Matt is a very interesting professor who knows the material. Tests are not hard, as long as you understand the concepts and don't just memorize facts. He is willing to help students outside class.
Matt was a very knowledgable teacher, but he teaches as though you are at a doctorate level. His exams are very difficult with many essay questions and they cover too much material. Example: 10 chapters, 34 questions on the exam...3 of which were essays
He expects a lot and gives a lot.
funny and writes all his notes on the board. tests are hard but almost directly from notes
tough exams...valuable course

Matt was a cool professor. He is willing to help students outside of class. You've got questions, he's got answers. Tests are not easy, you have to understand the concepts...memorization will only get you so far. His class is very helpful.
gilg is awesome. he probably takes more pride in his student's performance than any other professor that I have seen. his exams aren't as hard a people are saying. he just expects you to KNOW (not memorize) the material, and for you to be able to think

Awesome Teacher really good...tells you what he wants...you never feel lost..
Great class. Very good teacher. Writes everything on board, very knowledgable and not boring. Is not the easiest class, but he will work with you if you need. Tests pretty much reflect notes. Does take time and some hard work. I recommend this teacher, hes great.
Very knowledgable teacher, but bad attitude when it comes to "stupid questions" if you don't want to be humiliated, don't take him! Unless you can roll with the punches, than you'll be good!
gilg is the shiet! just don't expect it to be easy, but you'll sure learn from his class. Hardest class i ever took at unf. just ask for help, he'll direct you.
Gilg, is awsome! I would take him for any of my classes if it was offered. Very smart and cool. He talks to you like you are his buddy and that is what makes it so easy to understand the concept of the class.Tests are ok as long as you understand everything he writes down. Ask for help, VERY HELPFUL
Great Professor!!! Very helpful! The class was interesting, the Exams reflect the notes. Do not memorize material! Great lecturer and lab instructor. If you are taking Genetics, take him for lab as well!
Smart guy acts like a kid, dresses like one too, very lenghthy tests, and difficult at times, no curves, only two tests and one final, two much material on one test.
Very cool dud. Grades easliy. very fun class and you get to eat pizza!
HE ROCKS!!! JUST PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS!
Matt is the kind of teacher you want to have a beer with! Always kind and helpful. He cares about his students and he wants you to succeed. Tests and grading are tough but fair. Memorization won't work, so study and really learn the concepts. Lectures are interesting, and lab with him is a blast.
Ladies BEWARE, this one is a HOTTIE. Not to easy, but is straight to the point and fair. Make it a point to attend all lectures, because most of the exam material is from his notes not to mention, he is fun to look at!!!!DD, Thanks Matt. Ps, personal favors are not accepted.
Gilg is hot, but his tests are not as easy on your grade as he is on your eyes. STUDY. HE is a funny guy, he is helpful too. All of his lectures are on blackboard and the tests are mainly from the lecture.
What can you say about Matt, he is just awesome. He has an intelligence and charm that can make any man sexy... I know you are reading this Matt, so eat it up!! When turkey day comes around, fry one up for me!
Matt aka "Teach" is one of the few professors in the biology department that is really there for the students and want you to know and understand the material
He's a good teacher but the class is very hard.

Hard class, good instructor. Don't take a ton of classes while taking this, as you will definately need the study time. Book used for homework, and not much else.
It was a hard class but matt was very helpful. he is a great lecturer. funny too. i wouldn't take him for lab though.
Absolute awesome teacher, but Genetics is hard. Do not think otherwise. Attendance is mandatory, because he writes on the board. If you go and pay attention, you'll learn Genetics. He makes it so you can learn it, not just memorize and regurgitate on a test, just to forget it when you walk out.
Best Professor EVA!!! Make sure you go to all of the classes. He goes through a lot of information in one day. If you do the homework problems (on your own) you should do fine on the exams. Oh how I wish I could take genetics again!!! IMYB!
Great class! I think if I would have listened more instead of talking to my BFF I would have learned a lot more. Class is not to hard, just a lot of essays on the exam! Would recommend it to anyone who just wants to stare at GILG all day. "Dr. Gilg, is there anything I can do for you? ANYTHING!" LOL (He doesn't accept any personal favors,I tried!)
Matt Gilg teaches well and expects you to learn the concepts of genetics thoroughly and apply that knowledge. He sets out expectations well on the first day, so don't expect it to be easy. Study lecture notes and old exams from former students (not cheating). I have review sheets and old exams posted on my website, if you bother to ask around.
He's hot!!!!!
Great professor, intimidating at first but if you can stand sarcasm and give it right back to him he will like you. EXTREMELY helpful during office hours. Class is not mandatory but good luck trying to understand the concept on your own.
A hard class but Gilg makes the material easy to understand. I loved his teaching format and how he still uses the blackboard. My only gripe is that he doesn't prepare you for the exams at all. If you don't have exams from previous semesters I don't see how you could do it. He's pretty full of himself too, but that can be amusing.
Genetics. This class is hard as hell, even if you study with previous exams. Matt is THE most helpful professor in his office that I've had over my 3&1/2 years at UNF. Have a good sense of humor, go to his office hours for help, and STUDY THE CONCEPTS. Matt's exams test your knowledge of the concepts; you'll end up learning way more this way.
Well , he hardly knows his students names. The class is not interactive [ no participation involved..so no participation grades or attendance pts] ..Good luck on his exams because there is no idea of where he will pull the questions out of..[ that is whether it is all out of PowerPoint or book]
He is there more for himself than for the subject. Knows alot but leaves gaps between what he covers and the exam-- maybe c/c he wants to be needed...and he loves attention. Get old exams, pay homage, you'll be fine.
Not a super card class if you spend a long time studying. Tests are hard but gives pretty lenient partial credit on essay questions. Use old tests and his notes and dont need book (Except for problem sets but can easily borrow someones and photocopy the 1 or 2 pages) Does intentionally make some stuff hard. Most good reviews on here are him stroki
He is very fair. He KNOWS his stuff. His interest and dedication to the subject reflect in his enthusiasm. Studying the notes and old exams really helps to get the B. To get an A, perhaps reading the book would do it. Doing the homework problems is a must (trying to actually figure out these questions in order to build knowledge and understanding).
Dr. Gilg has got to be the coolest professor ever. He's very quick witted and knows his book stuff. I'd choose to take him for any course he's the professor for. Girls beware, his good looks may distract you. He's taken though.
Gilg knows his stuff. It is a hard class...study with old tests and you will be fine. GO TO CLASS. This is not an easy class, but as long as you study old tests and go to his office for help, you should pass =) good luck!!
He can be such a jerk! Really likes himself a lot. But the class is great even though genetics is tough. Its worth getting mad at him to push yourself through "overlearning" so you can ACE him and shut him down.
Aggravating! Too much of a rush at the end of the course; make sure you study as you go because the last two weeks are horrible. Matt's picky and sometimes mean but likes it if you dish it back. Always great with office hours, don't fear him.
This class is a challenge. So many people have copies of old tests and lab reports that if you don't your score will be the lowest. He knows the old stuff is out there so he makes the new tests more difficult. The final test is the hardest. Just find old copies and study lecture notes from class.
He is one of the worst professors I have ever had...
Evolution was a great class. Lots of discussion and challenges to explain directional developments. The final was a take-home and taught almost as much as the whole semester, due to the amount of research needed.
Excellent professor. Tough material. Awesome sense of humor. He's funny and knows his stuff. Expect to work hard and learn a lot.
Had him for evolution. Wow he has a way of making thing harder then they normally would be. You will learn in his class but your GPA, pride and personality will take a beating. All of his jokes are at your expense and when you are wrong you'll know it. Think about everything twice before you say it because he will press you to think.
Had him for Genetics, he was fantastic at lecturing but his exams were very long and hard. If you cannot commit to studying your ass off, take it with Lentz or Waddell. You must KNOW the material like the back of your hand to even pull off a B. the final exam was almost impossible, which he intended it to be. Not to mention the lab component is very time consuming with weekly assignments and even that isn't easy. DON'T WAIT to take this course your last semester, bite the bullet and do it ASAP.
He is a very intelligent professor but is very rude whenever I went for help. Don't let his rudeness get to u because he wants people to fear him.I didn't do well as I slacked off.Just work hard and go to class,it is not impossible to get a good grade on this lecture.
Smart guy. Know exactly what to say if you answer a question in class. He may make fun of you if you don't. No extra credit. 2 exams, 1 final. Fair grader, tough questions. The key to the class was to know Meiosis and DNA replication by heart.
Do not expect to not work your butt off in this class, do not underestimate this course for a standard bio 1,2, or 3 course. You will work your butt off if you intend to pass. Its hard, but Dr Gilg is fair and once you put in the work everything will click. Go to office hours study study study, understand what ur studying and you should pass.
This was the hardest Biology class I've ever taken, hands down. Exams are 80% of your lecture grade, and there are 2 exams and a final. Dr. Gilg gives you all of the information to succeed, its just up to you to do your homework and practice like a freaking mad man before the exams! I got an A in the class, but only because I worked my tail off!
It's hard to read his scribble on the board
Idk why he is rated so high. Only class I've ever considered dropping. He is pretty sarcastic, rude, not easy to approach, and very immature.. Does not give much indication of what will be on the tests at all. In fact you go in thinking you got it down, just to be VERY unpleasantly surprised. Pop quizzes, so you cant help but to be dragged to class
Spends lots of time on evolution. Like any bio class be prepared to study and know the phylogenetic tree. Ace all the HW assignments online. BRING YOUR CLICKER TO CLASS, its only 5% of your grade but I forgot mine so many times and he quizzes frequently. Funny guy not for the easily offended, he knows his stuff and will explain further if asked
Professor Gilg is an excellent teacher, and makes a difficult subject very easy to understand. I learned more in his class than I did in any other Biology class, and the information actually sticks! That being said, if you do not go to class you will fail. Go to the extra help sessions. The tests he gives are NO JOKE. Study and you can get an A.
He is a fair grader and gives partial credit. This class is hands-down the most challenging class I have had in my undergrad experience. Text book is for online chapter quizzes. Expect pop quizzes, and tedious hours doing mastering genetics. If you ask for help, you will receive it. If you think you know the material, you don't, study more!
Dr. Gilg breaks down genetics Barney style, and he writes all his notes on the board. Go to SI sessions if you want to pass this class. He teaches the basics, and SI will teach you how to problem solve. Practice! Rewriting notes really helped me a lot for the exam especially for Replication, transcription, & translation. Hard tests!
Dr. Gilg was a great teacher and this was probably the most challenging course in my undergrad. All of his tests are directly from lecture, I only used the book for online quizzes. Attend SI (Supplemental instruction) for help with the problem solving. Dr. Gilg provides the basics, you need SI to really apply that information. Two tests, one final.
Gilg does not have a fluffy personality and will say things that other more careful professors will not. BUT he actually does care about his students and is has a sarcastic sense of humor. Go to his office hours: he will ask you questions so don't be afraid to answer them. 3 Exams, reading/pop quizzes, 5-6 hmwks (mastering). He does not curve.
It will be necessary to have copies of old exams from this class in order to barely pass exams. Lectures are just the online homework illegibly scribbled on the board. Just a lazy professor who doesn't enjoy teaching. Exams reflect old exams. A waste of time and money choose another professor. Very disappointed but passed the class.
3 exams are worth 80% of grade. exams consisted of computing probability, free response, essay. must pass one exam with 70%. endless mastering genetics hw. save your money and take with someone else. hard grader . no one got an A in fall '16 class. majority in D-F range. pop quiz 2-3 ques ea only 60-120sec to solve new material presented that day.
he has high expectations for his students. he will lecture on and write everything you need to know down on the board, but its up to you to go to SI sessions and really learn to apply the information. I appreciate his willingness to make sure you understand the material. the material is hard overall and the class is pretty overwhelming.
I felt this class was more of a training session to learn how to take his tests vs actually truly learning the material. During Si sessions, we would recieve identical worksheets to past questions he had given on exams. I struggled with this immensely and did not learn anything basically. Also his handwritten notes on the board were frustrating.
2 exams and a final are only grades. Definitely no hand holding. Hard grader, gives awful feedback. Will go so far as to make fun of you if you ask "the wrong" questions. Gives no indication what concepts will appear on exams. Sort of a rude guy and I wouldn't recommend you take this course with him unless you're very confident you know the subject
I have previously taken genetics with another professor and did not pass. He gives you the previous semesters exams which are a lifesaver. Go to SI and stay on top of the material and you will be okay. There arent many professor choices for genetics, but I would highly recommend Gilg. Taking the class in the summer also helped ALOT!
He is probably the rudest person i have ever me tin my life!! We had a student in our class that seemed to have a learning disability and he would pick on him in front of 200 people. Tests are pretty difficult but if you read the book you can pass with a B.
I beg you. Please do not take his class. This class is a serious liability for your health, meaning I wanted to take a long walk off a short pier at least three times a week. Arrogant, rude, and spiteful would be a glowing review of his personality. Save yourself!!!!
Interestingly, I can't provide him with an ISQ rating, so I will have to say it here: worst professor I've had so far. Don't take this course unless you ABSOLUTELY have to. 3 exams worth 80% and 3 hw worth 20%. Talks SO much and is SO boring on top of him being uncaring and kinda rude. Save yourself the stress and find another upper bio elective!
Must get a C or higher on 1 of 3 exams or automatic fail (both Genetics & Evolution). Assigns homework problems that have completely irrelevant information for exam, then marks answers wrong on exam for using irrelevant information. Is very friendly and communicative over email but will make you feel stupid if you go to office hours for help.
Guys, if you value yourself, take this class alone. This is by far the most stressful class I have ever taken. If you have a life outside of school, no you do not. This should be your focus and only this.
I think Matt Gilg should be required for all my fellow millenials and zenials. I had Evo & Gen. Life is suffering and he teaches the fundamentals of life, biology of course! Look, if you haven't had much adversity your gonna suck at science, by being overconfident or a fraud. Take the bitter pill that is Gilg and learn more than just ATC & G!
If you are thinking of taking genetics with gilg, GOOD LUCK. He is by far the worst professor I have ever had in my four years of college. Not only is he very unreasonable, a tough grader, and slightly inappropriate in lectures but I have never met a teacher who is so unsupportive and has absolutely no faith in his students. You will regret it.
Don't believe a review above 3 because he is the type of guy that will fake his rating to make himself feel better. Very condescending person that requires you to understand what he says and not the textbook.
In my 4years of collage this was the only prof that actually explained the material well. He writes everything you need to know on the board. The only things you are graded on are 3 tests and mastering homework. Don't waste a lot of time on homework as it is not representative of the test material. GO TO SI. Tests are exact replica of SI.
We all know Genetics is one of the hardest classes in the biology department. If you can, take this class with other classes that are less demanding. The material is extensive and the professor writes everything on the board. The amount of lectures is ginormous but expected. It is the origin of life and other genetic processes. Go to SI.
This is my second time taking professor Gilg with the same repeated grade. There are a total of three tests worth 75% of your overall grade, so if you do bad on one there is not much hope to do well overall. Very frustrating and I can definitely say if you can take genetics somewhere else, do not hesitate to do so!
Don't take him if you have another option. His lectures were interesting and the homework was fine. HOWEVER, he doesn't post accurate grades/weights on canvas until the end and the exams are incredibly difficult and worth majority of the grade. Says if you manage to get a C overall but don't get a C on one of the exams he'll give you a D. Rude guy.
Dr. Gilg is extremely smart and hilarious; He is an acquired taste though. His genetics course is exam heavy with three exams that total 75% of your grade. There are roughly five online homework assignments that take a few hours each; The homework totals 15% of your grade. You must practice, practice, practice! He is difficult but great!
If you want to learn the basics of Genetics take this professor. One of the best professors of Genetics i ever had. He has his character which sometimes can be a little too sarcastic, but he is a good guy and want you to use your logic instead of memorization. Study the notes. The book is only for quizzes and homeworks.
For starters, he claims we should not memorize yet expects us to memorize processes. His exams are 15 pages (sometimes more) and expects us to spend 1 min per question. Each question consists of 3-4 parts (a-d). His cumulative final exam is nearly impossible. Please stay away from taking this Professor. Your GPA will thank you for it.
Good Lecturer, but not very approachable or understanding. Can be condescending at times. Has high expectations for his students, which is both good and bad. His tests are very difficult, lots of writing on the exams and very few homework assignments. No extra credit.
In all of his classes he has a 50% failure rate and is really tough to talk to in office hours
85% of the class is graded on three exams while 15% is a combination of homework and attendance for TopHat quizzes. Tests have extra credit though. Also if your classroom isn't an amphitheater, try to find to find a good seat to see the board. He writes a lot on the chalkboard, and his handwriting lowkey limited how much I wrote for notes.
Spent countless hours studying for this class and was barely able to pass with a C-. Many of the students in his class are retaking genetics for a 2nd time and test averages were still in the 60s. Condescending professor who's not very approachable either. Seems to enjoy stomping on students dreams of becoming a bio major/going to med school.
