Expectations too high for a community college; gives unclear assignments and deadlines with no rubric of required work.
His orginzation sucks! Doesn't like to teach. Only answer individual questions. Athough, he seems to be a better teacher then most of the Antro Lab professors.
He isn't that hard but overall i think he is pretty easy goin, um and it is pretty easy for him to go off on odd tangents, i think he smokes some green stuff before each class... thats the way it seems...
This guy is real easy, but not always clear on what hes saying. a nice guy who would rather be at home than teaching, and it shows.
Mr Archer is a really nice teacher and is very excited about anthropology. He tries hard and makes sure everyone understands it, and if not he'll go over it again. He also lets you choose what type of finals you want (in class, take home, etc).
A really smart guy, very nice, very approachable. He loves to chat about anthro, and he does have very high expectations of his students. You'll be hardpressed to find a cooler anthro professor.
Agreat guy!fun to talk to,down to earth.very flexible w/ things too!he'll help when needed.our class BOMBED ourmidterm so we got to take it home and correct ourmistakes for more points!its peace of cake justgo!suck up to him too, hell eat it up.our debate group gave him brownies,HE LOVED US AFTER IT!
Very good teacher
This class was a waste of time. Don't get me wrong, I liked how easy it was. We decided our two tests(final & midterm) what was on them & they were take home. But other than that he's an idiot. Opinions are fine but not when he's pretty much bashing other views. He has some totally wrong ideas too.
Should take class if interested in Anthropology otherwise boring and waste of time. Though, he is very helpful and willing to work with the class on the exams. Funny guy with lame, but funny jokes.
extremely knowledgeable... DOES NOT bash others views, he just teaches the concept of evolution the way it was meant to be taught... this class is not for everybody though... especially religious fanatics.
He is a great guy. The class was interesting and allowed for great group interaction. He allowed the class to steer the coriculum and we ended the semester doing a huge class support the troops activity. But it was class directed and Archer made what can be a way boring class fun and informitive. Didn't even know I was learning!!! Will take again!!
he sucks he sucks he sucks he sucks he sucks he sucks
Don't get me wrong, he's a nice guy...but he is not cut out for teaching. He gets frustrated easily when we don't do well on tests or don't understand the material. He hardly ever lectures and expects you to teach yourself. Kind of lazy...would not recommend him. I felt cheated out of money and time while taking this class.
Cool guy, pretty young for a professor but he knows his stuff. Very enthusiastic and passionate about the subject.
He was a cool guy, funny, and attractive. But teaching . . . maybe not his thing. Grading is inconsistent and not a reflection of what you know or what you learned in the class. The course was an easy A for me, mainly because I didn't deserve it. Howev
Matt was a very nice teacher and had some great stories. I wish we could have gone a little more into depth on some of the material. Our class seemed to like to chat and include their own personal stories. But the class remained interesting (loved it when he taught outside). Best part was that Matt was very nice and easy to talk to as well as easy on the eyes ;)
You need to try this guy out, you'll either love him or hate him. Very "shifty" class. Very flexible etc. Rather easy work. If you need a very structured class with scantron tests... Go find a different professor. I throughly enjoyed Archer though, his stories are great and it was a nice "break" mid-day inbetween those.. lecture. classes. that go on for hours.
I'm taking Gender, Sex, and Culture. And we talk about sex...so I suppose it holds my interest.
archer is great! the class was incredibly easy, we got to make up our own sylabis and work at our own pace. if you are looking for a class with due dates and specifics he is not your man. otherwise, i highly recommend him.
This class was hard. 1st test many weeks into semester; and was on 7 chapters, including DNA replication! He expects total understanding of detailed text material, identifying bones, different species by specific evolutionary traits, blah, blah. Expects too much for a mere intro. class. Take Molina-Stidger.
Nice guy but a bit vague with his teaching. Gives very loose deadlines and is so casual I'm not sure that I'm actually learning anything.
his class is definatley not for everyone. i personally loved the flexibility and and his lectures. its a fun class if you participate in the discussions. no formal test- 3 take home essays "exams". grades fairly.
assigns lots of papers to write to show your understnading about the topic, papers arn't hard to write. very lienant and easy going teacher
fun and interesting class, really nice guy. papers can be difficult sometimes, but a good class
Sometimes I really felt like I had better things to be doing than spending a whole class session discussing such trivial things as late work policies. Dr. Archer really tries to be "cool," but it makes his class a joke. Beyond this, cultural anthropology is a pointless subject anyway. Take a sociology class instead.
I enjoyed the class. He is very flexible so you need to be self-motivated on portfolios and final project. I is a very nice guy but seems a little overwhelmed sometimes. You learn a lot if you do the reading and participate in the lectures. I am majoring in Anthro. and I would recommend it for studnets who are majoring in Anthro. Easy A.
nice guy, very laid back.very smart.not all that clear on what he expects as far as deadlines or grading style. everything else about him makes it fun to go to glass.
If you're a person who likes to sit and be told what to do, Archer is NOT for you. He will make you think. He will force you to participate. If you don't love his class, you are most likely an idiot who doesn't belong in a college environment to begin with.
He tries to make sure everyone receives an A. The students organize the class. The only problem with the class is it is all discussion and because sex, gender, and culture is such a controversial subject the people in your class can make or break it and I have some Femi Nazi’s in my class.

Archer is the best teacher I think I've ever had. He uses an unorthodox teaching style that really helps you to retain information. He forces you to think about the course concepts and apply them in a fun way. He's very fair and runs his class in a democratic way. He's a nice guy too. Take his class if you really want to learn about anthropology.
Dr. Archer is a great teacher. You design the class, tests and requirements. Great class very interesting really knows what he is talking about. Very fun guy and seems like would be a cool guy outside of class. Very flexable with due date ect... Take this guy.
Dr. Archer was an enthusiastic teacher who cared about Cultural Anthropology and his students' questions deeply. He helps you see the significance of the subject and clarifies misunderstandings, although the discussions are so interesting and the questions answered so clealy there is little confusion. Take this class!
Never once used the text book I bought for this calss. He assigned readin and never once did we discuss it. If you like structure DO NOT take this class because there is none. I got an A and don't think I learned one single thing, what a waste of time, if you're interested in learning about anthropology this is not the person for you.
I totally disagree with the persons comment below me. Although he was disorganized, he let the class decide together about the rules and the homework load. I took three of his anthro classes, and I loved them all. He is a kind, passionate, funny teacher. I learned so much and gained a new love for anthro. I recommend him to everyone.
Great class if you can self motivate yourself to stay on top of assignments as there are no concrete due dates. If you need structure find another professor for this course. Discussions are great and interesting. Would recommend him for Anthro 2, take someone else for anthro 1.
Dr. Archer enjoys what he is teaching and it shows. You will look forward to coming to class. It can be a fairly easy A if you do the reading and come to class. The assignments are not hard if you pay attention.Dr. Archer is available to help whenever you need it. I highly reccommend this class to everyone!! Not to mention, he's easy on the eyes.
Dr. Archer was a very good teacher and works hard to help in any way he can. He is open to new ideas, especially to improve learning in his class. He really sparked my interest in Anthropology. My only regret is not taking the class in person.
I took Dr. Archer's on line class and really enjoyed him as a teacher. He is very open and participates whole heartedly in the process. He is a great facilitator. I wish I could of taken his class in person :)
His online class stinks. He does not engage and his sylabus is really confusing. He doesn't return assignments timely and no guidelines as to how he comes up with grades. Asks questions with questions. Got nothing out of the class but an A and a headache.
Matt is a young teacher that is trying to find his style or method in teaching. I took his class in person and was lost...he is going in the right direction but not quite there yet. He has a hard time getting assignments back at a reasonable amount of time. If you must take his class I recommend his online class.
Professor Archer is a great teacher. I took his online Anthro 2 class. In the beginning I wasn't too sure of the class and then got a hang of it. If you read, do your work, and have everything turned in before the semester ends, you will earn an A. He has a whole lot of knowledge and if you ever have a question, don't hesitate to ask him.
nice guy, but his class is confusing, the assignments do nothing for you. its one of those classes you can't really say how you feel about something you just have to make up some limp wristed answer that looks politically correct. subject matter is horrible. This is one of those mandatory affirmative action classes you have to take to get in sacsta
As the comment below says, the work is confusing! You don't really learn anything, you just have to figure out how to write the assignments so that they agree with his viewpoints. If he doesn't agree with what you wrote, you don't get any credit. I wish I knew ahead of time what the class would be like...I would have saved myself a major headache.
Matt's a very helpful teacher. His online class is very confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it it's not bad. He lets you work at your own pace and gives you tons of freedom for your assignments. If you're interested in anthropology at all, he's great!
I Love Matt Archer. His class was one of my reasons for coming to school every day. It's a loose class which throws a lot of people- there's so much freedom in how you show you know the material- no homework, no tests. Just engage yourself. Share your thoughts. He is SO open to class discussion and a really inspiring person. Take him.
His online class sucked, he wasn't clear about what he wanted. Its basically a discussion of some sort.
really nice guy. he seems totally open to everyones opinions, but then once you do the work you discover that you're not going to get a passing grade unless you write it so that it agrees with him. a few very interesting discussions, but overall an utterly useless class. I got a C cause I wouldn't change 2 of my papers to agree with his opinion.
Absolutely loved this class! Dr. Archer is great. Did not require homework or tests, instead Dr. Archer let you master outcomes in whatever way you, as an individual, did best. If you didnt master an outcome Dr. Archer would gladly let you do it again. If you keep up with the outcome dates there is no reason you should not get an A in this class
At the beginning he seemed all over the place, but over time I got used to his teaching style and I really enjoy his class. He's also pretty good looking ;)
Very easy class! He doesnt take role which I loved because it was my first class of the day. I ended up going only about 6 times all semester and got an A! He posts all his lectures and requirements on blackboard so I only went to class to turn in assigments... also there were no due dates so you did the assignments when u felt like it.
Probably one of the most knowledgeable and passionate teachers you will ever meet. Has great opinions, but wants to know yours as well. Open to your personal learning style, and willing to adapt his course to the indvidual. Fun topics, great lectures, easy going, and helpful with your outcomes. A very kind, compassionate, and up-to-date professor.
didn't care for it, I missed 2 days & felt like I did what he asked for a B & got a C. He definately wants you to agree w/ him, I ususally didn't. There is no real right or wrong answers it is all about his opinion. He relies on e-mail, yet somehow never gets them. If kiss up you'll get an A otherwise barely slide by.
I took Matts online class. Harder than I thought but only because I let myself get so behind - no due dates. Much of the work is short essay questions that is mainly an analysis or your opinion. If you pace yourself and do an "outcome" everyother week you should be fine. I didn't open my text once. No finals or tests, he's easy to communciate with.
This is my second class with Matt. He is very knowledgeable. Everyone who says that you must agree with Matt, don't understand Anthropology. Anthro is a class for people who can see outside of the box. Not for close minded "patriots". Matt is also an advisor to the anthro club. Awesome guy, defiantly recommend!! Open your mind!
His class was always entertaining. I've been missing a few lately but the only homework is answering outcome questions on the blogs. No points. He is very likable.
Very intelligent instructor. Encourages involvement in class and is detailed in response to questions from the class. Really enjoyed the class and I don't care for the subject. He made the material digestible and interesting.
Easy online class cause no deadlines.Confusing! But if you wait till the end of the semester you screwed yourself cause it takes so long for him to get back to you.If you email him dont expect him to email you back.If I had to take this class again I wouldnt.i dont like blogging.he doesnt grade enough so you dont know if you got it right or not.
Careful! This class may seem easy, but if you're a procrastinator, it's the toughest class ever! No due dates whatsoever. You could take or leave the text. Difficult grader in the sense that he CAREFULLY reads each of your outcomes so that he makes sure you've learned the material. He really cares about your learning, though, and always helps you.
Matt Archer is an awesome dude. He is very easy to relate to and grades well. There are no tests, no finals, just 'outcomes' you turn in once a month answering questions from a syllabus. Straight forward, very informative, I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS CLASS
the open ended deadline gets you hard though in the end. at the end when everyone is trying to fix up their blogs, he gets swamped and wont reply in time with feedback in time. if you dont meet every single one of the requirements in each blog outcome you dont pass it, and if you dont pass each every one you automatically fail, which i did.
Pace/discipline yourself in regard to completing assignments. Also know that Matt goes with the group- will assign readings and then not touch on them for several meetings if most did not read. Does tend to go off on tangents/not directly answer questions, yet is into his subject. NOT structured, which can cause problems, but one hell of a guy.
Prof. Archer is brilliant, compassionate and loves his job! It was a pleasure to be in his class!
Awesome guy, loved his class, made me very interested in cultural anthropology! Very easy to get an A, just do the assignments and show up for the discussions, he goes off on tangents often but that just makes it more fun.
I took his class online. We had to write our assignments on the discussion board and he would always tell me that my discussion was not broad enough. He was never clear about what he wanted and took forever to answer your questions.
Coolest teacher ever!! Laid back. No homework or exam/quizzes! only 3 easy projects to do and the only deadline is the last day of school! you are really able to come to class and enjoy just simply learning because there is no stress of memorization/tests/busy work, etc. very intelligent awesome teacher. plus, he plays reggae music before class :)
Took his online class. Extremely intelligent, albeit a little disorganized. Takes awhile to respond to feedback on posts, occasionally needs reminders, but well worth it.
Super laid back and cool. We did essays on a personal blog and all we had to do to pass was regurgitate what he said in class onto our blog. We were able to pick which topics we wrote about and he was very easy going about how we wrote. Easy to like his personality, easy to pass the class. We got to pick our own grades and everyone liked him.
What a fun professor. Has some cool stories to share and has a lot of real information to share about lots of topics. One of my favorite classes I took at Sierra! He's the kind of teacher you would want to buy a beer and talk to for hours to. He is known for being "easy" but I think it's a great class to prove you get what you put into it. Love it
Cultural Anthropology with Matt Archer ROCKED! He was so fun, (easily distractable) and our class had really fun talks/debates. He plays rostifarian music in the morning and loves to tell stories. There were some projects but he is lenient and willing to work with you. Awesome guy! Great class!
Dr. Archer is by far one of the best professors on campus. He is not only well educated but can relate to his students. He has such a passion for anthropology it tends to ignite that spark inside his students. His class could be considered easy but it's a class revolved around critical thinking, the course material can be difficult. TAKE HIS CLAS
Great Professor! No Tests. One thing to really keep in mind is that you must answer each question on the assessment in more than one sentence. He won't give you points for just giving a short and sweet answer. Don't wait till the last minute because he scores the assessments at a slow pace. This class is easy to pass if you just do the work.
Archer is the best teacher ever! Super easy and no tests. Attendance is optional and he is a really funny teacher. He will even change his lesson plans around to study stuff the class is more interested in. I would def recommend him!
Don't take this class if you want to learn anything! Matt is hard to follow and only connects with a few students. I didn't think anyone could make such an interesting topic boring until I took this class with him.
Kind dude, but definitely not professor material. He never truly answers questions and changes deadlines because nobody knows what is going on in the class. There is little to no organization (in the "not very fun and now I have to cram for a week" type of way). I highly suggest going with another professor if you're serious about Anthropology.
The class was the most interesting class I had this semester,it is really fun. Dr. Archer is awesome too! The grading system is unorthodox but I found it to work well. To get a C you need to complete 8/12 tests. To get a B you need to do the 10 tests and 6 short answers and to get an A you need to do the tests, short answers and project
awesome teacher, the globalization class he teaches is really good.
Matt is one of the funniest, smartest and coolest guys you will ever get to talk to. His teaching methods are progressive, but his classes lack structure. He always wants students to think for themselves, but he needs to give more definitive guidance. But he has his PhD and knows his stuff! Worth it to take his class just to get to know him.
Cultural Anthro. I went into this expecting to learn about different cultures, but instead we're learning about how to BE anthropologists... He's very nice and loves what he's doing but goes off on major tangents. Have to do a research project at the end for an A. Quizzes are taken at home and all can be corrected to pass them.
Matt is a cool guy, but as an instructor he needs a little work. A lot of the time he explained things unclearly and I found myself confused. His grading system is really weird, too. It's not a difficult class or anything though. Overall I had an okay experience.
I got an A in this class, but I could barely stay awake in the clas. It was beyond boring and all he did was talk the entire time. We didnt do anything with cultues, only with how to be an Anthropologist. I would not reccomend taking him. Even though he is an easy A, you will regret it every day you go to class.
This class was very easy but also pretty boring. It is a no-brainer to pass, but an A requires a little more work. I don't feel like I got much out of the class. You get what you put into each class you take though. Archer is a fun guy but his class might just put you to sleep. If you're looking to just get a grade in anthro 2, take Archer's class.
Terrible do not take this teacher if you can avoid it. I did all the work for this class and then two days after the calss ended i got an e-mail from Professor Archer saying my last revision wasnt quite what he was looking for. And he gave me an F for not doin 1 revision when he gave me no tiem to fix it.
I took the tv course for this class and it was super easy. You get to pick the grade you want based on the work required. I didn't have time for the research paper so I got a B. I only had to take the chapter quizzes and do the exercises and they were all very easy. If you put some thought into it he will find a way to make it relate to the subject
Worst class EVER!!! do not take this class it is so boring and pointless. his teaching methods SUCK and it was pointless going to class. complete waste of my time. a ton of reading and the test are absolutely ridiculous.
I took his online class and it was easy. All we had to do was write post that equaled 160 points and do a project. Then about three weeks towards the end of the semester, he lowered the post points needed to 140 and said that if we did the project, he would boost our grade up by one letter grade. Little guidance offered though throughout the class.
As a person this guy is great but as a teacher he still needs some work. Lectures weren't helpful since he doesn't writes notes, tests are wordy and kind of confusing, and you don't learn as much about other cultures as you'd expect. The class isn't hard but it's not that intresting either. I skipped A LOT and still got a B.
I'm amazed at how he can continuously talk for entire hour and a halves at a time, despite my regular slipping of attention span every 15 minutes. I very much enjoy his grading setup.
He has a very mellow attitude not an interesting class do not take unless you are super interested on this subject the exercises are very unclear his material is very confusing his setup enables procrastination and he never takes attendance which is cool but if you ate looking for a filler class choose something else and please don't take two of his classes in the same semester it is horrible! He's a cool guy tho :)
very nice, laid back. can be repetetive and goes off on tangents a lot, but easy class overall
Dr. Archer is one of the most intelligent people I've ever met. He is incredibly overqualified to be a Professor, hence the reason many students cannot keep up with him or understand him. He stimulated my thought process in many ways and I learned a lot. The advanced mastery's are a lot of work but they're not busy work, you actually learn!
Great teacher. Tests are online, must do corrections. Exercises are slightly long; however, its a college course-man up! The class project is necessary for an A. I learned a lot. Information presented was real & could be applied to life in general. Very flexable teacher - but don't get lazy it only hurts you. Loved the class, would recomend to take
Very energetic and fast-paced. One of the most knowledgeable teachers I've ever had. Class structure kind of confused me for the first month, but after a while I caught on. Easy to get an A if you do the work he asks. Tests are online which means it's open book. Not bad to look at either... :)
Do not take him! He doesnt really teach his class! His way of teaching, the method really sucks. Also, there is no point in showing up! He randomly talks all period. He is very much mono tone, as well as he acts like a little kid. He also says "how do you say" and "that's an interesting point" almost every time he talks or anyone says something.
Very good teacher, knows what he is talking about and has actually done some work in the field(a plus in my book). Course setup takes some getting used to, but it is simple in execution. If youre looking for a bland, by the book lecture class, This is not it. Planning on taking his Gen, Sex and Culture class next semester and looking forward to it!
Took his online anthro2 class and it was SUPER easy! I'm assuming most of the negative reviews have to do with his in-person classes. Because his online class is awesome. All you have to do is pass the tests with an 80% or above and do these homework exercises every week to get a B. And if you want an A there is one class project.
he has a different class format than most teachers, he lets you redo everything as many times as you want. he is very laid back and although i found myself bobbing off when he lectured i would still say he is a good teacher. do the class project, its not as hard as it sounds and he is extremely helpful with it.
Cool teacher, easy to pass, and has many interesting discussions. He'll make you work hard for an A but getting a B really isn't hard. I would recommend him. :D
If you ask me, Matt deserves a chili pepper next to his name. Over the years, through student feedback, he has arranged the course around a very conducive style of teaching to benefit many types of students. Matt lectures clearly, loves to help his students on-on-one, and is a casual, funny guy. For GE credit or Anthro majors, I highly suggest him.
Intresting class, weird grading scale, but is easy to adapt to. all notes and test are online, attendance isnt mandatory. Great teacher gets you involved and is very easy going.
Funny/interesting teacher! Talks with his students not at them. Very insightful and dedicated to his subject. You choose your grade, very manageable workload
Super nice teacher! Class is fun and interesting! He wants you to want to learn! He gives you as many times as necessary to pass all tests and assignments so that you actually learn the right answers! You also pick your grade in the class and only need to do what is necessary for that grade. TAKE HIM!
Mr. Archer is such a great teacher! his style of teaching is very laid back and he loves to listen to everyone's input. He is really good at guiding the discussion and circling it back to the subject being studied. Plus he loves reggae and soccer.
Matt is a wonderful professor! Great teacher for anthropology and non-anthropology majors. He really works hard to help his students and provides really interesting topics for discussion in class. His class is very chill, so chill that he begins each day with reggae music! Take globalization, awesome class!!
Matt is a brilliant professor. He's very approachable and laid back, and will work with you on just about anything. If you happen to get a bad grade on an exam, you can actually go back and make corrections for full credit. (The fact that he's hot doesn't hurt, either)
Matt is a fantastic teacher and I really enjoyed his class! It was not hard to get an A as long as you do all the assignments and he lets you do corrections on all your work. He is very easy going and fun and plays reggae music in class every day. Loved his class! :)
An excellent teacher and extraordinarily helpful!
Great professor. Willing to help you with whatever you need help with. Laid back, plays Reggae at beginning of class. Always enjoyed class discussions. If your going to take Anthropology, take it with him!
One of my favorite teachers at Sierra! People say his class is boring because they have nothing to contribute when it comes to class discussions. If you apply what you learn to your life, you will definitely have a great experience. You have to work hard for your grade but its worth it.
He's a really nice, respectful teacher and knows the material very well. He makes class interesting and fun, but can go off on tangents and allows the class discussions to go too long and off topic. He is slightly unorganized and assigns A LOT of reading and a class project but overall I liked his class and would want him as my teacher again.
He does not even really teach the class. There is no point in going to class because he doesn't even teach. Overall his class is not worth it. I do not recommend him at all.
Archer is an amazing professor! Taking his online class opened my eyes to what a good professor actually is. I was just thinking the other day that I wish that there were more out there like him. It takes a while to get adjusted to the way he runs his online course but it is easy if you want to actually try and all in all it is fun!
A LOT of work for a gen ed class. There is 10 units, 2 essays per unit, 10 quizzes, a final project with things to do for the project in each unit. and A LOT of assigned reading. and its basically pass/fail. And he's using his students as Guinea pigs to create his new way of grading that he has not yet perfected, and it kinda throws you off!
This class was fantastic. He has a real passion in Cultural Anthropology andreally makes you want to learn it as well. Found myself wanting to pay attention to what he was teaching. There was a final project at the end of the semester that many didn't do but i did and felt it really helped. Also has a very organized class plan. Absolutely loved him!
Definitely recommend him! he really works with the students to make sure they are successful in the class. Also very passionate in what he teaches. Loved this class.
This guy is nice.Gives you more time to do the assignments if you need, but the open book and unlimited time exams are still too hard to get 80%. There were too many sources, to read and it would take me days and days to take just one exam and still did not leaned much. Overall I did not like the class and would not take any class with him.
Never thought I'd have this problem, but this course is almost too laid back for my liking. His exams are incredibly long-winded and confusing, but he a very open-minded guy and creates a comfortable environment to learn. I only wish he'd be more clear about assignments.
Dr. Archer is such an awesome professor. He structured his class so uniquely and I loved it. You definitely earn the grade you deserve and he gives you many opportunities to do corrections.
If you need a solidly structured class with actual deadlines and such, DO NOT TAKE. Gets off topic very easily, poorly structured class.
Awesome teacher! Very approachable, understanding, and flexible. Super easy class, NO tests. Enough said...
he's a great teacher, he forms his classes around their interests and needs rather than just having them learn dry things they're not really interested in. super cool guy. i definitely recommend if you're interested in anthropology at all. I've taken all of the classes that he offers by the way.
Genuinely cares about his students' academic success. There is a lot of reading and busy work, but if show up to every class and turn in your work on time, you'll do great. Grading is unconventional, but after a few weeks, you'll get the hang of it and will more than likely prefer this method of grading. Highly recommend taking his class.
Interesting class and professor knows what he is talking about. However, this class in not your traditional college class. Be prepared to spend immense amounts of time on work for this class that doesn't always make sense to the course. Don't expect to come to class to hear a lecture and be quizzed on the information like traditional classes.
His teaching is different, grades on a passfail and you can turn in an assignment as many times as you want. Online quiz every week pretty easy, and 4 assignments for each unit. If you want an A you have to do a group paper, but if not just do the basic assignments and you'll get a B. No exams! Learned a lot, loved this class! Matt is awesome.
Matt is a professor who really cares about your grade. He listens to student feedback and tries to teach the class best for students success. One of the best teachers i've had. His grading works to give you as many chances to get credit as you need. But expect to spend a bit of time on weekly assignments. No exams just 1 online quiz for each unit.
One of the best teachers at Sierra. Funny and smart.
MATT IS WONDERFUL. He's a genuine, caring, great professor who truly wants his students to succeed. The lecturesdiscussions are interesting. A lot of work, but it's fun and interesting plus due dates are open ended. It was an amazing class! It changed the way I view the world, and my own life. I highly recommend it.
Matt is an amazing teacher. I took my anthro online class and he seriously cares about his students. His assignments are on a passfail basis, and you can attempt to pass it as many times as you want. This means that as long as you do well on the quizzes (which you can take twice and keep the best score) then you can get an A if you put in the work
Fabulous teacher, and by far the most interesting class I've ever taken.
He's a great professor! Really knows his stuff! Class discussions are entertaining. It's a really eye opening class. The grading process is simple once you get the hang of it.
Upfront about the course work. He is very open to allow you to complete the tasks at your own pace. As long as you complete them you can get an A, just keep up with your work. Great discussions and open to any point of view. Great class that helps you in both anthropology and other aspects of your life.
Warning: This class is not like any you will ever take! His grading curriculum is passfail, & you can turn in any assignment as many times to get the credit for it. NO TESTS! All online quizzes which are open notebook. But in order to get an A you must complete a research paper of some sort. Prof. Archer was an AWESOME teacher, i learned so much.
Didn't have to go to class at all. So easy. Graded by A level, B level, and C level assignments that all had no due dates. No tests or quizzes. He was awesome!
Dr. Archer is awesome and he makes linguistic anthropology fun. He is really chill; almost too chill. His class requires a lot of self-control on the student's part, because he does not take attendance, and there are NO EXAMS whatsoever. So, you have to really push yourself to attend class. He cares for his students and is available in his office.
He is a very passionate professor. He creates genuine interest in the subject matter. There is a different criteria for grading which means no tests. In order to earn an A you have to do a 15 page research paper. We just got the criteria for the research paper a week ago. Stressful!!! Did tons of research, but may not get it done in time!!!!
Matt Archer is an AMAZING professor! I wish he taught every subject possible! He is very approachable, there's reggae music playing when you come to class and he genuinely cares about his students! He gives second chances on assignments, quizzes and even the final project! Expect to do homework & learn valuable perspectives on life! TAKE THIS CLASS
I really enjoyed his class I would recommend him to anyone. Fun and challenging course.
He's not a good teacher. He prefers a hands off method and provides no structure.
Dr. Archer is easily one of my favorite professors. He really knows his stuff and he does his best to make sure that everyone understands the material. He welcomes any questions and emphasizes that he wants you to take away the topics learned in class, and not just stress over the assignments. Make sure you stay on top of your work!
One of my favorite teachers ever! I learned the most in this class and I never thought I would have liked this class prior to taking it. It's easy to get an A if you work hard. There's lots of HW and reading, but grading is pass or needs improvement, and you just redo the assignment if you NP. Quizzes are online&can retake, but need an 80 to pass.
Overall the course lay out it confusing. You can choose what grade you want but have to be willing to do the work. Unit quizzes all have to be passed with at least an 80% for a C, to get a B you need to do unit quizzes, in class reading discussions, and response papers for all units. To get an A you have to do a 15pg research paper or 2 7pg'd paper
Getting a B in this class is insanely easy. Doing the reading notes just means highlighting some of the sentences in the chapter, just show up with a highlighter and half of the B level assignments are done. Sooo easy.
I learned a lot in this class, but it wasn't as easy as i thought it would be. Receiving a B/C grade was very easy, but he doesn't grade the A-Level project as easy as the B/C level work. Make sure you stay on top of your work, especially if you try to attempt the A-level stuff. Overall he was very helpful and responsive to his student's needs.
The key to taking a class from Archer is to stay on top of your work and go talk to him as soon as you don't understand. Grade structure is not typical. In order to get an A you have to do 3 Xs the work as for a B. But it's possible.
Dr. Archer is such an amazing professor, he is very invested in anthropology and loves what he does. There were A, B, and C-level assignments throughout the class. There are no quizzes or tests, the "homework" (a list of assignments to do) have no due date and are due by the last day. He gives a semester review to see if he should change anything.
Archer is a genuinely involved professor. I took his anthro of sex/gender/sexuality class, & it was delightful. While the material isn't difficult per se, you do have some degree of responsibility to read what you need to to be able to participate in discussion, & his style of teaching is unique in that the course work is very much in your hands.
I cannot express how awesome Matt is. I HIGHLY recommend taking his classes. Everyone I talk to adores him. He is beyond helpful and engaging. The class goes by super fast, it's an easy A(as long as you pay attention and do the work assigned). I wish I could take more of his classes. Best teacher at Sierra! You won't regret taking his classes.
great teacher
Matt was a great professor. Very engaging and gave great feedback. His class structure, however, is very confusing. For the first two weeks I was confused and stressed because I thought this class demanded a lot. But I urge you to not drop, because once you understand how it's structured, it'll be the easiest class in your college career. I promise
Dr. Archer is one of the best professors ever, wish he taught all classes. The first week was confusing, didnt quite get what we had to do, and how things work, but you get the hang of it, and it becomes so easy. No tests or finals, only have quizzes which are online.
Matt is hands down one of the most incredible professors I have had at Sierra. He encourages critical thinking to become as natural as breathing is, to his students. The material will force you out of your comfort zone but Matt clearly articulates his depth of knowledge about Anthropology, people and culture.
Matt was a great professor and really cared about his students. He accepted late work until the last day of class, but the way his class was structured is hard to grasp. He has C level assignments, B level assignments, and an A level research paper as the final but it's optional which is strange. I clearly got a B but he put a C on my transcript.
I wouldn't take Prof Archer again, but I can see why so many people like him. He's a really nice guy! But for me, the class felt like a colossal waste of time because everything we did in class we could do on Canvas or teach ourselves at home. Also, he LOVES to have us discuss everything. Like everything. It got really tiresome after a while.
I was so skeptical about his class structure probably until 3/4 of the way through the semester, but the best thing about his class: You can get an A if you want, guaranteed. He is one of the few teachers that I believe when he says he wants to see his students succeed. I enjoyed his class discussions and minimalist-style of lecturing!
Lots of homework but it's reall easy. Research project to get an "A" isn't that hard either. Didn't have to use the textbook once, the power points summarize and simplify what you need to know. Also non biased politcally so that's a plus.
Listen when I say this, TAKE THIS CLASS! He cares about you and your grade. You choose the grade you want the way he runs his grade system. And DONT be scared, ask questions about his grading system! It is very confusing but VERY easy once you get the hang of It. I loves him as my teacher.
Great dude! Super helpful, and the kindest person! His class requires quite a bit of homework, but it is all easy and getting an A is not hard as long as you apply yourself! Very approachable and is always there to help!
Professor Archer is really nice and is very passionate about Anthropology. All honesty, he assigns too much hw. You have 8 assignments a week (2 quizzes). Granted he lets you turn them in late, the assignments are very time consuming. Plus you have a giant project due. He's really down to earth, but not sure if the work he assigns is worth it....
Loved the way that he has his class set up. He is the PERFECT online teacher because of how flexible the way you learn is. Always wants to know how he can be a better help/teacher to you and is just an awesome genuine guy. Subject matter is interesting and I never felt bored :D. Very fair and clear grading, you end up getting the grade you deserve.
You NEED to take this class. The way that the class is structured will make you sad at the idea that other classes are not. I cannot give enough praise to this professor for making his online class feel more involved than one that is in person. the communication is amazing. 5 stars! I would go on and on but the character limiter is ... limiting.
Respectful and very understanding
Matt Archer is a GREAT teacher. His lectures are just as amazing as he is and he really loves what he does! there is a heavy amount of homework but his grading system is so simple and he makes it easy to work ahead at your own speed. He is a very nice caring teacher and wants to make sure you understand what you're learning.
I loved Archer as a person! So caring and sweet and kind to all of his students. His grading criteria was a little confusing and really requires you to know yourself and how you work. If you arent self motivated or procrastinate, you wont pass, because all of the work is done on your own and there are no deadlines until mid/end of semester.
One of the most interesting and genuine teacher I ever had. I think it should be mandatory to take this class. I really enjoyed his teaching and coursework style. If you are independent and not a procrastinator then this is the class I recommend. What you put in is how the results will show in your grade. I love his positive energy and flexibility.
I highly urge students to take his course!! Most genuine & understanding guy who is very passionate about student learning & engagement. Very clear on grading, though different & hard to get the hang of at first, & requires lots of assignments to pass. If you fall behind however, he works really hard to accommodate & help you to the grade you want.
Even tho he requires a lot of homework he doesnt go harsh on students. Very caring and understanding. Always happy and willing to meet and talk with students. Very good professor with his own unique style of grading criterias.
Professor Archer is an amazing teacher. He really wants his students to succeed and he is very passionate about this subject. His lectures are so clear and straight forward. This class in general can be a bit confusing but if you study and ask questions it becomes easier. Highly recommend this professor
Mr. Archer will make you care about Anthropology even when you think you wouldn't at all. He cares deeply about the students and the world as a whole. Open to any conversation and will never cut off a student speaking. One the the best people I've had the privilege of knowing. Do not think you can skip the homework, it is vital for in-class credit
Prof Archer is a great professor he has a unique grading system where you choose what grad you want to get A, B, or C and do the assignments that are required for the grade. He always gives great feedback and overall is a great person who wants his students to succeed.
TAKE HIM! He is always there to answer any questions and makes everything so clear. It seems like a lot of work at first but after 2 weeks you start to get the hang of it and notice how easy it is to pass his class. There is work, every week multiple things to do but it is so easy and he is so supportive that you can go back and make up your points
Professor Archer is AMAZING! Learned so much from his class, and he cares very much for every student in his class. There is a fair amount of work to do each week, and a unique grading system, but you get the hang of it quickly! Provides great feedback and is always there when you have a question! 100% recommend!
Attendance is mandatory, you will not pass if you don't show up. There is a lot of homework and essays. There is a lot of studying. During class it's 70% group discussions, and 40% lectures. A lot of the time we would finish having our group discussions, and so much time would be wasted in between. I would not take this professor again.
Prof Archer was the most thoughtful and resourceful professor I have had at Sierra College. He truly cares about and is there for his students. His class is set up slightly different than most but is easy to get the hang of and he modified the material to fit the class's needs.
Professor Archer was really nice all the time and cared so much about his students being successful in his class. Although sometimes his grading system did get a little confusing, he's really easy to reach and always checking his email. Overall an awesome course, and I would definitely take him as a teacher if I get the chance too again.
Super awesome teacher! I never met a professor that understanding of life outside of class. Although is work seems overwhelming, briefly reading through powerpoints and following the rubrics for discussions, easy A.
Great Professor who generally cares about his students inside and out. would take any class he offers because he's that good of a teacher and he wants his students to succeed and get an A in his course
Professor Archer has a different grading system which I really enjoyed. He gives you the option to work toward the grade you want. He was very attentive on making sure you were doing ok with understanding how everything in the class works. Learned some very cool information. Professor Archer was Probably my favorite professor I have had so far.
Prof. Archer was one of the best teachers I've ever had. He truly wants to help you. He really enjoys helping students and his positivity is encouraging. He does have homework and a quiz assigned every week but it's not hard at all and there is a final project. I would 1000% take his class again if I had to repeat the class.
Archer is the best professor I have ever had. He is extremely kind and genuinely cares for the wellbeing of his students. a TRUE anthropologist. Easy classwork, engaging lectures and great class discussions. 10/10.
Professor Archer is a very caring person. He genuinely cares for his students and at one point checked up on me to see how I was doing. His overall class and grading system is quite different than any other class but still makes it easy to maintain with other courses. 10/10 I genuinely recommend this professor.
Very caring prof and easy class overall, if something comes up it's easy to make up the work and achieve the grade you would like to receive.
There was a lot of lecture material that seemed to be redundant and uneccessary. The grading system was also VERY confusing and I did not know my real grade for the whole semester. It was easy for the most part, but I spent a very large majority of the class being confused.
Honestly, the easiest college class that I have ever taken so far. The professor is also extremely positive and a good person in general. He also gives good feedback and his grading system allows for a lot of autonomy. This class is very discussion heavy and all of the concepts that are being taught are very easy to understand. Very good class.
Great professor, truly cares about his students and lets you choose the grade you want in a sense.
It is clear he is very passionate about what he teaches. The more you participate in class discussions, the more you get out of the class (but it is not required). Usually there are table group discussions. The grading system can be a bit different at first but it allows you to pick your own grade. No tests/quizzes but an open-ended final project.
Terrible class. This class took more of my time than my STEM classes. He would grade assignments MONTHS. LATER. Just to mark them 0 for not following the vague directions given. First B I've ever gotten, as he did not grade the assignments I redid.
Different kind of professor who lets you choose which kind of assignments you will be doing and gives lots of freedom for assignments in the classroom. Don't take this class if you like a traditional class with boring lecture, homework, and tests. This class talks about many controversial topics in an open discussion based manner.
Sure, his class is hard if you actually want to try, and his teaching style is a little different from other classes. But don't underestimate the class. He truly cares about what he teaches and is willing to walk you through everything you need to know. I took his Majic, witchcraft, and religion online class, and I learned so much. Thanks Archer.
Powerpoints are 50+ slides, lectures vary from 20 - 50+ minutes, and you either pass or fail assignments. He does give you the chance to redo them though. Vague instructions, especially the final project. I had no idea how I was doing in the class because I would "pass" assignments but he would also add that I didn't meet all of the the criteria.
This class was incredible. Dr. Archer is not only very understanding, but progressive regarding his grading methods. The only way to fail this class, is by not doing the work. Within the first two weeks of the course, he will clearly articulate what his grading methods are and how to clearly earn an A, B, C, or an F. Do the work and you will pass.
Cultural Anthropology was one of the best classes I have ever taken. A lot of it had to do with Prof. Archer. His lectures didn't feel like lectures, more like a class discussion. His grading structure was clear early on. I learned a lot, and I wished all my classes were more like his. Kinda goofy, but inclusive, thoughtful and meaningful convos.
This professor was amazing and I would joke with my family that I would like to become the next Matt Archer.
Dr. Archer is by far my favorite teacher! He cares so much about his students and the information he's teaching us, and his assignments are always completable. He is huge on equity and his curriculum and choose-your-grade system is super important! I learned so much in his class! I am taking another class of his soon and I definitely recommend him!
I love the way he goes about grading and how he lays it out, I thought it was unique and effective.
Professor Archer's class is a unique experience. His choose-your-grade system and engaging discussions make it easy to learn. For study prep, tools like unstuck study and the free textbook are super helpful.
Classes didnt feel super planned. There wouldn't be much planned besides people just talking and if there was It would be kinda crammed in at the end. Definitely a good dude and if you're looking for the peak of a relaxed professor then go for him but his style just wasn't for me.
Class feels unstructured, choose your grade system with "completed" or "not completed yet" for every assignment would work in theory, but directions are often vague on assignments. Got feedback like "think more anthropologically". Sweet guy and very understanding, but the lack of structure makes it difficult to engage with the class. Not for me.
This class was very forgiving with homework assignments, and he gives good feedback (if you can read it 😆). This class involves creating new perspectives of the world and I recommend attending as many class as possible. The classroom environmen was conversation oriented, which helped me breakdown and digest these big concepts and cosmologies.
Will never take this professor again.
I have mixed feelings on this one. The class was super interesting, and Prof. Archer is a really cool guy who clearly cares about his students and knows his subject. But there was SO MUCH homework. I felt like I was drowning the entire semester and his expectations on assignments weren't always clear. He accepts late work though, so that helps.
