Great Philosophy teacher. Highly recommended if you need to take philosophy.
Matt is an excellent teacher...and fine too. He explains everything with clarity and is willing to help when needed.
Matt is a good teacher. He makes the class alot of fun, and is always willing to help if needed. Also understanding and somewhat negotiable. If you have to take philosophy, take it from him, you'll like going to class
I took the tv class from him. He is very helpful and fair. The class is interesting and you wont mind having to stare at him for a few hours =D
I didn't care for Matt's teaching style. He was very unclear on course assignments and didn't score them accordingly. I enjoyed the lack of lecture and the open environment to speak, but as a whole, I don't feel like I got much out of the class.
Nice guy, easy class, fairly interactive towards the end. A little vague, though.
Very cool teacher. Made the material being covered fun and interesting. Learned a lot from this class, and plan on taking more from him.
Matt is a very knowledgable teacher who provokes independant thinking on the student. Here you can discuss anything & everthing. Hes not afraid to adress those issues that others wont. If you have something to say he will test your logical consistency. The course work helps you gain more knowled
Extremely understanding and a great instructor. I strongly reccomend him!!
Very interesting class. Loved the open discussion style and the thought provoking activities. He was able to keep the class on task and not let one person take over discussion. I highly recommend him as an instructor.
Good guy
very good teacher, loose and not overly demanding of students, while at the same time getting the lessons across and getting everyone involved in discussion and thought. dont need to take any more of his classes but probably will take more anyway.
One of the best professors in my entire college career. He really opened my eyes to the subject of philosophy.
Mr. Stockton is a great philosophy teacher who makes the class very open to various views and opinions. His class was always fun to attend as well as to argue with others.
great class, fun discussions about opening your eyes to the manipulation of TV. very sharp proff. with great insight. A little unclear on the final project and paper. I participated a lot in class and was disapointed that he gave me a B. funnest class that I have taken though. He sets the bar high. take the class youll like it.

Matthew inspire me in a way few teachers have managed to. As a student with a constantly-changing major, it isn't saying much to say he change my mind about my intended future plans, but I think anyone taking his class will discover an easier, more inspired life in his/her immediate future. Enjoy him--I know I did!
Says he has a discussion based class, but not so much. Not really a philosophy class so much as a Matt Stockton's Philosophy of pop culture class. Taught a lot of opnion as fact and otherwise just seemed like a hack. But at least he was easy to get an A from.
Great style, down to earth, smart as all get out. Just an all around joy to learn from. You get what you want out of the classes, you can coast if that's your thing but I would recommend engaging in the discussions and learning a lot. Good stuff, especially the TV class.
i only had this guy for a few days then i switched out because i wasnt interested in the subject, but i could tell hes a great guy and loves what he does. Sounded easy and pretty fun... just not the topic i would like to be in.
He seems like a generally ok guy and I liked that he wasn't afraid to discuss ANY topic and that he was all about teaching you HOW to think rather than WHAT to think. Personally, I dislike the ambiguity involved in all philosophy...if there are no definite answers why waste ur time n energy on it? He's an ok guy(and cute!) but philosophy's useless!
I am currently taking his class and I love it. He doesn't give any tests or quiz, and only gives a couple opinion papers. I would definitely recommend him. I'm trying to get another class with him next term.
I entered the class not really knowing what I was getting into, but was really surprised. He is a great teacher, laid back, but he's not afraid to ask the tough questions tho. Light homework (a few papers), no quizzes. Be prepared for your thinking to be challenged in a good way!
I really liked Matt as a professor. His class was easy (limited workload, unchecked readingt, four small papers and a big final paper that you had to present), but all the ideas presented were pretty difficult to grasp. He's very open and has very interesting discussions, and a really great professor -- you can tell he loves teaching this.
Matt is my favorite teacher. He's others-focused and is forgiving and understanding. He is not bias and he listens to the students. He also is positive and happy- I looked forward to going to his class. He is a fun teacher and makes people think. I like Philosophy now. I never realized there was so much to think about! This class is a benefit!
If you enjoy a discussion-centered atmosphere as opposed to being "taught", then Matt is who you're looking for. Also, pretty much everything is due the last day of class, so all you have to worry about is attendence mainly. An easy grader so far. Laid-back and respectful to students.
Cool, laid-back prof and class! All work (1 paper+6 case studies)are due the last day of the class, but attendance and active participation is worth 25% of your grade. The one night/week class was 3 1/2 hrs long, but it went by fast cuz the topics are so fascinating! Obviously invaluable for those going into healthcare. Open-discussion atmosphere.
Poor, poor Matt. It must be so frustrating to be constantly explaining to freshmen that dissecting an argument has nothing to do with your personal views on said argument. I think by the end of the term, only about a third of the class had grasped that concept. He was a blast, though! I highly recommend him if you're a critical thinker.
matt was a great teacher. really smart guy and really opens your mind up during discussions..i enjoyed his class and wouldnt hesistate to take him again
Mr. Stockton's very down to earth easy to talk to. Class was comfortable, he knew the material well, and the course was a fine introduction. We didn't have a lot of homework. If I could give one warning, he speaks a lot during sessions. Good if you like listening more than speaking. Otherwise, just stay involved in the conversation.
Matt is a very good teacher - laid back, easy to follow, humorous. Has high expectations of students to participate in class, so if you're not a "joiner" go somewhere else. He is very opinionated - while he listens to student opinions, you always know whose really counts...
Matt is a great Professor, his interaction with students was stupendus! His presentation of material in class was great!I not only enjoyed his class, but i learned alot.He has one quiz, 6 study cases and no midtern, no final but you have to analyse a real case and everything is due the last day of class. Overall,he is great!
Matt rocks!!!! His teaching style encourages student participation and all views are respected, whether he agrees or not... Loved his class and my A!!!!
Matt is great! Many students return to take his other classes, including myself. He is thought provoking, intelligent, interesting and a very nice guy. He's fairly easy on the homework, and reasonable in his expectations. Time well spent!
Matt is a great teacher, well prepared for the class, knows the material well, and by the end of this class you will not only recognize what you personally believe but also why and you'll be able to defend your position. Discussion style is only intimidating to some the first week or so. Definitely recommend!
This class is awesome. You are graded based on attendance and class participation. If you are quiet and can't be involved in discussion, you will loose 5 points. Matt is great. Don't wait until the last minute to do your case studies. I highly recommend this teacher. My favorite class so far!!
Matt is one of my favorite professors so far! He is extremely laid back, and extremely helpful. The discussions are always interesting and you never get bored. I would highly recommend Matt Stockton to anyone, and I look forward to taking another class from him in the future.
He's awesome!
He's a nice guy, but for an ethics teacher he's very narrow minded and tends to dismiss the ideas of those he disagrees with. All in all though, his expectations are straight-forward, and getting good grades in his class is easy as long as you do the assigned work. Be sure to read the syllabus, as he rarely reminds students about assignments.
Matt is Great! He is very open minded. He lets you know where he stands on the subjects discussed, and encourages you to explain why you believe what you believe-the whole point of this class. The student who thought he was closed minded must not have understood the purpose of the class. I'd love to take more classes from Matt!
Matt is a brilliant teacher. And he's not closed minded. The assignments are straight forward, and if you can explain why you believe what you believe you get full credit. You don't have to tailor your beliefs to do well, which is the case with so many other instructors. Highly recommend him. He should be teaching at Harvard.
Best teacher I've had so far! He is SO intelligent and is really able to get you to "think outside the box" with his class discussions. Never condesending and always respectful of other's ideas and beliefs. I plan on taking every class available with this man!
Matt is a fantastic teacher. He is very respectful toward different views, is focused on student involvement, and wants to expand your ideas. Class requires participation, and only a few 700 word papers which you can write however you want. This class is an easy A, but it's full of interesting ideas and Matt rocks, so it's still worth taking!
Great professor! Makes your consider things you might not have otherwise considered. Handles sensitive discussions very well. I really wish he taught more classes I need to take!
Matt is a great teacher. He is very clear about his expectations, moderates interesting and sometimes controversial class discussions with remarkable neutrality and challenges students to address their beliefs from a new perspective. It's clear that he loves philosophy and loves his job-anyone who can should take his class!
This class wasn't what I expected it to be. Makes you think about your own ethics, but wasn't very interesting most of the time. Seemed pretty biased during certain conversations. I wouldn't take again.
Assignments were a 700 word paper every other week. 5 page final paper with a small group presentation. Class was mostly discussion. But matt keeps it very interesting. Awesome guy. Always willing to work with you, very understanding. Definitely recommend.
Matt is a wonderful professor and seemed genuine in wanting to know his students. The group talks did help to bounce ideas and understanding off of other students. Very different class than I expected, alot more interesting! Not alot of homework, but be prepared to understand the material and present it well in your papers.
One of my favorites! Assignments are clearly explained during the first week of class. He leaves room for lots of discussion, but still gets everything done. No textbook is required for the class. This class gets you thinking!
Matt is a great instructor as well as an overall good guy. He's very down to earth and friendly and made me feel comfortable voicing my opinion on topics. He WILL play Devil's advocate, so be warned. :)
One of the best teachers I have ever had! Genuine, cares about the students (and their opinions) and manages to care about each students' growth without being trite. Very easy class if you show up, challenge your own assumptions and think a little. HIGHLY recommend, will be purposefully taking another class from this teacher in the future.
Awesome professor, always helpful and nice. Encourages critical thinking and plays devil's advocate in a useful way. I wish I could take philosophy from him forever. Assignments are not difficult if you put in the work and think about it. The assignments were interesting and fun, and there are no tests or exams.
This is my second term taking a class from Matt--HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Allows for personal growth, open direction in assignments, VERY accommodating, total warm-fuzzy class if you want it to be. Love the teacher, my classmates--not all of them. I would take this as an intro to Personal Philosophy/Awareness...and you watch TV for hmwk/class :)
Its so rare to find great teachers like matt, one of the best if not the best i have ever ever ever had. You will come away from his course with an ability to think more critically for yourself and understand the implications of those thoughts, highly suggest
Matt is an awesome teacher. Philosophy often requires understanding abstract concepts, Matt has a way of making those abstract concepts much easier to digest.
Engaging Professor that leads great casual group discussions/lectures. I learned to reevaluate my set beliefs that did not have strong foundations and how to look through other perspectives whether I agreed with them or not.
A great teacher. He is very fair and doesn't leave you guessing. I didn't have a text book for this class, however there was homework. It was pretty easy in my opinion.
This class was amazing! It really makes you think and Matt really tries to help you figure out what you value in life and in your career. He is very laid back and his class is very low stress. I don't need any other philosophy classes but I would like to take more classes from him because the class was that great.
great experience would take psy class from him again. Facilitates engaging conversations very well, holds class attention.Has democratic views but not overbearing.Punctual, organized and prepared at all times. Genuinely interested.Material presented is very interesting and engaging. Nice group of folks in class
A nice teacher. Highly recommended. You might get an A if you always come to class, be active and do all the works. He is very helpful and care for his students.
Matt's awesome-- one of the smartest people i've ever met. he is great at challenging you and testing your beliefs. class was fun and conversation was always interesting. plus now i know what to do in a zombie apocalypse. :)
Matt is very clear in lectures and on assignments. Answers questions fully. He expects students to at least try to examine their beliefs. If you don't like to think about why you believe something, this may be a difficult class for you. I enjoyed the class immensely.
Matt is a cool teacher and really makes you think about things you've never considered before! Read the chapters that are required and you can gain a lot from this class and teacher! He makes philosophy a lot more understandable in a sense and also how to analyze and think about topics!!!
I took my first online class ever with Matt and it was a great experience. I was nervous taking a philosophy class online, but the way he structured the online discussion made it easy to converse with other students about the topic presented. I recommend this instructor and would love to take another class from him.
Matt's class was so interesting. I thought this would be a fluff class but he actually challenges you to participate and open up to new ideas. It is impossible not to be engaged in this class. Attendance and participation are part of the grade, with good reason. Show up to class and keep up with the assignments and you'll be good.
Wow, Matt is an amazing teacher and a super cool guy. Easy A- grade made up of attendance, 10 pt quiz, 1 essay, and 6 short case studies from book. I took class from 6-9:30 and I was never bored. Such interesting subjects and he really keeps the class involved and talking. Take a class with Matt. You will learn a lot and have a great time.
Matt is a great teacher. He really gets you thinking. He is always willing to help and will give advice even after the course has ended.
Great teacher, great guy. Very helpful and understanding of everyday unfortunate situations. I will probably be taking another of his classes soon just because how great of a learning experience it was.
Web. What a great instructor! Matt is so helpful. He responds quickly to emails and is always willing to help. I rally enjoyed the tests for his class bc they really make you think. The way he structures his class is flawless and comprehensive. He gives clear direction and is easy to communicate with. I would certainly recommend him.
I wasn't sure about this class in the beginning, but ended up LOVING it and Matt! He is an awesome teacher and I enjoyed his class very much. I felt like the discussions were thought provoking and was made for more interaction between other classmates. Would no doubt take another class from Matt!!
Matt structures open conversation flawlessly, guiding the class through topics until suddenly time's up. He is professional, approachable, fair, engaging and friendly. His class will keep you on the edge of your seat. You will come to a lot of realization. Soon you will find yourself questioning media and reality daily until your friends hate you.
I liked his class. Took it online. Weekly 20 question quiz, along with weekly discussions and article analysis. Grades everything quickly usually by the Monday after assignments are due Tuesday. U also get to take each quiz 3 times with your highest score taken. Would recommend to other students
Matt is one of the best teachers I've ever had, he is thought provoking and inspiring. I would major in Philosophy if I could take most of my classes with him. He challenges you and pushes you to understand yourself and the world around you. He makes the concepts applicable to your everyday. Always a joy to be in class. Participate, it's worth it.
Such a great instructor that I referred many of my peers to him. Just a sincere, intelligent, honest guy who really cares & "gets" students' comments/perspectives. PCC is lucky to have him!
He is a great teacher! He gives plenty of thorough feedback and is a prompt grader. Your grade is made up of your discussion activity and quizzes. If you participate, then you will get an A. Take his class!!!
Matt, is a teacher who really takes time to explain and facilitate conversation about the topics. He makes them applicable to your life. He takes interest in his students. He's very openminded and likes to play devils advocate. He's brilliant, inspirational and I would take all my classes with him. Put in the work, he doesn't ask for much.
Matt was an awesome teacher. If you love philosophy, so does Matt, and he'll make you love it even more. No tests and assignments actually encourage critical thinking and facilitate learning! Pick Matt!
I took his class online. I really like it, I liked how he had the power points for the class. Responds to e-mails quickly. I would take him again he is awesome.
Matt has been my favorite professor at PCC, by far. He is very insightful in his field, and encourages us to question and discuss with him. The more participation going on in the class, the better! We had some very interesting, and thought-provoking conversations in our Being and Knowing course. No tests, very little hw. He is super handsome, too!
- Over all amazing class & instructor - Grades papers very fast - Attendance matters but understanding of life getting in the way - Class consits of 3 reflection papers and one big final paper with small group presentation - One book is required - Very fair grading - Very knowledgeable! You will definitely learn something new!
Matt is a very helpful teacher. He gives individual feedback on all assignments, grades quickly, and gives very clear instructions.
Matt was very friendly from the start. He is a very good teacher who engages the class everyday, however he doesn't make you talk if your not up to it. Very down to earth and I believe he relates well with students. The best part is he makes you think for yourself!
I generally don't write reviews for my professors but Matt's class was awesome! If you want to take philosophy, Matt is the professor for you!
Matt is wonderful. He is someone who is clearly passionate about teaching, which is refreshing. He wants students to be successful but above all else, he wants you to grow intellectually (and for yourself). If you're on the fence about philosophy, try it with Matt!
Matt was an effective instructor with his clear lectures and objectives. His quizzes can be challenging, but you have 3 attempts that you can make(the highest grade that you earned counts). He truly cares about creating a positive learning environment and wants everyone to succeed.
As long as you can articulate your thoughts, and actually try to think about the assignment it's an easy A. Matt also has an attractive voice, and it makes listening to his lectures much easier, but that's neither here nor there. (:
What a disappointment this class was. More concerned with being friends than a professor, the room was regularly out of control. The pointless discussions ranged from inappropriate discussions of violence, to completely ignorant comments on race/sexuality/ability, to questions in no way related to topic. Frustrating discussion of outdated material.
I took a class called Being & Knowing with Matt, and it was a wonderful introduction to philosophy! It was relatively stress-free and changed my perspective more than once! Matt is VERY cool and laid back (especially with due dates) and he also gives tons of feedback on the few essays he assigns. I really loved Matt as a prof, and he's cute, too!
Hes very understanding and is really flexible with resubmitting assignments and getting caught up. Really funny and does have amazing points/lectures.
Intellectually stimulating and engaging lectures. Genuinely caring professor who's pretty flexible with anything as long as you communicate with him well.
This professor is awesome, he works with you, he is there for you and he helps you to achieve your academic goals. I recommend him to my fellow students, he really helped to make my semester more manageable when I was having a meltdown.
So genius, so funny and relaxed, such engaging lectures. And long after you take the class he remembers you and always says hello. His lectures changed my life and his classes are always so, so fun.
Matt is very smart & funny! He engages the class with amazing lectures and challenges the group with new ideas. The things you'd talk about in any of his PHL classes are extremely eye opening, & it's important to remember that philosophy is subjective and that the concepts are ones that don't have to agree with. But really, take a class w/ Matt.
Matt is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is so caring and fun and gives the best lectures! Showing up to class and participating is definitely a must, but as long as you do that and turn your assignments in on time, you are golden! He doesn't assign a lot of outside work, and is there to help when you are in a crisis! Take his class!
Matt is one of those professors who genuinely cares about his students, and he's also one of the most intelligent and thoughtful people I've ever met. He goes above and beyond to make sure his students feel comfortable and respected, and has no ego around his authoritative role. His class felt like therapy! Take it.
Kind guy. Easy grader with few homework assignments. Classes are basically just long group conversations with the occasional small group activity.
Matt is very kind and understanding. He makes the class super interesting. It is more discussion based. I only had 4 homework assignments this term, and he was very clear what the expectations were for those assignments. He also gave us a week to complete them. He is a great philosophy teacher and I highly suggest taking him :)
Matt is my favorite professor of all time, before taking his Being & Knowing I had decided I wanted to be a marketing major - after one class I knew I wanted to change to philosophy. He cares so much about our learning and if we're really understanding the content within the class rather than just getting a grade. I wish all teachers were like him
Matt is a great Philosophy teacher. He loves stirring discussion and I never felt stressed in his class. Matt makes it a point to talk with his students and check-in. He gives good feedback on papers and his lectures are easy to follow.
Matt starts some of the best conversations you will experience in your life. Really eye opening, and refreshing. Not a lot of homework, participation is important, would take any of his classes.
Matt's class is a great introduction to philosophy, both him and the material are very approachable. Very discussion oriented, so come willing to engage. There are four short essays and a personal manifesto. He offers great feedback and challenges you to think for yourself. Though it was virtual, I was still excited for class each week.
This class was just fine, but could be better. You end up watching a lot of TV for homework. Matt likes to play devils advocate. I suppose this is common in philosophy, but I don't think the class is better for it. The idea behind the class is really interesting and you do learn some cool stuff, but a lot of it is pretty basic.
Matt is probably one of the best professors at PCC. This was my first philosophy class and I absolutely loved my time in it. Most time on Zoom was spent talking about pretty much whatever we wanted (while staying within the topic at hand), and he was always extremely respectful of our beliefs and morals. Highly recommend his classes!
His teaching style doesn't involve quizzes but rather lots of group discussions and about five assignments throughout the course. He is known to be approachable and easy to communicate with, making his classes enjoyable for students. Overall, Stockton is a great choice for anyone looking for a philosophy professor who cares about their students.
Matt is by far the best professor I've encountered. He's extremely insightful and wise, I loved hearing what he had to say each day. He communicates ideas in a clear and down-to-earth way that was very easy to understand. He's extremely caring as well, and wants you to take care of yourself first. He gives thorough feedback and extensions. 11/10
Analysis and Eval of Argument is my first philosophy class. I absolutely love it! It has given me so many tools to improve how I communicate and interpret information. Matt is an intelligent, informative, and kind teacher. I can't say enough good things and would definitely like to learn more philosophy from him. Thank you, Matt!
my favorite professor this term, hes super funny, nice, and very authentic. going to his class is really important but he has zoom on in case you have to miss a class. the class hurts my brain and he always answers your question asking you another question lol. id totally take it again
This course is amazing and honestly changed me as a person for the better. I would recommend taking it, or any course that Matt is teaching. He is open with his expectations; his grading is fair, and he is understanding if things come up and you need to miss a class or turn something in late. Just communicate, and you'll do well in his class.
Very discussion based, but great content. He values student opinions and encourages others to think outside the box. The assignments are explicitly stated in syllabus and you are given plenty of time to complete assignments.
I would definitely take this class again. very very very nice guy, he's ver flexible, easy to approach, and respectful. the whole term is literally discussions and attendance graded.
Matt is a fantastic teacher who is comfortable teaching. He's able to get his point across with easy to digest words, you don't find yourself feeling confused. Easy on students, no class work– just discussions. Homework is limited and enjoyable. I find myself eager to get to class and fully engaged. Matt has only treated me with respect.
Exceptionally kind & helpful, lectures were engaging and insightful. Matt is clearly someone who enjoys what he does and cares about the impact he has on students. Went out of his way to help me on multiple occasions and treated all students with equal respect. I'd recommend any of his classes !
