Lively, bright, and entertaining. Take any class he teaches!
Parker is the man. He's one of the smartest, eccentric, organized, and animated teachers here. His classes are great.
very good prefessor. gives good notes and is very interactive. However, his problem is that his exams are way too difficult for us.
Great teacher to take, especially for lab courses
What a cute little man!! I would have done better had I worked harder but the class itself was good. Made it as interesting as he could.
he is a jerk! very mean and unhelpful, very sarcastic and hes such a smug. please save yourself and dont take his class....
The only Bio class I looked foward to going to my freshmen year. That's saying a lot cause I hardly went to class my freshmen year.
Great teacher. One of the few at this school who seem like they are here for teaching and not just research. Seems to love teaching, which makes the class really interesting. Tests are pretty hard though, but if you learn his notes you should be fine.
One of the best teachers i have ever had. very clear.
His lectures are both thorough AND very interesting! He shows very helpful film about examples in understanding the biological concepts. He is one of my favorite professors =)
He is really a great lecturer, but his tests are rediculously hard. You need to read the textbook.
Lectures are not bad, tests are so extremely hard. Went to him for clarification of a previous test and was very rude, mean, and not willing to help. Seemed as though it was an inconvenience for me to be asking questions.
kind of boring, but not as bad as clark or stein. shows videos often so you have time to relax. test was hard, but it was the firstone of the semester. just read the textbook thoroughly
I have taken MANY science courses and I think he is one of the best. He is SO clear about what he says and he is funny! I am so glad that I had him as one of my professors for biology. His exams are not hard if you read the textbook and study the notes!
Best prof of all the 117 team. His lectures are somewhat more interesting than the others, and his notes are good also. He can teach. The "Stuttering Scientist" is very helpful, too.
Really hard tests. Doesnt seem to care about his students.
This guy deserves extra honors for making a class like bio fun and interesting.
If it weren't for this man I would have failed biology. Great sense of humor, interesting lectures, very hard tests but not impossible. Great lecturer.
His lectures were very easy to follow and the material seemed clear. Unfortunately his tests are hard so know your stuff!
Excellent professor, excellent course. Not too difficult. Required a bit of studying to do well on the exams, but not extensive amounts.
Excellent Class! Even thought I'm not a bio major, I enjoyed the material and lectures. Parker antics are the main reason. Test are hard, but doable. Do well on lab and study notes and text.
Lectures are unclear. Notes are not well-written. Tests are extremely hard.
He is the most schitzo personality around academia....a real "know-it-all". Probably insecure due to his tiny size. Does not make himself available for office hours or to help.
this man is frustrating. he has this ability to NOT connect with you when you are talking to him one on one...will just blow you off. he's the type of professor who knows TOO MUCH and can't teach at all. awful person and teacher.
Tests are ridiculously hard!! DO NOT take this class
good professor. his lecutures are very clear and i love his video clips. exams are very hard. you must study to pass them. i don't recommend this class for those who are not good with memorization or if you are just plain lazy.
His lectures were fun but exams were exteremely hard. Other 2 teachers of this course are even monotonous and purely bad. That makes test a big struggle.
Best lecturer of the three. He speaks fast but it is easy to understand him. He gives wonderful lectures and explains everything in detail. Tests are very hard and you have to study ALOT! Always makes sure everyone understands topics before continuing.
good teacher. he has nice notes and make things easier to understand. Reading the book before lecture helps alot too.
Lectures are interesting if your pre-med major. Notes in class help alot. Teachers crack not so funny jokes, that makes then funny. Tests are extremely hard if you don't know what you are doing. If you read the book and notes 3 times andunderstand everything, youll get a B or higher on the tests.
Class just sucks, nothing else to say
This class is incredibly hard. The professors are amazing, especially within their designated areas, but the material is just difficult and hard to learn. Do not take this course for the lab, I repeat: DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE FOR THE LAB.
What is up with this man? He's got a peculiar accent and sounds like everything is obvious. The material's not difficult but he teaches it like it is. I didn't like how he wouldn't shift his recent notes up on the elmo, instead he just took them off so you couldn't copy them. It was ez i gotan a
He's a very nice professor. he explains things well, but make sure u read the book cuz most of the things on the exams come from the reading assignments.
great proffesor i'm taking another class with him next semester.
Energetic man, good lectures. Tests are difficult.
Very good lecturer and a funny guy. He made the material interesting. The test were ridiculously hard though. Last class exam average was a 59.
he was the best of the three lecturers and his notes were very clear and organized. although he seemed very anxious and jumpy, he seemed to enjoy teaching the material. his questions on the test were the most straightforward out of the three professors.
Great lectures, with excellent notes. Tests are VERY HARD, sometimes stuff not covered in class or the text is on the test, or he'll say he'll give you all the formuls's and fail to list them all on the exam that are NEEDED for the exam.
Tests were EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AND TRICKY! Class was interesting, but the professor made it more of a nightmare than it needed to be. TA was a complete moron to say the least. Not a class to take if you want a good grade
waste of time and crazy hard tests do not take a class with this man.
personally, i thought the information was interesting, although the lectures can put you to sleep. if you pay attention in class, it's not hard to pass the exams. the TA is really no help though, he doesn't know anything about the material.
thought it would be one of the easier upper level bio. the class was semi-interesting but final exam was insane. between ecology and this class, id say take ecology...at least that class was more interesting
The worst prof ever. Is never in the office at the timings listed as office hours, very curt, and exams SSSSUUUUCCKKKK. The TA is a nice guy but not helpful when it comes to course material.Avoid this class at all costs
Insanely hard tests! The book is worthless bc you cant learn anything from it for the class. Just basically know everything even if it wasnt covered in class or in the text. TA was nice but not very helpful. Avoid if you can, or take if you like to be driven crazy
He is boring and a very hard tester. Don't take a course with him unless your can not avoid it.
very nice guy, good teacher, makes lecture interesting, tests are hard but do-able
For an intro course, his lectures were very interesting. He's always enthusiastic about the material, and knows what he's talking about. His tests can be pretty specific though, especially regarding specific information, so make sure you learn the specific examples from the reading in addition to the general concepts.
This class was absolutely rediculious, the test material is not clear at all. Avoid at all costs, I made a huge mistake in taking it..
He is a very good professor I would recommend taking his class. The topics are very interesting and he is extremely knowledgeable. Read the text and you'll do fine on the tests.
Parker is not a nice man. Never go during office hours, because he will make it seem as though you are annoying him with your "stupid" questions. His class is pretty hard. You definately have to know everything. But never ever approach him, unless in class, where he sometimes responds effectively to what you say.
Impossible tests, but interesting lectures...study A LOT for his exams
He gives interesting lectures, especially on evolution since that is his specialty. His tests are pretty straightforward, though he can ask questions about details learned in labs. Just read each reading twice and go over notes before class and you'll do well
This man is ridiculous. His class is worthless as is the material he tests you on. Might as well read the blurbs in the corner of the textbook becuase what you are taught in class has no relevance what-so-ever. His final was a joke. He should have just said that it was nothing we could ever pass and called it a semester. What a waste of time.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO. I made the mistake of taking this class because I thought I picked interest over grade concern. The information and lectures are incredibly interesting but his tests are ridiculously easy to fail. In the end, the curve will save you.
Matty Parker is the most adorable little man ever! His tests are pretty specific so you definitely need to read the text book and study a lot but he is passionate about what he teaches and makes lectures interesting.
Learned a lot of interesting things from his class, and enjoyed discussions. But he's totally unapproachable during office hours -as one user stated earlier- and you feel rushed. Definitely a family man, so it's hard to get in touch w/him outside of class anyway for help or clarification. Insanely hard tests, but doable if you think.
He's really a great teacher, no questions asked. however, his tests are SO specific thats its sometimes impossible to get over a 85, even if you read the textbook completely or take really good notes. i guess you could say 85% is biology subject material while the other 15% is just plain test taking abilities.
Dr. Parker is one of the best professors at this university. Although his tests can be pretty specific, you just have to learn how to study for them, and you'll be fine. Plus, he always ends up curving, so it's okay. He's so passionate about the subjects he teaches that it's interesting to just go to class and watch him. And the class is great. =)
His tests are terrible. I understand everything he teaches in class but that's only about maybe 60% of what is actually on the exam. Know any study listed in the reading and what it means. He also tends to put long answer problems that he didn't cover how to do in the class nor are expressed well in the text and makes it worth like 15 points.
Parker does a great job at taking a very complicated topic and breaking it down into manageable parts. The material is very challenging but if you go to class and do the readings it’s not impossible. His lectures are frenetic but he presents the material in a lucid manner.
Dr. Parker is great. He talks in lecture like he's trying to prove a point, not just trying to bore his students. He breaks down the concepts into understandable terms, and supplies sufficient example problems. If you read the book and keep up with the weekly homework problem, you should be fine. The final repleaces your lowest grade, but was hard.
really awesome professor. you can tell that he is extremely passionate about his work. lectures are extremely interesting. but the tests are hard as hell
He's a good lecturer in a sense that he's passionate about what he says but he uses powerpoint & goes too fast for you to take notes. There's a cumulative optional final only on lecture notes. His txtbk questions are hard & specific. If you take this class, be prepared to spend most of your time going over 8 chapters of textbook material per test.
Horrible teacher! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!!!tests are really hard and unfair, there is hardly a curve, and he is NOT helpful at all.
People warned me about taking his class. And now that it's over, I'm not really sure why. If you go to lecture and do the assignments, you'll be fine. If you want an A, you have to read everything. The tests are tough, but Parker's funny, easy to understand, and passionate. And yea, the class was curved.
This class is really hard. It seems like an interesting class, but seriously its not. All it is is equations, memorization and calculations. The curve sucks and the teacher is not helpful. Bewareeeee
The worst teacher ive ever had in my entire life dont ever take this class unless you want to kill yourself. Ive never been subdued to such a boring and impossible tests in a class ever if he was hear right now id probally rip his head off
This teacher is crazy, tests are ridiculos, there is no help if you dont understand something. Lectures are funny... sometimes but most are just too much information and when reading for the test you dont know what to study for. Book is useless but he just randomly uses pictures from the book on the test to make sure you fail. NO CURVES!
Parker is the REAL deal, he lives this material, anyone who says this class is unfair is a clown, read textbook and notes, he is very helpful if you attend office hours and actually WANT to learn
Lecture is very detailed and everything and anything he says could be on the exam. Test questions are so detailed and pull information right from the textbook, so reading is important too. Take good notes, study more than you think, and go to everything (including lab) and a good grade is possible
He put the questions so detailed like very detailed from every corner of the notes to every words he said in the lecture can be on the test. If u dun read the test book, u are 100% doomed, but abt 60% of the test questions can be common sense, so after all with a huge curve A is managable
Great Professor. He shows videos, making the already boring subject more interesting. Study hard for the exam, there is a lot of memorization.
He is horrible. His class notes are not organized and have nothing to do with the textbook reading assigned. There is too much memorizing! Too many random facts that he expects us to memorize. It makes me angry that I pay money to sit through his class.
Dr. Parker is funny, helpful entertaining and organized professor who makes me declare my major to Biology(i m sophomore). His tests are challenging which makes Biology a subject to worth studying for.I learned alot from him.AFTER ALL, HE IS THE MAN!!
notes are useless...didnt curve the grades...i regret taking his class
Dr. Parker is very enthusiastic, fun, and easy to approach. You can always e-mail and he responds promptly. The exam questions are specific and most of them come from the textbook. They are fair, however, and he gives such a huge curve. I studied about 6 hours for each exam and got an A easily with a RETARDED TA (His name is Burzin Chavda. AVOID!)
Lectures are boring and tests are impossible. You can study your notes for the tests and half the questions won't be from them.
first off anyone whos talking bad on this guy in 117 is an idiot. the guy is a genius and there was not one question he was unable to ans the whole semester. the tests were not bad. go to class and take notes. how can you say tests are hard when i saw at least 7 repeated ques on each test that were from prac tests or quizzes.
I am sure he is a very valuable research professor, but he cannot teach. The notes were nearly useless and the tests were insanely detailed. Thanks to the curve I managed a B but that was not thanks to anything parker taught. What I learned I learned from reading the textbook and studying hard for tests. Studying hard is a necessity to do well.
Parker really knows his stuff - he does make an effort to make lectures interesting. His tests are extremely hard, but with the lab grade, quiz grades, the fact that he'll drop the lowest grade if you take the final, and a curve, you can do well in the class.
The majority of the class got an A I think looking at the # of students that took the final. Parker is the best!
His lectures are interesting (he likes to make random sex jokes now and then), but they're barely helpful for tests. Tests are incredibly detailed, but they're curved. So just do better than everyone else and you'll be fine. Definitely one of the better intro bio professors. If only his lectures were as detailed as his tests...
He can't teach for his life! Nothing taught in lecture was helpful on the exams, as he is very vague in class. His exam questions are detaailed and very tricky. I had to just study like crazy from the text...lecture was useless.
definitely need to read the textbook inside out, very detailed questions. Parker loves to teach and you can see that when he is lecturing. It's a tough class only because of the exams, 60% of the material is common sense...The beginning of the course isn't too bad, but the material becomes very dense later on. One thing about 117 I HATE THE LABS!!
never take a class with this guy
I think Parker should not teach. He teaches like he's mumbling to himself and asks really tricky questions on exams. I also had Burzin Chavda as a TA and thought he was cool. He was lenient and easy to talk to when I had a question.
read the textbook!! very nice guy
so subjective, voiced his opinion and gave no one else a chance. dedicated a question on the exam blasting sarah palin, lectures are vague, exams soooo detailed have to read textbook alot
I sat in the back, did nothing and got an A. just go to class, read the textbook (its a must) and you will be fine. Mastering bio was annoying. Never went to office hours personally, but heard he wasn't much help. Lab were shorter than 118 labs.
Mechanisms of Evolution: Dr. Parker breaks down complex ideas into steps that are easy to follow. Just be sure to read your notes after every class and read the assigned material. He's also very approachable and will be more than happy to clarify certain concepts.
Lectures are interesting but useless. Test were impossible. The questions were worded wierd and were far to specific. This class should be easy and straight forward but Parker mad it impossible.
I've learned how to accept fail from this class.just want to pay tuition back I paid for this class.
You just need old exams to do well in this ridiculous class. Extremely destructive; brings the mechanism of GPA down and spoil a dream of life.
Complex ideas are tested, but never explained in class. Be sure to understand both the in class response questions(daily) and the homework sets. Test formats are inconsistent. Going to class is absolutely necessary!
READ THE TEXTBOOK, base almost all of your studying on that. but go to lectures as well because he'll base some of his questions on that. Tough Teacher and also, you'll need mastering bio.
This guy is so funny and ridiculous. But at the same time, he's brilliant, and provides convincing arguments for the subject. He also discusses really interesting ideas and makes it relateable.
excellent professor. explained concepts VERY clearly and knows his stuff well. energetic professor.
Independent Study: Worked 10-5 in his lab for 9 weeks over the summer studying the evolution of symbiosis between legumes and root nodule bacteria. I learned a ton; techniques will be very useful in grad school. Can be difficult to communicate with at times- speaks softly, but he is brilliant and very passionate about his legumes. Very friendly.
in the class now..tests on minutia. no way to do well
Had Parker for 117 and now for 351. He is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, but the class is so incredibly boring, its hard to pay attention. He also likes to test on random details, which is annoying if you didn't know that before the first exam.
Did research for him- he gave me an A, but refused to write me letters of rec. What??? The pic is misleading, I worked in his lab for months- he NEVER smiles and he's male chauvinist. The grad student didn't get lectured for spilling coffee all over the data, but I had to listen to him explain 50 times despite having always done it CORRECTLY before
I went to every class and discussion. Discussions are useless, but we take surprise quizes randomly. This class is a waste of money and time. Lectures are important to go to, however, his teaching style sucks. He is boring and I would avoid this class at all costs!!!!!!!!!!!!
Class is boring and tests are worded weird to confuse you and tests on the smallest most useless details. Information for class is not hard to understand but very hard to do well, unless you make this class your life you will not get an A
Had him for a seminar. He often rolls his eyes and gives stink eyes at students during discussions if when people ask simple questions. During presentations he asks confusing and off-topic questions to throw off the speaker. Friendly on the surface but somehow very rude and demeaning.
Interesting man with interesting questions. I didn't expect much from this class, but in the end I feel that I am more confident in my presentation skills and that the topic on origins of life is quite interesting. He can be a bit snarky at times, especially when students ask dumb questions, but talking to him one-on-one reveals his better sides.
This class was strangely difficult. I go to his class, write down the notes he writes down, reads some of the textbook, and I still did horribly in his class. His exams are hard. Definitely not straight-forward questions based off of the notes. In fact, when I think about it now, I really don't know how I could do better if given another chance.
this class is very tough. tests are very specific and nit picky. professor has interest in the subject but has difficulty conveying his ideas and building interest in his students. i don't recommend taking this class unless you have the time to put in a lot of outside work, going to lecture is not enough to do well in this class
Lectures are very clear and interesting. But his tests are brutal (difficult and very detailed). The class average has been around 60 for each exam. But you get an awesome feeling when you do well, because you worked for it. Go to lecture! Often you can get points just for being there. Only take this prof. if you're prepared to put in some effort.
Difficult professor but very interesting. Make sure you go to all classes and discussions and read all assigned textbook sections. This class can be very interesting and helpful if you pay attention and do the work. My favorite professor so far.
He may be good at teaching other classes but he is awful as a lab professor do not take him! I am a straight A student and I was struggling through this 2 credit class. The material is interesting but there is barely any guidance and the work is incredibly time consuming for a 2 credit class! more than any other 4 credit bio!
He's a boring teacher and his lecture is boring. He's sort of approachable. Tried to get help from him one time but he didn't even help me. He just talked his way out of it. He's nice, I just think teaching is not his thing.
Dr. Parker is very interested in evolution, but he's not always able to convey important concepts. He talks way too fast and seems very nervous when he lectures. It's very difficult to listen to him talk and take down his notes. The class would probably be easier if he posted his notes online. The exams and grading are very fair.
Super interesting course. I kept up with the work and found his comments on homework useful. While the homework isn't always easy to understand I found approaching him, classmates, or the TA very helpful. The class is fair and the final is optional
Dr. Parker is very enthusiastic about the subject, and this class is very interesting. It is, however, a demanding class. There are time-consuming assignments and difficult exams. Overall, he is a fair grader. My advice: go to every class, take good notes, and be prepared to work hard!
He engages you to think about evolution in an analytical manner. He explains the concepts very well. The exams are hard. They will test how well you can comprehend complex multiple choice questions so Read each question CAREFULLY. Each exam has about 4 or 5 mult choice question directly from book. Part 2 of exam is more mathematic based.
This was the worst class I've ever taken at this school. So difficult and he's not much help. The exams are ridiculously difficult and it's just unnecessary. If you have the choice, don't take this class.
He is not helpful at all when seeking extra help, and the math problems are impossible to understand due to the lack of examples in class and there aren't any in the text book.
Although the class is interesting and the professor is enthusiastic, everything else is bad in the class he teaches called the mechanisms of evolution (BIO351). For one thing, his exams are extremely difficult. No formal or appropriate practice given before the exams. Not a very helpful professor.
Parker is a great professor and really has a passion for what he teaches. Some of the stuff is really interesting, but you have to read the textbook to do well.
This class was interesting, but the way he presented the material really made enjoying the subject a lot harder. It is a tough class that you must work a whole lot for to expect a good grade. Discussion are hilariously useless and there are several homework assignments.
Probably one of my favorite professors and courses. The course is very problem based. He explains how to do the problems very well in class. If you follow along you should understand how to do them. Make sure you keep up with the homework and quizzes. There is only ever 1 at a time and they homework and quizzes are very helpful and not very hard.
The class is hard. The online quizzes are very easy; you can find the answers online if you don't have time to read that day. Test are similar to the practice homework posted online. In some test you will do very well on the MC and bad on the math or bad on the MC, but well on the math. I felt like the class got curved down at the end.
Provided a negative curve for the overall course. Unclear participation grading structure. Would not take again
Prof. Parker is a fantastic lecturer and clearly puts a great deal of effort into his courses. Attending lectures is mandatory as it is the only way to get the notes and there are one question attendance quizzes almost every day. His exams are tricky but doable and the HW points act as a grade buffer. I would take a class with him again.
The first test average was 68 and the second test average was 55. The material seems easy but applying material is hard, it is a hard class, you will pass but good grade is hard to get. Dont take this class with him, it is hard
This class is absolutely awful. Professor does not teach the material well at all, and questions on the exams are the most complicated examples. The subject content is somewhat interesting, but the professor makes this class a nightmare. Biochemistry is easier than this class.
The class is super interesting and Dr. Parker is a great lecturer. People seem to find the tests difficult. He expects you to really understand the material, but he offers bonuses questions based on readings so there is room to make up for questions. It is not an unfair class whatsoever and he is always available to help students.
Not at all a bad guy, just really doesn't know how to get his ideas across in my opinion. Exams can be extremely tricky and difficult, he's not great at explaining the math problems very well either, and then makes them very difficult on the exam. Homeworks are annoying and useless. Don't take this class if you don't have to.
This class was interesting but I found his lecture style incredibly difficult to follow. He uses a projector and hand writes all of the notes and figures, it is very easy to miss what he is saying while trying to keep up with his notes. His exams are hard in the sense that he expects very detailed answers even if the question is vague
I studied hard for this class, read through the textbook, never missed a single lecture and took good notes. I still only got a C- in the class. His tests are much more difficult than the source material and the practice tests hardly help. Ridiculous class for something that should be easier. Take Ecology if you're a bio major instead.
Parker is a really smart guy, but he's a horrible professor. His lectures are hard to follow, the exams are extremely text-specific and often avoid the main concepts all together. There was 1 TA for 100 students. Extremely frustrating since I actually studied hard for this class. Do not take this class if your GPA can't afford to take a huge hit!
I'm only giving Prof Parker a 1 because there is no option for a 0. He gives a ridiculously complex homework and there are two quizzes per week on material that hasn't been taught yet. No amount of studying will prepare you for the specific questions that are on the test. Do not expect a good grade. Anatomy & Physiology is easier that this class!!
The lectures and assignments are fine and doable; that being said nothing prepares you for his quizzes which make up 60% of the grade. The questions are vague and, when multiple choice, the answers all could be correct and it's difficult to decipher which response he wants. Also he often makes one question half the quiz making them easy to fail.
His quizzes have nothing to do with the lecture videos. The quizzes are only 30 mins and have questions from material from 2-3 weeks ago. All of the questions are based on the textbook & more than half of the questions are written. Completely unfair & stressful. He is a nice guy & I know he means good but he should really take some consideration
Dr. Parker is nice but he is a bad professor. His lectures have very basic examples of the concepts he wants us to learn, but when it comes to the quiz he asks questions that are wordy, have multiple parts, and are far more complex than the class examples. He doesn't offer practice problems either. all this class will do is lower your GPA. Avoid it
Dr. Parker is nice and he's very knowledgable, but his formatting for the online class is nearly impossible. Quizzes every Monday are worth 60% of our grade, and they questions asked are way more complex than the lecture content, so you're hardly prepared. He doesn't consider student feedback either, and isn't offering any real resources to help us
Lectures are easy to understand and the concepts are very basic, however his quizzes do not reflect that in the slightest. He doesnt not state what he wants for his quiz questions and are incredibly vague. He will take points off even though he didnt ask for it to be in the answer. Basically wants you to read his mind and guess his expectations.
Gives interesting lectures, but they do not prepare you for the quizzes and rarely feature the same content. He is a tough grader considering the quizzes are 60% of the grade, are timed, and on Monday mornings. I've learned a lot from Dr. Parker, but the quizzes and grades give the impression that this class has made me a much worse student.
Dr. Parker is a nice enough guy, but his course was far more difficult than it needed to be. Grades are primarily determined by weekly quizzes that are limited to thirty minutes, which wasn't nearly enough time. If you decide to take this course be aware the knowing every single detail from lecture and reading is necessary; literally EVERYTHING.
If you fit any of following criteria dont bother taking class: I want respectable grades Im premed Evolution is not my major. Quizzes were unfair, difficult, and the class was harder than it needed to be. I got put in this class by an advisor, got stuck, but thought I could manage despite reading his RMP reviews and I was wrong, DONT BE ME
