Bro. Miles is a good teacher. He tries not to give busy work and is willing to help his students.
Sustains, 1) Class is fun 2) There's help outside of class 3) Instills a love for the subject Improves, 1) I-learn material is scattered 2) Hard to follow along in class 3) No tutorial videos in I-learn
He often looks at his students and states "You guys don't love this? This is awesome!" So be ready to have that same spirit. Simply put, if you skip, better check the syllabus first--you *will* miss something and then have to pile through his slides to find his instructions. Get ready to learn how to research. Really opened PolSci for me.
Dr. Miles is, by far, one of the best professors that I've ever had the opportunity to take a college course from. He makes the classroom atmosphere incredibly fun and engaging, while making sure you still learn a ton! He doesn't put much stock in grades, so if you show up and do your best, he'll make sure you're taken care of! Definitely recommend
Brother Miles is am amazing teacher! He is very helpful and knows what he is talking about. There aren't many tests because he really doesn't care about grades, it is more important that you learn.
Brother Miles Is a great teacher! He is really funny and does his best to get students to relax and not worry so much on grades and more on actual learning. His 300 class is hard! But you have to take it to graduate, the tutor is great! He is fair and is always willing to help. Although this class needs a R Studio for dummies book! lol
Brother Miles is a hilarious teacher! He is always willing to help. 300 is a hard class by its self just make sure to stay up on the assignments.
Brother Miles knows his stuff super well. He also doesn't care about grades. So if that's your worry, this class will be a nice breather. He really just wants you to worry about learning the material and nothing else. I wish more teachers were like that.
Great Professor, good class. You really can learn a lot you previously didn't know about the U.S. Presidents and their powers. You get what you put in, lots of reading so bunker down.
Matt Miles is one of my favorite professors. He is super willing to meet with you outside of class and help if you're struggling. If you don't learn and do well in his classes you just aren't trying hard enough. If you want to do well and you are willing to seek help you can. Miles is entertaining and real. I would recommend all his classes.
Brother Miles is the best. I have had him for a couple of classes and he is so helpful and knowledgeable. He is so passionate about the subject matter and it comes through in his lectures and assignments. If you need any help with anything or clarification on anything he is there for you. Everyone needs to take at least one class from him.
Great teacher, very helpful when you have questions on the assignments, or projects. Cares more about the material then grading you harshly. Lectures are incredibly fast and somewhat vague. Homework is tough, but you will learn from the work. Learning R is tough, but worth it.
Brother Miles is a very good teacher and very knowledgeable. I really enjoyed learning in his class. I just wish we would have more time to practice too. I also think that sometimes Brother Miles is not as clear as he could be because he knows the subject and forget that we never heard about Rstudio. Overall, he is an excellent professor
Brother Miles is a very knowledgeable in his subject. I enjoyed learning from him. The only thing that I would say is that sometimes he forgets that we do not know a lot at first about Rstudio. So maybe going a little slower. Overall, Brother Miles is an amazing teacher and very funny too.
This semester was my first time having Brother Miles as a professor. He is super hilarious and sarcastic, which makes class at 8am a lot more bearable. I enjoyed his teaching style and incorporation of multimedia and historical examples in his lectures. It helped to keep my attention in a class that could easily be made really dry.
This is the first time that I've had Bro. Miles. As a senior, I've taken courses from all but one professor in the Poli-Sci department. He is one of the better teachers. I like courses that are highly independent and he provides a class structure to be able to do just that. Class discussions are interesting and humorous. Effective Powerpoints.
Brother Miles is the most interesting teacher i have ever had! He is SO funny! He makes the information really clear and really fun. He also comes up with the most ridiculous opinions that really make you think about the way you view things personally. I probably learned the most from his class because i enjoyed it so much!
Good teach!!
Brother Miles is the man! I have had him for three classes and I have enjoyed them all. He teaches you the things you need to know, but is also way funny. Make sure you take 300 from him, because he teaches you useful skills that can really benefit you in the future. I would recommend that anyone take his classes.
Bro. Miles is a great teacher who is one of the most helpful professors I have had. When you ask him important questions he will respond quickly and will always give good feedback if you ask for it. In his classes you get out of it exactly what you put in. He encourages his students to think for themselves and really prepares them for grad school.
Professor Miles is very down to earth. His class is set up to learn. If you are worried about your grades it means that you are not doing the assignments he assigns. Professor Miles has set the class up for the students to learn as much as they can if the student walks away not understanding anything that is their own fault. He makes you think
Awesome teaching style, he is an expert in his knowledge of the subject yet simplifies it and makes it easy and fun to follow in class. He has a relaxed style and isn't all about doom and gloom like most professors. You can actually talk to him and feel like a human being. He really wants to teach and to share his knowledge, so he actually cares.
When you take a class and you really like your professor, you think he is a great teacher, a fair grader, and you learn a lot, then there is a Bro. Miles class. He expresses a deep understanding and shows great passion in his lecture, then he says " but i don't really care" haha I love it.
Bro. Miles is super funny! Yeah he has a different sense of humor but its hilarious! The debates were a lot of fun except when you are trying to go against what you hardcore believe; then it's harder. Yeah there is a bit of reading but what POLSCI class isn't there?
Bro Miles is AWESOME!!!! He is a great guy and he is always willing to help out! He is so funny and is always cracking jokes!
Hes really fun. Quick, but if you pay attention then you can do everything.
Bro. Miles is very easy going, but highly concerned with what you are able to take away from his class. Homework assignments are very clear and usually do not take a lot of time because he tells you exactly what he wants. Good guy and is always willing to answer your questions.
Brother Miles is one of the only teacher on campus that teaches what's relevant and not traditional. His lectures are not only informative but very easy to follow and listen to. He really knows his stuff and will make you question your own beliefs. Overall he is a great teacher and his class is worth taking.
Brother Miles is one of the only teacher on campus that teaches what's relevant and not traditional. His lectures are not only informative but very easy to follow and listen to. He really knows his stuff and will make you question your own beliefs. Overall he is a great teacher and his class is worth taking. Oh and he is hilarious.
The class itself is fairly easy, especially if you've already taken statistics courses before this one. The only difficulty that I encountered came in the form of the R statistics program that we had to use. There's a huge learning curve to it, and it's not easy to get used to. Other than that, Brother Miles is a good and competent teacher.
Brother Miles is a great teacher, and I enjoyed taking POLSC 300 from him. He will give you as much help as you need, and the homework is reasonable. This is a good course for political science students that want to do statistical research and prepare for graduate school.
Bro. Miles is a funny and cool teacher. He puts his own unique spin on teaching the material but also teaches the general principles and things we should know. Classes are usually funny but don't miss many of them or you will lose half your grade. Course was pretty easy and just had to write 2 page papers every week, read, and debate in class.
Brother Miles is a straight shooter he doesn't over work you but the material is complected. He will say its easy but he is the professor and that's what he does. You don't want to miss his lectures because that's where you will learn the most. Every assignment has a rubric follow that and you will do fine.
Matt Miles is a great professor. His lectures are always super funny! Participation and class attendance are very important, if you skip too many classes your participation grade will suffer. But its worth it to come to class!
Brother Miles is great professor!! Definitely don't skip class, its worth it to come though! He is so funny, and tries to make the lectures not as boring.
Brother Miles is a very straightforward professor. This class was mandatory for Political Science majors, do not take it unless you need to or unless you enjoy statistics and coding.
Brother Miles is very helpful, his grading rubrics are pretty clear as well as what he expects from you out of class. R studio and coding is somewhat difficult, however if you've taken statistics or enjoy it, the course should be fairly simple and enjoyable.
Brother Miles is willing to help you and he makes it so you won't fail if you mess up on one important assignment, but you have to do the work.
This is a hard subject for me. I don't feel that I did that well but that wasn't Brother Miles fault. He is helpful and makes the assignments doable. I do wish the slides were a little bit more helpful. Bu the quizzes are easy and the assignments aren't too bad. Not a lot of tests either which is nice. No huge project that takes the whole semester.
This class is required for Polysci majors. Its mostly learning how to code in a computer program. I like learning the concepts, but using the program kind of went over my head. I wasn't very good at this class but it wasn't Bro. Miles fault. If you work hard in this class, you'll be fine. He makes it doable.
This class is hard for those without any statistic background. Some of classmates were taking this course for the second time. Without asking question, you most likely will got lost. You need to pay attention in class especially to the coding. If you apply yourself, you will be able to understand and learn how to use R-studio. Good for resume's.
This class is difficult for those who don't have any background in statistics. But it's doable. You have to really pay attention in class especially to the R-code. R-studio is the best thing to learn in this class. Being able to know how to use it can really help you in the long run especially if going somewhere statistics are required.
Brother Miles is fantastic. His class is hard, he moves quickly in his demonstrations and you may not have a chance to catch up in class. But he will help you outside of class and his TA is awesome too. Don't fall behind though because this class moves fast and at the end you may not know everything you need to if you fall behind.
Brother Miles is a pro at what he does and what he knows but he also knows it is hard to get a grip on. He is immensely helpful and his TA is excellent. The hardest part of the class is using the program in question (there are lots of small electronic hoops to jump through). Class is divided into more theoretical lectures and practical homework.
Bro. Miles is an awesome professor! He is definitely someone who is willing to help you out when you don't understand a concept and is definitely willing to meet outside of class if you need the help. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who has had a hard time understanding stats! I would also take this class again if I could.
He encourages insightful class discussions and debates in class where we discuss, learn and teach each other. Above all, I attribute my success to him. He has inspired, encouraged and helped me gain confidence and interest to study political science and made my learning experience a really pleasant one. Thanks a lot, Brother Miles!
Brother Miles is awesome. This class is an easy A.. but only if you go to class! Seriously.. don't even think about missing a day because he shows you exactly how to do the homework, and how to pass the exams. He's also hilarious.
I was pretty worried about the material for this class since it has to do with codes and some math. But overall was pretty easy! I have no math background and passed it easily!
Great for learning statistics with R. If you want to learn R basics or other uses then you'll need to do some outside study with datacamp or a coding website like that. He is straight forward and says you what will be on the test and a key thing to remember is that he changes his presentations on the fly so do NOT ever skip class or it's an F.
Nice Enough guy, but he really doesn't care about anything or anyone. He does his own thing.
Brother Miles is one of the funniest professors I have ever taken a class from. He is super laid back, but he always provides all the information you need to be successful. I will definitely be taking more classes from him in the future. He is always willing to help and work with your grades.
His class is awesome, he's super funny and makes the lectures go by a lot easier then other teachers. Attendance isn't mandatory but you might miss a quiz which is a huge portion of your grade. Assignments aren't hard as long as you do them. Would definite take again.
Brother Miles is a fantastic teacher. He gives inspiring lectures every class period. He is also spiritual in his own unique way; his comments make you constructively challenge your own views, which is a good thing. He also believes in his students, and always tries to inspire them to do great things. It is 100% worth taking his classes!
Brother Miles is a good professor and his classes are always interesting. If you like taking classes that don't forcefully try to focus on religion, this is the professor for you. Bear in mind, your grade is really determined by two things, so you really need to do the final project and well on the exam. He is very willing to hear others opinions.
Final Paper and Final Test are majority of your grade when you take this class.
The class is definitely enlightening. He makes you think about your political ideology and your opinions about certain presidents and their policies. He does teach good material even if I do not necessarily agree with all his political views. Very lecture heavy and he doesnt make exceptions. It is not a hard class unless youre a slacker.
Brother Miles is a great teacher. Makes the lectures interesting and keeps the class discussion going with his humor and comments. He does like research papers and that is something you have to put some effort in.
Brother Miles is a solid choice. He really knows his political history. Stay up on the homework and you will do fine. Most of your grade comes from a paper and a final but he gives you all the questions before the final. His lectures are hilarious and he was always willing to clarify questions if I had any. Good guy all around.
In this class, you just need to do the work and everything else will work out.
It was solid class and if you do the work you will do fine
I enjoyed this class. Brother Miles is hilarious, focuses on the important parts of his lectures, and welcomes different points of view. His lessons are fun which makes learning much easier. Prepare to debate and write weekly write-ups. Most of the class grade is based on the final paper and final. I'll be taking one of his classes in the future.
He is hilarious, he teaches well, and knows his subject inside and out. He will tell you on the first day and throughout the semester I don't care what you think, and that's okay. I want you to be able to explain and defend your position. Fun class lots of chances for comments and energetic debating. I definitely would take more classes from him.
Bro. Miles has a likable personality, really knows his stuff, and makes you work for an A. Most students get a B. There's a moderate amount of reading, but it's worth it. My one criticism is sometimes class time is spent mocking uneducated views. Overall good teacher and well structured class. I really enjoyed it and learned a lot.
Brother Miles expectations and criteria are listed clearly in the syllabus. Everything you need to pass is on there.
Brother Miles teaches a solid class. The lectures are informative, and aren't super boring, so that's a plus. You should pass the class, if you do your homework and participate in class. Expect to learn lots of distinct information from a statistical point of view.
As he would say, "I don't care if you don't agree with me." The thing I loved about this class is that you could completely and vocally disagree, and it did not matter. I think that he is good at challenging what you know and getting you to consider other ideas, even if you think they are sometimes conspiracies. Have an opinion is my advice.
Hes a funny and likable guy, but this class is organized terribly. Everyone in the class was constantly confused about what we were even supposed to do on assignments.
Dont worry your good!
Research Methods is a confusing and tough mandatory for Political Science majors. Bro. Miles publicly mocks the challenges students have in class. Privately, he actually is helpful and reassuring, but the public comments make hard for private conversations. Stick with it, work with TA and help labs and you'll come out on top. All endure thru this.
This guy is so funny. the class is not that hard. it seems like nothing makes sense and then after class you fell confident because Bro Miles assures you that you will pass as long as you give even a small amount of effort. This class is so unorganized
Brother Miles is hilarious and teaches with current events. He loves making fun of politicians and destroys all hope in democracy in the nicest way. He is a great teacher and you will never be bored.
So Brother Miles is easily one of the funniest professors I've had. Unfortunately it is also one of the toughest classes I have taken. I read more for this class than I have probably ever read for any class. The books are for the most part really dry and its a little difficult to find main points to prepare for quizzes but use the power points.
Professor Miles speaks with about 50 layers of sarcasm but all with the best intentions. He gives great feedback but you must approach him outside of class. Though superficially he appears very cynical he cares deeply about students' learning. If you have a desire to learn from his classes he will make sure you understand the material. #Notboring.
Professor Miles is really fun. He's very funny and laid back. He loves to joke about politics which makes the topic much more entertaining. But his can be challenging. You need to do as much of the reading as possible otherwise you'll struggle on the on the quizes. You can't make up quizes but he does drop your two lowest scores.
Brother Miles is pretty funny. Expect him to tell you the truth that sometimes nobody really cares. Though at the end of the semester he did let slip, "I do care." - Bro. Matt Miles. I was shocked. But then I realized that he wants you to do well in his class. Beware of reading books, lots of books. But taking POLSC 320 from Bro Miles was worth it.
I learned a ton in this class but there was A LOT of reading, (7 books). He presented the material in a way I had never thought of before. Professor Miles knows his stuff. His dry sense of humor was very funny. I could never tell whether he cared about the things he was talking about or not, but he seems to love his job.
He has a very realistic view on American politics. He truly does not care, about a lot of issues and what people think. But he actually does care. Take his class you will find out. He has lots to read and wants the students to know what they believe. He is very knowledgeable. This class is very good. He only asks that students do their best.
Brother Miles says he doesn't care a lot, and it is true most of the time. He knows the material extremely well, he teaches it well, and he is very willing to help students who need it. Brother MIles actually does care that students learn and he works hard to make that happen. The assignments take a lot of reading, but they aren't too difficult.
Brother Miles was a breath of fresh air. I felt his POLSCI 320 course was organized. There was a lot of reading but it wasn't too crazy and it was pertinent to all of our class lectures and discussions. I appreciate his realistic approach to political parties and special interest group. If my schedule allowed I would take another class from him.
Each week there is a an open book reading quiz on that weeks chapter; the answers on the quizzes do not always match up with the answers in the textbook, but if you email brother miles and explain your answer with evidence he will give you the points. there is also a short essay each week that you will get 100 on if you follow the rubric. fair guy.
Matt Miles is an awesome teacher! He cares very little about how every student does in his class, but if you care about your grades he lets you know what you can do to be successful. He has to be the most humorous teacher I have ever had, I think he should have been a comedian! He can make the dryest topic become super entertaining.
Brother Miles is a kind soul and a good teacher. He acts like he doesn't care but he really does. . . . probably. His classes are organized but not carefree. Try hard and you'll do well.
Has a very simple and straight forward syllabus. Homework was a quiz every week open note and you can work in a group. If you email him concerning a grade or if you feel you weren't graded justly on the quiz he is willing to give you credit as long as you show effort by emailing him about what questions and why you felt you were correct.
Brother Miles is a great professor and easy to learn from. Attendance isn't mandatory but you will definitely learn easier and get better grades from attending class. Plus the lectures are always entertaining. The reading quizzes can be a bit confusing and tough but he is willing to work with you on almost everything. Great professor.
POLSC 150 was a fun class, Professor Miles was a funny guy and made lectures about things that weren't necessarily fun more enjoyable. He is willing to work with you if you miss questions on his weekly quiz which is always nice. He know a lot about foreign politics which made the class good.
If he would be more laid back, he would be horizontal. He is very lenient and but still cares about things probably more than others. His tests are not difficult if you put in the time. He is a fair grader and wants you to succeed, but won't give you what you don't deserve. He is happy to answer questions, in- or outside the classroom. Take him!
He is a hilarious teacher and you can learn a lot from him. Going to class was not mandatory and I learned why because mainly all the work can be done without going to the class. The work is easy enough to where you put forth the effort, you will be fine.
This class was not my favorite because it felt like we did the same thing every class hour. It could have been an interesting class if the information was presented in a different way. And it would help if the professor cared about the material.
I like how he had us write papers. It really helped me learn the material better. I liked how he made class more interesting. He didn't drone on about the material. He made it a fun way for us to learn.
Brother Miles is an excellent teacher. I began this class with very little knowledge about politics but now I have a very strong basic understanding. The textbook chapters were long and the quizzes were time-consuming, but they helped me learn. He is a fair grader and very understanding. I am also grateful for him meeting with me personally.
Brother Miles class consists of amusing lectures and lots of reading outside of class. This semester we read the better part (around 90%) of the 650 pg. textbook. It's not easy to avoid reading, especially since there are specific quiz questions relating to the text, but he will give you points if you can prove your answers are correct.
Hes hilarious and loves what he teaches. Take his classes and you'll have to work a little harder than the average Poli Sci class, but it's worth it and fun. Don't let him scare you either. He likes to hype things up and make you think they'll be more difficult than they really are.
He lectures the first two classes of the week and sends a video to write an essay on for the third (no meeting for the third class). He is very funny, and doesn't care if he's offensive (facts don't care about your feelings). quizzes are very hard as the average grade is around a C. Very cool guy and I am taking a class with him again next semester
Brother Miles teaches the material well and makes class worthwhile. As long as you do the reading and write you essays, you will get a good grade in the class. Brother Miles is ready to help and answers any questions you may have. On quizzes, he is willing to give you credit for an answer you believe is right, as long as you prove your case.
Brother Miles was an awesome teacher. We clearly knows what he is teaching. He doesnt except you to be the smartest person to pass his class, if you do the homework and come to class youll be fine. Id suggest reading the book very well becuase you will be quizzed on it every week. The lectures he does helped me with the papers we had to write.
Look, at the end of the day does your grade really matter? What really matters is the information you manage to soak in and I will be the first one to tell you that this man right here brings the right amount of humor to an otherwise very dry and bland topic.
Great teacher. He's a hilarious guy and he works hard to teach accurate material. I enjoyed this class because I learned so much. He works to be as accurate and unbiased as possible, even though he'll share his funny opinions too. There is a lot of reading, but if you don't like reading, why are you taking a Political Science class?
Brother Miles is one of my favorite teachers on campus. He is genuine which is refreshing. He treats students not as inferior but as equals. He knows a lot but does not use that as an excuse to be prideful. He is humble and really listens to feedback. He wants what is best for the students.
Brother Miles knows his stuff where elections and government structure are concerned. As far as giving social, cultural, and historical background, he's more than happy to let videos do the teaching for him. Difficult quizzes thanks to a really broad material base, but the papers are fair and he'll alter your scores if you can justify your answers.
Matt is a good professor and I enjoyed going to his classes. I appreciated that he really knew what he was doing and that he cared about it. He was funny about things and is a real person, which was nice. I hated how the reading quizzes were, I could never get a decent grade on them. But if your willing to work a little, you can get a good grade.
Brother Miles is great! His lectures are awesome and he makes them fun, you'll learn a lot from them. His weekly quizzes are pretty difficult, but they're open book and open note, I still struggled with them though. Overall: good class, good professor, I'd take another class from him.
Bro Miles is dang funny. I can see if you're more soft-hearted and easily offended you might not like him, but he's a good Prof and he knows his stuff. You read and search a lot for his quizzes but that's also fine because he lets you use the book and work in groups to find the answers. All in all, he's the most down to earth professor I ever had.
Brother Miles knows his stuff, I think he could put a little more effort and enthusiasm to the class. He can offend in time with comments but is a good guy. Get ready to read in preparation for weekly quizzes.
This was a solid class and I learned a ton. Brother Miles knows what hes talking about so he gives a ton of information in his lectures which isnt too overwhelming because hes pretty funny. The quizzes are fairly tuff but they are open note, book, internet, and you can take it with friends so make a study group. Youll learn a ton!
Bro. Miles has really funny lectures but his I dont care philosophy almost demotivates you to care about his class too. Weekly quizzes take a lot of time with a lot of details. Every week you write a small essay on a different country and the TA doesnt read them so it makes the final paper you do for the class a nightmare.
Taking polsc200 from Brother Miles was by far the worst class I have ever taken. Miles doesn't teach anything of importance, you're basically left to suffer alone and teach yourself with youtube videos. He doesn't care for his students and get happy at the fact that a lot of people fail because he doesn't teach.
Brother Miles is a hilarious teacher. He lets you know what the expectations are, and if you care about your grade, he'll help you. Has to be the most chill professor I have ever had. He doesn't care about your grades, but is still a fair teacher. Has a special sense of humor most people love and few people hate. Kills any faith in science.
Few grades in this class that make it hard to bring up final grade even mid semester. The guy has no rubric for how he grades things really. Class had interesting lectures with lots of new info but pretty opinionated. Had weird due date for paper (Black Friday at 9 PM). Does his own thing and doesn't care what people think which can be good and bad
the dopest
Brother Miles is a great teacher, but be prepared to struggle. Polsci200 is very difficult and requires lots of effort. Brother Miles lets you know upfront that this is a hard course. However, if you have a good group in class and work together you can get a good grade.
Brother Mile's class is pretty difficult. But if you show up to class and put in a good effort, the information is very useful. He is also willing to help you outside of class. Would recommend taking his class!
Dr. Miles is the funniest professor I've ever had. Most of this class is trying to memorize code, so don't expect a lot of hands on teaching. He is willing to help out whenever help is needed and reopen homework and quizzes. YOU HAVE TO DO THE HOMEWORK. Do the homework. Pls dear God do the homework.
He is a great guy but he doesn't really teach for homework, he uses the homework to prepare you for lectures. So, he doesn't really teach. But he is funny. The class material is very hard.
Matt Miles is a pessimist, but in the best possible way. He teaches The material from the homework you did night before which can sometimes make it difficult. It is overall a good class. The material is difficult and you should really, truly, definitely, positively come to class, even though it isnt required.
The class is very straight forward. You will get the grade that you work for, which can be very rewarding. Brother Miles is excellent one on one and will help you succeed. Granted, his teaching style is not preferred because he expects a lot of teaching yourself. After the assignment , he helps you understand how to do the homework.
This course is very difficult and intentionally so. Bro Miles is willing to work with you and gives clear instructions for most of the work. My only gripe would be that you're kinda on your own when it comes to the R stuff.
Brother Miles is a great professor, he cares about his students and the subject he is teaching. The course is tough and you will have to stay on top of assignments in order to not fail behind. I've learned a lot from taking this class and I'm happy I know the knowledge I do now about R!
If you like turtles, you are going to love this class! Did you know that turtles and tortoises are interchangeable terms? They are the same! Have you ever been curious about what it would be like to live with a flock of rafters? Get ready to find out.
This is a really fun class, but you shouldn't add it if you're missing a class and seeking this one just to meet credit requirements. There is no extra credit allowed and no late work either, even if it shows up on your end. R is a difficult program, but once you understand it it's okay. Bro. Miles is pretty funny as well.
Brother Miles will try to scare you into dropping at the beginning of the course. He says that everything in R is difficult and that you will need hours upon hours to study. It isn't bad. Keep up on the assignments and go into class to learn, and you will. At best, this class is a study of reverse psychology where we are the subjects.
Miles is very knowledgable; he is definitely a professional in his field. He doesn't teach like any other professor. Instead of teaching you, he merely assists in your learning. If you want to know something, you'll have to ask him. Do not expect the mere attendance of his lectures to benefit you. Engagement is near necessary.
Brother Miles is hilarious. However, the majority of the content is not taught in class lectures. You will need to do a fair amount of work outside of class. Mike Marin will become your most-watched youtube channel. The class is manageable but I would not recommend taking it if you're already going to have a busy semester.
Don't be intimidated by all of the code. It's not as hard as it is intimidating. Just get there early, download the scripts/data, follow the instructions and you'll be fine. The hardest part is interpreting the data. Don't miss class. He is very pessimistic/realistic in good taste. His comedic relief helps with the hard concepts.
Brother Miles is a great professor. He knows what he's doing but he's not gonna baby you. If you want to do well, go to class and ask questions. If you put in effort and ask questions about what doesn't make sense you'll be fine. Don't believe anyone who says the class is impossible. And don't let Bro. Miles intimidate you into dropping the class.
Brother Miles is great one on one. In the classroom setting he is very pessimistic and all he wants to do is impress the people that audit his classes and his department. On the first day he said the only way to get an A in his class was to do the supplemental readings each week in addition to our 1,000 word summaries on our chapters each week.
He's a nice guy but this class kind of sucks. He is worried about what auditors think of his A students and not of what is actually going on with his students in class. His final paper and his final test are each worth 30% of your grade... making up over half of your grade. In the final you have to cite sources and all short answer questions.
Brother Miles is a very cool professor but expects perfect answers with perfect citations. Very difficult course! Lots of reading and lots of work. You have to put in so much time to get a decent score in his class. After 1000-2000 word summaries each week with supplementary readings, it's hard to see hours of work and feeling good then get a D.
Brother Miles cares about his students and is sincerely invested in their success. His coursework is very demanding. He will push you, but if you work hard, an A is achievable. He is a fair grader. Expect heavy reading and writing. Doesn't give out extra credit so don't ask. Lectures a lot, but bring a sense of humor with you to class.
Here's very funny and is willing to help outside of class. Sometimes he makes a mistake on the quiz so don't be afraid to tell him his quizzes are wrong. Most of the time he'll give you the points back. You have to go to class. If you don't go to class you will have 0 chance of getting a good grade in the class.
This was a tough course, but brother miles was very understanding and supportive. It makes you work and alcançar be very confusing and time consuming, but if you do your best youll get through
He doesn't hold your hand but you can work as a group which i recommend highly. You'll pass if you do that.
This is an amazing class, I now understand the basics of the studies that are used in academia and know how to analyze them. This is such a valuable skill. Brother Miles explains well and is always willing to take extra time to help us learn. If you keep up with the class by doing all your homework and attending you will do great. Do group studies!
Professor Miles is very knowledgable on the topics studied in class. There are difficult concepts that will be used throughout the semester (especially the second half) and so while attendance isn't required, you will want to make an appearance for the lectures. Mr. Miles has a unique sense of humor and you will get a good kick out of class.
Brother Miles is constantly cracking jokes and makes it seem like he doesn't care about your grade. In fact one of his common quotes is "don't worry you'll do terrible!" However, he is very willing to help you as long as you ask. Class attendance is NOT necessary and often more confusing than helpful. Good teacher who makes a hard subject funny.
Brother Miles is a good man. It just takes some time to see that! He's hilarious and doesn't care what anyone thinks which can be a blessing and a curse. It takes a lot of hard work, but an A is possible. Also, attendance may not be mandatory, but if you are trying to get an A (or pass the course in general), go to class and ask questions.
The class was difficult but spending extra time with other students and in the R lab was very helpful. Class attendance wasnt mandatory, but if you dont plan on being there itll be hard to pass. Very unique personality. Will make fun of you passions, but hes approachable and willing to help.
Brother Miles is really passionate about getting polisci majors actual research skills, and really passionate about the school as well. The subject matter is difficult for most who take this class, but he teaches it in a straightforward way. I recommend brother Miles because of his relaxed, "nothing-matters" attitude, which is rare and refreshing.
Overall enjoyed his class. I wouldnt recommend taking until later in school but before your senior capstone. Not a freshman friendly class. He will help you if you ask, reachable outside of class. Trys to make a lot of jokes in class that get gradually less funny. Strongly recommend making a Facebook group chat of the whole class.
I took this class remotely (online), so I understand that things are going to be harder. But while my other professors were willing to work with their students and help them, he was not. Day one we were told that he expected half of us to fail. There's no support system for his challenging class. Midterm is a paper he expects to be journal worthy.
Took him remotely because of pandemic. First day of class, tells us he expects 50% of us to fail. My computer shorted out about halfway through the semester, so I was unable to do any homework. Emailed him afterwards, explained, and was told to suck it up, I was getting a 0 on everything. All my other classes were As. Withdrew immediately.
Bro. Miles is a teacher that lets you know upfront the rigor and importance of the material he covers. He knows that success in his class comes with effort. I think that's why he doesn't require attendance. If you ask for help and show that you're making a true effort, he still won't bless you with a good grade, but you'll earn one.
Mike Marin does not need to introduce himself every single time.
Brother Miles has become one of my favorite teachers and I look forward to taking more classes from him in the future. He did not lecture this semester but was always willing to help us with homework. I did not find this class very difficult but it depends on the person. He is a great teacher! I would highly recommend taking him.
He started the class by saying that he expected many of us to fail. He also doesn't prepare you at all for the amount of reading required. Furthermore, his grading structure makes no sense with more than 25% of your final grade based on a vague final exam. I withdrew from the course because it wasn't worth it to take it from him.
Dont take this class he talks off topic alot and your learning on your own your whole grade depends on a paper that not fair quizzes are hard because you use theee books so hard to keep up he never uses powernpoint for book should take online do not take him you wont his structure is hard he also wont help you!
Brother Miles is hilarious, his classes are super relaxed as long as you're keeping up with the material. I enjoyed his real life advice and the skill he brought to the class. He is a little hard to enjoy though, his class is hard but it teaches you real life good skills that you will need in the job market. Solid choice.
This course is a difficult course and you cannot afford to fall behind. You are able to work through assignment independently or with classmates which I highly suggest. If you complete the readings, turn the assignments on time, and come to Brother Miles with any questions you will do fine in this course.
His class is difficult. It requires a lot of work. Always do the chapter quizzes and it should help a lot. Try to do your best, and it should work. It is a difficult class, but just try to everything and you should hopefully get a good grade.
For the Research Method class, there are two things you need to know. The class covers two aspects. One in research design, and the other in inferential statistics. You use a program called R to compute the data. Do this course with a study group, but don't let your group do all the work for you. Brother Miles is a big help as well. Good luck!
This class was really great in being able to help you learn about statistics and how to use the program R. He helps you a lot with the first half of the semester project with research as well. I would suggest taking this class in person as I feel I would have been able to get a lot more out of it and asked questions better.
The Research Methods class teaches you how to create a Literature Review and how to use R. To learn R, you definitely have to do the readings and spend a lot of time figuring out the quizzes each week. There isn't too much homework every week, but the homework will take you quite some time to finish. Recommend taking in person and not remote.
This is a hard class but brother Miles makes it easier to bare. I took this class during the Covid-19 pandemic so the class was online. We had few classes during the semester, most of the learning was by watching videos or reading. Working with a group of people from the classroom makes it easier to learn.
Professor Miles has a unique way of teaching. I wish I would've had the opportunity to learn from him in person instead of online because the course material is difficult. If you do take this class from him be sure to start a group chat with other students and set up times to study together outside of class. Good Luck.
This class oscillates between being too difficult and too easy. Essentially, once you figure it out it becomes gradeschool level math, but the barriers to figuring it out are often obscure and confusing. Fortunately, Prof. Miles is reliably helpful in this regard. Unfortunately, there were a few too many times of confusing instructions.
I took Brother Miless Research Methods class and got an A in it. I took it online and honestly wish it would have been face-to-face because coding is hard to learn. Brother Miles will give you lectures and helpful videos but for the most part youre learning the information by yourself.
Overall, I appreciated his videos and lectures. The coursework is pretty straightforward if you watch those. However, my biggest issue with Professor Miles is he sets you up to think you'll fail the course. In his first lecture he talks about how most of you will fail. A bit discouraging but overall he does well.
I've had Brother Miles twice and he is extremely helpful, and effective, at teaching course material and helping guide you. Right now POLSC200 is only offered remotely. Taking it remotely can be challenging. If you aren't good at learning/working independently, or problem solving alone, then wait until the on-campus option becomes available again
He is solid. I mean, he will set the expectations very high the first, so that there are is no confusion for the remaining of the semester. He will tell you that you will have to earn your A+. This is for real the hardest class I have taken, so make sure you don't register for other hard classes in the semester you plan to take it.
Professor Miles seems like a cool person outside of teaching. As a professor, he is hard to get ahold of and doesn't teach you. He held class once a week to answer questions but never really went through material with us. He also got off topic often and class ended up being pointless most of the time. There's also currently no tutor for this class.
This is a hard class. Miles is a great teacher and may be brutally honest at times, but explains well. R Studio is not easy to pick up so you actually have to put in the time to learn it, but if you actively participate in the activities and assignments you will be good to go. Get a reliable study group and actually participate with them.
Brother Miles held one question hour a week instead of the remote scheduled lectures. He did not explain any of the material, and there is no tutor for the course. He did not provide feedback and refused accommodations to me as a student receiving disability services. My study group and I had to do our best to figure it out together all semester.
He is as lazy of a professor as I am a student, and I currently have a 96%. He doesn't actually hold class. He has a lot of pre-recorded lectures. He only holds a Q&A session on Mondays. This is absolutely not my preferred style of learning. Hes open to meet with students on zoom, which Im not comfortable doing, although I often have questions.
(I took this course remotely.) There was only class once a week on Monday and it was not a lecture, just a Q&A that was optional. You have to teach yourself a lot and rely on the R studio textbook and online tutorials to do the assignments. Its not super time-intensive but the quizzes and assignments can be challenging. Get a study budy!
There is almost daily homework to do, and late work is not accepted, but I am glad I did not listen to the students who told me that this class was a nightmare. You might feel stupid sometimes, but Bro. Miles grades based on effort. Do your best, be punctual, ask questions, and work hard. Bro. Miles is busy but tries to bavailable outside of class.
Brother MIles is a great teacher, but the course layout seems a lot more like an online class than a remote class, so beware. Overall, it is a very difficult class, but he has an abundance of resources on canvas. He is willing to meet outside of class, and is rather timely in answering emails. If you put in the time and effort, you will pass.
I think Brother Miles is good at explaining things and is pretty flexible too. This class works best in general for people that like online classes. The only thing I would say is he uses this program called "R" for research methods--it can be quite difficult to get a grasp of. But overall, he's a good professor!
If you're motivated and a self-learner this will be perfect for you. It's pretty easy to get an A as long as you stay on top of assignments; the midterm was very time-consuming. He doesn't allow late work so be careful. We met once a week but the meetings were just for questions, not lectures. MAKE A STUDY GROUP IT WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE
Brother Miles is very knowledgeable about what he teaches. There was a lot of reading, and if you dont have time for it that makes the class harder, but the tests are open book which is amazing. Brother Miles is great and wants his students to succeed and have real world experience, and he tried to be flexible, but hes firm about deadlines.
We had 11 books for this class, but they were all interesting. Bro Miles has become pretty progressive on any social issue that he discusses and has even gone so far as to say the Church is wrong on its definition of gender. I wouldn't take him again because of the ideology he pushes (I like to form my own ideas) but I think he is an okay teacher.
This is just a bad professor. End of story. Terrible attitude. Not helpful. Does that sound good? Not to me.
Great professor, most of the class was lecture and discussion style he really gave us opportunities to discuss and debate many political ideologies.
Brother Miles is one of my favorite teachers and I look forward to taking more classes from him in the future. He is a great teacher! I would highly recommend taking him.
Brother Miles is not a great professor. Most of the time he spent in class talking about things other than what we were supposed to be talking about. I felt like I was wasting my time. The quizzes were pretty much the only assignments and they were hard and confusing. So if you did not do well on the quizzes, you did not do well in the class.
I think Professor Miles really has a passion for his research, his teaching however is lacking. He is a fair grader, and the workload is fine, but I don't think I've learned anything in this class I didn't learn in a high school stats class. He's a super chill dude, but I can't say that I think he likes teaching this class.
This is a really fun class, but you shouldn't add it if you're missing a class and seeking this one just to meet credit requirements. There is no extra credit allowed and no late work either. Brother Miles is hilarious, but the majority of the content is not taught in class lectures. You will need to do a fair amount of work outside of class.
Bro. Miles is very knowledgeable; he is definitely a professional in his field. This class challenged my thinking quite a lot. Bro. Miles He doesn't teach like any other professor. He expects you to take charge of your own learning. Do not expect the mere attendance of his lectures to benefit you.
I loved Brother Miles. He is so caring and super funny. If you like to read this is the class for you. It is a TON of reading (several books over the semester). The information is fascinating and it's a really fun class. There are quizzes and papers every week or two. He's also not biased about what he teaches. Do the work and you will be fine!
I am currently participating in a graduate writing camp and can't thank Bro. Miles enough for properly preparing me for research. This research methods class has given me tools that others at the camp are unfamiliar with. Thanks to Bro. Miles' efforts, the camp has been a good refresher and I'm excited to utilize my practiced skills.
If you want to learn that all of academia and stats is a joke, then take Brother Miles, he's a gem. I was terrified to take a stats class, (I am awful at math and computers) but every assignment has detailed follow along videos. You can email him if you think there were mistakes on the quizzes and he is pretty flexible.
Professor Miles is great. However, you have to be wililng to put in the work to understand the material. He provides you with the resources, but you have to actually use them or you won't do well. Also, if you don't do assignments, it will drop your grade so fast (as it should). Don't skip class.
Good professor, very humorous. He likes to troll a little and say stuff like "the Google" as if he were 80 years old. A lot of polisci students will struggle because its stats lite class. The midterm is a little more difficult, but the final is easy. He teaches you all the stuff you need to do in Stata. Go to class and read the book to get an A.
Professor Miles may seem harsh at first but he is willing to work with you if you work with him. Our entire class asked for an extension on the final and he gave it to us. He's also very funny and charismatic. One thing that was difficult is his syllabus says he doesn't accept late work. He will hold you to that no matter the circumstances.
Brother Miles is fun and loves political research! I didn't learn as much from this class because we only had it once a week. I don't know that I could pick out certain principles that I took away from class. But he makes research fun and engaging.
Brother Miles is knowledgeable and passionate about this topic. He has shared with us that he likes to do things from class, like statistical analysis, when he's bored. Not only is he good at it, but he is also patient and understanding as students work to learn the material. The lectures, though, were a bit rushed with not much interaction.
Worst political science class I have ever taken. Professor genuinely seems bored teaching the class. Bland lectures, often ended class way early the second the slideshow ran out. Hardly any discussion facilitated between classmates. Zero-tolerance policy for late work, which tanks your grade quickly if assignments are even minutes late.
Brother Miles is very fair in how he talks about polarizing issues. I never think that he is trying to persuade me into thinking a certain way, and it's actually difficult to guess what his real opinion is on things that he hasn't explicitly stated. He's also entertaining, which is extremely welcome in a class that's an hour and a half
He is knowledgeable, and his Power Points and the materials he uses for class are entertaining and educational. He is good at getting people to participate by asking questions that make us think and therefore respond in many different ways.
Brother Miles is a knowledgeable and passionate professor. Though the lectures can feel rushed, he provides great resources and is understanding as students learn the material. unstuck AI and a study group are super helpful for acing this course.
Very good teacher. Explains things well. You need to work to get a good grade but is achievable.
Brother Miles is really passionate about Research Methods and how statistics is used in Political Science. While the class used STATA, I was already more comfortable with R and used that instead, and had little to no issues when it came to assignments. He is helpful if you reach out to him outside of class. Genuinely cares and wants you to succeed.
Brother Miles is not the problem, 50/30 minute 5 videos daily, "r" and other online coding nonsense. Data science lab helps, won't understand a thing if you're not into coding or technology. The number of hours taking to learn stuff for "r" and other applications will take so much time that it will hurt your other classes.UslessRequiredClass!
Great guy, very knowledgeable. I did find his class structure odd since it was only 7 weeks of in class attendance and the rest was working on a major paper. I would have preferred to work in class on it. Work hard, do your best and TURN IN ASSIGNMENTS ON TIME. Late work is completely out of the question. Overall, he is great and kind. Work hard.
He was really fun
