Dr. Broccio is a nice guy and cares about his students. Although his exams were difficult, he gave 9% extra credit and a 3-4% curve was applied at the end. If you put the work in the course, you should be able to get a good grade.
Very entertaining lecturer, who made a potentially dry subject interesting. Great use of demos. His lecture notes are so clear that you do not need to read the textbook.
Broccio gets a bad rap. He has an accent but it's not strong. People who blow off his class fail. Period. Do your homework. Read the book. For goodness sake, go to lecture. He explains things really well but rushes through examples. There is like 15% extra credit & points for online homework. Exams are tough but he curves at the end. Worksuccess
Broccio rushes through examples in class so it is important to read the book and complete the book problems. His tests are extremely difficult but he offers a good amount of extra credit and homework assignments that should help.
I'm not just saying this because I have terrible grade, Broccio is the worst professor I have ever had in my entire academic career. The man is so condescending--in his mind, he can do no wrong. He claims the homework assignments "are great practice for exams," while there is absolutely no relationship between the two. Avoid him at all costs
This was a very difficult class. Lectures were not very helpful. He spent his time on easy examples and breezed through the difficult ones. Recitation work was extremely difficult and not helpful at all. Tests were only 15 questions and very hard.
This is a very difficult course and Broccio is awful. I might feel badly about this review if he was not so rude to his students, on top of being a poor teacher. I have never felt more unprepared for exams. The homework is easy and the examples in class are easy but the tests are impossible. Not to mention the recitation is a complete waste.
physics is a tough subject it'll be a lot of work to do well. Lectures need work more conceptual explaining would be nice instead of just examples with more than half the class not knowing the concepts. Tests are 15 multiple choice so theres little room for error. Read chapters before lecture and do alot of book problems outside of hw. Ec is a must
Matteo Broccio is as good a physics professor as you'll find at Pitt. He's a lecturer, not a researcher, so his job is to find ways to make the students' learning experience more effective. And no matter what other people might say, his class is fine. Also, GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! HE IS EXTREMELY HELPFUL AND CLEAR IN HIS OFFICE HOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i originally hated Dr. Broccio and thought I was destined to fail his class after bombing the first exam. Fortunately, he provides a lot of ways to earn points. I never got higher than a C on the 3 midtermsfinal but ended up with a B in the class because of extra credit. You definitely need to put in effort to understand the concepts.
While Dr. Broccio may not be the most helpful during office hours, his class is structured fairly (C+B- point set at 78% and he offers up to 8% extra credit that helps you learn the material). He honestly is one of the better physics professors at Pitt and speaks good English. If you can master the online HW, you can do well on the exams.
Physics is tough no matter what, but Dr. Broccio makes it as painless as possible. Overall you can earn up to 8% of the course grade in EC so DO THE EXTRA CREDIT even if you don't think you'll need it. He really doesn't try to trick you but you need to put in a lot of work to do well on tests, the optional review problems he assigns are key.
Broccio was a pretty decent teacher overall. Although he rushes through some examples and is a little disorganized at times he makes it clear that he's there to help. Test were fairly difficult, but he was pretty fair in what was expected from us. No real curve balls. I'm telling you now unless you get A's on everything do the extra credit
Lecture is a little confusing but he posts his slides WITH annotations on courseweb. Tests were just like the practice prob sets handed out as review which totally SAVED my grade. He also offered PEC labs and clicker ?'s as extra credit. He knew everyone's name by the end of the semester which shows his care and dedication to his students' success
Dr. Broccio TA'dled recitations for my physics 2 class. While this is little to go off of, Dr. Broccio was GREAT. Hysterical, learned everyone's names, and definitely had a passion for teaching. Also went out of his way to accommodate and even sent us a review via email, despite the fact he's not the professor.
It seems like he enjoys teaching and tries hard to get participation in class. His tests aren't meant to trick you, but you need to do a lot of review- the annotated lecture notes are posted online and reading the book helped me with the concepts. Very considerate and tries to help students!
Never got above a B- on an exam, bombed the final, but ended up with an A-. DO ALL OF THE EXTRA CREDIT, and do recitation, homework, class questions, etc. to the best of your ability. Hated physics but enjoyed having Professor Broccio. Nice guy, gets to know students well, and is a very fair grader.
The extra credit is the only reason why I got a B in this class. His conceptual multiple choice questions are tough and made me realize how little physics I actually know. His tests are 12 multiple choice (6 pts each) and 1 open ended (28 pts). He is very approachable for extra help and made physics as enjoyable as it could have been for me.
Professor Broccio is an awesome guy! I highly recommend taking him. He explains topics well and is really helpful in office hours. His tests are fair, but I really struggled in this class andI got a C, and 3 D's on his tests and ended up with a B in the class. Make sure you do EVERY extra credit there is available it will help you out tremendously.
A great professor despite difficult material. Very understanding and offers extra credit via labs, participation and surveys. Exams are multiple choice questions and one short answer. Multiple choice can kill. All in all, he's a great guy and tries hard to keep his students interested and with good enough grades.
Broccio's class is one that makes receiving an 'A' very achievable. Things that make the 'A' achievable: around 7% extra credit can be earned and very typical physics questions can be found on the tests which could be answered with common phsyics knowledge attained from either lectures or the textbook. Overall, I recommend his class for Physics0110
He is very helpful and you can really do well in the class. I got a B- on one exam but still ended up with an A+ in the course due to his weighting. He explains concepts well (except was a bit rushed towards the end of the semester) and the exam questions are very fair.
Dr. Broccio is a really great guy. It's flipped classroom so don't let yourself fall behind bc lectures are not all that helpful. Tests are 2 open ended (generous partial credit) and multiple choice. The conceptual multiple choice is tough so be ready to put in the time. Lots of extra credit. A is very doable if you put in the work.
Broccio is nice but an awful teacher. Exams are extremely difficult, average on final was 62%. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT LABS. I didn't learn anything with Broccio. His multiple choice conceptual exam questions are ridiculous. Office hours are a disaster because he just rambles. If you can take someone else I would.
Broccio is a great teacher! He also offers a lot of extra credit through labs and surveys, which can really help with your grade.
His class is tough but he gives close to 7% extra credit that helps you tremendously. So do every single one. He doesn't lecture in class. He post videos on topics that will be discussed that week online. You must watch it and take the checkpoint quiz before the first class of that week. Group problem in recitation. And clicker questions in class
broccio is a great physics professor. tests are fair and he prepares you for them. the extra credit is pretty easy and is a great grade booster. the book problems are great for studying before tests.
He is a good professor. "Flipped" format includes online lectures with the bulk of the material--clear and allow you to go back to clarify what you don't understand. Problems in in-class meetings were helpful, and the in-class activities were interesting. Overall, he gets his point across and does a good job. I went from clueless to an A student
Broccio was an utter disappointment across the board. Minimal teaching ability (or effort, take your pick) and often a condescending, rude demeanor. Everything I learned in this class beyond week 3-4 was self taught. I don't even bother going to lecture any more, it's a waste of time. You can do fine in the course, just be ready to teach yourself.
Nice professor and teaches well. Rambles on about unimportant concepts a little too much. You have to teach yourself because of this. Helpful in office hours but can be rude and condescending. Provides extra credit. 3 tests that are hard, ESPECIALLY THE FINAL (average for us was a 57). Physics department likes to keep a C average.
Dr. Broccio was fair. The grading is clear and for the most part the test are fair as well. However, he makes the class median grade a B+, so if you're class median is high - like mine was you end up with no curve in the class, which sucks. Offers like 7% extra credit though, do all of it! it will save you!
Broccio really cares about his students and wants them to do well. His exams are not bad, but with each multiple choice being 6% of your grade, it is hard to do really well. He gives a lot of extra credit so as long as you are at or above the average you will get a B or better. Do ALL the extra credit labs and do ALL the online hw! Final was HARD!
This class was a struggle for me but I think it was due to the material rather than the professor. Physics is just a hard concept to grasp if your mind doesn't work that way. I appreciated that Broccio taught my recitation and he knew everyone's name in lecture which really showed that he cared about his students. He is funny and seems passionate.
I self taught the class through Clutchprep. It saved my grade. Lectures were useless (this was the not-flipped ver). Exams were fair; final will be harder. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT (7%). I found the homework and lecture useless; I worked off of Clutchprep and the lecture notes. His concept and math questions reflect the exam; not the other hw
Broccio did a flipped classroom so there was a lot of work outside of class but he let you skip Friday classes. Lots of extra credit offered and recitation helps your grade. Exams aren't too bad but 10 multiple choice are worth 60% of your grade so if you miss 2, you're already at an 88. Take someone else if someone better's available.
Broccio's class is taught in a flipped format classroom and it personally did not benefit my learning; I felt as if I was scrambling to get the videos and video modules done instead of really digesting the information. Gives a ton of extra credit and opportunity to do good. Exams are very conceptual, fair, but difficult (especially the final).
His lectures were useful and informative, as were his examples. He also gave extra credit (highly recommended). On the flip side he sometimes ran out of time to give lecture and had to post videos online. He is also a terrible test giver, as something went wrong during every test, whether a question without an answer, or pages in the wrong order.
Bottom line is physics is a tough class, but Broccio takes a serious effort to make it both interesting and passable. He offers literally 5.5% extra credit, that takes a B to an A-! He cares a lot about students, and will help them if they have questions. The class is hard, the teacher is great. Be prepared to work hard, but you'll do fine
Dr. Broccio was one of my favorite professors I've had so far at Pitt. He's a really nice guy and always tried to make lectures entertaining. Probably the funniest professor I've had. He wants to see his students do well and is very willing to help. I was disappointed I couldn't get him again for physics 2. I'd recommend him to anyone.
OH MY GOSH. never met such a rude professor in my whole life. I tried to talk to him about my problems in life and stuffs, he said do not talk to me about anything not related to physics. Moreover, extremely unhelpful. Rude. He always make us feel stupid because we fail to understand basic physics theories. It's a hard subject anyway.
Took him for Physics 1 in a flipped format. Great guy, funny but can get disappointed if no one answers his questions in class. Tests are easy if you know your stuff, especially if you've taken any high school physics. Gives so much extra credit if you even need it.
I took him the first time he tried a flipped classroom, and my GOD it was like a slow motion train wreck. If he says he hasn't taught your specific class as flipped yet, DO NOT TAKE THAT CLASS. He couldn't really decide whether he wanted to actually lecture or do problems, so we got a half-lecture and like 3 problems done. Has potential to be good.
Broccio is probably the best intro physics professor at pitt. His tests are tricky but there are lots of opportunities to improve your grade. His flipped format style requires a lot of extra work but it makes the class much easier to understand. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT LABS
A lot of buffer points are available, but it forces you to do well in EVERYTHING for an A. For the flipped format, the videos often aren't enough to figure out the homework on your own and he can be pretty condescending over email when you ask questions. His tests aren't terrible; generally you've seen the same types of problems before in hw.
Broccio is the best! He really wants all his students to do well and gives you a lot of opportunities to boost your grade. But you do need to work for your grade. Do the extra credit labs, textbook problems and really try to understand the concepts. Honestly, the best physics 1 professor here at Pitt.
He is horrible. Very rude and condescending. Horrible professor even though he is funny. I did not enjoy his class and did not learn. His exams are really hard. Only 8 multiple choice questions and each was 6 points. You get two wrong and already down to a B
I did not enjoy the class whatsoever. Rude. Mean. Says that you do not know anything. I have never felt this less confident in myself.
Bonjour! Physics 1 with Dr. Broccio was by no means an easy class, but if you put in the work you will be fine. Dr. Broccio's exams are hard but he is an incredibly fair grader and the tests are definitely doable. MC is the worst part. Dr. Broccio is a nice prof and hilarious and definitely listens to to the class' wants. Take! Arrivederci! :)
Dr. Broccio knew everyone in my 300 person lecture by name. Very friendly, very funny, but I would not recommend taking him for college physics if you haven't taken it yet in high school!
CHEGG CHEGG CHEGG. Pay that 15$ because that's the only way to get 100s on HW. I got 74, 68.5, 64 on the exams and a 57 on the final and got a B in the class. Do all the extra credit. Broccio is an amazing man, not the best professor but truly does care.
great guy, teaches you well. hard exams
Don't expect to learn a lot in lecture because he gets very distracted and relies heavily on his video modules which are helpful enough. Get to know him, he's a silly dude who does enjoy helping his students. Thank you for your kind attention
DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!!! I personally hated the flipped class room style, but it was useful since his lectures were not very thorough. If you like the flipped classroom this will be the class for you. He relies heavily on the online homework system and modulus. Exams are tough but he curves (he claims he wont)
First, don't take physics unless it's required for your major. If you just need to fulfill a science gen ed requirement, PICK SOMETHING ELSE. If you really do have to take physics, take it from someone else. If you do take this class, DON'T buy the textbook and DO get a Chegg subscription instead. It will help you with concepts and homework.
He will make you work for your grade, but he is very fair. He lectures through clear videos on the basic concepts and gives examples and problems for you to apply the concepts in class.
Is a fair teacher when it comes to short answer/time/extra credit, BUT has extremely unfair exam multiple choice questions that are very hard and do not always relate to his lectures. lecturing is horrible. Followed his exact directions for studying/read book/did book problems and still didnt do well on multiple choice. DO NOT TAKE HIM, better ones
Physics is a hard class, but Broccio gives you the tools to succeed, class average was a 78, and he made a C- a 54 . The flipped format is a lot of work, and can be confusing, but if you put in the work, you will be fine. Definitely get Chegg. He is a very generous grader on open-ended questions. Final is VERY conceptual, study the in class stuff!
Mateo is one of the nicest, most generous professors at Pitt. TBH, physics is hard so does it really matter who your professor is? His class was hard but his extra credit, homeworks, and in-class problems truly do raise your grade.
The flipped format is a lot of work. Having never taken physics before, I struggled a lot with the exams. But, Broccio offers a ton of extra credit. Overall, I would recommend.
Physics is the hardest class I've taken yet at Pitt but Broccio is such a nice guy and very willing to curve and help you out as much as possible. The UTA help sessions literally saved my grade, I am so thankful for them they're the reason I did so well, if you want to do well go to them for help and talk to Broccio, he's so nice.
Tries to give you as much extra-credit as possible, however, his lectures can get off topic quite easily. Make sure to pay attention in lectures because a lot of the test problems are examples similar to those he goes over in class. He puts up a lot of opportunities to grade with weekly assessments in recitation and online homework due every week
Dr. Broccio is a good man. I am still not sure how I felt about his flipped classroom setup, and the split lecture classes, but he really is a nice guy. Midterm exams were pretty fair, but some of the MC were tough. The final exam was a mess, but he's apparently offsetting some of the madness with extra credit.
This dude means well, but I really don't know about his teaching ability. Flipped format didn't do great things for me. Everyone smart gets an A in physics 1 and what he gave us, I really couldn't work with. Gonna take him for 2 also, so let's see how it works out. Very mediocre so far, I would recommend Dr. Goode or someone similar
Definitely take Physics of Human body with Broccio. All those Physics 1 concepts that you thought were stupid get real applications to the human body. His lectures were engaging and funny. Broccio is also really caring and gave out donuts in class one of the days. Interesting class with good professor.
Physics was one of the hardest classes I've taken at Pitt but Dr. Broccio offers so much extra credit, it's almost impossible not to pass. His flipped classroom wasn't the best but he was very fair on his exams. But, he is such a nice person, you can't hate him. But beware, be ready to work for your grade.
Nice guy, has good intentions, however not the greatest teacher. I wouldnt recommend taking his class unless youve taken physics before. The curriculum is pretty much the same as AP physics (mechanics part). Also this is a flipped class so if thats not your thing definitely dont take this class.
He explains questions 10 times but does the work so fast you can't process it.
DR BROCCIO IS A GREAT GUY, BUT HIS CLASS IS REALLY TOUGH. HE HAS A FLIPPED CLASSROOM STYLE AND IT IS DISORGANIZED. HE INTERRUPTS EXAMS A LOT AND HAS WAY TOO MUCH HOMEWORK THAT IS WORTH A MINIMAL GRADE
Nice man, accessible outside class. He makes you work for your grade though.
Amazing teacher, I had him for both semesters of physics and really enjoyed it. If you do all of the reading, take good notes on the flipped-class videos and textbook (there are times when you're supposed to read it- PLS do it), and do the practice sets, you'll def be able to understand what's going on. You do need to put work in tho. Love this man
Physics 2 sucks & he doesn't make it better.
Broccio is a character. He uses a flipped classroom and makes you learn the material through videos at home. His exams are pretty short but difficult and he tends to ramble on about stuff that doesn't matter. A difficult class but he is really funny which made it bareable. This is a hard class no matter what, might as well have a good time!
Overcomplicates everything. If you are planning to take this class with minimal prior knowledge to physics, I do not recommend Broccio. He'll leave you more confused than when you came in. Do yourself a favor, pick a different prof.
His class is taught in a flipped-format, which is a royal pain. He is such a nice guy that it makes it hard to have a distaste for him, but he is not at all a good teacher. Be prepared to teach yourself the material and you won't be let down. He can teach well in 1 on 1 settings, but as a lecturer he makes no sense. He is almost too smart to teach.
Broccio has a flipped lecture which means that he sends you video lectures where you learn the material and he does practice problems and answers question in lecture. I originally thought that this was a fantastic idea until I actually experienced it firsthand. The video lectures are pretty vague but his examples and exams are hard.
His flipped classroom would be nice if the videos were full lectures, but 5 minutes per topic isn't enough. In-class practice not useful since they're more complicated and he over-explains to the point of confusion. Lots of exam partial credit, but question lengths can be sketchy with given time. Don't recommend if you don't have physics experience
Prof. Broccio is not a terrible professor, but his lectures become extremely pointless when he spends an hour on minor details. His tests are very difficult and time consuming. Although the tests are hard, quizzes & homework make it hard to fail the course. If want higher than a B in physics, do not take Broccio.
Physics 1: The tests are extremely hard to do well on. Each missed multiple choice drops you 6%. However, I thought I was going to fail the class and ended up with a B-. The homework and recitation grades saved me. Lectures are often pointless, but not torturous to sit through. He is a super nice guy and cares a lot about his students.
Overall, not a bad Professor. His material can become confusing, especially when he starts to write out problems. He trys to get students to answer the questions he asks but when the class doesnt know, you just sit in silence for a couple of minutes. Tests are pretty heavy on conceptual multiple choice, so make sure you are also reading the book
Broccio for some reason can not teach in class, but he is much better one on one. I learned more from attending his office hours, than attending his lectures. He makes you work for your grade, but is not too unrealistic. He gives so many bonus points and he makes a C- a 60%, so it is not hard to pass his class.
Overall I loved Broccio. Sometimes his lectures could get a little confusing, but as long as you put in the work (read the book if you're lost, do online homework, show up to recitation) you should do well. He graded very generously, especially on exams. Very nice guy who was always cracking jokes and really wanted his students to succeed!
His homeworks always due at 11:30 am. It is wired, you have to change your calender to remind you finishing it at night before the due date, or you will forget it most time.
He's a funny guy but his lectures are boring and unnecessary but also mandatory because of clicker questions. His exams are hard, but he does scale to help you out. I ended up with an A- which I thought was impossible.
Broccio usually has good examples to help your understanding, but oftentimes goes on a tangent that further confuses you. The "flipped" classroom setting is fine, but the provided videos don't always provide enough information to fully understand concepts. Exams are very fair with partial credit while few MC questions count for almost 1/2 the exam.
If you can take anybody besides Broccio do it. I took him during the pandemic and he is incredibly condescending and will not listen to students when they share why they dont understand but instead will say dumb question. I worked so incredibly hard for zero to show for it. Do not take him he is the worst professor I have had at Pitt.
Matteo is one of the few professors I feel have cared about me. He always adds curves to exams and gives HEAVY partial credit for exams. He also added participation points onto our online assessments since the pandemic which is really nice. I think that Matteo is a solid choice for physics due to all the partial credit you can receive!
This class is tough, make no mistake, but Broccio is funny, caring, & helpful. He gives extra credit and does his best to make sure that everyone understands concepts before moving on. Watch his video lectures- theyre crucial to passing. His exams are hard, but if you study & do the homework youll be fine. Broccio is seriously the best!
Dr. Broccio was a great choice for Phys0174. He is actually a funny guy which lightens the lectures up a lot. The test are difficult but if you understand the concepts behind what is going you will be fine. He is great if you go to him for help but you should have at least some understanding of what is going on before going to office hours.
Broccios lectures are borderline pointless and he does clicker questions so you cant skip. Tests are a little harder than expected, but he adds significant partial credit and bonus to make it fair. Definitely not the best professor Ive had, but not a bad option. Utilize your TA during recitations and take notes on the checkpoint videos.
Dr. Broccio is a funny guy, but he's just not a good professor. His lectures are absolutely pointless and I never learned from them, but he does clicker questions so you can't skip. I ended up always leaving confused, but doing lots of practice before the exams and taking good notes on his video lectures helped me to do well.
Very caring professor. His lectures aren't the best but reading the textbook really helps. Exams aren't too difficult and are graded lightly. Lots of bonus points (3.5%).
From what I've heard about the rest of the physics department I think Broccio is definitely the best option. His lectures are pretty boring and some of his wording on multiple choice questions are confusing. Other than that I thought the grading scale was fair and it's definitely possible to do well.
I really liked Dr. Broccio's flipped class and he is a very nice and funny guy. Tests are definitely manageable since he grades on procedure more than final answer. The only thing that broke my heart was that I was about 0.7% away from an A- and he did not round up. I thought all my effort would amount to something. Sad. :'(
I took one of his classes for a ged ed, and honestly, never has a teacher failed me more or made me feel more helpless when it comes to trying to learn/understand the material. I am not the strongest when it comes to math/science, and he is very condensing towards students like such (been to office hours multiple times). Wouldn't recommend him tbh.
Would not recommend this teacher. Not only is he terrible at explaining the material (his lecture slides never make sense), but he is totally condescending. Also, he is very unprofessional. Set up multiple office hour appointments with him, and he either never shows or shows up 30 mins late. Also, wouldn't expect him to email you back fast.
This has been brutal. He might be better in an in-person setting, but online is bad. He never gets through lectures, and what he does get through makes NO sense and is disorganized. Worse, he makes multiple mistakes when making exams that make the questions unanswerable, then sends out corrections and has you do it again. Avoid taking him online.
broccio is a great guy and all but he sucks at teaching the material. his slides make no sense and the lectures drag on doing random examples barely explaining anything and he talks as if everyone already knows what he's talking about
Dr. Broccio uses the flipped lecture format where he posts videos on Panapto that you have to watch before class but you still have to show up to at least 1/3 of Zoom lectures. During the lectures, he spends so much time on complicated examples that I don't understand and don't enhance my learning at all. Be prepared to teach yourself everything.
I made an acc. just for this. I'm a physics person, took 2 yrs of AP C in HS, and this class still confused me. Typos on tests, vague wording on quizzes, terrible lectures, mandatory 1/3 attendance, hiding resources, ghosting students, laborious group wrkshts, flaming students for asking questions. Bail from his class while you still can. Godspeed
Dont take him. He is so disorganized and lazy. He says he will have tests graded by a certain day and ends up finishing them 2 weeks later. Lectures are completely useless, as he just rambles on and doesn't teach well. This is a physics 1 class but expects us to know the topics before learning them. His explanations are meant for physics majors. No
Dr. Broccio is a great guy, but not a great teacher. He taught in a flipped format, which might've been better for me since I found his live lectures to be confusing. He's very good about giving students the benefit of the doubt and he tries to be accommodating for everyone. He tested a lot harder than he taught, be prepared.
Do not take him. Have to watch lecture videoes before class for points. During class he spends all time on 1 example and never finishes his agenda and just skips the material but are still tested on it. Working through examples in class, he only shows an outline of the solution but never the whole thing. Terrible online. made me hate physics
Online flipped classroom was a trainwreck . Exam answer keys are often wrong and you need to point out mistakes in his exam all the time. Confusing grading criteria, rambles often and goes over time. Awful, mandatory lectures, spends whole class on 1 long example. Always says he'll have a certain thing done by a certain date yet it never is.
EXTREMELY disorganized. Syllabus was not edited when he changed aspects of the class, take-home exams were full of mistakes. Video lectures were too basic and zoom classes weren't very helpful. However, Broccio was pretty friendly and accommodating. Grading wasn't too harsh and material wasn't impossible. Just prepare to do some self-teaching.
Talked and changed questions during the exam. Was 10+ minutes late to the final and didn't give extra time. Was unprepared and unorganized for lectures, always went over time but only would get through 2 conceptual examples. Always promised to post extra problems, but never did. Not tech-savvy at all, in class notes were almost impossible to read.
Super disorganized, there was not a single exam that he gave that did not require multiple corrections by him after being released. He regularly forgot to respond to or didn't respond to emails (granted, there are over 200 students in the class). He wasted lecture time regularly. Twice he forgot about students with extended exam time accommodation
Transition to online was less than smooth and the final was rather hard. But, he is very kind and fair! There are lots of points to earn outside exams. He gave us extra credit to make up for errors multiple times. Once gave more time on hw after seeing some people forgot to do it. Lectures are funny and interesting! Overall, an amazing professor!!
Professor Broccio is a really nice guy who is critically unorganized. He literally was writing and editing our final exam while we were taking it. He will grade our tests weeks after taking them and then regrade it several times before being happy with the grades. His lectures are kinda useless but the mandatory video lectures are helpful.
Broccio makes false promises, is unaccountable for himself + extremely apathetic towards students, & sets unclear expectations. The only useful resources were the short video modules he posts & Sapling HW. There is no curve & minimal extra credit. Grades are based on 3 exams & a final, Sapling, video modules, some participation, & recitation.
The transition to online courses is not easy, yet Dr. Broccio handled this semester with a lot of care and flexibility. He provided the resources we needed to succeed and was very generous with our exams and grade breakdown. Im thankful that I had him for this semester of physics!
Dr. Broccio is absolutely a gem of a person, not so much as a teacher. His handwriting is illegible and he is highly unorganized. He would make multiple mistakes on his exams, which was highly distracting. He did do an okay job at buffering against his mistakes with extra-credit. I'd avoid this teacher if possible.
Broccio's class was a roller coaster. Policies were always unclear and he was unnecessarily disrespectful to students. Hard to reach outside of class, always talked during the exams and was super distracting. The transition to online classes would be difficult for anyone but this was exceptionally messy. Final grades were fair but stressful class.
Dr. Broccio was a kind professor, but overall was disorganized in the online format. He changed the grading policy in a very favorable way to us and grades went way up, generally (lowest exam weighted less, final got dropped, attendance and watching videos for 20% of grade). Physics sucks. Dr. Broccio was kinda stressful but was fine in the end.
The class was really unorganized, and the professor was an average to below average explainer in my opinion. He gave a lot of extra free points randomly at the end of the semester though which made which make it a lot easier to get a high grade.
He wasn't that bad. A bit unorganized but it was not hard to get a good grade for his class. He had a flipped classroom which kinda sucked, but the class could have been worse. On a side note, he definitely is a character lol
Dr. Broccio is, in my opinion, not very good at explaining concepts. We have a "flipped" classroom, where we watch lectures (5 or so <10 mins each) then do practice problems in class. We have a test about every 4th week. Attendance is not mandatory but we have graded questions in class.
He has a flipped classroom where you watch videos before class and then he does problems on the concepts in lecture. The videos are helpful but if you are confused with a topic the lectures won't make sense because the problems are conceptual and confusing. We have Sapling almost every week and three exams (one can be dropped) and a final.
Dr. Broccio was a fine professor for Intro Physics 2. The flipped lectures were super manageable and broken into short videos. He goes very slow and makes sure to explain little details. The exam was split into two parts, one of which was take home and allowed collaboration with a group.
Broccio is an okay professor and has the main teaching method of doing one or two extensive practice problems during lectures. Takes awhile to respond or not respond at all to most emails unless you email the TAs first. Watch out for final grades because he makes alot of mistake in gradings, more than I have ever seen for any professors.
Dr. Broccio is a good pick for a physics 1 class. I am not great at physics in general, but he is more lenient and easier than other stem classes I've taken. Provides many resources to be successful. He and his other TAs are available in office hours, which are helpful. Minilectures are used to teach primary material, as it is flipped.
He's a funny guy and a likeable person but he just wasn't good at lecturing. His lectures clarified nothing for me and the online lectures didn't have all the information. I found it hard to remain engaged in the course content even before the class went online. Sweet guy, bad prof.
Has a personality you'll either love or get very annoyed by. I thought he was solid. He presents all of the information you need to succeed in solving math-based problems, but concept-based problems were not handled particularly well. His grading rubric makes it very attainable to get a solid grade though.
He is alright, nothing to boast about. he is funny and tolerant but I learned more from watching youtube than his lectures. attendance once a week was mandatory but I attended all lectures/recitations. not sure if I received proper amount of info to go into phys2 though
Probably as average as its gonna get from physics professors. Lectures seemed all over the place at times, mostly learned from homework and outside sources. Synchronous quiz averages were consistently low but the final grading scale was pretty generous. All in all, not the best but not the worst professor Ive had.
Dr. B is a decent physics teacher, especially considering the other options. You have to watch the lecture videos before class and then during class, he usually went over practice problems. However, you need to attend to get participation points. You do need to study for his exams because they can be challenging but the asynchronous part isn't bad!
If you have an option to take another professor, do it. It's a mess with him. His questions are overly complicated for a simple meaning, keeps interrupting while taking the exam to make significant corrections, exams, homework, and quizzes are unnecessarily hard compared to pre-class videos, and lectures' examples are hard to read and understand.
One of the most chaotic, least prepared, and worst professors I've ever had. He does not teach in class but makes us watch about 2-3 hours worth of videos he's made called "mini-lectures" outside of class every week. In class all we do is conceptual practice, or difficult practice problems which he speeds through. Totally unprepared and unprofessio
really confusing, awful handwriting, and unhelpful and mean when you ask questions. really.
The most unprofessional and chaotic professor I've ever met. He makes more mistakes than I can count so it is impossible to learn. Words cannot explain how confusing and contradicting he is. Do not take him.
I won't deny professor Broccio is pretty disorganized, but he clearly cares about his students. He makes sure you get extra points when things go poorly, and he tries making his classes more interesting by demonstrating concepts that we are learning. Its fine if you don't go to class,I spent more time watching minilectures which was very helpful!
Exams were chaotic-- showed up late to two and interrupted constantly to fix mistakes. However, Broccio created a generous grading scale to account for these hiccups. Mini-lectures were helpful and in class lectures could be more clear, but uploaded slides after class provided additional clarification and help. Clearly cares about students.
Personally, he was a nice guy. Whenever he messed up he acknowledged it and gave us bonus points. Professionally, he was disorganized and confusing. The mini lectures didn't prepare me for the actual test, I felt that they were very surface level whereas the tests were extremely in depth. Get tutoring early on to save your grade, I had to. STUDY
The man was rather disorganized and showed up late to many exams, but he more than made up for it with the generous bonus that he gave us as compensation. The folks being too harsh with him were also the ones who never came to class or had self-responsibility when it comes to learning. This is college, not a daycare. VERY generous curves on exams
Could be disorganized at times, but very lenient with grading (allowed us to drop owest scores for most assignment types). I personally enjoyed the video minilectures, which were clear and helpful to reference. If you are expecting to be spoonfed information in a large college-level class, you need to take some personal accountability.
Good professor and office hours were very helpful. Found this class enjoyable and a good mix between challenging and interesting.
Broccio may be very disorganized, make mistakes on exams, and show up late but he has a good heart and genuinely cares about his students, more than most. He more than makes up for his chaos with bonus points on exams and extra credit. if you watch / understand the lectures and do the hws you'll do well in the course.
Dr. Broccio is probably your best bet for Physics I. The minilectures provide all the information you'll ever need for a topic with examples within minutes. His lectures are pretty chaotic but focus more on conceptual stuff and less on the crazy examples he'll try to work in class. Everyone's hating but he gave us more than enough tools to pass!
Yes, he's chaotic, but he is there for you. He's a great guy and helps his students by providing a litany of resources. Huge amount of extra credit and curves everything more than necessary. People hate on him too much for his misorganization, but put yourself in his situation of teaching a 300 person physics class. He's doing his best:)
Definitely the best for physics 110. He is suuuuuch a fair grader & gives you points for attempted work. Tons of extra credit, bonus points, & lets you drop the lowest scores. His in person lectures may be a little hard to follow but he is always open to questions. Students give him a hard time but physics is difficult regardless of the prof.
Professor Broccio is probably the best choice for Physics 1. He gives partial credit on exams and offered so many opportunities for extra credit. Homework will be a huge grade booster. His exams are fair, yet the material is hard no matter who teaches it. I wish he did more work problem examples in class, rather than conceptual physics examples.
Broccio is definitely one of the most chaotic and disorganized professors Ive ever met, but he definitely cares about your success. He is very approachable- though his explanations can be a little confusing sometimes. He gives you plenty of resources to succeed and a good amount of extra credit, partial credit and bonus points.
somewhat flipped format - you watch lecture videos before class & he does conceptual review and problems in class. his explaining style was confusing to me, so i used the textbook & youtube to learn. he is pretty chaotic tbh. 3 exams (drop 1) & final ++ grade cushion w/ HW, watching lec vids, recitation WS, participation from checking canvas
Had a flipped classroom, so lecture was abt doing problems, which lacked engagement I think due to the class size. It was clear he cared about his students & listened to our feedback/suggestions. Was a bit disorganized at times. Provided lots of opportunities to cushion final grades (extra credit, dropped exams/assignments) which was nice.
Broccio is severely underrated. He is disorganized and his lectures aren't helpful but pre-class minilectures give you all the conceptual knowledge you need for tests, and the homework and practice sets provide enough practice. He does care, and while he's standoffish in his emails he's very nice face-to-face. He curves - class average was 86.
Classes were boring and felt like they added little to the minilectures. He wasn't the best teacher. He made up for being late to exams/lecture with extra credit and nice curves, especially on the final. He seemed nice, but there was a lot of miscommunication. Overall fine.
Dr. Broccio is an amazing professor. His lectures are flipped and the video assignments are clear and very helpful. His lectures... are interesting, I only attend because he is such a fun professor. As long as you do the homework and watch the videos, you will do just fine. His exams are fair, don't listen to the neg reviews from the lazy students
Pros: homework, recitation, EC, and participation about 46% of your grade. Exams are also very doable if you study. And he usually gives free points back if a lot of the class can't figure out the open-ended question Cons: not a great lecturer/explainer Exams: 3 (drop one) + final, 2/3 open ended questions + ~12 mc questions (1/2 grade each)
Very nice, funny guy. I like him as a person but I find his teaching to be very difficult to understand sometimes. Broccio writes out diagrams on the projector that very quickly become a rainbow mess. The open ended sections of the exams are very doable but the multiple choice is insane... he gives bonus points for nothing though. Wants you to win.
Nice guy, exams are easier than other professor's, ready to extend exam/assignment deadlines and responds to emails. Expects you to learn everything from the textbook and only does long form example problems during lectures. Goes through chapters slowly, be ready to cram towards the end. I only passed because of Dr. Nero's videos.
Dr. Broccio is a solid option for Physics, but a very boring lecturer! Has trouble with online teaching and format of the Canvas is very confusing. Gives lots of points on exams and recitations are very easy. Don't bother attending in person lecture since he will only confuse you more.
Broccio isn't the best, but definitely not the worst option for Physics. TERRIBLE lecturer and not great at online teaching, but the exams are doable and there are alot of grades that go into the final, grade - not just your exams! Do the homework and watch the minilectures and you'll be good!
Not only was Dr. Broccio incredibly inconsiderate to students who were going through rough times, he was also utterly disorganized and never took responsibility for it. Less than 24hrs before our final exam, he changed the contents of the exam (after saying it was not subject to changes) to include more modules. would not recommend
Lectures were not very helpful and the class was extremely unorganized. Practice exams and keys were posted late and he did not post a lot of material that he said he would.
Honestly, not sure why the ratings are so bad. Broccio's class is extremely easy if you do all his practice questions so it's very doable to do well in his class. Each exam is worth only about 18% (there are 3), and the rest is HW, recitation quizzes (pretty easy), and Canvas videos. You can also drop an exam.
The most disorganized professor I have ever had. You think that wont matter, but it does. He wouldnt release recitation assignments on Canvas (12% of grade), released homework a few days before due (18% of grade) and showed up to exams 20-30 minutes late. Will not respond to emails. You wont know when the exam is until the week bcs he changes it
The most disorganized man ever. He never has anything graded, changes due dates and exam dates weekly and would get mad when people called him out on it. Showed up 15 minutes late to our final and class often. His lectures are irrelevant. He is a pretty easy grader and it's not hard to do okay in his class. He just does not have it together at all.
Broccio is very disorganized and last-minute. I would not recommend him as your recitation instructor because he came up with the recitation quiz questions on the spot and made it difficult to get full points. His lectures are not helpful so barely anyone shows up. Get ready to teach yourself using his pre-recorded videos.
Class was very easy overall, but the professor didn't help much. I only attended one lecture because many of his explanations just made things more confusing. Prof. overall was very disorganized. Was late to multiple recitations, forgot to post submission links frequently, didn't post test grades until months after, and hard to reach. Not great.
Physics 2 sucked so I won't fault Broccio for the difficulty. But he's extremely disorganized and makes a lot of mistakes when it comes to grading and exams. If you can push past it, he gives a lot of EC, gives points back for each test, and is a genuinely nice prof. The grade weights are also one of the best I've seen for a STEM class at Pitt!
Avoid professor Broccio. He was the most disorganized teacher and you will just get a headache from this class. Very poor communicator and condescending when he had to make accommodations to students. Get ready to learn from the prefecture videos because actual lecture makes no sense. Takes months to grade anything.
Doc Broc was super nice, but his lectures were absolutely awful. They are scattered, disorganized and most of the times just full of equations which he does not explain. Youtube was a lifesaver for this class and if you use it well enough you could probably skip class altogether. The only good thing was that his tests were average difficulty.
Dr. Broc is the most disorganized professor I have ever had. Took weeks to grade exams, forgot to assign hw and would leave us a few days to do it. Never followed the schedule in the syllabus...I could go on and on. We didn't get our final grade in the class untill 2 days after it was due. Also he's just not good at teaching. Avoid at all costs.
Extremely disorganized. Lectures were nearly impossible to follow. Expect to just teach yourself the material. If you have a choice, try someone else.
Honestly, Dr.Broccio is a nice guy and all, but he is extremely disorganized. I feel that his in-person lectures barely helped me understand the content, and I would look for outside sources to help supplement the information. Sometimes the things he would teach would not be representative of the exams.
"Nice guy" but passive aggressive if you call him out for his mistakes or stand up for your grade. Bad at comforting upset students. Broccio never gave grad TAs clear instructions, lecture and Canvas page + announcements were disorganized, exams were interrupted at LEAST 3x for clarification. Only good thing was his grading scheme. Good luck
He isn't a good lecturer. It sounds like he's speaking in run on sentences. I didn't go to class and just read the textbook. He gives VERY generous extra points no assignment he just gives them out.. If you are naturally good at physics he is a good professor to have, but if you struggle in physics courses take Dr. Nero instead. DONT TAKE HATRIDGE.
Mr. Broccio is a nice person, but not at ALL a good professor. He doesn't respond to emails and doesn't post things when he needs to. He doesn't care about the success of his students and just throws stuff at us without any proper preparation. Exams are graded so horribly. Please avoid him if you can- I only took him because he was my only option.
I really liked Dr. Broccio as a person, but I would advise against taking him as a physics prof if you don't already have a good physics background. The class was flipped, but he did not do enough in class. Watch videos and read the book if you take his class. One good thing was he always answered my emails quickly.
I had Dr. Broccio for both physics 1 and 2. I loved him for physics 1 because he seemed to grade fairly and always made up for any mistakes on his part (whether it was typos on or tardiness to exams). However, for physics 2 he did not appear to show the same effort. Plus, he was ruder to students, especially regarding the final exam date.
After reading past reviews vs. actually starting class, it's obvious Prof Broccio really listened to student feedback & made changes. If something isn't fair and you are respectful, he hears you out. If you are struggling, he will even schedule 1on1 appts outside of office hours. Overall very kind, passionate, & gives off plenty of dad joke vibes.
I really enjoyed him as a professor. He was funny and made class enjoyable, and also explained things in a way that I could understand and remember
A nice guy but incredibly disorganized. He used a flipped classroom format so lectures were mostly just going over things you already watched in videos at home. He was 10 minutes late to the final exam and responded poorly to students complaining about him to the department. Definitely take someone else for Physics 1 if you have a better option.
Im passing with a good grade, but im not sure I learned any physics. He provides a lot of opportunities for points, which is helpful. He is also disorganized and runs a flipped classroom, so if those don't work for you, beware. Overall, exams were reasonable and not intentionally tricky. Ok prof
Phenomenal professor. Super funny and makes class a lot of fun. Physics is hard but he makes it a lot easier. lectures were kind of disorganized and some questions presented were "crazy", but it did help on exams. His recitations were better run after the midterm OMETs, so he deeply cares about feedback, an implements it. Overall GREAT professor!
Broccio teaches with a flipped lecture, and the organization of the class is not great. The prelecture videos are well made but often leave things out or don't go into enough depth, making homeworks and exams very challenging because you wont see many similar examples. If you aren't very good at physics, Broccio is a poor decision.
The single worst professor I've ever had does very little to teach the material and offers very little help to students. Outside of class he seems fine but as for teaching physics avoid at all costs!
Fine lectures, but awful as a professor when it comes to organization. Exams had at least 2 questions where the correct answers were not listed as options and he had to edit the scores. 50% of recitation quizzes had an insufficient amount of information and he would have to add stuff on the board. Took months to grade anything. Avoid if you can.
His lectures are all over the place. You could skip every class and know the same amount of info from the textbook. Recitation quizzes are styled to receive at least 5/10 points. Homework is almost always extended. He takes about a month to give back exam scores but is very lenient with grading. Nice guy but would avoid taking his class again.
Dr. Broccio is a great guy and really cares about his students. He's very forgiving in grading & likes participation. For me, however, I'm not good at following along with his lectures. If you are like me and require clear equations and instructions, this may not be the professor for you. He is great at teaching, but its easy to get lost.
He's really funny, and I believe that he does actually care. However, his lectures are very confusing, very poor, and very disorganized. As a person, I could spend all day with him. However, his class has no subsidence. His lectures go on tangents ON RANDOM things. And they make no sense, genuinely. I leave more confused, and learn nothing.
He is a really sweet and funny guy, and you can tell he cares. He is just disorganized and hard to follow. I probably would not take his class again, but he is a good man
The lectures can be a bit disorganized and hard to keep up with but as long as you go to office hours and tutoring you should be fine, give out plenty of material to practice. Listens to student input and uses it towards the class.
For physics two he sent an announcement that stated: Exam #3 topics will be Magnetic field (Module 6), Electromagnetic induction (Module 7) and electromagnetic analogies (qualitative concepts only)... YET EXAM #3 WAS ALL QUANTITATIVE QUESTIONS WITH MATH!!! He is HORRIBLE!!! He tries to trick us and CANNOT TEACH. Please take another professor.
We were told by Dr. Broccio that, "by Monday April 24th 3:00pm, I will have all your subtotals (midterms, recitations, homework, minilectures) ready to be displayed in the gradebook" It is 7:10 pm on the 25th and it has not been done! Dr. Broccio does not put ANY of your correct grades into the gradebook until 20 hours before the final! Worst prof!
He does not curve at all, which sounds like it sucks but I did about average on the exams and could pass the class without even taking the final exam. He is disorganized and going to lectures is not needed. I cannot forget to mention about how he did not print enough exams for one of our tests so 8 kids in the class were unable to take the test.
Professor Broccio is a good guy but not a great teacher. His class is flipped so you watch online lecture videos which is not my favorite because it made in person lectures seem very unnecessary. He was late to almost every exam including the final and there were always multiple errors on the exam that he would have to correct mid-exam.
Super nice guy but extremely disorganized and poor lecturer. Flipped classroom meant lectures delivered via online videos but then wasted class time, making going to class seem pointless. Biggest issue were his exams- he either didn't have enough printed, graded them incorrectly and needed them back, or they had so many errors he'd fix mid-test.
He's very knowledgeable and nice, but tended to become more disorganized and quick throughout the semester. His exams are fair, although difficult. He allows equation sheets for exams. He can be a bit of tough on grading problems, but gives credit often for completion on exams and tests. He is willing to answer questions and clear things up.
Dr. B is super funny and a nice guy but the structure of the class is awful (watch videos at home and do problems in class). If you are good at teaching yourself the material then you will be fine, but if not I wouldn't recommend it. However, only 50% of your grade is composed of exams (the rest is hw, quizzes, and watching the pre-class lectures).
I had broccio for physics 1 and 2 and over the course of the year his teaching declined to wear he would only seemed to make up questions off the top of his head. Many mistakes on exams even not printing enough but not accommodating at all for students with emergencies. Funny enough person but horrible professor worst experience at pitt
Professor Broccio is a great guy and is very accommodating. His lectures are funny and he cares about his students. The course is very well organized and is straightforward. The issue is his organization on test days. He was late to almost every test and there were mistakes on every single one. The final had 5 mistakes that wasted a lot of time.
Although there were many typos, and problems with exam questions - he cares, and is accommodating if you talk to him. I would not take this class with him again, mainly because it led to a semester long of agony with grades, but in the end, it all worked out. If he got more organized, and proof read/made his exams earlier, I would take him again.
Dr. Broccio was really good about actually going step-by-step through problems and it helped my grade a lot by going to every class, however you would not be able to make it through the class on lectures alone. His exam questions were often more challenging than in-class examples, however he cushions the grade with homework and other grades.
At first I didn't like him but it later showed her cared. If you put in the work, an A is not that hard to receive. Mine was a summer class so it was a lot quicker but he is a decent professor. Not the most helpful in office hours or even lecture sometimes but mini lectures and actually doing the achieve helps a lot.
only good think about him is the way he weighs assignments. Outside of that he needs to stop teaching. He gives "example problems" that are no where near the difficulty of what he expects during quizzes or exams. The TA is even confused by him and often cannot answer questions due to vague instructions by Broccio. AVOID!
He's friendly and funny, and that's it. He does not give enough resources nor practice problems to prepare for the exam and does not grade quizzes in a timely manner, resulting in bad preparation for the exam, bc of not knowing how much you understand the material. The practice set that he gives you for practice, does not show work or anything.
Does not give you enough feedback, does not grade on time, there are quizzes every week in recitation but never grades them nor gives you feedback. He gives blank ones to prepare for the exam but does not give you answers or work, so you never know if you are doing the right thing or not.
There were times in Dr. B's lectures where I was just confused. They're mandatory but not much is gleaned from them, as the problems covered during lecture time are much more difficult than what's found on the exams. But there are video lectures and Achieve homeworks that if completed, you can learn a lot from. And exams are graded generously too!
Nice guy with a good sense of humor. Knowledgeable, but his lectures are disorganized and confusing. Not the best teacher to be honest. That being said I really don't think its very difficult to do well in this class if you do the work. His tests are pretty easy. Take notes on minilecutures, understand the equations, go to lecture, do the achieves.
I have not gone to lecture since before the first exam except to take the exams and I am doing fine. The class itself is pretty easy to do well in as long as you go to recitation and know formulas. Exams are also only 55% of the grade, so that's super nice. Broccio is super nice and accessible too if needed.
Exams are much easier than in-class problems. No need to go to lectures, doing hw and watching pre-class lectures is enough to get an A easily. 3 exams get to drop lowest. Preclass lectures worth 12%, Achieve 18%, Recitation quizzes 15% (drop 2), midterms 30% (drop 1), final 25%. TA goes over a similar quiz problem right before recitation quizzes.
I loved Broccio! His exams were fair, and he very clearly cares about his students. He's funny and tries to crack some smiles in an otherwise damp and unforgiving class. Would reccomend!
tests are super easy. gives a good amount of homework. TAs are great. his lectures are crazy disorganized and i learned more by skipping and studying myself than going and trying to understand his crazy diagrams. beware of the final tho
Even if youre not the best test taker your grade will be reflected by more than just assessments which helped me out a lot. He's a fun guy but an okay lecturer. TAs helped me more than him. His lectures were so confusing and his posted notes were not helpful at all. I did learn a lot though but probably no thanks to him.
Lectures won't help at all so you end up teaching yourself. Only 50% of grade is determined by exams and you get to drop a midterm. Doing the homework ends up teaching you material, and those questions are wayyyy easier than exams. Ends up being a pretty easy A but just get ready to teach yourself. Also--go to recitation and do decent on quizzes.
This class had me fighting for my life. I love Broccio as a person, he's very kind and more than willing to help, but dear god he was not meant to be a lecturer. The exams aren't the hardest, but there's quite a few conceptual questions that might tank your grade. If you use the textbook + practice on your own, it is possible to do well though
Very mid for physics. He made the material less complicated for exams, but he is not great at teaching. You will feel lost if you rely solely on his lectures. Use YouTube, the textbook, hw, and other resources to learn the material and you will likely be fine.
Dr. B is a very nice and kind person, but he doesn't teach very well. His exams are easy, but you have to figure out the concepts yourself cuz he doesn't explain them very well.
I hate to say this because Dr. Broccio is such a nice guy but his class was absolute hell. Useless lectures, terrible at explaining concepts, and unreasonably difficult recitation quizzes. This class hurt my GPA and sanity. Gen Chem 2 with Pete bell is better than this class if that tells you anything. Even better, no curve! AVOID!!
Broccio was not bad for physics 1, but in-person lectures are almost entirely useless. He drops one exam so I stopped going to class after the 2nd one. Easy exams, lots of homework, and the only helpful way to learn is through the minilectures and paying close attention to those. Recitation attendance and quizzes are mandatory.
Dr. B is just not a good teacher even though he's a really nice guy. However, his exams (minus the final) are reasonable, you drop one midterm, and there's also homework and recitation quizzes to buffer your grade. Pre-lecture videos are due every week too (flipped class). He is very disorganized and lectures are confusing bc he goes on tangents.
AVOID FOR PHYSICS 2! He may be good for phys 1 but he is a nightmare for phys 2. Lectures are disorganized and confusing (I learned more by not going). Midterm exams are not that bad but the final is brutal. he is not good at explaining concepts and his mini lectures don't really teach anything. If you have him for recitation too, good luck
The class was pretty easy up until the final (I had an A on the midterms and did well on weekly quizzes). However, the final was pretty difficult and I didn't do the best. His cutoff for an A- was a 89, but said if you were within .25, he would round up. I had a 88.74 average, .26 away from an 89. He did not round up my grade. Take that as you will
He's funny but lectures are all over the place and not useful since it's flipped. I thought I was going to end with an A- bc I averaged a B+ on exams but bombed the final. Idk if that was because it was really hard or if I was too focused on other finals but very disappointing. HW is not super relevant but can boost grade if u use online resources.
One of the easier STEM classes I've taken. Required homework and pre-class minilectures, but graded for completion. Doesn't really teach but fun to see him play instruments or do silly little demonstrations in class. Offers practice questions before exams, but doesn't show the work required to get the answer.
Funny and caring but lectures weren't too helpful. His homework and recitation quizzes are much harder than exams, which were usually the easiest examples of each concept. Watch minilectures and WATCH YOUTUBE VIDEOS!!! The Organic Chemistry Tutor on YT was the reason I understood everything. Grade gets padded from HW + watching minilectures.
3 exams (1 drop), final, minilectures and hw. I found his lectures unnecessarily complicated and confusing. A simple concept turned into a half hour spiel with random notations and whatnot. I liked that the hw and ML's were worth a lot of our grade, but he was kind of a headache to decipher. He made mistakes on exams often. Get ready to self study.
His lectures are very convoluted and confusing and usually do not reflect what appears on exams and quizzes. Exams are manageable with preparation from other sources and homework. He's not very good at answering questions so you'll be mostly on your own in the class. Not the most ideal but the physics department doesn't have many options.
Broccio is one of the worst professors I've had. His lectures were completely unhelpful, I felt more confused after them. He is unprofessional and unorganized. The course isn't that bad if you watch youtube videos on the material. Exams are fair enough, but he throws in trick questions with unnecessary data to throw you off.
Super disorganized, takes weeks to respond to emails and is super unclear. The flipped classroom format is useless, he only does 1-2 problems in class so you are on your own to figure out the homework. He is nice but doesnt help you at all. I had a medical issue and his disorganization screwed me over repeatedly. I would NEVER take him again.
I don't love his teaching style (teaches in flipped classroom format). His lecture's don't really make sense and makes the material more confusing. Exams are fairly straight forward, but doesn't allow room for error. (2 open ended 8 multiple choice). He often has to push material back due to not teaching at a fast enough pace which screws you over.
Dr. Broccio is a great person, funny guy. But he's a terrible professor when it comes to organizing the material for the course. The lectures are confusing as well as the posted material, hard to understand because is all over the place. I enjoyed his personality and passion for physics but he's an awful educator when it comes to teaching students.
He utilized flipped classroom and the vids he posts are super helpful if you are into self teaching. Lecture is almost always pointless because he just does practice problems based on the flipped classroom vids. Tests were not too bad but the final was mostly conceptual stuff.
The class is "flipped," he gives what are called mini lectures which introduce the topic and then goes on to talk about it in class. Some things in class are important but not all, and the exams are straight forward as long as the big concepts are understood. I recommend this class if your more of a self studier.
Fall 2022 & Spring 2023: I liked having him for Physics 1 & 2, the format of grading was weekly quizzes that were great practice for the 2 exams & final, & weekly HW was helpful for getting basic content (NOT meant to prepare for exams). Lecture content was also basic & not enough to prepare for exams. His fun personality made class more enjoyable!
Broccio is a funny guy, but lectures were so useless and all over the place that I stopped going about 5 weeks into the semester. The homework and recitation grades help balance out your exam grades if you struggle with test taking. Not a hard class if you are good at teaching yourself, but it could've been a lot easier with a better professor imo
Only reason I'm not giving him a 1 is because he is funny in lecture, other than that he is awful. The way he taught this class was just terrible. Lectures were all over the place and impossible to follow along with, notes were so disorganized, and exams had multiple mistakes in them. Only take him if you already know physics.
not the worst physics professor. the class has a flipped lecture model, so the video lectures are more useful than the in-person ones.
He didnt teach much in class, had pre lecs which explained imp things. There is a weekly hw which is annoying but helpful. His tests were somewhat difficult, but if you put in the work it should be ok.TAs were super helpful and the only reason why i understood lecs.I would recommend taking if youre somewhat good at physics or if you can put in work
obviously if i could go back I would choose the grad TA whose final was online. but I dont mess around when it says TBA. anyway, broccio is a GOOD choice for physics 1. all the people getting on here saying hes not, probably studied 1-3 days in advance. if you rewatch ML, watch youtube vids and READ THE TEXTBOOK, you will understand the information
i studied a week in advance at most and did really well on the exams. there is a practice set w answer key and solutions provided. it is not hard to do well in this class. the partial credit on the exams is so so nice too and a 90.75+ was an A. he is also available to help and super friendly. great guy. tip: do good on 1st 2 exams, theyre ez
I read his bad reviews before taking the class. I thought "he can't be THAT bad". He is that bad. If you already have a physics background, you'll be okay, but if you're like me and are taking it for the first time... just do yourself a favor and take with someone else.
I don't even know how I got a B. Tests were nothing like what was taught. He's funny but I was always confused. He used flipped classroom, where we watched the lectures at home. I didn't learn a single thing. He also lost my fial exam :( If you know physics you'll probably be ok. Good luck.
Broccio is the most incompetent, absolute worst choice for physics. I saw the bad reviews and thought it would be fine. Don't be like me. It's so easy to just take a different prof, save yourself the agony. Ineffective and confusing teaching, many mistakes on exams, impossible to please, and very rude and forgetful honestly worst prof i've ever had
Flipped classroom with quick video lectures. Found it hard to relate in-class lectures to the videos. However, do the exam study guide practice problems, homework, and go to recitation and it helps clarify. I studied no more than a week in advance for exams and did well. Knowing how to apply the formulas is key. Nice and funny prof
Physics is evidently a difficult course, but I felt that Dr. B did a good job of making it understandable. I was nervous to take him considering some of the negative reviews but he really isn't a bad professor at all. He's a very nice and funny professor who wants his students to succeed. You just need to put in the work to do well in his class
he is not that bad omg please chill, he is a decent professor. he cares about students and tries to work with them one-on-one if needed. the bad reviews are very exaggerated.
Granted this was a summer class with no final, but I'd recommend Broccio to anyone. Tests were extremely manageable; almost half of your final grade is pre-lectures, homework, etc., which is practically a guaranteed 100. Flipped classroom style isn't ideal but he makes up for it with his jokes/funny demonstrations during class.
His flipped classroom style isn't good and lectures are messy. I went to him this semester to discuss this, but he told me that it was a "student issue". I had been watching his videos, doing the homework/practice problems yet he blamed me for being confused during class. If I had the option I would take the class with a different professor.
I thought he was cool until he sent out an email to the entire class ranting about a bad rate my professor review. weird move, great way to make yourself look insecure and petty
Took this class over the summer and had 2 emergencies show up where i had to miss quizzes but he was SUPER flexible in adjusting around fast schedule. Majority of people complaining received above a B, so even despite their complaints, the professor must've done something right for these people to pass. I highly recommend him.
Dr. B is a better professor than most people are saying on here. He's a caring and funny guy that wants you to enjoy physics as much as he does. Physics is the science I struggle the most with and despite that I still finished strong. Do as many practice questions as possible and his practice sets. MC on exams expect you to know concepts too.
Broccio's class can be challenging, but with the right approach it's manageable. The flipped classroom format takes some getting used to, but he makes up for it with his humor. Utilize the practice problems, recitations, and unstuckstudy AI to ace this course.
DO NOT TAKE. I'm only a few weeks in and all I've been doing is reading the textbook. He never teaches he just does things and expects you to get it. I've never taken physics before so I knew I would have to work hard but not like this. His humor in class isn't enough to make it worth it imo. save urself
I never use rate my professor because I usually find it nor accurate and people just complaining they got bad grades, but Broccia was BAD he was extremely rude over email, not helpful in answering questions, and made you feel dumb without explaining..his grading and class material is extremely disorganized, he does not help in time of need
If I could give a 4.5 out of 5 I would, because he was a little disorganized. However, Dr. Broccio gets so much more hate than he deserves. He is funny, engaging, and very clearly cares about the material and loves his job. I think he gets a lot of hate because physics is just hard in general, but if you study, you'll be fine.
I switched into his class and it was a good decision. It's a reverse lecture style, but the prelectures don't take as long as other courses I've taken. Exams are very hard, but with homework making up a decent percentage of your grade, and the amount of drops, it is not as bad as it seems.
The first two exams and final are easy if you study a ton. The third exam is impossible, but one exam is dropped. Fluff grades come from hw, recitations, and mini-lectures. Lectures won't help you. Go to recitation TA office hours if you need help. You can do well in his class if you put the work in- he is extremely caring and tries his best.
So much homework and generously graded weekly quizzes to cushion your grade from the tests that are also not very difficult. Attendance is not required and I honestly don't suggest it because he has a flipped class structure and records minilectures that are honestly much better than his in-person problem-solving ones.
Stopped going to lecture and I did better in the course. Flipped classroom so i "learned" through the videos, but read the textbook!! Rec quizzes and HW helped grades. Avoid if you can though, but he isn't impossible. Isn't really good at teaching and really unorganized(his jokes don't make up for it), but put in the work and you'll be ok.
Weekly quizzes in recitation, four exams, final required. You can drop one exam. The Achieve homework are easy points. The professor was somewhat disorganized, he made up problems on the spot in lectures which made it hard to follow. Lots of people would not show up to class. He was funny sometimes. Sometimes rude.
He is funny, but a terrible lecturer. He will only do 1-2 ex. per class and just ask "is this possible" instead of showing how to actually solve the problems. His exams are very difficult; the open-ended has opportunities for credit but the mc are 5 pts each (only 8-10). You get a textbook, and use it because lectures won't help.
TAs were super helpful for this class. Lectures were difficult for me to follow at first, but I got used to it and started understanding it as time went on. Devote a good amount of time outside of class to study and conceptualize the material. The final was hardest other than that the exams are fair and easier than what's taught in class.
After having to retake physics 1 (had salman before, tragic) broccio is a dream. So kind and willing to help you if you're stuck. Mini Lectures are very helpful and I like his in person lectures (I go for entertainment). Exams are not bad at all, very straightforward and not deceptive in any way. Would defend him until my last breath.
Broccio is amazing. I was so scared going into physics, but his lectures are entertaining and interesting and he does a great job involving the class. Physics is hard, no matter who you take it with, but he is very manageable. Exams are fair, lots of opportunity for easy points (videos, hw, and quizzes). Take him if you can!! Also an amazing guy!
Dr Broccio uses a flipped classroom, so you watch videos before each lecture and don't really need to go to class. the course is graded from these lecture videos, recitation worksheets (easy, 3 dropped), online homework, 3 exams, and 1 final. All exams are 2 open ended questions and some multiple choice. As long as you study you will do fine.
Lectures are videos that you watch before class. So if you miss a module, you're behind. Then in class, Dr. B spends 50 minutes doing one or two problems in an excruciatingly complex way, problems more complicated than you will ever see on an exam/homework. You will leave lecture more confused than when you got there.
Really nice guy who obviously cares about his job and physics, but very bad teacher. I essentially had to teach myself physics which kind of ruined my semester. His questions are worded in a very confusing way, his examples are so complicated and "real-world based" in a way that makes them incredibly confusing, and he does not explain things.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. I normally take this ratings with a grain of salt, but seriously listen to this one. He will expect you to know information you won't and he will not give you have of the information you need. He's a nice guy but he is impossible to have as a teacher. I literally taught myself physics. Seriously save yourself the pain.
Flipped lecture style is not something I am a big fan of. Lectures seemed pointless and I ended up having to teach myself a lot of the material. Graded on exams, homework, videos, and recitation quizzes which were pretty simple. Not the worst but not my favorite.
He's an amazing professor and you can tell he really cares about his students. After retaking Physics 1 (first time in his class), I can definitely say he's the best physics professor at Pitt. Super accessible outside of class, his exams aren't too bad if you study, and he's got a great sense of humor. Take him if you can!
not gonna lie i've always sucked at physics like i'm no stem genius trust me but taking broccio was the best decision ever. i hate to admit it but if you're failing his class it's cuz you didn't try, he gives you literally everything you need to pass like those minilectures are gold people just don't wanna put in the work.
physics is hard, thats not the profs fault. i like the flipped classroom bc i hate going to lecture and i didnt go to a single lecture and i did fine! tests are super reasonable in my opinion. hes a good guy, he seems super kind and chill
Physics is hard but Broccio wasn't too bad of a prof. Hw, recitation, and pre lec videos all counted towards your grade so if you fail that's on you tbh. Exams are hard but he gives lots of partial credit. Do the practice sets before exams and you should be fine. Dislike flipped classroom but it was fine. Not as bad as people think imo.
Did not show the grades on canvas the whole year so I was unable to check the grade at the end which ended up being very inconvenient.
Dr. B is the goat! I think people hate on him a lot because physics is hard, but it is hard no matter who teaches it. He clearly cares so much about his students, and if you come to him with a reasonable problem, he will hear you out. I also don't think I've had a funnier professor, which helps a lot when the material sometimes isn't interesting.
Went to 1 lecture the whole sem, physics 2 is a hard subject sure, but a lot of times he made concepts even more difficult. Take time and watch prelectures(prelec, hw, rec quizzes all help ur grade) and do as many practice problems as you can and ask ur TA for help. I did bad on the 3 exams but did really well on the final(he used some midterm qs)
Just skip lecture. The problems he does in lecture are way harder than the exam questions so there's no point it will just confuse you. Lets you use a notecard for formulas on exams so all I did was write the formulas for each unit and my exam scores were 98, 88, 101 (lowest score dropped), and a 79 on the final. Finished with a 94% in the class.
Dr B gives lots of materials to learn outside of class. He sometimes goes too fast in class, but he's available for questions after class. You'll need to work hard.
my weakest subject (i was terrified.) but got A haters didn't use his resources properly 50% your efforts-rec, hw, prelec stopped attending lec cuz lazy (but helpful bc harder than exam & nails conceptual down), but he posts after exam easy 100 if u use+understand ALL resources-conceptual(TEXTBOOK)+math. SO funny, sweet, patient, responds fast
His final was 75% questions from exams 1-3. Like the exact same numbers.
3 Exams are easy, but his lectures are extremely boring and usually include tons of useless calculations instead of real physics knowledge
a very bad professor
You basically have to teach yourself physics but i would say he is the lesser of the evil for the physics department. exams are 2 open ended and like 10 mc
i could not imagine taking physics with anyone else. a little disorganized, sure, but he always finds ways to compensate for his mistakes and everyone giving bad ratings on here knows that he is the kindest professor you will encounter at pitt. His mini lectures are more helpful than the actual lecture but the lectures are fun asf.
He is very disorganized & exam environments are awful (he forgets to put necessary numbers in the problems so they're unsolvable & says "pick the closest answer" for multiple choice but none of the answers are anywhere close)
Broccio is so funny and while I find physics is not really my favorite thing, I still felt engaged in lectures. He is very caring and wants everyone to do well. Tests can be a bit frustrating since they are pretty short, but I would recommend making sure you do practice problems, and watching the mini lectures.
Dr. Broccio is a sweet and funny guy, and generally a fair grader. However, his lectures are dry and he goes on lots of tangents, so the class is perpetually behind. Additionally, he messed up one exam so badly he had to eliminate half of the questions for the entire class. Exams also won't be graded until 3-4 weeks after they are taken.
Our grade was made up of three exams (one drop), a cumulative final, weekly homework, weekly pre-class video lectures, and recitation quizzes. The exams and final were 56% of the grade, and it was definitely nice to get a boost from the homework. Broccio was a confusing lecturer; I'd say attending lecture was not helpful. It also wasn't mandatory.
Bro this man actually teaches negative material. Can't tell you one thing I've learned even though I've done well in the class. I attend all of his classes and thoroughly watch the pre-lecture which is probably attributed to my success, because giving him credit would not be truthful at all. His classes are him just disorganized rambling.
He is an amazing professor for physics 1&2! I took both of the classes with him, and he is one of my favorite professors at Pitt. He is always willing to help students, caring for the students, and generous in terms of grading. For the exams, they are totally fair if you study the recitation and in-class problems. I would definitely recommend him.
Dr. Broccio was bad. Like seriously. I'm an avid lecture attender, but this class was unbearable. I learned more from the student tutors at the Study Lab and from watching the organic chemistry tutor on youtube than anything in lecture. This class was insanely boring and miserable. Luckily, the exams werent too hard.
Matteo Broccio is a pretty nice and funny guy outside the classroom, but I would not recommend taking his class. He does a flipped classroom model meaning he assigns about 20-30 minute lectures due before class and then only does practice problems in class. He also is very disorganized. Out of the 3 tests we have had, he lost 2 of my exams.
Don't get me wrong... Dr. B is a very nice person and cares about his students. However, he was very disorganized with following the syllabus and making extremely BAD errors on his exams. Although he did give us extra points for it, I think there is definitely a better professor. His course work was very easy and straightforward.
Broccio is a great prof who gives the resources you need to succeed. He's easy to reach and accommodating to individual needs, which is impressive given how many hundreds of students he has. The work you put in will be the grade you receive. I did B work and got a B bc I'm kinda lazy. No clue why people rate him poorly, he's funny in lecture too.
The point of lectures is to do practice problems, but Dr. B tangents often and is hard to follow as he solves them. The good thing is 44% of your grade comes from homework and recitations which are easy 100s, provided you put in normal amounts of effort. Pretty bad lecturer, but funny and provides many materials and demonstrations. Would take again
Broccio is the man. I am confident in my physics knowledge after his class. His mini lectures were thorough, his grading scale is great, and his demos and lectures are hilarious. If you think of the stereotypical goofy, caring physics professors from the movies, Broccio is him. Told me that he was proud of me and how I could always reach out to him
just do yourself a favor and dont take him he just yaps about nonsense stuff and whats on the exam is never reflective of what he teaches or your practice at all
His exams are extremely easy. You don't need to go to class at all, what you need to do is to write every important formula on your cheat sheet.
20% final, 36% three midterms one drop, I never have taken a physics and did fine but hated the class honestly bc the lectures were so disorganized and never taught me anything. Just watch mini lectures and teach yourself. Tests are fair enough with an open ended and then 10-12 mcq's . We got a lot of extra credit added to them too but randomly
I felt like his 3 exams were somewhat fair and his grade weights are pretty generous (only 56% of your grade is exams including the final). However, the version of the final I had was absolutely brutal/unfair. I wouldn't say this is an easy class and requires work if you're not innately good at math/physics. Spent 4-10 hours each week on it.
Funny guy who makes class interesting. Exams are fair and the class is not too difficult if you put the work in. Pretty understanding too if you need to reschedule something
Physics 2 is objectively harder than physics 1. Over half your grade is hw, recitation, pre lec videos, etc... Tests are fair but difficult. Lectures are hard to follow but he posts completed notes. Drops lowest test so you have some wiggle room. I'm not a math/physics person and I did well, take him, you could do worse.
He is a very nice professor and wants his students to succeed. He is very accessible and wants to help. His grading policies are clear, but at times his lectures can get confusing. As long as you can complete homeworks and recitation quizzes/practice you will be fine! Physics is hard regardless of the professor.
Super funny but highly disorganized. I got a 37/60 on an mcq which I found out last minute was a 59/60 and that saved my grade. Accessible and extremely sweet. Key is to ALWAYS pick up physical exam copies and verify your grade. practice hw questions, class lecture questions, and practice sets. Exams have lots of mcq but if you study, it's doable.
Broccio's exams are pretty easy and fair. Coming from someone who didn't even learn physics in high school, watching the mini-lectures and doing all of the posted lecture notes really helped. He is very nice and is always willing to give extra credit, but his lectures are very dry, and he is very disorganized (messed up our first exam).
He's a bit disorganized. His lectures are funny but not very helpful. How he explained problems in lecture and how my TA explained others in recitation just made me more confused. The mini lectures and HW are good so stick to those and your own practice and you'll be okay. Exams were fair and grading system gives a lot of room for missed points.
He is a funny and genuinely nice professor. Only thing is that I had a hard time following lectures. Exams are very fair if you study the pre-lecture and lecture material. I had a solid physics background, but I don't think his class is all that difficult if you put the work in. Take him!
I never went to class but I watched the mini lectures and did the homework before exams, which worked out well for me. In fact, going to lecture is such a waste of time because he does random problems (and messes up many times while solving them). Funny dude though, and I'm glad those mini lectures were there to concisely sum up the content.
The homework is hard and takes forever, and the exams are like the homework.
