A teacher that really cares about his students.
very very picky about wording on exams; exams are almost too long
Very interested in the student's learning. Exams are a little long.
explains concepts very well, genuine care for student's understanding
He conveys the topics well.
teaching very structured, topics presented well, comprehensive exams

Matt is a great teacher and really loves what he does
I had college Cal before taking his class and still learned alot that says alot
Very picky about wording, but overall, you learn the material very well!

material hard, but truly concerned w/ students learning. Best teacher I have had
He is an outstanding teacher, probably the best I've had. If you can, take him.
Matt is the best. He made me appreciate math so much more.
Matt is the most friendly prof. I've had. His lectures are very understandable.
Very picking about the wording, but you definitely learn the materials.
Very friendly guy and great prof. Way TOO much homework! Can't do everything.
Work was hard but really learned something when I finished the class
He is a really awesome teacher!! Is clear in what he expects & in his teaching!
you learn so much and he cares about his students a great deal try to take him
Excellent professor. Assigns a lot of stuff, but it helps to connect key ideas.
Outstanding prof, but VERY detail oriented. Learned alot
Awesome person, great teacher, good class! Take Him!
He is hard as hell, makes you feel stupid in his office, very picking on wording
Matt is a great teacher, and he is a cutie:)
Matt is a very good teacher. He really knows how to clarify hard concepts.
genuinely appreciates your effort. very approachable. enthusiastic; class is fun

good prof, but you better go see him during office hours or he doesn't like you
Good teacher. Don't make him mad or he'll make your semester miserable.
Portfolio Problems are a bear, but Matt is a great prof. Take if you can.

very clear, good guy
Good Prof if you want to work
Fantastic prof will help you if you are willing work. Expect to work hard.
Tough class, but you'll learn a lot. Take Matt if you can!
A lot of work, but best Calc prof I've ever had...ever! Very good at explaining
Matt is picky about little things. He's rude and makes you feel stupid.Bad Prof
picky...hard too...be prepared to work a ton!!! nice guy though
I don't have him for math, I only have him for fresh.sem, but he's still cool:)
I have Matt for Fres. Sem. & he's a great guy and always will to help!

A little hard.. Wants you to learn and is ver helpful. A great teacher.
This is a difficult course, and the tests are tricky. However, Matt makes is enjoyable, and helps you really understand the concepts, not just memorize some integrals. Get Matt fot 202.
One of the best professors I've ever had. (Linear Algebra II, spring semester 03)
This class was a lot of work since it was in the summer, but he prepares excellent notes. Extremely helpful.
He's a super nice guy and willing to help you as much as you want and need. Be prepared for a very tough class though. He expects you to work hard through the whole semester. Great prof...but don't take him if you aren't ready to work hard.
This guy works your butt off! If you want to work 2-3 hours at lest every other day to keep up with him this class is for you. He knows what he is doing but makes you feel like an idiot sometimes.
Matt is the best math teacher I've ever had. He is very sincere, with unlimited math knowledge. Lots of HW, but his in class hands-on learning approach is very helpful. Tests are pretty tough. I got a C.
Matt is horrible. Don't take his classes. He makes you feel dumb, there's tons of work, he tailors to 1 or 2 students in his classes. If you're a guy, you're in luck...he tailors to them. Grading is horrible! Get out if you can.
Matt is one of the better math professors that I've had at GVSU. It's a difficult subject but Matt makes geometry fun. Quite a bit of homework but nothing too overwhelming.
Matt is definitely the most helpful professor I've ever had. His class does require a lot of work, but you'll learn much more in the end. Don't take him if you're looking for an easy A.
Be ready to work, but he sets you up for success. Know that no matter how hard you work on this course, he works even harder.
He is horrible. Don't ever take him, he makes you feel dumb if you don't know something, and his teats are hard. If you can take another professor
How can you not like him? He is so helpful! He will meet with you anytime. He has great notes and teaches at a great level. Very prepared. Love him.
Don't take 210 with Matt--he is the worst teacher to have for it! He is very anal! It's hard to even get a C with him, no matter how hard you work! He may be hot, but his class is a not! You go to his office for help, he gives vague answers! Save u $!
There iss a lot of work outside of this class that takes up a lot of your time. The time spent in class was alway helpful and Matt kept you entertained. He is a great professor...take him if you can.
I really did not understand how to do the proof problems and when I went to his office to ask him questions on how to do it, he would give me what he called a hint and then told me to go home and think about it! I still had no idea what to do. Unhelpful!!
If you cannot learn mathematics from Matt Boelkins, you cannot learn mathematics.
I would take him for every math class if I could. He requires a lot of work, but he is always there until you understand it. If he seems to show favortism it is to those who are there to learn and take the class seriously.
great professor. always there to help with any questions and actually wanted students to not only get the material but understand why it works. made it very clear how grading works and what is expected on exams and the final. if you can't learn math from matt you're not going to learn it anywhere else.
Not helpful due to him always saying "I'll give you a hint" not all students are there to become the next math equations maker! Maybe if he would test on the idea instead of a complex or hidden version of the main idea it would be more fair!
He's a great guy and he's really hot.
a lot of work but he explains everything very well. he has a lot of office hours and is willing to help but he is not always clear during these times. the homework assignments are a lot of work, make sure to start right away. overall, good professor.
very good teacher, very excited about the subject, wants his students to actually learn the material, so he won't give you an answer directly, he'll make you think about it. Tests are very difficult, even if you study, know the stuff and think you'll do well.
He is the best math professor at GVSU of the 6 math professors I have had here. I have always found math professors difficult or boring to pay attention to. Not Beolkins, he is the man. He is able to make differential equations look easy.
Although I rated him high, and he is a good teacher, I do not personally like his teaching style. He is sort of like a "micromanager" and is always looking over your shoulder and giving out work sheets. Honestly I prefer to pay attention in class and half understand it, then cram for an hour before the test. His style is not good for that.
Great professor! Only math professor I liked at GVSU. Really helps you not just know the material but understand it. Both classes I took with him were alot of work though.
boelkins is a good man, highly interested in and knowledgable about calculus. however, his teaching style involves hard exams, tons of homework, and very fast-paced lectures. he grades harshly and wants you to figure out the answers to your own questions. he is a good prof, but a hard one. take him if you grasp new subject matter easily.
I don't feel like I'm exaggerating when I say he's one of GVSU's finest profs. His class is difficult, but fair, and you will learn the material VERY well. He also makes class worth attending with his dynamic teaching style, and even has pre-typed notes to fill in. He cares a lot about his students too, and motivates them to do their best.
One of the best profs. I've had at grand valley. He really knows how to communicate and explain things well. I took this class in the summer and it is a tough summer class because of the credit load, but prof. boelkins really helped make it easier
The absolute best professor that i have ever had at GVSU. It was a tough class, but it was so worth it. IF you put in the effort that is required of this class, you will feel very rewarded. He makes sure that you understand the material and cares about your success in the class. TAKE HIM!
Matt is the best professor I have ever had. He will make you work and think, so if you don't want to work for your grade and if you want to slack off, he's probably not the prof. you want to take. Take him if you take your education seriously. Best prof. ever.
An amazing instructor!!! Very compassionate about mathematics. Very helpful during office hours. Has high expectations, but you will be a better math student for it.
My favorite GVSU Professor by far. He is very helpful and willing to help you out the best he can. He will not just give you answers however, but help guide you so that you can learn it on your own. I definately recommend taking him for whatever math courses you can. He requires a lot of work, but it pays off in the long run!
I couldn't stand the guy. He completely belittled me and my friend in the class felt the same way. I would be happy never seeing him ever again.
AWESOME prof! Take him if you get the chance! Extremely helpful, office door is always open, connects 210 concepts to other classes. Organized. Very hard grader, but you'll be a better math student if you take him. I looked forward to this class every day! If you take it, start your proof portfolio EARLY! GREAT CLASS!
Gives awesome insight into concepts and explains topics thoroughly before moving on.
I loved this class! Matt is super helpful and encouraging. One of my fav. professors. Super nice. Gives handouts everyday, whcih really help with learning the material.
Matt is an awesome professor. He really knows what he's doing. The material is really hard but he's really good at teaching it. I did pretty bad in the class but I don't blame him for it. I would definitely take him again if I had the chance.
Professor Boelkins is one of the best professors you'll ever take. He is extraordinarily helpful in an out of class, explains things so anyone can understand it, and gives a reasonable amount of work. Bottom line, if you can take Professor Boelkins for any class, do it.
Very intelligent individual. He tries to teach the big picture rather than specific problems, which is essential for math. If you want to pass, study, study, study! He expects it, and you will not do good if you just skim on through. He has a lot of patience and understanding. He tries to keep the work load at a reasonable level. I'd recommend.
Prof. Boelkins is extremely organized. You never have to worry about him not returning papers or not knowing where he is in the text. He makes note sheets for you to use during class, which makes it a lot easier. Boelkins will definitely challenge you! But you will learn a lot, and he is always in his office if you need help.
very organized, professional, and helpful. one of my favorite professors at GV.
Easily the hardest class I've ever taken, and that's exactly what I expected from Matt. He's probably one of the smartest people I know. If you don't understand something, he'll find a new way to explain a concept so that you do understand. The only way you'll get an A is if you work harder than you ever have before.
Boy, this class was tough. However, the work was definitely worth it since I learned a lot. Boelkins is one of the most challenging yet excellent teachers at GV. If you are a highly motivated student who wants to learn from an exceptional prof, take this class.
Thanks to Matt, after years of studying, I FINALLY understand the Runge-Kutta method for approximating the solution of a differential equation. This guy "rocks" as a teacher, and I want to be just like him when I grow up!
Favorite professor from GV! Awesome guy, real genuine personality and always in a positive mood. He is probably one of the smartest people I know. Expects a lot but it's not impossible with a full schedule. Team homework assignments can be a drag and exams can get tricky at times but not too bad. Would definitely recommend taking him.
If you think you can get by in this class by only studying a few hours...think again or find another prof. His tests are RIDICULOUSLY hard. I mean RIDICULOUS. He takes points off for EVERYTHING (especially notation errors). I think he's a good professor, but I wouldn't recommend him unless you plan on being a Calc. 2 expert. He's really tough.
Boelkins was very nice, and he had a huge passion for what he was doing, which I admired. But, his team homeworks and exams were close to impossible. I went into a test feeling prepared and ready, and came out of the test feeling horrible and knew I failed. I think he expects too much of his students sometimes. But he is an overall nice guy.
Boelkins is a good teacher and I did learn a lot but he is the hardest prof I have ever had. His expectations are way too high for a 200 level class. No matter how hard you work it is almost impossible to pass. About all of the people in my class didn't pass and had to retake the class. If you take this class I would recommend someone else!!!
Professor Boelkins is simply the most brilliant man I have ever met. He is very nitpicky with his grading but he does so because he is genuinely interested in making his students the best mathematicians he physically can, and his passion for the subject makes his class so incredibly interesting.
Even though the work load is high, there is a purpose to everything he assigns. He only intends for you to succeed and would never assign something meaningless. He is very helpful, very effective in explaining concepts, and very passionate about teaching. I look forward to taking him again!
He is very willing to help and explain anything that is unclear to anyone. There is a lot of work sometimes but every assignment has a purpose in understanding the material there is never any busy work.
Professor Boelkins is one of the greatest professors and people you'll ever meet. He is brilliant and his enthusiasm for math is contagious. He gives A LOT of work, but it is necessary for you to learn the material. Three tips for 210: 1. Take Professsor Boelkins. 2. Go to his office hours FREQUENTLY. 3. START YOUR PROOF PORTFOLIO ASAP!
This is by far the HARDEST class I have ever taken at Grand Valley. Professor Boelkins is willing to help you, however, he makes judgements within the first weeks of whether you are capable of doing well in the class - and does not change these judgements regardless of how hard you work. Nearly impossible to pass.
Dr. Boelkins is hands down the best professor I have ever had. He does everything in his power to give you the tools to learn and succeed. Easily accessible in office hours too. You just have to put the work in for it, but it's definitely worth it.
Prof. Boelkins is an awesome professor. He is willing to help you out, and is flexible if need be. He is, however, uncompromising in his expectations - you will get lots of "notation matters" notes on assignments/exams. He assigns A LOT of homework - more than any other class I've taken at GV. It's frustrating to spend all my time on a cognate.
He's a great guy. Really helpful, but if you're struggling a ton he will get annoyed with you easily. I went to his office hours multiple times and I always left feeling like he was making it clear I was wasting his time. I wouldn't take a course with him again.
This was THE worst math class I've ever taken. Instead of having lectures, Prof B just gives you groups and hope you figure it out for yourself. Coming into this class with an A in every other math course I've taken, and not doing well in this class, I STRONGLY encourage you not to take this prof.
He seems reasonable and very knowledgeable at first, which he is very knowledgable. However, with the "daily prep", Labs, problem of the week, webwork, studying and normal homework, the work for this course is entirely unreasonable. He is ready to help, but his expectations are much too high.
Professor Boelkins is by far my favorite professor I've had here at GVSU. He also is the TOUGHEST professor I've ever had too, and his courses are not easy. Although, his classes are tough he always makes time for his students and puts students first in his class. You will learn a lot, and start the portfolio EARLY! Great life advice too!
MTH 210 with Prof. Boelkins shaped me as a student. I loved it. It was so hard, definitely not a commitment I would be up for every semester, but invaluable as a one-time experience. Learned more than I can quantify: math, discipline, self-educating/self-learning, work ethic, and how to meet high expectations.
One of the worst professor I have taken. Does not teach well and makes a simple topic so complex and confusing. He puts people on the spot and confuses them if they know the answer. If you're an engineering student, he will talk crap about you and say you don't understand what you're doing. Said I did a disservice to my table for a derivative trick.
Professor Boelkins is an incredibly respected teacher, however his class is extremely difficult. I believe he just assumes his students know the material. His note sheets are not truly notes, its for you to figure out on your own. He is willing to help outside of class so take advantage of his office hours. He grades tough and be prepared to write.
He was a great professor. he does give a lot of homework but he will work with you if you don't clearly understand the topic. he does tend to explain thing in an odd way but allows you to work with other classmates to get a better understanding
Professor Boelkins has been the best math professor I've had at Grand Valley thus far. He assigns a heavy amount of homework but it is expected in a math course. He's always willing to help explain ideas clearly and makes himself available if you have further questions. He's very educated on calculus and math in general.
best professor i've had in college. only thing i dont like is the writing assignments
His class was my favorite college math class. I loved going to class every day.
Professor Boelkins is my favourite teacher Ive ever had in college. His class is extremely difficult but you will learn so much from his class that you will feel much smarter after each class. His proof portfolios demand a lot of work but Boelkins office hours are easily accessible and you can always email him for help. He responds very quickly.
Waaaaaay too much homework. I was drowning. I fell behind a little in class and went to his office hours. He barely had time to see me. When we went through problems and I explained my thinking he asked why I would think something so ridiculous. He put me down even though I was still trying to succeed. Not a nice guy, don't waste the time with him.
Professor Boelkins assigned homework almost every week that took me longer than 8 hours each time. I would get A's in every category except never got higher than a C+ on his exams. He was very picky on answers and would never answer my question when I would ask what he wants. Overall his class is doable but really hard to do well in.
Professor Boelkins is an excellent and passionate professor. Everything in the class was wonderfully organized. My only complaint was the amount of homework we got. If that was toned down, it would have been absolutely perfect. Definitely take this class if you get excited about math and/or looking to get a deep understanding of the subject.
if you have the chance to take Prof Boelkins, DO IT! I have never had a professor care so much about the success of his students. He is a great teacher, well organized, and very motivating. There is a heavy workload in his class, but if you stay consistent and utilize his help, it's very doable. Definitely recommend!
Professor Boelkins is a living legend. I don't enjoy math as a subject, but I loved coming into his class. The way he provides instruction is crystal clear and he does a great job of helping even those of us who struggle with math at times (me) understand the material. Take Professor Boelkins for whatever classes you can, he is so kind and cares!
Great Professor, very friendly, makes it easy to understand. However there is a lot of work, but I took Pre-calc so it was always going to be a lot of work!
Professor Boelkins is amazing and one of the best professors and teachers I have ever had. Yes there is a lot of homework but nothing a person can nor handle and he is always willing to help.
He is the professor that wrote the book for MTH 201 and MTH 202, so he is very knowledgeable on the subject. He lectures very well, stays organized, and grades assignments very quickly. Can be a pretty harsh grader, but he allows for one redo per week on homework assignments and multiple redos for each quiz, both of which are all or nothing.
Professor B was my favorite professor ever. He genuinely cares about his students and helps you actually learn the material and not just memorize it. His teaching style is very interactive and easy to follow along. He always asked if we understood or if we needed him to go back. Literally take him, he is the best. Made calc a 10/10 experience.
Professor Boelkins is the best. All of the hw and quizzes are revisable and graded on a "Mastered" or "Not Yet" scale. His lectures are super interactive and easy to follow. He genuinely cares about every student and will help in any way that he can. He also really encouraged us to meet people in our class and I made a couple good friends.
SUPER nice guy! He's very passionate about mathematics and inspires you to love math too. Very reasonable expectations for class. You will do great in this class if you show up and put effort in. He wants his students to succeed. He's very well respected for a very good reason.
he would sit down with me every one of his office hours and single-handed got me interested in math, best professor at gvsu, hands down
Doctor Boelkins has mastered the art of the mastery grading system. This class is very low stress. Doctor Boelkins makes himself readily available outside of class and is phenomenal at explaining the complex concepts presented in this course.
Top notch prof, arguably the best in the math department. Makes expectations very clear and gives you a fair chance at meeting his learning targets several times. Practical and inspirational, helps you balance personal life and school work.
Professor Boelkins is a pretty good prof! I will say it took me some adjusting to get used to his teaching style. He definitely focusing more on getting us students to explore the material on our own, rather than just giving a lecture. I personally would have liked more lectures but I know it helps us learn more. Also lots of HW, but he is nice!
Professor Boelkins is one of my favorite professors. 204 was the first math class I somewhat enjoyed in undergrad.
Boelkins is an amazing professor. You can tell he really cares about the students and the material. He explains things well, makes sure that everyone is up to speed, and respects students, which makes him easy to work with and to learn from. Lectures made me care about the material, and he made learning fun and easier. Definitely would recommend.
Fantastic Professor, he was very caring and understanding. Gave multiple attempts to pass learning targets. Would 100% take again
Prof Boelkins is awesome! He explains things very well, but if you don't understand, he can work with you at office hours until you do. It is extremely clear that he cares about his students. Textbook is online and free, and it's the first time I've felt like a textbook is actually clear and helpful. Show up and do your best and you'll be fine!
I loved Prof Boelkins. He is very understanding and caring and wants you to succeed in any way possible. It is a difficult class, you have to put a decent amount of work into it to get a good grade. But he lets you resubmit almost any assignment for a better grade. I didn't fully take that to my advantage so I got a C, but a B or A is achievable
A lot of assignments, but very clear on what to do. Excellent feedback and explanations. Helps greatly with questions. Lectures aren't always needed but were quite helpful so go to most. Everything has multiple attempts so nothing to worry about. Exam was easy. Keep track of due dates as there's many. Cares about students.
Professor Boelkins is great - he makes complex topics understandable. The free online textbook is really helpful. Lots of homework, but using resources like unstuck ai made studying easier. Worth taking if you're willing to put in the work.
Such a good professor. Choosing him as you professor will make your understanding of the course content so much easier. Cares about students and their learning, while also challenging them in class.
