Don't expect anything above a C if you don't plan on hitting every class and don't be late. Prepare to be called out and questioned extensively. He is very subjective and not willing to work with you at all. The work is intense and not helpful to the rest of the class. The powerpoints don't help, and tests come from what he actually discusses

His classes are hard to follow. he just stands there and rambles in a voice that is hard to hear. and mainly has the TA's do all the work. I really enjoyed this class. Dr Childs is very personable and helpful and his lectures are interesting. He puts emphasis on doing the readings and coming prepared to say something about them in the discussion sections. Two essay exams, a research paper, and a short book review - do the work, and its not hard! I highly recommend this class.

This is a horrible class. There is no text book. I did every single reading, never missed a day, worked very hard and made C's. He cares little for his students, creates useless slides and instructs the TA's to be about the same way. Avoid this class like the plague.

Childs uses his TAs for all his grading unless you have him for the discussion section. Make friends with your TA quickly and don't miss the discussion classes. Exam questions are posted weeks in advance so do an outline for each. Take notes and ask your TA for clarification. Papers are on about 15% of the books, so they don't warrant the work.

How does he have this bad of a rating? He's really nice and he's not hard at all if you put forth a little bit of effort. No book, just come to class (not mandatory), take notes, and do the assignments like he asks/go by the "A" examples he posts, and DON'T use your phone in class. It's that simple. I hate history but I got an A AND enjoyed it! :)

If you're going to take this class, pray you get an easy TA. The lectures & material are easy to understand, but an A paper for one TA was a B/C for another. Rather dry lectures, but super passionate and incredibly knowledgeable about Latino American History and Culture. Exams are incredibly easy and papers are rather straightforward. Attendance isn't mandatory, but there are random quizzes in lecture with no set pattern.

Dr. Childs is a cool dude. His lectures can get a little uninteresting, but overall he's very knowledgeable. I despise history, so I did the bare minimum and got a B, but it's very possible to get an A. There's only 2 papers, 6 lecture quizzes, and 2 exams (he gives the questions beforehand).

I finished with an A in every one my 300 level classes this semester but made a B in this 100 level Carolina Core req. This class is taken too seriously for its infended purpose. Its more of an English than history class. If youre taking this class take it seriously. Go to class, participate in discussions, and study hard for the few exams

Dr. Childs is very interesting and friendly. He also cares about the students a lot. This class is not very work intensive, however, the TAs grade very hard. The class has 2 essays and 2 tests. Attendance is taken at discussion section, but it is not at lecture. Helen was a good TA. If you email her your essays she will edit them before you turn in

Lectures can put you to sleep if youre not into history, but Dr. Childs cares about his students and will gladly help you during office hours. Style of this course is 2 lecture days and 1 discussion class during the week. Take good notes on the weekly readings because you will need them for the essay exams! Exams are easy if you study and prepare.

The class itself was fine and so was Dr. Childs. The assignments seem like they should be easy. I don't know if it was just my TA, but I always felt like my essays and exams were graded too harshly and I constantly received Bs even though I would meet all of the requirements. This class has been more stress than it is worth. I would not recommend.

This class is easy as long as you keep up with the readings, study for exams, and take advantage of having a TA. Would definitely take another history course with Dr. Childs.

Discussion sections help a lot for the weekly questions and specific points in lecture. TAs were very helpful.

I've loved this class. His class structure is amazing - one day of lecture, group discussion (mandatory attendance) and an online work day. There's 2 papers, a midterm paper, and final paper. Work was super easy to manage and material was easy to digest. If you're not super into history he's still really easy.

He is pretty nice. The class it not a hard class most assignments are repetitive. Every week he lectures one day, then you'll have to do a reading with questions and a class discussion, and then another reading with questions. It is a lot of reading I will say he does get upset if the class does not participate. There is no tests just essays.
