His office hours amount to about the 20 minutes before class starts twice a week. If you take his class and feel that you might not like it the first week, that is a SIGN TO DROP THE CLASS! Do not wait.
Not very interesting or helpful. Don't recommend him!
Sharp guy, you have to realize what his point is, and then you will get it. Has lots of real world experience to help the subject matter.
In his class right now. Horrible teacher. Not a teacher, a business man. Has no true teaching ability, always goes off into tangents about who he knows and tries to be super funny. FLIES through slides, have to read the book. When asking him a question after class, is very short with answers unless you're a cute girl. Do not take him, I'm annoyed &
This class is very easy, and Watanabe is awesome. He tries to be intimidating the first couple weeks, but he is very easy-going and if you do the assignments and read the chapters, an easy A is what you'll get. Take him!
Not an interesting class. Poor teaching style, I dropped.
Why are people whining? Just finished taking his class.Super easy/chill.Brings snacks for the class.Only gave quizzes, SO easy.Gives all the questions the week before. Drops the lowest.1 presentation/writeup with group, easy.Be there to get quiz questions.NO FINAL! I put in mediocre effort got a B.Didn't get an A b/c I didn't show up every week.
He expects the class to participate but if anyone says anything "wrong" he is the biggest jerk ever. So only two people ever talk. He wastes class time making worthless jokes and he takes roll everyday about three minutes before class starts. If you are not there for roll you are absent and will loose points. Good thing is online exams. Easy.
You will do a big project and 2 test .the project is more than half of your grade and it will be based on if he liked you or not, you will have 10% participation points which you will never get much of it.. ?he has no interest in teaching and he brags his stuff.you will not be treated fairly and will not get a get that you deserve.
Not recommended. Take a different professor.
He's very helpful, but you actually have to ask. Group project, 6 big quizzes, not final. He's funny, you might get frustrated so ask for help ASAP, but take practice quizzes and get a good team and you will do fine. I think he actually likes teaching and students.
Talks about himself the entire class period and breezes through powerpoint slides. Does not help you prepare for tests. I essentially had to teach myself and the only reason I came to class was because attendance was mandatory. His tests are ridiculous and I had to fight for my C. Take someone else, even if it's inconvenient.
The professor was a pain. He went on and on about himself. I had to fight for my B even with A's on the exams. Only good thing is the final is optional. Attendance is mandatory. He doesn't have study guides and he won't reply to your emails. I wouldn't take him again.
Flat out not a good teacher. Has pop quizes at "the start of class" which means several minutes before class actually starts and if you walk in and they have already started then you get a 0 on the quiz. He makes up assignments as he goes none of which are specified on the syllabus. 100% of the material is from the textbook: $170 at bookstore
AWFUL!!! Worst teacher ever. I'm in my last semester and I have never had a teacher as bad as he is. is not helpful; my group had to email him 10 times before he actually responded and had to beg him to meet with us outside of class. tests are ridiculously hard, no outlines are given. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
I TOTALLY REGRET TAKING THIS COURSE. This teacher only talks about himself, how many cars he has, how much money he has yadda yadda yadda. His class is a complete waste of time, unfortunately it's mandatory. Also, he takes roll at 8:58, if you walk in at 9 (when class starts) and you missed your name, then it's a absence. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Everyone saying his class was impossible must not have tried one bit. Sometimes he takes a while to respond, but once he responded to one of my groups emails he responded quickly to the rest. He offers no study guide for his tests, but he uses test bank questions. So if you read the book AT ALL you could do just fine on the tests.
I love this guy. He's a comedian/entertainer/teacher. Always keeps class fun and is super chill. I have no idea why everyone is on this guys case.
He knows what he is talking about. He is really straight forward with expectations and realistic with students about how to get a grade they want. He is funny in class and wants everyone to succeed. Great Guy. You will get the grade you deserve, not the grade you think you should get. I just think some people have a hard time understanding that.
This class was a breeze and the Professor is first rate. I learned a lot in this class.
The professor's lectures include his personal history and he sounds like he's bragging but every story has a direct application to the concept being taught. His personality is flamboyant, sarcastic, and fun. His tests are reasonable, no homework, lots of reading, lowest exam score dropped. He gives every chance to succeed. I would take him again.
People my have found him funny/entertaining, I thought he was corny and annoying. He brings up personal stories that I could care less about and just slows down class. He is so strict about attendance to the point where he takes roll 1 min before class and if you're not in you're seat by then, you're absent. But overall, it was a fairly easy class.
Overall I enjoyed taking his class. He's a very funny and personable teacher. He relates all subjects he teaches to personal experiences, which intelligent students appreciate. He is strict on tardiness. He takes roll promptly at the start time and if you come after your name it's as if you never showed. Fun class.
I'm not an amazing student and I did well in this class. He's an easy going guy as long as you put in an effort. I learned a lot in this course and I really enjoyed having him as a professor actually. The comments on here made me nervous for the class, but he was fine. I would take him again
The professor requires you to be in class every day; attendance is mandatory. There's several pop quizzes that he throws out and are very difficult. Exams are difficult and he goes off topic with the lectures a lot. Lots of unnecessary information throughout the entire lecture. You won't learn anything in this class.
easy to pass, only pass with a C. no "+" or "-". lectures are long and irrelevant , talks about himself for the whole period. tests are from test bank 100%
went from a B to a D after group project
Worst teacher I've ever had a CSUS. Only talks about all his money and cars a "expensive" shoes.
Went to office hours, was not helpful. Did not give any explanation for what he wanted for the group project, and then graded hard. He just said he wants "everything" from the text book to show in the group project, and thats all the direction we got. Doesn't teach, just makes us read, and reads power points provided by text book company.
GET THE TEST BANK. The class will be a breeze afterwards! I have never had a prof. be clearer in what he wants in the group projects. It's not the EASIEST class ever, but it is very valuable. Also, he shares his experiences in business, which is what we want, right?! He is a great professor and WILL HELP IF YOU ASK! Never cracked the book... B+
Okay this guy is such a paradox. His lectures, funny and he explains concepts in layman's terms. But not approachable, you're lucky if he even looks at you, and if he does it's a blank stare. Tests do not match the flow of the class, I spent more time deciphering the questions than answering them. just avoid him, there's better options.
I loved Watanabe! He's a really nice person who is always willing to help! Beware of the group project!!!! Not the most fun and takes up a lot of time, but he is really clear and wants you to do well. Funny teacher too! Tests aren't too bad if you read! Attendance counts!!! and Participation!!!!
Prof Watanabe is hilarious, by far one of my favorite professors I've had. I had a 7:30am class and he was always bright awake, lecture is never boring and actually entertaining. His tests are tough but if you persuade enough, he will allow 2 online exams. You need to work/study for the grade you want. I can't wait to take MKTG 124 with him.
Awful. He is very picky for what he wants for his project. That wouldn't be a problem except that he never gives clear direction, and when he does he changes his mind or forgets what he said prior. Very contradictory and disrespectful. All questions I have asked him have been either not answered, completely ignored or met with a blank stare.
As an honor student who has completed 142 units administered by 46 qualified instructors in three separate institutions, I can honestly say that Matt Watanabe has been the worst by far. He constantly changes assignment specifics, expects quality to be at a level unclearly defined, and exercises a total lack of respect towards anyone but himself.
Great professor for a difficult class. No homework, 4 exams and an optional final. Watanabe is a pretty cool professor and will give you 2 online exams if you ask. Online exams were the easiest things I've ever done. He makes lectures interesting and does his best to engage the class. Keep up with the reading and you'll do fine. No + or - grades
He expects you to understand everything after reading the chapter once. he picks his favorites in class and only calls on them, when your grade is based on participation, so its impossible to get your points if your not a favorite. exams are really hard you can know all the terms and still fail. Ask for online exams its your only way of passing.
Writing this review because i do not agree with some of the others. Took his 730 AM Mkt101 class and was quite amused an satisfied with the lectures and over all class. If you read and outline the book like he tells you too and pay attention during lectures this can be an easy A.
Talks and jokes about his life in 90% of the classes, and while this is cool, he doesn't review much material at all. If you have no internet, you will fail.
This class is not difficult to pass. However, be prepared for a group project you will get absolutely no guidelines for. He is extremely specific on "what he wants" for the final project but doesn't give you any structure or help. I was mostly disappointed by his lack of care for students. He clearly does not care to help & is there for a paycheck.
Refers to how challenging the course is and how many students he's failed. However, the exams, homework, and quizzes are online and an easy A. The challenging aspect was trying to understand his instructions (or lack there of) on the group project assignment. Was never clear, VERY condescending, and not at all respectful to students.
Had Watanabe for 124 too. Hw, quizzes, & tests are all online. Takes attendance RIGHT when class starts! Everything is relatively easy until the final project. Guidelines for the project are not clear! He is a VERY tough grader! If I had the chance to re-take the class: I'd participate more, start the project early on, & ask LOTS of questions.
THE BEST MKTG 101 Professor you could ever wish for! His HW in LearnSmart is long because he said it's for familiarization of terms and it's true, it works! Just do the HW, and you will be ready in class. Lectures/Powerpoints are clear. NO books, you just need to listen and take down notes from the lecture. He doesn't give away a copy of the PPT
WORST PROFESSOR Ive ever had. He acts one way in front of the class but is super rude one on one. He's not clear on his grading. My group did a fair job & we got low score throughout our whole project. He made us think he just had something against us. Other groups put in work just as we did & received better grades. Just hope your on his good side
Awful. Awful. Awful. Homework would take 3-4 hours and lectures were crap. He would only talk about how he loves McDonalds and shoes. He told me I participated several times, but some how I got 70%. I aced every test, but dont take him. Its a bummer because he seems super cool in class.
attendance is mandatory. lectures aren't very effective, you have to basically teach yourself the material. prof also went off topic A LOT in class.
Had him once a week for a 3 Hr class. Always got out early. He is hilarious and knowledgeable of his field. All the readings are done in the Mcgraw connect and there are quizzes online every week. Expect two of the four exams to be online too! Really not a hard class if you start the project early, ask questions about it and participate in class.
Everyone keeps saying that the group project is unclear but I found that it wasnt too difficult. A lot of people over thought it and made it too complex. Professor Watanabe was fun but he would talk a lot about his life instead of going through the lecture. All tests are online. Homework is online.
Wattanabe is not a bad guy, but he is very annoying and not a good teacher. He makes a lot of very dumb jokes that nobody laughs at, instead of teaching the material. The assignments and exams are all on McGrawhill connect and are easy on their own. He also gives a final group project which he grades very harsh with very little guidance.
I can honestly say that this ended up being one of my favorite classes to attend. Professor Watanabe is funny, kind and a really great person. He's inspirational. The group project was pretty intense so the only advice I have is to pick your team carefully. Other than that, everything else was awesome!
I was unsure about Professor Watanabe at first but by the end of the semester I really appreciated him as a professor. His teaching is different and unique compared to other professors on campus. This class seemed to focus more on our group project/paper more than what was in the book. 5 exams (online, drops the lowest), HW and quizzes (online).
I really wanted to like this professor, given other positive reviews. HW and quizzes all on Connect which are easy. Group project was a pain. Gives terrible feedback and if you want to meet with him, expect your entire group to be there; otherwise forget it. He makes you feel incompetent. Same thing for MKTG 125. So sorry if you have no choice.
Class setup on Canvas is unorganized... Don't bother trying to ask him questions. He is rude and condescending, even though he claims to be accessible. He does seem like he wants to help. The material isn't that difficult, but having a teacher who cared would help.
Take someone else. People like this should not be teachers
This class was very easy to take, just make sure you complete the assignments given, which are only 2 hw assignments and 2 quizzes a week, and it is a passable class. Everything you learn in the modules will be used on quizzes, the exams are kind of difficult. Online textbook and weekly discussions, must reply to discussions too.
This professor does not share slides, give extra credit and lectures too fast. I honestly struggled to pass this class. He was generous to give our class extra credit given feedback by a classmate. To be honest, I learned more about his life than Advertising. My advice: constantly give him feedback. Despite all this, he cares about your education.
He makes a student's life very uncomfortable and stressful with his 'communist' rules and makes students feel dumb... Hopefully, Sac State has other marketing teachers!
I personally really loved Prof Watanabe. He gives really good advice outside class and knows what he's talking about however exams can be difficult. He usually has a group project in all classes and they aren't hard, but your group can make it harder than needed. His lectures are good and funny but can be pretty broad. Study the chapters he assigns
Really knowledgeable about the field. His lectures are funny, don't be afraid to engage with him because he'll love it. His classes are usually taught seminar style so when the class responds to him, he's in a much happier mood. His tests can be quite difficult so make sure you actually study the chapters he assigns outside of class.
Do not take his class! He likes to make students feel stupid. His lectures are confusing almost as if his purpose is to confuse rather than teach, borders on condescending most of the time. If another marketing professor is available take their class instead.
Very helpful and gives clear lectures. Definitely recommend going to his office hours if you need more clarification on the chapters and on the marketing project thats due at the end of the semester, he does put in his time to help you. Highly recommend
Please take this class with another professor. He talks about his family more than marketing. Doesn't give out lecture slides, group project/presentation guidelines, or study guides. And he wonders why his students have low exam scores. Has high ego and doesn't answer emails. Literally the worst.
mid semester he gave us a study guide but refused to give us a study guide for the exam after that because the class still failed. talks a lot about his son and his rich friends but fails to even enrich students with the lectures. a lot of the exam answers are in the book, good luck remembering the content tho 4 chs each exam. drops the lowest exam
Gave us nothing for exams, projects, and assignments, but expected the most. Was very vague on lectures. Never responded to emails. Had a huge ego. I knew more about his family than marketing. Please do not take this professor.
Grades off of favoritism. He gave me a low participation score and gave others a higher grade when they barely spoke a word in the class. Also uptight about attendance
Never gives lecture slides and goes super fast. He always said "You should be teaching yourselves, technically I don't need to be here." Then why are you a college professor? My advice: Take another professor and save your mental health from this man.
"Hey Mr George, How much did you pay for the new guy? 20 bucks? No! That's too much!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. you'll regret it. he talks more about his personal life than anything.
Hours of homework per week. Attendance mandatory and taken at the beginning of class 5 difficult exams with no study guides. Semester long project worth 10% with no clear instructions nor grading criteria and you'll LOSE 20% if you don't fulfill his requirements that he never gave you. Avoid unless it's your last choice.
This Professor deducts 40 points per absence & counts you absent if you arrive to class 1 minute late. If you have class at 9am he will take attendance at 8:59am, and deduct 40 points from you if you arrive at 9:01am. Our discord had everyone saying this was the worst professor ever. Only class I have ever failed.
Do not take him! Spends 75% of his time talking about his rich life and friends. Hardly teaches anything. Grades participation points on favoritism. Please do not take him, better take someone else!
I emailed him inquiring about the low participation grade because despite actively participating in every class,I received a lower score than those who spoke once or twice. Unfortunately, he never responded. This lack of professionalism persisted throughout the semester. He was not likable and was only a replacement for a highly rated professor.
I never really write reviews, but this professor is so bad I had to. DONT TAKE THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS. His RMP reviews are true. His exams are hard and outdated, they don't align with the readings or lectures. His also grades participation based on favoritism as others have mentioned. For lectures, he skims through and doesn't even finish the chap.
Initially skeptical due to his gloating and name-dropping, this professor proved better than expected. Though he lectures quickly, making recording helpful, and requires attendance, the take-home exams were based on homework. The group project was simple, making the class less daunting than the reviews suggested.
The MKTG dept at SS has few professors that are avg. This is one of them. Compared to the other prof. this is the best SS offers. His directions are not clear all the time, but he allows students to improve their work based off his feedback. 1-group project :60 commercial w/presentation.
Terrible professor, doesn't check his emails. Even though I participated in class a lot, he still gave me a low score. Not only that, but the project has no real outlines.
Terrible professor. No clear instructions for project or test.
Professor goes off tangent a lot. Class material was through McGraw Hill and that's it. No other useful modules and no study guides. Exams were 5-6 chapters worth of material each which is really dense, you basically just teach yourself and have to do it all before he lectures. One group project as well with not the best instructions.
Terrible professor, due to the underlying fact that he has no clear instructions for anything. Quite literally!
10 seconds late, he counted me absent! Super ridiculous, he'a alway out of topic. For the attendance, beware! Cause he will deducted 40 pts everytime you absent. I received a NEGATIVE 80/0 for (out of 0 pts possible) from passing to not passing!
Relies heavy on book slides. Does provide good real life examples however they are a bit outdated. 1 big project for the semester with unclear guidelines. He grades the project based on his POV. No real reasons as to why he deduct points. Does not give explanations. His tests are in person w/ no notes or study guide.
One of the worst professors I've had. He's on a power trip and moves through material way too fast. Lectures are mostly personal stories, not useful content. Exams don't match what he teaches, and he shuts down anyone who doesn't say what he wants. Avoid if you actually want to learn.
Matt is a great professor and an even better person. I learned a lot about Retail Management in this class, and the material is explained in a very clear and simple way. If you show up every day, participate in class, read the book, and study, the class is very manageable. Picking a good group also makes a big difference.
