Took this class before with different prof and dropped it. But Mr. Howell was awesome. He was the best teacher I've had. I loved his class and I will miss going to it in the future. He teaches with real emotion and gets you to think a lot about things you normally wouldn't. A+

Dont expect to pass if you are missing one journal entry, one essay, etc. If you miss a day, talk to him and catch up. He answers his emails quickly if you need help, info, etc. He wont pass you if you are missing one assignment. Only ways you could fail his class is if you never show up or if you are missing an assignment. Easy class :)

Matt makes you joirnal a lot and asks so many questions for you to write about that your head might just hurt. But the way he teaches will honestly make you think different about English and life. He is always enthusiastic and helpful and his classes go by very quickly. Awesome class to take :).

I loved Mr. Howells class! It is the most unique English class you canl take and I highly recommend him. He has a way of getting you to think about things and write about subjects most teachers dont usually discuss. I couldnt recommend him more and sad he doesnt teach anything else I need to take for my major.

Mr. Howell is so sarcastic and you cant have thin skin, but he is an awesome awesome awesome professor. He made us laugh a lot and I felt I became a much better essay writer after having him.

Took me few weeks to get his style as a teacher but once I did I loved going to his class. Interesting, funny, cute guy. Made me think and talk more than Ive had to in other classes but it was cool. You journal a lot.

Mr. Howell is the reason Im going to become an English teacher. He inspired me to the point Im changing my major to education so that I can make a difference. I feel truly lucky to have had him for two classes and couldnt recommend him more. Simply the best.

He was a great profesor . There is no test for a mid term or final ! Makes you do a memoir that I very much enjoyed doing. Over all a great and funny person. There is honestly no way to fail his class unless you dont show up . He does not like absence .

I loved Prof Matt. His method is unique and he really cares about absences and participation. He is super interesting and I enjoyed his lectures and sense of humor. He is VERY opinionated about life but he allows you to have your say to. It was a cool class and he is a super memorable human being.

Matt really gives you 100 chances to pass. He is understanding if you have something going on in life and need help or whatnot. You just have to show up and participate. He teaches through asking questions and it made me think a lot about who I am. Cool unique professor

Mr. Howell was one of the best teachers that I have had in a while! The class consists of a lot of journaling and 4 essays. Essays were easy and enjoyable! He gave us the chance to pick what we wanted to write about as long as it fit the guidelines. He takes the time to get to know his students which was nice. Take him if you get the chance!

Professor Howell isnt overly hard, but not overly easy either. Kinda hard to explain. You have to show up. But showing up is fine. He makes class interesting and fun when he can. I learned a lot about my own writing style and how to write with more emotion. I recommend him to anyone as long as you normally go to class.

Im a good writer and always skated through my essays before having Matt. His essays werent overly hard or anything, but he challenged me to grow as a writer and to stop and think about my word choices and the meaning of what I was writing. That has helped me a lot with my writing and Im glad he was my professor. Really glad.

I attended Matt for English 100 my previous semester, and by far he has been the most fascinating professor I have ever had. Even though his class was long, the interactions in his class made time fly by fast.

Matt taught me a lot bout myself and my writing. The journals were my favorite part and the discussions were always interesting. Matt is an enthusiastic professor.

Matt really cares about teaching and will most definitely push you to write the best you can. If you dont show up and/or dont finish any of the four papers he assigns YOU WILL NOT PASS. Hes a very passionate lecturer and you can tell he is a teacher because he enjoys it and its not drudgery work for him. 10/10 would recommend having.

Prof Matthew Howell was a caring person in my life. He helped me when I was applying for jobs and scholarships. Always agreeing to write the recommendations without hesitating.

Give him time, then you'll find out why many of his students rate him as 5. The writing assignments he gives are enjoyable to compose, and allowed me to reflect on things I never have in writing before. He encourages participation, creating a comfortable learning atmosphere. The only thing I was disappointed about was that he wasn't teaching 102..

I took this class my first semester of college & I have to say he is such a wonderful teacher. You can really tell that he loves teaching and English literature. His class is quite easy, but getting an A isn't easy, you have to put in the effort to really reach for an A. Mandatory attendance, doesn't use textbooks, overall a really cool guy.

I had Matt years ago and truthfully didnt appreciate his class as much as I could have because I thought all college classes would be taught the same way. But they arent at all. I wish I could go back and take the class at this point in life and really appreciate it for what it is. Amazing professor and encourage you to appreciate it.

Matt is easily one of my favorite professors at CSN. I was scared at first because of the previous ratings on here but ended up LOVING his class. He loves what he does and you can see it at every one of his lectures. I came in hating writing to actually enjoying it. As long as you work hard and believe in yourself, you'll excel in his class.

Professor Howell is a gem, he encourages his students to think about many topics and to enjoy writing. I have never written an 8-page research paper before but he made the process seem quick and painless. I was a bit skeptical reading the reviews at first but after taking his class I can see why his students rated him so highly.

Matt is outstanding. He is very understanding and gave extra time on assignments because of lockdown. I enjoyed the readings and the assignments were interesting to write. Great class to have first year.

He is awesome! His classes are totally different from any other English class I've had taken before (for good). I strongly recommend this professor, especially if English isn't your native language.

I imangined that starting off my first year of college it would be diificult but Matt did an awesome job teaching his class. You do a journal every class and discuss the questions asked. He assigns three essays which are pretty interesting and you get assigned small assignments in between. Very understanding and straightforward class.

Had Professor Howell 3 yrs ago. First class I had. He was so POSITIVE to me and encouraging when wanted to quit cause English isnt first. Still dont love English but loved him. And better writer. Very patient and fair.

This is hands down the best English teacher I ever had. Professor Howell is always there to help, the daily journals are super fun to do. Additionally, he gives detailed feedback on the final essay. (I've took Eng102 before, the first teacher was horrible the teacher would make us talk about pop culture and nothing else.)

At first I was extremely intimidated by Professor Howell it seemed like his class was going to be tough, but it was the complete opposite. He gives you great feedback on how to better your work. He's well spoken and has the best interest for his students. Amazing professor! I wish I had him for all my english classes.

Professor Howell is one of the hottest professors ever along with having the coolest accent, but who cares about that. Let's be serious - you won't ever regret taking ENG101 with him. You don't need any books, but your attendance matters. You do need to put in some effort to pass. If you are too shy, lazy, or sensitive, don't pick this professor.

He is patient with questions and explaining how to set your paper up. Also spends time on making sure you understand citations and MLA. Actually liked writing more after his class. Appreciated way he took time to explain things and what was expected. No surprises because very clear.

Ive had nicer professors than Matt at CSN because he can be very blunt about writing abilities. Ive also had much easier professors than Matt because they have checked out already. But Ive never had a better professor than Matt in my life. Ever. My classmates and I would go out to eat after class and discuss his prompts. Awesome teacher. end.

Professor Howell was great to have online even though he normally teaches in person. His directions are very detailed and he will ask you literally 100X if you understand them and have qs. He loves to talk about writing and makes it easy to enjoy the class.

Im someone who asks a lot of questions about assignments and grading and I can honestly say Matt never shortened his answers or told me to look at the rubric. Matt always answered and encouraged me to ask more questions about the assignments. I had been out of school for a long time and Matt was the perfect professor for me as I needed lots help.

Professor Howell cares more about his classes than my others. Wish I could take him for more classes. Awesome.

Professor Matthew. Where do I start. He is blunt. So so blunt. He told me my writing was lazy. But he also gave me a lot of ways to improve it. I wanted to quit his class several times but stuck with it to prove to him my writing could be good and I grew to love his class. Mostly how he teaches and explains writing and life. Show up. Participate!

Probably one of the best professors Ive ever had. He cares deeply about his teaching and enjoys enhancing all of his students writing skills. Hes got a great sense of humor and is extremely passionate during his lectures. I recommend him to everyone who needs English 101. He made the college experience for English so worth it!

I can honestly say he was my favorite prof at UNLV. His personality is unique and just give it time and will grow on you. My only complaint if you will is that he makes all students talk in class and well its and English class not a comm class. But that just is how it goes. Awesome professor and writing will become more easier and understandable.

Matt is a helpful person and really a patient person with questions. He wrote a lot of feedback and when I asked for clarification on an assignment he wrote back several examples and then followed up the next class to make sure I got it. Overall I can only say that I loved his class and wish him the best.

Took his English 101 class over summer 2023. 3 papers 1 short presentation 1 group assignment. Daily journals worth majority of grade. Participation and attendance matter. He makes you feel comfortable with writing and gives great feedback you can tell he cares.

Hadnt been in the classroom for many many yrs and Matt was just the right one for me. I asked him a 100 questions and he was funny and sweet when answering all of them.He even typed up a bunch of examples to give me for xtra help. Loved his class and loved him.Great experience with writing

Matt is really organized, happy and funny. His readings are pretty boring to me. But he is not boring. You must show up and talk and do the readings that he gives. CSN has a lot of solid teachers and Matt is one of them.

by far the best english teacher ive had in my life! attendance is apart of grade so show up (it was a class i always looked forward to going to anyways.) took the black authors class and it was amazing. take this class you will absolutely love it!!!

He is great but he is more to me because I tried quitting his class 3 times because of lack of self belief. He emailed me each time and told me about times he had struggled with the same issue and asked me not to give up on myself and class. I end up finishing that class and taking one more with him. He helped me believe in my writing and in myself

Summer class that was great. Matt is the best for explaining things and is fun to listen to lecture. The research part isn't that much fun but the other stuff is awesome.

I would say take this class if you love literature like he does. I find literature to be mid so it was it alot of work for something I don't love. He is professional and respectful and does allow you to tell him what you don't like about the literature without taking it personally. The groupwork is fun and made several friends in the class.

The Professor is very passionate when it comes to literature. Class is for the most part is not boring. He does have the class read out loud, don't worry it is not mandatory but to him participation is everything. I hate English class but he changed that for me. If he teaches English 102 I will take that with him also.

Matt was intimidating at first but is really a very nice guy and helpful 2. I found my love for writing again in his class and I'll miss his class. He does require a lot of participation which I hated at first but you will get used to it. I ended up talking a lot and he is great at getting people to talk. I loved having him for my summer semester. He loves what he does and inspires others to do the same. Participation matters, but you get used to it quickly. Very glad to have taken his class. 

The best English class I have ever had. I learned so much and I loved writing. Very detailed directions and comments about my work. Always available if you have questions. We used a book of poems for our journals, which was $15 on amazon. 8 week, 7 journals, 2 papers, 11 other assignments. As long as you care and make efforts, you will pass!

Dr. Howell was a good guy to me. Told him on first day that I was shy and didn't like group work because hard to make friends in class. He told me he would take care of it and he never said anything about it again but always made sure I had partners and involved. Appreciate that guy so much.

Matt Howell was easily one of my favorite instructors I have ever had. I have high expectations for future professors and hope they are all like him. Attendance is mandatory, but class goes by so fast and I have never been counting the minutes left of class. His assignments are pretty easy if you follow the guidelines and he gives goos feedback.

Gotta keep it 100 didn't like his class for couple of months. He is very strict about his classroom and told me to take my earbuds out during class or leave. Not liking that. Somehow ended up my best class of that semester. He is a great prof at teaching how to write and how to put together a research paper that makes sense but strict about things.

Matt's ENG102 is a must-take. Engaging lectures, helpful feedback, and a clear system. Acing the class is doable with the textbook, participation, and tools like unstuck AI for study prep. Highly recommended!

He is fast with grading and emails but very picky with papers. He takes off for your paper not being mla rules. I did learn MLA because of him but he is very picky with it. I liked that he spent a lot of time with finding library sources. I'd recommend his class because I became better at essays but do you have to care about page numbers!!!!! No

Matt is extremely blunt, smart and straight to the point and also low-key funny. His poetry memorization in lecture gives me goosebumps because of how much love he has. I think he grades hard for the course but that is just me. Would recommend of course

Reading these not sure what to add other than saying I've never met another human like Matt. The way he talks and thinks about people, the world generally and literature. It's very different and was new to me. I still talk to my husband about his writing prompts. I can say I had only good experiences at CSN, and he changed my life greatly. TY.

Do you hate literature classes? Take this professor. His class is easy and makes literature super accessible. All the readings are done during class and they aren't ever very long, maybe a couple of pages. It's a fun class but you can tell he kinda dumbs it down for those who don't read well. Not a lot writing either for an English class

Prof Howell is an excellent communicator regarding his expectations. The criteria for the class are clear, and he truly cares for his students. Feedback and email replies are ordinarily fast. I learned more here than I did throughout my whole educational experience. There may be a lot of reading, but it's easy work I still reference his material.

I just had Dr. Howell for an 8 week class and it was very good. The thing he does best is explain how to write in a way that makes sense. I always struggled with my writing and he is the first teacher that I understood. I drove him crazy with email questions but he always answered them and didn't act annoyed with me. I feel like my writing is solid

I took Matt for Eng 232. It's an awesome class with a poetry theme. We do alot of journaling and class discussion which is apart of your grade. So if you not a person that like to talk to others this isnt your class. Attendance is also a grade. I would take 5 more times. You only need a $20 book too.He really cares.

His superpower if that's the right word is that he knows how to make you feel like your writing is worth something. I'm a good writer but before his class always struggled with self doubt and stuff. He encourages you and I would suggest if you like to write but struggle with self belief to take his class. His textbook costs 10.00 on amazon.

This professor is super blunt about your writing, maybe 2 blunt. He gives lots of feedback on how you can improve through a letter he writes every student. He is available for help and if you ask him to explain citations he can do it easily. Matt is an awesome speaker or lecturer but very blunt about writing and effort.

I had the joy of having Matt for 101 and 102. He's the best professor I have ever had. He is so passionate about English and teaching, and his energy makes me excited to come to class. He encourages meaningful discussions and his thoughtful and detailed feedback has helped me grow so much as a student. I am going to miss him next semester :(

I had the privilege of being in Matt's class for two courses, and throughout that time, he always took the time to ask about my kids and family. His genuine interest made me feel truly seen, not just a student. His classroom is welcoming and inclusive, and that's a reflection of who he is--a deeply caring and compassionate professor. CSN has super great English profs. I've had 3 and all caring. My boyfriend told me to take Matt's 102 because he loved Matt. The class was my favorite in college. His feedback is above and the class just works as a friendly, fun, excited atmosphere. The only negative is that Matt teaches at odd hours and some of us had to wait couple hrs btwn class

Was in his class many years ago at UNLV and he was the reason I became a science teacher. I for sure do not teach the way he did because that wouldn't work for my personality. I did want to teach because of him. I've reached out to tell him thanks to no success. But wanted to leave my thanks. Best teacher I ever had and it set my life in motion.

Dr. Howell gives a lot of feedback about your writing. His feedback style can only be described as blunt. But if you ask him to explain it, he is actually a super nice guy. The written form is kind of harsh but when he helps you with it in person he is very nice. Learned a lot from him about my writing.

I am proud of myself for never missing a class this summer. Yay me cause it was so hot! Dr. Howell is very heavy in poetry and is extremely specific about APA and MLA and really everything. I got the most out of his feedback about my writing. He also had a guest poet come to our class and she was awesome. It was all good and I liked it.

Excellent college professor and gentleman. Amazing insight into students and ideas.

If there is a more unique human I haven't met them. Our class had a lot of military students and I liked how respectful he was with them. He is respectful with everyone but I noticed with them for sure. Dr. H is blunt, demanding and somehow incredibly sweet person. I learned a lot about my writing and abilities I didnt know I had.

This professor was very clear while introducing our new topic and would make sure we are all on the same page.

Dr. Howell's class changed my life. Full stop. Can't recommend his literature classes enough.

This professor is lowkey sweet and kind. His class takes a minute to get but once you you do u get his method. I can say that he was very kind to me and encouraged me to write more. Matt is always happy and very present and grades quickly with a lot of feedback about ways to get better. He does run his classes long but you can just leave if late.

I would definitely recommend him, he genuinely cares and puts passion into what he teaches. Everyone cares about the grade at the end of the day of course, but he has a lot of heart within his classes. On a different note, attendance and participation are graded. Honestly, just participate, attend, and do the easy work to get the grade you desire.

I have only great stuff to say about this professor, he grades reasonably, opens up the class, creates great discussions and overall a very interesting lecture.
