Biased, self-important, naive and very wrong teacher.
Matt is the coolest English professor at CBC, he's very clear in his teaching, a enjoyable teaching style, and adds a great sense of humor to the class.
Matt's classes aren't a cake walk, but he's a great teacher. He is very clear and very open to discussing all topics. He is funny and respectful. He does a good job presenting the material and helping the students clear up any questions.
Absolutely outstanding. I've since acquired my bachelor of arts and am headed off to graduate school, yet I have not encountered a better prof. He's fair, reasonable, open to criticism, and will improve your writing if you let him.
Mr. Mat is hilarious. I recommend him only to those who will work hard. If you don't you will fail. He is a really great guy if you take him seriously you will do fine. Don't get on his bad side or...ouch! He is really humorous. t'care
Matt is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He expects a lot but he makes you want to give it. If you're up for a challenge and lots of laughs, take Matt Mathesius!!!!!!
Intelligent & insightful discussions encouraged. If Running Start expect to work hard to prove yourself. Sometimes likes to toot his own horn (uses broad vocabulary for its own sake). Open minded at times but still leftist... conserv- atives: shhhhhh!!
I wouldn't go here.
Matt is one of the most dedicated teachers at CBC. He presents you with ideas that cause you to question what you think you knew. That's what college is about, right? He also cracks me up every week. You'll think for yourself when the class is over.
Very friendly and helpful
one of my favorite teachers at cbc. hilarious. but will definitely shred you if you get on his bad side. though hes awesome if he likes you....
I had Matt for Eng 201 as a running start student. He is hard, but it is well worth it. I reccomend his class for anyone taking english. You will get so much out of it! I wish I had taken him for Eng 101 also.
Mathesius was one of the most Badass teacher's I've had. Encouraging, Insightful, Helpful he's a great teacher. I learned a lot in that class.
Awesome class with awesome teacher.
Kick Ass Prof. Kick Ass Soccer Coach...
One of my fav. teachers at CBC. He does tend to use large words which can be a bit hard to follow for some...but he's one of those teachers that actually teaches something and you are able to come out of the class with more.
wow, he is SO HOT!!! I took the Cinema class from him, great learning experience in cinema that I never considered before. We watched a lot of movies that I probably would never have watched, and some I own now. Great class.
Great guy and fun class but he has very high standards for your work.
Beware of Bad Shirt Week. Otherwise: not the worst teacher I've had, but not the most professional. He is given to playing favorites and it affects the way he grades.

Fair teacher. Gives the grade that is deserved.
Learned SO much from him in this course and felt like he challenged us every step of the way ... Would highly recommend to any serious student!!!
Empty reviews like "naive and very wrong teacher" are exactly what Matthesius is working against. Deep analysis and thought are heavily stressed. Hilariously entertaining, and intellectually rewarding. A rare instructor for CBC
Mathesius is pretty damn awesome. Let's be honest.
I like Matt as a teacher so much, that I plan to take him in my future classes. He is AWSOME!
Again, one of the finest educators out there people. Taking this film class changed my viewpoint on cinema as art. Yet another life-canging class by Matt.
The best teacher, period. Passionate about what he does, and class is NEVER, EVER boring. He does have high standards for your work, but at least you actually learn something.
Okay, so I still like Hollywood films. But he showed us Herzog and others I would have never known of. We read some great literature, too: Denis Johnson and a graphic novel. Cool and challenging. Nice shoes!

Hard but a great teacher.
I liked him as a person. But I don't know if I learned anything. He did teach, he made a lot of sense. I guess I had just learned it all in high school and middle school, that it was mostly review. On papers show both sides, PICK A SIDE, and follow all the writing rules. You should do fine in his class. I didn't pick a side. Got a C.
Took this class online and was at first really intimidated. I ended up really liking the class, espeically Matt, and did well in the class. I sort of wished i had taken the class on campus because i think he would have been a really fun and great teacher.
Awesome instructor. Highly Recommended
oh man, matt is awesome! my aunt recommended i take a class of his, and even though the class was hard i'm so glad i took it. he's the kind of teacher who tells you flat out "this class is gonna be hard. if you wanna BS me i'll give you a BS grade." he's also really passionate in this class. you can tell he really enjoys it.
good class. he has a great radio voice!
I liked this guy. His class was challenging, but he cut me a lot of slack on my essay writing skills. The first draft of my first essay probably made him cringe, but with some gentle prodding from him, I whipped it into shape, and the rest were much better. (Distance learning class)
Matt is an awesome teacher! I would highly recomment him. I learned so much from his class he makes the class fun and at the same time you learn. He is so down to earth it makes the class relaxing it feels like you can do and learn without stressing out.
nice guy but has to high opinion of himself. class was boring, more about the matt show than learning something useful.
This guy did for me what my ENG 101 teacher should have. I owe this guy. Even though I didn't like the subject matter, he taught me how to dig deep and really analyze the material. I am a better student because of him.
Challenging, smart, open-minded dude. Teaches what you need to know for the next level. If you intend to go to a four year school, this man will get you prepared. I did not like him at first but learned to respect his style.
Interesting, challenging, teaches you something new every day. Best prof I've ever had. Definitely recommend him!
coolest teacher every. made me laugh every day in class. definately knows what he is talking about and i was able to learn a ton from his class!
Best teacher ever. Every day I laugh hysterically at something he says or does. His humor is definitely crude at times, but hysterical nonetheless. If you come to class and do the work, you will be fine. He is extremely helpful and I have learned so much from him.
He's a nice guy who cares about his students. He has a dark sense of humor that I wasn't exactly used to but he put me out of my comfort zone which I appreciated. He expands you're world in literature and the cinema. I heart CHN's haha
Complete A-hole! He never gives leanency and does not care if you fail or not...if you are not doing well in the first week he encourages you to drop the class!
Awesome professor, he cares about your success and works with you but only if you really do the work. He is not for slackers or crybabys.
awesome teacher!
Matt is the best teacher ive ever had. ive learned so much from him and its actually fun doing the work for a slacker like me. i highly recommend him to everyone. he has a straight forward sence of humor but hes cool. hes the best!!
I took his online class, and before you do this, TRY if at all possible to take him in person. He's extremely down to earth and cool. His online class is somewhat harder than other online classes that you might take, so be prepared. He expects you to work in this class.
Professor Mathesius is a great professor and teaches very well. He is hard but if you are there everyday and do what needs to be done you won't have any problems. He doesn't like slackers and will front you out if you are one so if you are looking for an easy class, then don't even bother with his class.
I thought that the cinema english class would be easy but that wasn't the case at all. he liked to show really dark depressing movies but i loved his teaching style. very upfront but i wrote more essays in there then in my eng 101 class. he said no EC but he did give some out. he is sarcastic, funny, and pretty good looking which was a plus.
He is pretty hot. A good teacher as well. Quiet hilarious and bold.
Wow! I worked hard and got a good grade, amd he got me ready for the next level of writing. Plus he's really good lookin and made class fun!
I have not been to school for 20 years and this professor was just extraordinary! Matt truly cares for his students. Thank you so much for all your help Mr. Mathesius. When your reading this posting your a lucky student because this is a great teacher..
One of my favorite teachers of all time! He also teaches a great cinema class. You know right off the bat he enjoys teaching. He's funny, helpful, and challenges his students, who he really cares about. One thing: I DO NOT advise taking his class if you think you'll cruise the class. You'll be crushed. If your agenda is to learn, you truly will.
He was tough, but he made me enjoy my English classes! I took three classes from him and enjoyed every single one. Don't take an online class from him, though!
His cinema class is not life changing in the least bit, you watch movies and write papers about them(which he grades very critically). Its not like you're learning anything useful unless you want to be a movie critic. Matt is full of himself too, thinking he's so cool because he shows rated R movies.
Matt is a very clear professor and lets you know what to do to earn a good grade. I wrote more in the cinema class than I did in both my English classes. He always got our essays back to us before we had to turn others in so we could improve our writing. Fun class, but you have to work.
Your writing will improve if you put work into the papers. If you aren't interested in film already, you will be after the class and will pretend to be a film snob in front of your friends. He is very approachable although I think he makes a lot of people nervous by looking too much like Jack White ;) Also he picks the best readings to do for Lit.
I don't recommend him. Yes, he is knowledgable and knows much about film guidelines and the good basic information about that, but I couldn't focus past the crude humor and constant cussing. The films we had watched were dark and full of language and unrepeatable material, usually i'm very tolerant but it was way too much, not professional at all.
His film class was very enjoyable. Don't expect to watch Hollywood blockbusters, thats not his style. We watched many interesting films and the essays were graded fairly averagely. Not too picky and not too lenient. Teacher is well knowledged and if you're interested at all in films he'll provide interesting conversations.
This class was excellent. Matt is very intelligent, articulate and witty. Class discussions were very thought provoking. As others have said, this is a class to take if you are interested in learning about cinema but not if you're looking for an easy A.
Love this professor! He's awesome and not to mention cute. You actually learn in his class as well.
I would not recommend taking Matt's ENG111 online class. It was a bad experience. He lacks etiquett and needs improvement on his teaching skills. He plays mind games with students by not supplying an actual answer to a question. Asking this teacher for help will only get you a responce of "figure it out on your own" which was not helpful.
I would highly recommend Matt! My personality worked very well with how he taught, I did not feel like I was in a classroom with strangers, I felt like I was hanging out with my friends. His teaching skills were very good, he makes you learn the stuff yourself, but he gives you the guidance you need to pass!
If there's any other teacher to take for an Eng class, I'd advise you to take the other teacher. This class wasn't only disappointing but discouraging. When he says he's teaching an "introductory class", ya think again. Your profession better be an Eng/Lit major and you better already be a full fledged writer! Horrible experience.
Matt is such an awesome motivator and you can tell he enjoys his job! I recommend ACTUALLY using the book if you're stuck on commas, fragments, etc. Overall, this was a fantastic first quarter at CBC and Matt is totally to blame!! Make sure to bring your sense of humor with you. :)
Matt's class was tough at first because I had to catch up on things I didnt learn from my English 101 class. But he is clear and interesting and a fair grader. I recommend him but you need to be serious about school or you will get crushed
Teach suggests not to take him online. He says that he is a really hard grader. Take him on campus! And he looks a lot like Jack White. I love this class. Running start student, first year. Its really not that hard, if you speak proper English. He clarifies constantly for the people that don't understand. He curses, but its so funny!
Best English teacher in the galaxy!!!
Great teacher. Crystal clear and helps you if you have questions.
I would definitely recommend taking his class. As long as you are willing to work hard and ask questions you should do well. Slackers NOT recommend to take his class. He is super funny and makes you think about things. Probably the best professor I've had thus far.
Took english lit. Most of your grade comes from three essays. Let's you email him practice paragraphs and your thesis for the essays for feedback. He'll help with anything needed. He does expect thorough and well thought out work. Always good feedback on returned assignments. Besides that weekly quizzes that are usually fairly easy.
He is the most ridiculous grader ever! but you wont leave his class less intelligent. he has a ton of assignments that require you to do work. welcome to college. don't talk back you'll just embarrass yourself. put in the work and it will show in your grade. if you are expecting an easy A take someone else.
It's definitely a class that gets you involved with the material.
I took intro to Lit with him online. Hardest class ever, and toughest grader I've ever had. Gave me a D on a paper I should have had an A on because I missed one tiny detail. Would not recommend anyone to take a class online with him - you have to read like crazy & do long confusing essays, and quizzes are timed and extremely difficult!
Matt is honestly a great professor, he seems to know how to teach very clear and effective. I have taken many classes from him and I can say if you didn't take english 99 from him then you will have a harder time understanding his grading system. Other than that he has improved my writing greatly. BTW- he looks exactly like Jack White, no joke.
He is the most toughest grader I have ever had! His directions are not clear whatsoever. I took him online, he is rude and provides no help. He gives instructions that don't give you any leverage. The quizzes are time, there's a lot of reading and the essays are long and pointless. I would not recommend this class.
Taking this class online was one of the biggest mistakes I've ever made. Never had a problem writing essays for any other class in my life to turn around and get a D on every single one. Grading is super tough, and everything is VERY detail oriented.
I loved taking English 101 with him. he's a great teacher and is very understanding of complicated situations. I was really hoping to be able to take my next English class with him, but sadly i won't be able to. i most definitely recommend him as a teacher. people say he isn't helpful, honestly if you have the guts to ask him, he will help you.
Don't expect to get away with the usual online class effort I should of taken the class in person. Lots and lots of reading and writing. He answers every question really quick and gives tons of feedback but if you can't write a paper your in trouble.
The class is definitely worth taking. Mathesius gives you a template for success but you MUST follow directions and work hard!! He is great about making himself available to answer questions during his office hours. Warning: Come to class prepared or don't come at all... Seriously! You MUST register early too, he's famous and it fills up fast!
A really cool guy and professor. You are in luck if you get into his class. Everyone loves Matt and its for a good reason, he is the one of the best English professors at CBC. I only see people struggling if they use the word irregardless commonly. Weak writers will not survive.
He repeats lectures if he has to so everyone understands and is always willing to help you improve. Hilarious teacher, id totally recommend but do expect homework almost every night. If you didn't finish it, don't even bother coming unless you want to get picked on.
He is clear and helpful. You cant slack off or you will fail. I thought he was strict but fair. No cellphones! He hates technology!
Matt was the first teacher I ever had at CBC and made my first quarter there amazing. I actually looked forward to going to class every day. He is hilarious and makes an effort to make every lecture interesting. The key to doing well in his class? Following his instructions to a T and showing up. Gives great feedback for essays.
He is really good teacher. He explains well. Answer questions. I really recommend him. I wish take him in future again. U need to follow his directions
Holy cow, this class was rather difficult. It is a lot of reading with in-depth analysis. If you do not like analytical essays, beware! There are 3! There were quizzes every week on 20+ pages of reading. They're very hard to do if you didn't read/ take notes. Professor Mathesius was very helpful, and always quickly available for any questions.
Professor Mathesius is the BEST! But he means business, just look at his grading scale. He is extremely patient and if you show effort and make it to class everyday he will work with you. Stay in his class and you will feel accomplished not to mention you will learn a lot!
I love Mr Mathesius!! Extremely comical. He is a harda** who CARES about how well you learn in his class and understand the material. He gives feedback, not only to help understand material but to pass his class in particular. Curses a lot. WILL WORK WITH YOU IF YOU ASK QUESTIONS. Very nice. Kind of looks like a greek god.
Matt is one of the best teachers I've had! He is super funny, and incredibly helpful as long as you ask for it! He makes you work hard. He is super sarcastic and loves to swear! Plus, he's not too bad to look at either.
great guy. super funny and makes a class that should be super boring very interesting and fun. If you are easily bothered or offended dont go to his class, go back home and do nothing. Clear feedback. Do the reading and you will pass. very generous.
I did this class for running start not expecting a heavy load. Everything I've been taught in high school was wrong and he expects it to be his way or the highway. I've honestly learned a lot more than I expected and was given really good feedback on everything even though I still suck at English. Get ready to write and read a lot. Good Luck..
You have to write a lot of essays but its worth it in the end if really put an effort into it.
Matt Mathesius is a hard teacher to take but he really cares that you know the material. If you go to him for help he'll give as much feedback as possible. The quizzes help even out your grade but he expects a lot out of your essays.
Matt is the coolest. He is funny, intelligent and let's you know exactly what he wants. He is a hard ass at the beginning but softens once the dummies leave
Mathesius is great! He is very clear on what he expects for you, and will even lay out the outline for your papers. He is very picky as to how he wants his work turned in, so be sure that you ask many questions! Mathesius will give you multiple work days for each essay, and even has a Q & A day right before the essay is due. Very tough grader!!
I learned a lot from him. He is a strict professor, but he is approachable.
Mr. Mathesius is an awesome professor. I learned a lot from him. It is a hard class but as long as you do what he asks in every essay you'll get a good grade. He is very funny and will help you if you ask for help. If you do the quizzes it will help your grade a lot. I Definitely recommend taking him.
Matt Mathesius is very intense in the first class and tries to scare you into doing well. Pretends to be a spider but is actually a butterfly. He will make you work, hates procrastinating, expects a lot. He is hard, but I feel like hes given me a lot and Im only on the fourth week. He is a good teacher. Dont be scared by his first lecture
Mathesius is hilarious and the best professor I've had at CBC. There is a ton of reading in this class, but if you put in the effort and show up to class every day, you'll be prepared for index card quizzes and for the exams. In my opinion, he does a great job at explaining the stories & putting them into context- I definitely recommend his classes
He is an awesome teacher. He actually gets you to think critically, and view writing or stories from a different point of view. His classes are very engaging. A lot of reading but the reading is interesting and fun.
He's a great teacher! He's very clear on how he wants you to do your work, and gives great feedback.
Intro to Lit - Professor clearly loves the material he teaches, encourages students to use discussion boards to interact as a whole, ask questions and help each other. He will make you work for your grade so be prepared to read the material given a few times over. Make good effort, ask questions, work with classmates, you'll do great.
Matt is very encouraging and wants all his students to learn and pass the class. He teaches you each step and I learned so much from him. He is so funny. Don't take this class if profanity offends you. He is very down to earth. He is very clear on his expectations. Do not be late to class! Excellent teacher!
Mathesius is a great teacher. This was my first class as a college student and hes made me work for my grade while also being encouraging. He gives feedback whenever asked and is very flexible if you do the work and show up to class. You must be willing to do the work!
Matt Mathesius is truly something else. I've never had a more awesome English teacher. He gets right to the point when it comes to what he wants in his essays, and also provides all the time you'll need to complete an essay. He is a procrastination breaker! That's how he designs his class. Abide by his guidelines and you'll be fine.
I've taken three classes with Professor Mathesius. That in itself should say enough. He is a great professor. His classes require that you put your everything into your essays, he can tell when you're not trying. He cares about your success and will work with you if you need help. In total, you'll have three essays in 102.
He's the best one. I'm not a native English, and his lecturing so clear that helps me pass every essay with a high grade. You'll have 3 essays out of class and 1 essay in class. Quiz on Canvas every weekend.
It's a very interesting class and the reading that he selects help to keep the class interesting - I definitely recommend his online class.
He'll seem intimidating at the beginning of the quarter, but I swear he's not as bad as he'll seem. He's a great professor and is incredibly fair.
One of my favorite professors I've ever had. He gives really great feedback that helps you improve. He's super clear about his grading criteria. I would definitely recommend that students take his class.
This guys is OK, but he's too liberal. He grades hard on your essay which is hard to pass. If you want to survive his class visit him, and the tutor center. Other than that don't take him unless you use caution.
Mathesius is an exceptional professor! However, he is tough as nails. He is very particular about how he wants EVERYTHING in his class done. Gives excellent feedback on how to pass. Does not tolerate students that are late or students only putting in half effort to pass. The class is overall pretty tough but he gives clear grading criteria.
Exceptional professor! I took him for all of my English courses, beginning with writing prep 98 up until English 102. He's a tough grader but does not mind explaining topics over and over until understood.
Easily set off, would raise voice at students often. First day of class he told us he expected half of us to drop out due to his high expectations and the difficulty of his class. Needless to say I withdrew a few weeks in. I consider myself fairly good at english and this class was extremely difficult. Took Eng 101 with another prof and got an A.
The syllabus said there would be violence, language, and sex in the readings. There are a lot of all of these, and you must read the selections for the class.
He isn't for the faint of heart, but he is a great professor. Very clear and thorough instructions. I really did enjoy this class, but if English isn't your strong suit or you're a slacker, look elsewhere. He gives great feedback and I'd recommend participating a lot early on so you learn what he wants. Quiz or essay due weekly.
Although I dont agree with most of his methods he explains things well. You will do good if you do the reading but if you dont do the reading then come to class and listen to what others have to say about it. He talks a lot about his views and stances and I didnt think that was necessary. Dont drop out! And ask questions in class.
Literally one of my favorite teachers I have ever had! He is super funny and nice and he wants everyone to do well in his class. His lectures are amazing and super meaningful and it seems like he knows almost anything oh ask him. If you have the opportunity to take on if Matts classes DO IT!!
If you want to be a good writer then I recommend taking Mathesius. If youre expecting to pass with an easy grade then I dont recommend taking him. He does leave a lot of writing assignments and hes a tough grader. I dont think hes nice and he tries to be funny with rude jokes.
One of the best and most hilarious teachers I have ever had. There is a fair amount of reading but it is worth it.
Hes a really funny guy. If youre in a class with a lot of participation then the class is going to be easy. Likes to swear a lot in a humorous way. If you cant handle the real world dont take his class. Although theres readings everyday the stories are good. Doesnt want you to think like him,If you show evidence to support hell understand.
Matt is an amazing professor, he genuinely wants everyone to succeed and if youre in class and you make an effort to understand what hes asking for youll do just fine! Hes also willing to help students outside of class
This is been the worst experience of my Years on this planet
learned more in this class than all of high school
He seems like he dont care about his students. Its spring 2020 and he's been really tough since all classes have been moved online. Im generally a good student but this has brought my confidence down so much and its only the second week
I always looked forward to his class and I know a lot of my friends did too. The readings weren't difficult: just make sure you do them everyday (he'll know if you blow them off). Be thorough and take notes. Exams are easy if you do the readings & engage in discussions. I highly recommend taking his class if you can.
Took his class for English 102. Was helpful with questions but incredibly tough grader. Will fail your essay for one mistake!! Fail an essay fail the class.
Due to Covid this class was sadly online. I appreciate professors like him. You will have to work for a good grade, shocker. Do NOT procrastinate (work ethic is noticed). You WILL have to put forth effort and time. Your grade will reflect this. Makes it very clear on what is expected, if you don't do what's expected you won't pass. Simple as that!
This class drained me. I dropped another class and worked really hard with nothing to show for it. He was a really tough grader, didn't allow diversity of thought, and when I asked what I could do better, he just repeated the instructions multiple times. Maybe it was just because it was online class, but I'm not taking that chance
Mathesius is one of the best professors at CBC. At least in person, don't take him if you get offended easily. He is SO funny though. Do the readings and participate in discussions to pass. He knows if you didn't read the material. Exams are easy if you do the work. Not an easy A, but amazing class. I will be taking him for English 102 soon.
102 online fall 2020. Rough dude. Expects students to understand everything and his feedback is trash. 1 missed assignment and RIP your grade. 3 essays argument, showing that a resource was credible like what? and a inform essay. DO NOT take if you're taking other diffc. classes. idk why he has such high grade. Weekly quizzes mult choice. Bad prof.
Awful at giving feedback. Is very condescending. Constantly says you didnt read my directions even when asking to clarify said directions. When asking for help, is very rude and non helpful. A professors job is to help a student who needs clarification, not to just write them off as automatically lazy and dumb.
This class is difficult to explain. I don't like him as a person: his feedback is surly and meanspirited, but I also learned a lot in this class. If you take this class, please participate in the discussion boards, read every announcement and get things in super early. He sometimes gives extra cred for them. Also, do the practice paragraphs.
Don't skip out on any assignments, he gives valuable feedback on your assignments which help you be successful when your essay rolls around. He seems really tough, but hardwork is recognized. There were 3 essays, multiple choice quizzes, peer reviews, and assignments that were based on your essay. Don't be intimated he is a great professor.
Professor Matt Mathesius teaches research writing with an iron fist. That's my warning to anyone who wants to learn from him. Be ready for hard work and effective, but brutal criticism. You will learn how to write a top quality piece of writing with purpose, but you will have to follow his instructions explicitly. Read ALL of his module pages!
If you are lazy DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! You have to work hard for your grade. He is brutally honest and doesn't sugarcoat anything. Hard work is noticed and appreciated. Don't be lazy or procrastinate on anything! He's a pretty good teacher tbh and will help you become better in your writing. But if writing isn't your strong suit... look out!
I am a 4.0 student and always have been. But this professor is horrible! He grades so harsh and has no heart to help you!
He is the worst teacher Ive had at CBC. If you ask questions he says find them yourself. It is very difficult to understand what exactly he is asking of the assignment, he will say one thing and then another the next minute. If you take this class expect it to be hard and him to not help you if you need help.
I have mixed feelings about Mathesius. Grading is harsh and the feedback is often patronizing. But you simply need to find his standards and meet them. The instructional materials are basic because Mathesius expects traditional papers. If you want a 4.0 in his class, however, know how to write before taking it. Not sure why he's scored so high.
Professor Mathesius isn't an easy teacher. He grades harsh, is honest about your work, and doesn't allow laziness. However, he gives great feedback, notices improvement and effort, and will work with you accordingly. There were many times when he cut me some slack because I was genuinely trying. Don't pick him if you are feeling lazy this quarter.
He once said "You could be drawing a picture of me getting pushed off a cliff, I don't care, just at least pretend you're writing notes" He may seem harsh and mean but he is just upfront about what is wrong Very passionate about writing and will not fail to make you laugh in his class.
Mathesius is a great teacher. His instructions are clear and he gives good feedback. He is a tough grader and expects papers to be written quickly. The quarter is very fast-paced and can be hard to keep up with if you get behind.. so don't! Over-all I learned a lot and would take his class again.
Matt seems challenging at first but once you get used to the class it's not as bad. There were 4 paper we had to write. Good body paragraphs are key to a good great, they have to be 8-10 sentences long. He's quite funny so that makes the class fun better to go to. Papers are quite challenging and are all about phones/social media in some way.
Although attendance is not mandatory, I found myself wanting to go to class every day. He has a great sense of humor and gives out extra credit. But be prepared to put in the work, he is a tough grader and will not put up with anything poorly written, so it is important to not fall behind. Overall, he is easily one of the best professors at CBC.
For an online INTRO to Lit class, Mr. Mathesius was a very difficult teacher. I am baffled by the high ratings. He is a very hard grader & even if you do the work & follow the guidelines, he will still give you a zero if everything is not how he wants it to a T. He sounds very patronizing via messages & keeps track of how long you spend on modules.
Professor Mathesius overall is a slightly patronizing and a straight to the point teacher. If your going to pass this class you will need to ask questions on the reading materials and you won't be able to get away with procrastinating. He provides clear feedback, instructions, and even though he can be harsh, he does see improvement and effort.
This was a very humbling class. I thought I was a decent writer but after getting mediocre grades on my essays I guess I'm not. Keep up with all the discussions. Read EVERYTHING. He's pretty harsh but isn't cruel.
Professor Mathesius's class was one of the harder ones that I've had in my school career but, he was also there every step of the way which made the class way easier. If you have questions he will answer them, he's a great teacher and as long as you're keeping up with work and asking questions about parts of your essay's you'll do great here!
The class grade was primarily based on 4 essays, and two were related to the book we read throughout the quarter. If you keep up with his work and make sure you go to office hours, the class will likely be a breeze for you. His class was also very fun to go to, and he always made it a point to ask him for specific feedback on your essays.
Absolutelty horrible grader, he is way too strict with all of his written assignments. He wants everything to be just like in his head like we can read it. You follow every instruction, it's wrong. Do NOT take this course. Find another teacher.
His class is difficult but if you do the work and take his feedback you'll do just fine. If you're doing what you're supposed to he's really nice and funny. But he doesn't tolerate slacking off. He's probably my favorite teacher out of everyone I've taken classes from at CBC. I took his 101 and 102 classes and he was fabulous.
He is definitely a tough grader but if you do the work and not procrastinate you will get a good grade. In english 101 you need to read one book and 2 essays and 2 in class essays. he is very chill and funny
He expects a lot from students, but always gives really good feedback and answers literally any question anyone might have. He's genuinely hilarious and I actually enjoyed showing up to lectures. Is this an easy class? Not really, but if you want to actually learn how to write a good research paper, I highly recommend him.
great professor!
If you are not willing to read a lot for a course I suggest not taking his class. He often would tell students they were not going to succeed as well, so if you need a supportive professor I recommend not taking his class. It's a lot harder than it should be for an intro to literature class. Overall, not the worse class ever but much harder.
Do NOT take Mathesius online. You will hate him, as I did at first. I gave him another shot in-person and he has quickly become my favorite professor. He's hilarious, fair, and gives good feedback. Do not expect him to be easy, though. You CANNOT slack off in this class. Do not procrastinate, get things done in time, and ATTEND CLASS.
If your one of those people who really love English I recommend this class, but if you are someone who hates reading, writing long essays, and hate showing up to class, please go pick another class, he will literally crush you. Also his use of language is very unprofessional and I think he finds it humorous/amusing.
Mathesius is a tough yet engaging professor. His class is fast-paced, but if you stay on top of the work, you'll learn a lot. Using resources like the textbook, office hours, and study tools like unstuck AI really helps. Overall, a challenging but rewarding experience.
Mathesius can be a tough grader but one of the easiest professors to talk to. He's understanding, kind, and has a hilarious sense of humor! Class is definitely worth it if you're looking to grow and get out of your comfort zone. Participate in class, be sure to ask questions whenever you need clarification and he's more than happy to help.
As a first-year RS student at CBC, I was nervous, but he made me feel welcome. He's super funny and engaging no boring PowerPoints! Instead, he wrote on the board, interacted with us, and made learning fun. He ensures you understand everything for his assignments and provides excellent feedback that helps you improve. Highly recommend!
Real Life Terrance Fletcher Don't expect a chair to get thrown at you however
Overall, he seems to be a professor who cares about his students. His lectures and assignments are pretty straightforward. However, he is a tough grader who offers no extra credit or opportunities to redo assignments.
By far one of the best teachers I have ever had!!! I loved his class,100% would take it again!! Class is easy if you show up and are ready to learn. Matt gives really good feedback and is always there ready and willing to help you and guide you. His lectures are really helpful and easy to understand. He encourages everyone to ask questions.
I took Professor Mathesius for Intro to Literature and he was a great professor in my opinion. He obviously is passionate about his field and his students' success. There was only a quiz a week on the readings with no final/midterms besides a short essay at the end. I would recommend taking him especially if you want an easier course.
He cares deeply about teaching and is so passionate about his subjects. If you ever want an interesting conversation talk to him outside of class. Gives you many opportunities for questions and feedback. You have to work for the grade but as long as you follow his criteria and don't procrastinate there is no way to fail.
His quizzes, a critical factor of your grade in that class, always have these luck based questions. Despite fully understanding the learning material for the week, there's a low chance you'll get higher marks on your quizzes. He claims that participating in discussions help, but most of the topics discussed don't even relate to the quizzes.
He is very difficult and he is a technology hater; almost all of his essay topics were against technology I end up with dropping this class because i was almost failling
He is good if your looking for a professor that will introduce you to the bias of college, he will contradict himself while grading sometimes but you just need to talk to him and explain why his grade isn't correct. He is very good at manipulating situations and class discussions to the point where most people don't notice.
If you're struggling, this professor will be straight up with you. He gives amazing feedback to his discussion questions and you have 1 quiz every week, multiple readings. Some of the readings can be confusing but if you really ask questions or answer his questions in your perspective, he can guide you and correct you if mistaken.
