Haha, what a nerd. Great guy, loves students.
Picture the ultimate chemistry lover and that is Matt. He is yes, very nerdy, but because he loves chemistry so much, he's very helpful and approachable.
I enjoyed Matt. He teaches the class well and more importantly, tells you exactly what you need to know for the exams, which aren't too hard. I wish I had him again this semester.
I loved his class. He makes sense when he explains chemistry to you. I am in 345 now, and I still ask him questions. I am rocking 345, and I think it is all thanks to how well I learned 343 with Matt.
Matt is great. He's extremely helpful, and really wants you to do well. He's a funny guy and there were never really any surprises on exams.
There's no need to be scared of ochem when Matt's your professor. Such a nice guy who obviously cares about how his students do. His examples in lecture are clear and he takes time to explain and review concepts that people have trouble with. Tests are still tricky because it is ochem after all, but nothing too terrible.
Matt is one of the best professors on this campus. He actually makes O-Chem interesting and approachable, and if you don't understand something he is literally around 20 hours a week. His exams are very, very fair and similar to the problem sets he offers so you won't ever be surprised. I only wish every class were taught by Matt.
I couldn't have asked for a better O. Chem professor. Matt really tries make the material understandable and is always availabe for help. He writes 3 practice exams for each exam, which are identicle to the layout of the actual exams. He's also really funny.
Dr. Bowman is one of the best Professors on campus. He is very approachable and knowledgable about chemistry. More importantly, he WANTS students to excel and be successful. I learned more chemistry from him than any other professor. I HIGHLY recommend him as a professor.
Had Matt for the summer session. You can tell that he LOVES ochem and honestly LOVES teaching it. Practice exams are the same format as real exams. Textbook is useless - Matt explains everything much better. I know a lot of people are afraid of ochem, but Matt makes it approachable and fun. Take this class with him!!!
Matt is an exceptional professor. He explains everything clearly and in a way that you can understand. Besides that, he's an extremely nice guy, and wants you to do well. I was worried about ochem before this class...I left it confident. Thanks Matt
Matt was a good lecturer for the most part. The subject material is difficult, so expect to need to put work in. Matt wrote good practice exams and problem sets. My one complaint would be that the grade was solely exam based and I felt not enough time was given. It's ochem, so you know what you're getting into
Great Professor! Very clear and tests are difficult but fair.
Matt is AWESOME! Let's face it, there are very few people who find O Chem fun and easy, so don't expect to waltz into this class and put zero effort in and get an A. Anyways, back to Matt. He is a wonderful professor, one of the best I've had at Madison. And I think he is pretty darn cute, too.
Matt is an incredible professor. I was scared to take ochem but I ended up loving it. He is so helpful and goes out of his way to make sure you understand the material. He also keeps lectures funny and interesting. All around he is a great guy. You have to put a lot of work in, but it is worth it. I definitely recommend him.
very helpful instructor. you can definitely tell how much he loves ochem and teaching it. his passion drives his students to work hard. though I would not recommend him if you're not a big fan of doing problem sets.
Matt is an excellent lecturer. He goes above and beyond what is required of him. Really an exceptional guy, quite knowledgeable in his field and inspirational for those with a deeper interest in the subject. Dropped some epic one liners about recreational use of substances in lecture, too!
Matt is a phenomenal professor. Not only does he really love teaching, but he also genuinely cares about how well his students do! Tests are challenging, but if you study and really know your stuff you'll be just fine. Problem sets are very helpful and emulate exam questions. Don't fall behind! Easily one of the best professors on campus!
Matt is hands down one of the best professors I've had. He's a REALLY nice guy, helpful, enthusiastic, puts in a lot of time to help students... Pretty much anything good, Matt is. On the last day of classes, the students applauded loudly and for a long time - Matt deserved it.
Matt is the most amazing professor ever. He is so excited about ochem and loves to teach it. He cares so much about his students, and is very approachable if you have questions. He makes you think when you ask them because he really cares that we learn. This class was the highlight of my freshman year. Matt is a hilarious, caring guy. He's a stud.
A very effective teacher. His humor, vast knowledge, and attention to students makes a difficult organic chemistry class worth taking.
The fact that he got a STANDING OVATION after our last lecture should speak volumes. Best teacher at UW by far.
Matt was a great lecturer and is obviously very passionate about chemistry. His lectures were engaging, funny, and clear, and the exams were fair. He gives tons of practice exams and problems so it's easy to be well-prepared if you utilize what's offered. Overall the best chemistry professor I've had and one of my favorite classes this year.
Matt is the best professor I had at UW. He is very excited about the subject, and his main goal is to really help us understand not just complete his course. In class, I've heard many times that students really loved the professor and the best proof was the last lecture when everybody stood up and applauded. The best teacher ever!
Matt is very enthusiastic about chemistry and extremely intelligent. Is class is really difficult and I am pretty sure I would hate it if he were not such a good lecturer
Matt is the best professor. He is a great lecturer and he wants all of his students to succeed. He is willing to help. He makes the lectures funny and interesting. Also he provides a lot of practice exams, so you know what is expected of you for the exam. This class was one of my highlights. He got a standing ovation in the last lecture.
I love Matt Bowman. The last page of the final was "Thanks for being such a good class -Matt". How do you not love this guy?
You don't have people raving about ochem - unless of course the professor is Matt. He puts a TON of time and effort into making his class succeed, but you still have to put in effort to do well. He's also really funny and extremely approachable. I can only pray that he teaches 345.
Matt is, by far, one of the best professors here on Madison. He goes out of his way to help his students, making a ridiculously great number of practice exams. His lectures are hilarious and informative, and he connects with his students well. It's a shame he isn't teaching 345 next semester!
I was terrified about taking o-chem before this semester, but Matt made learning it pretty easy. He gives lots of practice problems and plenty of practice exams so you know exactly what type of problems will be asked of you. It is still an incredibly difficult course, but it is CRAZY curved at the end of the semester.
Best teacher I have ever had. Really wants students to succeed and provides many practice problems and tests. Most lectures are posted online with additional material to help students. Organic is a difficult class, but I would take this class again if I could!
Matt Bowman was a fantastic teacher. He is genuinely interested in his student's success. Lots of practice is given. The exams are incredibly fair and could have definitely been harder. He is also a wonderful person and very approachable. I can't imagine what my opinion of Ochem would be had I not taken it with Matt.
Matt was hands down the best professor I have ever had! His lectures were fairly easy to follow and the material on exams matched that of the lectures. They aren't really mandatory but I HIGHLY recommend you attend since he moves quickly. I never used the textbook, but I hear you need it for 345, so buy it if you plan on taking that.
Best Professor I've ever had. If you are taking O chem at the UW make sure you get Matt Bowman. His practice tests are EXTREMELY helpful and he is willing to answer any questions. Wonderful teacher and very approachable.
The best teacher/ professor I have ever had the pleasure of having. Matt is such an awesome person. He manages to make the lectures funny and informative. His exams are completely fair, being based only on lecture. He and his trusty Dr. Pepper made O Chem my favorite class this past semester.
Matt is the best teacher I've ever had. I had him for 343 too and it was incredible luck to have him for 345 as well. He is one of the nicest and most caring people I've ever met. He will answer any questions, and gives good advice about future classes. His practice exams are exactly like the real exams. Greatest professor ever. I love Matt Bowman.
Matt is one of the best professors I've had on campus. He is obviously very passionate about teaching, with well organized, concise lectures, problem sets for every class, multiple practice exams, and detailed mechanism notes provided as handouts online. He provides all the tools needed to succeed in the class. Highly, highly recommended!
Best professor I have had by far. Gives a ton of resources and is very approachable. If you go to lecture, pay attention, and do all the practice exams, you will do well in this class.
He gives lots of practice exams which is nice but sometimes leaves out important details in lecture and some lecture materials can be difficult to understand. jumps around a lot in lecture. Overall great class and not too difficult!
The class is tough, but he is equipped to help you through it.
Matt Bowman is the best professor I've had at UW so far. Matt is helpful, organized, friendly, and an all around excellent prof. He gives you an insane amount of resources including 5-6 practice exams which all closely resemble the actual exams. Go to the review sessions he holds before tests. Highly recommend Matt to everyone taking ochem.
He is hands down the best professor I've had. Matt is extremely helpful and somehow manages to break down confusing topics into fairly easy subunits. His lectures are very clear and he finds simple patterns to help you through complicated mechanisms. He provides ample practice before the exams. Don't buy the book. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Best Pro. that I can ever have in UW-Madison. Dr. Bowman is good at simplifying complicated material. His passion to teaching and chemistry influences students a lot. Definitely take his class if you are unsure about whether you can do well in 343/345. This Professor can magically make you to enjoy o.chem.
BEST. PROFESSOR. EVER. This course is tough, but Bowman is a great lecturer
Bowman is the best professor I have ever had. He is so passionate about his work and is helpful and understanding. If you attend his office hours he is extremely kind. His exams are fair and are identical to his practice exams. Over all he made organic chemistry an awesome class! Hopefully I can have him again in the future!
He did not help me at all. He was very rude to me for no apparent reason. Although he does teach the topics very well. He gave exams every two weeks.
Great professor wouldn't take take this class with anyone else.
The best professor i have had, hands down!! Very clear on what he is trying to say. He is a funny guy who cares about students more than himself.
Best professor at UW. He honestly cares about how his students do and makes organic chemistry as interesting as it's going to get! Wouldn't recommend anybody else if you had to take 343.
Matt is an excellent professor! OChem is really difficult, but he will help you get through it. Be ready to work hard, but with Matt, you will get there.
Matt is one of the best professors I have had on this campus. He supplies you with more than you need to earn an A in the class. He would be my top recommendation for any O-chem course, undoubtedly.
Hard class, but probably the best professor I've had at UW
Matt Bowman is probably the most humble, down-to-earth professor I've ever had. He is super easy to talk to. Very readily available and extremely helpful. His great sense of humor kept most all of his students coming regularly to lecture. He did a ton of cool demos too! I would most definitely take another one of his classes again.
Matt was a good instructor with a pretty interesting class, but his curve at the end of the class was wretched. Told a bunch of jokes, had great review sessions, problem sets, practice exams, etc. Biggest problem was that the textbook didn't match up with the class, so you had to learn from him and had nowhere else to go.
A lot of practice exams and help
Matt is the best professor I've had at Madison! So many resources to help you do well in the class. Organic chem is tough, there is no way around that, but Matt will help you get through and even make you have a little fun along the way. If you have to take ochem try your best to get him, really cares about his students and is very approachable
If you have to take Organic, do your best to get Bowman. You cannot go wrong. Tests are extremely fair, and he explains things on a level that is very understandable from an undergraduate's point of view. also he is an epic human and hilarious.
Matt is an incredible organic chem. lecturer and an equally compelling person. The man's words will allow you to understand, and he is not above anybody. His combination of understanding students' needs and leaving a trail of breadcrumbs to get them there makes him somebody you want to get to know. Oh, and his exams are VERY fair.
I've never had a professor who genuinely cared about my success as much as Matt. He goes out of his way to help his students and he's very approachable. He makes organic chemistry as interesting and understandable as it possibly can be and if you have to take ochem you should do everything you can to take it with Matt. It's worth it, trust me.
Matt is one of my favorite professors. He truly cares about his students, and has a good sense of humor. He explains everything clearly and provides problem sets so the book is completely unnecessary. Do all the problem sets and practice exams, go to some office hours, and you can do well in the class.
Matt is the best professor I've ever had at UW. He provides you with all the resources you need and is genuinely concerned with how well his students are doing. As long as you keep up with problem sets, ask questions, and do the practice exams you will be just fine. He's also hilarious and makes lecture interesting.
Matt Bowman is the best professor I've ever had at Madison, hands down. He offers countless problem sets, clear lecture notes, and practice exams that guide you through the process of learning the material, leaving you very well prepared for exams. Beyond that, I've never had such a funny and interesting prof, let alone in a boring science class.
Awesome professor. He puts in a huge amount of time to help you understand, puts a lot of very helpful resources online, and is generally just a nice professor. He makes long and difficult classes easy to tolerate. Wish I could have him again.
Matt is an amazing professor; very personable, with a great sense of humor and enthusiasm which keeps lectures light despite the heavy and often arduous course content. He also has a keen sense of the student's level of knowledge, and never goes over their heads. There is no excuse to fail his classes with all of the resources he provides you.
Best professor I've had so far: understandable and friendly. He is willing and able to help you learn. I wish I could have him again.
He is the best professor I have had on campus so far. He is clear with what you need to know, and is always available to help you if needed. His problem sets are wonderful, and his practice exams are clear representation of the real exams. If you want to enjoy organic chemistry (I started to love it) take Bowman. You won't regret it
BEST TEACHER AT UW. Go to class, memorize the reactions he gives you and do all the practice exams, and he is the best. Change your entire schedule to take him!
Bowman was not only the best chem prof i had but the best professor I had in my first 2 years period. He is clear on what material he will test you on, does not require any text book readings and has an enormous amount of learn@uw materials to help you succeeded. O chem is hard, but if you need it, TAKE IT WITH BOWMAN! Good luck :)
He is a fantastic professor. His lectures are clear, interesting and informative. He also provides numerous problem sets as well as practice exams that allow you to properly prepare for all the tests.
Matt is an awesome professor; if you have to take O Chem, I recommend him immensely! Nicest professor, and offers lots of help sessions outside of class to make sure students understand the difficult material. In addition, his lectures are straightforward and he doesn't rush through material. Great professor.
Phenomenal professor. Took him for the 2nd semester of O-Chem. His passion and way of relating to students actually makes the organic chemistry bearable and (dare I say) interesting.
Easily the best professor I've ever had, he gives you everything you need to do well in this class and is always willing to help you, the only things you need to study for the class are his practice exams and mechanisms, he makes a difficult subject manageabe as long as you put some work in, ABSOLUTELY TAKE OCHEM WITH MATT, BEST DECISION U CAN MAKE
By far the best teacher I have ever had and at UW. He is amazing, so passionate and gives an unreal amount of practice problems. Change your entire schedule to take him for 343 and 345. He's hilarious too. My best advice is know the reaction sheet like the back of your hand and do all the practice exams (they are just like the actual exams).
Matt is the best. Amazing lecturer who commits a ton of time outside of lecture to making sure students succeed. Never had a professor who cared so much while at the same time maintaining a fun and effective learning environment. He gives you all the tools to succeed (problem sets, office hours, etc.) so if you do poorly, you can't blame him.
Excellent professor. Keeps the material interesting and wants all students to succeed. Posts videos online going through most of the reactions. Take this class with Matt if you can
I had Matt for 343 and 345. He gives you tons of problem sets and practice exams then supplements learning with video lectures. You'll actually be excited for lecture because Matt is hysterical. Very fair prof and just a super guy. If you have the option, take organic chemistry with THIS GUY.
Really helpful, go to class and do the problem sets
His class is easy meaning that everything is memorized and exams are very similar to the problem sets and straight forward. But he isn't very detailed when teaching mechanisms (things just appear) and doesn't teach 13C-NMR and mass spec which is needed in Chem 344 (although it is re-taught) while other professors teach them.
Struggled in ochem but Bowman, I was able to get an A+ on the final despite avg B. He is great at explaining mechan. and patterns so that you won't just memorize. Main thing is that many reactions are similar. Just have to see the patterns and small diff. with each. Also, go to lect, do the prob sets, but a MUST is pract. exams-same as actual exam
I can't say enough good things about Matt. He was beyond helpful in office hours, clear about what he wanted you to know on exams, and has a fantastic personality. Let's face it -- organic chemistry is not easy. Matt does an excellent job of explaining things and making it clear about what he wants you to know for exams. Awesome professor!
Best Professor at UW. TAKE HIM for orgo
Best prof for orgo. Exam averages were between 70 and 80. Do the problem sets and go to class. For the tests, just take his practice exams several times before the real thing and you'll be fine. Very helpful in office hours.
Bowman is a super nice man. His office hours are very helpful;I suggest going. One drawback is that his lectures are sometimes are hard to follow, and it is difficult to use a book in his class. If you rely on reading/text, don't take him. Also, the averages are super high, which seems nice, but you need an 88+ to get an A. Overall, great guy.
Matt is the best professor I have ever had. He is so nice, helpful, and is an overall great teacher.
Matt is one of the best ochem professors out there! Take him if you have the chance! If you go to all his lectures, watch his video lectures for review, and do all of the practice exams, you will get an A in the class. Don't bother buying the textbooks. He is purely lecture based.
As far as chemistry instructors go at UW, Matt is by far the best I've had. Chemistry had been a difficult subject for me and Matt has taught it in a way that makes it more comprehensible.
One of the best professors I've had at UW. Cares about the success of his students, very helpful in office hours, makes jokes to lessen the stress. Would take all my chemistry classes with him if I could.
By far my favorite professor at UW-Madison. I was intimidated by o-chem at first but Matt definitely helped ease the stress. If you're worried about o-chem I highly recommend taking his class. The lab section was fairly easy and even though Matt wasn't there most of the time he still stayed involved and was always available during office hours.
Matt sets you up for success. The only grades in the class are participation points (up to 30), four midterms (100 points each) and a final (200 points). No quizzes, and no mandatory homework. He gives a problem set for each lecture, do these and you will succeed. Also give you about 5 practice exams for each exam which will be exactly like yours.
343 can be very confusing, but with Bowman he really helps make things clear for you. Class is worth 630 points, 600 are from exams. Use the practice exams he gives you and you will do fine. Also submit your exams for a regrade, ended up getting points back. I got a bad TA, luckily you do not need to go to discussions to do well in this class.
Matt is the only professor I will take for o chem. He does as much as he can to help you succeed in the class. His office hours are unbelievably helpful and he has them all the time. He gives problem sets after each lecture and 5 practice exams for every exam that are exactly like the exam. He is my favorite professor here at UW. TAKE HIM
Great professor, he's really energetic in class but the tests are hard because everyone learns so much.
Matt cares about his students and sets you up for doing well in his class. The biggest complaint from my end is that his curve can be set high because everyone does well; our average on exams was usually well above 70, which is high for an second-semester o-chem class. Most definitely take him if you have the chance, you won't regret it.
He's such a cool dude. Organic chemistry is a tough subject, but Matt will help you with any and all questions you have. He's relate-able and interesting to listen to in class. I highly recommend taking a class with him if you need to take organic chemistry!
Best teacher at UW thus far. He is quirky and quite hilarious. He makes expectations clear. Many practice exams given. Had office hours this semester on average about 4 hrs a day, 5 days a week (last semester he had less but still had a respectable amt). He also comes in on weekends before exams to answer questions. Most dedicated teacher I know
Bowman is awesome - genuinely have nothing negative to say about him. He takes a difficult subject like O-Chem and breaks it down into digestable chunks for students. He really takes an interest in students and hopes they do well. Answers questions well, makes lecture interesting - heck he's so good you don't need to buy the book!
Class is only worth 3 credits but I put 6 credits worth of work into it to get an A. Bowman is an amazing professor though. Funny and willing to meet any time outside of class to help you out. I suggest that you hire an undergrad tutor to help reinforce his ideas. I got one that was only 10$ an hour that was fantastic. Exams are really tough though
Bowman is a really caring professor. I had to miss two tests last minute due to medical issues and he was great about letting me make them up. He holds tons of office hours. However, the class material is kind of tough. He's definitely the best professor teaching O Chem at UW.
Bowman is hands down the best professor I've had. He genuinely cares that his students do well and makes ochem manageable and understandable. He holds office hours nearly every day and provides students with an extensive amount of practice material, including 4-5 practice exams that mirror the format of the actual exam. Bowman for ochem is a must!
Fantastic lecturer and everyone understood the subject, which was my main problem with the course. Everyone understood the topics so well, the exam averages were incredible high compared to normal ochem exam averages so there was basically no curve. He teaches so well that if you have to score above a 90 on every exam to get an A.
The guy you MUST take for o chem. Super helpful by providing every material you need to pass the class. Doing the problem sets giving to practice your understanding, the looks-exactly-like-the-exam practice exams, video lectures, etc. - he gives you adequate material, you just have to use them! He's funny so lectures are fun to go to.
I also had Matt for 343, he is by far my favorite teacher at UW! He is a great at teaching, I stress teaching, b/c I can't stand prof that just point at ppt slides. He gives tons of practice exams, which are very close to his actual exams. I did not attend very many dis sessions and still did well. Do the pkts he gives you and you'll do great!!
Even if you have to rearrange your entire schedule to take 343/5 with Matt, it's definitely worth it. I've never seen an instructor so dedicated. His lectures are crystal clear, and he provides so many resources (problem sets, lecture notes/videos, 10 hours office hours/wk, 5 practice exams). Organic chemistry is NOT easy- ATTEND HIS OFFICE HOURS!
If you take OChem, take it with Matt. He provides problem sets, practice exams that are exactly like the real exams, extra practice, and online notes and video lectures. You will have to work hard, but if you do the problem sets and practice exams, you will do fine. Lectures aren't mandatory but completely worth going to. No textbook required.
Excellent professor and grader. My TA wasn't super helpful, but I still understood the material because Matt was so approachable. He doesn't give homework, but he gives a lot of optional homework-like material to help prepare for the exams that I recommend doing. He wants his students to pass, and it shows.
ALWAYS go to his office hours! Why take Bowman if not for his teaching skills. Cool and awesome guy, as is his taste in books. Slightly tough class though, try not to screw up any tests, like I did for my first :(
Best O Chem prof out there. There's no way to make the material easier, only more manageable. Matt does this with very clear examples, multiple practice exams with video answer keys, outside videos and power points, and a lot of office hours. Make sure you know your stuff for pop quizzes in discussion.
Matt is a very good, clear lecturer. He is also a very nice and helpful man as well, and he is one of the best teachers I have had here at UW (third-best chemistry professor I have had, top five overall). His lectures are clear, and he has a sense of humor. His problem sets are very good. I would definitely take him again. I'm a chem major.
He has so many resources online its insane. online videos, multiple practice tests, step by step mechanisms written out, and more just to make sure you understand everything. The best professor I've ever had.
Ocher is hard, but Matt definitely makes it interesting! He is very clear and teaches the material in an easy to follow manner. His exams can be hard but do all the practice exams he posts and you'll know exactly what to expect. Highly recommend him. He makes ochem really cool while teaching you a ton.
Best Teacher I've ever, made OChem a gift rather than a curse
Best professor I've had in the chemistry department by far. Bowman made organic chemistry fun and interesting and much less terrifying. Inspired me to change my major! If you have to take organic chemistry, do yourself a favor and take it with Bowman. He gives more than ample practice and teaches in an engaging manner. Great Professor!
Matt is probably one of the best professors I have ever had. He is great lecturer and super approachable, actually cares about his students and wants us to understand the material. The amount of resources he provides is incredible. The nature of the course make the material really difficult but he actually makes ochem fun and doable.
Matt Bowman is one of the best professors I've ever had. The amount of time and effort he puts into the class is amazing. He makes handouts and videos for every subject he goes over. He is such a nice and funny guy and I wish I could have him again. His tests aren't easy by any means but he gives you all the material you could ever want to succeed.
Matt is incredible. He is by far the best professor I have had thus far. He truly cares about students and how they understand the material. He makes copious amounts study materials (i.e., video lectures, problem sets, power-points) to get more practice. His exams are very fair, but can be difficult. I hope to have him again at some point!
Loved this class! Matt was awesome- no homework and practice exams very similar to the real exams. Class overall was not that much work and very enjoyable.
Ochem is super tough, but Matt actually makes it enjoyable. Matt is super hilarious and he gives clear lectures. The problem sets and practice exams are optional but they are really useful. He is easily available if you need help due to the long office hours and he opens up extra office hours before exams. TL;DR: if you need Ochem, pick Matt.
Matt Bowman is seriously the greatest! Organic chemistry is one of the hardest experiences of my academic career, but he made it bearable! You can tell he really loves the subject, and that makes the class more worthwhile and easier to get through! He is a fantastic teacher, and moving around your schedule to get him as your teacher is worth it!!
By far the best professor I have ever had at UW Madison, which is saying something. If you get a chance to take a class with Bowman, do it. The lectures are both hilarious and informative. He very clearly explains topics with an appropriate amount of background information. My only complaint is that he won't be teaching 345 next semester.
Matt was very flexible in his availability for his students. His video lectures are powerful for use as a study tool as well as his participation in PLA which is an option for students who desire the extra help in this course. He also explained the material with enough depth that understanding it helped more on the exams than memorizing it.
Willing to help those in need. Material is easily learned and provide excellent support for MCAT.
Bowman is an incredible teacher. His lectures are interesting, he gives out a ton of practice problems, and he is always available to help outside of class. That being said the class isn't easy. Make sure you really know how to do the problems on the practice test as they are similar to the exam.
Bowman was without a doubt a good teacher. He does everything in his power to make sure his students know the material. With that being said, it's still a hard class. I had Bowman for both 343 and 345 and ended up getting a C and D respectively. Be sure to utilize his resources, and don't have a heavy course load when taking O Chem.
Matt went out of his way to make the class more understandable to all the students in his class. The amount of office hours he had was astounding. At office hours Matt never gave the answer, but just asked more questions to lead me to the answer. Matt is a fantastic professor both in lecture and outside.
Matt is a great guy and a great prof. You can tell he enjoys the subject and teaching it. He wants you to do well in the course. Chem 345 is a hard class no matter who you have. He gives out a lot of practice problems and practice exams, which are very similar to the actual exam. Only complaint is that lectures can get disorganized.
Professor Bowman is very good at helping his students succeed. If you are like me, however, don't go to lectures. It seems counter-intuitive, but he posts all the information you are responsible for online in short videos (shorter than the given lecture). With an 18 credit schedule, that was insanely helpful!
Professor Bowman is hands-down the best professor I've ever had. Ochem is difficult on its own, but Matt clears the path for you to really dive in and learn what you need to know. His online videos are fantastic and great for better understanding. Want success? Do the homework he provides and stay diligent. He is truly cares about his students.
Very helpful, and guides you down the path to succeed in Ochem. Exams were a bit tricky at times, but if you do the practice problems, you should be fine. His lectures were enjoyable and he has a really nice personality.
He is an awesome professor that makes Ochem as manageable as it can be. My advice for doing well in the course: Do the problem set worksheets as they are given (one almost every lecture) and understand them. Also, reread your notes everyday, takes 10 minutes a day and makes a huge difference.
Quite possibly my favorite prof I have ever had. I was lucky enough to have Matt for both 343 and 345. He is extremely dedicated to teaching which is hard to find in a research based university. Ochem isn't easy so be prepared to work but I would highly recommend taking it with Matt. He'll always be there if you have a question.
Matt is THE professor to get for o chem. He's super nice, personable, and extremely helpful. Class is based on 4 quizzes and 5 exams. Matt posts lots of helpful videos and worksheets to help understand the material better. Lots of practice exams to prepare for actual exams. The best professor hands down!!!
Best professor at UW-Madison.
Matt Bowman was such a great professor. He made ochem (somehow) easy to learn. His grading was clear and he posts all lectures online so if you miss a class here and there it's no problem at all. Matt has been the best professor I've had so far and I highly recommend taking his class.
Matt was the best professor I ever had. I'm not doing too well in the class, but that's because OChem is a hard subject and I did not put in the study time necessary. He is the only reason I am managing to understand ochem.
Best professor I've ever had at UW Madison. I was worried to take ochem but he makes it extremely clear and understandable. Not nearly as hard as chem109. It is a very visual/conceptual course so don't just memorize the material
Matt is one of the best professors I have ever had at UW-Madison. The way he teaches makes is so concise. He actually cares about teaching and making sure the students understand the material. The class consists of 4 quizzes and 5 exams. He also allows you to use a notecard for the final exam! None of my other Ochem professors ever allowed that.
Bowman is an excellent teacher of organic chemistry. He is great at explaining one-on-one questions and is always going out of his way to help his students. His lectures are dense but they cover much needed information. Put the work into this class and you will get out a good great. Fair grading and just an exceptional professor all-around.
Matt's lecture is really worth taking. His course website is really good. Lecture notes, lecture videos, practice exams and video of some answer keys are all available and updated really fast. He himself is a really nice person. Funny and caring. A good choice if you want to learn organic chemistry.
Seriously the best professor I have ever had. Super helpful, knowledgeable, ben hilarious. Such a cool funny guy. We even mad we aquote page for him because we were such fans of his humor.
Easily the best professor I have ever had. He made Ochem, an already difficult subject, into something attainable and worth learning for me. Really cares about his students and is one of the best educators at UW by far.
Simply THE BEST professor EVER! I was lucky to have Matt for both Ochem classes and he made me like chemistry again after horrible experience with gen chem. He has so many resources, makes himself always available, exams are totally fair. He's always online on Piazza to answer questions. Matt is the only professor that knew how to deliver material.
Fun guy who teaches concepts very clearly. You just have to practice the material a good amount to be prepared for the tests bc it is harder on tests than the examples in class. Overall a good class.
Matt is the best instructor on campus hands down. He cares about his students and puts as much effort into your success as you do. He offers many practice problems, practice exams, and further resources. Hes funny and records his lectures which is very helpful. Extremely intelligent yet personable man. I LOVED his teaching.
Matt Bowman is by far the best professor I have had at UW Madison. He volunteers so much of his time to help his students; he clearly cares that you do well. Matt is an effective teacher and makes his lectures interesting. I would advise to take advantage of his office hours; they were extremely helpful. Definitely recommend having this professor.
This guy is a god. Gotta be one of the better professors at UW. If you're taking 343 or 345, you gotta make sure you get Bowman because he is quite simply the best. 4 tests 3 quizzes and a final. Tough class, but your grade is completely on you. Definitely manageable getting a really good grade with really hard work. Also hilarious. Love this guy!
Best prof I've ever had. I'd heard how great he was, but was nervous because his first few lectures were taught in a way I didn't like. Turns out it was a strange initial unit and the rest of the semester was incredible. No textbook needed, there's a little random extra credit, & try to go to lecture because you miss bits if you only watch online.
awful hard class but the prof made it better
I believe bowman is the guy they based the tv show big bang theory on. He is sheldon cooper.
Matt is in the top two best professors I've ever had in my life. His lectures are recorded, crystal clear, and organized. He is unbelievably accessible outside of class, even hosts 7-10 ADDITIONAL office hours before exams. He's a bit of a weird guy but truly wants you to succeed. His practice exams, study materials, and packets are INVALUABLE.
Matt Bowman is incredible. I echo everything that has been said. The best thing for me was how unbelievably organized this guy is. He breaks every single unit down on Canvas into each specific section (problem sets, problem set keys, lec videos by topic, lec videos by date etc) He also personally uploads your graded quizzes, who else does that???
Bowman is one of the single greatest human beings on this planet. He is a great professor and just a super likable person. I LOVE THIS MAN.
Fantastic professor. I had Esselman for 343 and Bowman for 345 and I think they are both great, but if you could choose I would choose Bowman, he has more practice material and office hours so he is available to help more. Bowman's exams are similar to the practice ones, and his exams are easier than Esselmans was.
Really tough class but Bowman makes it so much better. Arguably the best teacher I have ever had. Really nice, funny, caring guy. Practice exams and worksheets are keys to doing well in the class. Go out of your way to get him as a prof, you won't regret it.
Matt is the best instructor I have ever had. Exams were very fair and he gives you all the tools you need to succeed. There is a little extra credit (.01%). Lectures are fun to go to. There are 6+hrs of office hours per week with nearly an extra 20 before the final. A very caring, friendly, and funny guy. Matt is seriously the best!
The best lecturer I've ever had at the UW. Super laid back, insists you call him Matt and not Dr. Bowman. He has a natural gift for teaching. Has 7+ hours of office hours the Saturday before every exam. He will give you a list of exactly what can be on the test, and what will not be. That being said, Ochem is always a hard class, regardless of prof
Best professor I've ever had. I really wanted to actually work for his class and not do the bare minimum. His lectures are informative, clear, and funny. He's not just reading a power point, he's showing you what's going on.
Do all the problem sets on time and once or twice. He gives you all the resources possible to succeed and you will as long as you use those resources. Lots of office hours available and lots of practice exams. Highly recommend.
Organic Chemistry is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken and I cannot wait until it is over. Despite that, Matt is one of my favorite professors. He is incredibly helpful and makes everything clear. He is always around to answer questions. He is one of the nicest people I have ever met.
Great lecturer and very kind/supportive and funny professor. Would take again.
I cannot say enough good things about him. He is such a good guy and cares about his students. He gives you all the tools you need to succeed and makes ochem manageable.
Fantastic professor. Seriously. Hands-down best teacher in all of high-school and college that I have ever had. Very VERY clear expectations for what he wants. Lectures can be skipped because everything is posted online, however I suggest you come. Advice: No book. Do all problem sets WEEKLY. Study every week. Go to discussion. Do practice exams.
Organic chemistry was extremely difficult but I dont think I couldve passed without having Matt as a professor. I switched my schedule just to make sure I can have him next semester. His exams closely mirror the practice exams and he uploads additional practice for important concepts. If you have the chance make sure you get him for ochem!
Organic Chemistry is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken, but having Matt as a professor made it enjoyable. He records all lectures and attendance is not taken so it is super flexible. He goes at a great place and is sure to explain everything several times! I can't say enough great things about Matt! (Class is curved)
No one likes OChem but Matt is by far one of the best professors at Madison. He goes above and beyond to give you the resources to succeed. And it is evident that Matt wants everyone to succeed. The class is a lot of work but Matt is awesome.
BOWMAN IS GODS GIFT STUDENTS. He wants you to succeed and gives you every resource to. He's so funny and makes himself very available and accessible. If you can take his class, DO IT. He makes really helpful videos so theres no reason to get the book.
He is the one of the best profs for o chem
great professor!
Matt is an AMAZING professor. I struggle a lot with chemistry, but he makes it all worth it. He gives great feedback and is very supportive of making student's dreams come true. He has a quick wit making difficult content easier to understand. 10/10, if I had to take him again I would.
Wasn't sure about him at first, but he's actually a very nice guy who knows his stuff. He's a little eccentric but not in a bad way, and although he's super smart he cares about his students and tries to help them succeed. I still don't really like organic chemistry, but I like Matt Bowman.
Best professor I've ever had. Great person and teacher, cares a lot about his student's success!! Just attend lecture, do ALL the problem sets and practice exams, make flashcards, majority of ochem is just putting in the time, exams are not made to trick you, you can do well if you do the practice exams he gives you, he gives 7 for each exam
one word: amazing. He is very helpful, very nice to his students. His exams are also considerably easy with a few tricky questions. I enjoyed OChem with him.
Bowman's lectures are very thorough about explaining why a reaction works the way it does, and he gives insightful ways of thinking about reactions. He gives you the tools to understand how Ochem works rather than having you memorize. Make sure you do all of the practice problems available and you should do fine.
All the others commenters here are indeed correct. No one has mentioned though that he does use favoritism: I've only ever seen him drinking Dr Pepper.
Matt is a great lecture. He really helps build a good foundation in the subject for you to move forward with. He provides an insane number of extremely good resources for preparing for exams (all available via canvas). With a professor like Matt, it's difficult to see why OChem has such a bad reputation. If you work hard at all you will succeed.
Matt is purely AMAZING. He is an incredible professor. O chem is a doable course as long as you put in the time outside of class. His exams are challenging, but fair if you put in the time studying. He is very considerate of the students lives and that o chem isn't everything. Work hard for him in this course and it will come out in your favor.
Matt was a GREAT instructor and was always open to answering questions during and outside of lecture. He genuinely cares about his students and does everything he can to help you out (while still keeping the class fair). He also provides LOTS of practice material that is extremely helpful for the exams. Overall a really great guy.
Simply amazing, I struggled a lot, but by the second semester, I pulled through. He has a lot of office hours, where you can have fun and get so much help. He understands and comforts you both academically and personally. Plenty of practice exams, his questions are very straightforward, test materials reasonably. He truly is a gift to humanity.
I've had him for both semesters and he really is the best. He genuinely cares for his students by holding lots of office hours and giving us the resources to succeed. I recommend doing all the problems sets and practice exams, and clearing up questions at office hours because organic chemistry isn't straightforward and it's okay to ask questions.
Great professor. I chose to take his summer chem 345 specifically because he was not teaching it in the fall. I wish he was going to teach chem 344 as well. He does not let you use note cards on exams until the final exam where he lets you use a full sized sheet of paper. He is very helpful, funny and has a great personality. Made 343 and 345 great
Matt is the best! If nothing else convinces you, he held five hours of office hours on a Sunday! Ochem is difficult no matter what, but Matt gives lots of problem sets that give a clear idea of how to prepare. Exams are easier than other instructors, but with less curve. If you're reading this because you're wondering if you should pick him, DO IT!
Matt is a great professor. He is available a lot outside of class for questions, especially before the exam (he would host like 8 hour office hour sessions). He also does a really good job at explaining concepts and the reasoning behind many reactions. I would take a class with him again if I could.
I'd rather slowly peel my tongue off a cold pole than read an OChem textbook, but Matt's lectures are so engaging. He is so superior to every other OChem prof, it is hilarious. Everything you want in a prof: MATT. The weekend before every exam Matt sits in Union South for 20+ HOURS to help people with Chemistry. Literally could not be better.
Given that OCHEM is generally a tough course, he tries his best and simplifies concepts greatly. It is a lot of memorization but he succeed in making the material to make more sense. Plus he did he absolute best in the COVID period with the early recorded lectures and alternative effective ways in changing the marking aspects.
I was very bad at organic chemistry and discouraged due to my past ochem professor, but Matt made me enjoy it and he taught it well. Hes fair, smart, respectable, and overall knows how to teach. He trains you to put in your best work, and whether you use organic chemistry in your life or not, he made this course worth it. Take him 100% over others
O chem is extremely difficult, but Matt does his very best to make this class manageable. His lectures are thorough and comprehensive and he provides packets of pertinent practice problems for each lecture. DO THE PROBLEM SETS! This course is by no means easy, but watch lectures + do problem sets + do practice exams and you will be more than fine!
Matt Bowman is a God. During the COVID-19 pandemic he posted lectures early and allowed us to earn extra points for studying. After every lecture he provided a problem set to keep up with the material. DO THEM. If you fall behind it'll take an army to catch back up. He would have 16 hours of office hours before every exam. I love this man
Matt Bowman is literally a gift from heaven. I have never met a professor more accomodating than him. He truly wants his students to succeed and will give them all the resources necessary. Tough exams but that is the world of Ochem. I will definitely miss his morning Dr. Pepper and 10+ hours of office hours dearly.
Bowman is a nice guy and does a good job teaching Ochem. He cares about his students, but he does teach a large STEM lecture so don't expect one-on-one attention. Do the problem sets he provides especially the second half of the semester. He hold office hours on weekends before exams. The second exam is hard, and the third will bury you in content.
Hands down the best professor at UW. He makes him self SO accessible outside of class. I don't think he sleeps. His lectures are funny, and even better, straight forward. He MAKES SURE you are told what you're expected to know for exams. He broke things down very simply, which other professors won't. Stay on top of problem sets & ask questions.
Best Prof ever met!!!!! He is such an inspirational teacher and makes ochem so much fun.
One of the best professors I've had. He goes really in depth, has a ton of practice exams, and is very clear on what exactly will be on the exams. Just 4 exams that were much more manageable than 343 since he gave so much help and had 8 hours of office hours each Saturday before the exams.
Best prof I ever met so far my entire life! He has extra office hours over the weekend at Union South before every exams, like the entire weekend. As long as you are willing to learn, he will be there to teach you. He is really good at responding emails and answering questions: I asked a question, he recorded a YouTube video for me. Cannot express
Matt is seriously the epitome of your modern-day professor. O-Chem sucks in general but he's there for you through it. He clearly loves his job, his subject, his TAs, and his students. Easily my favorite professor thus far. He's always available for questions (so don't be afraid to ask!)
All I will say is look at the number of reviews this guy has. It is insane how well loved he is, but he totally deserves it because of how nice he is to his students
I was nervous to take ochem but Matt made it so much better. He not only provided lots of practice problems, great lectures and supplemental videos but was extremely caring and responsive to questions. My favorite thing about the class was his practice exams that were formatted exactly like the exams. Best professor Ive had so far 10/10!!
Matt was such a great professor for CHEM341 especially considering we were online due to the pandemic. His lecture notes were not the easiest to follow along with, but he made himself super accessible outside of lecture and truly cares for his students. You can tell he really wanted all of us to succeed. Overall one of the best professors ever!
Ive had my fair share of professors and it doesnt get any better than Matt! People can make ochem out to be really scary but Matt will give you the tools to succeed. You need to put in work as this is no clap for credit, but Matt provides a bunch of practice exams, problem sets, piazza, and office hours to help you if you want to do well.
Professor Bowman was awesome! His lectures were pre-recorded and very easy to follow. I dreaded organic chemistry coming into this class but he made it my favorite chemistry class yet! Tests were fair and he provided plenty of extra help and office hours.
Absolute gem of a prof. Holds several office hours ON WEEKENDS before exams, explains everything well (and with several methods), and is very clear in grading/expectations. Do all the problem sets and practice exams, and ask every question you ever have on Piazza. Ochem doesn't need to be hell if you take Bowman.
Best professor I've ever had! I hated ochem but Bowman changed my perspective completely. Even during COVID, he does everything he can to accommodate students virtually. He even added an office hour date when I emailed him about having class during his other 2. He also explains everything clearly, my highest recommendations for this professor!
I had heard nothing but good things about him, but he has NO idea how to teach an online class. It is literally a blank white screen for over an hour, monotone slow voice and zero engagement is even possible. Not sure if this is useful because I am sure he will never have to teach it this way again
I was SO scared to take ochem because everyone says it's one of the hardest classes. Not with Matt! He explains topics in the simplest/clearest way possible and actually goes above and beyond to help students. One of the few profs who cares about student mental health. His practice exams are EXACTLY like the real exam, so definitely do all of them!
Matt was amazing. Ochem is a hard class, there is no way around that. But he gives you all the resources you need to succeed and is readily available outside class to help. I loved going to his office hours and he provides enough practice exams that I never felt unprepared going into a midterm. Take ochem with him if you can!
I literally could not ask for a better ochem prof. Matt makes things simple to understand and his exams are super fair and he doesn't try to trick you. I did pretty bad in gen chem, but ochem was 100x easier. I am genuinely very upset that Matt isn't teaching Chem 345 next semester. Focus on Psets and practice exams, discussion isn't helpful IMO
O-Chem is a difficult subject but he tries to make it as accessible as possible. He always has extra office hours and is very clear on what will be on the exam. There are tons of optional practice sets and practice exams. It is very clear what is expected of you. But his lectures are a little disorganized sometimes, and the textbook is useless.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! People always complains Ochem is hard, but he made it so understanding. He was available many HOURS over the weekend before tests (unheard of). I'm not saying it's a walk in the park , but if you watch all his lectures, do all the practice problems, all the practice exams, and go to office hours when confused you'll do great!
Definitely reccommend o chem with Matt! He takes his time to explain things and is very available outside of class for questions. I'd take advantage of problem sets and practice exams for studying.
Professor Bowman was a really great teacher! After hating general chemistry, he made me actually enjoy learning about organic chemistry. It is a hard class but found that extra recommended book problems were very helpful. Also cares a lot and spends his weekends before exams in the union to answer any questions. Would recommend him over any other.
His lectures are amazing and he always posts videos of them on canvas afterwards which I found super helpful. A textbook is listed in canvas but I never got it and I did fine just using his lectures. The tests are very difficult but the curve makes up for it. There is also a decent amount of memorization expected of you.
Matt is an absolute legend!! Office hours almost EVERY day in the week leading up to exams. His lectures are clear and don't make you feel like you need to have studied intensely beforehand to understand what he's saying (like some of the other ochem professors). Also a pretty funny guy and very easy to interact/connect with in general.
Amazing. He made organic chemistry interesting and bearable... definitely a lot better than a lot of other 343 lecturers.
AMAZING TGASDJF BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER EVER HAD.
talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique... don't take ochem with anyone else. probably one of the best profs I've had at UW. everything he taught was clear, the TAs were so good, and his practice exams literally reflect the real exams. totally recommend.
Bowman's lecture is wonderful i have to say. He could use vivid analogy and clear drawing to help you understand the o chem. The design of exam is clever, but the content is quite difficult. That is organic chemistry!
Professor Bowman has no idea how difficult the material in his class is and has zero empathy for students who are struggling. Avoid him at all costs
Great professor, definitely very knowledgeable and knows what he is doing. Very lighthearted guy who cracks jokes during lectures and overall a very approachable professor. Exams can be hard but they are extremely similar to the practice/past exams that are available to you. Overall, one of the best professors I've had on campus so far.
Really liked him. He was really good at teaching the subject. You MUST practice on the practice worksheets and exams to do well on the actual exams. They are formatted almost identical to the real exam. Fun guy, little weird but learned a lot.
Matt was absolutely fantastic! Effectively simplified difficult concepts, was available outside of class to help students, and exams were fair.
TAKE HIS CLASS. Perfectly explains concepts, caring, wants you to succeed, and drops the lowest test and quiz. Grading is only based on 3 midterms, a final, and 5 quizzes, but he gives TONS of great test prep. If you come to lecture + discussion and do all the practice tests + daily psets, you'll be totally fine. By far the best professor I've had.
Matt was such a great professor and super willing to help students outside of class. Lots of practice exams given and office hours everyday for a week before exams. However, don't slack off on preparing like I did! I thought general chemistry was pretty easy so I was lazy last semester and I ended up with a B. Amazing professor, difficult class.
Take Matt's class.
Bowman is fine, but don't expect to do well in his class unless you plan on caring about his class more than any other class you have. Not very approachable and usually doesn't respond to my emails, or if he does, it's pretty much never helpful
Here is what I will say: W Professor for the amount of office hours and time he gives available. His lectures are handwritten live in class and doesn't say much outside what he writes. Doesn't lecture specific problems, purely concepts that you have to put together yourself. However, with ample practice exams you know what is expected of you.
Matt was a GREAT professor and very personable! I really enjoyed the class even though I did poorly (o-chem just did not mesh well with me no matter how hard I tried). He was very communicative, and understanding, and often cracked jokes in lectures. Would take this course with him again!
Matt is amazing. He makes such a difficult class like o chem better. Before exams he would literally hold office hours for hours and hours, he was so accessible. He also posts many practice exams that are identical to the format of the exam. IF YOU ARE TAKING O CHEM TAKE IT WITH MATT!!
Matt is both an exceptional instructor and person. His office hours allow you to seek ample 1:1 support. It is clear from the start that O-Chem is your battle but he does his best to support you the whole way. I had Matt consecutively for both 343 and 345. He is by far the best chemistry professor at UW-Madison.
His lectures are amazing. He is able to explain things with extreme clarity. You need to focus on reasoning yourself through every bit of knowledge he tried to impart (his lectures is definitely sufficient for you to do so) instead of reckoning on your pathetic notecard during the exam.
Matt Bowman is an awesome professor. I had a really rough semester, and was considering dropping out this class. Matt made time for me outside of his office hours, to help me review my past exams. He is super caring and helped me pass this very difficult course. He knows his class is hard, but wants his students to succeed.
matt is the best professor ive had at uw. he is very accessible outside of class and you can tell he cares about his students. he knows his class if hard but is always willing to help. his exams are difficult but pretty fair and you are well prepared if you do his practice exams. if youre taking ochem take it with matt!!!
Matt is awesome!! Easily the best professor I've had. Took him for both 343 and 345 and he keeps the same relative exam and lecturing style for both classes. Exams are difficult, but it is organic chemistry. He gives a ton of resources for preparing for exams (problem sets, practice exams, office hours). Take him if you can!!!
Bowman is an amazing teacher. But he does expect a lot of his students, so, if you don't put the effort in, you won't do well. Definitely go to his office hours. I suck at chem, but I went to them and I was able to do pretty well on tests, so take advantage of them. Our grade is only based on tests and quizzes though which sucked.
Matt is an amazing professor. He hand writes his lectures during class time so they are easy to follow. Many practice problems, practice exams, and recorded lecture topics are posted to supplement lectures. Exams can be tough but practice exams are very helpful and Matt is frequently available for office hours especially weekends before exams.
Incredibly kind and understanding - went out of his way to work with me when I had to take incompletes in all my classes halfway through the semester. Grade based on 3 tests and 4 quizzes, but drops the lowest of each. Funny, clear, and interesting lectures. UNDERSTAND+DO THE PRACTICE TESTS and you'll be fine.
Dr. Bowman makes Organic Chemistry seem much easier than how it is explained in the provided textbook and he posts practice exams that look exactly like the actual exams which greatly reduces the stress during the exam. Furthermore, he is open to explaining chemistry topics even if they are outside the scope of the class.
Dr. Bowman is a phenomenal lecturer. He teaches with passion, effectively and efficiently. It is a difficult class with challenging concepts and he makes it much less intimidating than it otherwise could be. Exams are difficult but he is a very fair grader and the curve ends up working out. It's graded by few things, but all ochem classes are.
Matt is an incredible professor. This is not an easy class, but if you put in the work and ask for help, Matt will help you. Textbook is optional and entire class is graded on 3 quizzes and 4 tests. He puts out practice problems but there is no homework for grade. If you put in the time and work on your own, it is possible to do well in this class.
I am someone who struggles in chemistry and was extremely nervous about taking organic chemistry, however Dr. Bowman made my experience the best I could ask for! All lectures are recorded and he described concepts in a very digestible manor. Numerous practice exams that are identical to the concepts that will be tested on exams to help students.
I really enjoyed having him for Organic Chem, he made a really tough class less stressful and understood what students were going through with the material. He made it very clear what would be on each exam and quiz, and gave every resource needed to do well in the class. He was extremely accessible outside class with many office hours. Take him.
Matt is an incredible person who cares about his students. There were ample practice materials and supplementary videos. His lectures were winding and disorganized. He often had no transitions in thought or even labels to concepts. There were unspoken rules to problems he wouldn't outright mention in lecture.
Best lecturer ever seen in ochem. Maybe the easiet quizs and exams among all ochem sections. Matt is such an interesting guy who will open a can of Dr. Pepper while talking on lecture mic, which might be the only I can never agree with him... I mean, coca-cola is the best
Ochem is a hard class. That being said, Matt is the best person to teach it if you have to take it. My least favorite thing about Matt is that the entire class is basically graded on the exams. My favorite thing about him is his office hours and supply of practice problems. This is the only class I've taken where both went beyond what I needed.
Matt amazed me all semester with how he added so many office hours and made himself available for students. He knew if there was a tough topic coming up, he would add extra office hours. O chem definitely isnt easy, but it was doable for someone like me who isnt as motivated to study all the time. Lectures are recorded and he always has extra stuff
Matt is absolutely perfect and the best Professor I've ever had. He genuinely cares about our success. He is very straight forward and clearly identifies what we need to know for exams and quizzes. I had him for both Chem 343 and 345 and love his lecture style. He never goes a lecture without a Dr. Pepper and he is so relatable and awesome. GO MATT
Matt is the best. So many extra office hours that are extremely useful. His practice exams set you up for the actual exams nicely, and you get notecards, so literally just write everything you learned on them. I had him for 343 and 345 and I wouldn't want any other professor. He made Ochem not only bearable, but fun.
Best teacher I've ever had. Honestly cares about his students, puts in a lot of time outside of class to make sure we understand things. Just take all your ochem lectures with Matt and you won't regret it.
Matt was a great professor. I had him for two courses and he was wonderful, he wants students to do well and provides every possible resource for you to be able to do so. He is also extremely understanding in times of emergency: when I had a family crisis he rearranged a time for me to take the final exam. If you have to take ochem, get Matt.
If you are a bio major and have to take OC class. Please, please, please choose Matt! He's an amazing and knowledgeable teacher who cares about his students a lot. A funny and weird guy. I know OC may be most of the students like me, sometimes boring and quite difficult to understand. But he can show your the mechanism clearly and the rules behind.
Matt is incredibly funny, caring, and quirky. Love his personality. I liked that he didn't rush thru lecture content too fast. He gives you all the resources you need to succeed plus more. HOWEVER ochem was the nastiest most horrible class ever so consider a tutor if chem isn't your jam like me. If you have to take it, take it w Matt & good luck!!
Matt Bowman is the best professor I have ever had at UW-madison. I was super scared going into Ochem 1, but he made it seem learning it was something anyone was capable of. Had a ton of extra office hours the week before the exam and was always very approachable and gave great feedback on questions. Would definitely recommend him!!!
Bowman rules. He's very good at teaching you what you actually need to know for the test. He's funny and chill. All the lectures are recorded and he provides a whole bunch of study material too. OChem SUCKS but thats not his fault. 10/10 would recommend
made ochem fun. Also he has an insane amount of office hours. He clearly LOVES to teach
I was shocked by how much I learned during lectures; Matt explains the concepts so well compared to the other professors I've had. I just wish there were more check-ins to keep me accountable. He cares a lot about his students and makes himself available to help.
Matt is by far the best teacher I have had for chemistry. He is knowledgeable and personable and takes time out of his day for each of his students if needed. He answers questions clearly and doesn't mind repeating himself. The class is based exclusively off of exams and quizzes so keep that in mind when you sign up if you aren't a strong tester.
THE BEST chem professor you will have, genuinely. Your final grade is heavily dependent on exams, (and 2 quizzes). It's organic chemistry, it's hyped up for a reason. Just memorize and practice a lot. Bowman makes it very clear and honest what you need to know.
Great professor. Very knowledgeable and straightforward in what he expects from his students. Only warning is that your grade will be determined by only a few things. However, he is always willing to help and very open to going out of his way for others. Would recommend him if you plan to take organic chemistry!
Matt was one of the most accessible professors I have ever had. He sets up extensive office hours before exams(like 5-6 hrs)and never passes up a question during or after lectures. He posts lecture recordings without fail and is super quick with piazza. Matt will never make you feel like you have a dumb question and truly cares about his students.
One of the best professors I've had for any course. You can tell he's passionate about the course content and wants his students to succeed. He gives a lot of practice material and additional video lectures on each topic he covers. We had two take-home quizzes and four exams. He made ochem a very manageable and even fun class!
The best professor I have had. Period. Cares about his students and their success, demonstrated by his extensive office hours during week AND on weekends (in 5-6 hour intervals before exams). Above all, Matt is an incredible human being with an immaculate sense of humor and a Dr. Pepper in hand that levels well with his students. Highly recommend.
He's definitely very enthusiastic and an entertaining lecturer. At times the class felt a bit disorganized.
Obviously the topic was difficult but the professor made the class enjoyable and more understandable. He was also very kind and caring during a face-to-face encounter.
Goat talk 🐐🐐
Such a kind professor who clearly truly cares about his students. He explains concepts clearly and always has extra office hours on weekends before exams. He makes students feel capable about taking a difficult class and exams are never a surprise. Extremely grateful to have taken organic chemistry with Matt.
Hardest class that I have taken in a while, but with Matt Bowman anything is possible. He made all his students feel welcome, and he had very clear expectations and plenty of availability to meet with him and answer questions.
Matt definitely made O Chem bearable. He explained the topics in a way that was not daunting or overwhelming and helped us to understand the material fully. Would highly recommend taking this course with him.
Professor Bowman was good at teaching by giving many practice problems. He was very helpful with preparing for exams as he gave more practice exams than any other college class.
Don't take ochem if you can't get into Bowman's lectures. He is accommodating, knowledgeable, and most importantly an expert at actually TEACHING the material. He releases tons of practice problems well ahead of exams which is a godsend. The class is very challenging but Bowman is your best shot at ochem success at UW.
Had him for both 343 and 345 and can't recommend him enough! Provided lots of ungraded practice problems and was very accessible outside of class. Matt's lectures are pretty easy to follow and the practice tests he provides the week prior to an exam are VERY much in line with what you'll see on the test. One of the best teachers I've had at UW.
Pretty good for 343, would not recommend for 345 since his style varies and won't be of much help for 344.
Prof. Bowman gives engaging lectures and useful lecture notes. He sets very clear expectations on what will be on the test, and there are lots of practice problems. Organic chemistry is a very difficult subject, but this class was manageable.
The coolest, quirkiest guy on campus. Class is difficult because it's OChem, but you know what you're getting into. Has incredibly engaging lectures, is open and available, and is hilarious. Very test heavy, but he posts so many practice exams and study materials. Tough but fair grading policies. Plays by his own rules, but an incredible professor.
Matt Bowman was a really good lecturer and helped break down difficult content. He can be a little all over the place in lecture but he'll take the time to make sure concepts really stick. Super available outside of class and genuinely cares about the success of his students. Lots of practice exams that are basically identical to the real thing.
Dr. Bowman is super helpful and accessible outside of class. He genuinely cares about his students. I found his lectures slow and hard to sit through but he offers tons of resources to help you succeed. 343 is hard no matter what prof you have but I would recommend taking it with him. Great prof. I would take with 345 with him given the choice!!
Super great professor, the way he explains things really helped me understand this class, and usually I suck at chemistry!
Oh boy oh boy, where do I even begin. Some people may think Lebron or Jordan is the GOAT, but they have never attended a Bowman lecture. This may seem like glazing, but it's not glaze if its Bowman. His exams have clear guidelines, and he gives loads of practice. He is a great lecturer and is extremely committed to helping you learn. GOAT status
He was an okay professor. He did seem like he liked the material that he was teaching and he tried to joke around with the class. He did however went over example extremely fast not allowing time for students to write them down.
Great guy, held endless hours of office hours the weekends before exams. Cared about students. Explained things slowly and clearly. One warning is that he teaches the class very differently from the other professors.
Highly recommend Matt. Not overly difficult with him because he was awesome. He hand wrote notes on the projector which was easy to follow in lectures. Extra office hours occurred prior to exams. Problem sets were optional but SUPER helpful. Exams were representative of covered content if you studied diligently. #imissmybro
Oh golly gee, where do I even start. Matt Bowman is GOAT. Exams were lowkey a little tough but fair. He teaches the content concisely and accurately. Take this man if you can.
Matt is a kind and supportive professor who is very available and understanding. However, his class lacks structure, especially in lectures, which is very frustrating if you rely on clear explanations and organized teaching. If you're an independent learner who prefers figuring things out on your own, this class will work great for you.
Matt is an amazing O-Chem professor and I would highly recommend him any day of the week. He gives problem sets every lecture to practice what you have learned in lecture- and they are not graded. He gives tons of practice exams which is VERY similar to the real exam. TAKE MATT!
Why is everyone glazing??? His lectures were unorganized, and he would go on 30 minute tangents on things you would never see again. He would rarely tell you what topic we were discussing, and if class ended in the middle of a topic, you would be lucky to even go over it in the next class. He's also not funny and would slurp soda in the mic.
Matt was awesome! Although the class was only graded on a few things he gave tons of extra work that was super helpful. One of the best professors I've had at UW
Honestly I don't love him as much as everyone else does--he prefers listing out his rules for solving problems instead of explaining why. Honestly I rarely went to discussion and studied last minute-ish so I know I could have done better if I had more time (overdid it this sem.) His practice tests are just like the class and exams are fair.
He is the best. Super straightforward lecture and exams.
Bowman is a saint. Orgo is intimidating, but he isn't! He was so approachable and genuinely helpful during office hours, and his practice exams are such good practice for the real thing. His lectures always went by really fast and I really enjoyed having him as a professor.
Overall he is a nice guy who is very accessible if you need help outside of class. His teaching was just a little all over the place for me and his half explanations didn't really help (in his syllabus he even states that he doesn't know what he's doing). He's clearly knowledgeable but I didn't love his actual teaching style
At first I thought he was just goofy but it turns out he REALLY KNOWS not just the material, but also how to teach it. The subject is hard and he knows that, he is open about it being a weed-out class, but follow his lectures, do the practice problems, and be at the discussions to participate and ask questions and you'll be all good.
Matt's lectures were very in depth and were very easy to understand. He was also very willing to answer student questions and provided multiple opportunities for office hours before exams to ensure that students knew what they were being tested on. The practice exams were also very helpful because they were all the same format as the real exams.
He's probably one of the best teacher in hemistry department, friendly, helpful, exam easy if you practice enough. But my advice is, if you want to become an organic chemist in the future, if you plan to take more upper-level and complex ochem courses, Matt might not your best choice.
Hated O-chem however he made me hate it less, very quirky and funny guy, who is very knowledgable about ochem. Never went to office hours, probably why I almost failed the class, however the professor was very good and made a horrible ochem experience, much better. If you're taking ochem, this is the guy to have.
A gem among instructors. Excellent lecturer, passionate and caring, and goes above and beyond to make himself accessible to students. Everything is laid out clearly, and he genuinely wants students to succeed. Always makes time for student questions and is very willing to explain things more if needed.
Bowman is easily the best Ochem 2 professor that I had. He paces out the lectures and makes the content very easy to learn. The class is graded only on 4 exams and a few quizzes, but he allows for 1 exam drop and exam retakes if you score below 40%. As long as you pay attention and do all of the homework sets, then you will be ready for his exams!
