I absolutely loved History of Jazz with Zebley! He loves jazz and everyone in the room can feel it. His lectures were extremely interesting and he brought in some of his jazz combos to perform.
Amazing teacher! I am sad the semester is over and I won't be seeing him Monday & Wednesday mornings. He is really there for his students and does everything in his power to help you get an A in the class - there are always study guides and reviews before the tests, extra credit project is offered. Really really good guy.
There isn't enough that you can say about Dr. Zebley. Great guy, interesting lectures, and just a fun and easy class. Zebley genuinely cares about his students and tries to be as helpful as possible. If you aren't getting an A in his class, you're doing something wrong!
Zebley is a great teacher, clear lectures and writes notes on the board. Read the book, do the quizzes, study for the test and you will do fine in the class.
Dr. Zebleys class is wicked cool! I wish I would have studied more, and overall been more involved in the class. I stuck by doing the bare minimum. He deserved more than that, he cares so much in his students and WANTS you to pass. He really is a Fantastic teacher and a extremely talented musician. Read the chapters go to class and you will be fine
Dr. Zebley was super awesome. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to pass. He makes sure that you understand the music and breaks it down for you. He is a musician who teaches what he loves to do and I think that is the best part of the class. I was allowed to appreciate Jazz on a level I had not previously been able to do.
Dr. Zebley was a gret professor! He genuinly cares about his students and does everything in his power to make sure you pass. Reas the book and do the weekly quizes(open book) and study and you will be fine. He is extreamly passionate about what he does and it shows. Can't recommed him enough!!
Best professor I've ever taken! Really loves jazz music and makes the class very interesting and fun to be in. Honestly the best professor I've ever had. You just need to show up to class and put the work in.
Professor Zebley made Jazz music accessible even to people who are not musicians (you have to study though). His lectures are fun and well organized. He played music and showed videos. Besides being a teacher he is also an excellent musician, and he invited other musicians to play music in class. He cares about students and he is well respected.
Matt makes music manageable; even for those lacking the musical gene. He is genuinely invested in the subject & is certainly respect in his field. He is superbly pleasant & willing to go out of his way to clarify or assist. Plus, that dude can play!
Dr. Zebley is a very passionate jazz musician who is willing to make the music accessible to everyone. His lectures are thorough, funny, and inspirational. Make sure to not skip class as most of his test questions come from in-class notes. He is also very direct---you will not second question what will be on the exams.
Honestly, I've been racking my brain trying to find a fair criticism for this class and have failed. This teacher lives the passion that he teaches. One of the best classes I have ever taken. Would recommend even if you don't like jazz.
Dr. Zebley was very thorough in all lectures and any type of tutorial. Although he made you think about what you're studying and tries to help you enjoy what you're studying, he does not put emphasis in connecting with students in order to fulfill a more emotional desire for what he is professing. Overall, a great Professor.
Matt is one of the best jazz profesors you'll ever encounter. His contagious love for what he does and constant push to give your best will have you achieveing way more than you ever expected.
Currently taking his online class and it's a HUGE load of homework, writing assignments, listening tests, discussions quizzes every week. The quizzes and tests are very difficult and the online program is difficult to navigate and learn from. Don't take this class unless you want to do a lot of homework and extremely hard tests.
I took his class for my very first year in the college, and I loved it. Usually, everyday he makes us to copy the notes on the board, he shows some movies about the jazz stars like Louis Armstrong and so on. I am very happy to take his course and I think one of the best music professors I have ever taken in my life. You will get an easy A.
Although I am new to jazz theory and improvisation, Dr. Zebley was patient, kind, and inspiring. The class is a lot of work - there are many assignments (at least they are varied) and you are expected to practice and play in class frequently. I definitely came out of the class as a better musician and with a newfound love for jazz. Great teacher!
Online version, so no traditional textbook and lectures, but an entire text and audio library for an amazing study of jazz history. Weekly reading and listening requirements, and almost weekly writing assignments (work, but not overwhelming). Online discussion participation required. Two live performance reports required. Fantastic class!!
I felt like the reading could have been more concise and interesting.
The whole class was very easy and informational, every week there was a writing assignment with either an easy listening test or a 30 question quiz and an easy discussion topic. The class was super easy but I procrastinated every week doing the work last minute which stressed me out. Super easy class as long as you do the work tbh.
Ive taken a lot of online classes and I learned the most in this one by far. Professor Zebley gives great feedback and leaves comments on every assignment, its a fairly easy class as long as you stay on top of your work!
MUSIC-118-Jazz History. Online text. Excellent class - well structured and organized and expectations and grading were very clear. Workload was consistent from week to week. Dr. Zebley is a very good communicator and provides solid feedback, insights and positive reinforcement. I would take another class with Dr. Zebley in a heartbeat!
Dr.Z!!! Omg amazing teacher. I've had him for jazz theory & jazz combos, great class each time. Jazz theory was hard but doable, lots of hard concepts to grasp but interesting and worth it. Combos is the most fun I've ever had at DVC. Fair grader and expects quality, always willing to help get you there too. Totally recommend, favorite music prof!!
One of the best music professors I've had the pleasure of having. Even though this was his first semester teaching music theory and musicianship, the experience was nothing short of amazing. The work load can seem a bit heavy at times, but you can tell its not busy work. Every assignment he gives truly aims to better you as a musician.
Proz. Z makes this course fun and informative. Not only does he make the class engaging and inspirational, but his curriculum is for anyone who has no prior knowledge seeking to learn, theoreticians who want to enhance, and for those who just love knowing what makes music work.
Dr. Zebley is a great professor. He is inspiring and provides a wealth of knowledge to students. I learned a lot in his class and it was one of the best classes I have taken and I have taken many.
The class covers a lot of material, so it takes some effort to learn. But once I got it, I felt I reached some achievements of music. Overall, it was a fun class!
If you're interested in learning about jazz and having a chill class to have that is actually enjoyable then I 100% recommend this. Professor Zebley really teaches the history of jazz in a great way that anyone could easily understand and makes it even fun as you explore the genre with songs from each era.
Class was an easy A. Never listened to jazz before but the stuff we learned and listened to was actually pretty interesting, I have a new profound outlook on the entire genre. Zebley is the man! Take this class.
Dr. Zebley's surely a fabulous prof. Though this is the first time he teaches this course, he truly explain every concept in detail. He always answer our questions and give everyone valuable feedbacks on assignments! 2-3HW/week. He is caring, patient, passionate & considerate. Esp if you're a theory beginner, Dr. Z & this course perfectly suit you!
I've learned music theory before so this course isn't hard at all. Exams are straight-forward; as long as you attended the lectures, the assignments and tests are easy. Dr Zebley is a caring professor, he makes sure we all understand the knowledge, and he go through the assignments and tests after we handed in. Surely an easy A class!
This is quite the catch-22. Walking into this class with no theory knowledge is near impossible , like you WILL NOT get an A. It just isn't possible to grasp these abstract and difficult concepts in a weeks time before hopping to the next one. I will say though, Matt Zebley is the only reason why this class is still worth taking. Amazing professor.
Great Teacher overall. Cares about his students. Did not stress about his class once and genuinely looked forward to his class even if it was online. All work was assigned on Monday and due the next Monday. Really easy to organize my week around it.
I took Professor Zebleys 10-week late start online class, and it was very easy. We had 1 discussion and two quizzes a week, and 1 concert review for the semester. We had three attempts in each quiz, so it was hard to not get 100% on them. Very easy class.
Easy A. We have one discussion and two quizzes every week. Besides, we have two concert review papers for the whole semester. Just complete all the assignments, and you will get A.
Honestly, this class is fun and easy. Highly recommend if you're interested in jazz or if you want a easy A.
Do the weekly discussion and quizzes and you will pass! Easy A if you do the work. Fun class with great supporting material with songs and movies. Would take again!
Professor Zebley is a wonderful instructor. I took the class completely online, and his course is structured in a way that it is very easy to commit an hour to it a week and to complete all the work.
This class was very easy. There is a weekly discussion with a response, reading from the textbook which he provides as a pdf and a quiz. There are two writing assignments and two concert reviews. Everything is easy. highly recommend if you need it as a GE
If you need an easy but rewarding A+ this is the class for you. The workload is very manageable as it is typically just two short quizzes and sometimes a discussion each week you can knock out all in an hour or two max. The only big assignment is (1 or 2) concert reviews of 1000 words. He is a easy grader, and you will learn a lot about jazz.10/10
Professor Matthew Zebley has been a delight to take this semester! I would take his class again! Great well rounded teacher and fair.
Doc. Zebley has been the best musical teacher I have had thus far and plan on keeping in touch with him throughout my musical educational journey. Thanks Doc!
Mr. Zebley is one of the kindest and most caring teachers I have ever met! He tries to make this class as entertaining as possible. We only have 2 "big" papers in one semester. The rest are 2 weekly quizzes and a discussion every Thursday on some entertaining topic. This class is not hard at all, and as long as you read the textbook you will be ok!
Professor Z is AWESOME! He was always willing to stay after class and help students out! This class really helped me learn about music theory! I would absolutely take a class with him again and highly recommend him to all :)
Dr. Z is a great professor! Music theory is a tough subject, so you have to be ready to put in the work, but Dr. Z makes the course fun and straightforward. He stayed behind after most classes to answer questions. He grades very fairly and gives lots of feedback to help you understand the mistakes you made. I highly recommended taking his class.
Professor Zebley is an amazing teacher and he cares a lot about his students. I took jazz 118 online with him and I had a great experience. The course was easy to navigate and the assignments were very interesting and fun.
Great class overall, just do the work, turn it in on time, and you will get the grade you work for. Great professor who actually cares about the material.
Easy A! I didn't learn anything from this class, but I don't care. Easy discussion, quiz, and paper. There are no words that can describe how easy this class is... Just take him!
NOT a fan, if you have other things going on in your life that may be more pressing it clearly does not matter to him. Not one of those understanding type of professors at all, def would not repeat this class especially at a time like this. Wish I had picked differently
I really enjoyed his class. It was one of the easiest online classes to maintain and follow. I like how all of the assignments are consistent and that we have plenty of time to complete them.
Honestly had a blast taking the class and even with some of the more difficult subjects he explains thoroughly and actually cares about the students
The class wasn't bad but I didn't interact with the professor at all. He assigns videos and textbook pages to read and gives easy quizzes on them. The assignments weren't hard but he doesn't take late work for any reason, even excused absences or just a few minutes late. Only take the class if you need it for credit or you really like jazz.
Amazing Professor. Great feedback on assignments!
great professor in regards to how the class was structured. make sure to complete assignments on time, other than that, it's an easy course.
Great professor and follows a clear syllabus. If you really want to learn about jazz this class allows you to do so. Otherwise, this class is an easy A. The online class consists of weekly discussions, reading the online textbook, watching a documentary on jazz, and taking quizzes on them. Pretty straightforward class.
For the online class, there was a decent chunk of homework every week, but I was able to set the time to finish everything. You should pass his class rather easily, especially if you care about what is being taught. I didn't use his help at all, but I'm sure he would be willing to help you!
Clear content and instructions, was flexible and able to meet with me for extra help. Eased my anxiety about the course material, and gave me the tools I needed to succeed.
I already took a music class and I took this class just for fun. This class is not hard at all. It's really fun if you enjoy listening to different types of music. (: If you ever need to take a music class. Take this class. You won't regret it. Really easy, open notes, and fun!
Dr. Zebley is not only an accomplished musician but an excellent professor. He has his Doctorate in Music but does not condescend to his students. He is warm and supportive OR firm and constructive depending on the circumstances. Not an easy class! Be prepared to study & manage your time well! A truly comprehensive study of theory & musicianship!
This class is perfect for anyone looking to get a basic understanding of music and its fundamentals but be ready to work! This isn't an "all work and no play" class but to grasp everything, one will need to set aside time to really work on the given assignments to succeed. Other than that, you'll really enjoy this course with Professor Zebley.
the GOAT
The class isnt hard if you keep up to the simple assignments that are due about once or twice a week. Also, the assignments are due at 9 in the morning so you have time to do some assignments in the morning beforehand. If you do the simple reading which you can use during quizzes, you should easily pass the class! Great teacher and would recommend
They are very clear and helpful when explaining musical concepts. He always works to find a simple explanation for new ideas that relates to what the class has already learned. He helps break down each assignment and concept into simple, easy to follow steps. Overall, a great professor and a great course.
This class was easy all you have to do are 2 concert reports for the semester, 2 quizzes per week, and a discussion. Format of class is very straight forward all homework, ample time to complete assignments.
Dr. Matt Zebley is an outstanding Jazz Studies professor. He has his doctorate AND has a Grammy for his saxophone work. His class is a hybrid model with most of the material clearly outlined online but includes optional (critical in my view) in-person gatherings, with instruments, 1x/week. He gave me a solid blueprint for learning to improvise.
Class is really ez while being enjoyable. Professor Zebley is also chill and easy going. As long as you do your hw, ez A.
I was part of the "Early Start" class for introduction to Jazz. From this class, I'll tell you Matt Zebley is a very caring professor. The class is fun, productive, and stress-free. You are not bombarded with assignments, but you have enough 3 trial quizzes to retain great information on music. I loved this class, wish I can do it all over again
This class is easy as well as informative, Dr. Matt Zebley makes the course really easy to get through and find everything.
This is an easy class but can learn a lot about jazz history. Excellent teacher! Everyone loves him.
He is just awesome! I really enjoyed the course
Professor Zebley gives you Bang for your Buck. He teaches a college level music class. Exceptional content. You will learn music theory, musicianship skills and have fun learning. He is an excellent instructor, and he communicates very well with his students. I will definitely take another class with him. I highly recommend Dr. Zebley. A+
Professor Zebley is an excellent instructor and mentor. He does throw a lot of material your way, but he is readily available on office hours and email to answer any of your questions and to help you along the way. There is a lot of material thrown your way, so you do have to be highly motivated to keep up and do all of the practice and work.
Zebley is a chill teacher who loves the topics he teaches. Weekly quizzes/discussions, no exams, one concert review (1000 words min.). Take this class for an easy A.
Professor Zebley is an amazing professor and any class of his that you take will make you have a different outlook on that topic.
Best Professor in the world.
Professor Zebley is very organized and clear with expectations in the course. His lectures are well prepared and presented at an easy pace, and he stops to check for understanding frequently. Music 122 is a difficult course, and it really helped to have an instructor with such a depth of knowledge and experience.
This professor was not understanding and never responds to emails. Has no empathy and really lacks kindness in regards to their teaching. I was excited to take this class and the teacher really ruined it.
I really enjoyed the material in this class and Professor Zebley's style of teaching. Just make sure you turn in your assignments on time!
I really enjoyed the material and professor Zebley's style of teaching. Just make sure you turn in assignments on time.
Dr. Zebley was a wonderful teacher, and put so much care and effort in making the tough subject of Music theory, approachable and engaging even as a full online course held through zoom sessions.
Professor Zebley is very kind and every week is similar to the previous week which is organized and easy to follow. I had his late start class during the Spring 2022 semester and it did not feel rushed at all. He is super helpful and I would definitely take him again if I had the opportunity :)
I do not recommend him at all.
I'm currently taking Dr. Zebley's class,& he is one of the nicest professors. His class is very straight forward. Assignments open up weekly, they're very easy to do.He is communicative. Do your work by the deadline, you will have no problem Each week you'll have 2 quizzes, & 1 discussion. One 3-4 pg paper due at the end of the semester. Very easy.
Discussion boards weekly, #1: your response early in the week and given a couple days to respond to two students. Then quick weekly quizzes on the reading from that module and a documentary video. You are required to do 2 concert reviews 1000+ words. And tracks given each week to familiarize yourself with different Jazz styles. I loved the class!!
Really easy class as long as you follow the instructions. Easy A!
Really great professor that encourages thinking about the topic! Class is very simple: weekly simple discussion post, reading quiz, and either a documentary video or short paper. Quizzes all have 3 tries each, so it's no sweat. Very kind professor and is a perfect class if you're looking for a fill! Highly recommend this professor and this class
Professor Zebley is great at teaching music theory, and is always available to answer your questions and give feedback. His online course was not difficult, but required a lot of work practicing since it is also teaching musicianship skills.
The lessons were well explained and clear, it was a lot of practicing at home. The professor was always available and encouraged in person check in meetings that helped me clarify questions with the online modules.
Prof. Zebley's History of Jazz was recommended to me by some friends who took band in high school. He is very involved in local music programs! Cool dude. He does not accept late work at all BUT he doesn't assign a ton, & it's based on the reading. I really struggle with time management, and I absolutely had all I needed to get an A in the class!
I took Dr. Zebley's Theory and Musicianship 1 class asynchronously. The course requires a lot of your time and the grading is tough, so you need to make sure you understand the material. His grading criteria is very clear however and he is always available to sit down and help. Very approachable and his passion for music and teaching is evident.
Professor Zebley was a great instructor. Very inspiring course.
no comment
Excellent Professor. Lots of content in his classes, so you will learn a lot. Of course this also means lots of homework! Very fair grading. Be aware that this is not a class for beginners, as you will need to perform the concepts on your instrument.
Easy class
Dr. Zebley taught a great online course that had a very manageable workload and clear direction with short weekly discussions and chapter quizzes. He is very passionate about Jazz and the material was quite interesting!
Incredibly easy, and you learn some cool things
Professor Zebley is caring and helpful. This was an extra credit course. He is resourceful in this learning environment. Informative and professional. If I had the chance to take this course again, I most definitely would.
An excellent professor whom I highly recommend. I have taken two courses taught by him and he is tremendously knowledgeable and passionate about music as well as teaching. Also very accessible and responsive to students. Grading criteria is clear and fair, and as long as one stays on top of the deadlines they can easily do well in this course.
Great instructor! I really feel like he wants us to succeed. The way he presents the information to us and his grading structure makes me feel like he genuinely wants us to learn and do well. For a late-start course, the workload feels appropriate and achievable, not confusing or overwhelming. He loves jazz, and wants to help us to love it too.
Professor Zebley is a great teacher. I would love to take more of his courses. I learned so much in his course and it is all such great material. Thank you Professor!
I took Dr. Zebley's late start (short-term) Music 118 course. The tags are not accurate for a class that will span the length of the full semester, rather if you take this knowing it's a late start class, be ready for some accelerated material. It's definitely not difficult, just requires keeping up the 9 AM cut-offs for assignments.
Great professor! essay class, highly recommended to take
Professor Zebley only assigns interesting assignments and videos, there was no busy work or excessive word counts to follow. I really felt like I could just write what I thought without trying to be someone I'm not. Not only did I learn about the history of jazz, I got to see elements of life and how they tie-in to elements of jazz.
Yes this class is an easy A. I took his 8-week course and it was extremely manageable. Easy way to get more credits in a short amount of time. Mainly just do discussions and quizzes, with no time limit and 3 attempts. Discussions are short between 50-100 words. We had two writing assignments but they were super easy.
He was very knowledgable and inspirational. I enjoyed the class and learned so much about Jazz.
Not quite understanding about emergency situations, therefore be prepared to hear a blatant "no" regardless of your circumstance [as he states exactly]- including medical emergencies with doctor's notes. A lot of videos to watch/listen to following with minimum four pop quizzes each. I'd prefer if he lectured more than just assigning videos/quizzes
This professor does his best to ensure that every student has the opportunity to get a "A" in his class. The material was great and informative. I love jazz now.
Awesome Professor in all honesty. Very understandable. Professor Zebley actually does care about the class. If you do the work on time, its a guaranteed A. However I would suggest professor change the 9 am deadline and maybe change it to 11:59 pm the night before that way we have all day to finish it.
Doesn't ask a lot of you, has one discussion post and 2 short quizzes per week, which are easy if you read the text/watch the videos. The two concert reviews were the longest assignments in the class and were tedious to do since the concerts were an hour minimum. Also, due dates are at 9 AM, which is frustrating. Overall good teacher though. 9/10.
Took Prof Zebley's History of Jazz class asynchronously. As a person who has always been interested in jazz music, the class was very interesting and informative. The material was interesting, and the class itself was not difficult or stressful at all. Highly recommend.
The History of Jazz class was exceptional. The support materials were well-chosen and rich in their detail and scope. Online line class interaction and commentary provided a spectrum of appreciation and opinion on the subject matter. Highly recommended!
very nice and well respected, doesn't take late work or exceptions so turn your stuff in on time
He is a great and he know what he teach. He is respectful and want his student to success.
Great teacher, fun class.
The class I took, music theory 1 and musicianship, was asynchronous online through canvas. The class materials were well organized. The class moved quickly so doing the work was important and there was a lot of work. If you do the work though, your skills will greatly improve. Dr. Z was very responsive if you needed help or had questions.
I took the 8-week class, so as expected everything moves relatively fast. You can expect 4 assignments per week: 1 discussion, 2-3 weekly quizzes, and a few writing assignments. He drops your lowest score for discussion, quizzes, and writing assignments. Expect to dedicate time for about 2 hours per week. Easy class, overall!
He is a good professor. He is strict about his deadline, but you can finish the work easily. With that said, there's 1 discussion, and 2 quizzes per week. There are 3 writing assignments, but for the other 2 writing assignments there's no word count, just answer it. Concert reviews are long, so start them when you can.
He is so slay
he rlly loves jazz and you can learn a lot in this class even with little effort. easy to do well just do the work once a week, unlimited tries on quizzes and discussion posts are straightforward. only thing is he doesn't really accept late work. super fun class and great prof!
The teacher is great but there's just too much material to learn in 1 semester, no matter how how many hours you put in every day. If you don't already have a good grasp of beginning music theory and playing an instrument, you'll get lost, fast. The class should be split into Music Theory and Musicianship 1A and 1B, each 3 units, taken in sequence.
He needs to be more understanding of student's circumstances, especially when there were MULTIPLE comments about how difficult it is to submit assignments. Some of his lectures were confusing to understand because he was saying it in a way we already know the content? (if that makes sense). Overall, I would not take his class again.
W jazz prof
It's his way or the highway. Very rigid and refuses to accommodate students. If you ask him for anything such as an extension he will be extremely passive agressive and rude to you. Overall doesn't really care about his students' success and just wants to act as a roadblock to try and filter out people he doesn't think are cut out for music.
Great jazz professor. I took him for history of Jazz, and really learned a lot. The class mostly consisted of listening to a few jazz tracks every week and a discussion post. Really easy, and found a lot of great new songs.
he is the best teacher
I had this Professor Zebley for a late start course, it was very easy, and he made it easy to actually learn things despite it being an online course. Overall, I definitely recommend this course and professor Zebley for an easy and fun source of credit.
Dr. Zebley is a great professor that is knowledgeable in his field of study; he is very attentive to his students, do the work on time and you will pass his class.
Excellent on line course! Fast paced, but the recorded lectures and homework guidelines are very clear, the increase in difficulty manageable if lots of time are devoted to practice. Interaction between students is encouraged as on line discussions. The final composition project (my first) was a delight to tackle. Please follow up with part 2!
This was an EXTREMELY well organized online course. The teacher was available for feedback. There is zero room for late work. The amount of content in this class is very impressive, but that means you really have to stay on top of it. I loved this class so much that I would take it again and probably learn even more.
Fair and impartial. Knowledgeable in the subject matter. Alot of work but is manageable if you stay committed to the work. Will take another course with this instructor.
This is an excellent class if you are starting out with music theory. Dr. Zebley is thorough, detailed, and very knowledgeable. As with any introduction to an area that is unfamiliar to you you have to do the work to get your footing with new material. Dr. Zebley's in-person and online availability to answer questions is welcome.
Dr. Zebley was super helpful when I ran into some topics that I found super challenging. He provided great feedback and excellent suggestions for support.
His course was hard but hes the best
I enjoyed taking his course. The material was somewhat more entertaining than I anticipated and it wasn't difficult. I do wish he unlocked assignments earlier but as long as you're on top of your assignments you'll be fine.
Dr. Zebley is extremely compassionate and thorough. There is a lot of homework, however Dr. Zebley is very detail oriented and as long as you pay attention to instruction and complete your homework on time you'll do good in the class. I really enjoy his classes and plan on continuing with the series. Great Professor and I highly recommend!
The class was really easy and straightforward but he is really strict about late work and he assigns weird due dates (9 am instead of 11:59 pm). It's not really a big deal but it definitely threw me off a bit. He is also kind of condescending and rude, if you ask for a late work exception he'll respond like you're asking to cuckold him.
I had Zebley for a summer class, the structure gives a balanced workload each week and makes the coursework manageable; 1-2 readings per week, 1-2 short movies, roughly 20 short jazz recordings to listen to each week, with engaging content. The quizzes are open book and 3 tries so there's no way to fail them; very enthusiastic professor+musician
Professor Zebley was awesome. The class was very informative, especially to someone who has no knowledge of jazz history. He is very easy on grading just as long as you turn your assignment on time. 11/10 would take his class again.
I have now taken a class with Dr. Zebley twice, once in person and once online. Both times I thoroughly enjoyed his teaching style as well as the content covered. He has a contagious passion for music and is very transparent with students.
loved the material, course introduced me to some amazing artists, easy class if you do the work. I only regretted taking it with 2 other classes in summer because I wasn't able to give it the complete focus I would have liked since I love Jazz music.
Professor Matt Zebley is praised for his deep knowledge of jazz and his ability to make the subject come alive, creating an enjoyable and inspiring learning experience for his students.
Solid professor. Gives clear feedback. When you submit your work he tells you exactly where you went wrong. The class overall requires attentiveness. Pay attention and engage = good results. It all builds on itself. Also he accepts no late work at all! If you stay on top of things you get good results in the class. Need to engage and learn!
Don't take this class if yall schedule is tight, the guy don't accept any late assignments. Even if you're 3 minutes late, he won't let it slide. The homework is too much, he said "It's college guys" like bro...fym? His canvas assignment submission area is bugged af, can't even submit stuff, he said "Do it earlier then" and im not the only one.
I've finished my musicianship skills test before the deadline, spent all day recording a video, when it was time to submit it, canvas didn't accept it. I reached out to Zebley, he said "contact DVC Help, DVC IT'' He didn't care and gave me a zero. He was like "try to finish it earlier" that really pissed me off, i've finished it before the due.
Dude 90% of his good ratings seem fake af. I took his class, assignment due times are 9am wth? Multiple students complained about having troubles submitting assignments zebley don't care. don't take Music-122 with him, take it with O.Lee instead. Very strict, rude teacher.
I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Zebley's jazz course. He assigns a reasonable number of assignments and quizzes, all of which are manageable. Although the workload is substantial, the assignments are meaningful and do not feel like busy work. Additionally, he grades promptly and is easily accessible.
Dr. Zebley's feedback actually explains what I did incorrectly, which is hard with a concept as finicky as music theory! I don't really get the 9 AM due dates, but it works if you end up working past 12:00! No late work is accepted after the due date! I would take this class again, it helped me a lot with my music projects!
I have taken many online courses, but Professor Zebley's Music Theory 1 course was awesome. It was 100% asynchronous and VERY well organized. Professor Zebley was always available by Zoom or phone call to help. His lectures were funny and engaging, and I really learned a lot from this course.
Took his 8 week History of Jazz course and never appreciated jazz more than I do now. He provides all the readings and documentaries so no need to purchase any textbook. Quizzes are straightforward if you did the two things. Concert review due at the end of the semester but he provides a video concert to watch. Very straightforward.
Where do I start? Mr. Zebley was awesome! One huge takeaway was the music he introduced/reintroduced me to. His assignments were very doable and was never overwhelming. Due dates were very fair even among my other classes.
Professor Zebley is a passionate and knowledgeable instructor who makes the history of jazz engaging and accessible. His lectures are well-structured and filled with great audio examples, The class is manageable as long as you stay on top of the material. Highly recommended for music lovers or anyone fulfilling a GE requirement.
Dr. Zebley's online course includes a recorded lecture with slideware and a musicianship demo video for each module. The videos cover everything, but for a beginner it is a lot of complex concepts to absorb. I would have preferred taking this class in person to see whiteboard illustrations, demoed examples, and more opps to ask questions.
Professor Zebley's class was so awesome! Although it was online, the material was very easy to engage with since its so interesting. The assignments and grading was very laid back, so if you follow the class stream, a good grade is very achievable. If you like jazz, definitely take this class.
The course work is super easy, professor is bad. Make sure to complete everything by deadlines as he will give no chances, I had a family emergency and missed the 9am deadline, he replied with no sympathy and gave zeros. Can tell he doesn't really care about the class or students, doesn't lecture- just posts readings and audio to listen to.
Real knowledgable guy who knows all things jazz. Super kind all the times I emailed him, however does not take late work no matter what. All assignments have a 9 am Monday due date which made things a little hard sometimes. Provided interesting material and engaging discussions. I would take again, just beware of his hard deadlines.
Very good professor and course altogether.
Dr. Zebley has helped me find my tune in jazz. The bop, swing, smooth jazz sounds and concerts he provides for lessons are captivating among other things. I appreciate the jazz concerts on campus we had the option of attending for a review was a nice touch this semester. Now that I know they have the events I will attend one soon.
Dr Zebley is awesome. As long as you put in the work, he's always available to guide and help you.
loved this course, I learned too many things without stressing myself. it is an interesting course
Dr. Zebley grades our assignments very carefully, and when we get an answer wrong, he doesn't get angry with us, he simply leaves us comments politely telling us how to do it correctly.
Professor Zebley is very passionate about jazz, its history and how important it is to share that with others. No matter the background or experience level, the contents of this class & the discussions we had about the materials amongst each other sparked interest in everyone. This class inspired me to try to find a way to learn saxophone again!
He's really caring and understanding and I like his teaching style!
He was super nice and in this course he gives about 3 assignments a week and they're very easy. There's a lot of quizzes throughout the semester but they're easier because he offers three attempts per quiz. Professor Zebley was awesome and cared about his students passing his class. This class is easy A as long as you just do your work on time.
Literally impossible to get anything other than an A with even minimal effort. Very nice man and is a teacher who cares about his class.
Super nice guy, very chill class with three very manageable assignments per week. Can't not get an A in this class but be aware he does not take late work. Highly highly recommend taking a class with him!!!
cool guy, loves jazz! definitely take this class if you're interested in the history of jazz. very accessible course and you get to listen to a lot of music.
I would recommend spending as much time as possible doing the non-mandatory work he gives, so as to not fall behind when it comes to tests. When I asked for help or clarification, he just repeated what was said in the lessons instead of reiterating, so I had to look to youtube for a lot of the lessons. He is respectful, but very straight forward.
Dr. Zebley is a very cool and extremely knowledgeable professor. His teaching and demonstrations bring the material to life, making theory and musicianship much easier to understand. He is also very accessible outside of class. This course exceeded my expectations. I only wish Dr. Zebley were teaching online Theory II as well.
thank you !! class was a 10/10!!!!! -Lauren e.
Really chill professor with every week having the same timeline. You have to write 2 "essay" based on concerts but they can be online. Goated class and really is a good professor take him if u can. One discussion post and 1-2 quizzes every week. Drops one of each too so do not stress.
