Really nice, but very insecure. Not very hard, but you do have to work.
Very helpful and shows interest in teaching, also young and a bright guy. Class covered a lot of material at proper depth, testing was questionable, but Matt was a grad student and had little control I believe.
all you have to do is do the homework and go to the lectures. the class is not that hard at all, matt shows everything and makes it really easy.
Matt is very clear with the information given, and also gives several excellent examples for all the material. It's a good way to help me learn math of any kind.
Matt makes this class very easy as long as you go to lecture.
Really nice and easy going and easy to get help.. But you need to go to class...
A great professor. One of the nicest and most helpful on campus.
Very, very hot.
Class is fairly easy. Downfall is that he does lecture quizes to check attendance.
Horrible handwriting
Matt's a good guy- I'd probably hang with him at the Student Union. Only drawback is that he makes the tests really tricky (so go to class!) and has horrible handwriting.
Matt is NOT a good guy- he comes across like he's a friend to all students, then goes out of his way to make the tests as tricky and difficult as possible. Professors who try to 'trick' students on exams instead of just assessing knowledge= losers
Allright... the quizes are sometimes excessive
Matt was a great teacher and always to help. There are quizzes every week so you have to go to class but he makes learning easy. I would definitely take another class taught by him.
He is seriously one of the nicest guys I've ever met and a very helpful teacher. I am traditionally really bad at math but he has helped me so much. His tests are not at all tricky if you study for them.
bognar's the****... i had him twice and i loved it.
really good teacher, friendly and approachible, easy to understand, one set back is that if you don't understand what he's saying he has trouble rephrasing it in a different way, but that's what TA's are for right?
Hilarious guy - down to earth. Wants to help you.
Real good guy. His tests can be difficult, but even 100s are never out of reach. He spends a good amount of time on the concepts in class, and really tries to make sure people are getting the material. And, really, he is just a good guy all around. You can't go wrong with this guy.
He is the perfect teacher to teach a math GE. He goes out of his way to make the material easy and is very sweet. Really wants to help. His tests have some "tricks" in them, but if you go to lecture they won't be a problem.
Okay he is hilarious- I laughed my ass off. He was always willing to help me out, his tests were challenging but if you study and go to the review sessions, you will succeed. Hes a nice guy, a good teacher, and I would gladly take another one of his classes. I highly recommend him.
hes the man. id recommend this class. hes a hottie too.
Very tough class, but still the most accessible math course at Iowa for those of us who are 'mathematically challenged'. Matt will work with you if you struggle, but having a good TA is essential to doing well in the course.
BEST PROF AT IOWA!!!!
Awesome guy. He is one of the best professors at the U of I. Enough said.
This class was easy, and I am not even a math person. A very friendly prof - stupid U of I, why is he gone?
Good class. Good math credit. Poor speaking skills but had an overall sincerity for his students. He really cared that they understood the material presented.
Best teacher in college
Matt is an excellent professor. He's friendly and very approachable. He seems to genuinely care about whether you understand the material and is always willing to help when you don't. Matt is also a great public speaker- VERY enthusiastic! If you don't smile and/or laugh at least 1X per each class then there's definitely something wrong w/ you! =)
Matt was one of the best instructors I ever had. He makes statistics fun and easy to learn (I've always sucked at stats). I knew exactly what to expect for his exams and quizzes. The homeworks and quizzes really helped me prepare for each exam. Plus his homeworks we not time consuming. My only complaint is that he's a stickler for notation.
Hated the course content... loved the class. Matt Bognar is one of a kind!!!
Why can't every prof be like Matt?
Matt was a great teacher. He was very laid back, but still did a great job relating all the information that he wanted to. The class is much easier with him, and he is very understanding and helpful if you need extra help.
One of the best prof. I've had the university so far. Makes learning stats very easy! Also always willing to help explain.
business stat...he made this hard material extremely easy for me to understand
No Comments
very good professor, makes material easy. sometimes lectures are boring but hes funny and its not so bad.
Pretty good for an intro stats class. I didn't like the curriculum but I don't think he controls that.
Funny guy, really interested in what he teaches. Helpful, keeps lecture somewhat interesting and has a good set of TA's too.
Funny teacher, but class is difficult. Exams are hard, this is my 2nd time taking the class. The first time I took it only 54% out of over 500 got a C- or above. Class is not curved, but as long as you make it to every lecture and attend sections most of the time you'll do fine
Really FUNNY!!! Enjoyable for a stats class, but note that it is pretty hard- make sure you study!!!
Matt rocked my statistical world! I have since taken other stats classes for my major and he was the best prof I have ever had! He will help you whenever you need, he has a cool dog, and I often see him wandering about campus with a smile on his face. Be nice to Matt, he is an awesome person!
his class sucks... take it with someone else if possible
Matt is awesome! One of my best professors this semester!! Loved his little stories. Though this class is pretty difficult, attend all the lectures and discussions and you'll do fine!
Matt is a good teacher, and very very helpful if you go see him during his office hours. This class is a little difficult. His stories are funny but his jokes are rediculous. If you want to pass go to all the lectures and most discussions and you'll be fine.
good prof, but teaches at a slow pace. I fall asleep every lecture. no cureve!
he thinks hes the coolest guy ever, not sure why...
Hilarious. Really needs a girlfriend. Struggling with a candy addiction. Great professor. Quizzes every week, but they help you in the end. Awesome TAs and tons of online help. Takes attendance on occasion. Obsessed with his dog.Only complaint: needs to tell people who are talking to shut up (AKA he's too nice). Loves stats and makes it easy.
I took Stats for Business with him. Really one the best teachers I've had. He does example problems in class that really prepare you for the weekly quizzes, and they can really help your grade. He really knows what he's talking about. He's a charming fellow, and hasn't taught long enough to get burned out.
great professor. exams get gradually harder and the final is pretty impossible-the average was a 54%. do well on the first two exams and you're set. takes attendance occasionaly and has a quiz each week which really helps for the exam.
He is pretty much the greatest Stats teacher you could ever have. He is fun and shows an interest in teaching the class. I would recommend him to anyone.
I have had a horrible experience with Matt Bognar so far. Halfway through the semester, he replaced Rhonda DeCook because of a maternity leave. So far, all Bognar has done is screw us over. Having a pop quiz on the friday before spring break, impossible quizzes, and even going as far as talking trash about "us engineers" to his other classes!
Best professor at Iowa. Very entertaining and a nice guy. He really does need a girl friend and he loves to joke about it. Redo the quizzes you've taken and the previous midterms before the exams and you will do great. I highly recommend this professor.
Great Teacher, Makes the homework and quizes easy and makes class enjoyable. Funny guy.
Great Professor...Really Helpful..Funny
Very nice and helpful prof. If you need to take a stats class, I highly recommend him. He makes class entertaining and he has cute mannerisms!! :)
One of the best professors at the University of Iowa. Take a course from Bognar if you can, you won't regret it!
He was very entertaining and made class worth going to!
Very good professor. Usually keeps lectures semi-interesting. He is very funny in a goofy sort of way and made me laugh almost every lecture. Make sure you go to EVERY lecture.. yes, EVERY one. The examples he gives in class are useful for the exams. Take good notes and do the past exams and fill out a good "crib sheet" and you will do just fine.
Bognar is a cool guy. You can tell that he enjoys teaching stats. The trick is to go to every lecture and follow along with his notes, because that's what you want to study from. His mannerisms and jokes keep the 75 minute lectures moving along rather quickly.
Matt is the best professor I have ever had! He kept class interesting with fun examples. I came to every lecture. I never go to every lecture. Ever.
Great guy and great teacher!
Best teacher ever :-)
awesome teacher.
Always very helpful, even met with me for an hour and 45 minutes the day before the final to help me. Gave me notes from his book that I had missed. He really WANTS students to do well, fun professor.
overall good teacher
He is the man, Funny, but informative.. Best Math Class I've ever taken (I hate math)
He really wants everyone do well in his class. GOOD PROFESSOR!!
Good professor easy class Stats for business
This guy is the best professor at UI. Literally about changed my major from Biology to Math (stats) due to him. Final is easy if you know major concepts. You would never have to look at the clock during lecture, bc he keeps you interested the entire time!
By far the best professor i've had yet. He makes learning stats pretty easy and he keeps your attention during lecture. If you see a class with Bognar, TAKE IT!
Excellent Professor, I HATED math before I got him in business stats. Uses real life situations to help explain math and keeps lecture interesting
best teacher ever, k? k? all make sense? k?
Great teacher, funny but his lectures are kinda useless. But if you're lucky, he'll wear his Mr.Bubble's shirt!
He makes stats bearable.
Bognar is a G, excellent professor and incredibly reasonable about grades. He hopes for improvement and WILL reward you for it. I loved this class and I absolutely HATE math. Def take his courses
He really does care about how you do in your class. All he cares about is improvment. If you try and come in to see him, then he will take that into account. He's a hard grader and very nit picky, but just keep at it! He really makes you think, but OVERALL EXCELLENT PROFESSOR
whoops. I messed up in the earlier one. HELPFULNESS=5 + + +
Matt is an awesome teacher! He explains everything really well. There was nothing in the course that was confusing after he explains it in lecture. Homework isn't that much either. Great class!
Best prof. I've ever had. Makes lecture super interesting. "Mini Quizzes" aren't quizzes, they're just attendence for lecture pretty much, if you're there you'll get the points for them. They're given on Mondays because you have quizzes every Wednesday. Overall the class was super fun, because Bognar is a G.
Great teacher. gives many good examples, and examples are usually thge same as the test questions. Funny guy. The tests actually can be hard, especially the final, but you do get to use a note card for each test. Overall, good teacher.
He's a funny guy and he gives tips during quizzes.
I took prob&stats for engineers with Bognar. He was a nice guy and tried to make lecture interesting. He did a lot of good examples. We had about 2hrs of homework every week and a quiz every Friday. The tests were fairly difficult, but not horrible. Overall it was a good class, but not curved so tough to get a high grade.
Tough quizzes and tests, but you will be prepared for them if you attend class every day. Otherwise, a very interesting, engaging, and overall very fun professor
Matt Bognar was the most awesome prof, I've had yet so far. His tests/quizzes are hard but that doesn't mean he won't prepare you. He doesn't tolerate cheating and if you're caught, he'll make your life MISERABLE. As as you try hard and respect him, it will be a rewarding experience. Just do your best :) He uses :)'s too!
By far one of the best math professors in this university. While his class is hard, he does not make it impossible. He always is happy to help every student and it is obvious that he takes his job very seriously. A very good professor and I would recomment him to anyone!
Bognar is the man. He gives VERY helpful hints on the quizzes (basically gives you the formulas) and his tests were pretty straightforward. He lets you use a notecard (filled with anything you want) on all tests so it really wasn't too difficult. If you ever have a chance to have him as a teacher, take it. He is a great teacher and makes class fun!
He is my favorite professor..ever. His class isn't super easy, but he makes it more than easy to do well. He gives helpful hints and actually wants his students to do well if they put in the effort. I went to all lectures, (which is saying a lot) but you could afford to miss a couple. Great great great professor take him if you can!
He was my favorite teacher! Lecture is very helpful! He makes everything very clear. If you don't understand something, he will help you out! He gives you hints for quizzes if you need them! If you have to take prob and stats, definitely take it with Bognar!
Best professor ever! Always very helpful and clear when explaining things!!!
Bognar is probably one of my favorite professors I've had at the University! Statistics is not the most interesting of subjects, but he does a great job at teaching it and is really funny! He's always in such a great mood and you he's more than willing to help students out. If you have to take a Stats class, definitely try to take one with him!
My absolute favorite professor I've had so far! He is extremely helpful and wants you to do well in the class. He is the only teacher I have ever had that has managed to make math and lectures fun and interesting. If you need to take Stats but you suck at math I highly recommend taking it with Bognar
Bognar is an amazing teacher that you will love. He's not too hard if you do the work and gives answers often. He's also a great lecturer and will make you want to come to class. If you have the chance taken him because you won't forget him.
I love his smile face :)! I will never forget "Sexy Baby" He is sooooo nice, and he always kind! Don't worry to ask him a question! Also, we can meet him around campus!
Matt is seriously the best professor at UI. If you have to take stats take it with him!! Even if you dont like stats he will help you so much. Notecards can be used on all the tests...and 2 homeworks and quizzes are dropped...by far best teacher!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. hands down. super funny. super easy if you go to class (which you should cause he's too good to pass up). all around great guy, great class.
He's a wonderful professor, he always walks around before class to help students and is always at his office hours. If you don't like the way your TA graded something bring it to him and he'll change it. He's super funny and very approachable.
great prof. nice guy. a little bit hard on grading. too much quizs and homework.
Bognar's class, while not strictly mandatory (though quizzes are given every Wednesday), was definitely worth attending. He's charming and very well-versed in the subject material. Also, going to his office hours will definitely lead to favorable rounding (and he's fun to talk to!).
One of the best math professors I have had. Really cares for the students, and wants to improve everyones overall grades. He sends emails to the students who received A's and asks how they prepared for the exams so he can pass on the useful tips to other students who are struggling. Gives awesome notes, easy to go back to and study. Recommended.
Awesome professor, one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Lectures are very helpful and the "oh babbbies!" during class kept me interested.
Very funny, I hate stats but I loved this class. Also has very nice legs, and is incredibly nice and personable
Bognar is THE MAN. But, on a serious note, he explains the material well and somehow finds a way to make statistics - a normally incredibly boring class - pretty interesting and even fun at times. Excuse me if I am being redundant but I must reiterate that Bognar is, in fact, the man.
Bognar is a chill bro! But seriously he makes the material much easier to understand and he can be funny at times.
Bognar gave really great lectures and he explains things very well. the homework is very tedious, however, and there are a lot of steps where you could make a mistake. The cool thing is on the exams they let you use quarter sheets of paper with anything on them. So just put all the formulas on there and you'll be pretty good.
The most hilarious Professor I have ever had (without even trying). Incredibly passionate about statistics and is really knowledgable in his field. Moves through material quickly, but is a very effective teacher. Quiz every week and a lot of homework. Exams are difficult.
so easy class is u follow him up well and he is kinda cute haha
Probably one of the top 5 teachers of all time...seriously he is that good. And the dude loved to wear shorts. It would be snowing outside and he would still wear shorts.
Just like everyone else already said, Bognar is a nice guy. However his class is fairly difficult. I struggled with the class because the exams are very hard, nothing like the homework. Homework is almost pointless because the bulk of grade comes from quizzez. If you do poorly on quizzes, you do poor in the class. This class should be curved.
Bognar is one the greatest professors at the university. His tests are fairly difficult, but if you prepare you will do fine. He is very clear on his teaching and makes statistics an enjoyable time. Really appreciates the students and does everything he can do to help them. Highly recommend.
Stats for Biss with Matt was great. Im not the most intelligent student by any means (finished with a B), and this was the most well structured math class I've taken at any university, anywhere. Period. His notes are clear. Plenty of examples. And he really wants to help you learn. Super nice guy.
Bognar is amazing. One of the nicest guys at the university. Yes, his tests are tough but he really helps you out in lecture and encourages you to always do better. Easily my favorite professor at Iowa. Cannot recommend highly enough.
A really cute and nice professor.
Matt is an awesome professor. His lectures can get pretty long, but it's that way for every 1.25 hour math lecture. He's hilarious, the students love him, and he's clear on what you need to learn. His tests are very similar to the practice exams he posts online -- not too difficult at all. I definitely recommend taking this class with him!
Matt is a cool guy. The class is challenging if you don't go to lecture. He wants you to succeed and is more than willing to help if you go to office hours. He's awkward in front of class but that's what makes lecture interesting and fun. If you're majoring in business, I would recommend taking stats with Matt.
Matt is the best professor that I've had at Iowa so far. The workload and material is definitely manageable, and if you put in the work, you can easily get an A. His lectures are interesting and he's always making funny comments. You can really tell that he cares about his students and wants us all to do well!
Bognar is the best professor I've had at Iowa, he's not your typical professor... he shows up to class in basketball shorts and a t shirt. He actually makes his math lectures funny, and not mind numbingly boring. His tests and quizzes are very straight forward and if you put in the time it's an easy A. HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING ANY COURSE WITH HIM!!
This is the best professor ever!!! He is nice, funny, and cute :) Highly suggest to attend his lecture. You don't need to buy any textbooks. All you need his organized notes on icon. He is very helpful during his office hour. He will send a warm message to people who did well on the exam. You will be very very lucky to have his class!!!
Matt Bognar is exactly what you want for this class. The guy keeps a group of 300+ business kids interested in math, something we can all appreciate. Lectures move quickly, but if you keep up on your notes you'll be fine, he keeps them engaging and entertaining. Would take any other class this guy offers because he simply is that good. No textbook!
TAKE THIS CLASS. Stat 2020 is for engineering students so it involves Calc, and Matt will challenge you at times, but it is so worth it. I learned more in his class than I have in any other college courses. He is extremely nice and funny (he might be the happiest man on earth) and he truly cares about his students. Take his class. He's great!
I was a TA for Matt for 2 years in Bus Stats. My advice is to TAKE HIM! You can't truly experience your time here at Uiowa without hearing Bogs say something cheesy like talking about how sexy his normal dist looks. From our viewpoint, you won't learn stats from a better guy. We respected him & all my past students loved the guy. Take him
Matt Bognar's lectures are extremely enjoyable. He wants everyone in the class to excel and sets up his class for students to excel. If you do the homework and go to lecture/discussion, it is a very straight forward class and very understandable. My favorite professor so far, definitely take stats for business with Bognar if you get the chance.
Bognar is the man. Though lectures are 75 min long, they go by quick because of his fun personality. He's hilarious and quirky and really understands college kids. Homework gets more difficult as the semester goes on, but just pay attention in lecture and there's no way to fail. Sets you up to succeed. Wish I could take all my classes w/him!
great guy, funny lecture, quiz every Friday.
he is real cute! amazing class!!
Awesome all around guy
Bognar is a great teacher, if you need to take stats for any reason take it with him. He is not the easiest of graders but he makes tests pretty easy so mistakes are always obvious. His lectures are not mandatory, but they are very helpful and he makes them entertaining.
He genuinely cares about students' grades and wants you to succeed. He maintains a very casual class setting and makes lectures as enjoyable as possible considering the moderately dry info being covered. He uses lots of helpful examples to reinforce course concepts that make understanding material relatively easy. His exams are very passable.
I loved having Matt as my professor. He makes class interesting and stats actually enjoyable. I highly recommend him as a professor if he's an option. He really cares about his students and doesn't design exams/homework/quizzes to screw you over. I wish I could have him again.
Best Stats professor at the University
Best professor ever
He made stats as fun as stats could be, and spiced up examples from the regular flip a coin, roll a die problems. Tough grader though. If you do not write out all notation or do a problem right and write down a wrong step, you will get points taken off.
One of my favorite professors. He makes his lectures as interesting as possible and explains things very well (especially for a 600+ student lecture). He is super fair and understanding! I accidentally skipped a page on an exam and he didnt let that mistake affect my grade. AMAZING!
He is extremely intelligent and teaches class in an interesting way. He cares about his students so much that he wrote his own books and let us use it as the class material for free. He created online apps just to make the material easier for students to understand. He is really patient and gets so happy if you go to his office hours. Amazing prof!
Very cool guy that can relate to his students. You gotta do your work for this class each week and if you do, it helps a lot just like it would for any other class. If you do your homework, he'll help you out if you need it.
hard exams, Doesn't use icon very well.
Interesting guy
For sure the best professor I have ever had. He really cares about his students, and going to his office hours is really helpful. Take Stats with this professor!!
You can tell Matt is a very intelligent professor. He knows what he's talking about and always kept the class interesting. He is hilarious and his exams aren't too hard, as long as you do the practice exams. I also like how the lecture/discussions are set up. Overall, great professor!
One of the best professors I have ever had. Super funny, always helpful outside of class. Has his own textbook so you don't have to buy one. Has an app to check/get answers(very helpful) Teaches the material very well, I would defiantly recommend taking this class with this professor. If he teaches any other class I can take I am picking him.
WHO DOESN'T LOVE THIS PROFESSOR? Lecture: organized, funny, exciting, and challenging. He offers free books he wrote and the free stat app he made. If you want to understand statistics, he does a wonderful job. HW, quizzes, exams: tough but fair. Weekly HW and quizzes prepared me well for the exams and more advanced stat courses in the future.
Statistics at Iowa is just a bad class in general, but Bognar does a good job keeping lectures interesting and funny. He is much better than the Statistics teacher in the spring. I would wait to take it with him. Tests are hard but TA's are helpful tools to learn.
Bognar is the best professor I have ever had. He cares so much about his students and I would recommend anyone take a statistics course taught by him. Going to lecture is really beneficial for your learning, and he is fun to listen to so it isn't a pain. Utilize office hours if you have any questions, he gets so excited when people visit him!
He's a really great professor, he really cares about his students. The exams are really hard but you get what you put into the class.
Best professor I have had. Not only is he a great teacher, but he also makes lectures interesting by cracking jokes and even provides a free text book! I had Whitten my first time taking the course, had to buy books, got a D, & hated going to lecture. With Bognar, I enjoyed lectures and got a B. I wish all professors were like Bognar!
Matt Bognar is an EXCEPTIONAL professor. The course is structured in the best way I could possibly imagine. As long as you are able to stay engaged in the lectures (which really isn't difficult at all considering Matt's funny, friendly personality) then you will pass this class no problem.
Matt is just generally a good person and professor. He cares about his students' success. Go to lecture and attend office hours when you get stuck and it's an easy A! Such a funny and awesome guy!!
Matt really cares about and respects his students. Created an entire equivalent to a textbook for his class so that students wouldn't have to overpay for one from the university. Whenever you need help, he is happy to do so. Loves to crack jokes in class to make it as enjoyable as possible for everyone. 11/10
A great professor who cares about his students. Will put his foot down when the class isn't putting in as much effort as they should be. Lectures are informative and easy to understand, and his in-class examples are exactly like what you see on quizzes/exams.
Matt is emotional and his feelings towards the overall class will effect your grade heavily. He revoked a curve following an unexpected rant on attendance in a non mandatory section of the class. Expect a low grade. Would recommend avoiding STATS 2020 with this prof. Good Luck!
Matt is a good guy. His lectures are good and engaging and you can tell he loves what he teaches. Most of the time he is relaxed and funny. However, with a couple weeks left he revoked our curve due to poor discussion attendance AFTER the drop deadline passed. He is very hot & cold. Also his office hours are not particularly helpful.
Hes a good teacher and funny guy
If you are a student and you have a disability.... good luck. No exceptions made.
Bognar seemed liked he genuinely enjoyed lecturing, which is sometimes hard to find with undergrad professors. He made lecture worth coming to, which is pretty important for STAT 1030. Bognar also had the generosity to upload a PDF of the textbook to ICON so no one had to spend a single dollar. He also posted exams from previous classes.
Matt is a great guy. He's created various useful tools for his students to use for free, and you can tell he cares about his lectures. He makes a kind of dull class a bit more exciting.
Matt is a great teacher with a 10/10 personality. Lecture notes aren't online, so show up to class. Study exams/quizes from previous years posted on icon (not his website) and you'll do fine. While part of the class was online for COVID, he posted videos of his bird eating yogurt to boost moral. He also calls answers cute after solving problems.
Good professor, very clear teaching. Practice exams were very similar to exams.
Matt has been great! He truly cares about his students, writing his own textbook and then uploading it to ICON so no one had to pay. He posts practice exams on ICON that are excellent study materials. Even with COVID, his online lectures have been clear and easy to follow. The only downside is that his handwriting is hard to read.
Professor Bognar is awesome. One of my favorite professors at UI. He is engaging, funny, and wants every student to do their best. He also makes apps and websites which help with calculations. Every assignment is told in advance and is laid out well. I highly recommend going to office hours. He is great to talk to.
Matt has made me genuinely enjoy Stats. He is super charismatic and enjoyable to listen to. Put in the work and time, and you will do well. Studying previous quizzes and exams will also help.
Given the current state of the world right now, a pandemic, I had hoped Prof Bognar would be a little more emphatic towards his students. He refused to allow any flexibility towards hw deadlines or makeup quizzes and exams. He also seems to really enjoy catching kids for cheating, its almost an obsession. Do not take this class with this professor
Matt is kind of a polarizing prof I think, people either loved him or hated him. He was definitely very serious about making sure nobody cheated, but otherwise, the class was fair and nothing was a curveball. Don't skip lectures and stay on top of it and it should be fine, he was accessible outside of class and responded to emails fast.
Asked for feedback in his class and didn't take any of it. Instead, he talked down on people who did give feedback by trying to defend how he teaches instead of helping those who asked. Lectures were boring as there was nothing to make them fun or interesting, but you have to attend otherwise you could miss a whole chapter.
Final exam score median was a 48, there was no curve given, and for students to progress in the business college a B was needed in the class. There was also no curve in the class even though its a college standard for the business classes. Perhaps you're doing something wrong and not your students if the average is that low, "StatGod".
Way too hard for intro level stats. Exam scores average Ds and the final exam mean grade was an F. Lectures are long and extremely boring, as well as the homework. Exams are significantly harder than the quizzes, which are reasonably challenging.
Hard class but not impossible. Stay on top of your homework and attendance to both lecture and discussion as they count for 10 percent of your grade. He releases old exams so you can practice them and have a pretty good idea of how hard you exam will be.
Professor Bognar is definitely lecture heavy, but if you attend all of the lectures and keep up with the homework assignments its a pretty mangeable class. Going to lecture is almost necessary if you wanna pass with a good grade. Past tests & quizzes from prior years are all posted and are very similar to the ones he gives in class.
Professor Bognar is great. All material is covered in lecture so no textbook reading just notes. The main complaint I would hear from others is that Professor Bognar "Never taught us that" despite going through multiple examples of the same problem and giving you a step by step completion of the problem. Pay attention and you will do well.
Bognar is one of the best professors you will meet here. This guy is really FUNNY to talk to. Make sure to go to lectures and pay attention. He is also very willing to help students, so ASK QUESTIONS!!!
104 out of 203 students failed the midterm (UNCURVED). Nobody had enough time to finish. Matt spent half a class explaining how the test was totally fair and the students were unprepared. He is otherwise a great professor, it perplexes me why he wrote such a bad test and then doubled down on it.
Lectures are helpful because he does lots of examples and assignments aren't too long. Exams are hard, you don't get enough time (so good luck if you have test anxiety), and half the class failed the first exam but he blamed us. He doesn't post notes or lectures online so it's easy to get lost if you miss a class.
This guy is great, funny and easy. Doesn't take himself too seriously, or demand to be called dr or anything. Jokes around during lecture which keeps it entertaining, also no bs kind of guy so does not care to speak his mind about the morons running this university.
These other reviews are very misleading by saying he's funny and a fun lecturer. He might be a nice guy but his class is very difficult for an introduction level statistics class. He does NOT curve ANYTHING. The exam averages are low C's and high D's. He doesn't care if the class average is failing. I would not recommend taking stats with him.
This professor spent half of the class period on Apr 15 shaming the class for poor exam performance (F and D for exams 1 & 2). Very unprofessional and can't recognize own faults. Exam difficulty far exceeds quiz difficulty. At this rate, half the class may fail the course. Avoid at all costs.
Matt is a great dude, with a great personality. Doesn't take himself too seriously and wants to see us do well. You're now wondering, why avoid this class? Well, as great a guy as Matt is, no college-level math class this difficult should be multiple-choice without partial credit. Our exam scores are a joke, and uncurved. Big L for a good profesor.
Best prof I've had, made me want to switch my major to stats
Matt is a great prof who is really passionate about teaching kids math. All of the material is only available in-person, so missing class is tough, but if you make friends you'll be okay. You also have weekly HW & quizzes and cheat sheets on the exams. The exams are multiple choice, which means no partial credit like the HW and quizzes (it got me).
He is a humble guy, but really strict on grading
Professor Bognar is a great teacher that I think gets a bad rep sometimes. However, this is not because of something he does. There were many times when I was taking this course where the lectures would be empty. It was surprising to me. If you go to class, discussion, and do the homework you'll be fine, but if not you're grade will reflect it.
Created his own statistics book and provides it for free. His lectures are funny and clear and concise. If you take notes and come to class you should be able to pass all the quiz and tests with ease. Homework can be long but he tries very hard to allow you to learn and understand the concepts.
The first thing i'll say is going to class is very important he doesn't post any notes online but I think that that's really the only downside. He's a great teacher and overall very funny. If you are someone who doesn't go to 90% or more of your classes I might try to find someone else but he's a great teacher and I fully reccomend him to everyone.
Matt is a great professor who really cares about his students. Lecture is necessary if you want a good grade. There are weekly quizzes, but they are fairly straightforward and graded easily. Tests are multiple choice and are somewhat difficult but you get note sheets and he posts the previous semesters tests and quizzes for you to practice with.
An amazing professor! To succeed in this class, you will have to practice the problems. If you're worried about your homework, you can go to his office hours and check your answer. About 60% of your grade depends on your exams, so if you mess up one like me, it's super hard to get an A in the class even if you got As in the other categories.
He is literally the best professor I have ever had at UIowa. His lectures and homework were so helpful and his tests were incredibly reasonable. He also seemed like he genuinely cared about his students and reached out to students to congratulate them on doing well after exams. If you can take a course with Matt Bognar, take it.
Bognar is one of the best professors I've ever had - genuinely made stats not boring somehow? idk how he did it, but lectures were always interesting. And he genuinely cares about students too - when I did well on an exam he sent me an email congratulating me and saying how happy he was for me! If you can, you should definitely take his class.
he was terrible, set everyone up for failure
If you struggle with math or have to take this for business I would not recommend or I would change majors. He said he does not care if he fails half the class and there is basically no help, unless you can afford a really expensive tutor. He just doesn't care about his students at all or if he ruins their academic lives. Really disappointing.
Matt is truly the best professor I have ever had. This class is a difficult course and if you want to do well you need to put in the extra time but he explains things very well and will always help you when needed. He is also the only professor I've had who shows he truly cares for his students and he never lets hard work go unnoticed.
Matt is one of the best professors I have ever had. His course requires effort and time in order to do well. He is so easy to talk to and genuinely makes you want to attend class. He wants to see his students succeed and will help you in any way you need. I definitely recommend taking a class with him!
Bognar has been my favorite professor so far at UIowa. I see many people who complain that his class is too difficult. While it's not easy, show up to lectures and if you need to, utilize help from SI or office hours. Bognar makes stats really interesting and almost fun when you understand it. Great guy and great course
Matt Bognar is one of my all-time favorite professors. Funny, caring, and made learning stats enjoyable. Do the homework and spend time understanding the formulas to prepare for the exams.
How Matt has a literally perfect rating is beyond me. He may be nice to first-time stat students, but to anyone who has taken AP or IB stat before this guy is a nightmare. He uses notation that must be formatted his way or you receive no points, and he prides himself on people failing his class, and tries to mess up people who can use calculators.
Matt Bognar was a nice man, but half of the kids did not go to lecture. His handwriting is terrible so it's impossible to read his work and hard to take notes. There was also a lot of homework and if you didn't show work his way, you were losing a lot of points.
Matt Bognar makes learning stats fun and entertaining. Bognar gets a lot of hate for the simple fact that he doesn't just hand out easy A's. He truly cares about his students and about making sure students understand the material beyond just memorizing formulas. As long as you show up to lecture, go to discussion, and not cheat you should be fine!
Matt da goat. R.I.P Hank :(
Professor Bognar was just awful. A lot of kids on here will say others are lazy, and that's why they did poor in the class. The truth is, if you don't devote almost all of your time during your semester to this class you will do poorly. He refuses to tippie curve as a class that should. I am in 18 credit hours and have never gotten a C before now.
Matt is my favorite professor I've had so far. He's very encouraging and makes learning fun. There are weekly quizzes but they are exactly like the homework. He is very good at making sure we are prepared to be tested and lets us know when we are doing a good job. Math is not my favorite subject but I would take any course this man teaches.
Matt is very enthusiastic about teaching stats and takes the time to talk to his students before and after his lecture too, which shows how much he cares. As long as you do the homework and go to lecture you'll be fine on the quizzes and exams, but our exams were during lecture so be prepared to be fast. Footnote, he likes to call everything cute.
very inconsiderate. He didn't allow me to reschedule his final exam for a different date because I had two other exams the same day and as a result, I got a terrible grade on the final that brought my grade down like three percent. He's "nice" but then screws you over in sneaky ways like putting some out of pocket stuff on exams
Matt was one of my favorite professors so far at UI. It is clear how much he cares about his students. Super fun, low time commitment class!
Bognar was amazing and the best prof. I could've had for STAT:3510. Great teaching style, writes the notes along with you while explaining them but does not post them (get a friend to send you them if you can't make it). Many opportunities to earn points and you can tell that he really cares about you! So many good things to say about Bognar!
Awesome professor, doesn't lecture too quickly or too slow. Explains concepts thoroughly, and easier to understand than the textbook. He doesn't post notes online, so attendance is crucial, but he makes an 8:30 class super bearable.
Great professor. Not a math girly but he made this class bearable. Is very understandable unlike some other stats teachers here. Doesn't post notes or lectures online though so make sure you show up for class. Other than that pretty easy class.
Great professor who makes stats engaging. Leverages resources like homework and unstuckstudy to prepare us. Exams are during lecture, so being attentive pays off. Overall, a rewarding class with a caring instructor.
Best professor I've had so far, I feel like I am actually learning stuff. Funny guy, lecture is easy to follow and move at a good pace. Weekly quiz and HW. Tests are multiple choice and very fair. If you have to take any stat class I would strongly recommend him. Don't cheat because he will punish you and remember your calculator.
The most caring professor I've had. I was gone 2 weeks for surgery, and when I came back Matt went out of his way to find me during every lecture and ask how I was. The class is difficult, but my grades have always been a function of my engagement with the coursework. Definitely go to his office hours, he will be incredibly patient and thorough.
Bognar makes the two prior semesters' past quiz and exam keys available from day 1 and current ones uploaded same-day. The material is paced well and roughly follows MIT's Intro to Probability and Stats weeks 1-6 and 9-11. One hw+quiz Fridays, no attendance req, no surprises. Best of all, he is patient, clear and well-spoken, and accessible. Gold.
Bognar is a tough grade yes. The course is hard yes. BUT he is the best teacher I have ever had. He gives you the past 2 semesters quizzes and exams at the start. He has coded and created several calculators that he gives to you FOR FREE that help out a lot. He works with his TAs to give you great feed back. Bognar is the pinnacle of education.
Really cares about his students doing well in his class
Best professor in the math department. Lectures always made sense and exams and quizzes were reflective of the hw. He gives you so many resources to succeed. Exams are a little tricky so study hard.
He was not accommodating at all. Quizzes every Friday with only 2 quizzes dropped at the end of the semester. Didn't matter if you had a family emergency or a University-affiliated event (absences for University athletics), he didn't allow any makeups. So many people failed the class he had to bump everyone up a full letter grade.
Bognar is a very good lecturer, he does a lot of example problems that are similar to exam questions. He does not post notes or any slides on canvas, but he does make prior year quizzes and exams available. Quiz every friday, only one is dropped which is annoying but they are not that bad. The material is hard but it is not impossible.
DONT TAKE MATT DONT LISTEN TO THE REVIEWS WHO SAY HES GOOD HE PAYS STUDENTS TO WRITE THEM
terrible. would not recommend him or his class to anyone.
Homework + quiz every single week regardless of exams. Assigned homework during dead week. Usually its fine, but can really suck when multiple exams line up while still having homework due. Funny guy during lecture but a rough class if stats isn't your life's calling. Textbook is free, and a very good resource if you skip lecture a lot like I did.
Great teacher, not a big stats fan but I got by. His homeworks and especially TA examples in discussion were good for understanding content.
Matt is a great guy and going to his office hours will be very beneficial. Quizzes are very similar to previous quizzes that he posts with the answers. He provides several good resources to help students succeed. The class is not easy by any means and you will have to put in effort, but he makes it very doable if you try and show up to lecture.
Bognar is one of the best professors I've had so far! I enjoyed his lectures, and his examples/notes always aligned with the homework and quizzes for the week. He doesn't post his notes online, so make sure to attend lecture. This is a challenging course, but Matt sets you up for success and even provides last year's exams/quiz keys.
Matt is the best professor I've ever had. I was traumatized from stats in high school, but after taking his class it's now one of my favorite subjects. The way he lectures is very helpful, the homework is also great practice. There are weekly quizzes, but they are small and help you stay on track.
Makes statistics easier to understand–he is great during lectures. No recordings or notes uploaded, so make sure to attend class regularly. Weekly homework of around 4 pages is given, and weekly quizzes (except before exam weeks) are based heavily on homework content. Exams are manageable and cheat sheets are allowed (look at past exams!!)
Professor Bognar was one of my favorite professors at the University of Iowa. His class is engaging, and he actually works through problems in class rather than just reading off of a slideshow! Attendance isn't mandatory but there are weekly quizzes, and content doesn't get posted online. Great professor!
Per usual, another professor who pretends to be a cool guy but deep down is a clown. Spent more bashing the university, scratching the back of his head, showing off his pointless and outdated applets, than actual useful course material. Convinced he would write his exams blitzed because they were 9 times out of 10 a trick question
AMAZING Professor, so sad he is retiring. If you show up to class and put in the work, you can obtain A+ . Students that didn't go to class or didn't put in the work did poorly. very caring! amazing teaching methods
