Coming from someone who is marginally mathphobic I would absolutely recommend him. The only caveat to his class is that his quizzes are difficult and he puts too much weight on them when it comes to the overall grade. They are very helpful in preparing for the tests but dragged my grade down a bit.
Excellent instructor, is always open to help you with anything you don't understand by offering a study group session before class once a week. His lessons are clear, but he does go too fast sometimes, just be sure to let him know and he'll slow down and go over anything you missed. I had to drop, but I would take him again if I could.

He is a wonderful human being, and a GREAT teacher! He is so cuuuute! Lots of positive energy. Very helpful. And has an adorable smile!! One of my fav profs!!!
he moves really fast in the textbook and will lecture if you are late to class. his style is very high school. he collects hw randomly and assigns hw everyday and sometimes a lot of it. he not very clear in explaining the material. hes a cool guy but I dont recommend him for those who is trying to learn the material.
A very smart teacher who obviously knows the material well. That being said, he often had trouble communicating his knowledge to the students, and his explanations, when asked to clarify, sometimes just made things more muddled. Always willing to stop and try to explain though.
He may not be clear at first but when he explained it in detail when asked about it, everything becomes clear. He's a very good teacher.
I took this class last summer and I'm taking math 110A now. I doubled up during fall semester. well that beind said this was a great teacher. I got a "B" in his class because I never really double checked my homework. He collects homework on certain days and only corrects the even ones. If you are good about doing your homework. Take him!!!
Unbelievably good teacher, highly recommended! Moves fast through the material but explains everything very clear with a lot of examples. Got an A, I'm pretty proud of myself!
Mr Bertens knows what he's teaching, but he has difficulty communicating. His lectures are fast, but you can ask him to slow down. He does not drop the lowest test grade. He's willing to help during office hours, but he's still a tough teacher (esp. calculus). I ended up dropping his class. I wouldnt recommend him unless you're really into math.
Tough Tough teacher I highly advise you not to take him especially if you really suck in math.
Very passionate about math, friendly, willing to put in extra time to explain, cares about how he teaches. Tests/quizzes were harder than he thought they'd be, but if the class as a whole does poorly, he loosens the grading scale. Knows the subject intimately, but has a hard time putting it in simple terms for students. Nice guy, tough teacher.
Hard class, study, do you homework and ask questions. Matt is all about asking questions and helping the students.
He knows what he is talking about, though he cannot explain the material very well. A lot of hw questions, but you don't have to do every single one - do some with work showing and he is happy (as long as you understand). Tests were examples and hw questions. He'll try and answer your question, and/or will stay after class to help.
Moves fast in lectures, but is willing to stop and explain the material. Assigns alot of hw, but he goes over it in detail. Reviews are very similar to the test. Does provide office hours and is willing stay after class to help if possible. Also he's cool to talk to, very nice guy i'd say.
He was an awesome teacher! I took his elementary Algebra class. I understood every word he said, unlike my high school teachers. I totally despised math in high school because it was so hard and I kept failing my math class. He taught me more math in one semester than in four years in high school combined! I of course got an A, and now I love math!
Greatest teacher in the history of teaching. Calculator-free class (they're neither needed nor allowed) and he tests on your understanding of the concept. He doesn't give answers to questions, rather works out the question in front of you. Only downside is he's wasted on most of the students, who only want to learn to punch numbers into a ti-99.
matt tries his best to help students so definately go to his office hours for help. when you ask him a question in class, he'll try his best to explain it clearly so that you understand the material. he lectures pretty quickly so buy the book because its easier to follow him in class. overall, i thought he was a good teacher.
Great Human Being , willing to help students goes a little fast but that's when the math lab comes in . Lots of homework randomly collected for xtra pts. he tests for understanding of the concept (but careful w/ your symbols!) Friday is quiz day , very important as it's 50% of your grade final is OMPREHENSIVE NOT CUMMULATIVE. Hang in there worth it
Mr. Berten is a wonderful teacher.. i had him last semester and it was great.. his quizs r around 3-6 problems and if u have any questions u can ask him for help he's a really nice math teacher and i hope i get him as a teacher latter on in math.
super chill, super helpful. He doesnt get mad if you dont understand, he gets mad at himself for not explaining it properly. He understands that math isnt for everyone. plus i think he tokes it.
I have never learned a thing in math class until I had Mr. B. He is the best teacher I have ever had. He has more patience than any one I know. Say goodbye to your math anxiety, Mr. B makes you love it!
Best Math teacher ever. One of the Best teachers I have had ever. He never stops smiling.
superb math teacher! if you have math anxiety, you won't after mr.bertens class. he is so patient, kind, & excellent at explaining. best math teacher so far & funny too!
Best teacher hands down. He gives a fair amount of homework, but goes over everything thoroughly. If you don't get something, he'll go over it until you do. He's always happy, jokes around, makes you comfortable. I would STRONGLY recommend this teacher to anybody who needs to take math!
A commendable professor, who happens to know his stuff in mathematics. He breaks down the steps for students to understand . He manages to find solutions or formulas to help benefit students in studying. I highly recommend this professor when it comes to any sort of math.
A+++ Quality teacher. Will take classes from again.
If u have ever struggled with math then mr berten is just what u need!!! i honestly hated math until i took his class! he is so good at teaching and is crystal clear... we have quizzes on fridays and they are only 3 problems!!! go to class and do your hw and youll do well! super nice teacher!!!!!
Wow, Mr. Bertens is an excellent teacher. He never takes role, but it is somewhat manditory to go to class if you want to learn. His teaching skills are great, he is really cool and really funny. Great teacher! You will learn in his class and have fun.
he's the best teacher ever. i had his class for to sem.and i got an "A" in his class. Guys if you want to have a good grade i recommend to take his class and you will be ok, but you have to work hard.I never had a bad grade in his class. Also, good thing about him, he is soo funny. He drop the lowest grade.
I highly recommend this class for anyone that is willing to learn new things. His teaching skills are very clean and concrete. Hardly takes attendence but need to be there for his lectures. His quizzes are short but takes a lot of thinking process so take good notes! If you want a good grade and a fun teacher i highly recommend to take his class!
Mr.Bertens is the best professor EVER!!! You should really take his class. He is funny, cool, and very nice. He would help and explain clearly if you ask him question. It's never boring in his class. There are quizzes but as long as you attend lectures and do homework, you will be fine. Exams are okay, not too easy, not too hard. Take Mr.Bertens!
VERY GOOD PROFESSOR
Matt is an outstanding math teacher and just an all around interesting person. He makes the concepts easy to understand and is very approachable if you have a challenge. His quizzes are straight from the homework, SO DOING THE HOMEWORK = A's on quizzes and that's a huge portion of your overall grade. Oh, and he's uniquely adorable! :-)
Mr. Berten's personality is awesome. He's very down to earth but he tends to get off subject very easily. If you're taking elementary algebra for the first time I recommend you take Mrs. Bravewoman. Take Mr. Bertens only if you are familiar with algebra beause he can be confusing. I mostly taught myself from the book.
I had the most unbearable crush on Mr. Bertens when I was in his class. He has a great sense of humor and an infectiously positive attitude. I wish I could take him again for advanced algebra because he was a really good teacher, but it was torture feeling so giddy and adolescent on account of such ethically "iffy" desires.
Good teacher. He actually applies the math to real life and gets in depth with it so you can understand. Doesn't count attendence and doesn't require you to turn in hw. Tests are easy if you pay attention in class. For the quzzes he uses probs from the hw and it usually only has 3 questions.
He is the best teacher in the CCSF.
He is a very nice teacher. His explanations are very clear and everyone can understand them. The quizes are 50% of the grade and they are made of homework problems. This makes his class easy to pass and you can miss a few classes as long as someone can tell you what the homework was.
Matt is a great teacher and is very fair. I call him the zen mathematician because he creates this tranquil math atmosphere. His voice is soft and hypnotic. He's cute and hilarious, too.
Bertens rocks. Plain and simple. I hated math before his class and now... well I still hate math, but seriously, he actually made it easy. His lectures are very clear and he's a funny guy as well. Tests were short and to the point and his class totally prepared me for Geometry and Math 90. Highly recommended.
I ♥ Mr. Bertens..my first A in math ever, hes amazing! he's patient with his students doesn't try to overwhelm and the best part no chapter test!! only quizzes which make up half your grade and of course MT and Final..trust hes the best math teacher ever..do your homework for his class and don't be afraid to ask him questions you should do fi
Matt is an ok teacher, but don't take him in the summer because he goes very fast like 3 sections a day and 2 ch a week. He doesn't return emails, even though he said that it the best way to contact him. Doesn't give feedback on quizzes or tests. he is helpful in class somewhat, fair caus he drops the lowest quiz grade.
Excellent professor!I have found his class to be a couple of chapters ahead of other classes this semester and I do not feel like he has gone through the material fast at all.Quizes are short and sweet and if you do your homework and attend class you will ace it!Thanks to Mr. Bertens I speak fluent algebraese-something I thought impossible!!
good!
homework and teaching is ok but when it comes to grading suck like hell.
BEST MATH PROFESSOR (or PROFESSOR) I'VE EVER HAD IN MY WHOLE LIFE. TAKE HIM! Had him for Math 90. I've always hated math, but he makes things easy! He is helpful and dedicated to his students. Grades are based on occasional quizzes 50%, Midterm 25%, and Final 25%. He is a gift from God.
I was impressed with his clarity and demeanor for the entire duration of the class. I had a few other great math teachers in the 7 continuous semesters of math I took @ CCSF, But Bertens was the best! His format of quizzes based on HW with only 2 exams worked very well to keep me doing daily HW, and therefore learning at a manageable pace.
Well I'm actually shocked that everybody recommends this professor. I took his 110B class last semester, and I think that most students are confusing his personality with his teaching skills! He's a REALLY nice and funny guy, but he sucks as a teacher. He does a good job explaining simple stuff, but avoids explaining complicated concepts.
Excellent teacher! I used to hate math, but after taking math 835 with him, I changed my mind about math. He is very helpful and explains everything clearly. I'm still taking his class, and will be taking all his other math classes.
hmmm in the beginning I wasn't sure and was uncomfortable with the class, but now with over 1/2 of the kids gone I'm glad to say I enjoy the class. No one does the homework, do the homework and you will get an A. If you don't care, then don't bother.
I took his math 840 class and it was a breeze (A+). Things didn't quite go as well in math 860 due to the fact that he started way ahead in the book. I was really expecting the 860 class to be a smooth transition from 840. I didn't even expect much review, but I felt that he really jumped ahead an unreasonable amount so I eventually had to drop :(
He has inspired me to take Calculus III. He is da bomb. I can't wait for Math 90 now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
a total of 8 quizzes with 3 questions each, midterm and final. he doesn't pick up homework, and attendance is optional Matt makes math easy to understand, take his class if math is not your thing!!! and he is cute too!!
Matt is incredible! He's always keeping the class engaged, wants every student to succeed, and makes a point to demonstrate how the learned concepts are applicable to certain professions. Keep up with the homework, be attentive in class, and be sure to ask questions: You'll do great!
This class was cool. I learned a lot from him and I recommend students taking his class. We had quiz's and a couple of tests. No homework though. Take him if you plan on studying often or else you will be lost in the materials. Overall a great teacher.
If you hate math, Mr Bertens class is the one to take. He does a great job of explaining the text. DO THE HOMEWORK, and it really helps to attend the classes because he explains some of the harder concepts (just don't get him started on surfing...:))
BEST prof I've ever had. He knows his stuff AND succeeds at passing that knowledge to his students. He won't move on until you understand; he teaches in a way that anyone can understand. He's also very chill, easygoing, treats you like an adult. 8-10 quizzes, hw not graded but he only uses hw problems in his quizzes so if you do the hw, you're set.
really an amazing teacher! he's got great teaching skills and seriously has the talent to make everyone laugh, yet make righteous comments if you're on the wrong side.
Quiz worth 50% of grade but they are all straight from the HW. The midterm was pretty hard cause it was so long. But then the final exam was too easy. It was his first time teaching Differential Equations and admitted that he had a tough time estimating the amount of time that students should take to solve each problem...
i took his 110a 110b 125,he is good professor
MAtt was great. Took his 110 B class and really learned a lot. Fair grader but does expect a lot from his students. I put in a lot of work for the class but afterwards would totally recommend him. No calculators so get ready to re-learn long division, haha.
The most amazing teacher in math. He is such a good teacher. Midterm was okay although the final was very difficult however anyone can pass if they study.
I thought he was pretty good.
Great teacher! Highly advise that you attend all classes and do ALL homework he assigns if you intent on passing the class. Bertens kept class interesting, was very thorough, clear explainations, interlaced with a great sense of humor!
I've always thought that you study hard, do the homework, ask questions to understand, then when it comes time for the test all that hard work pays off. In his class it DOES! I love having all my studying and preparation pay off, you will too. Midterm & Final is EXTRA hard, so study EXTRA hard (not like his weekly quizzes).
I took his class 2 semesters ago and he was amazing! Math was never my subject but after taking this class, I learned so much and it says its only Advanced Algebra , but trust me its way more than that. Quizes and Tests are hard but hes a nice grader. Make sure you do your homework and you will pass with flying colors! Definitely a fun class!
Professor Bertens is the most AWESOME math teacher :) I took his math 110C,120, and 125 and I really enjoyed every moment of it. He was very willing to help during his office hours. Math 125 was great thanks to professor Bertens.
He gives weekly quizes based on the homework (3 questions only) and two exams (10 questions only) and no reviews before exams. He writes small and somewhat soft spoken, usually his notes are all over the place. He assumes you already know the formulas and how to do the problems. He goes too fast for someone who isn't bright in math. Don't recommend!
He is really clear on his topic. He also uses examples on reality to relate to math. Funny, laid back, and patient. If you don't understand something, he would explain it to you. Quizzes almost every week. It's somewhat easier to learn math the way he teaches it.
I took his class over the summer and it was 3 hours long. Mr. Bertens has a great sense of humor so that kept everyone entertained. Very helpful, clear, explains everything, and overall a very good teacher. There was tests every week but if you go to class, you will know the material. Doing the hw is a big help but he doesn't collect or check it
Matt is a great teacher. He is nice but also cool. His teaching method is very easy to understand. Quizzes are always very easy with a lot of time, come straight from homework.
Best math teacher I have had in my entire life. Unlike other teachers, he shows you the reasoning behind math. First time in my life that I completely understand and actually learn math. Excellent, excellent, excellent!!
Great Teacher!, Period.
BEST Math teacher you will find on campus! I'm taking him for FALL 2012. He knows how to keep you awake and focused during 2 hours of Math. He explains everything clearly and quizzes and tests all come from homework! He has a great, great sense of humor and is quite charming. Awesome teacher. If you hate Math, I recommend taking Bertens. [:
Amazing teacher! Always very helpful and kind to his students. Highly reccomended.
Mr. Berten can always interpret your questions clearly. All you need to do is finish your homework and prepare your questions. Then he won't disappoint you. Besides, Mr. Berten can apply the knowledge of math in other area, such as physics and computer science. If you are taking any other courses, taking Berten's course will give you inspiration.
Matt Bertens is a great instructor with a nice personality. Tests are straight from homework. He also spends a great deal of time to go over any homework problems you have for him .I'm not good at math but I find his tests are super easy. A's are attainable. Matt is also a surfer which makes him a very cool instructor.
I absolutely adore him. <3
PROF BERTENS IS THE BEST MATH TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD. HIS LECTURES ARE SO CLEAR. THE PROBLEMS ON HIS TESTS ARE VERY SIMILAR TO THE HW, SOMETIMES THE SAME PROBS. HE GIVES GREAT EXAMPLES IN CLASS. HE ANSWERS HW Q'S AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS. HE'S LIKE THE PERFECT MATH TEACHER TO HELP YOU SUCCEED IN CALCULUS.
This professor it's very clear and patient as long as you try hard, his tests are straight forward, personally he inspired my new found interest in math, imaginary numbers rule!
wonderful man. Made class fun! always could clearly interpret my questions. He also covered a wide range of topics for those who didn't come in with a strong math back round. He's literally the best teacher I've ever had.
GREAT MATH TEACHER with extra tidbits of incredibly interesting information. He also tells great stories about chalk.
Best math teacher ever!!! He's very clear with examples. Ask a question and you will get an answer that makes total sense back. You will be a math expert before class ends! Funny dude too. I stick with what works and I'm glad he teaches Trig and Calculus. Highly recommended!
He is the best math teacher in my life. He explain things very clearly which makes me understand the lecture very well. I used to hate math and just find it difficult. But Matt just make me feel like math is easy as long as you understand it!! He is kind , helpful and charming :) The two hours lecture passes quick everyday!
Mr. B is the best math teacher at ccsf! Crystal clear on lectures and does not make you feel stupid for asking a question even if it's the most asked question in class. Breaks everything down and makes you understand math!
Very clear on what he is teaching. Puts a lot of emphasis on the textbook, so be prepare to read. His final is short, almost too easy (I was able to do it twice within the time permited to get a perfect score.)
He is the man. If I could describe the best math teacher he would be it. Take his classes without hesitation.
Best teacher ever! Super clear, and of course, suuuuuuuuper charming))))
Mr. Bertens is a great teacher. He is very enthusiastic about what he teaches, and it shows. He breaks up most of the testing into small quizzes, midterm and final. He is charming and will make you laugh.
Bertens is a great teacher. I find him to be very clear, and fair. There's work to be done in Calculus, a lot of pencil pushing. Bertens makes it bearable. His lecture is fun and entertaining. I'm glad to have taken his class.
Matt is a great teacher!! You can tell he genuinely cares about helping his students understand the material. He provides lots of in class participation. He keeps the lectures relevant to what your working on at the time, And helps to create open respectful learning environment. A truly excellent teacher.
Very interesting as a teacher and as a person. Explains very clear and loves to answer questions. Very fair and friendly.
This guy is great. He makes the class very enjoyable. He sets a comfortable pace. Ask any question you might have, he'll guide you to the solution. Just do your work and you'll have a great time learning.
Dropped his 125 twice. Many of the other students seemed to breeze right through, but I really struggled before getting out to save my GPA. Interesting guy, and some of the lectures were great. Skips around the book in a way I found hard to follow. When I tried to meet with him for help, I felt like I was a very low priority to him.
I HATE MATH! but I love Mr. Bertens as a teacher. He helped me understand a subject that I felt could never happen. If math is not your best subject, definitely take him because he will help you understand without making you feel stupid.
Matt is awesome! He assigns a good amount of homework but it's helpful because the quizzes are based on the homework. Also he is very patient and his exams are short.
I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed this class (Math 60), and it was because of Professor Bertens. His lectures are interesting, his instruction clear, and he goes off on funny, random tangents about surfing, chalk, and his dislike of technology. Tests are not overly difficult. Would highly recommend as a math professor.
For anyone that has difficulty with math, I recommend Matt's classes. He might digress from the subject, going off on small existential tangents fairly often, however this made class much more enjoyable than otherwise. He is very clear, helpful, and will answer all of your questions. Truly a gem.
Mr. Bertens is the most uninspired and laziest teacher I have ever encountered. He always seems burnt out with no energy or interest in teaching. Maybe he used to be into teaching , but really doesn't seem to care about it anymore. Not professional, never prepared, usually late for class, very unorganized, unhelpful. I had to teach myself wbook.
Mr. Bertens is inspiring and really works hard to help you. If you put in the effort he will make you a priority. He knows the material well and relates it to the real world. He has a calm disposition and an aura that's truly unique and will rub off on you. He's excellent at teaching those who struggle with math. He is an amazing person. Best Prof
Professor Matt was such an inspiration. He clearly explains class material and gives good examples so everyone in class is able to understand. A lot of homework absolutely, but as he says "practice is what is going to help you in math". I noticed his willing to help everyone. I enjoyed his class and mainly I learned a lot of math oh yeah!
He is the best math teacher. I hope he teaches all calculus courses. :)
He is the best Professor ever! Dont believe negative postings here. I would recommend only him! Take his classes you wont regret! Thank you Pr Bertens!
Post-calculus, I think Matt is about as good as anyone can hope for in an upper-division teacher. He expects a level of care and respect for the material paralleling that which he gives to making linear algebra palatable. Grades reasonably if you're dedicated. Granted, studying with him can be incredibly rewarding, but you get what you put in.
Most of his explanations are unclear and make little sense. He can't seem to keep track of his lesson plans, unorganized and sloppy. He wastes so much class time talking about irrelevant subjects. If you're serious about learning math, don't take his class, there are much better teachers available.
prof bertens is amazing! Probably one of the best profs at CCSF. Kind, interesting, and approachable, he makes math interesting. Try even a little bit and you'll pass. added bonus: bearded bertens is pretty hot. Take his class, you won't regret it.
Cool teacher if you want to pass calculus. Bonus if you have trouble sleeping. His voice and low energy will put you right out.
Pleasant to listen to and goes through homework questions. The homework questions determine the content of exams/quizzes. Bertens made calc 1 enjoyable and prepares you for calc 2.
He is very great helpful teacher, funny too. I tool Math 40 with he is very clear and helpful never get mad if you ask alot of questions. the quizzes are similar to the homework, which he do them all. so take with him will not regret. pretty easy class.
Mr. Bertens explains why this math will work and where they came from! it's interesting but sometimes he will play around with one tricky question for the whole period. He's helpful and willing to help too! There are around six quizzes, 1 midterm and 1 final. One of the best teacher I ever had.
He is a good teacher and I would take him again.
I took his online class and it was awesome! I was very rusty when it came to algebra but Mr. Bertens taught the class in a very informative, encouraging way. If you do the homework and watch the videos you'll be golden. If you're getting lost, reach out to Mr. Bertens. He is more than happy to help and is very available! Great teacher!
Matt's 120&125 were two of my favorite classes since entering college; for the first time I'm actually enjoying math. He's a sweetheart plus his vibe is infectious. Lectures are thoughtful/thorough, and I found diff eq's surprisingly doable- exams keep it real with questions that stress conceptual understanding as opposed to rote technical prowess.
This person is by far the best teacher CCSF has to offer. If you go to his class and listen to him, he has a way of explaining how to solve problems in a way that makes it impossible to not understand. Short lectures and lots of time in the class to do the homework, if you get stuck he's there to help you. A sincerely wonderful person.
He is an easy going, nice, kind instructor. I recommend him if you want to learn good math. You will pass his class as long as you do homework, quizzes, exam. His lecture is easy to understand and very clear.
Matt Bertens is the best instructor I have ever had! He wants you to pass and understand the concept always. He will challenge you until you understand. No homework to turn in but make sure you know it.
Mr Bertens is an excellent math professor. His lectures are super clear and engaging. He is clear about what you need to study and he explains mathematical concepts in depth (proofs and stuff) which I find really helps to understand the material. On top of that, the guy's hilarious and he freakn surfs.
I took Calculus 2 with Mr. Bertens and it made me switch from majoring in physics to majoring in math. one of the best math professors I ever had. I am now working on my masters and I still have had only a couple of professors that I consider as good of a teacher as him.
Bertens is so far, the best professor that I have come across! I was skeptical about taking math online but with him, it was the best decision I could have made. His homemade lecture videos are very easy to understand. Although there are 2 assignments per week, each worth about 20-40 points, each one is only a tiny tiny tiny fraction of your grade.
This guy is the best. I took an online algebra refresher class from him and the videos he makes are bombproof. He lays things out so perfectly that by the time you hit the in-class tests, you are totally in the zone and can zip right through them The homework can be challenging, but you literally can't go wrong with Mr. B.
This prof is a real gem. I was worried about taking Math online, but his class was even better than most of my in-person classes. His personal videos that he makes are very clear and easy to understand. A lot of homework but that actually helped me learn. Gives extra credit too. If you're not willing to put the time in, don't expect an A though.
he is really a great professor, he explains things in such a way that you just understand it so well. I really wish he could teach all of my math courses and i certainly encourage anyone to take his class.
I took his Math 40 online class because I just can't do the in person classes knowing that I have to be on campus every weekdays. I work two jobs and if you think Math is a hard course? I highly recommend taking his class! Everything seems easy and you only have to meet once which is the final exam! I'm planning on taking Math 60 with him too!
If you do the work, you'll pass. Watch the videos, do every single homework assignment, and study for the final. You will pass! Plus, he is a great guy who loves Math and cares about his students.
I took Mr.B for summer & It turned out better than expected. Mr.B has great videos and if you follow through you will be just fine. There's HW but it's only 10%, If you watch his videos and take notes you will be able to pass his quizzes & exams. The final is easy (40% of grade) & you can take a full page (back & front) of notes! I say go for it!
I took his MATH40 online course and really enjoyed it. His videos are clear and concise, and so are his expectations. Participation in the forums is mandatory but he responds more often than not and is quick to respond. I plan on taking his MATH60 course as well!
Simple he is grade teacher for all math just do your homework and you be fine.
Great Math teacher and always responding quickly! Will take one of his class again!
Terrific teacher:hilarious, interesting, smart and opened-mind. Even though both math class are not easy, you will never feel sorry that you took these casses. Lectures base on real evidences with good simple explanations. Tests maybe heavy only if you dont do homework that is a lot be given for every class. However, all this homework's very useful
I was a little nervous in taking a math class online. The mandatory forums and his videos took a short time for me to get used to. I just did all the homework and meet deadlines. The forums and videos is very helpful, the website for the class is very helpful as well. Overall, a great and fair teacher. Signed up for his MATH60 and Im so ready for i
This is my last semester with Professor Bertens and I hope I can find someone as clear and helpful as him. Two homeworks a week and a quiz every other week. His instructional videos is very helpful, he will teach you helpful ways that would make sense.
Great teacher! This was my first time taking a math class online and it was an amazing experiance! Everything was super clear and easy!
Take it. OMG I have such a hard time staying awake in class but online I understand things a whole lot more. Not only because it seemed to go my pace but because if I had an issue with a problem I could not solve I would add it to the discussion board and then as a class everyone would help solve it. I learned a lot no lie.
Taking his online intermediate algebra class is doable even while working full-time. He creates videos which give you the basics and book he uses it helpful. Also forums where students help either is really awesome. I would take him again. Final in person exam you can bring your own 1 page notes. Problems resembled Homework.
Took his online summer class. Being that it was a shorter semester, the workload was a little heavier. As long as you put in the work, and do everything on time, you will do good on the final (it was in-person). I learned a lot, wish he taught Stats.
I took this teacher for Math 40 and Math 60! He is very good teacher ! Takes his time to explain assignments and communicates with the students properly. Add his class is worth your time and youll learned more.
I've taken his Math60 class before the reason why I didn't hesitate to take his Math 90 this summer. His grading is clear through web-assign you're able to monitor your grades based on your work. The forum on canvas helps you to have a better understanding which Mr. bertens are very helpful to help you solve a problem. No regret taking his class.
two homework assignments each week, one was due on wed, the other due on sat. prof bertens has good instructional videos posted each week and each video is for each hw assignment. discussion post is rlly helpful bc you can post which problem you are struggling on and either prof bertens or a classmate will explain the process and give u the answer
easy money for him with no effort since he doesnt teach. Each week he post a few brief videos made in 2018 showing him working on problems, with no context. we have to post in the forum if we dont get it, only to just get answers from him or student with no explanation. just the answer... u learn nothing. lots of test not enough time to finish
offers a max of 5min office hours. timed quizzes, hw doesnt match the youtube videos he post on weekly canvas, so your own your own relying on classmates for help for all hw cuz he is extremely unreliable and terrible. awful, dont recommend at all unless u dont mind learning on ur own and spending hours asking classmates for help
Maybe he is a better teacher in person but I have learned very little from this online course. Some problems are explained through videos but many of the videos are extremely confusing and unhelpful. Plus $80 for mandatory WebAssign membership even though the point of City College is to be free/cheap and accessible to all. Worst online course imo
This online course is not challenging. When you encounter a question you don't understand, you must ask it. You can take notes and do all your homework, which is beneficial for the final exam.
Professor Berten's class was very well organized, and the book was online and easy to use. There was a lot of reading for the class; however, it was easy to digest, and their examples were easy to follow. He is also very involved in the discussions and helps out by elaborating when the material is confusing.
I learned from my own when I took this class. It's one of those teachers that hardly do things since weekly lectures are reused from prerecorded previous semesters, and discussions were annoying that I dealt with so many classmates posting questions at the last moments before deadline. Final exam was insane.... doing everything in 2 hours hectic
All class materials are online with 30–40 quizzes weekly, all multiple choice, no time limit, and 3 attempts each. You only attend class biweekly for extra credit activities. Tons of extra credit overall. The final is just 5% of your grade. He's super helpful, explains well, and is very mindful of students.
