Great prof. Very helpful and lot's of fun! If you can get a course with him, do it!
Excellent math prof! Doesn't bog you down with annoying proofs you dont care about, and spends his time teaching you how to solve problems.
He's a really good teacher, and loves to joke around. He honestly just wants to ensure all students succeed. I would recommend showing up to class on time, and making sure that if you are late, go into class on the sides and DO NOT CROSS IN FRONT OF HIM! He hate that!
Really nice guy who is passionate about what he teaches. His french accent gets in the way of understanding him sometimes but overall, he knew how to get the concepts across to the students. His tests were very fair and prepare you well for the final exam. He is very friendly one on one so don't be afraid to go in like I was.
Great guy, funny, really good at teaching the material in an understandable way. Does a lot of examples on blackboard, which helps in understanding the material.
Matt is top-of-the line. He's funny, cares about his students, and passionate about math. He is always open to helping or going over examples again for those who do not understand. His tests are fair and prepare you well for the final exam. Great guy.
Extremely clear and energetic. He does all the work in communicating ideas so that you can understand him. He will always give you extra chances here and there to get everyone up to speed. If you get to class well rested and pay attention and are decently smart you will do well. I did poorly because I often skipped/couldn't focus.
Amazing teacher, very helpful and also he knows how to keep the class entertained he is funny. This class makes you want to wake up in the morning to attend
Amazing Prof, he knows his materials and communicates well with the students. Is funny during class when students respect him. Would highly suggest having this prof for math1009
Great prof. He's very excited all the time making the class never a dull moment. He really cares, and wants his students to do well!
Love his catch phrases. "Gimme a yooo!" and "Yoooo, guuuuys."
Great prof! Funny and although a tad complainy, he is just adorable. I think he thinks we were his therapists, but I didnt mind. I would've loved to marry him. :) Great job Mathieu and dont let anyone bring you down, not even yourself. YOU WILL FIND LOVE!
Cool prof! Remember, Practice Problems makes Perfect!
Use great and very helpful examples during lectures.
good prof
Great no accents simply a good teacher
Good prof, speaks clearly. Knows the content fluently. Down side, sometimes he seems bored when teaching and is shows. He seems to use the word "so" a lot when writing final answers to math solutions (I just wish he used words like therefore, hence, etc). Would I take it again with him? Yes hes a safe bet to an A+.
Funny guy, Didn't accept our friend requests on FB
Excellent prof!! he gives a lot of examples in class. enough to make linear algebra a bird course. but he uses different methods and terms than the book. which makes you have a hard time on the exam when a different prof writes it. otherwise he's amazing
Matt is a great prof, even though i had to take the 8:30 section. he was very clear with his teaching. Gives lots of examples and his tests are very fair. Great guy!!
It's never a dull moment if you enjoy goofy comedy. YOU MUST BUY THE TEXT BOOKS. Jamais enuyant dans la classe. BESOIN D'ACHETER LES MANUELS DE COURS.
Great prof - teaches very well and is a great guy. He's one of the funniest profs I've had to date. The textbooks were the nicest textbooks I've ever had, and were really helpful. Quiz at each DGD though, and the online homework platform is pretty awful (MAPLE TA). I recommend.
My favorite teacher!!!
OMGGGGGG!!! I love this teacher! He is sooooo funny and soooo helpful. I was soo lucky to have him as a teacher. He has a bit of a French accent when he speaks English, but its cute and it suits him. You definitely want to take his class! He writes all his notes on board, so you cant miss a class, but its worth it! TAKE THE CLASS!
Actually a fairly good math teacher. His accent is a little distracting but he is very knowledgable and doesn't make a lot of mistakes which is nice. Would definitely take one of his classes again. Writes all his notes on the board so you must attend class but it helped me learn better because I had to actually write it down.
best prof, excellent at explaining lin algebra
Great professor. He's good at explaining concepts and gives lots of examples in class. As long as you do the assignments and pay attention you'll have no problems with the material.
Tests questions are though! not covered in class, problem sets, or even book!
TA's are guided to grade so hard, and final exam was very hard and very strictly graded. Avoid his course if you have an option.
go to class, listen and copy the notes is advisable. Materials are mainly based on the notes and practice questions
Matt is a great prof. He makes the course content easy to understand, and gives you only what you need to know to do well in the course. Study hard, do all the tests, and attend classes regularly.
He spend all the time writing in the board and doesn't explains. So, basically you will have beautiful note with zero understanding. Plus, his tests are very long. There is no time to finish them.
MAT3320 taken at UOttawa. His exams midterms fairly reflect the given homework, and his midterm expectations are very clear. Final was less than clear, and relatively quite difficult. He does not encourage class discussion, takes offense to corrections always, and can be very whiny. Overall not a bad class or prof, one semester is enough though.
He is great! So funny and a caring prof.
I came with a terrible hatred and fear of calculus from high school, but Mathieu is an amazing prof who made me love this course! Very gentle while speaking and will occasionally crack a joke to keep people up. Would definitely recommend having him as a professor!
Lemire is not really a nice guy. He doesn't listen to his students. Overall, just do the assignments and follow his lectures, the exams should be fine.
Examples in class were easy to follow. Available outside of class for help but come prepared. Tests follow the mock which was nice. All around solid.
Really long tests
Mathieu's lectures are great with a key focus on practical exercises that will help you with the tests and tutorials. Don't skip class, do the homework and you'll be fine.
So basically you do a lot on the board and all he does it write things down and barley explains it. Second of all his test are hard and very long like not one person finished before the next of the period honestly if you get him I'd say switch out immediately or your gonna have a bad time
Very, very hard tests. Makes you work for it. Nice prof though. His lectures are helpful and organized. This course (MATH2004) was brutal, I don't blame him.
rarely makes mistakes good sense of humor Really good at the board work Says out loud, what he's writing so that it is easy to copy down definitions and theorems. He went out of his way to pull practice problems from BOTH textbooks, which is unheard of. This was a very generous gesture and was greatly appreciated. Test questions are hard!
Mathieu was an excellent prof. Attend lectures, he goes over material out of order from the textbook. He also explains concepts with great detail and cares about you doing well in his class. He does a lot of examples in class.
I really loved prof mathieu. i had failed calculus in high school but his lectures and tests were very easy. i love the order he teaches the material as well as the number of examples he does in class because it really helps with my learning. if you study his examples and do the homework your bound to get an A. im so happy i took calc with prof mat
very organized prof who is passionate about the material. we are tested on exactly what is covered in class with no nasty surprises.
He is a good professor. He marks well and fair. He teaches very well and I find it easy to follow. He hosted bonus office hours. Occasionally, he makes a joke (An SFW joke).
Good prof, hard course. Matt was always willing to answer any extra questions I had. Made me enjoy Calculus after not enjoying it for 2 years. I would recommend him in a heartbeat.
Very rude and gets annoyed easily. Calls out people that talk in class. Tests are very long and worth a lot. Will not listen to feedback . Sit close if you want to be able to read his writing. He posts lectures online but it's still recommended to go to class.
Mathieu is a fantastic prof. Very very rarely do you see math professors that care about the material they teach. For people like myself who are slower to get things, he gives a TON of examples and explains things quite clearly. I've taken this course partly before switching to another course, and Mathieu is quite stellar.
He does give a few too many examples in class, so bring a phone and play on it after the first or second example :P He also tries to be funny which sometimes comes off as a lack of confidence That said, he's a solid choice, and if you talk to him and ask him questions he'll teach you what's up.
Matt goes way too fast in class and I cannot even read his notes posted on culearn. I personally would suggest going to a different linear algebra section if you want to understand the content. Test wise. Just make sure you the practice problems he posts, but his tests are really long so practice your speed. I will not be taking his class again.
This prof grades very hard. in mat1748 he gets caught up on little details. His final exam is very hard and his mid terms are long
moves fast in lectures with little explanation. His handwriting is miniscule and illegible so sit up close, he is annoyed by everything. Very sensitive about his weight as he made a student delete a photo which was taken when he was standing at his side so you could see the profile of his gut
Bad handwriting. During pandemic, he didn't post any video lecture, or zoom lecture. Instead, he just posted the lecture notes...
Winter 2020. Handwriting was hard to read, so this was the only class I saw the front row packed with students. He did move along with the course at a fast speed, so always make sure to be caught up by the end of the week/before the tutorial as the tutorial would often cover concepts from that week. Very accommodating during office hours.
10/10 he's a rare prof that still loves teaching and is passionate about what he's teaching. He explains the material well and provides sufficient amount and levels of difficulty of examples he walks through during lec videos. He's very responsive via emails but if he hasnt replied, a follow-up email will get u a response within 24hrs. he's so kind
The lectures themselves are very clear and he explains very well. If you don't have a solid foundation in math it might be difficult to understand what he is doing but just review it. His tests are very long. If you have time management issues don't take his class! He is not open to criticism, he would not alter the test length he made them longer.
Most CS kids take this class to fulfill the math credit requirements. Lemire has very high expectations. He doesn't care about logic like most professors, just speed. My friend did very well, but he worked so hard. He did all of the textbook problems, then did work from another college textbook for things Lemire didn't explain well!
His tests are too long. Apparently 25% of students could not submit one of them. He does not respond to criticism well and did not adjust the test length when people asked. Calculus 2 gets very intense at times, especially when learning about series. Most professors like RJ Cova take it slow. But Lemire goes so fast and gives so much textbook work.
Very good lectures with good examples made every thing easy to understand. Open book tests were a big plus, but the tests could be quite lengthy. Lectures have enough examples and a textbook wasn't necessary.
He's a decent lecturer. I think he should stick to the online format because it was really organized and we could watch his examples multiple times. He assigns a lot of textbook homework, which I never did. His tests are very long. He is nice and responds to emails. If you ask him something annoying though he might get rude.
He is an amazing prof and explains the math concepts very clear. Homework is very flexible and manageable to do, at least for my experience. The tests were open book which is a big plus, and the worst mark was dropped. Don't give him a bad rating just because you struggle. I highly recommend taking him for online math courses.
He is good at explaining concepts. However, he does not listen to student feedback and he is unprofessional at times. He joined the class discord under a fake name, read all the complaints about him then took it out his anger on us. He posted a video of a character laughing, saying that will be him after we fail our test. The test was hard and long
His lectures were clear and the information was really useful for some test questions. He is a good prof if you're fast and have a good algebra foundation. The prof is super unprofessional sometimes; you should not joke about students failing. Even the TAs suggested reporting him because every semester he gets worse.
The people I know who did well in the course had to go above and beyond the work he assigned because his tests were purposefully tricky. He would put exponents everyone and negative exponents and made the tests harder than they had to be. On the bright side, he was good at explaining and clear unlike most math profs.
The homework and the lecture examples were very easy and straightforward. I would have liked it if we had more than just tests for grades though. He should have implemented tutorials for grades so we could practice speed. Take this class if you are confident that you can finish multiple 3 part problems, making no mistakes in a short amount of time.
The tests were very long. Most people were not prepared to have long tests. Even if people submitted feedback after the first test, he did not change the test length. Instead he made them a bit longer and trickier. He was the same when school was not online so be careful because you do not have the same resources in person and he's just as harsh.
The course is manageable but after every tests students would just talk to each other like "what just happened!". There was one kid who always did well be he said he learned the material all over the summer so it was review to him. The thing is Lemire gives long tests, asks to show your work, AND questions have multiple parts (a, b, c ,d).
The final exam average was in the 50s according to the professor. It would have been higher had he given us less questions or more time to account for the excessive questions. He does not give you time to review your answers. Just know if you take this class, he will explain everything but you are only graded from three tests and an exam worth 40%.
Good prof but he would go off topic making dumb jokes about things like being able to have a beautiful wife?? Humor is a good thing but not when there should be other priorities in the course like improving student experience. Also he was rude when people asked to see how to improve their exams since the average was so low.
Lemire is a good prof and you can tell he is enthusiastic about math. His tests aren't technically hard. Do the practice problems and you'll do fine. The problem is that his tests are too long for 60 minutes. For one of them I wrote non-stop and still almost ran out of time because I had to scan 15 pages and upload them before the deadline.
He's nice but being nice and being a good teacher are not synonymous. We spent a week learning certain series test while other professors took a lot more time to make sure everyone understands. Those professors also divided up the test content better. There are only 3 tests with Lemire and even if he drops the lowest grade it won't help much.
I liked Professor Lemire. His writing was hard to read, especially on a chalk board in a big lecture hall but he provided plenty of examples that were all very helpful. Tests felt a bit crunched for time so you had to know your stuff. If you need help, he's more than glad to help if you go see him. Good guy overall!
This was the first math class throughout my degree that I've actually enjoyed. The prof explains the background knowledge needed for each concept which is really helpful. Exam and test 2 weren't too bad, test 1 was a bit of a time crunch. Assignments are fairly straightforward using examples from the lecture.
HE is GOOOOOD in all the ways
best teacher ever, very funny. always put a smile on my face
If you show up to every lecture and do the homework you'll do fine. Tests had enough time but the exam was difficult.
Matt is super nice. His lectures for this course aren't super necessary to show up to because he uploads the slide notes he takes during class. Do the homework and practice and you should be fine. He is always willing to help, if you go to his office hour he will be more than willing to go over anything and everything you have questions on.
Very entertaining prof, they make classes fun to attend. They go through helpful examples; the notes are posted online and I found them very helpful for studying. Tests are given back to the students with feedback to help improve. Lots good tutorial questions with solutions posted online. Prosonally it was a good experience.
He takes random breaks in the middle of a sentence just to say how "cute" our class is... You can either copy what he does or pay attention not both.. while it's great that he does worked examples in class it would be great if he explained what he did and not simply doing it and expecting us to copy it down.
He's a great prof and is really good at explaining concepts, he also does lots of examples in lectures which is very helpful. His tests are fair. I recommend going to the lectures and copying down all his examples, and try to do all the examples by yourself when studying for tests, and you'll do great.
great prof very passionate about teaching :D
do not take him.
Compared to tests from other sections, his tests are extremely difficult and long. Other sections are way easier, switch out of his section if you can. He is a good teacher, but tends to go very slow through the easier parts and speed through more difficult content. Don't ask questions during class, he will be upset with you for wasting his time.
He went way too fast during class, and I would often have to come back and fill in sections in my notes because in class there wasn't enough time. He's not a terrible teacher, but not the best either. Kind of rude when answering questions and frequently interrupted class to ramble. Tests were long and not enough time would be given.
Took the course over the summer. Does tons of examples and assigns fair questions from the textbook. His tests were packed same with the exam, not hard if you know what you are doing, just time consuming. If you don't study, you won't pass.
He is a nice person. He marks tests fairly. He is helpful.
Mathieu was a really out-going guy, made lots of jokes and seemed passionate in what he was doing. But he does go on a lot of random tangents. He has also stopped posting the hand-written lectures he's done after October 9th. Still a really great guy but I honestly would not take his class again.
Explains concepts very well and seems well organized. It seemed as though he didn't want students to ask him questions during lectures. Quizzes were quite simple and I really appreciated the time flexibility he offered with them. The final was a nightmare by comparison. I would have preferred a midterm and a lighter final like my other courses.
Honestly I'm confused about him. He's a really good Prof and teaches really well. The grading structure was reasonable. Sometimes he's a bit rude? Also he didn't post any notes as he used to (stopped abruptly) to soft-force attendance. He puts a lot of examples which is good. The course is straightforward. He was *mostly* professional.
Quizzes were easy. I skipped class for 2 months and he stopped posting notes and I still did okay, so you'll be fine. Expect your grade to drop after the exam because you will not finish that exam. In the few days I went to class he seemed like a fun guy and he's pretty funny. Just don't ask dumb questions during class because he might get annoyed.
His lectures were alright but he is very unprofessional. it was uncomfortable to be in his class, wouldn't recommend. talks about the students he dislikes in class. quizzes were fairly easy/straightforward, but the exam was really long with lots of questions and not enough time.
unprofessional and sometimes rude. uncomfortable to be in his class. okay prof but not a great person
Odd fella at times. Good and clear lectures. He goes off-topic sometimes and calls out random people in class for small things like talking or going on their phones.
Mathieu is really weird and super passive-aggressive. He will pause the class to single out people for being on their laptops or quietly whispering even if they are not disrupting the class. I would honestly prefer if he were straightforward about what he doesnt like rather than stopping the class to awkwardly point out something he says is "fine".
Test are much harder than other profs, like EXTREMELY different from other sections (8-12 LA compared to 5MC 1LA). Rude towards students who are more or less just minding their own business, tells you the same story's over and over again If you want a enjoyable math experience, go to any other prof
Loves laptops and people using their phones, be sure to talk throughout his lectures he enjoys discussions amongst his students. Get up every two seconds to use the washroom, or just walk around if you want he's very calm
very unprofessional. will go out of his way to embarrass students in front of the whole class. not a great class environment. nobody will ask questions because they will likely be made fun of by matthieu, or he will make you feel bad about correcting something he did wrong. should learn to control his emotions.
I honestly love him as a prof, his teaching style if my favourite as he mainly goes through many examples. All the other bad reviews are mainly just because the people writing them have been personally called out by him and want to get back at him. If you shut up and don't disrupt the class, he's a 11/10 prof.
Overall, his teaching is good. I enjoy his lectures, but I feel that if he were to listen to students instead of ignoring feedback, his overall class and tests would be more enjoyable and manageable. Tests should have similar difficulty across sections and is fairer for all students, their difficulty should be on the same playing field.
Great prof! It was my second time with him. Once in a while he would remind students that they are not forced to come to class as the notes are posted on Brightspace. Big difference to others wrote. Somebody wrote about his tests vs the ones in other sections. Maybe it is the prof in the other sections that were faulty. Have you thought of that?
