is incredibly detailed and key to doing well in the course. You just have to apply yourself, he can tell when you don't.
Amazing professor. Definitely not an easy course but if you show up to the lectures, take notes and do the occasional reading you'll do fine. I also really enjoyed the tutorials which you'd get an automatic 100% on if you even spoke one word within the hour long period (tutorial participation was weighted at 10% I believe).
Really engaging lecturer, the material is dense and complicated but presented in a way that feels very intuitive. Take lots of notes! Also, participation is an easy 10% and all you have to do is force yourself to talk in tutorial, which sucks, but definitely worth it.
Best prof I have right now, the explanations that go in hand with the slideshows go very in depth and Savelli makes the content very easy to understand
Dr. Savelli is an outstanding lecturer. He's so well spoken and is very engaging to listen to. The content is fascinating, and has really changed the way I think about mental illness. Furthermore, he's a really nice guy who is always up to chat in office hours! If you're intimidated by him- don't be! He likes when students ask him questions a lot.
w mat savelli my goat I recommend his classes 💯
Literally all lectures In person. No extra bonus marks. My TA also sucks for this class so like obviously my grades gonna be mid.
Lectures were really interesting. Attendance not mandatory per se but I recommend going because not everything he says are in the ppts, and lectures are not recorded. Grading for me was a little tough but it depends on your TA.
Savelli is easily a favourite prof; he's very funny and lectures are engaging. Classes are usually exam heavy, which you can do well in if you do the readings and attend lecture.
Lectures are super interesting+ he answers questions during class if things aren't clear. He is also really funny and you can tell he cares about the content he teaches. Lectures aren't recorded but if you do the readings + look at slides you'll be fine. Worst part is how many midterms there are but overall I would 100% take his class again.
Professor Savelli's lectures are engaging, though he can come across as blunt at times. The course content is thought-provoking, but the grading is quite tough. Using unstuckstudy alongside the textbook helped me succeed.
Pay attention to feedback and learn from it. If you listen, your writing skills and critical thinking will improve a lot. He gives amazing lectures that are really insightful, a great introduction to the social science world and university. He clearly knows what he's talking about. Just think before raising your hand.
Has very strong views that are controversial
Such a funny and entertaining guy, course content was very interesting and course breakdown was fair. Midterms consisted of two parts; multiple choice & essay, and the questions were very fair. Definitely taking another class with Savelli
He's a good lecturer. However, its really hard to do well with him. My grades regarding the test papers are not not as high as I would like, which is a bummer because the class itself is interesting. I don't think I can take any of his classes in upper years, my grades matter and I don't think the anxiety is worth it.
he was very great. he was funny and made the class very interesting.I had him for mental health and illness which was such a great course and the way he taught content was perfect for my learning style. I found him very funny, and his teaching style was very entertaining. The course itself was a little difficult, but he made it manageable.
Second class of him I take. Hard but extremely interesting.
INCREDIBLE course and professor. Savelli is insanely knowledgable and definitely knows what he is lecturing about. Textbook is there to purchase but honestly not necessary to read extensively, most info comes from lectures so def take notes. Course was so good I almost considered switching my major, def take it if the description interests you!
I enjoyed Savelli's lecture, though I found that the course description was a bit misleading and the content was focused on a lot more history than I would have thought. He is a pleasant and engaging lecturer. His midterms and exams are all essay style so be prepared for that and participation is important for tutorial.
Dr. Savelli gives interesting lectures and it made me think about the course outside of hw or class. The 50 mins goes by quick because of how engaging he is and midterms are straightforward. He has a funny dry sense of humour which also adds to the lectures. Oh also mosaic has 3 lecture slots, but he only uses 2 of them.
Dr Savelli is a fantastic professor. I have taken 3 HLTHAGE classes with him, with 2GG3 being my favourite. Consistently strong, unbiased lectures while acknowledging when he might not have made something clear. He expects that students work hard. Lectures are fascinating, you'll consider mental health and it's relationship to society differently!
Savelli is the freakin GOAT. So funny, incredibly knowledgeable, and a crazy good lecturer. Not to mention he's kinda fine…
The class content itself was super interesting but the formatting for the class was not the best. For the midterms and exams he did not give any practice questions for students to prep which can cause some anxiety. The tutorials are worth too much of your grade so if you are shy I wouldn't recommend.
Lectures were kind of boring, minimally engaging and were not recorded, wasn't straight forward what exactly to study for the midterms or exams which made them pretty difficult. Grade came from long answer midterms/exam and tutorial participation which meant it was fully dependent on your TA so you got to get lucky with who you get (I didn't)
Professor Savalli is an amazing lecturer, really knowledgable and blunt about the information he presents to you. He really made me try harder than ever before to get that B+. His TAS are tough graders, and there is a heavy reading load in his classes, but overall the knowledge gained is worth it! Wish he taught 3rd year classes!
Savelli's lectures are very engaging and interesting. That being said, his grading is very tough.. attendance & participation is super important for tutorials. Tutorials are every other week. do the required reading (or read a summary) before going into tutorials, you are expected to discuss it ( a little more intimidating if you're shy).
Super good and engaging prof. Genuinely love his lectures. Definitely a very tough grader, but would retake the course in a heartbeat regardless. Many course concepts are super applicable to understanding society and would 100% suggest just as a life skills course.
His focus on critical psychiatry & the dismissal of the biomedical model is thought provoking but does not show the complete story of psychiatry or mental healthcare, which can be difficult to navigate writing his exams. There is an over-emphasis on social construction that makes you question a lot about the sociology of mental healthcare.
He is very passionate about what he teaches, which makes the content very interesting. I took the course to learn about mental health and illnesses; however, the course was more centred around the question, are there really all of these distinct mental illnesses, or are all of these disorders the same thing with different names?
two midterms and one exam, all essay-style; can be hard to adjust to the first time. Material itself is not hard; if anything, you have to make connections between them and understand the overall themes.
